Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer Podcast, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: You know, there's something quite magical about a book.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Of course, you already know that since you're a writer.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: You're already committed to the art and the craft of writing books.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: But it's really interesting that so many writers don't make a lot of time to read.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: We love books and we're committed to creating them, but sometimes we struggle with fitting reading into our schedules.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Reading is a critical part of the creative process.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Of course, we need to have other inputs as well, such as listening to great talks, watching videos and movies, seeing plays, and other ways to experience great art.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: But above all, we must read.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: So here's a very simple method for reading more.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Take a book everywhere you go.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Now the truth is that if you have a smartphone in the Kindle app, you're already taking books with you on your phone.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: But let's assume that you prefer reading print books, as most writers do and as I do personally.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Now it might seem strange to carry a book with you everywhere, but it really does work.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Think of all those little spare moments you have throughout the day.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: 10 minutes here while you're waiting to pick up your kid from school, 15 minutes there while you're waiting to get your license renewed at the DMV, five minutes here when you're waiting for your husband or wife in the store, or 20 minutes there before your next Zoom call.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Mark Twain famously said, a person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: So you don't necessarily need to block off huge chunks of time during the day in order to read.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: There's plenty of little moments here and there that can add up to 30 or even 60 minutes a day when you expand your mind and fill your creative well with the amazing power of reading.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
