- 0:00Aloha. Friday morning in Hawaiʻi. Strong trade winds are moving in and staying through the weekend — Mele here with what's happening today.
- 1:46Expect breezy conditions across all the islands through at least Monday. Windward slopes and mountains will see showers mostly overnight and early morning, but daytime leeward coasts should stay mostly dry. Nothing extreme — just typical June weather. If you're heading to the beach, morning is your best window on the leeward side before any afternoon wind kicks up.
- 2:05On the water: Oʻahu's south shore is running 4.9 feet and the north shore is 5.4 feet — both moderate, so watch for shore break and rip currents. Kāʻanapali on Maui is smaller at 3.5 feet, comfortable for swimmers. The Big Island's Hapuna is nearly glassy at 1.7 feet. But Kauaʻi's Hanalei is running 6.7 feet with powerful shore break — that's an experienced-only break this morning.
- 2:24At Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, the Kīpukapuaulu Trail is temporarily closed due to hazardous trees, and the Lava Tube Bridge is under replacement. There's an active eruption alert for Kīlauea and a caution about volcanic dust in the air — protect yourself if you're heading up there. Everything else across the parks is operating normally.
- 2:41If you're traveling with kids this trip, our new piece on visiting Hawaiʻi with a baby or toddler walks through what actually changes — flights, car seats, which beaches work best, and what activities to skip. It's an honest read on the logistics, not marketing copy. You'll find the full guide on the site.
