- 1:17SPEAKER_01: I snelling.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: This is what this is what the streets is saying.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: So you let me know.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Are we spot on or you know, do we need to edit this?
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: It says today on story scaling, we are sitting down with a true powerhouse, Calvin Hot Sauce Henderson, is a professional, super middleweight boxer, but his impact goes way beyond the canvas.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: In a sport that is often dominated by ego, hype, trash talk, Calvin has built a rock solid reputation.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Period.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: He is known across the board as a man of deep character, relentless work ethic, and genuine humility.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: While he's a proud Northwest Arkansas native by way of Fort Worth, Texas, and a University of Arkansas graduate, his mindset is what sets him apart globally.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: He actually holds a degree in music education, proving that he has always understood the power of rhythm, discipline, and mastering of craft, whether that's behind a drum kit or under the bright lights of a national broadcast.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: But today we are just talking about his highlight reel.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: We're getting into the hard truths of the fight game.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Boxing is one of the most unforgiving businesses on earth.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: It requires a level of mental fortitude, isolation, and physical sacrifice that most people cannot even fathom.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Calvin is here to talk about the reality of the grind, how he protects his peace and his family amidst the chaos of professional sports and what it truly takes to get hit, reset, and keep moving forward.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Ladies and gentlemen, Calvin Hot Soss Anderson.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Golly, man.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: I feel like it's an applaud of that job.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: That's good, bro.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: That's you.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: That's good, man.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: That's you.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: I'm messing with you, man.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: I'm messing with you.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: That's good though, man.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: The only thing that's a big part of my life that's like that ain't introduced or include is my wife, Delia Innocence, and my five kids, man.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: They are still a huge, huge part and a part of success of Team Souls.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: Man, it wouldn't be no I saw innocent without all that, man.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: So that's the only thing to miss.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Other than that, man, shout out to the family.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: You know, shout out to the family.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Man, when when you hear this bio, and I I love to give people their flowers, and that could have gone on, bro.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Like I, you know, I had to trim it up, but it could have gone on and on.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Like, what sticks out to you the most when you hear some of these things that, you know, are how people see you and the work that you've done and put in.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: What's crazy about any kind of like profession, right?
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Like your dream.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Let's say you're following your dream.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: The outside everybody else always sees the TV fights.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: They see you on TV fighting, they see you fighting for the world title, fighting on Showtime, whatever.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: They don't see the start, the beginning.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: That's the part that people don't record.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: People don't record the you and your mama's garage in the mattress for a heavy bag.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: That's the part nobody gets to see.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: So too many times people get caught up with the accolades.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: But really, for me, the cool part is the journey, bro.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: So I tell kids all the time, for the young kids, they so quick trying to get to the end of the other ride.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Bruh, take the seatboard off, enjoy the enjoy the journey, you know what I mean?
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Because that's the part that you build memories, that's the part that you build the laughter, you build the stuff that you can recall whenever your career starts in.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: And then that's the part that I think a lot of people, they fast forward is just the journey about it.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, man.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: So when you read all that stuff off, what kind of my forefront and came to my mind was just all the sacrifice.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: We talked about that, the sacrifice, then it's just all the moments that got me to those moments.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Bro, you have a very unique perspective.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: First of all, I got a cousin that's a boxer.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: To be a boxer, you got to be a different person.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I want to be very clear about that.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Like, you have to be a very different type of person to be able to put your body through some of that stuff, put your mind through some of that stuff.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Not quit after your first fight.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Man, what?
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So, like, so I I want you to kind of walk me through how did you find this path?
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Like, get take us back as far as you want to go.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Like, man, how did you how did you find boxing?
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: How did boxing fire you?
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: So I'll be that time, man.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: This is your show now.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: Take us, take us on the journey.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: So, if I'm being honest, man, I when I was younger, I always had a knack for like wanting to do contact sports, you know what I mean?
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: And especially martial arts.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: But uh, my parents would never put me in because I had a bunch of brothers and stuff.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: We all grew up around the same age.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: They was nervous about us fighting each other.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: If we did karate or martial arts and stuff.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: And so it wasn't until I stopped playing football.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: I was already in high school already.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: And I wanted to box, but I didn't know where to get started at.
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: I was on the drumline in house school.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: And there was a guy came in with drama earth, so he had a bag with boxing gloves in it.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: I go, right, bro, what's going on?
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: Where you going?
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: He said, I thought I'd leave uh drum line practice, and I'm going to the boxing gym.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: So I called instantly.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: What the gym at?
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: What do you know about how much it costs?
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: So he went to the gym, got me a flyer, brought it back, took it to my mom.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: She was like, I don't know.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: I said, whatever it is, I'll pay for it.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: I'll pay to get there.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: And so I got there, dude.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: But before let me back stuff, so before she took me, she said no, of course.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: She didn't know about the cost.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: And so I went to Walmart and found like a boxing DVD.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah, boxing DVD, right?
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: And I bought like a cheap pair of Walmart gloves, got this boxing DVD, went home, popped that John in.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: I'm studying it, man.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: I'm boring.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: The stands.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: It's a DVD, you know, you can learn what you can learn from it, but I'm thinking I'm going crazy.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: I go out to the garage, I'm hitting the old mattress in the garage.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: So my mama, she came out, I think she's doing laundry, opened the garage door, she sees me outside sweating.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: I'm hitting the hitting the uh mattress.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: She goes boy, you for real.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she said, boy, you for real.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: I said, Yes, ma'am, I'm for real.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: She said, I'm gonna take you to the gym tomorrow.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: So she took me to the gym.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Dude, when I went to the gym, man, I I know people say this all the time, but I really felt like I was at home.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Like I walked in, you can hear people jumping rope, you can hear people hitting the bags.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: I had introduced to the coach.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: He kind of took me through some drills, and the first thing the coach did, he was like, Man, you you boxed before?
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: I go, nah, man.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: He said, You got some natural talent.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: So put a pause in that.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Fast forward, I'm already boxing, I'm already competing now.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: I'm 22 years old.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: I found out that I'm adopted, right?
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: They had no idea my whole life.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: I found out I was adopted.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: At 22?
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: 22 years old.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: And when I found out I was adopted, I also found out my biological father, his brothers, which is my uncles and cousins, they was all either professional boxes or amateur boxers.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: There's no way.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: I wish I wrote a book on this, man.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: So like it just let me know that whatever God has for you, it's for you.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: My blood, literally.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: It's no to say, it ain't on me, it's in me.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: Dude, I'm telling you, dude, so like all the natural stuff that just came natural to me, it was already in my DNA already.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: I just had to walk it out.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: You know, I just had to walk it out.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: The coach said, Have you done this before?
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the first thing he said.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: When he took me through the bases in the middle, he said, Where did you box at before?
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: I said, I never boxed before.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: He said, Man, you were natural at it.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Like naturally, you know what I'm saying?
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: I cannot make this story up.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: I screwed it be like the HBO or something like them.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: No, wey, Netflix, hey, hey, Netflix.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I find I was adopted, man.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: I felt like my whole family on that side, I had no idea about they all boxed.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: But then what's crazy that the the the the family I call family, right?
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Even though I'd do it, I don't I don't really know my biological side like that beside my brother.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: Um, they didn't they didn't watch boxing like that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Maybe watch Mike Tyson fight.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: But I just had this natural inclination to be doing it, you know what I'm saying?
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: And then what's crazy is that when my dad, well, I called my dad, rest in peace, him, my mom, if when I found out and called him that I was adopted, he told my mom the story.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Way back when I asked him, can we go to boxing?
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Well, he said, when I walked to the room, he told my mom, we said, we cannot stop destiny.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: My dad, hey, they knew that's how the family they knew it already.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: They told my mom right there, he said, we can't stop destiny.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Like, that's crazy how just God works in mysterious ways, bro.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Bro, we like two minutes in.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: I'm sitting there like HD.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Like, so you said, so again, take me back, bro.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: You so when you, it's a core memory walking into that gym for the first time.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Big face.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: You said you felt at home.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Like you can remember hearing the jump rope.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: You can remember.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: I can smell it, man.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Like, even right now to the day, I can remember how it smelled when I walked down that hallway, wanted to the gym and stuff.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: That's Fort Worth Boxing Club, man, back in Fort Worth, Texas.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: And I remember just hearing just our commotion.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: You just I feel like I was at home, man.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Picked up on it.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: I saw the training.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: And back then, you 15, I'm 15, 16 years old.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: I'm still a knucker here.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: I'm sitting doing what I do, but I'm still in the gym, you know what I mean?
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: We sparring.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: Competition, my first fight I had.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: I think I was a month in training.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Had my first amateur fight, won that jump, man, and just kept going.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Didn't look bad.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Didn't look bad, man.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Give me the path from where you were at 15 to now.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Obviously, you you take it a little bit more serious.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Your mind is even starting to recognize, like, now he for real.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: And so you start sparring, and then like, what's the path at that point that you think you're gonna be a you know a champion?
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Are you like, like, give me, give me the journey from 15 euro hot sauce to you know the next few years, what what starts to happen?
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: So at that part, I started, like I said, I had a natural knack for it.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: So spawn, so I do good in sparring.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: And you knew that, like you knew early, like, oh, I'm good at it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: I knew it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I knew it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: It was crazy.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: I played sports when I did football, basketball, baseball, track dog and stuff, and I was okay at it.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: But when I had boxing jump, man, from day one, yeah.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, this is something that I'm really good at.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: A lot of people who have been doing it longer than me, they aren't good at.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Just I saw the difference already in it.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: I was sparring guys, not there for a month.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: I've been sparring guys there for eight months, nine months, yeah.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: And whooping them, man.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: I thought to the point to where the one guy asked me to spar him, he was going there for eight months.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: He asked the coach, hey, can I can I spar with Calvin?
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: He goes, dude, let him come here for a couple weeks, man.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: What you mean?
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: He said, you know what?
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: I said, yo, coach, I'm good.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: Whooped him.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: And so then, like I said, it kept going, I kept going, I kept training.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: But now I had my first fight, my grandma and shit, she saw it.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: And then this was weird about boxing.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: Especially me boxing.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: Because I was skinny, man.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: I was like 140 pounds, right?
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: People look at me to go like, man, I'm fighting, you know what I'm saying?
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: So nobody believed me.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: I would go home and tell my dad about, hey man, in the gym, I did this.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: He goes, Man, ain't no way.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: I tell my friend, man, you broke boxing.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: He was like, ain't no way, right?
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: And then my dad decided to go with me to the gym.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: He's like, you know what?
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: You talking all this stuff about how you good you're doing.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: When the next time y'all spawn, I'ma go.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: And so my dad came and spawned.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: I'm getting warm dog in the ring.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: My dad looked at me, go, oh no, you talk about it.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: You were around the whole time telling me, the coach is supposed to tell you you're good.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: You want you to keep paying money to be right.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: I said, Dad, just come.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: He saw it, you know what I mean?
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: And that first fight, when I won my first fight, and I brought that trophy on and I brought it to school on Monday.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: People like, dude, you for real?
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: The video of him, man, it was a rap thing.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: And so kept doing that.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: And then I knew this was crazy, bang, is that I got engulfed in it.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: This is something that I found my own lane with.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: None of my other friends were doing it.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: So I kind of had my own little niche.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: So I would hang up posters and pictures on the wall of different boxes I wanted to be like.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: I remember seeing them Jermaine, um, Jermaine Taylor.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: I go, man, man, I'm gonna be a trusher just like him.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: And he was on a.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Not knowing that he was from Little Rock, Arkansas.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Little Rock, Arkansas.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: I had no idea.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: I'm in Fort Worth, Texas.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: I remember the picture, it was an Everlast magazine.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: I had a picture of Jermaine Taylor when he had the word titles on it.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: I said, I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be a champion too, man.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: I just knew it.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: I didn't know how I was gonna do it, but I knew what I wanted to do.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: And I had to figure out how to do it from there.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: You got so many spots in your story where I'm like, man, this is a gym.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: We could really go down this path.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: You you talk about something that I love because I think as people, vision is hard to get sometimes.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: You don't know where you go.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: You just out here.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Like you just living your life, you just doing what you're doing.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: It's not bringing you closer to a goal because you ain't got a goal right now.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: You know, I'll never forget, bro.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: I I talked to one of my homeboys, and this is a homeboy who I didn't done shows with, done prayed for me, I didn't pray for him, and slept on his couch, he didn't probably sleep on, you know what I'm saying?
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: I said, Man, pray for me because I just want God to limit my distractions right now.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: I want to be locked in.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: He was like, Okay, for sure.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, what's your focus?
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: Like, what you focused on?
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: And I was like, uh, right now, I don't really know.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: I'm just he laughed.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Like, like what you did.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: He said, Okay, how about you find a focus, and then your focus will tell you what your distractions are.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Damn.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Because it's anything that's not that.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: That's real.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: No, I'm just like, damn, bro.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: I've been, this has been five years.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: I think about that almost every day.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: It's huge, bro.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Because it's it changed my life.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, when I but when I talk to you, you have this level of vision, whether that's the Jermaine Taylor poster on the wall, whether that's the okay, no, I gotta show them I'm serious.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Like I'm finna go get the DVD, I'm finna, I don't got a heavy bat, I'm finna hit this mattress.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: You know, so so talk to me about even this idea of vision or focus.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Like, where did that come from and and how big is that in your life now?
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: And so that's what's crazy because as I went through life and navigated through life, you meet people who are on their road trying to figure out what they want to do.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: And I've never been that person where I don't know which way I'm going.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: And so, like, even to the point to where I knew I wanted to be professional boxing, but I still had a little pit stops along the way.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: I still went to the University of Arkansas.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: There wasn't no boxing team in the University of Arkansas, there wasn't no boxing scholarship at the U of A.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: But I was still majored in music education, the U of A, still with the idea of doing boxing.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: So I had to take, I guess you could say, a little break off.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: But what I would do is I would come up here to Fairville, I would do my school thing during semester.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: So I would go home in the summers, go back to boxing again.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: And so I did that throughout the years until I found my career coach now, Kevin Lightbrand, up here in my last semester in college.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Last year, last semester, I had nothing but plans to go back to Texas and go pro in boxing.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: That was my plan.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: I made my career coach right now my last semester in college.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: How you made him?
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: It's crazy how you met him because like I said up here, there wasn't no boxing jobs up here.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: I heard about one way out there in the country somewhere.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: I could never find it.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: When you when you were in school, you mean like none.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Like it was none around here.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: None.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: I heard about a rumor about one maybe in Elkins.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: I could never find it.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Of course, I didn't have no car, didn't try the Elkins U of A.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: And so really what I would do is I would just lift ways while I'm up here, go to school, party, do whatever, and go back in the summers and train.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: But so my last, actually, my junior year, I decided to do the Texas Golden Gloves, the Four Word Golden Gloves.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: I said, man, I'm gonna do it, man.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: But the Four Word Golden Gloves is always during the school semester.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: So I trained myself for that fight.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: Up here, in Arkansas.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: I went and bought my own membership at a gym called World's Gym.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: They don't have an up here no more.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: They had bags there.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: So I paid about one month membership there.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: Woke up myself, ate right, trained myself, did my running, did everything I need to do myself, took a whole week off of classes.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Now when I do that in college, you don't get to just say, I'm gonna be back next week.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: Nah, you don't.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: You still got tests.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: You don't.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: You still got assignments, though.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: So I did all that ahead of schedule.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: So I only trained and did all my assignments and tests ahead of schedule, went down the forward, fought, won the whole tournament, bro.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: So get so so give us give us the nuance.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: You said you trained yourself, that's major.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: I watched Floyd and the 10 people that he got around him, that's you know what I'm saying, getting them right.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Like and and everything that goes into it.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: So like give us the peek behind the curtain.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: What it what does it mean to train yourself?
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: What are you doing?
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: When did you wake up?
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Like, cause because I don't want people to gloss over this in the story, like oh, you trained yourself.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Nah, this ain't easy.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: It's not easy to do.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: So let me tell you this.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: I'm still a full-time student.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: So I still got classes ranging from 7 to 8 a.m.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: all the way through 3, 4 p.m.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Every day.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Every day.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: I'm full-time studio.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: I'm staying on campus.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: I'm a full-time student.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: So I wake up, had to be 5:30, 6 a.m., 5 30 at the ladies, right?
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: This is in college.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: In college.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: Nobody else there they'll tell you.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: I'll wake myself up, do my road mouse.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: I'm running.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Either I'm running or my roommate was uh my man BJ.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: He was part of the uh ROTC program at D of A.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: So I would go with him on PT days.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: They'll do the military workout.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: That's at 5:30 a.m.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: in the morning.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: I think 5 a.m.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: in the morning, right?
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Nobody told me to do this.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: This is part of his requirement.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: He gotta do it.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: He gotta do it.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: I'm with them, you know what I mean?
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Doing the same running, the same waist, the same swimming.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: Everything they doing, I'm doing this job, right?
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: I would do that, go to classes.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: When I leave classes around 3, 4 p.m., that's where I go to World's Gym and do my bag work, right?
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Crazy bag work.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: I do the sprints.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: I may lift a little bit, but most is just boxing stuff.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Did that Monday through Saturday, man?
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: How long?
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: Had to be for a month.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: But then check this out.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: I need spawn, right?
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Because I can't go into a fight without no spawn.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: And nobody boxes up here.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Ain't no boxes up here.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: So I get my fraternity brothers all together.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: I stayed at the frat house.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: I got all my alpha A5A Alpha Alpha brothers together.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: I said, look, bro, I need some rounds.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: So what I do, I line them up.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: I had like six or seven of them.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: They would do a minute apiece.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: No.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: They sacrificed that shit.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: They took them lumps, man.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: Get the documentary, man.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: They took them once.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they took them months, man.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: You can ask them right now to this day, but they took them months, man.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: A minute each.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: Line them up.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: I need the rounds, bro.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: I need the round.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Heck yeah, man.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: You still cool with those guys?
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, we still cool.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's my brothers, man.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: I had to, man.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: But you see the sacrifice played off of them too, because I won all the things.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: It's a win.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: You gotta go win.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Like they got a lump on their head, man.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: You gotta win this.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: That's what we said, man.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: I said, bro, I need some sparring.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: They jumped in there, they made that happen, man.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: So that's my front brothers, man.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: But then, like I said, he even text me, we would have won this whole day thing.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: You don't give me a feeling.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Heck yeah, my boy, my boy.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: So uh, yeah, we won that jump, man.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: So so give me the fight.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: So you go in and it's a it's a tournament, you beat somebody else, fight somebody else.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: So in an amateur tournament, bro, it's a it's single elimination.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: So if you lose, you're at the tournament.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: And Golden Gloves, four is so big, it was a six-day tournament.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: No.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: It started on Tuesday.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: That's two or six to five days.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Friday tournament, excuse me.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: So you're fighting for five days.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Fighting five days straight.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: If you lose, you out.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: If you win, you gotta weigh in.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: Not only just fight, you gotta weigh in every day, also, too.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: So you can't go crazy on eating food and rehydrate all that stuff.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if you're gonna make the way clad, you can't fight.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: And so I'm weighing in every morning, and I'm also fighting every night.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: So so again, talk about that.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: You came down from Arkansas.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Facts.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: You beat somebody up the first two days.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: If you missed this weigh in, you're done.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: You're done.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: So you sacrifice everything you come down there now, it gotta say in the box.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: And the question is, you know what we call losers?
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: No, we don't call people that don't make weight, losers.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: So, like that is your first fight.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Stepping on that scale is your first fight.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: We gotta make way first.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: So if I went down there and did all the sacrifice, all the training, all this sparring, and go down there and miss weight, I'm a loser.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: So not only did I fight every day, I had to make weight every day, but then peep gang.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: When you fight, you get bruises, you get fat lips.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: You had to fight the next day with all that stuff.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Well, me it was more so my body was was sore.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: My shoulders, my back, my legs, dude, they was tore up by the biggest.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: So there's a fight in a fight.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Like there's a fight within a fight.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Not only do you have to meet that person, yeah, but the the one that gets to the end, you done took some hits.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, definitely.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: So it's a it's a fight for a stamina, too.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: That's a whole different fight.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: That's so huge, man.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: And thank God for grace, man, because I was 19 at the time, I think.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 19 at the time when I won 18 or 19.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: And just when you're young, your body jumped back fast.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: But I remember going to the mall in full work, trying to get massages from the aging people in the little Kiosk.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, that is get that right there.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: We made it through, man.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: We won the whole tournament, man.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: And it just added a new confidence to me.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: For me to train myself and go down there.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Jump in there, fight fighting in a row.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: And every day get better, too.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Even the um then the debut, then semifinals.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I stopped to do it.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: It was like 40 seconds, knocked him out, 40 seconds.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: They ran the big right up.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: It's talking telegram, newspaper down there.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: It was a huge deal.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: You know, me setting up for the finals and stuff, man.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: So when so when I look back with my grown man mind, I'm like, bro, that's insane.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: A student training himself, yeah, going to school full time, having the discipline to go to the PT, also coming down here, also, you know what I'm saying?
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Like, I see it and I'm like, oh bro, this is cinematic.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Like you said, it was your normal at 19.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Like you used to eat a whole pizza, then go do whatever I mean.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: So looking back on it, did you know?
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Again, same question I asked when you first started boxing.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Like, did you know you were that good?
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: When you won this golden glove, did you know at the time how big of a deal that was?
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: At the Golden Gloves, yeah.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: Because you know, if you think about any tournament, you think about anybody that's boxed before.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: Number one question is Golden Gloves, you know what I mean?
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: That's no, that's the word that they asked.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: So Golden Gloves is gonna always be forever one of the most popular, high-ranking tournaments because of just the history of it.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: And then being a Fort Worth Golden Glove champion, dude, Fort Worth is city, maybe population 1.5 million people.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: Literally.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: So you're a champion of over 1.5 million people.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: That's a big deal.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: And then how Texas does it, you win Fort Worth, qualify for state.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: If you win state, go to nationals and stuff.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: So it's a qualifying tournament, man.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: Unfortunate for me, because I fought that one in August, and I had to take a week off of school, I didn't go to the next tournament, but I won the thing, and then it definitely knows, man.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: It's huge, but like you said, go back to that vision thing, man.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: You gotta really almost have that um be a little bit insane, you know what I mean?
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: Because the things that don't make sense, people always shy away from, you know what I mean?
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: Boxing, getting hit in the face, getting hit in the head, getting in the head.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: That don't make sense.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: That still don't make sense to me.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: But it's a caller, though, you know what I mean?
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: And I know that too, man.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna always, whatever God gave you, bang, it's gonna always sound crazy to somebody else.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: You know why?
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: Because he didn't give it to them.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: He gave it to you.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: So you listen and you take it and you show them how it's gonna go down.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: So that's why a lot of people they bouncing out this off their people, but you think about me moving here to do this.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Or you think about me going applying for this.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: They're gonna always tell you their opinion.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: But God gave something to you, you run with that.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: I ain't saying you can't bounce out of this off of somebody else.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: That's one thing.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: But you already know what God told you.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: It might not never make sense.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: You told me about what God told you back when you was 18.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what?
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: But sometimes we ignore it.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Or we try to make, we try to make use of it, or try to make it lighter, going like, well, maybe you meant this.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: Maybe I can do it like this.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: You know what I said.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: You know what I said.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: You know what I said.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: You know I got an old black dad.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: You know what I said.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Talk about sacrifice, bro.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: I wan I want to I want to hear from your perspective, your relationship with sacrifice, and for someone who doesn't understand the importance of making a sacrifice, like you had a a uh just profound, before we even turn the cameras on, bro, like just perspective on it.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, talk about it, man.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Like what is sacrifice to those who you know don't know that they might be compromising, for those who might be afraid to, you know what I'm saying?
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: Like, talk about it.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: Man, so the word the turtle sacrifice, man, it holds so much different weight for individuals, right?
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: Because what may be a big sacrifice for you may be nothing to me, and vice versa.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: So it's definitely personal, definitely, definitely subjective.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like we talked about earlier.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: If you want anything like worth having, it's gonna take sacrifice.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: It's gonna take you giving up something.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: You giving up your freedom, you're giving up sleep, you're giving up comfortability.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: It's gonna take you giving up something.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, friends, um, relationships, um, from parents too.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Bro, sometimes what God got for you, your parents ain't gonna understand.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna take a sacrifice, even like I told you in the Bible, man.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: We talk about Abraham, he's about to sacrifice his own son.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: Something that he's been praying for for years, that God in his old age finally blessed him, and God said, I need that back.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: He got and what did he say?
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: All right, all right.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: You know what's crazy about that story?
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, I get to the Bible story.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: What's crazy about that story is that whenever Pastor South?
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: Take the story.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: Whenever Abraham went to sacrifice his son, right?
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: When he got out the mule, he told other people there, he said, We gonna be right back.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: God gonna provide.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he didn't say, I'm gonna be right back.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: He said, We, even though in his mind he was gonna sacrifice his son, he knew it.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: He still told the people, we're gonna be right back there.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Which means that he didn't know how, he didn't know what.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: He knew he had to carry on what God told him to do, and God was gonna make a way.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: So, like we talk about sacrifice, man, it's huge, man.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: Anything that you feel like is worth having, like you told me earlier, it may be a little, it may be a lot.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: But something's gonna be a sacrifice.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: And this is part of it.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Man, there's a clip of Will Smith kind of giving this big speech, and he's talking about his son, and he and he said, like, man, my son is a bright kid, a B student.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Could be an A student, you know what I'm saying?
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: He's he talking about a dialogue that they have, and he said his son come to him and he's like, Man, I'm gonna make all A's this semester.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: And and Will was like, I wasn't trying to knock my son, but I told him, No, you're not.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Because to make all A's is different than making B.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: It's like if you want all A's, you gotta eat different.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Like, you gotta start hanging around different people.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: Like, you gotta sacrifice everything to get to this level.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: And so, like, there's a there, I think there's a level of, especially for talent people, like, man, we accept good, yeah, because we not willing to do, you know, and in the bio, I say, man, folks ain't willing to get hit and then go fight again.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Like, folks ain't willing to get hit by life and then go, wait, I gotta cut out the drinking, I gotta cut out the pocket, yeah.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: I gotta start talking to Shaw did.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: I just got that, you know what I'm saying?
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that sounds good too.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Like, you people goals and what they want to do and what they want to accomplish, it always sounds good until they get into it.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: Boxing always sounds like, man, I want to box, man.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: I wanna go in there, I wanna be a chairman, I don't make money, I wanna drive this car, yeah, I wanna have this, yeah, but you don't want to get hit in the head.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: You don't you you don't want to wake up at five years and go run.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: You don't want to miss out on this party because you couldn't wait, you know what I mean?
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: So everything sounds good to get down to nitty and gritty.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, boxing sound is really fun to John Tucker hit you hop right across them lips.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: And now you like you see it through.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: You got like that, how you be moving it like until you get used to it.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: Until you get used, bro.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: That's different, man.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: You see all the time bit, and then we talk about what you were talking before.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: People, what's the sign of insanity?
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: Doing the same thing and expecting different results.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Like Woodsman told his son, I know you're gonna get A's because you're doing the same thing you did to get a B.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: How is that gonna work to get you an A?
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Has to be something that's not given to it.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Same thing when you fighting people, man.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: It's you won that right there.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: We trying to be the best.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: To be the best, you can't put the same effort that you put in to be right here.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: And it just don't make sense.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: That's why I train so hard.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: And I tell people all the time, especially in they hate it, man.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: My classes I teach because they can't hear kids all the time telling you, I want to be the best to do it.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Or I I want to be him, I want to be there.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: I said, how you gonna be him?
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: You doing the same way to push up?
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: I told all you doing the push-ups.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: You doing 100 push like him.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: You trying to be better than him.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: You wanna beat him?
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're trying to do, you trying to be better than him, right?
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: You can't be better than him doing the same amount of work he's doing.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: You're gonna be more.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: So I don't know how people don't apply that to their life.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: People, they like the sound of I wanna be the best.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: I like the the accolades of like, I wanna be the champ.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: They don't want to put the work in, though.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Who who are your biggest influences like in life?
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: When you think about even being a kid to falling in love with Bate, like coaches you had, like, who do you attribute?
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: I know obviously, based off just talking to you, God has a big impact on your life.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: But like, yeah, when you think about people who've directly shown you, hey, you gotta sacrifice, hey, this is what discipline looks like, hey, this is what it looked like to get knocked down and get back to life.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Do you do you have people in your life that have kind of been who are some of those people?
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: It's it's like, I don't know, man, call single people's album.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: It's a long list.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: A village.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: Definitely my um, my dad, man.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: My father, he was one of the guys, he never boxed, he did martial art, but he never boxed.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: But even just, he don't even know it.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Rest in peace, daddy.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: He don't even know it, but watching this man work two jobs, right?
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: And tell me, hey, Kevin, I'm gonna take a nap before my next job, wake me up at this time so I can get ready to go to work.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: And this is like midday.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: I go on that daddy, just like he just went to sleep maybe 30 minutes ago.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: Wake him up.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: Now one time they go like, ah, give me five more minutes.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: He got up, sat up at the edge of the bed, took a breath, let's go get it.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Dad right there just it etched something in me and showed me like, dude, man, you just get it done.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: All the sacrifice.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: I know he was tired.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: I know he didn't want to work two jobs, but he didn't complain once.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: And one time they said, Why I gotta do this?
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Why me?
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: He just got up, got his win back, went back to work.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Definitely my dad, man.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: Kevin Lightbury, my current coach, my mentor, is also majority owner of straight right boxing fitness.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Man, I owe a lot, a lot of success to him, man.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: He not only teach me my skills in boxing, taught me about business.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he taught me how to run a business.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: And that's why I'm part owner of straight right.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: He taught me how to work day-to-day.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: So he also taught me that you don't have to go the same route these cats did to be successful.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: People tell people all the time, basically Kevin all the time, boxing's not lucrative.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: Boxing gym ain't lucrative, and you're gonna lose money doing this.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: We've been having jail since 1999.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: We got two locations up here now.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: It just shows you don't let nobody tell you no, but you know you got inside you.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: And that definitely my wife, man.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: My wife, Danielle Henderson, man, she's a huge, she don't even know it.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's such a huge motivation to me.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: People always look at me with motivation, but that's my rock.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: That's the only person in my entire life that knows everything about me.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Only person that I've ever allowed in my entire life to actually also hurt me.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Because I'm so defensive and I'm so stand back that I give you what I give you.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: Like people know what I give you.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: She knows everything.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: It means that she has a power to really hurt my heart if you wanted to break my heart.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: And so she is a huge motivation, huge uh uplifting to me.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: I can't be here without her.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: It keeps.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Bro, I I'll be like listening to you, and I'm just like, man, um, from your perspective, give me your proudest fight moment.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: I know, I know Golden Gloves, yeah, it's it's huge.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: But you didn't knock some people out.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Big facts.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Some folks that we know.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: Big facts, man.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: Some folks that that you know, you know.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: You didn't put some hands on yourself, so many of you, you know what I mean?
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: And so like when you look back over just your your list of you know, accolades, accomplishments, experiences, like what are some of those things that stick out to you that you still replay like?
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: This was a major moment.
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: That's crazy, man.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: That's a good question.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Um one major moment in my career, I was already professional at this time.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: I was 10 and 0.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: And this is why it was so big because a coach and uh, we kind of planned for this to happen, and it happened to the team.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: So when we turned professional, before then, we got all the way up to number four in the country as an amateur, ranked number four in the country.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, ranked number 12 in North America, ranked number 25 in the world.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Like we was doing it, you know what I mean?
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: How many?
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Two questions.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: How do you become pro?
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: And then when you say 25 in the world, how many boxers we talk in?
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, but the world, crazy.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: So not just the city.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: No, that's the city.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: The world.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: And so um, when you are amateur, you know what I mean?
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: You you fight in the local fights, yeah.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: And the next time you go to the regional fights, then you go to national fights, then you have international competition.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: So I I made it the team USA.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: So I was literally number four ranked uh middleweight at the time in America under USA boxing.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: I fought with Team USA, international Kazakhstan, number one team in the world.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 34:08SPEAKER_02: So we did all that thing.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: And so you had to really compare your skills against the best in the world.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: Literally.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: Literally in the world.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: So I got all the experience, right?
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Go back to the story.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: I'm 10 and 0.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: And when we turn professional, this second part of your question.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: You anybody can turn pro in boxing.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: Any right part right there.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: I don't recommend it, but you can turn pro in boxing too.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: I need to train with you.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: I ain't trying to get no extra lumps.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna tell you why, because professional boxing, your record stays with you forever.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: That you recognize, you know, in football or basketball, the season starts over, record starts over, not in boxing.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: So whatever your record is, it's forever.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: So that means that your experiences and the stuff you learn, your craft, it gets honed in the amateurs.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: So where you fight and you're not getting paid for it, but you perfecting your craft, sharpening your skills.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: So when you turn pro, climb the ranks, you know what I mean?
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: So the problem is that if you don't take the Olympic route in the amateur, which is extremely hard to get into, right?
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: We was on track to do it.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: But if you don't get to that Olympic pedestal, then your career gets hard because you don't have no big major funding behind you.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: So whenever you have any type of business, which is professional boxer, it's a business without any funding, things are a little rocky.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: So I was taking fights with me and my coach, we talked about a game in my career.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: Because we didn't have, even though we had the skill for the Olympic pedigree, we didn't have the money.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: It ain't cheap.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: It ain't cheap.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: And so that means now the opponents that would normally fight a guy that's 0-0 or 0 on 1-0 in boxing, they talk about Olympic, they're like, nah, man, this dude got experience, he's not gonna catch out.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: No, we ain't doing that.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: So our plan was get to 10-0.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: We can fight guys 0-12, fight guys 3-30.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: Whatever we can just, we can find a budget, we find uh just fights and get you to 10-0.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: When we get to 10-0, we're gonna have a breakout fight.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: Dude, when I say to the T, that's our guy worked it out, man.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: Dude, on my 10th professional fight, I won my first title in the EMA middleweight title at 10-0.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: I get a phone call to fight in Philly against the champion Philly.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: He was 11-1 knocking.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: You get the call.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I get the call.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: We get the call.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Hey, opportunity, you 10-0.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: This guy 11-1.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: He is knocking cats unconscious in Philly, man.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: They got a lot of money behind them.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: They pushing them, they're promoting them to be the silverback or other call them.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: A weight class higher, too.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: No.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: So I accept the fight.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: We go like, we look him up, we see his skill, we see me and Kevin, my coach, we go like, man, we can be him.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Same coach you got now?
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: Same coach you got now.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: We go, we can be him.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's gonna take a lot of work, a lot of sacrifice, a lot of training.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we can beat him though.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: What what what goes into that process?
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: Because what I'm trying to give people is a peek behind the curtain a little bit.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: So you scouting right now, like you watching film, like you like, okay, I can beat him.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: What is it in that moment?
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: His his left ain't quick enough.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, his footwork ain't good.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: Like, what make y'all say this dude bigger than me?
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: That's calling him a gorilla.
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: You said that.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: So what makes-center is a B-Rock.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: If you listen, that's the name B-Rock.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: You can you can change this out.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: That's what we saw.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: So we watched film, we saw he was strong.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: We saw he liked the bra, but he didn't have a lot of experience we're talking about, like the ring experience.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: So even though he was 11 to 1 and he's sleeping stuff, you know, and he learned fast.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: He was he was good, but he didn't have the amateur experience I had.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: I had over 70 amateur fights.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: He had maybe 10.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: So that that that counts.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: Because now we can start getting him into deeper waters and see if he faded away.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: It was a 10-round fight.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: So I I our goal was to go in there and push him and see if he can hold and see if he can swim.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: The journey paid off.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: And so we knew we were going to, first off, whenever you're in boxing, you go to somebody else's hometown in their state, in their city, you got their hometown judges, hometown referees, hometown commission.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: So all that goes against you.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: You gotta sleep something.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: You gotta sleep.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: That's a big no-no in box.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: You don't ever go to somebody else's backyard to fight them.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Because you don't ain't gonna cheat you.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: We knew that we tend to know.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: They bringing us in, they think we fool.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: Even at the wedding.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: They think we fool, man.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: We came into the waiting, dude.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: They caused a whole commotion.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: I told my other dude was like, nigga, you know where you at?
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: You in Philly, you might not make it out.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: I go, oh, that's what the boxer said or boxers said that to me.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: This coach, like, man, he's scared.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: He I said, wait, I flew all the way to Markans to Philly to fight you in Philly, but I'm scared.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: I'm like, bro, make that make sense.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: I'm here.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: Like if I was scared, I wouldn't be on a plane if I was scared.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: What do you mean, bro?
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: I'm here.
- 38:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Man, the next day, but even more.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: I did something in a fight I normally do.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: Because it's such a big moment.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: Cameras, the hype, when we walk out, everybody boom, as a couple, we in Philly.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: The stadium's going crazy.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: The energy ecstatic.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: Energy ecstatic, man.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: You can feel it.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: And so I'm so hyped up to punch a dude in the face for all the shit he was talking.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: All the trash he was talking, right?
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: All the training cam I done went through, man.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: I'm ready to hit him right in his face.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: I go out there and I start tussling, you know what I mean?
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: And so I have what called adrenaline dump.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: So in the second round, my legs go none.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: I can't feel my legs.
- 39:27SPEAKER_02: I'm literally out there fighting.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: If I didn't look down and see my legs was there, I wouldn't know they was there.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: They gone.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: I did something in the corner at a fight.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: I've never done in my life.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: I haven't done it since.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: In the first round, in the corner, I go to the corner.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: I'm breathing.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: Coach talking to me.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: I look to my cup man, Matt.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: I go, what round we in?
- 39:45SPEAKER_02: He goes, we in round two chunk.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: I go, I thought we were in round seven, dude.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: After round one, he goes, round two chunk.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: I go, oh, dude, my legs are gone, right?
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: In the whole fight, my coach is telling me to do stuff like I still got legs.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: People left.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: People right, I go, coach.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: And I kept going, fifth round, Kevin.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: I can't feel my legs.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: And so that, and so you gave you what you're saying is you gave all your strength at the beginning.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: In the beginning.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: And so, like by the round two, you like, I gave a fight's worth of energy.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, my legs are cooked.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: And so, but crazy, if you watch the fight right now, you can't tell that.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: I know it.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: I'm holding it together though.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: I'm still working, I'm still jabbing, I'm not grabbing, I'm not running.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: I just can't feel my legs.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: So every time in the corner, my coach Kevin was like, Chan, I need you to do this.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: Need you step around.
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: I keep going, coach my legs.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Finally, dude, in the sixth round, Kevin said, Hey, Chan, I need you step around, throw the uppercut.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: I said, Coach, my legs.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: He told me, fuck your legs.
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: Do this for your kids.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: I said, Oh, all right, bet.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: I looked at him, I'm like, I got you.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: What about that next round?
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: I knocked him up.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: That's more like a movie, dude.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: Like a movie.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: He said, fuck your legs, do this for your kids.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 40:57SPEAKER_02: Stopped them.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 40:59SPEAKER_02: To this day, you watch the film, you can't tell my legs are cooked.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: That's his first laws.
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: They go, first laws.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: Well, first real life.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: He had the first laws earlier on his career.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: They built them up.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: He went 10-0 with almost all knockouts.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: Stopped him.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: Not only did I stop him, I broke his orbital bone, broke his eye.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: Broke it.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: His eye was swollen shut, man.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: So you go to Philly, and what's crazy about this fight?
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: We talked about the fight in the hometown, right?
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: We got the scorecards of the fight.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: The fight I won because I stopped him.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: I just wanted to see one judge had me winning, one judge had me losing, one judge had him to draw in the seventh round.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: That's why.
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: That was gonna take it from me, man.
- 41:33SPEAKER_02: Dude, when I was out, I was already putting them in there.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: I heard him early on.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: I stumbled on it with no legs.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: And they was gonna take the fight from me, man.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: That was gonna take it from me.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: So that's why you know y'all go in there, man.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know we have to knock them out.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: I hope going game plan, training camp was to stop them.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: Not to win on decision, not to make it through the TRL is to stop them.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: That won the UABL for International Intercontinental Belt.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fighting man.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: High says, Yes, sir, yes, sir, yes, sir.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: When you think about, I got a couple more questions.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: When you when you think about anybody that's trying to go and do something, yeah, whether that's win a golden glove, whether that's become a a super mental weight champion, yeah, whether that's get your music education degree.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: What's the what's the biggest thing that you would say to a person that wants to accomplish anything, no matter what it is.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Like what's the biggest word?
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: It's it's really simple, man.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: Figure out what you want to do.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 42:33SPEAKER_02: That's always first.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: Like you told me, figure out what you want to do, then figure out how you're gonna get there.
- 42:39SPEAKER_02: And then last but not least, run it.
- 42:41SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: Because the dream only starts when you stop.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: People gonna always tell you, well, you shouldn't do it like this, you shouldn't do it like that.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: I wanna if I was me, I wouldn't do it.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: They're gonna always tell you their opinions on something like, they ain't the one in that getting punched on.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: So the dream only starts, bang, when you stop.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: So once you figure out what you want to do and how you're gonna do it, run it.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: Don't let nobody tell you no.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Your mama, your daddy, your girlfriend, your spouse, whatever it is.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: Don't let tell them you know.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: You know, God put something and put something inside your heart, inside how you're supposed to be doing.
- 43:12SPEAKER_02: Don't let nobody else tell you no, but you live.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: Now, of course, you said than done.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: Because some people need to help try to figure it out and find out what that is.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: But I think they know.
- 43:23SPEAKER_02: I think they just don't want to give into it.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: You're afraid.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: A lot of people are afraid of success, too, man.
- 43:29SPEAKER_02: They're afraid of success.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: They're afraid.
- 43:31SPEAKER_02: So, quick, quick story.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: As a professional boxer, um, who was trying to tell the story that he would do every training count, but every training count, he would leave out one part of training count.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: Just to have an out.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: So if in case you lost a fight, he said, Well, that's why I lost a fight.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: So he would do everything, the running, the sparring, one e-write.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: Or he'll do E-write, the spawn, one run.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just just so if you if you lost a fight, you're gonna like stay.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: You know, I didn't really run that count.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: That's why.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: But we know I didn't eat right.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: So it some people are scared of success.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: They will set themselves, sabotage themselves.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just to not go into going into that.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're just scared of it.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: People say they want it all the time.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: Did it come down to it?
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: You gotta you gotta confidence about yourself that's genuine.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: It's not fake.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: You didn't walk in here like bang on the chair, I'm trying to shake my head next to you.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Because some people, some people they gotta project, they gotta overcompensate.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: But for you, it's natural, it's calm, it's genuine.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: How does a person build that type of confidence?
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: That's crazy, man.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: You gotta know where your confidence comes from, man.
- 44:42SPEAKER_02: I know where my comes from, and that's God.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Philippians 4, 12 and 13.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: I know where my confidence comes from.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: A lot of people, they're looking for confidence in material things and their accolades and their spouses and stuff.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: That can give you temporary happiness, you know what I mean?
- 44:57SPEAKER_02: It don't give you joy.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: I know my confidence comes from God.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: And with God, it'll stay.
- 45:03SPEAKER_02: When you know you got something from Him, can nobody take that from you?
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: You can walk into a room like you said, like, hey bro, like, why you so happy?
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Like, why you just walk around like you ain't got no care in the world?
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: You can feel that, you know what I'm saying?
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: I just say that.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: You feel like you're like, bro, I feel a confidence in you because I know where it comes from.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: I know all the work and circumstances I did, and I sacrificed a lot.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: I done gave a lot.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, from retina detachments to shoulder tears, I done gave so much to this sport that I still know where my strength comes from in this guy.
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: No matter what I did, how many push-ups I do, how many miles I run, how much weights I lift, how many times I spar, I still get my strength from God, man.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: He gives me that.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: But it takes a lot, especially as the man in society, to admit that.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: Because men, we only value for what we bring to the table.
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: So if we say somebody else is to think for it, it takes away from us.
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: But no, no, no.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: I got no problem humbling myself.
- 45:59SPEAKER_02: I know where my shit can come from.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: Can we do this again, bro?
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: And I'll tell you before we start.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: Man, for sure, for sure.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: Where can we follow you, keep up with you, uh, support you?
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Like plug anything that needs to be plugged, what's coming up?
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: Why did you knock Jake Paula?
- 46:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, we'll come back to that.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: That's what I do.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: Put a little hot sauce in there, man.
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: Yes, we're gonna be back.
- 46:30SPEAKER_02: You gotta talk about that J Paul sub.

- 46:57SPEAKER_01: Can you can you Yeah, for sure.
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: So I'm part of this newest league called TBL Team Boxing League.
