- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Christian from the Datsents. We are about to
- 0:03Speaker 1: bark on a New Zealand and Australian tour, heading Australia
- 0:06Speaker 1: for the first time in eleven years. So there's a
- 0:10Speaker 1: long overdue tour from us and we're pretty pumped about
- 0:13Speaker 1: it and I'm very much looking forward.
- 0:15Speaker 2: To it many. Hey, thanks for joining us tonight, My pleasure.
- 0:20Speaker 2: As you say. Brother Datson has hit Australia for four
- 0:23Speaker 2: shows in March, starting in Adelaide on the twenty fifth,
- 0:25Speaker 2: before hitting Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne over consecutive nights. So
- 0:29Speaker 2: not long now, Bro, you've packed it ready to give?
- 0:32Speaker 1: Yeah, almost almost. We've got to go to New Zealand
- 0:34Speaker 1: first and do some shows there, and so by the
- 0:37Speaker 1: time we hit Australia we should be pretty much heading
- 0:40Speaker 1: our stride. I think.
- 0:42Speaker 2: What sort of delights have you got in store for
- 0:45Speaker 2: fans on the Joe Bro.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Well, I think you know, we've been running for a
- 0:49Speaker 1: long time now. We've got quite a few albums, so
- 0:51Speaker 1: we're going to try and to kind of cover everything
- 0:54Speaker 1: as a we're nice for retrospective and also throw on
- 0:57Speaker 1: a few new songs from a record that we're hoping
- 1:00Speaker 1: to release kind of middle of this year.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You guys have always had a reputation for your energetic
- 1:07Speaker 2: and fun life performances, mate, So what is it do
- 1:10Speaker 2: you think about a Datson's live show that makes them
- 1:12Speaker 2: stand out?
- 1:14Speaker 1: I think, first and foremost that comes from the fact
- 1:18Speaker 1: that we genuinely enjoy playing live. We like playing our songs,
- 1:22Speaker 1: we like playing for an audience. So anything that comes
- 1:25Speaker 1: from that just comes from a genuine enthusiastic joy of
- 1:28Speaker 1: what we do.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys don't hold anything back up there, mate,
- 1:33Speaker 2: Like obviously you guys quite a few times live, But
- 1:36Speaker 2: how's the body holding up made? Like I know, I
- 1:38Speaker 2: have trouble walking a letter box these days, and you
- 1:40Speaker 2: guys go to stick up there.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like, well, let's put it this way. Yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 1: we don't leap off speaker stacks to the same degree
- 1:49Speaker 1: we used to in the old days. And it's you know,
- 1:53Speaker 1: it's not unusual for us to have to like physically
- 1:56Speaker 1: warm up for a show, which we never had to
- 1:58Speaker 1: do in the old days.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah. I was actually going to ask about that too.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Like you guys always you hit the stage running and
- 2:04Speaker 2: know there's no warm up time for you guys, you're
- 2:07Speaker 2: just on from the start, Like, does that come naturally
- 2:09Speaker 2: or do you have to sort of psyche yourselves up
- 2:11Speaker 2: backstage before you hit there?
- 2:13Speaker 1: Oh? I think it comes naturally because you know, we're
- 2:15Speaker 1: genuinely excited to be playing, so that kind of enthusiasm
- 2:19Speaker 1: bobbles over from the second you start playing.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Looking through the press release made like it
- 2:25Speaker 2: describes the band as all thrills and no thrills. Like,
- 2:29Speaker 2: that's a pretty cool statement. It's not a bad way
- 2:31Speaker 2: to sum you up.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'm not really sure.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I wasn't the first either. I'm like, and they
- 2:36Speaker 2: take them the piss here and it's like no, if
- 2:38Speaker 2: you actually look at it, it is a compliment. I
- 2:41Speaker 2: ate it.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, it sounds good. I'll take it. And
- 2:44Speaker 1: it rhymes and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So I have rhymes. It's got to be good. Guys
- 2:52Speaker 2: have recently released this single, Ugly Leather Mate. So how's
- 2:55Speaker 2: the reception been for that one?
- 2:57Speaker 1: That's great. We actually released that. Oh it's like a
- 3:00Speaker 1: couple of years ago. We Yeah, we haven't been touring
- 3:04Speaker 1: an Australian new Zoom for quite some time, but we
- 3:06Speaker 1: have been touring Europe for the regularly the last few years,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and we put that out as a tour single over there.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So this is the first time was released in Australia
- 3:15Speaker 1: New Zealand, but it came out for Europe a while
- 3:17Speaker 1: ago and Recepsion was really good. We made a video
- 3:21Speaker 1: for it and it's kind of for our first new
- 3:23Speaker 1: song out for a while. I think it's kind of
- 3:26Speaker 1: very much a classic old school sounding Datson's track, So
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know, you kind of like what we've done over
- 3:32Speaker 1: the years. I think you'll enjoy it.
- 3:35Speaker 2: You mentioned I you Albumblie before, mate, So have you
- 3:37Speaker 2: have you released any singers off that yet or is
- 3:39Speaker 2: it still in the future.
- 3:41Speaker 1: We were hoping to get one out in time for
- 3:43Speaker 1: this tour, but I'm not sure if that's going to
- 3:45Speaker 1: happen because we're terrible at sticking to deadlines. But we're
- 3:48Speaker 1: hoping to have We're kind of mixing the record right now,
- 3:51Speaker 1: so we're hoping to have it out kind of like
- 3:53Speaker 1: the middle of the year if possible.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, And is it typical dats and stuff that people
- 3:58Speaker 2: expect from me or are you guys matured and stuff
- 4:01Speaker 2: as you get older.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I think it's a natural progression from the last record.
- 4:06Speaker 1: If you familiar with or like Eye to Eye, I
- 4:09Speaker 1: think this is kind of follows on from that, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: it's kind of in a similar sort of style and
- 4:14Speaker 1: genre to the songs and the feel of that record.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's going to be your eighth album mate, like
- 4:21Speaker 2: a right, And did you think it becomes easier or
- 4:24Speaker 2: harder to come up with fresh interesting material or the
- 4:26Speaker 2: more you write?
- 4:29Speaker 1: Well, I think, as in anything in life, the more
- 4:32Speaker 1: you do something, the more you kind of come to
- 4:35Speaker 1: a situation where you have to avoid repeating yourself. So
- 4:39Speaker 1: in some senses, it gets easier to write songs because
- 4:42Speaker 1: you get more experienced and skilled at it. But on
- 4:44Speaker 1: the other hand, there's only twelve notes, so you kind
- 4:47Speaker 1: of like have to keep trying to find fresh ideas
- 4:50Speaker 1: within the kind of genre of stuff that you like
- 4:53Speaker 1: doing so, which is kind of harder to do as
- 4:55Speaker 1: you get older. So there's kind of like pros and
- 4:57Speaker 1: cons to time passing on that respect.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yes, right now. The Dassin's deservedly had great early success
- 5:04Speaker 2: after pretty much the whole world fell in love with
- 5:06Speaker 2: your music after you two thousand and two self titled
- 5:08Speaker 2: debut album, mat did that come as a bit of
- 5:11Speaker 2: a shock to the band or or you're always confident
- 5:13Speaker 2: in the quality of that first album.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Oh, I would say it was very much a shock.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I mean, we're just four guys from Cambridge, New Zealand
- 5:20Speaker 1: who played music purely for the joy of it, and
- 5:22Speaker 1: the concept of somebody from small town New Zealand kind
- 5:25Speaker 1: of getting that much exposure success on a larger, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 1: world stage was just never in out expectations or thoughts
- 5:33Speaker 1: at all. So it was kind of a mind blowing
- 5:35Speaker 1: experience to go through.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Early success led the chores with Metallica. You played festivals
- 5:41Speaker 2: on big day out yet the main stage and I
- 5:43Speaker 2: was fast mailer. Did you actually get a chance to
- 5:45Speaker 2: take it all in and enjoy the ride or was
- 5:47Speaker 2: it just a blurback then?
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'd say more of a blur. I mean, we toured
- 5:52Speaker 1: the first record NonStop for literally two years, and you know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: criss crossing the world playing all this different. I was
- 6:00Speaker 1: pretty much jet lagged the entire time. I mean it's
- 6:03Speaker 1: hard to kind of step back and have any perspective
- 6:06Speaker 1: on something like that when you're doing it and kind of,
- 6:09Speaker 1: you know, we enjoyed ourselves quite a lot that some
- 6:12Speaker 1: of it is literally a blur now and the memory.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Did you remember the point where I actually sat back
- 6:17Speaker 2: and you went like, fuck, man, this is pretty good.
- 6:20Speaker 2: We're doing all right?
- 6:22Speaker 1: Oh? I mean yeah, you know, as I said, we
- 6:25Speaker 1: never expected that to happen, and we did enjoy it
- 6:29Speaker 1: in the moment. I mean, we all just liked it
- 6:31Speaker 1: because we gave us a chance to keep being a
- 6:34Speaker 1: band and playing music and getting to do what we
- 6:36Speaker 1: love to do, and we got to do it professionally.
- 6:38Speaker 1: You know, that's our job. So that was like a
- 6:40Speaker 1: really awesome thing.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it's pretty much epitomized rock and roll
- 6:45Speaker 2: as far as I'm concerned, mate, So you're more than
- 6:47Speaker 2: qualify to answer this final question. But what would you
- 6:50Speaker 2: list is the top five commandments of rock?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Ah? I don't know if I could come up with five,
- 6:58Speaker 1: but I think.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Give us three, mate.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Well number one, Number one, be true to yourself and
- 7:03Speaker 1: in terms of the music, so be true to yourself.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And then number two, enjoy what you do, because the
- 7:11Speaker 1: only reason to do music these days is because you
- 7:14Speaker 1: enjoy what you do. Like, you know, in terms of
- 7:17Speaker 1: making money or anything like that, it's a hard road
- 7:20Speaker 1: to take. So I'd say, enjoy what you do and three.
- 7:26Speaker 1: What's the third one? This is probably one from perspective
- 7:31Speaker 1: of age a little bit here, but learn how to
- 7:33Speaker 1: pace yourself.
- 7:35Speaker 2: When you're younger, you.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Don't know how to do that, but if you're in
- 7:38Speaker 1: it for the long haul, you need to learn how
- 7:40Speaker 1: to pace yourself.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I said, brother. Well, thanks for your time, mate. Dats
- 7:44Speaker 2: will be in Australia from March or twenty fifth, So
- 7:47Speaker 2: where can people get tickets? 'll find out more information
- 7:50Speaker 1: If they go to the Datsons dot com they can
- 7:52Speaker 1: find out all they need to know about tickets and
- 7:54Speaker 1: information there
