- 0:44book of Armenian folklore written down by AG Cyclomian.
- 0:48This story involves a sun going to the ends of the earth just to
- 0:51heal his stepmother. And it's a long 1, so strap in.
- 0:57OK, let's begin this epic. The wicked stepmother.
- 1:05Once Upon a time, there's a noted hunter who was a widower.
- 1:09He had a son. He married a new wife, and then
- 1:11he got sick. On his deathbed, he said to his
- 1:14wife. Wife, I am dying.
- 1:18And I know that when my son grows up, he will follow in my
- 1:20footsteps. Take care and be sure not to let
- 1:24him go hunting in the Black Mountains.
- 1:28After the death of the hunter, his son grew up and became a
- 1:30hunter. One day his stepmother said,
- 1:33Son, when your father was dying, he said that if you became a
- 1:37hunter, you should not go hunt in the Black Mountains.
- 1:41But the lad, ignoring his father's advice, took his bow
- 1:44and arrow and mounted his horse and rode towards the Black
- 1:47Mountains. As soon as he reached him, a
- 1:51giant on a horse of lightning appeared and exclaimed, Hey, you
- 1:56don't you know my name, how dare you come and hunt on my grounds.
- 2:01And he threw down 3 gigantic maces at the lad, who quickly
- 2:05dodged them by hiding under his horse.
- 2:09Now it was his turn. He drew his bow and arrow, took
- 2:12aim and shot the giant and nailed him to the ground.
- 2:17At once he mounted the giant's horse, which brought him to a
- 2:19magnificent palace gilded all over with golden gems.
- 2:25There a maiden as radiant as the sun appeared in the window,
- 2:28saying Human. The snake on its belly and the
- 2:31bird with its wings could not come here.
- 2:33How could you? Your love brought me here for a
- 2:36maiden, answered the lad, who had already fallen in love with
- 2:39the charming maiden. But the giant will come and
- 2:42tarry it into pieces, said the maiden, who had already fallen
- 2:46in love with the lad. I have killed him and there's
- 2:49his body, answered the lad. The palace door opened and the
- 2:54lad was greeted by the maiden, who told him that she was the
- 2:57daughter of a king and that the giant had kidnapped her and kept
- 3:00her in that palace with 40 handmaids.
- 3:04As you have killed the giant, she added, I shall be your wife
- 3:07and all these maidens will serve us.
- 3:10And they accepted each other as husband and wife, opening the
- 3:14treasures of the giant. They found countless jewels,
- 3:17gold, silver, and all kinds of wealth.
- 3:19The lad had a beautiful palace with so many treasures and the
- 3:22most wonderful wife in the world, things that he hardly
- 3:26could have dreamed of. And so he decided to live there
- 3:30and go hunting every day. One day, however, he came home
- 3:34sighing. Ah, alas, alas, how?
- 3:39Now what is the matter? Said his bride.
- 3:40Why did you sigh? You are sweet, my love, said the
- 3:45lad. But my mother is also sweet.
- 3:48You have a place in my heart, but my mother also has a place.
- 3:52I missed her, so I sighed. Well, said the young bride, Take
- 3:57a horse load of gold to your mother.
- 3:59Let her live in happiness, the lad said.
- 4:03I'll go and bring her here. Farewell.
- 4:05Go on, said the young bride. The lad went to his stepmother
- 4:08and told her all that he had done, and he brought her back to
- 4:10the palace in the Black Mountains.
- 4:13There she was the mother-in-law and therefore the head of the
- 4:16whole palace. Both the bride and the maidens
- 4:18had to submit to her. The lad used to go out hunting.
- 4:23The stepmother, being well versed in witchcraft medicine,
- 4:26went and secretly smeared some medicine on the corpse of the
- 4:29giant, and he was healed. Falling in love with the giant,
- 4:34she took him to the palace and hid him in the cellar, where she
- 4:37secretly visited him since she was afraid of her stepson.
- 4:41Wishing to have total control, the witch said to the giant one
- 4:44day. Giant, how can I send my son on
- 4:47an errand where he won't come back?
- 4:51With the advice of the giant, she entered her room and put a
- 4:53layer of crispy bread under her bed.
- 4:56Then she laid down. In the evening, when the lad
- 5:00returned from hunting, he heard that she was sick and he asked
- 5:03What's wrong mom? Oh son, exclaimed the witch with
- 5:07a sickly voice. I am very sick.
- 5:12I shall die. And as she rolled over, the
- 5:16bread began to crackle. Listen, exclaimed the witch, my
- 5:21bones are cracking. What do you need, Mom?
- 5:26What can I get for you, Asked the lad.
- 5:29Oh, my son, said the witch, There is only one remedy for my
- 5:34sickness, and that is the melon of life.
- 5:39I shall never heal if I do not eat one.
- 5:44All right, mother, said the lad, I will bring you the melon of
- 5:46life. He started on his journey and
- 5:50after a long, long way he was invited into an old woman's
- 5:52house. She asked him where he was going
- 5:55and he told her and she said, Son, you have been lied to, this
- 6:01quest will kill you, do not go. But the lad insisted and the old
- 6:05woman said, well then, let me help you.
- 6:09On your way you will come to a mansion which is home to 40
- 6:12giants. They go out hunting during the
- 6:15day, but you will find their Dame there kneading dough.
- 6:20If you are agile enough to run and nurse on that giantess
- 6:23without being seen by her, you are safe.
- 6:26If not, she will make one mouthful of you and devour you.
- 6:30The lad went, and everything the old woman had said was true.
- 6:35He was clever enough to nurse on the giantess without being seen
- 6:37by her. A plague on her.
- 6:40Who advised you? Exclaimed the angry giantess.
- 6:44I would make a good morsel of you, but now you have nursed on
- 6:47my breast. You are like one of my own sons.
- 6:50Let me hide you in a box, lest the 40 giants come in and find
- 6:53you and devour you. She shot the land in the box.
- 6:58In the evening the 40 giants came and smelling a human being
- 7:01they said. Oh mother, all the year long we
- 7:04hunt beasts and birds which we bring home to eat together and
- 7:08now we smell a human being who you have no doubt devoured
- 7:12today. Did you at least leave us a few
- 7:14bones to chew? The Dame answered.
- 7:19I wasn't out hunting, you probably ate a human and that
- 7:22smell is your upper lip. I didn't eat any humans.
- 7:27Yes ma'am, you did, exclaimed the giants.
- 7:31My nephew came here. He is the son of my human
- 7:33sister, answered the giantess. The giants shouted.
- 7:38Oh mom, let's see our cousin. We promise not to eat him.
- 7:43The giantess took the lad out-of-the-box and brought him
- 7:45to the giants. We're very pleased to see a
- 7:47human being so small but so beautiful and so manly.
- 7:52They passed him around like a little curio.
- 7:55Ma, why did our cousin come? Asked the giants.
- 8:00He has come for the melon of life to take back to his sick
- 8:03mother. You must go and get the Melano
- 8:05of life for him, not us, Exclaimed the 40 giants.
- 8:09We aren't strong enough. The youngest of the 40 brothers
- 8:13however was tiny and he said to the lad, Cousin, I'll go with
- 8:18you and get the melon of life for you.
- 8:21Only take a jug, A comb and a razor.
- 8:26On the following day the lad took what was necessary and
- 8:28followed the tiny giant who brought him to the garden of the
- 8:31Melon of Life, which was guarded by 50 giants.
- 8:35The guards were asleep. The lad and his companion
- 8:38entered the garden without being seen and picked the melon and
- 8:41began to run. But they were just crossing the
- 8:45hedge when the panting of the giant caught on the fence and
- 8:48the hedges crackled like Thunder and all 50 giants awoke.
- 8:53Thieves, human beings, a good meal for us, and began to chase
- 8:57the lad and his companion. Throw your jug, comb and razor
- 9:02behind you, cousin. Exclaimed the tiny giant.
- 9:06The lad did so and behind them the plains and mountains were
- 9:09swallowed up by a sea that the giants had to walk around.
- 9:13Then a jungle popped up that they had to get through.
- 9:17Then the grass turned into broken glass as sharp as a
- 9:20razor. Before the 50 giants could catch
- 9:23them, the 39 brother giants came to the rescue of our two and
- 9:27took them safely to their home. The lad returned to his home.
- 9:32On his way, however, he stopped at the House of the old woman,
- 9:35who asked if he had succeeded. Yes, I have, Auntie answered the
- 9:39lad and he told her his tale. In the middle of the night when
- 9:44the lad was asleep, the old woman took the melon of life out
- 9:47of the lad's bag and put a common melon in its place.
- 9:51In the morning, the lad brought the melon to his stepmother who,
- 9:54eating it exclaimed, Oh, happy I am healed.
- 9:59The lad again went hunting and the witch said to the giant,
- 10:03Look here giant, this didn't work, give me another deadly
- 10:06challenge for him. She did the crispy bread trick
- 10:10again and called her stepson in, and she said in a weak voice, Oh
- 10:14son, I am dying, what's wrong? What do you need?
- 10:20The only remedy for my sickness is the milk of the fairy
- 10:25lioness. If you loved me, you would bring
- 10:29it. The lad started again, and he
- 10:33stopped off at the old woman's house.
- 10:35I'm going this time to bring a skin full of milk from the fairy
- 10:38lioness for my mother, said the lad.
- 10:42The old Dame again begged him not to go, but then she said OK.
- 10:46Since you're set on going, let me give you some advice.
- 10:50On the other side of this mountain is the den of the fairy
- 10:53lioness. She is troubled by a boil on her
- 10:56paw, and you will find her at the entrance of her den, holding
- 10:59her paw above her head and roaring.
- 11:02Now you must sneak up without being noticed, and take aim with
- 11:06your bow and arrow and shoot the boil.
- 11:09At first a great pain will make her roar, but soon she will feel
- 11:13comfortable and give you whatever you ask.
- 11:17The lad went and found the fairy Lioness, as foretold by the old
- 11:19Dame, roaring on account of her pain.
- 11:23The lad at once taking aim, shot the boil.
- 11:26The pain of the lioness increased, and she exclaimed,
- 11:29Ouch, who shot this arrow? I'll find him and devour him,
- 11:33Ow, ow, ow. But soon she felt comfortable,
- 11:37and said, Who shot this arrow? By heaven I would give him the
- 11:41moon and the stars. The lad at once jumped out
- 11:46before the lioness, who seeing him, said, Was it you that
- 11:49healed me? Yes, answered the lad, ask for
- 11:53whatever you desire. Give me some milk from your
- 11:56utters, which is the only remedy to heal my sick mother.
- 12:01In that caves of the lioness there are two cub skins.
- 12:04Bring them to me. The lad brought her the two
- 12:07whole skins. The lioness filled the skins.
- 12:10Here, said the lioness, take these and go, and be careful not
- 12:14to harm my little Cubs on your way.
- 12:17The lad took the two Cubs, skins full of milk and thinking the
- 12:20lioness left. On his way, however, he slyly
- 12:23stole the two beautiful Cubs and began to run.
- 12:27But the mother lioness smelled her young ones and pursued the
- 12:29lad, overtaking him and exclaimed, What's wrong with
- 12:33you, human? That is exactly what I asked you
- 12:35not to do. I humbly beg your pardon.
- 12:38Answer the lad. I was happy with your kindness,
- 12:41and wanted to have a permanent keepsake of you, and what better
- 12:44thing could I carry with me than your Cubs, which I will nourish
- 12:47on a princely diet and keep as my faithful friends.
- 12:51The lioness, being much pleased with this answer, allowed him to
- 12:53carry the Cubs. He soon came to the old woman's
- 12:57house, who asked him if he brought the fair in lioness's
- 13:00milk. Yes auntie, I've brought it,
- 13:02said the lad, presenting the 2 skins full of milk.
- 13:07During the night, however, when the lad was sound asleep, the
- 13:10old woman poured out the lionesses milk from the skins
- 13:13into a cask and filled them with common goat's milk.
- 13:17On the following day, the lad, loading the skins on the back of
- 13:19his horse, took the Cubs and went home.
- 13:22The stepmother, drinking the milk, exclaimed.
- 13:25Oh good, I am healed. The lad again went hunting as
- 13:30usual. The witch said to the giant,
- 13:33Giant, I'm losing my patience, give me a task that will kill
- 13:37that boy dead. What can I do?
- 13:40Replied the giant. Your son is the bravest hero
- 13:43that has ever lived. No mortal can Vanquish him.
- 13:46He will return from any expedition, no matter how
- 13:49dangerous it may be. Tell him to bring you a jug of
- 13:53the water of life. The witch again feigned sickness
- 13:57and when the lad came to see her she said, Oh son, I am dying, my
- 14:02bones are breaking. And the crackling of the crispy
- 14:07bread echoed down the hall. What can I do for you?
- 14:10Ma asked the son sadly, because he was tired of her impossible
- 14:14requests. The only remedy for me this time
- 14:18is the water of life, and you must go and bring me a jug, or
- 14:22else I will die. The lad at once mounted his
- 14:28horse, and taking with him the two Young Lions, he went to his
- 14:30auntie and told her about the stepmother's request.
- 14:34Oh, son, exclaimed the good woman, even I can see that she's
- 14:38setting you up. There must be a profit in your
- 14:40death. This is the most dangerous
- 14:42expedition that any human being has ever undertaken, and no one
- 14:46has ever returned from the task you have started upon.
- 14:49Be advised, go back. Your mother is a liar.
- 14:53No, said the lad, I have to go, the old woman said.
- 14:58As soon as you put the jug down, you'll be in a deep sleep.
- 15:01First scorpions, then serpents, then beasts of prey, and at last
- 15:05all kinds of genie will attack you.
- 15:07You will surely die. Oh well, said the lad, taking
- 15:11the lions with him. And he started for the fountain
- 15:13of the water of life. He came to the fountain and
- 15:17found the water oozing out of a tiny stream.
- 15:21As soon as he placed his jug under it, he fell asleep for a
- 15:23week. Soon scorpions began to attack
- 15:27the sleeping hero, but the lions destroyed them all.
- 15:30Then the terrible serpents attacked the lad.
- 15:32The lions destroyed them too. Soon a whole army of beasts
- 15:37surrounded the fountain looking for the lad.
- 15:41The lions, after a bloody battle, beat them too.
- 15:45At the end of the seven days and nights, the lad awoke and he was
- 15:49shocked by the pile of dead beasts around him.
- 15:52The 2 lions were now sitting on either side of their master and
- 15:55watching him. The lad saw them covered in
- 15:58blood and realized that he owed them his life.
- 16:02Then he washed them in the water of life and returned to his
- 16:04auntie. Did you bring the water of life?
- 16:07She asked. Yes auntie, I did, answered the
- 16:10lad, presenting her with a jug full of water.
- 16:13It was not that you succeeded, returned the old woman, but
- 16:17Heaven and your faithful lions that preserved your life.
- 16:21During the night, as the lad was sleeping, the old woman poured
- 16:23the water of life into another vase and filled the jug with
- 16:26common water, which the lad took back to his stepmother and
- 16:30drinking it, said, Oh, happy I am healed.
- 16:35The following day the lad again went hunting.
- 16:38The witch said to the giant, Can't you think of a way to get
- 16:41rid of him? If you can't, I'll get rid of
- 16:43you. Your stepson's a unique hero,
- 16:47and no one can kill him. But you said the giant.
- 16:50How? How?
- 16:51Exclaimed the witch with great joy.
- 16:53Tell me how, and I will do it. Don't you remember the three red
- 16:57hairs on his head? As soon as they are plucked, he
- 17:00dies. On the following day, the witch
- 17:03said to the lad. Come, son, lay your head in my
- 17:06lap and take a nap. The lad did so and soon slept.
- 17:11The witch immediately took hold of the three red hairs and
- 17:14pulled them out. A spasm or two later and the
- 17:17hero died. Now giant, said the witch, take
- 17:22that sword and chop this corpse into small pieces.
- 17:26Not me, I can't chop such a hero, you coward, Shouted the
- 17:31witch, and taking the sword, she chopped the corpse into small
- 17:34pieces, put them into a sack and threw them over the garden wall.
- 17:381 little finger fell into the garden.
- 17:42The lions learned that their master was killed, and that his
- 17:45chopped body had been put into a bag.
- 17:47They immediately took hold of the bag and carried it to the
- 17:50old woman, the Hostess of the hero.
- 17:53Opening the bag, she took out the body, and putting every part
- 17:56in its proper place, made it whole.
- 17:58Only the little finger was missing.
- 18:00She explained to the lions what was missing, and they at once
- 18:03went, and smelling their master's finger in the garden,
- 18:06they found it and brought it to the old woman, who put it in its
- 18:09proper place. Now she brought the milk of the
- 18:12fairy lioness which she had secretly preserved, and poured
- 18:14it all over the body. Immediately all the broken
- 18:17bones, muscles and sinews came together, and all the members
- 18:21being united, the body became as sound and delicate as that of a
- 18:24newborn babe. Then she brought the melon of
- 18:27life and put it before his nostrils.
- 18:30As soon as the lad had smelled it, he sneezed 7 times.
- 18:34Then she poured the water of life down his throat.
- 18:37At once the lad opened his eyes and jumped up, saying, Oh, what
- 18:41a sound sleep that was. It overpowered my senses.
- 18:45Sleep, exclaimed the old woman. Yes, asleep.
- 18:49A dirt nap and she told him what had happened.
- 18:54Now my good auntie, said the lad, you have done a great
- 18:56kindness, A kindness that I can never reward.
- 19:00May heaven reward you. He brought a horse load of gold
- 19:04and a horse load of silver for her, saying These are for you.
- 19:08Spend as much as you like and pray for me as long as you live.
- 19:13The lad came to his palace and found that his beautiful bride
- 19:16was locked in the dark cellar where she was left to starve the
- 19:21witch, his stepmother was in an excess of merriment with the
- 19:24giant and half a dozen kids around her.
- 19:27They were all amazed to see the hero enter and the giant was
- 19:30about to run through a secret door when the lad seized him
- 19:33saying What's up coward, why are you running?
- 19:36Stop and solve this puzzle for me, whose ugly youngins are
- 19:39infecting the very air of my palace.
- 19:43They are my children from your mother, answered the giant.
- 19:47Mother. I have no mother, exclaimed the
- 19:49lad. You increase so soon, do you?
- 19:52Now you're going to have great merriment.
- 19:55Go and bring me from Yonder mountain wood enough to build a
- 19:58large pile. The giant obeyed, and soon a
- 20:01large pile of wood was built in the courtyard of the palace.
- 20:06The lad struck a Flint and lighted the wood.
- 20:08Soon the whole pile was on fire, burning like a furnace.
- 20:12Now giant, said the lad, take a hold of these bastards and throw
- 20:16them into the fire. 1 by 1. The giant obeyed and all of the
- 20:21children were burned on the pile.
- 20:24Bring now Yonder witch and throw her into the fire, ordered the
- 20:27lad. She also shared the fate of the
- 20:30bastard children. Now shall I throw you also?
- 20:34Asked the lad of the giant Hero. Exclaimed the giant.
- 20:39I honor you, I will obey you well then, said the lad, I will
- 20:43not kill you. Come pass under my sword and
- 20:45swore obedience to me. The giant kissed the sword and
- 20:49passing under it, became the bond man of the lad.
- 20:53The lad then released his beautiful wife from the dark
- 20:55prison. They celebrated their nuptials
- 20:58for 40 days and 40 nights and enjoyed a happy life ever after.
- 21:03Thus they attained their wishes. May heaven grant that you may
- 21:07attend your wishes. Three apples fell from heaven,
- 21:10one for me, one for the storyteller, and one for him who
- 21:14entertained the company, the and.
- 21:43That was a long one. I was surprised a little bit by
- 21:47the mild swear and also burning the children.
- 21:50Yikes. I was also surprised, you know,
- 21:53just that whole story, but also how long it was.
- 21:57Still, it was a fun one, but a long 1, so I'll shut up now.
- 22:01The podcast shout out is to Alexa Texture, which just
- 22:03recently dropped an episode. This is March that I'm recording
- 22:07this and it's on hiatus a bit, but it's back on.
- 22:12But it's not. But it is.
- 22:13I'm not sure, but it's a lovely intro to etymologies of words.
- 22:17Amy and Ryan do a great job of telling stories about words and
- 22:20just being cool word nerds. And my listener shout out is to
- 22:25Pittsburgh, home of my aunt and uncle.
- 22:28This city is one of the ones that I've been to a few times.
- 22:31I've been to the Church, Brew Works, and someday I might even
- 22:34see a Penguins game. And so the yin's that are my
- 22:38listeners in Pittsburgh, I say thank you and good night.
