- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo, Episode 68. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Hello! Hey Lucas, I've been thinking — last episode we went clothes shopping, but what if you're not feeling well enough to shop? Lucas: Good point. Today we're going to learn some phrases you might need at the doctor's office. Let's start with a simple one: 'Ich bin krank.' That means 'I am sick.' Luna: Ich bin krank. I am sick. Okay, simple enough. Lucas: Exactly. Now if you have a specific symptom, like a headache, you say 'Ich habe Kopfschmerzen.' Luna: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. That's a mouthful. Kopfschmerzen — headache, right? Lucas: Right. Kopf means head, Schmerzen means pain. So literally head pains. Let's break it down: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Luna: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Lucas: Great. Now what's another common symptom? Fever. 'Ich habe Fieber.' Luna: Ich habe Fieber. I have a fever. That one's easier. Lucas: Yes. Fieber is similar to English 'fever'. So remember: Ich habe Fieber. Luna: Ich habe Fieber. Lucas: Now imagine you're at the doctor's and you need help. You can say 'Können Sie mir helfen?' — 'Can you help me?' Luna: Können Sie mir helfen? That sounds formal, like 'Sie'. Lucas: Right. 'Können Sie mir helfen?' is polite and appropriate for a doctor. Repeat after me: Können Sie mir helfen? Luna: Können Sie mir helfen? Lucas: Perfect. And the doctor might ask you 'Was fehlt Ihnen?' — 'What's wrong with you?' literally 'What are you missing?' Luna: Was fehlt Ihnen? So you'd answer with your symptom. Lucas: Exactly. For example, 'Was fehlt Ihnen?' — 'Ich habe Kopfschmerzen.' Let's practice that little dialogue. Luna: Okay, I'll be the doctor. Was fehlt Ihnen? Lucas: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen und Fieber. Luna: Oh, that's rough. So you combine them? Ich habe Kopfschmerzen und Fieber. Lucas: Yes, you can say 'und' for 'and'. Good job. Now let's review all the phrases we've learned today. Luna: Alright, hit me. Lucas: First: Ich bin krank. Luna: Ich bin krank. Lucas: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Luna: Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. Lucas: Ich habe Fieber. Luna: Ich habe Fieber. Lucas: Können Sie mir helfen? Luna: Können Sie mir helfen? Lucas: Was fehlt Ihnen? Luna: Was fehlt Ihnen? Lucas: You've got them. Take this medicine. There you go — you just had a doctor visit in German. Luna: That was fun. I think these phrases will really come in handy. Lucas: Absolutely.
