- 0:03Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm our host Andrew McGivern for
- 0:10August 23rd, today's National Ride the Wind Day, a celebration
- 0:15that perfectly captures the spirit of freedom, adventure,
- 0:19and that primal human desire to soar.
- 0:22This special day has a fascinating origin story that
- 0:26combines human ingenuity with our eternal dream of flight.
- 0:31National Ride the Wind Day commemorates August 23rd, 1977
- 0:36when the Gossamer Condor became the first human powered aircraft
- 0:40to win the prestigious premier prize.
- 0:43On that historic day at Minterfield in California, pilot
- 0:48Brian Allen peddled his remarkable aircraft through a
- 0:52Figure 8 course, proving that humans could indeed power their
- 0:56own flight. The Gaza Mer Condor was designed
- 1:00by Doctor Paul McCready and represented the culmination of
- 1:05centuries of human dreams about flying under our own power.
- 1:10The Kremer Prize, established in 1959 by industrialist Henry
- 1:15Kremer, challenged inventors to create a human powered aircraft
- 1:20capable of flying around a specific horse with 10 foot
- 1:24hurdles at the start and end. It took 18 years before someone
- 1:29succeeded, but when they did, it changed our understanding of
- 1:33what's possible when human determination meets innovative
- 1:36design. But Ride the Wind Day isn't just
- 1:39about aviation history. It's about that universal
- 1:42feeling of freedom that comes from moving with the wind,
- 1:46whether you're flying a kite, sailing, cycling on a breezy
- 1:51day, or simply standing with your arms outstretched, feeling
- 1:55the air flow around you. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:59from the aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, who once said the most
- 2:05difficult thing is the decision to act.
- 2:08The rest is merely tenacity. Amelia Earhart's insight
- 2:13captures perfectly what National Ride the Wind Day represents,
- 2:18that moment when we stopped dreaming about freedom and
- 2:21actually pursue it. Think about the courage it took
- 2:24for Brian Allen to climb into that experimental aircraft in
- 2:271977. The Ghazam or Condor was
- 2:31basically a bicycle with wings held together by wire, tape and
- 2:36human ingenuity. The most difficult part wasn't
- 2:40the physical challenge of peddling through the air, it was
- 2:43the decision to actually try. Earhart understood something
- 2:49profound about human achievement.
- 2:51The biggest obstacle is rarely the actual doing.
- 2:55It's the decision to begin. Once we commit to action, once
- 3:00we decide to ride the wind in whatever form that takes for us,
- 3:04everything else becomes a matter of persistence and
- 3:07determination. The beauty of Ride the Wind Day
- 3:11is that it reminds us that this decision to act doesn't have to
- 3:15involve historic aircraft or death defying stunts.
- 3:20It can be as simple as deciding to go outside on a windy day and
- 3:24feel truly alive, or choosing to pursue that dream you've been
- 3:28putting off, or finally taking that trip you've been planning
- 3:32for years. Every day we have opportunities
- 3:36to ride the wind to make decisions that move us toward
- 3:41freedom, adventure and the life we actually want to live.
- 3:46But like Earhart said, the hardest part is always that
- 3:49initial decision to act. The tenacity comes naturally
- 3:53once we're committed. It's that first step off the
- 3:57ground that requires courage. That's what Amelia Earhart meant
- 4:01about tenacity being the easy part.
- 4:04Once you're committed, once you've made the leap, you
- 4:07discover resources and resilience you didn't know you
- 4:10had. So today, in honor of National
- 4:13Ride the Wind Day and the brave souls who first peddled their
- 4:17way into the sky, ask yourself what decision you've been
- 4:21avoiding. What wind have you been afraid
- 4:24to ride? Remember Amelia Earhart's
- 4:28wisdom. Remember Amelia Earhart's
- 4:32wisdom? The most difficult thing is the
- 4:34decision to act. Once you've made that choice,
- 4:38you might discover that the wind has been waiting to carry you
- 4:42all along. That's going to do it for today.
- 4:46I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:50tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:56with another daily quote.
