- Mark Hayes (00:01.142) All right, ladies and gentlemen, welcome back. Another exciting edition of two of two men in black and white and honest conversation. All right, Brock and Ellis joins me now live from the very, very deep, deep, darkest part of the South Mississippi. All right, I'm in Atlanta, fresh outside the perimeter. We call it OTP. All right, Brock. I know you drove through the south. this is my so-called southern accent, and I'm I'm I'm welcome to use it because both my parents from the South, North Kagalaki and South Kagalaki. but we grew up in New York, so we grew up speaking the King's English. I'm sure you heard some of the some of the dialect in the South this time around. first of all, the food. What what what have you eaten so far? yeah. Lots of taste. Brock Ganeles (00:47.526) Food's fantastic. Okay. First of all, like some sort of fried chicken that I'm told had cayenne pepper cayenne pepper in it. fried okra, grits. Yeah, found a great restaurant, Tupelo Honey, in Knoxville, Tennessee last night. And yeah, ate like a king. Can't wait to to hit the restaurant here in the lobby of the hotel tonight. Looks like they got looks like they got ribs on the Mark Hayes (00:55.274) Sure. Mark Hayes (01:04.833) Nice. Mark Hayes (01:12.278) Nice. Mark Hayes (01:16.018) slow and low. That's the secret here. Slow and low. Brock Ganeles (01:17.166) So yeah, I'm gonna go gonna go hard. Gonna go hard. Gonna break my veg my my pseudo vegetarianism to a lot of a lot of already on this trip. Mark Hayes (01:24.248) There you go. Yeah, it's hard not to eat meat in the south. Yeah, we we Brock Ganeles (01:29.456) But Mark, I'll give you some other observations we dig in too deep. In Knoxville, I think I told you at the beginning of the meeting. I I think I saw one black person the entire time I was in Knoxville, Tennessee. Maybe I was I was in the part of town near where they had the World's Fair. So is this segregated, like literally walking the streets, picking up dinner, walking back. I went for a walk this morning, literally, all white people. No one even working at the hotel, all white people. Got the Jackson, Mississippi. I got a different Mark Hayes (01:39.928) Sure. Mark Hayes (01:43.852) Yeah, yeah. Mark Hayes (01:54.284) Yep. Brock Ganeles (01:59.463) different story. It's pretty much I feel like it's almost entirely black people. I saw a couple other white people checking in, but like pretty much everyone working here is black. So Mark Hayes (02:00.833) Yep. Not surprised. Mark Hayes (02:11.915) Yep. Yep. Yep. No surprise. Brock Ganeles (02:15.778) Skyload, right? So I like almost went from a white enclave and parachuted now into a black enclave. I just y you notice it, right? So stark that it's you know, really, really noticeable noticeable. Mark Hayes (02:22.228) In the C Mark Hayes (02:28.661) Right. It's it's weird too because you know there are not very many black pockets as we've seen in Tennessee outside of Memphis. Nashville has, you know, a section of the city. Knoxville has a very small section of the city over by Knoxville College. and remember you got the University of Tennessee there, which has what 50-60,000 students plus faculty and staff. predominantly white except for athletes. and then you got you know a a a mountainous area. I don't know if you guys came through the mountains, but Tennessee is very mountainous, very hilly. but yeah, you don't you don't see large pockets of African American communities in the state of Tennessee. Now, however, Mississippi demographically blue, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia. I'm gonna say Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, it's close. But we are demographically blue in the South. That's why they're painting it red with these with these redrawn districting lines. Brock Ganeles (03:39.566) And with the voter suppression, right? They gotta they can't let a huge vote maybe, I guess, come out of Jackson. Mark Hayes (03:41.302) Yes. Mark Hayes (03:45.973) Right. Right. And that's the frightening part. That's why they they can't get any representation there. They've had great candidates there. the former Brock Ganeles (03:54.769) We have one now. There's a black candidate for Senator. We're gonna have to start looking into him on the Democratic side for Senate in Mississippi, who you would say, does he have a snowballs chance in hell? I mean I guess if people are if ever citizen was allowed to register and actually voted, he would probably win is what you were saying. But we're we don't we don't get close to that. And and allow it. Mark Hayes (03:59.351) Yeah. Right. Mark Hayes (04:15.071) Right. Right. And and then and then remember the worst performing schools are all in the South. Right? Kentucky, the Carolinas, you know, Mississippi, Georgia, you know, we're all in the forties. you know, Mitch McConnell, state of Kentucky in the forties when it comes to education. So, you know, they keep the schools you know, city of Atlanta. You know, we have issues at our schools here. And so, you know, in order to get, you know, these bigger companies and corporations to come here with their senior executives, they've got great private schools. That's why the vouchers are so important, right? So the rich people can get a break on their private school tuitions. Right. That that's what it's all about here in the South. And you see it vividly. Now, if you go just up the road in Jackson, Mississippi to a little town called Madison. Brock Ganeles (05:01.948) Yeah. Mark Hayes (05:13.025) You'll see where a lot of the bigwigs that work in the city of Jackson live. Beautiful homes, nice big yards, nice and quiet. It's the old, you know, the old southern hospitality thing is out there. You know, you probably got a Costco out there now and a Sam's Club, and just, you know, the Shangri-La of Mississippi. Because there's always a nice neighborhood not far away from the urban area. Right? 'Cause somebody's gotta be in charge. Brock Ganeles (05:45.159) Well supposedly we 'cause we look up the all these factoids when you're taking a long ride is the movie The Help. was filmed in Jackson, but you drive into the city, you're like, where's that nice street? And where all those people from that show live where they had the help. Mark, white guy from the upper east you know, from the Northeast, first time stepping foot in the state of Mississippi is today. Check that checking that off the bo checking that box. Didn't realize Medgar Evers was from this that this was the town that he had gotten gotten killed in. Mark Hayes (05:52.117) Yeah. Mark Hayes (05:55.755) Right. It was a long time ago. Mark Hayes (06:10.923) Mark Hayes (06:19.005) yeah. yeah. You can drop by the top. Brock Ganeles (06:20.318) and you just you notice I'm trying to be in tune, you notice so many things, right? Like the radio stations. I mean every other station was religious. Mark Hayes (06:27.586) Yeah. Mark Hayes (06:32.277) Conservative or religious, yeah. Brock Ganeles (06:33.402) Yeah. Religious stations, the radio's just filled with them. Religious stations, pop music, a hip like kind of a hip hop station, eight country stations. And then of course I stumbled into Sean Hannity and listened to him rant for five minutes about first Platiner in Maine, where he, you know, basically spit facts that he just didn't even understand about like being a fisherman in Maine, but he's telling his MAGA audience and then he just went after Tel Rico calling him like, you know, a vegan. Mark Hayes (06:57.749) Yeah. Brock Ganeles (07:03.326) and that he says God's non-binary. So I get to hear what the people down here, the white people, the MAGA down here is being fed, which I avoid like the plague in the Northeast, but you you drive enough, you start seeing what the other country's hearing. Drove by a Trump Mark Hayes (07:14.786) Yeah. Brock Ganeles (07:21.336) A Trump store. You don't see those in the northeast. A Trump superstore right on the border of Tennessee and Georgia. Actually a superstore. with a huge billboard. Huge billboard picture of Trump and arrows pointing to the store. Sticking to myself, like are people really g getting off the highway to buy hats? Yeah, and they are. Yeah, they are. Mark Hayes (07:28.641) Yeah. Yeah it's prime Trump country. Mark Hayes (07:40.438) Yeah. Yeah. It's a destination. You know, there there's big money in in in in the Trump you know, kind of spin-off. you know, people down here think he's you know the bee's knees for whatever reason. And it's frustrating because you can't tell him anything that I mean it doesn't mat we look, we've seen the Epstein files. Right? We've seen enough to know. You know, that his name is in the Epstein files more name more times than Jesus' name is in the Bible. So, you know, we know what it is, and it's frustrating that we can't move forward because you know that's the goal of this administration. It's obvious. The goal is to move backwards in time, to go back in time to a time, you know, when I just heard a blurb today. Where who was it? A state senator in Alabama was hoping that the Supreme Court would overturn the Fourteenth Amendment. They don't want me to be a citizen, bruh. They want to strip away all the rights I have that guarantee me the r as a citizen, that I'm guaranteed as a citizen. People are saying the quiet part out loud now. That's the danger in Donald Trump and and and Heg Seth. And there's an article in in The Atlantic today about being black in the military, in well, in Heg Seth's military. You know, the military was supposed to be colorblind. You know, do you care who drags you out of that cave in Afghanistan or in Iran when we go in? Right? Like, I don't know if anybody's gonna be asking, you know, are you MAGA? You know? Because if you are, I'm leaving you here. You know, that's not what we're trained to do in our military. But, you know, our military doesn't look like the precise force, the precision force we've been told it was. Mark Hayes (09:46.699) We're kind of getting our ass kicked in Iran as the strikes continue. Are they talking about that down there? Brock Ganeles (09:53.307) Haven't gotten that conversation yet. But it made me think about like when Tammy Duckworth would tell that story, right? When your helicopter goes down, you don't care what your your saviors look like, right? You just know it's got a American flag on the back of that chopper coming in to get you and you're you know, you're be you know, you're gonna live another day, right? And that's Mark Hayes (09:55.349) Yeah. Mark Hayes (10:00.72) Mm-hmm. Mark Hayes (10:06.229) No. Mark Hayes (10:12.033) Yeah. Mark Hayes (10:17.641) Right. Brock Ganeles (10:19.376) You know, look, that's one of the things we took the most pride in, right? That country yeah, no man behind and country above person and the sacrifice and that we're Americans first. It you know, we all came from other places, but then we became Americans and we're Americans first. And that's all being stripped away. I mean, MAGA, like you said, the quiet part, I guess it was the quieter part back in the day, you know, the the Elite Atwater Mark Hayes (10:22.785) Right. We leave no man behind. Mark Hayes (10:31.831) First. Right. Mark Hayes (10:47.222) Mm-hmm. Brock Ganeles (10:49.43) led movement type of movements were trying to get the same they were trying to get the same outcome, but they wouldn't they wouldn't do it as boldly. Maybe they didn't have the Supreme Court on their side yet. Right? They wouldn't talk openly about changing the Constitution because they felt that wouldn't have worked from a PR point of view. But now, now you have the Supreme Court, like now nothing's off the table, right? Everything is under Mark Hayes (10:52.32) Other strategy. Right. Right. Mark Hayes (11:11.498) Right. Brock Ganeles (11:18.848) you know, could be unwound. I mean that's why so many women are concerned, right? Because women's rights are, you know, being just under attack and and being taken away with like, you know and they always say the most dangerous fascism is the when it's done through legal means. Mark Hayes (11:21.1) Right. Mark Hayes (11:25.929) Under attack. Yeah. Brock Ganeles (11:38.203) And that's how it's being done in the US, right? It's trying to manipulate our court system so every action appears legitimate, right? You're not gonna strip your rights, Mark. They're just gonna take away the 14th Amendment. They're just gonna do a political and legal process. So, well, that's just the rules, and then they're and then they're gonna argue rule of law. Gotta go by rule of law. Mark Hayes (11:38.241) Right. Mark Hayes (11:57.516) Yeah. Yeah. Yep. Yep. Brock Ganeles (12:02.966) and and play it as it was a legitimate process. So they don't have to, you know bring in the military, no don't have to bring the big guns, although we know those are hovering out there when necessary. Mark Hayes (12:08.664) Yeah. Mark Hayes (12:12.823) Right. Mark Hayes (12:16.748) Yeah, well, the rule of law only applies to those who can't afford to defend against it. you know, we're we're we've seen we're seeing Mr. Chow down in South Carolina get away with murder. Get away with shooting a kid who was running away from him in the back. But we're saying that this young man got a fair trial, right? Because he's gone. Right? They're saying Carmelo Anthony. Brock Ganeles (12:33.606) Running, go on. Mark Hayes (12:45.698) Got a fair trial over in Texas. Right? How did he get a fair trial? When did he have when did he ever have a fair shot? Right? Is it he's a black kid living in Texas? Right? Like we didn't, no one cared what started the fight, what what led to the altercation. All we know is the end result. But today we're seeing pictures of the victim's family with the DA. With the prosecutors, with and they're all hugged up, taking pictures. Laughing looked like a family picnic, looked like a family gathering. Everybody was quite familiar. So that's a f that's what we call an a fair trial. Meanwhile, this kid goes to prison for life at 18 years old? Or 17, whatever he is. I'm not trying to justify homicide, if that's in fact what happened. I wasn't there. We weren't there. But We're all supposed to believe that, you know, when when when when the jury renders its decision or the court renders its decision, it's supposed to stick. Except when it's those of us with melanin in our skin. Right? Those 34 those 34 felonies. Let me get those 34 felonies and see what kind of job I can get. The white guy can be president. The black guy can't pump gas. Well, we don't pump gas anymore, but he can't can't pack a bag at the at the grocery store. You know, you can't wait tables. You know, you can't work for an HVAC company. Nobody wants you coming in their house with 34 felonies. Right? I mean, it's it it we are such hypocrites now. And it's so sad because, you know, I grew up in a household where my parents refused to allow race to impede their progress. And we never we we never talked about race as an impediment to being who you want it to be. Right? So my parents never told you can't be on TV. You're you're you're you're black. Well yeah you can you can be on TV if you work hard enough, if you do the things you're supposed to do to get on television. Mark Hayes (15:09.43) If you immerse yourself in the business and you network and and you figure out how to get those jobs, you can be successful. And I was able to. I'm just glad my parents never, ever, you know, saddled me with you know the kind of baggage that racists carry. Right? Number one, it's hard to be racist as a as a as a black person because you have so little control. But Brock Ganeles (15:37.18) You don't you can't, you don't have the power. Definitionally. In America you can't you can't be racist 'cause you don't have the power. It's a it's a power dynamic. Well, Mark, you went I mean, I guess did have the benefit of good public schools, right? At least you started in a good public school. Mark Hayes (15:39.34) Yeah, you don't have power. No. Yeah. Mark Hayes (15:49.591) Yeah. Exactly. And we lived in the Bronx before we lived in in you know Peakskill, but my parents knew they didn't want to raise it. Remember how bad the the Bronx was in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. It was pretty bad. Yeah. Yeah, no doubt. Right. And I remember before the Apache the Bronx came out, I said to my parents, We used to live there. I was like, what were y'all thinking? How do we survive? But yeah. Brock Ganeles (16:03.088) seventies, yeah, Bronx was burning. You know, they made movies about Fort Apache, right? They made movies about the Bronx. Brock Ganeles (16:19.012) But I make the To dive back little bit, I think part of the hypocr the hypocrisy that you pointed out is part of what's gonna be on the ballot in November. It ties to the corruption, right? The corruption and the hypocrisy are sort of intertwined. The what's good for me isn't good for you. Like my people can storm the Capitol, but like you're you're the ones that incite violence. Like there's just a lot of a pack of lies. And the second thing that I think will is gonna just remain a Mark Hayes (16:28.15) Yes. Yes. Brock Ganeles (16:50.398) Common theme in America is the fact that Trump's war of choice And all his bullshitting about how close we are to solving the world problems and all the wars we've solved. And now we have the one in Iran that he just out of left field got into with no discernible reason or strategy, you know, maybe played by Bet Netanyahu, but a very willing dupe to go along because he felt strong and tough to bomb somebody. Mark Hayes (17:10.114) No Brock Ganeles (17:21.188) And now we're back, you know, ceasefire's never really happened because Israel's always been bombing Lebanon. That was always a farce. Mark Hayes (17:25.708) Right. Right. Brock Ganeles (17:29.444) And now we're back to bombing Iran. So we're kinda back to the start of where we were maybe like four months ago. All those lies that were told to us because Trump didn't want remember the w the lies about how Trump was too busy closing this closing this deal. He couldn't go to Don Jr. Right. He had to be he had to be in his station all weekend. Of course you probably got about thirty six holes in the golf also. but how are prices gonna come down if we're still bombing Iran and the Strait of Hormuz is still closed and gas price Mark Hayes (17:41.314) Yeah. Call the D off. Brock Ganeles (17:59.311) Prices are still elevated to say the least, and then trigger trickling through all the other inflation that comes with the higher energy prices. Are we just gonna continue to be told that either we need to sacrifice, we need to suck it up? Mark Hayes (18:02.36) Die hi. Brock Ganeles (18:16.334) It's not happening like Trump likes to say. It doesn't matter to him. It's not something he thinks about. Affordability is a hoax, something the Democrats made up to hurt Trump. Like a are we gonna have a whole summer of that kind of rhetoric when for the rest of us we're just gonna get price gouged everywhere we go? Well we are. That's what it's gonna be. Okay. Mark Hayes (18:31.35) Yeah. Mark Hayes (18:36.716) Yes. Yeah. Brooke Rollins, Secretary of Agriculture, was on the hill, told Raphael Warnock, yeah, I don't you know, Raphael Warnock asked her if there was going to be some subsidies for, you know, the urban areas since the farmers were getting it because they were hurting and being being you know, unduly harmed by the administration's policies. Are there gonna be some subsidies for the inner city areas, for, you know, the urban areas? yeah, we We we can't do that. Can't do that. She basically can't Yeah, she basically there's no money for it for for the brown people, for the black folks. We don't have any money for that. So we're gonna continue to gouge wherever we can. yeah, but she I mean, had no problem looking at the sky high prices. You know, it it kind of reminds you, I was reading about and and cause I had forgotten about the time. Brock Ganeles (19:13.434) No money for that. Mark Hayes (19:39.255) Big W, Bush 41 had gone to the grocery store and didn't know how to work the scanner. Remember that? Back at like the night back in 90, 91 when he was running against Bill. Bill Green didn't know how to work the scanner. You're out of touch, bro. When was the last time you went to the grocery store? Right? You are so out of touch that you you haven't even heard about the new technology called the scanner. I mean, Jesus, read a newspaper back then. They were still printing papers back then. So, you know, again, these people are out of touch. They're all the one percenters. They could give a shit about the American people. They could give a shit about the Iranian people. Um, and you know, the good thing is the rest of the world is seeing America for what it is. Um, the Jarvanka experiment in Albania is going left. They're under investigation for corruption, and I love it. You know, meanwhile, Don Jr.'s, you know. Net worth is ten times what it was 18 months ago. You know, so let's take let's take the House, let's take the Senate, and let's get some investigations going. Let's get some people locked up. You know, that would be justice. You know, let's get Don Jr. in a cell next to let's say Carmelo Anthony. I would love to see it. You know, love to see it. Do a little state time, get Don Jr. a little state time. Nice and tough Texas state time. Hope he violated some regulation, some rule there. Get him a little get him some Texas state time. But yeah, man. you know, you you you look at mass incarceration, Mississippi, you know, again, another one of those states with a high rate of black male incarceration. Alabama, one of the worst. I think Alabama's about to there's a just a HBO special documentary. Brock Ganeles (21:34.212) Yeah, it was good. Mark Hayes (21:34.614) of the Alabama solution and how bad the prisons are there. So bad, you know, the prisoners are sneaking phones in to you know to to describe the conditions. Brock Ganeles (21:46.758) But they got visibility, but are they gonna get any change? K Ivy's not gonna do anything. Like there's no impetus for change. Mark Hayes (21:50.88) No. Brock Ganeles (21:57.785) until right, until like the voter yeah, until there's change, until the voter dynamic, you know, is turned on its head until that quote blue state theory of yours like actually comes true and with the voter suppression and the gerrymandering, there's no pressure for anyone to act. And so maybe they were embarrassed by that documentary, but as we know, shame does not impact MAGA action. Mark Hayes (22:00.033) Until there's change. Mark Hayes (22:07.181) Yeah. Mark Hayes (22:12.429) Right. Mark Hayes (22:16.961) However. Mark Hayes (22:24.236) No. At all. At all. All right, bro, give me a quick hit. Brock Ganeles (22:29.786) the other thing I got going through the South is start to listen to like the news stations, right? Just to see what are they talking about down here. And my favorite one today is like for some reason the local newscaster comes on and goes like, and hey, the the data center that just that is just opened here in snowheresville, Mississippi. we got a report that several senior Amazon executives have come out and said Mark Hayes (22:36.558) Yeah. Brock Ganeles (22:59.751) That due to the new technologies, this data center is not gonna have any impact on the what water resources in the neighborhood. On to the next story. And I'm like, my God, this is like a classic case of where media controls the message that somehow the business one percenters, this was probably maybe a Sinclair-owned station, right? A right-wing station, and that's how they're reflecting the news. Because you know it was a controversy. You know the people are pissed about the data center and probably showing that dirty water like AOC showed in her congressional hearing, and it Mark Hayes (23:31.501) Wait. Mark Hayes (23:40.013) Yeah. Brock Ganeles (23:41.059) It's being the news, right? The media is trying to squash the controversy. So their entire reporting on the story was the commentary from a couple executives at Amazon Web Services who paid for and owned. Yeah. Just trust us. You know what? Everybody's gonna be fine. No story here. And that's how the story is reported. And I just found it amazing. Like that was like property in action. Mark Hayes (23:47.926) Right. Mark Hayes (23:54.702) I'm an Amazon. You can trust them. Mark Hayes (24:02.102) Right. Right. Mark Hayes (24:06.517) Yeah. That third year. Yeah. That third ear and third nostril has nothing to do with the environmental conditions near your house. You're fine, your water's fine, people. You know, boil it a little bit. You'll be fine. I mean it's it's it's you know, and and and and the thing about journalism, Brock, when I was a Cub reporter just starting out, you know, your boss would always ask you, Did you get both sides? we clearly didn't get both sides of that story. Right clearly. Brock Ganeles (24:36.54) Absolutely not. Absolutely not. No, everything everything's fine. Drink it drink it up. Guzzle it. Hey kids, guzzle it. Get that that water fountain. Mark Hayes (24:40.268) You know Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, this this public service message brought to you by the good folks at Amazon. Unbelievable. Hey, speaking of race and Hollywood, which we are now, Idris Elba did an interview with British GQ last week. Says it's not gonna fly him as the black James Bond. He can't beat 007. It's not gonna work. He said there's a portion of the audience out there that just ain't gonna go for it. Brock Ganeles (25:08.432) Non, okay. Mark Hayes (25:17.782) He said it was never legit, it was always a rumor. but he always believed that it was not realistic. You know? So I think the rumor just came about, just somebody floated it somewhere because they wanted to see probably how people reacted because he's such an amazing actor and he can do just about anything. and somebody probably said, What about Idris Helpa as double O? He might be double eight. Brock Ganeles (25:39.452) Mm-hmm. Mark Hayes (25:48.301) You know, but he ain't gonna be double seven. You know? Maybe they'll put him in as a villain. Cause he looks at the part. He ain't gonna be double seven though. Brock Ganeles (25:57.766) As you As you're saying that I was kinda thinking it was almost like a Hollywood version of the Rooney rule, where they floated out there pretending like black people had a real chance at the job, and it was just a fair auction, and we just happened to hire all white coaches in the NFL, but it was fair because we had this Rooney rule and we interviewed and we just couldn't find a candidate that quite fit quite as good as a Schottenheimer getting his fifth job, even though Don Schuma's third cousin's, you know, fourth kid. Mark Hayes (26:03.33) yeah. Like it matters. Mark Hayes (26:19.148) Yeah. Mark Hayes (26:24.822) Anyway. Yeah. Well Yeah. Brock Ganeles (26:29.138) Right. So Idris he had the look, he had the shot at it, but just wasn't quite the right fit. Maybe a little too tall. Might have been little too tall for James Bond. The second thing I was thinking of, what was the what was the mermaid movie a few years ago, the Disney movie that had the black? Mark Hayes (26:36.534) Yeah. Yeah, we got a couple of we got Mark Hayes (26:46.27) but it drove people crazy. Yes. Brock Ganeles (26:48.25) Yeah yeah. Because like 'cause there was a black mermaid and mermaids mermaids can't be black even though it's a made up figure. Like Shrek's allowed to be green. Shrek's allowed to be green, but the mermaid wasn't allowed to be black and they went nuts they went nuts over that. Mark Hayes (26:51.298) Like Mermaid. Mark Hayes (26:56.3) Right. It's a fictional character. With Mermay. No way. Well it's it's just like Eddie Murphy. You know, he's not an N word. He's Eddie Murphy. Remember the f the skid he did? Yeah, it's Eddie Murphy.
