- 0:09Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the Book
- 0:12Speaker 1: of Exodus with chapter twenty nine. Welcome to the Bible
- 0:23Speaker 1: Study Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. Chapter twenty nine
- 0:26Speaker 1: has to do with the consecration of the priests. But
- 0:30Speaker 1: first a word from this sponsor. Chapter twenty nine. Consecration
- 0:35Speaker 1: of the priests. And when we say consecration, that means
- 0:38Speaker 1: to dedicate something or someone to God. And it goes
- 0:43Speaker 1: like this, this is what you are to do to
- 0:45Speaker 1: consecrate them so that they may serve me as priests.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Take a young bowl in two rams without defect, and
- 0:51Speaker 1: from the finest wheat flour, make round loaves without yeast,
- 0:56Speaker 1: thick loaves without yeast and with olive oil mixed in,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and thin loaves without yeast and brushed with olive oil.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Put them in a basket and present them along with
- 1:06Speaker 1: a bull and the two rams. Then bring Arin and
- 1:09Speaker 1: his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting
- 1:11Speaker 1: and wash them with water. Take the garments and dress
- 1:14Speaker 1: erin with the tunic, the robe of the ephod, the
- 1:17Speaker 1: ephod itself, and the breastpiece fasten the epod on him
- 1:21Speaker 1: by its skillful woven wasistband. Put the turbine on his
- 1:24Speaker 1: head and attach the sacred emblem to the turbine. Take
- 1:27Speaker 1: the anointing oil and anoint him by pouring it on
- 1:30Speaker 1: his head. Bring his sons and dress them in tunics
- 1:33Speaker 1: and fasten caps on them. Then tie sashes on Erin
- 1:37Speaker 1: and his sons. The priesthood is theirs by a lasting ordinance.
- 1:43Speaker 1: So we're going to dress them in the clothes that
- 1:46Speaker 1: we talked about last week, preparing them, especially the erin
- 1:50Speaker 1: the high priest garment with the ephod and the breastpiece
- 1:52Speaker 1: and the orm and the thunum and the turban and
- 1:56Speaker 1: all of those things. We're going to anoint them with oil,
- 1:59Speaker 1: which used for priests and also for kings. It was
- 2:02Speaker 1: a very traditional thing when we anoint people with oil
- 2:06Speaker 1: during their baptism. It's going back to that sort of anointing.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And then we're to bring sacrifices, both sacrifices of bread
- 2:17Speaker 1: then this is flat bread, so it's bread made without yeast,
- 2:20Speaker 1: as well as two sacrifices, a young bull and two rams.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Then you shall ordain Aaron and his sons. Bring the
- 2:28Speaker 1: bull to the front of the tent of meeting, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: Aaron and his son shall lay their hands on its head,
- 2:33Speaker 1: slaughter it in the lord's presence at the entrance to
- 2:36Speaker 1: the tent of meeting. Take some of the bull's blood
- 2:39Speaker 1: and put it on the horns of the altar with
- 2:41Speaker 1: your finger, and pour out the rest of it at
- 2:43Speaker 1: the base of the altar. Then take all the fat
- 2:46Speaker 1: on the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and both kidneys with the fat on them, and burn
- 2:52Speaker 1: them on the altar. But burn the bull's flesh and
- 2:56Speaker 1: its hide in its intestines outside the camp. It is
- 3:00Speaker 1: a sin offering. Take one of the rams, and Aaron
- 3:03Speaker 1: and his sons shall lay their hands on its head slaughtered,
- 3:06Speaker 1: and take the blood and splash it against the sides
- 3:10Speaker 1: of the altar. Cut the ram into pieces, and wash
- 3:13Speaker 1: the internal organs and the legs, putting them with the
- 3:15Speaker 1: head and the other pieces. Then burn the entire ram
- 3:18Speaker 1: on the altar. It is a burnt offering to the Lord,
- 3:20Speaker 1: a pleasing aroma of food offering presented to the Lord.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Take the other ram, and Erin and his son shall
- 3:27Speaker 1: lay their hands on its head slaughtered, and take some
- 3:30Speaker 1: of its blood and put it on the lobes of
- 3:32Speaker 1: the right ears of Erin and his sons, on the
- 3:35Speaker 1: thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes
- 3:38Speaker 1: of their right feet. Then splash blood against the sides
- 3:41Speaker 1: of the altar, and take some blood from the altar
- 3:44Speaker 1: and some from the anointing oil and sprinkle it on
- 3:47Speaker 1: Aarin in his garments and on his sons and their garments.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Then he and his sons and their garments will be consecrated.
- 3:56Speaker 1: So we've got some sacrifices going on, and there are
- 3:59Speaker 1: different types of sacrifices. We're actually going to get into
- 4:02Speaker 1: this later on when we get into the Book of Leviticus.
- 4:05Speaker 1: We're going to go through in details what the different
- 4:08Speaker 1: sacrifices are. But in this case they're bringing the bull,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and the bull is going to be a sin offering,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and so it's going to be to cleanse them from sin.
- 4:19Speaker 1: And in the Bible in general, this idea of the
- 4:25Speaker 1: wages of sin or death and the way that sin
- 4:28Speaker 1: needs sacrifice, at first this imperfect sacrifice of the blood
- 4:33Speaker 1: of bulls and of lambs, and then later on in
- 4:36Speaker 1: the New Testament, the perfect sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
- 4:40Speaker 1: This whole thing of being covered in blood is still
- 4:44Speaker 1: a phrase that we use in church, except that we
- 4:48Speaker 1: talk about being covered by the blood of Christ so
- 4:50Speaker 1: that it covers over our sin. This is a foreshadowing
- 4:54Speaker 1: of that that the blood of the bulls would cover
- 4:58Speaker 1: over their sins as they come before. And then we
- 5:00Speaker 1: also are sacrificing these two rams very specific instructions what
- 5:05Speaker 1: to do with all the organs and what you do
- 5:07Speaker 1: with the liver and the kidney and the fat on them,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and you're burning them. And I don't know why we're
- 5:14Speaker 1: putting blood on just the thumb and the big toe
- 5:18Speaker 1: and such, but it's the way they were instructed to
- 5:22Speaker 1: do it. That's really all we can say for this.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Why that particular big toe and why your particular thumbs,
- 5:29Speaker 1: I cannot tell you, And why we're putting it on
- 5:32Speaker 1: the right ear. At least we're not like covering them
- 5:35Speaker 1: in blood, but we're still doing this symbolic nature of
- 5:39Speaker 1: this blood of the sacrifice is somehow cleansing them. And
- 5:44Speaker 1: then also this anointing oil and we're sprinking in it
- 5:47Speaker 1: not only on them but on their garments, which is
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know, I can see some of you are worried
- 5:52Speaker 1: about how you're going to get that out in the laundry.
- 5:54Speaker 1: But this whole part of this consecrating, the setting them
- 5:57Speaker 1: aside for this special role of priest, and the role
- 6:02Speaker 1: of priest here, especially here in the Old Testament, is
- 6:05Speaker 1: going to be the one who is interceding on behalf
- 6:09Speaker 1: of the people now, especially as someone who is coming
- 6:13Speaker 1: from a priesthood of all believers. Understanding that the New
- 6:16Speaker 1: Testament talks about the New Testament really talks about only
- 6:21Speaker 1: one priest, and that is Jesus. That we don't need
- 6:25Speaker 1: anybody else to come between us and God anymore. As
- 6:29Speaker 1: of Jesus sacrifice. You won't see anyone else in the
- 6:32Speaker 1: New Testament who is Christian, not talking about the Jewish
- 6:38Speaker 1: high priest, but you won't see anybody else in the
- 6:41Speaker 1: church called a priest. You'll see pastors and elders and
- 6:46Speaker 1: deacons and even bishops, but you won't see someone called
- 6:51Speaker 1: a priest. There isn't that role of someone who has
- 6:53Speaker 1: to come between us and God. That someone is now Jesus.
- 6:58Speaker 1: But this is a very important role here. These people
- 7:01Speaker 1: who are going to be the only ones who will
- 7:04Speaker 1: be doing this sacrifice for the people. The high priest
- 7:07Speaker 1: the only one who will go into the holiest of holies,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and so we're getting them ready for that. Take from
- 7:13Speaker 1: this rama the fat tail, the fat on the internal organs,
- 7:16Speaker 1: the long lobe of delivered both kidneys and the fat
- 7:19Speaker 1: on them, and the right thigh. This is the ram
- 7:22Speaker 1: for ordination. From the basket of bread made without yeast,
- 7:27Speaker 1: which is before the Lord. Take one round loaf, one
- 7:29Speaker 1: thick loaf with olive oil mixed in, and one thin loaf.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Put all these in the hands of Aaron and his
- 7:35Speaker 1: sons and have them wave them before the Lord as
- 7:38Speaker 1: a wave offering. Then take them from their hands and
- 7:41Speaker 1: burn them on the altar, along with the burnt offering
- 7:44Speaker 1: for a pleasing aroma to the Lord, a food offering
- 7:47Speaker 1: presented to the Lord. After you take the bread of
- 7:50Speaker 1: the ram for Aaron's ordination, wave it before the Lord
- 7:54Speaker 1: as a wave offering. It will be your share, your share,
- 7:59Speaker 1: meaning that this is something that the priests would eat.
- 8:02Speaker 1: The priest would actually eat some of the offerings that
- 8:06Speaker 1: are brought as part of their I want to say
- 8:10Speaker 1: payment for service. I don't know if that's the right
- 8:12Speaker 1: term here. Consecrate those parts of the ordination Ram that
- 8:15Speaker 1: belong to Erin and his sons, the beast, the breast
- 8:18Speaker 1: that was waved, and the thigh that was presented. This
- 8:21Speaker 1: is to be the perpetual share from the Israelites for
- 8:24Speaker 1: Aaron and his sons. It is the contribution the Israelites
- 8:27Speaker 1: are to make to the Lord from their fellowship offerings.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Erin's sacred garments will belong to his descendants, so that
- 8:34Speaker 1: they can be anointed and ordained in them. The son
- 8:37Speaker 1: who succeeds him as priest and comes to the Tent
- 8:41Speaker 1: of Meaning to minister in the holy places, to wear
- 8:44Speaker 1: them seven days, take the ram for the ordination and
- 8:47Speaker 1: cook the meat in a sacred place at the entrance
- 8:50Speaker 1: to the tent of meeting. Erin and his sons are
- 8:52Speaker 1: to eat the meat of the ram and the bread
- 8:54Speaker 1: that is in the basket. They are to eat these
- 8:56Speaker 1: offerings by which atonement was made for their orders, nation
- 9:00Speaker 1: and consecration. But no one else may eat them because
- 9:04Speaker 1: they are sacred. And if any of the meat of
- 9:06Speaker 1: the ordination ram or any bread is left over till
- 9:10Speaker 1: morning burn it up, must not be eaten because it
- 9:13Speaker 1: is sacred, so consecrated. They're set aside ordained. They are
- 9:19Speaker 1: affirmed by the people of God to be in this role.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Similar while we would ordains pastors these days, or priests
- 9:28Speaker 1: if you're coming from an Orthodox or Catholic tradition, and
- 9:32Speaker 1: then atonement. Atonement is that price that we pay for
- 9:35Speaker 1: scent to make things right again. And so if I
- 9:38Speaker 1: do something that is to harm you, an atonement would
- 9:43Speaker 1: be to make it right again. If I stole from you,
- 9:47Speaker 1: to pay what I sole plus more would be atonement.
- 9:51Speaker 1: So to make it right again, do for Aaron and
- 9:54Speaker 1: his sons everything I have commanded. You take seven days
- 9:57Speaker 1: to ordain them. Sacrifice a bull each day as a
- 10:00Speaker 1: offering to make atonement. Purify the altar by making atonement
- 10:04Speaker 1: for it and anoint it to consecrate it. For seven days,
- 10:07Speaker 1: make atonement for the altar and consecrate it. Then the
- 10:10Speaker 1: altar will be most holy. In whatever touches it will
- 10:13Speaker 1: be holy. And when we say holy, it means set
- 10:16Speaker 1: apart for God's use. We sometimes think holy means somebody
- 10:22Speaker 1: who is perfect, for instance, and that would be odd.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Then why would an altar be holy? But an altar
- 10:29Speaker 1: is something that is dedicated to God's use. And when
- 10:31Speaker 1: we talk about us being called to be a holy people,
- 10:35Speaker 1: we are also saying that we are to be set
- 10:38Speaker 1: aside for God's use. This is what you were to
- 10:42Speaker 1: offer on the altar regularly each day to lambs a
- 10:45Speaker 1: year old offer, one in the morning and the other
- 10:48Speaker 1: at twilight. With the first lamb offer a tenth of
- 10:51Speaker 1: any thought of the finest flower, with a mix of
- 10:53Speaker 1: hin of oil from pressed olives and a quarter of
- 10:57Speaker 1: a hin of wine as a drink offering prific the
- 11:00Speaker 1: other lamb at twilight with the same grain offering and
- 11:03Speaker 1: its drink offering as in the morning, a pleasing aroma
- 11:06Speaker 1: of food offering presented to the Lord for the generations
- 11:10Speaker 1: to come. This burnt offering is to be made regularly
- 11:12Speaker 1: at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the Lord.
- 11:15Speaker 1: There I will meet you and speak to you. And
- 11:17Speaker 1: there also I will meet with the Israelites, and the
- 11:21Speaker 1: place will be consecrated by my glory. So I will
- 11:24Speaker 1: consecrate the tent of Meeting, and the altar will consecrate
- 11:28Speaker 1: Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests. Then
- 11:31Speaker 1: I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God.
- 11:34Speaker 1: They will know that I am the Lord their God,
- 11:36Speaker 1: who brought them out of Egypt so that I might
- 11:38Speaker 1: dwell among them. I am the Lord their God. So
- 11:42Speaker 1: this is the beginning of this role of priesthood that
- 11:46Speaker 1: continues on for many generations. If you're Jewish, this role
- 11:51Speaker 1: of priesthood really stops with the second destruction of the Temple,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and we don't really see priests after that point, and
- 11:57Speaker 1: we don't really see the same sort of regular sacrificing
- 12:02Speaker 1: of animals that happened until that point. If you're Christian,
- 12:07Speaker 1: it ends with the Cross. It ends with that perfect
- 12:10Speaker 1: sacrifice of Jesus, who is both high priest and sacrificial lamb,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and that nothing else at that point is needed beyond
- 12:20Speaker 1: that one perfect sacrifice. And with that we're going to
- 12:24Speaker 1: end this episode of the Bible Study Podcast. If you
