- 0:01Speaker 1: Eight forty eight thirteen ten Wyba and Madison in the morning.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Oh yes, thinking about the beautiful ballpark and one of
- 0:11Speaker 1: the really cool things about Warner Park. And since the
- 0:14Speaker 1: Mallards have been in town for a very very long time,
- 0:18Speaker 1: there's never a dull time. There's never a downtime on
- 0:21Speaker 1: Madison's North side as a matter of fact, coming up
- 0:23Speaker 1: this weekend tomorrow, as a matter of fact, at the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Warner Park Duck Pond got the True North Festival, music, food,
- 0:32Speaker 1: all sorts of great stuff. That's tomorrow at the Warner
- 0:37Speaker 1: Park right at the Duck Pond there and joining us
- 0:40Speaker 1: with the Madison Mallard mister Vernstenman, Vern, how you.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Been man, Good morning, doing great.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Let's talk about this True North Fest a little bit.
- 0:49Speaker 1: For folks that don't know, this is a chance to
- 0:52Speaker 1: head on out to the ballpark and do a couple
- 0:55Speaker 1: of our favorite things, which is eat, drink and listen
- 0:58Speaker 1: to music. Am I right on that?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Right on, right on? You know, there's there's been so
- 1:02Speaker 2: many cool things happening on the North side of Madison
- 1:05Speaker 2: in the last few years. You know, I've been working
- 1:08Speaker 2: on the side of town for twenty five years now
- 1:10Speaker 2: and you know, ten to fifteen years ago, I think
- 1:12Speaker 2: the North Side you know, had a lot of opportunity
- 1:15Speaker 2: to improve, I guess right, And and and you didn't
- 1:19Speaker 2: see new restaurants and new bars and things like that
- 1:21Speaker 2: coming to this part of town. And now you know,
- 1:24Speaker 2: some of the coolest you know, new bars and restaurants
- 1:27Speaker 2: and apartments and things like that are all coming to
- 1:31Speaker 2: the North Side. You know, there's a big turnover, and
- 1:34Speaker 2: kind of even the people living in the houses here,
- 1:36Speaker 2: you know, like people you know, rebuilding and improving the
- 1:41Speaker 2: houses that are here. It's becoming kind of a younger,
- 1:43Speaker 2: cooler part of town than I think it's ever been
- 1:45Speaker 2: since I've been here, at least, And so we wanted
- 1:47Speaker 2: to celebrate that. So I got together with Matt Grding
- 1:50Speaker 2: from Lola's. You know, this outstanding cocktail bar on the
- 1:53Speaker 2: north side of Madison. If you haven't been to it yet,
- 1:56Speaker 2: you got to stop in. It's got kind of a
- 1:57Speaker 2: great stuffer club and you know, soul club vibe going
- 2:01Speaker 2: on with outstanding music and food and things like that.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And we got together and said, what can we do
- 2:06Speaker 2: to celebrate all the great things happening on the north
- 2:09Speaker 2: side of Madison? And tell the story a little bit.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And so we landed on the True North Food and
- 2:13Speaker 2: Music Festival. That will be the first ever one will
- 2:16Speaker 2: be tomorrow, Kates open at three o'clock. We have twelve
- 2:20Speaker 2: restaurants that we'll be selling you know, kind of small
- 2:23Speaker 2: plate samples, but also some entree dishes as well, places
- 2:27Speaker 2: like Lola's and Heritage Cavern in a Han and Seven
- 2:31Speaker 2: Acre Dairy, Salvator's Pizza, and it's going to be outstanding,
- 2:37Speaker 2: you know. I mean, the food alone would be worth
- 2:40Speaker 2: coming for, but we're also adding, you know, great music.
- 2:44Speaker 2: We'll have Kates opening at three, live music starting at
- 2:47Speaker 2: four o'clock with local bands kind of headlined. The local
- 2:53Speaker 2: band portion at least is headlined by the People Brother's band,
- 2:56Speaker 2: Mom and Dick Donald's Brass Band. And then we're bringing
- 2:59Speaker 2: in this guy by the name of Pochi Lfarge. If
- 3:01Speaker 2: you ever happened to see Boardwalk Empire, he was actually
- 3:04Speaker 2: in Boardwalk Empire and had some of his music featured
- 3:06Speaker 2: in that show, and he kind of evokes this kind
- 3:09Speaker 2: of like speakeasy vibe from like the twenties and thirties,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and he's outstanding and he'll be a lot of fun
- 3:16Speaker 2: to see as our headliner on Saturday.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Night should be a whole lot of fun. Of course,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you head on over to True Northfest dot com. That's
- 3:23Speaker 1: True Northfest dot com all one word by tickets online.
- 3:27Speaker 1: You can also get a rundown of the different music
- 3:30Speaker 1: and different foods available. I know I'm biased. I do
- 3:33Speaker 1: see beef butter barbecue there. I also see you guys
- 3:37Speaker 1: got a fantastic about him. And it's interesting too when
- 3:40Speaker 1: you talk about the North Side, and I know one
- 3:42Speaker 1: of the things that the Mallards have always prided themselves on,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and what you guys have always talked about was how
- 3:49Speaker 1: much you are committed not just to Madison but even
- 3:52Speaker 1: specifically to the community. And it seems like a lot
- 3:54Speaker 1: of the changes that have gone on for the better
- 3:57Speaker 1: on the North Side really do and and Vern, I
- 4:00Speaker 1: think you guys deserve a lot of credit for this.
- 4:03Speaker 1: It really does does base itself around Warner Park and
- 4:07Speaker 1: what you guys have been doing with the Mallards, you've
- 4:08Speaker 1: suddenly and as well as the Nightmares is that was
- 4:11Speaker 1: an area that you know, a lot of other other
- 4:15Speaker 1: organizations that tried to make something happen. You guys worked
- 4:18Speaker 1: really really hard to make it happen at Warner Park,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and it's become a place where, you know, not only
- 4:24Speaker 1: is it is it a great event the baseball and
- 4:26Speaker 1: softball games, there's a lot of people that are now
- 4:29Speaker 1: coming that way. And if you're if you're looking to
- 4:31Speaker 1: start a new business, if you're looking to open up
- 4:34Speaker 1: a restaurant or a bar, or any other type of
- 4:37Speaker 1: type of thing, you've got these this influx of people.
- 4:40Speaker 1: On any baseball or softball day, You've suddenly got an
- 4:44Speaker 1: influx of customers. And it's kind of like a little
- 4:46Speaker 1: engine that once you guys fired that up, it's really
- 4:49Speaker 1: been taking off up there. I know you're very proud
- 4:52Speaker 1: of the neighborhood, as you guys should be. It's pretty
- 4:54Speaker 1: cool what's going on the North Side.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Absolutely, and I mean, how nice is it if you
- 4:59Speaker 2: live on the North Side you could hop on your
- 5:02Speaker 2: bike or walk over to a Mallard's game or to
- 5:05Speaker 2: a Nightmares game. And now adding in some of these
- 5:07Speaker 2: kind of community events and festivals. We're going to be
- 5:09Speaker 2: doing a trick or treat event with a screening of
- 5:12Speaker 2: a movie before Halloween here in a couple of weeks.
- 5:15Speaker 2: And yeah, I think that we've always kind of felt
- 5:19Speaker 2: like if we're making Madison a little bit better place
- 5:22Speaker 2: to live, like we're doing our job and that the
- 5:24Speaker 2: business side we'll kind of figure itself out, and that,
- 5:27Speaker 2: you know, is what we've always tried to do with
- 5:28Speaker 2: the Mallards, and I think what we're doing now is
- 5:30Speaker 2: true North and some of these other things. Another funny
- 5:33Speaker 2: event we have coming up in a couple of weeks
- 5:35Speaker 2: is we're returning Division one baseball to Madison for the
- 5:39Speaker 2: first time since nineteen ninety three and the University of
- 5:43Speaker 2: Wisconsin Milwaukee we'll be playing a baseball game here against
- 5:49Speaker 2: Illinois State, and it will be the first time we'll
- 5:52Speaker 2: have Division one baseball here since the UW you know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: baseball program left unfortunately. And that'll be on October eleventh,
- 6:00Speaker 2: on a Saturday afternoon. And for those that are big
- 6:03Speaker 2: baseball fans, that'll be a funny event to see and uh,
- 6:06Speaker 2: you know, kind of bring bring to you one baseball
- 6:08Speaker 2: back here to Madison and kind of bring that topic
- 6:10Speaker 2: back up for conversation is always a fun thing for
- 6:12Speaker 2: us as well.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Will you're will your announcer be saying, and the University
- 6:16Speaker 1: of Wisconsin Milwaukee team takes the fan.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I wanted to. I wanted to buy UW Milwaukee like
- 6:25Speaker 2: some nice red uniform conson on the front of them,
- 6:28Speaker 2: but they're they're athletic. Director didn't think that was as
- 6:30Speaker 2: good of an idea as I did.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Different perspectives, But that is who how did that come
- 6:38Speaker 1: to be? Like? Because to me, that's it's brilliant all around.
- 6:42Speaker 1: It's it's so good. Obviously for Madison, it's also great.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I got a guess for the players of from UW Milwaukee,
- 6:49Speaker 1: how did that all come about? Burn?
- 6:51Speaker 2: You know, I've been friends with those coaches for a
- 6:54Speaker 2: long time. Actually, the coach at e W Milwaukee, Sean Wagner,
- 6:57Speaker 2: played for the Mallards in the late two thousands, and
- 7:01Speaker 2: you know, fall baseball has become a bigger and bigger
- 7:03Speaker 2: thing in college baseball in the last five or ten years,
- 7:06Speaker 2: I would say, and they saw this as an opportunity
- 7:09Speaker 2: to do something kind of fun for their players where
- 7:11Speaker 2: they get away from the normal grind of campus life
- 7:14Speaker 2: and all the things that they're doing. And I think
- 7:17Speaker 2: they see the Mallards as kind of a fun place
- 7:19Speaker 2: to come to. I think the teams are going to
- 7:21Speaker 2: go up to the dells after the game and get
- 7:23Speaker 2: the water parks and things like that. So I think
- 7:26Speaker 2: it's a fun thing for them. It's a fun thing
- 7:28Speaker 2: for us and for Madison Baseball you know fans. So
- 7:31Speaker 2: I think it's kind of a win win for everybody.
- 7:33Speaker 1: That is an amazing thing that's gonna be going on
- 7:35Speaker 1: October eleventh. Of course, details, I'm gonna guess Mallards Baseball
- 7:39Speaker 1: dot com you guys have probably got all the details
- 7:42Speaker 1: on that up there and True North True Northfest dot com.

- 8:17Speaker 2: you know, I think it's going to be mostly adulty event.
- 8:20Speaker 2: But it's absolutely something that we kind of built to
