- 0:00Human beings have struggled in their attempts to make changes
- 0:04to human nature. Throughout human history, many
- 0:08approaches have been tried, including adopting tough
- 0:11disciplines, isolating oneself from society to avoid the
- 0:16impulses and temptations, as well as harsh tortures to which
- 0:21the body has been subjected to try to whip it into shape, so to
- 0:25speak. Experience shows us, however,
- 0:29that these methods of forcible control or suppression of human
- 0:33nature simply do not succeed in the long term, and they have an
- 0:38additional drawback in that they require a tremendous amount of
- 0:42attention and effort to effectuate them at all.
- 0:47These methods are based in the idea that the individual has
- 0:50control over his own life and actions and can therefore attain
- 0:54this mastery by his own efforts. When we look at the development
- 0:59of human attributes of body, life and mind, including
- 1:03instincts, habits and embedded modes of action, it is clear
- 1:08that these things developed over hundreds of thousands of years,
- 1:13with many of them going back even further to the pre human
- 1:16evolutionary action that goes back many millions of years.
- 1:21The evolutionary process is therefore bigger and more
- 1:24encompassing than any individual human being can comprehend, much
- 1:30less gain mastery over. When the seeker shifts his focus
- 1:35from the ego standpoint to the divine standpoint, he is able to
- 1:39see that the evolutionary changes are a general change
- 1:42that needs to take place within a broader context.
- 1:47This is not something that any individual can do on his own.
- 1:51The solution then is to use the focus and energy that otherwise
- 1:55is spent trying to control the lower nature through
- 1:58suppression, to tune the awareness to the psychic being
- 2:03and the spiritual consciousness, and create a field of
- 2:07receptivity for the knowledge and power of that higher
- 2:10evolutionary force to work within and through him.
- 2:14This involves not simply creation of an intellectual
- 2:18knowledge, but also an opening of the heart and the vital being
- 2:23to the divine, Sri Orbindo observes quote.
- 2:28To do anything by mental control is always difficult when what is
- 2:32attempted runs contrary to the trend of human nature or of the
- 2:37personal nature. A strong will patiently and
- 2:40perseveringly turned towards its object can affect a change, but
- 2:45usually it takes a long time, and the success at the beginning
- 2:49may be only partial and checkered by many failures.
- 2:53To turn all actions automatically into worship
- 2:56cannot be done by thought control only.
- 2:59There must be a strong aspiration in the heart which
- 3:03will bring about some realization or feeling of the
- 3:06presence of the one to whom worship is offered.
- 3:11The buckta does not rely on his own effort alone, but on the
- 3:15grace and power of the Divine whom he adores.
