• 0:00
[upbeat rock music] Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and good night.
• 0:18
Oh, no, wait. [laughs] That, that happens much later in the show. [laughs] It's, uh, it's full spectrum cycling all, all over here, uh, all over by you, all over in your ear hole. Show number 103. Laser 103.
• 0:33
Or, as I like to call it, the third one since we were supposed to have been at the other's place. [laughs] [laughs] We're getting there. We're getting there. Hey. Baby steps.
• 0:41
Well, all of, like- It's like BC and AD kind of- Right, right... you know? There, yeah, there you go... or, uh, before the Battle of Yavin and after the Battle of Yavin, for our Star Wars listeners. [laughs] Multiple.
• 0:53
I know you're out there, for we are many, we are legion. Uh, right now you got, uh- Now you're crossing. Now you're crossing over. [laughs] Well, introduce you to the panel. It's, uh, it's JK to my right. Hello. Hello.
• 1:05
Uh, Mr. Tony Berger, in his usually s- usually, usually spot over there across from me. [laughs] And splitting the uprights there, Mr. John Trusky. Hey, folks.
• 1:13
And [laughs] I hate to do this right off the bat, but- Welcome caller... welcome to the program caller. Who do we have on the line? Uh, Dave Luns. [laughs] Dave. Daveluns.com. [sighs] What's up, Dave?
• 1:27
Chuck Willie's sitting next to me. Are you, uh, are you out riding? Wait, what? No. Chuck Willie's sitting next to you? We're sitting in my backyard drinking beer and burning stuff. Well, there you go.
• 1:39
That's what Chuck Willie's good at. Yeah. Are you good at that, too? Uh, yeah. So- Yeah, just got done, uh, welding Justin Timberline up, and, uh, figure starting ramping up a notch, so here we are.
• 1:53
Is, uh, Justin Timberline gonna be ready for his birthday? I think so, yeah. Mm. If my weld holds, should be fine. [laughs] Are, are we making- That's the plan... so, so we saw that you put a- That's the plan...
• 2:08
we saw you put a McBob's- Making progress... uh, post up for, for tomorrow, Saturday the 13th. Yeah, well, Bill, uh, um- Mm-hmm... yeah, Bill was inquiring. I'm like, "I don't know.
• 2:20
I didn't really think about it," you know? I was like, "Well, actually, I did think about it." I'm like, "Eh, I don't know," but- You put the Ramsey picture up. That, like, that- Just kind of gauging interest.
• 2:29
[laughs] Upon putting the Ramsey picture up, it denotes that it is going to be a ride, so. I could do that. [laughs] I forgot. I was like, "What the hell?
• 2:37
I totally forgot that I had to go back a day later and put that up." [laughs] I, I, I could do that. Little McBob's on Saturday? Uh, so yeah. Maybe. It, it should be out.
• 2:50
So all I gotta do is, like, regrease the headset, 'cause I cooked all the grease out when I was welding it, um, or brazing it, um, and then finish reassembling. Or just take a piece and zip tie it to whatever bike.
• 3:04
[laughs] It's like, Justin's along. Or, or I could ride one of my other eight bikes, I guess. I don't know. Well, it's your call. It's his birthday, so. Yeah. What are you doing, Chad, Saturday? Uh, I got the kiddos.
• 3:21
Oh, Chad's got the kiddos. Right on. What, they're afraid of McBob's? I, I say that every time. [laughs] He never knows.
• 3:29
It, it's one thing I miss about, uh, Chad's dad owning this building is his, him coming by and saying, "How you doing, kiddo?" [laughs] Kiddo. [laughs] That's where we got it from. [laughs] Right on. Nice. Yeah. Um,
• 3:47
but yeah, I don't know. Whatever, keep in touch. Um, but, uh, maybe we should ride. Uh- Mike will be riding... well, somebody'll be riding. [laughs] Maybe. Somebody will be riding on this bike ride. One day.
• 3:59
[laughs] Yeah. Bike. Maybe. Yeah, you can just throw your bike in the truck and we go to the next place. [laughs] Yeah. Oh, I'll never forget that one. Or, or- That one's gonna hang...
• 4:12
or, or you can just hop in a vehicle like I did the one year. Right, right, right. Yeah. And then when, uh, Mike Dekike almost blew a damn spring 'cause he thought- Right...
• 4:20
it was a beach ride, [laughs] and it ended up only being a ride from Highbury to George's, [laughs] which is, to the non-acquainted- Yeah, he's like, "See, like, we're-"... about a half mile, is that...
• 4:31
"Mike's watching bro." Nice. [laughs] We'll bike up. Yeah. All right, Dan. Well, uh, get back to your show and we'll talk about tomorrow tomorrow. Right on.
• 4:45
[laughs] Shoot, shoot for late- Um- Shoot for late morning, like 11:00 to noon or somewhere in there. Yeah. Right. Yeah, we, we, we have- Oh, sorry... a schedule here, too. All right. We'll see you tomorrow then. Bye.
• 4:57
Okay, bye. Bye, Dan. Bye. I don't know what it is with Dave's phone, but it always [mimics static] just doesn't work that well. Well- And, and it's a brand new, you know, the m- the new 12 Mini.
• 5:11
So I think it's operator error. Well, dogs and owners and, you know- [laughs]... take on... I don't know. Da- davelunds.com, ladies and gentlemen.
• 5:19
Things, things take on personalities of each other and da, da, da, da, da. Non-profit organization, but it didn't start out that way. So it, it was my mom's birthday a couple days ago. Oh, how old? 88. 88.
• 5:32
Well, it was actually on the day we recorded the show, which is- [laughs]... two days ago. [laughs] Happy birthday, Greg's mom. Yeah, I, I saw her Monday. She got her second COVID shot, so she's- Nice...
• 5:44
more like, "Oh, yeah, everybody can come over now." I'm like, "Well-" You can come over... not exactly. No. But it's getting there, so we're getting there. Close, close, close. I was- So-...
• 5:53
excited that my boss and I were in an enclosed office, and the CDC guidelines said that if both of you have had the, both shots in, in our case, and it's been more than two weeks, that you could be in a room without a mask on and-
• 6:08
I'm gonna fucking max. [laughs] I thought you were gonna say- Wow... so you could hug each other. No, we did not do any hugging. Okay. [laughs] 25% of us in this room have been vaccinated so far. Is that correct?
• 6:17
[laughs] Uh, I guess so. You could say that I was vaccinated 'cause I had it, so. Yeah. Oh, copy that. So f- 50%, give or take. Yes, I have, um, I've had for a long time now, actually. Yeah. Right on. Yeah.
• 6:30
Well- Over a month I have-- I was tested negative two days ago because I have to go on biweekly testing. And get the damn vaccination- Because-... as soon as it's available.
• 6:39
And I think if you look out, it's not that hard to get. I'm sorry. Well, I'm not gonna swirl around and be like- I'm not, that's not what this podcast is about, so let's not talk about it...
• 6:46
reh, reh, gimme, gimme, gimme So let's just move on. Reh. Moving on. Yeah. It was- Lots of cool electric bike stuff I saw. Yep. But I always see that. Um, what about that shot? No.
• 6:53
[laughs] It was, uh, International Women's Day on Monday. Yes, it was. It was very nice. But- WMUC did a great job Why do they only get one day? They don't. [laughs] That's what it says.
• 7:03
I mean, well they- It's Women's Day, not women's year or- Uh, no, I mean, I think it's just a consistent thing all the way around, whether, you know, it's, you know, uh, it- if you put it in an official standpoint, for sure, but I, I personally, I don't think so.
• 7:14
No, no, of course not. No, they rule the world. That would be way better if they did. They kinda do. [laughs] [laughs] Use that power, ladies. Just- Use that power... you know. Yeah, yeah.
• 7:28
They're clever with wheeling and such. They're, I, there's a bunch of gravel business in the notes I kinda noticed today. It's just- Really? I don't know if it's good to talk about gravel that much.
• 7:38
$355 shoes for gravel from Rapha. [laughs] Uh-oh, spit take almost over here. Well, to be fair, last week we talked about shoes- [laughs]... made specifically for e-biking, so. [laughs] Yeah. Well. Also silly. Mm-hmm.
• 7:51
Hey. You know, marketing is strong right now, especially now that, you know, with, with the advent of, like, the
• 8:02
proliferation of e-bikes on, like, Facebook and stuff, and these marketing gimmicks they all have. They're, it, it's just absolutely incredible how, like, one of them's self-cleaning.
• 8:17
Self- That's what they're advertising is their electric bike's like, you know, feature is that it's self-cleaning. Wouldn't you want a self-cleaning bike if you could get it? Well. [sighs] [laughs] I don't know.
• 8:29
[laughs] Given, given the amount of time that I do not clean, say, drivetrains- Ever... uh, no, no, no. That's, it's pretty much a, a monthly basis for, especially over the winter months for me, personally. Oh. But- I-
• 8:42
... I like my drivetrains, and I try not to have to replace them very often, so. Right. Yeah, it makes sense to kinda take care of your bike. That said, there's always one in the stable- Elfine...
• 8:51
that's just the one you're like [laughs] yeah. No, that was the furthest one back- That's, that's the Elfine... and I got tired.
• 8:56
[laughs] There's [laughs] Hey, you just happen to be the, uh, well, it's crappy outside- Yeah... so you're the crap show. I mean. [laughs] Yeah. Elfine 8 Speed [laughs] chain.
• 9:06
It's, you know, an $8 chain and [laughs] some pretty straight line teeth that don't really wear out that much, so I kinda like that. Get that Surly stainless steel chain ring up there- Right... and you're good to go.
• 9:18
Hey. Are you still looking for one? Uh, yeah. [laughs] Oh. [laughs] I, I, I might have had it in here and already sold it. I don't know. Ah. So I f- I forget. 42 tooth, 110, 130? I don't remember.
• 9:31
Uh, I'll have to double check. Yeah. It's, it's for the bike that's outside, so. Remind me, because I have been slacking- Grr... over the winter on stuff like that. I didn't wanna be a, I didn't wanna be that guy.
• 9:41
[laughs] Be that guy. I didn't wanna be that guy because, uh, we, I've alwa- I've worked w- I've worked around those guys, so- Yeah... like, I don't wanna be that person. No, that's no problem.
• 9:50
Hey, our buddy, uh, Steve-O Knievel's now a columnist, columnist at, uh, The Cycling Independent. Nice. It's a pretty cool website.
• 9:59
I think if I did a new site, I would go for that kinda retro newspaper look like they've got going. Pretty interesting site. Lots of good stuff, including Steve-O Knievel, who's doing- Maybe-...
• 10:09
I think, kind of a Dear Abby. No, it's more of a quest- Q&A column. It's not really a- Well, it-... advice column in the formal sense Will it be in the show notes? It'll be in the show notes.
• 10:16
You wouldn't believe- Everything's in the show notes... what happened to me when I was on my bicycle last night. There's probably stuff in the show notes we won't even talk about today. I don't know.
• 10:22
[laughs] Maybe you should always check out the show notes. Probably. Yeah. For even some notes that- To be honest, I think people are-... are not show...
• 10:28
people are using their podcatchers or their, um, you know, podcast Spotify or Apple, and a lot of people don't go to the site. Mm. From what I can gather.
• 10:38
Lots more people listen to the show than actually end up on the show notes page. Well- So go check that page out. You never know what might be on there. We can only paint the word picture so much- Right...
• 10:47
'cause it can't do the hyperlink verbally. We could, but man, would it's way more work. No, I'm not, I'm not reading off this, uh, this link for the- Page tips... the longest name for an e-bike. [laughs] Page tips
• 10:58
dot [laughs] I don't know. Moustache Friday 27 FS Speed Dual S Pedelec. That's the e-bike? That's an e-bike. I think that's the longest name I've seen for one- It could be... yet. What's the story with this? I know.
• 11:13
I thought you were talking about it- I don't know. It actually looks kinda cool... what it says there. It's expensive, but it's, uh, it, it- Yeah... kinda looks pretty cool. What it is, is a European speed bike. Oh.
• 11:23
Which means it can go 28 miles an hour. Oh. 'Cause most of them over there can't. Yep. Or don't or won't because of- Right... well, I don't know, rules. Rules. Well, yeah. You know. But it's a really long name.
• 11:35
That is a really long name. Kinda like Richard's a long name for Dick. Dick. [laughs] Anthony's a pretty long fucking name for Stoney. Stoney. Uh. [sighs] What, Tony? Tony.
• 11:48
Might have to put, might have to put Stoney on mute here because, uh, guess what, ladies and gentlemen? We got another call. Uh, welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? Hi.
• 12:00
I was wondering if y'all knew how to fix a hand brake. On your trike? That sounds like a hand job On my tricycle because it doesn't fucking stop for shit right now. Oh, it sounds like Big Sexy, ladies and gentlemen.
• 12:19
Hey. Yeah, it's me. I'm sorry. Um, uh, man, I'm in the swamp desert. I'm almost out of it. I'm almost to the East Coast and heading up that beautiful East Coast, St.
• 12:32
Augustine, Fernandina Beach, Savannah, Myrtle Beach. Oh, my God, I can't wait. But man, you gotta go through some swamp desert to get to that fucking shit. [laughs] Oh, no. I, I, I forgot.
• 12:48
I forgot, like, when, when, when I left my mom's house, um, she lives north of Tampa. When I left my mom's house, I forgot how much swamp desert I went through. Like, 50 or 60 miles between gas stations and shit. It...
• 13:06
My God, it's... A- and, and I'll tell you what, Google Maps can kiss my goddamn ass right now. [laughs] Ma'am, kiss my grits. [laughs] So what's going- All- What's going on with your, um- All Google Maps wants me to do,
• 13:23
all Google Maps wants me to do is get shot for trespassing, 'cause- [laughs]... literally any alternate route besides... It, it, it just, it brings me to, "No trespassing. You will be shot."
• 13:37
[laughs] I'm like, "Oh, great. So now I gotta go 26 miles back this way." Oh, shit. Damn, dude. That's, uh- Anyways. Yeah, it's s- But I'm almost, I'm almost out of it. I'm gonna hit the A1A,
• 13:53
the A1A all the way up the Atlantic Coast, and then I'll be in Georgia, and I... You don't even wanna know what I think about Georgia, so. [laughs] Georgia. So tell us about Heather's, uh, malady.
• 14:06
Is it the front brake or the rear brake? The what now and the what now? [laughs] The, uh, w- which brake isn't working on your bike? Um, I only have one brake on my bike, and that's the front brake. Huh.
• 14:24
Interesting. And, um, she's... It, it, it's... I, I... What I have to do is tackle my fears and adjust it a little bit,
• 14:36
but every time I, every time I monkey with it, I, I completely screw it up, and then I have to end up paying a guy at a bike shop like 30 bucks to fix it.
• 14:47
Because I, I'll, I'll admit that my, my, my, my biggest, my biggest weakness is the front brake. I don't, I cannot adjust that shit for nothing.
• 14:57
I don't know if I told you guys this or not, but, um, in Pennsylvania, I, I took the rear brake, I took the rear brake off of Heather and I threw it in the garbage. I'm like, "This is bullshit." I... That's interesting.
• 15:11
On a trike? Now, I, I've, I've only had the front brake for, uh, almost two years now, so. 'Cause it was a, it must've been a drum brake in the back, yeah? Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
• 15:25
It was, it, it's like a disc, it was a disc kind of thing. It's, uh, and that, that part's still there, but- Yeah, you just ripped off the cable...
• 15:33
but, um, I, I just, I, I took the whole thing off 'cause it was clicking and clacking and it w- and it maybe slowed us down at best. I don't know.
• 15:45
Um, when me and my brother put Heather together, I don't, I don't know if we did that right or not, but- [laughs] That may be... but I, I just, I threw that shit- Maybe not... in the garbage.
• 15:54
I've only had the front brake. Reminds me of a story my dad told me about brakes and, and the difference between French people and American people. French people don't care if their brakes make noise- Yeah...
• 16:04
as long as their cars stop. American people don't care if their cars stop as long as- Well- Only they care about-... the brakes don't make noise. [laughs]... the brakes. [laughs] Right.
• 16:11
Well- That makes a hell of a lot of sense from the- I'll, I'll, I'll tell, I'll tell you what I've got.... jogger.
• 16:16
[laughs] I've got three, I've got three noodles, I got three noodles in the pack, and I've got four boogers in the pack, and I'm like, "Okay, so I, I got all this equip- all this brake equipment."
• 16:28
I just, I just don't, I don't know what the hell to do with it, 'cause I, you know, that's my, that's m- that's my number one weakness is the front brake.
• 16:36
Well, some of the places you're riding through have to have, like, a cooperative or a bike collective that they could, uh- Yeah, totally... they could take you in- Yeah...
• 16:44
and, and give you a little bit of knowledge and help you get Heather back to, uh- It-... 128%. Well, right. Right.
• 16:52
And, um, um, I was, I was at about a 120% Jägermeister when, the last time somebody showed, showed me how to fix my front brake, so. Wh- where are you at on the Jägermeister scale right now?
• 17:06
Um, no, no Jägermeister today yet. Um, I haven't found a package store, but- Oh, that's how Florida works? I'm, I'm on the outskirts- It's kinda late there, isn't it?... I'm on the outskirts of town.
• 17:17
Because I was supposed to be on a bike path and just mellowing out and showing the music and not caring, but the bike path turned out to be, uh... Right, like,
• 17:31
I mean, you g- you guys might have found a way to bike through it, but when you got a tricycle, you can't, y- I mean, I, I really, I, I couldn't do it, so I had to go back. So then I had to go 16 miles down the road,
• 17:48
and I'm like 14 miles out of the 16 miles to the next city, and I, you know, it, it's... Google Maps, when there, w- w- on Google Maps, there's a s- there's a straight, a, a, a solid green line.
• 18:04
That means paved bike path. If there's a dotted green line, it might be, it might not be paved, it might be gravel, blah, blah, blah. So there's this solid green line. I'm like, "Oh yeah, bike path."
• 18:17
And I went up there, and like it was, it was, it was nothing. It was overgrown. It was, it was terrible. I'm like, "Oh great, now I gotta go back like 16 miles." And then, then I got stuck in the dark.
• 18:30
And you know how, how I love riding in the dark. [laughs] But anyway, I'm sorry. I, I don't mean to be- Oh, you're always-... ranting and raving... out on an adventure... and- For sure But yeah, I'm almost out of it.
• 18:45
As soon as I get on the A1A, and I get up to, uh, St. Augustine and Florida and Daytona Beach, I'm out. Oh man, I'll tell you what, I'm gonna be one happy homer. Cool. Sounds good, man.
• 18:58
Well, let us ke- keep up with- No, yeah. All I gotta do is- Let us keep up with your adventures and- All I gotta do is go through... Sorry? I said, let us keep up with your adventures, for sure. Right.
• 19:09
Well, all I gotta do is get through Savanna- I gotta get through Georgia. Oh, geez And then Georgia's one of the most bike un- uh, unfriendly bike places that you can imagine.
• 19:21
[laughs] Besides, okay, besides Mississippi, Alabama, and- [laughs]... South Carolina, which I also gotta go through South Carolina too. That's a lot of southern states there. It's like, oh. So- What, what's a shoulder?
• 19:36
I don't understand what you're saying to me. [laughs] All right, man. Well, thanks for giving us a status report. Yep, be careful out there. Yep. Oh yeah.
• 19:49
And, uh, uh, as I get closer and closer, we're gonna do the whole, uh... We're gonna do the Muskegon thing or what? Oh yeah, just- Yep... keep us posted. We're definitely on that plan.
• 19:59
Somehow we'll get over there and escort you into the state. Right. No, no, and I just wanted, I just wanted to check in with you guys.
• 20:08
I'm sor- I- I'm sorry if I'm ranting and raving, but, um- [laughs] No, gives us something to- There's a, there's a factory over here-... gives us something to listen to... I can, I can barely hear. Right on.
• 20:16
Well, give us a- You'll be cool, dude... give us a call next time. Thanks, brother. Yep. Well, um, next time I should be, uh, north of the Mason-Dixon Line, that's for damn sure. All right, man. Yeah. Thanks again. Cool.
• 20:28
Peace. Awesome. Bye. All right. Hey, y'all, y'all, y'all take it easy. You betcha. The cowboy store. Big Sexy. Remember that ad from the olden days? You betcha. That was just- Mm... a place to buy cowboy boots.
• 20:44
I don't know. In Milwaukee or some Wau- probably Waukesha or something. [laughs] I don't know. God bless. Big Sexy, ladies and gentlemen. Top of the hill. Oh yeah, we should, uh, probably- Ding, ding, ding...
• 20:55
do this Ding, da-ding, ding, da-ding, ding, ding. There's sound- While there's still room. Hey, hey, Foley guy. [laughs] Get the bell out over there. Jesus Christ.
• 21:00
[laughs] Uh, uh, well, what do you mean while there's still room? We got- No, yeah... we got endless cards to put- What?... sound on, or we have endless table to put beers on. Oh. Oh, I... It's a joke, Jesus.
• 21:14
[laughs] On Top of the Hill, ladies and gentlemen. Uh, uh, JK brought the beer today. Oh. Tell us why- Is there a theme?... you picked this particular beer today? Is there a theme, JK? Yes, because it will be St.
• 21:28
Paddy's Day. Oh. Tell me about St. Paddy's Day. It's when- Mm... that's when the Easter Bunny- Snakes? Is there snakes involved? [laughs] That's when the Easter Bunny- I've heard that before...
• 21:40
had to drop the eggs by the, the base of the tree with the guy. No, wait. That's a different- You know, I, I- Never mind. [laughs]... if we go back one year in podcasts, which we can because we're...
• 21:54
We could go back two years potentially [laughs] from this date, we would talk about the fact that I always bring up that Johnny Carson said there's two places to be for St. Patrick's Day. Do tell. Pregnant pause.
• 22:11
Oshkosh, Wisconsin- Oh my gosh... or Ireland. [laughs] Because Oshkosh, Wisconsin, they actually, the school had to change their spring break to be over St.
• 22:24
Patrick's Day so that most of the students would be out of the city during St. Patrick's Day because of rioting.
• 22:32
[laughs] Where my brother-in-law had a memory of him rolling a Volkswagen Beetle down the street end over end.
• 22:43
[laughs] So yeah, Oshkosh has that kind of reputation because the last time I saw Marilyn Manson in Milwaukee, which was many years ago, he went up to Oshkosh, and he didn't finish his show.
• 22:54
He got kind of pissed or something, and he did like maybe 40, 45 minutes, and there was rioting that ensued after. Mm-hmm. The show did not finish.
• 23:03
Like our own little- Small college towns will, uh, have a very, very, very, very- Violent... dire, dire reaction to, uh, to a, to big-time offenses. So- Yeah.
• 23:15
I'm not sure what that Volkswagen Bug was doing to the guy, but- I... Yeah, you know? You know, that, that, that's a separate beast. But- Well, s- so yeah.
• 23:21
So they've, they've always scheduled it over- So I put the call out. I... f- for something Irish. Yeah. Guinness, Smithwick's, Harp. Harp. The needle fell on Harp. Beautiful Harp. I did see Baltimore Blonde,
• 23:34
which I was speaking to you about, which apparently is a blonde ale made by Guinness. Oh. But it's got a, like, the Maryland flag, kind of cool stuff on it.
• 23:42
So I was about to get that, but- Because Guinness is now in the US too, right? Their- Sure... some of their beers are being produced here. I'm pretty damn sure. I, I believe by Budweiser. Oh. Well, that...
• 23:53
Well, then that- I believe that's how it works. I thought that, uh- But whatever... I thought Guinness was actually being produced in Canada and then being ex- Eh?... exported down to- Well, I think it's Stella...
• 24:01
the States. To be fair- Stella! Stella's by- Stella, Stella is an Anheuser-Busch- Yeah, yeah... tendril- Stella... at this point. Anyway- Well, at least at the last thing So today we have Harp, though. We have Harp.
• 24:12
Beer, beer, beer, beer, beer. So the needle fell on Harp. Boom. Which is actually better than I remembered. Yeah. Yeah.
• 24:17
I haven't had it in three years I mean, I see people drinking the Elation and- I enjoy hair quite a bit... th- well, they relabeled it or they repackaged it, and it l- kind of looks like an NA beer.
• 24:26
[clears throat] Sorry. You know what I mean? What? I'm trying to stretch my legs. There's something- My back is killing me... there's something about it. Yeah. It just, it, it looks like an NA beer.
• 24:34
[sighs] I mean, I don't know. I thought they, they had different labeling. Maybe he's really tricking us and it's an NA beer. Maybe. Let's have a look. So, uh, Mr.
• 24:42
Trusky, how was your, your winter of riding and commuting? It seems like you were out there every day or p- pretty close to it. Uh, pretty, pretty darn close, yeah. Yeah.
• 24:50
Um, [smacks lip] I've, I, I discovered the joys of pogies. Hmm. And that was, that was pretty much a game changer in and of itself. Um- You do-- do you do fixed in the crappy weather? Um, [sighs]
• 25:03
this winter I didn't really. It was kind of a, a change up, um, with that Wolverine [bike frame clunking] that I built up and, you know, was able to convert it over to a single speed easily. Um,
• 25:14
and just rode that, and I roasted a-- I almost roasted a free hub, but that was, that was my own negligence from years of not taking the thing apart and inspecting it. And
• 25:25
luckily got it apart, checked it out, cleaned the hell out of it, and replaced a bearing, and it was good to go after that. But... Right on. What are you running for tires on that puppy? Uh, these are some Vittoria 22s.
• 25:39
Nice. Yeah, nothing, nothing crazy on it. Yeah. It's still set up tubeless.
• 25:43
I mean, it's just my, uh, my year-round road bike, if you will, but just for winter I just throw the gears off the thing and, you know, just run it as a single speed. Sounds good.
• 25:52
Clean drivetrain is easy when you only have one gear. Yes. Yes. And it's so much cheaper. Yes. Yes. So much cheaper. Single speed or s- I'm- Is that-- I don't know this bike. Is it disc or rim? It's disc.
• 26:05
It's a Soma Wolverine. Even easier. The V2, yeah. The V2 version. Yes. Recently. Last year? Yeah. Yeah. Pretty, pretty recent. Yeah. Well, I think right a- Oh, I'm sorry. I know this bike...
• 26:14
right about summer or fall time, yeah. My bad. Yeah. I know exactly. Yeah. Yeah, the blue one. It's totally a fun disc brake bike. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Been a lot of talk, uh, in the old, uh, blogosphere about,
• 26:25
you know, why bikes are, have so many different standards with, with disc or rim or bottom bracket sizes or this or that, and started thinking about how much riding in the crappy weather, I'm really happy I have disc brakes [laughs] on my winter bike.
• 26:41
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I don't, I didn't never-- it's like, yeah, they worked fine, but there's reasons why, you know- Well, winter-... some, some things make sense. Not every stupid change makes sense. Oh, yeah.
• 26:53
Winter destroys a rim and a rim brake. [laughs] I just love it when- Well, yeah... when you get that final wear through, when it [whistles], you know, you get the puncture when you've worn through the aluminum rim. Yeah.
• 27:04
That sucks. [laughs] It sucks. That, that, that's a day killer right there.
• 27:08
[laughs] I mean, I always used to say that, you know, I mean, a, a, a caliper brake or, uh, any kind of rim brake is really a huge disc brake, so you know, it's like they're plenty efficient, but for our crappy weather here with the-- boy, th- there was a lot of salt and crap and just...
• 27:25
Oh, yeah. And I-- disc brakes work great. Yeah. Yeah, like, w- the, uh, the Collin Mali Franken-bike Huber build that I-- the bar beater- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
• 27:38
got replaced with the, uh, Surly Low Side, which is essentially my bar beater now, which is great. [laughs] But
• 27:47
that so- son of a bitch still has the, you know, the crappy caliper, you know, original [laughs] what original at that time brakes, that I've burned through so many times just 'cause it's like, "Okay, I'm just, I gotta go somewhere.
• 28:00
[whooshes] Oh wait, I have no pads. [imitates braking] All right. Let's just, okay, diagnose when I have to slow down [laughs] or to jump off and throw bike [laughs] kind of thing.
• 28:12
Or you gotta, you know, you have to Fred Flinstone it. Yeah, there was- That's the other part of the, the fun part of the crappy weather. You know, there was a perspective out of Minneapolis some ages ago that, you know,
• 28:25
that the contamination from all the road just crap, you know. And that's not just, you know, the water, the salt, the sand, the debris, but also, like, the oils. Mm-hmm.
• 28:34
Because obviously people are not necessarily super, super keen on necessarily keeping their vehicles 100%, you know, oil contained. Yeah.
• 28:42
[laughs] Um, and how that was just going to be, you know, a horrible, horrible thing that, you know, disc brakes on road bikes or disc brakes on commuters was a bad thing.
• 28:48
And here we are now, you know, 10 odd years, 13 years later after that little particular diatribe, and it's showing that, like- Very fun... you know, hey, they squeal when they're cold and wet. Yeah.
• 29:00
And then once they warm up, they're pretty much quiet and they still work, so. But they're very fun when they're cold and wet. [laughs] But- I love that noise...
• 29:08
even when you're cold, you, uh, yeah, you don't need a horn. [laughs] You don't need a bell. You don't. [laughs] It's like [laughs] Well, I w- I will say this.
• 29:14
I've, I've taken, because a lot of, like, especially Cool Stop or S- Jaguar or some of the companies that make pads that are compatible with the name brand brake make different compounds, and I'm li- I love the organic pads because
• 29:28
they bite quicker and they stay quieter, and it's like, you know, when you're commuting or you're riding around the city even, you're never really getting your brake pads hot enough to need a metallic pad.
• 29:37
You're not downhill racing or you're not doing crazy stuff. So to, to me anyway, it seems like these, these newer compounds are more, uh, commuter friendly. No, I'd agree. Yeah. I'd agree.
• 29:49
Uh, to a counterpoint, however, it's like if you're looking for, say, laziness- [laughs] Two hands, one up. Two hands up... yeah, yeah. Yeah. I can put another one up. Three hands, three hands. [laughs] I'm all in.
• 30:04
But if you're looking from a laziness perspective- I'll do two damn legs, though I'm the epitome of laziness...
• 30:08
the, uh, the, the change rate over between a center metallic compared to an organic or even a semi-metallic is considerably different. So it's like- Oh, sure, sure...
• 30:15
while they're noisier and they're, you know, you obviously have to take your time to break 'em in proper, but, and while they're noisier when they're cold or wet- overall longevity of this.
• 30:26
I mean, I look at this, I've got a set of pads in there for, that's, you know, hit the, hit the year mark, I believe, at this point and still going.
• 30:33
Then there's the other part where's both the semi-metallics and the organics will wear down a rotor fa- at a faster rate because of the, the coarser abrasives that they use to actually generate the friction. Mm-hmm.
• 30:44
Mm-hmm. So, and again, I'm lazy- Point... and also frugal. Counterpoint. [laughs] So I'll- Wasn't that a channel? That was a PBS show, wasn't it? I think so. Oh, yeah. Back in the '80s. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
• 30:55
It definitely was. Well, yeah, no, I, I, I hear you. I, mean, it, it's just nice having choices because in the b- Yeah... in, in the, in the beginning there was- In the beginning...
• 31:02
I think Hayes was one of the first companies to really do- It was the, uh- They had two compounds... different compounds. Yeah, they had the centrum, they had the semis. And I said, "It is good." [laughs] Right on.
• 31:12
Well, this has been Brake Talk here at, uh, Little Spectrum Cycling. Uh, John Trusky's been our- Guest host... our guest. Needed, needed Tony to do a little computer jiggery and, uh, stayed for the show.
• 31:25
So thanks very much, John. Hey, glad to oblige. Um, I guess we'll come back next week if, if people will listen. Happy Paddy's Day, y'all. Y'all. Yeah, actually, yeah. Well, we're gonna record next St.
• 31:39
Paddy's Day, but you won't hear us until after that. Yeah, see, that's why I got the Irish blues on. All right. JK's got the Irish. It's gonna be us- Come on, man... half an hour of us eating corned beef.
• 31:48
Occasional, Occasional Mike strikes again. We'll just be sitting here at the table eating corned beef. I guess we could take the rig to McBob's and do a, do an X version of the, the 103rd show.
• 31:58
I would, I would wager to guess- Or I'm just gonna throw out-... that's a bad idea. [laughs] I, I'm gonna throw this out. My wife claims that- Taking a soundboard to a Irish bar on St. Paddy's Day...
• 32:04
she can make better corned beef than McBob's. Yeah. Wait. She said, "I can make better corned beef." [sighs] Challenge accepted. Right? I'm, I'm... I hate corned beef. You are dead to me.
• 32:17
I think- Which means I am cutting you off. I do pr- And Tony Berger- I, I do prefer-... has been excommunicated- I prefer-... from the show.
• 32:22
[laughs] If I'm at a place and it says corned beef or pastrami, I'm gonna take pastrami. Yeah. I honestly will. [laughs] I mean... All right, everybody. We'll- I'm just saying, I, I'm in your camp on that one...
• 32:33
we were getting out of here anyway, but, uh, uh, come a- We'll call you. Come again next week. [laughs] Thank you.
• 32:41
  [upbeat music]
