- 1:18Speaker 2: Happy September?
- 1:20Speaker 1: I know, man, You've You've got a birthday in a
- 1:23Speaker 1: couple of days.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I do Yep, I'm turning the Big four to roh. Yeah,
- 1:27Speaker 2: we're gonna, We're gonna.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I was about to say we're gonna blow that back out,
- 1:32Speaker 1: but I don't, Uh, I don't think that's the intent
- 1:35Speaker 1: of what I what I was trying to convey there.
- 1:37Speaker 2: We're gonna have a blowout. We're gonna have a blowout, blowout. Yeah, Well,
- 1:41Speaker 2: I think I think we're gonna try and go on
- 1:46Speaker 2: a boat. I don't know if the water is gonna
- 1:48Speaker 2: be just right, but yeah, I don't care. Listen, I
- 1:52Speaker 2: turned forty back in June. I didn't want to do
- 1:55Speaker 2: anything for it because I'm still kind of struggling with
- 1:59Speaker 2: the idea of turning forty. But I think it meant
- 2:03Speaker 2: a lot to a lot of people. It does, so
- 2:06Speaker 2: it means more to people that are celebrating than is
- 2:10Speaker 2: the person. Yeah. I'm kind of surprised though, because you're
- 2:13Speaker 2: so easy going. I'm shocked at age even bothers you.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Well, it's just you know, I I have this feeling
- 2:19Speaker 1: of oh, man, like it could be any moment I
- 2:23Speaker 1: could be gone. Have I done everything that I want
- 2:25Speaker 1: to do? Have I gotten all my work done?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Thinking about that will kill you yeah, yeah, Well it's
- 2:30Speaker 2: not me. I just want to sit on a boat.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And the only concern I have is do I should
- 2:35Speaker 2: I do? Four hours or eight hours? That's it?
- 2:38Speaker 1: Well, I can tell you, kid, I can tell you.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I was kind of dreading it, and I thought, okay,
- 2:45Speaker 1: like whatever, we'll get together. We went to Yazoo Brewery
- 2:48Speaker 1: out in Madison, great establishment, ended up having a really
- 2:51Speaker 1: really nice day, and I had had a good time
- 2:54Speaker 1: in a way that I hadn't had a good time
- 2:57Speaker 1: in quite some quite some time.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I remember you telling me, like, what, we may only
- 3:00Speaker 2: be there for an hour or so, and we were
- 3:02Speaker 2: there for five hours. I was going to say I
- 3:04Speaker 2: was there for a couple, so I know it was
- 3:06Speaker 2: after me.
- 3:07Speaker 1: We were there for about five hours, and I went
- 3:10Speaker 1: home and thought, you know what, maybe forty is not
- 3:13Speaker 1: so bad after all.
- 3:14Speaker 2: My wife said, how does it feel to be the
- 3:16Speaker 2: first ones to leave? And I said, I I've done
- 3:19Speaker 2: all I can. I don't know what else to do
- 3:21Speaker 2: now I've done all I can and kids got to
- 3:25Speaker 2: get home.
- 3:25Speaker 1: So I would have stayed longer than five hours. But
- 3:28Speaker 1: eventually people started looking around like it's time to Like
- 3:32Speaker 1: we got it's time to go home.
- 3:34Speaker 2: It was good, it was fun. There is something there.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Chicken tenders at the grill Shack. At the grill Shack. Yes,
- 3:42Speaker 2: I forgot. There is a gril on my credit card.
- 3:44Speaker 2: It was very specific where I spent my money. Yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 2: They remind me of old school Applebee's chicken tenders that
- 3:50Speaker 2: I used to love. And I tell you what, man,
- 3:53Speaker 2: they are huge. Yeah. I remember rox Anne asking me
- 3:58Speaker 2: like a half pound or a however I think it's
- 4:00Speaker 2: half pound and pound I think, yeah, which means three
- 4:04Speaker 2: and then maybe like five or six on one. I'm like,
- 4:07Speaker 2: this is a half pound, and I promise you that's
- 4:10Speaker 2: more than enough. Yeah. So I can't tell you how
- 4:13Speaker 2: many times I've had to tell women half a pound
- 4:15Speaker 2: is more than enough.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Oh but yeah, No, that was fun. And yeah, I
- 4:22Speaker 1: mean it'll like, once you get to it, I feel
- 4:25Speaker 1: like it'll be.
- 4:28Speaker 2: It'll be rewarding. Yeah, I don't. Here's the I don't
- 4:32Speaker 2: feel forty. I'm not saying I feel twenty because I don't,
- 4:36Speaker 2: but I don't feel forty. But I also think like,
- 4:39Speaker 2: oh man, I don't look forty. But then I look
- 4:42Speaker 2: around and I think the older you get, the younger
- 4:45Speaker 2: you think you look. Yeah, you know, I have a
- 4:50Speaker 2: feeling that my nephews, who are like six and eight
- 4:54Speaker 2: probably do think like I could be sixty for all
- 4:58Speaker 2: they Uncle Brandon's old. I really don't know.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I feel it like I my hair is thinning. It's
- 5:07Speaker 1: not just like my hairline. Every time I reach up
- 5:10Speaker 1: and feel I'm like, oh god, that's skin. Yeah, there's
- 5:13Speaker 1: skin there, Like my hairline is starting to recede. But
- 5:17Speaker 1: it's also like the I feel like the quality of
- 5:19Speaker 1: my hair is diminishing. It's more of like, ah does happen?
- 5:23Speaker 1: Like a ratty kind of feeling. I remember when I
- 5:26Speaker 1: was young, my hair would be so like thick and full,
- 5:30Speaker 1: and I used to always get compliments on it.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I'm jealous. Like the older I've gotten, the more I'm like, man,
- 5:35Speaker 2: they've got good hair. Yeah, And I never used to
- 5:38Speaker 2: think about it. I wish I could see he can
- 5:41Speaker 2: fix he can cut his hair and looks it looks
- 5:43Speaker 2: no matter what. I can't, you know, like whoever it is.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I always thought, oh, I'm not going to care when
- 5:49Speaker 1: I start to lose my hair or when I start
- 5:51Speaker 1: to turn gray, and like losing losing the hair doesn't
- 5:54Speaker 1: really bother me, but it does kind of hit me, like, man,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I'm I am on camera a lot for work and
- 6:02Speaker 1: what we do here, Like I do catch myself like
- 6:06Speaker 1: watching myself back and thinking, you might should start thinking
- 6:10Speaker 1: about how you look like.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Well, you know it's funny like in high school and college,
- 6:15Speaker 2: I would never fix my hair. I never do the same.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So the older I got, the more I have. But
- 6:20Speaker 2: I think I've also come to appreciate that I need
- 6:23Speaker 2: to just maintain what I have, yeah, and do what
- 6:26Speaker 2: I can until I just I realize, Okay, you know
- 6:31Speaker 2: it's done. I will say, there are times where when
- 6:34Speaker 2: you get married and you become a dad, and I think,
- 6:38Speaker 2: just getting older, you don't care as much. Like I'm
- 6:40Speaker 2: not like I judge kids when I see them. I'm thinking,
- 6:44Speaker 2: who wears short shorts like that? Yeah? I thought if
- 6:47Speaker 2: I was in high school and I was wearing that,
- 6:50Speaker 2: people would tease me. Yeah, And now kids like wearing
- 6:54Speaker 2: socks up to their knees. Again, I guess that's cool.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I'm kinda I'm kind of with I'm kind of with
- 7:00Speaker 1: the short shorts now, though, are you. I kind of
- 7:02Speaker 1: like it because it is it is more comfortable.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I'm just something's gonna like slip out a twenty year old,
- 7:09Speaker 2: you got better luck than a forty year old.
- 7:12Speaker 1: But now I'm at a point where I'm like, well,
- 7:15Speaker 1: I can't wear the short shorts because I'm old, So
- 7:18Speaker 1: then it's gonna look like I'm trying to be young.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I guess it depends on on on what, because because
- 7:25Speaker 2: I I like, I mean, it wasn't like someone forced me.
- 7:31Speaker 2: But there's a time where like, oh, I'm I can't
- 7:35Speaker 2: go shop at American Eagle anymore.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I've had that moment too. Well, I'm too fat. Well,
- 7:42Speaker 1: but but it's I get fat because I'm old.
- 7:44Speaker 2: But you can tell that like a thirty something for you,
- 7:49Speaker 2: I'm not wearing that. I walked. First of all, I
- 7:51Speaker 2: don't even want a shirt that has a big ass
- 7:53Speaker 2: egle on it anymore. Like, yeah, that's just I don't
- 7:55Speaker 2: care about that. I walked through Old.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Navy not too long ago with my with my my
- 8:01Speaker 1: wife and my niece and nephew, and I stood there
- 8:04Speaker 1: for like five minutes, and I looked around, and I said,
- 8:07Speaker 1: I don't belong here anymore. Yeah, and I went I
- 8:09Speaker 1: went outside and stood in the hallway of them all.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I would disagree. I think O Navy's okay. But you
- 8:14Speaker 2: know what I find myself doing, Like whatever my kid likes,
- 8:16Speaker 2: I'm like going to see him, like, oh they got
- 8:18Speaker 2: a large and a Toy Story shirt. Yeah that's what
- 8:22Speaker 2: That's where I'm at now. But yeah, I now it's like,
- 8:25Speaker 2: oh that those collared golf shirts. Uh yeah, how nice?
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I like button downs, button down Hawaiian shirts.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Well, I like, I just bought some more T shirts
- 8:37Speaker 2: and I'm like it depends. Yeah, I've moved on from
- 8:40Speaker 2: American Eagle and then I go to like Banana Republic,
- 8:44Speaker 2: but I can rarely buy anything because it's so pricey.
- 8:47Speaker 2: But every now and then I still like my under
- 8:50Speaker 2: armour stuff. It's I still anytime. I don't wear it
- 8:54Speaker 2: as much like I used to.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But yeah, anytime I need clothes, I go to Kohl's
- 8:58Speaker 1: or jcpenny.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Now that's it for me. Well, you know I haven't
- 9:01Speaker 2: been to either of those in a while. Well, Cole's
- 9:03Speaker 2: is actually good. I have been there lately. J C
- 9:06Speaker 2: Pennies I have not, but I've definitely gotten shirts there.
- 9:09Speaker 2: I've gotten jackets there. Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Well, I mean that's what I'm saying, Like we're old
- 9:12Speaker 1: dudes now, but we're old dudes.
- 9:14Speaker 2: J Crew gets me every time they send me a
- 9:16Speaker 2: thing that says seventy percent off clearance, and I'm like, I'll.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Look, I've I've gotten. I've been too fat for J
- 9:23Speaker 1: Crew for quite some time. I will say I used
- 9:26Speaker 1: to shop there when I was two hundred pounds.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Well they're large. Is I'm still there, but I'm like,
- 9:32Speaker 2: it might be time. It's starting to get my side
- 9:35Speaker 2: a little bit. Well, I also think by him because
- 9:39Speaker 2: I'm not going to an extra large and I don't care.
- 9:41Speaker 1: This is another observation I made at Costco the other day.
- 9:44Speaker 1: The older you get, I think, I think you start
- 9:49Speaker 1: to lose that desire to like I'm gonna wear it.
- 9:54Speaker 1: You know, maybe this shirt is a little too tight,
- 9:56Speaker 1: but you know what, maybe it highlights my muscles or like,
- 9:59Speaker 1: you know, this is the style, this is the fashion.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And then I think the older you get, you're like,
- 10:03Speaker 1: what's comfortable?
- 10:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. That is true to the.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Point where I saw an old man at Costco the
- 10:10Speaker 1: other day that was wearing a shirt that was way
- 10:12Speaker 1: too tight for him, and it stood out to me
- 10:14Speaker 1: because I'm like, you're too old to be dressed like that, sir.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I didn't say that to him, but I was thinking, oh, no,
- 10:19Speaker 1: I've seen I've made me think like you do get
- 10:22Speaker 1: it looks.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Good, but that stomach is about to rip it open.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I saw this man's saddle bags about to bust out
- 10:32Speaker 1: the bottom of that that shirt, and I just thought, like,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you're too old for this.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I'm aware. I think I'm good at least like aware
- 10:40Speaker 2: of like, oh you know what, no like if you
- 10:43Speaker 2: can see like if you could, I mean, if you
- 10:46Speaker 2: basically looks like I like, I might as well just
- 10:49Speaker 2: take off my shirt and walk around this mall myself.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But I will say I also think because I'm out
- 10:56Speaker 2: of like, you get to an age where you just
- 10:57Speaker 2: don't give a damn as much. Sometimes I buy stuff
- 11:00Speaker 2: that I wouldn't have bought in my thirties or in
- 11:02Speaker 2: my twenties, and I buy it and I'm like, oh,
- 11:03Speaker 2: it looks good.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I go on this this T shirt that I'm wearing
- 11:07Speaker 1: now is I saw it j C. Penny for twelve
- 11:10Speaker 1: bucks and was like, hell, yeah, it's just a plain
- 11:12Speaker 1: gray T shirt. I'm in this awkward phase where I'm
- 11:15Speaker 1: in between sizes, where like A two X is too
- 11:18Speaker 1: short and my belly will hang out at the bottom
- 11:20Speaker 1: of it. But a three X is probably honestly to
- 11:23Speaker 1: like a big blanket. My god, the shirt, the sleeves
- 11:26Speaker 1: cover my elbows.
- 11:27Speaker 2: You know what else I'm into now, those those sleeveless
- 11:30Speaker 2: zip up vests. Yeah, now we're talking. I specifically will
- 11:34Speaker 2: buy long, plain, long sleeve shirts. Just go like, I
- 11:37Speaker 2: got a green vest that'll look good with that. Yeah.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we're starting to uh to buy from the LLBean catalog.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I'll be forty soon, but that's that doesn't really bother me.
- 11:48Speaker 2: The only thing I associate with age is like, oh,
- 11:51Speaker 2: my my son will be twenty, which means I'll be
- 11:54Speaker 2: this old. Yeah, that's really the only thing I really
- 11:56Speaker 2: associate it with.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I just think it hit me all at once. I
- 12:00Speaker 1: mean it really did. Like this past year has been
- 12:03Speaker 1: kind of a it almost like a from a physical standpoint,
- 12:07Speaker 1: like my body's telling me to slow down, like I
- 12:10Speaker 1: did a lot of stupid stuff when we were younger. Yeah,
- 12:13Speaker 1: and now my knees and my ankles and my feet
- 12:16Speaker 1: hurt really bad. I'm having I've had problems with my
- 12:20Speaker 1: back this year, and it's like you get to a
- 12:23Speaker 1: point where you go out for date night and you're
- 12:26Speaker 1: just walking around a park and you just go get
- 12:29Speaker 1: ice cream and go to dinner and you come home
- 12:31Speaker 1: and like your feet are throbbing. Yeah, I'm like, okay,
- 12:34Speaker 1: this is really I thought. I always heard that your
- 12:38Speaker 1: metabolism slows down at twenty five. Oh really, So like
- 12:41Speaker 1: I went through this thing twenty five where it's like, Okay,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I slowed down a little bit, but like I'm still
- 12:47Speaker 1: I'm still good, and I was active, I was working
- 12:50Speaker 1: out quite a bit, and then thirty came and I
- 12:52Speaker 1: was like, oh man, I've I must have really navigated
- 12:55Speaker 1: this pretty well. And then just a couple of years
- 12:59Speaker 1: ago it hit me like a ton of breaks. Was
- 13:00Speaker 1: like all at once. It's like if I don't if
- 13:03Speaker 1: I don't get up and move for like an hour
- 13:06Speaker 1: to an hour and a half a day, I feel stiff.
- 13:08Speaker 2: The next morning.
- 13:09Speaker 1: And then with that comes like the weight gain, and
- 13:12Speaker 1: then you start losing your hair and then my beard's
- 13:15Speaker 1: turning like white gray. It's like all at once, it
- 13:19Speaker 1: feels like what I thought was gonna happen to me
- 13:21Speaker 1: when I was younger is happening to me now. And
- 13:23Speaker 1: I'm like, wait a minute, this wasn't I thought I
- 13:25Speaker 1: made it through this.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Then the thing is forty really isn't that old when
- 13:29Speaker 2: you look at no span of life? So you're like, well, gosh,
- 13:33Speaker 2: in fact, cause I haven't gone to a gym since
- 13:36Speaker 2: my son's been born, so that's been over three years. Yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 2: But like I'm like exercise, which I mean, listen, it's
- 13:43Speaker 2: good exercise. I wish I could do it every day.
- 13:45Speaker 2: But like we go to the zoo and I'm dragging
- 13:48Speaker 2: that wagon around. I'm like, this is a word. This
- 13:51Speaker 2: is what it used to feel like when we would
- 13:53Speaker 2: go to the gym at MTSU. But yeah, I mean
- 13:58Speaker 2: I have noticed I've got some gray in my beard.
- 14:00Speaker 2: I've got a little bit of gray in my hair now,
- 14:02Speaker 2: which I which I that's a thing where I'm like, oh,
- 14:04Speaker 2: I have not I haven't seen anything. And then meanway
- 14:07Speaker 2: I got my hair got I got it cut short,
- 14:09Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, I see it.
- 14:11Speaker 1: My uh my wife likes the gray hair, which then
- 14:14Speaker 1: I say, I guess you're getting old too.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Yeah, well, my wife doesn't ever want me to shave
- 14:19Speaker 2: my beard because I'm like I kind of want to
- 14:21Speaker 2: shave it. Yeah, but I also don't know who I'll be. Yeah,
- 14:27Speaker 2: it's gone because I used to have a baby face.
- 14:30Speaker 2: As far as I know, I still do. But also,
- 14:32Speaker 2: is there another chin because I haven't seen it in
- 14:34Speaker 2: a while, because it's since COVID.
- 14:35Speaker 1: So all listen, I shave, I shave. I trimmed my beard.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'll never shave it because my head is as round
- 14:42Speaker 1: as a ping pong ball and it is baby like.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I look like the tip of a penis.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Shaved. It is.
- 14:55Speaker 1: It is not good. So I always keep my beard,
- 14:58Speaker 1: but I trim it. And the last time I trimmed it,
- 15:00Speaker 1: after it got real long, I realized like, oh god,
- 15:03Speaker 1: there's I'm starting to get that saggy, fucking old man
- 15:06Speaker 1: chin too.
- 15:08Speaker 2: And I'm like, this sucks, man, I don't want this.
- 15:12Speaker 1: So after forty years pretty much of being like I
- 15:16Speaker 1: don't care if I'm going to age, like whatever happens happens,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I think it looks weird when people all through their
- 15:21Speaker 1: bodies to try and look young, like you can always
- 15:24Speaker 1: tell I'm never going to be that guy. Now that's
- 15:26Speaker 1: I'm at that doorstep. I'm like, fuck, I see why,
- 15:30Speaker 1: I see how people are like no no, no, how.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Some people like refute like they can't, like there's no
- 15:34Speaker 2: embracing it. I mean you can. But but that's when
- 15:37Speaker 2: you see those people you're talking about, where like you
- 15:40Speaker 2: know double XL and someone told them that that medium
- 15:44Speaker 2: look good. I mean that's I had.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I had three pieces of pizza last night and got
- 15:50Speaker 1: heartburn because of the tomato sauce.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I'm not there, even though I can't really have pizza,
- 15:54Speaker 2: but I do love it. But you know, in ten years,
- 15:56Speaker 2: we're gonna be complaining about totally different stuff, Like we're
- 15:59Speaker 2: gonna be podcasting like, yeah, I can't like I can't
- 16:02Speaker 2: reach around to wipe my ass, be like I can't
- 16:05Speaker 2: bend over it. There's there's three months built up in
- 16:08Speaker 2: my crack. Yeah. I don't ask anybody either.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I can't. I can't move my knees anymore.
- 16:16Speaker 2: But you know who's age gracefully? Who's that? Nicole Kidman.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yeah, we are here to talk about Nicole Kidman's filmography today.
- 16:23Speaker 2: She's got a great doctor.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Practical Magic Too, is out now at the time that
- 16:28Speaker 1: this podcast is released. I want to ask because it
- 16:33Speaker 1: is kind of what inspired this conversation, Like what did
- 16:36Speaker 1: you have you seen the first Practical Magic and what
- 16:38Speaker 1: did you.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Think of it? I know, I know I saw in theaters.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I would assume it had to be with my mom
- 16:44Speaker 2: because it was in ninety eight. Yeah, and I what
- 16:50Speaker 2: I remember, besides Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kimmen being in it,
- 16:55Speaker 2: is that song put the Lime in the Coconut. Yeah.
- 16:58Speaker 2: So when the first trailer came out for This Seat,
- 17:00Speaker 2: it's a different version, but it's that song, and I'm like,
- 17:05Speaker 2: they know that it was the most memorable. Yeah, because
- 17:08Speaker 2: they dance through I think it's Margaret Midnight, Margarita's or something. Way.
- 17:11Speaker 2: They're all dancing around the table with a song. That's
- 17:14Speaker 2: what I remember the most. I recently rewatched it before
- 17:18Speaker 2: the sequel came out and didn't realize just how silly
- 17:22Speaker 2: and stupid it is.
- 17:23Speaker 1: It's one that my wife really likes, and I will
- 17:27Speaker 1: probably have to go see this movie in theaters. I'm
- 17:30Speaker 1: not too thrilled about it, because I, like you said,
- 17:33Speaker 1: silly and stupid, Like I just remember this, this film
- 17:37Speaker 1: kind of having this reputation.
- 17:39Speaker 2: You hear people talk about it a lot, and I
- 17:42Speaker 2: didn't realize how low light. I think it's a twenty
- 17:45Speaker 2: something percent rotten. Oh, I didn't even realize. I haven't
- 17:48Speaker 2: even looked at the rock. I'm pretty sure it's below thirty.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I'm almost positive.
- 17:51Speaker 1: And I watch it and I'm like, this is a
- 17:54Speaker 1: this is a terrible movie. Yeah, but so many people
- 17:57Speaker 1: like it.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think it's like a like a witchy
- 18:02Speaker 2: yah yah sisterhood type thing. Yeah yeah, sure, Like I
- 18:05Speaker 2: get the appeal, and I think I like Nicole Kim
- 18:07Speaker 2: and Center Bullick in it, like I think short together,
- 18:09Speaker 2: which sure, I guess is the main reason this second one,
- 18:13Speaker 2: because this is not a sequel. I don't think anybody
- 18:15Speaker 2: was like, well, it's you know what, it's gotta be
- 18:18Speaker 2: fan service, right for they guess in the right way. Money. Now,
- 18:22Speaker 2: I do know the first one was based off a
- 18:24Speaker 2: book and the second one is based off a book. Okay,
- 18:27Speaker 2: so maybe that I will say. I do think it's
- 18:31Speaker 2: probably worth noting that this time around they have a
- 18:34Speaker 2: female director, so probably could be in better hands because
- 18:39Speaker 2: a dude directed it in the late nineties. But not
- 18:41Speaker 2: saying anything wrong with it, but I think there might
- 18:43Speaker 2: be a lot's changed since ninety eight, so I would
- 18:46Speaker 2: say that having a female filmmaker, it might add something
- 18:53Speaker 2: to it.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I would say, maybe maybe a more sensitive, compassionate tone.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Yeah, but the story is still the story. And if
- 19:01Speaker 2: you really want to get real campy and witchy about it,
- 19:04Speaker 2: then I guess you can. But let me by the
- 19:06Speaker 2: time and that first one, by the time we get
- 19:08Speaker 2: to what's his name taken over to Cole Kimn's body,
- 19:12Speaker 2: and then like Aiden Quinn's sheriff badge thing, I'm just like,
- 19:17Speaker 2: I'm yeah. And then right when you think that's enough,
- 19:23Speaker 2: all the women from the town somehow except all of
- 19:25Speaker 2: this and have their brooms to sweep up that man's ashes.
- 19:28Speaker 2: So anyway, it's it's campy. Can you.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Can you cut it some slack for being a fun,
- 19:38Speaker 1: offbeat kind of spooky season movie.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Does that help it at all? Hum? Because that's like
- 19:44Speaker 2: I I octoger. Yeah, I'm not a fan of that one.
- 19:48Speaker 2: And it's not a good movie. It's very I hate
- 19:51Speaker 2: to say it, but it is. It's very bizarre. But
- 19:54Speaker 2: both of them, the Anne Hathaway one and the probably
- 19:58Speaker 2: the most popular, well known.
- 20:01Speaker 1: But I at least pop it on like during the
- 20:04Speaker 1: day some October work day, I'm working, something's going on
- 20:08Speaker 1: I've got it in the background because it's just Jack
- 20:11Speaker 1: Nicholson being unhinged. Yeah, Like, I appreciate it's not that
- 20:14Speaker 1: good of a movie, but I still like the vibe.
- 20:17Speaker 2: I don't even know I could I could see that
- 20:19Speaker 2: with practical magic, but like I don't, but I don't
- 20:22Speaker 2: think it leans. It doesn't lean enough into that. Yeah,
- 20:25Speaker 2: so that's fair enough. Yeah, is though, like east Wick
- 20:30Speaker 2: is like it is, it is what it it is
- 20:33Speaker 2: what it is, and and and goes in heavy. This
- 20:36Speaker 2: one still tries to be this romance drama too, because
- 20:41Speaker 2: her husband I don't know if you remember this, but
- 20:45Speaker 2: like almost gets run over by these cyclists and then
- 20:48Speaker 2: there's doesn't appear to be anything on the road and
- 20:51Speaker 2: then this truck just runs them over. Yeah, so I'm
- 20:54Speaker 2: thinking that guy had was getting revenge on something because
- 20:57Speaker 2: I'm swear to you there was nothing on that road.
- 21:00Speaker 2: But so and then it deals with abuse. Yeah, well
- 21:03Speaker 2: I don't know. So, yeah, it's.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Not not very self aware, no, no, like what the
- 21:10Speaker 1: movie actually it, and it.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Has these themes that are way more serious than what
- 21:14Speaker 2: they're even trying to do. So that's why I think
- 21:17Speaker 2: it's still pretty forgettable. And I think by the time
- 21:20Speaker 2: you get into like this season right September and especially
- 21:23Speaker 2: as we interer October, I can think of a lot
- 21:30Speaker 2: of different movies to watch. Yeah, I wouldn't think of
- 21:33Speaker 2: but but listen this one. Maybe it maybe maybe it
- 21:36Speaker 2: changes goes on a different path. I would like to
- 21:40Speaker 2: think that there is some reason to do this for
- 21:42Speaker 2: the especially for Bullock and Nicole Kidman to do it.
- 21:46Speaker 2: I did see that the director I don't know her name,
- 21:51Speaker 2: but it makes sense because I have a feeling that
- 21:55Speaker 2: they probably him picked her because she directed bird Box,
- 21:59Speaker 2: which has her Bullock in it. She directed The Undoing
- 22:04Speaker 2: that has Kidman and Hugh Grant. She also was a
- 22:08Speaker 2: director or is the director of that? Is it a
- 22:11Speaker 2: Netflix series? I think you guys watch The Perfect Couple
- 22:13Speaker 2: that had Nicole Kimman in it. Oh yeah, with Leov Shreiber. Yeah,
- 22:16Speaker 2: so she knows both of them. So I'm assuming that's
- 22:20Speaker 2: that plays a big part. Yeah, that I would imagine. So,
- 22:23Speaker 2: but I like bird Box is fine, and the Undoing
- 22:26Speaker 2: I quite enjoyed. The Perfect Couple was fun. Okay, I
- 22:29Speaker 2: was gonna say I never watched that, but so it was.
- 22:31Speaker 2: It was good. There might be something to it. I
- 22:33Speaker 2: just hope that song's in it again.
- 22:34Speaker 1: It kind of makes me wonder if this is a
- 22:36Speaker 1: case where it's like the book's a lot better than
- 22:40Speaker 1: the movie. Maybe maybe you take the material and you
- 22:43Speaker 1: you have every the right intentions, but then once it's executed,
- 22:47Speaker 1: it's like, hey, this isn't.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Really what it was.
- 22:50Speaker 1: So maybe maybe there is something to the sequel where
- 22:53Speaker 1: it'll be a little more I don't know if grounded
- 22:56Speaker 1: is the right word. Maybe coherent is the right word.
- 22:59Speaker 1: And I felt like the original Practical Magic was something
- 23:03Speaker 1: that just kind of got away.
- 23:05Speaker 2: From them all. Yeah, yeah, yeah, though I agree on that.
- 23:08Speaker 2: I also like, because I don't know about you, I
- 23:13Speaker 2: haven't seen in most people of a certain age don't
- 23:15Speaker 2: even know who I'm talking about. But stock Or Channing
- 23:18Speaker 2: has come back to be in this. So you have
- 23:21Speaker 2: the four original women in Practical Magic. Now. I don't
- 23:25Speaker 2: know what happened to Aiden Quinn. I didn't see that
- 23:27Speaker 2: he was in this. Lee paces is the unfortunate guy
- 23:30Speaker 2: in this one who who may or may not get
- 23:33Speaker 2: cursed and die. I have no idea. I have not
- 23:35Speaker 2: heard that name in a minute either. Yeah, well he's
- 23:37Speaker 2: now he's been doing some good stuff, but it's been
- 23:39Speaker 2: like on different shows and stuff. But so I kind
- 23:42Speaker 2: of liked that the four original ladies are there. And
- 23:44Speaker 2: then I believe it's Sandra Bullock's daughters and it's kind
- 23:48Speaker 2: of like this new generation curse it has. Is it
- 23:52Speaker 2: Macy Williams who was in Game of Thrones? Is that
- 23:54Speaker 2: how you say your name? Williams and Joey King they
- 23:58Speaker 2: play the daughters. Oh okay, I mean it's a good cast,
- 24:01Speaker 2: which so did the I mean, back in its day,
- 24:03Speaker 2: the first one had a good cast. So we'll see.
- 24:07Speaker 2: We'll see again. We're recording and I you know, I
- 24:10Speaker 2: don't know what reviews are in or anything like that,
- 24:12Speaker 2: but I was surprised that I think it means more
- 24:17Speaker 2: with Sandra Boke and Nicole Kimmen coming back to do
- 24:20Speaker 2: it after sure twenty years almost it's not like a reboot, right,
- 24:23Speaker 2: But I'm also like, of all the things to do,
- 24:29Speaker 2: someone thought, hey, let's get the band back. Okay, let's
- 24:32Speaker 2: do this, So we'll see, we'll see.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Well, it gave us the opportunity to kind of look
- 24:37Speaker 1: back at Nicole Kidman's filmography, and.
- 24:40Speaker 2: It's kind of a she's born here, I think. I
- 24:43Speaker 2: don't know if that's true, but she does live here now. Well,
- 24:49Speaker 2: I have seen her. I have seen her at least
- 24:52Speaker 2: two or three times. Is that right? Have you spoken
- 24:54Speaker 2: to her? No? I held the door open for her once,
- 24:57Speaker 2: and I didn't even realize it was her because her
- 24:58Speaker 2: assistant was first, and I was just one of those
- 25:01Speaker 2: like holding the door and she was someone said things,
- 25:03Speaker 2: so it's like you're welcome, and kept going, and then
- 25:05Speaker 2: I turned back and realized that Nicole Kimmon was behind her.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Oh so you're like, I just held the door for
- 25:11Speaker 2: Nicole Kitton. Yeah, yeah, I remember. She does a lot
- 25:15Speaker 2: of stuff with the National Film the I was about
- 25:17Speaker 2: to say, she's popped up at a few screenings. I
- 25:19Speaker 2: have not been there for most of them, but the
- 25:21Speaker 2: first one she actually came to see a movie and
- 25:25Speaker 2: Keith Urban was there to go get her, and I
- 25:29Speaker 2: walked him to the theater where she was at. I
- 25:32Speaker 2: also saw both of them at the Old Bell Court
- 25:35Speaker 2: when I was seeing Chay Yeah, and they were going
- 25:39Speaker 2: into the other theater trying to fight the bathroom line.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And anybody who used to go to that old Bill
- 25:45Speaker 2: Court theater, it was a real fight, including famous people
- 25:48Speaker 2: that had to fight through it. And then the last
- 25:50Speaker 2: time I saw was I think it was maybe for
- 25:56Speaker 2: the film festival, but she was going she was getting
- 26:01Speaker 2: her ticket scanned. She was with a couple of other
- 26:03Speaker 2: ladies and I realized it was her and they were
- 26:07Speaker 2: just scanning their tickets while I was talking to somebody,
- 26:09Speaker 2: And she was going to see that Colin Ferrell, Margot
- 26:12Speaker 2: Robbie movie, Big Bold, Beautiful Journey or something like that.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that was It had the makings of something,
- 26:20Speaker 2: which it was in late siptire October, so I'm pretty
- 26:23Speaker 2: sure she was probably in town anyway doing something later.
- 26:26Speaker 2: But and you know, she did a she did a thing,
- 26:31Speaker 2: well we did that, but Cold Mountain she did a
- 26:33Speaker 2: Q and A.
- 26:33Speaker 1: She did a Q and A with the Nashville Film
- 26:35Speaker 1: Festival last year for the anniversary some anniversary of Cold Mountain.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Well, and she also has done like anytime I think
- 26:42Speaker 2: any of her films come out, she winds up at
- 26:45Speaker 2: the Bell Court doing a Q and A. So, I mean,
- 26:47Speaker 2: she's definitely a presence around here.
- 26:50Speaker 1: So Nashville Zoneashville Natives. She was born in Nashville Zone.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Nicole Kidman Uh, this is a prolific filmography she has.
- 26:59Speaker 1: She has been in so much stuff she has. I've
- 27:03Speaker 1: got the numbers, real quick, go ahead. Seventy four acting credits,
- 27:07Speaker 1: twenty six I'm sorry, seventy four acting credits in film. Okay,
- 27:12Speaker 1: twenty six acting credits in television, three acting credits on stage.
- 27:16Speaker 1: She one hundred and three acting credits. And she's still working.
- 27:20Speaker 2: She's a big TV person now. She she's really dove in.
- 27:25Speaker 2: I know she's acer and stuff. Yeah, she's a producer
- 27:29Speaker 2: as well, Like she helped produce Margo's Got Money Troubles,
- 27:33Speaker 2: which I loved. And she's also in for a little
- 27:35Speaker 2: bit but I talked about the undoing, we talk about
- 27:38Speaker 2: Perfect Couple. But she's also in that Scarpetta, Big Little Lies,
- 27:44Speaker 2: which was a huge hit, The Perfect Couple, Lioness, Lions.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I think she might produce on that too.
- 27:52Speaker 1: It does say, yeah, she's executive producer of Lionis.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Yeah, she does a lot. Yeah.
- 27:58Speaker 1: She It seems like there's just there's always something with
- 28:02Speaker 1: Nicole Kitman in it, whether it's at the theaters or yeah,
- 28:05Speaker 1: streaming on television, whatever, Like she's just always always in
- 28:10Speaker 1: the public eye.
- 28:10Speaker 2: It feels like, what's the last movie that's come out
- 28:13Speaker 2: in theaters though? Well, I Baby Girl, Yeah, okay, that
- 28:20Speaker 2: was pretty recent. What is Spellbound? I don't even remember that.
- 28:24Speaker 2: I don't remember that either. So it's an animated film.
- 28:27Speaker 2: She has a voice roll. Oh, I think that's a
- 28:30Speaker 2: Netflix movie.
- 28:32Speaker 1: A family affair? Did that get a theatrical run? Rom
- 28:36Speaker 1: com with her and Zach Efron and Joey King and
- 28:39Speaker 1: Kathy Bass.
- 28:41Speaker 2: So yeah, it's.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Baby Girl in twenty twenty four, Aquaman in the Lost
- 28:47Speaker 1: Kingdom in twenty twenty three, The Northman, Oh yeah, twenty two.
- 28:54Speaker 2: So can I just say so? I went and looked
- 28:57Speaker 2: through and we when we kind of set like, okay,
- 28:59Speaker 2: this is gonna be a good one to do. I
- 29:07Speaker 2: didn't realize how many films she's done that are.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Either forgettable, like like straight to streaming kind of movies that.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Or just like Mayde didn't move the needle on anything.
- 29:24Speaker 2: And as we go through, I'll point them out. But
- 29:28Speaker 2: I feel like we could kind of just maybe pick
- 29:33Speaker 2: about three movies that have kind of defined her career
- 29:37Speaker 2: and that's probably about it. So I didn't know how
- 29:41Speaker 2: to how to broach the subject. I hope I see
- 29:43Speaker 2: her in public again because.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I like one of one of the questions I wanted
- 29:49Speaker 1: to ask you because I kind of went down the
- 29:50Speaker 1: same path and was like, oh boy, some of these
- 29:54Speaker 1: I don't even remember her in some of these movies
- 29:57Speaker 1: I don't even remember, Like is this a case because
- 30:03Speaker 1: you think, like, as famous as she is and all
- 30:07Speaker 1: of the memorable films that she's been in, and I mean,
- 30:10Speaker 1: she's a movie star, she is an A list. But
- 30:15Speaker 1: then you go and you look like seventy four film
- 30:17Speaker 1: credit film credits, and then you look at the Academy
- 30:21Speaker 1: Awards history, it's five nominations and she's.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Got one Oscar. She's won one Oscar.
- 30:27Speaker 1: So then you start kind of doing the math and
- 30:29Speaker 1: you're like, you know what, I don't want to say
- 30:32Speaker 1: overrated because I feel like that's too far because at
- 30:35Speaker 1: her best, she is one of the best of the game.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Well, and she could be on screen for five minutes
- 30:41Speaker 2: and give you more than what most people could do. Yeah,
- 30:43Speaker 2: two hours. Yeah, absolutely, I was gonna say I wouldn't
- 30:46Speaker 2: say overrated.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Either, Absolutely one of the most talented in film history.
- 30:52Speaker 1: But I do think there's a conversation to be had
- 30:57Speaker 1: about choices and you know what, maybe it's okay to
- 31:02Speaker 1: say no sometimes yeah, yeah, and I'll just I'll leave
- 31:06Speaker 1: it at that. As we get into it, I'm sure
- 31:08Speaker 1: we'll unravel that threat a little bit. Let's start, let's
- 31:13Speaker 1: start from the top. We'll do the film credits. I
- 31:19Speaker 1: don't remember a lot of these films from the eighties
- 31:21Speaker 1: that she's in Bush Christmas, BMX, Bandits. These are Australian films,
- 31:28Speaker 1: by the way, so maybe that explains why we haven't
- 31:34Speaker 1: seen him, Willison Burke, wind Rider, the Bit Part. These
- 31:39Speaker 1: are all Australian comedies, Emerald City, Dead Calm and the
- 31:46Speaker 1: nineteen ninety We get Days of Thunder, Tom Cruise, Robert Davall,
- 31:52Speaker 1: Randy Quaid, Michael Rookers in that I haven't seen Days
- 31:55Speaker 1: of Thunder, but it kind of did. It does feel
- 31:57Speaker 1: like in general, if you kind of go back and
- 32:00Speaker 1: you say, like the origins of Nicole Kidman's career, like
- 32:04Speaker 1: when did she really start to find footing and take
- 32:06Speaker 1: hold in American pop culture, A lot of people will
- 32:09Speaker 1: point to Days of Thunder. So I would ask you,
- 32:12Speaker 1: first of all, have you seen any of her Australian
- 32:15Speaker 1: films that she launched her career with I did go.
- 32:19Speaker 2: And watch Dead Calm because it has Sam Neo and
- 32:21Speaker 2: Billy Zane. It does and eighty eight, eighty nine, eighty nine,
- 32:26Speaker 2: So you're three years old when you went to see it. Yes,
- 32:29Speaker 2: that's correct. I it's very late eighties. It's like Sam
- 32:37Speaker 2: so roughly Billy zaying. They pick them up. She's they
- 32:42Speaker 2: Sam Neo and Nicole Kidmen, her husband and wife. They've
- 32:44Speaker 2: lost their child. So they basically get on the boat
- 32:47Speaker 2: to escape grieve whatever. Billy Zaye washes up, they pick
- 32:51Speaker 2: him up. He tells them that about his crew and
- 32:54Speaker 2: food poisoning stuff in any way spoiler alert, he's he's
- 32:58Speaker 2: a murderer. And when sam Neil goes to look at
- 33:01Speaker 2: the boat because he's like, hey, we don't need to
- 33:03Speaker 2: go back and look or anything, he's suspicious. He goes
- 33:07Speaker 2: finds all the dead bodies and stuff, and then the
- 33:09Speaker 2: whole movie is really about the cat and mouse game
- 33:12Speaker 2: between Kidman and Zane and sam Neil on this sinking
- 33:15Speaker 2: ship trying to get find his way back to his
- 33:18Speaker 2: wife before things happen. So one, she's not really the
- 33:24Speaker 2: damsel in distress. She's kind of has taken over. She
- 33:26Speaker 2: I mean, they talk to each other all through the radio,
- 33:29Speaker 2: but she's the one that is Like. I kind of
- 33:32Speaker 2: liked how sort of powerful her character was in this
- 33:35Speaker 2: late eighties of a movie that didn't He could have
- 33:38Speaker 2: easily been a oh, come help me, and sam Neil
- 33:41Speaker 2: gets her. But literally they spend most of the movie apart.
- 33:45Speaker 2: My favorite part is at the end when they finally
- 33:50Speaker 2: do get First of all, he's thrown in this raft thing,
- 33:53Speaker 2: but of course, as you think it's a happy ending,
- 33:58Speaker 2: the raft is empty. Where did he go? Oh my?
- 34:01Speaker 2: He shows back up. Sam Neil gets a flare, fires
- 34:09Speaker 2: it through one of the sales, straight through Billy Zane's head.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Oh shit, and he goes flying off the bat. Oh
- 34:17Speaker 2: my god. And that's when I knew this movie was
- 34:20Speaker 2: kick Cass. There we go. Now we're talking. Now we're talking.
- 34:23Speaker 2: But besides that, No Days of Thunder, which that's also
- 34:27Speaker 2: where she met Tom Cruise. I don't know if it's
- 34:30Speaker 2: been a while because her and Keith Urban have really
- 34:33Speaker 2: kind of been what most people know of a certain age,
- 34:35Speaker 2: but Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were married. They actually
- 34:38Speaker 2: do have kids.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Together, and they did several movies together too. It was
- 34:41Speaker 1: I remember that being a thing back in the nineties
- 34:43Speaker 1: when we were kids.
- 34:44Speaker 2: It was yeah and so so yeah, I mean I remembered.
- 34:52Speaker 2: I remember her in Days of Thunder. Days of Thunder
- 34:55Speaker 2: is a very cool I've never seen racing movie. It's
- 35:00Speaker 2: it's cool in the way movies like that used to
- 35:03Speaker 2: be poor.
- 35:03Speaker 1: We might have to do a movie review rewind episode
- 35:06Speaker 1: on that, because I picked up the DVD you got, Robert. Yeah,
- 35:10Speaker 1: I picked up at the DV I picked up the
- 35:12Speaker 1: DVD at our friends at danger Zone Video Shop.
- 35:16Speaker 2: It's not too long ago, my I I'll go I
- 35:21Speaker 2: still think I when we get to it, I'll tell
- 35:26Speaker 2: you the first movie I think I saw Nicole Kimming
- 35:29Speaker 2: in though, and it was Days of Thunder.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Well, let's let's go through the nineties and again, we're
- 35:34Speaker 1: just gonna have to go through these chunk at a
- 35:38Speaker 1: time because there's so many. Ninety one we had Flirting
- 35:41Speaker 1: and Billy Bathgate. Ninety two was Far and Away, which
- 35:45Speaker 1: was her and Tom Cruise. Ninety three is Malice, Her
- 35:50Speaker 1: and Bill Pullman. My Life is also in ninety.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Three, remember that with Michael Keaton and Michael Keaton that
- 35:57Speaker 2: was a very sad movie. I think where He's dying.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Ninety five is Batman Forever. She plays Poison Ivy. Wait, no, no,
- 36:06Speaker 1: she was not poisoned.
- 36:07Speaker 2: She she was just the I don't remember the porter
- 36:11Speaker 2: girl that was trying to became Batman's love interest with
- 36:15Speaker 2: Jim Carrey and I don't. I don't remember her in
- 36:18Speaker 2: Batman Forever.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Yeah, to Die For was also ninety five, ninety six,
- 36:23Speaker 1: The Portrait of a Lady, ninety seven The Peacemaker her
- 36:26Speaker 1: and George Clooney's working with all the Hunks. Yes she
- 36:30Speaker 1: is ninety eight Practical Magic. We already talked about that.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Ninety nine wraps up the decade in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes
- 36:37Speaker 1: Wide Shut.
- 36:39Speaker 2: So Batman Forever is the one I think I first
- 36:44Speaker 2: remember seeing a cool I gotta look her up because
- 36:46Speaker 2: I do not remember. It was either a reporter or
- 36:49Speaker 2: a photographer with Val Kilmer. He was Batman, Jim Carrey, Riddler,
- 36:54Speaker 2: Tommy Lee Jones's two face. But she was just kind
- 36:57Speaker 2: of the love interest.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Which movie was Poison Ivy in because she's not in
- 37:03Speaker 1: Batman Forever.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Batman and Robin that was mister Freeze. Uma Thurman was
- 37:07Speaker 2: Poison Ivy. That Clooney with nipples that suit. So yeah,
- 37:14Speaker 2: she was just a love interest.
- 37:16Speaker 1: I need to rewatch Batman Forever.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Yeah, she was just a love interest. And my gosh,
- 37:22Speaker 2: she looks so young. Yeah. So Batman Forever is the
- 37:25Speaker 2: first one that I really think I remember because I
- 37:28Speaker 2: definitely saw that in theaters.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Doctor Chase Meridian is her credit. Yeah, so I guess
- 37:34Speaker 1: she was a doctor. Maybe I don't know.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Yeah, oh uh, maybe maybe she was the therapist to Riddler,
- 37:43Speaker 2: to Edward Nigma. I think that was it. I mean,
- 37:48Speaker 2: how can anyone forget a shame on you? But I
- 37:51Speaker 2: will say I think one of her best roles is
- 37:55Speaker 2: in to Dive for She plays the weather girl walking
- 37:58Speaker 2: Phoenix is in it, and she basically it's it is campy,
- 38:02Speaker 2: it's a horror comedy type, but she plays it so well.
- 38:06Speaker 2: She's so brilliant basically trying to get these guys to
- 38:09Speaker 2: kill her husband.
- 38:10Speaker 1: She won a Golden Globe for this. Yeah, so she
- 38:13Speaker 1: won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion
- 38:16Speaker 1: Picture Comedy or Musical.
- 38:17Speaker 2: I think I watched this quite a few years ago,
- 38:21Speaker 2: but I think because my wife liked it. She likes
- 38:23Speaker 2: that one and what's the what's the Kathleen Turner baby
- 38:30Speaker 2: can't be one serial mom. I haven't heard of it,
- 38:34Speaker 2: but they're both campy in a way, but also very
- 38:37Speaker 2: sort of deranged and funny, darkly funny. But I think
- 38:41Speaker 2: that's one of her best performances and something I don't
- 38:45Speaker 2: really think she's even tried. Again.
- 38:49Speaker 1: I think at this point we get into the two thousands,
- 38:54Speaker 1: and that's where I start recognizing like Mulin Rouge the others.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Well, hang on one second, we're not getting off the nineties,
- 39:01Speaker 2: yit are we with that? Well talking about Okay, Well, no,
- 39:04Speaker 2: I you skipped over one that you I.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Was just gonna say, like, that's I feel like those
- 39:10Speaker 1: that run of movies is when I started like I'm
- 39:13Speaker 1: older at that point, I'm like fifteen, sixteen years old,
- 39:16Speaker 1: and it's not just oh, Nicole Kidman's a movie star.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yeah, like you've actually seen I'm actually seen some of
- 39:23Speaker 2: her work.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'm with you, like, I feel like Batman
- 39:26Speaker 1: Forever probably would have been If I'm just looking at
- 39:29Speaker 1: this list of movies, it's probably Batman Forever that I
- 39:34Speaker 1: would have first seen her.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I've always wanted to see Coming Away. I don't.
- 39:40Speaker 2: I don't. I definitely haven't seen it all, but I
- 39:42Speaker 2: feel like I've seen bits and pieces and just never
- 39:45Speaker 2: finished it. Yeah, but I believe it's a pretty well
- 39:50Speaker 2: received movie.
- 39:51Speaker 1: But then I go to that early two thousand's run
- 39:54Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, this is Nicole Kidman the movie Star.
- 39:56Speaker 1: And then you look back and it's like, oh, yeah,
- 39:59Speaker 1: it's she was doing practical Magic and Eyes Wide Shut
- 40:02Speaker 1: and Batman Forever in Days of Thunder like all that.
- 40:06Speaker 1: But I didn't really realize it at the time.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Peacemaker is a very forgettable movie for both her and Clooney. Yeah,
- 40:13Speaker 2: ninety seven, Like that's a Clooney's still trying to what
- 40:17Speaker 2: a moment in time. Yeah, it's like a moment in
- 40:20Speaker 2: time kind of film. And then she ends up being
- 40:23Speaker 2: in Stanley Kubrick's last film.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Yeah, Ice Wide Shut is probably one of my favorite
- 40:28Speaker 1: films of hers.
- 40:29Speaker 2: I don't really like it, and I've watched it more
- 40:34Speaker 2: than once, mostly for this but I I just can't
- 40:41Speaker 2: get into it. But it's also a kubric thing for
- 40:43Speaker 2: me too. I like what they're doing. It's not even
- 40:47Speaker 2: based on performances, it's just I just don't I just
- 40:53Speaker 2: can't get there. It's a very long, slow movie. Yep.
- 40:57Speaker 2: I mean, but that's a lot of it's a lot
- 40:59Speaker 2: of his film. Yeah, Yeah, that's Kubrick in a nutshell.
- 41:02Speaker 2: But I mean it's beautifully done. It looks great And
- 41:07Speaker 2: how vulnerable do you have to be, especially with her character, Yeah,
- 41:12Speaker 2: to be like that and to kind of put yourself
- 41:15Speaker 2: out there on many levels. But yeah, that Yeah, it's
- 41:20Speaker 2: a very weird movie.
- 41:22Speaker 1: It feels very whole thing is quite dreamlike.
- 41:26Speaker 2: I think for most people, it's really famous because it's
- 41:32Speaker 2: Kubrick's last film and they're a real couple. Yeah. Now
- 41:36Speaker 2: it's kind of gotten a resurgence because a lot of
- 41:39Speaker 2: people think these parties are now come to find out
- 41:41Speaker 2: are probably real. Well, and Kubrick probably knew it then.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the whole Like there's a whole lore around
- 41:48Speaker 1: this film too about Stanley Kubrick's death and like, oh
- 41:53Speaker 1: was he revealing? Did he get too close? Like were
- 41:56Speaker 1: they trying to silence someone.
- 41:57Speaker 2: I've seen enough documentaries to know that Kubrick was on
- 41:59Speaker 2: his way out when he was doing this movie. Anyway,
- 42:02Speaker 2: I don't think something just snuck up and got him.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And I like he he was kind of a it
- 42:07Speaker 1: seemed like kind of a paranoid guy at the end
- 42:11Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 42:12Speaker 2: If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure someone like finished it.
- 42:17Speaker 2: M like in I'm pretty sure he died before it
- 42:23Speaker 2: was complete. I think most of it was shot. It
- 42:26Speaker 2: may have been the editing part, but that was about it,
- 42:29Speaker 2: and parts of it feels like Spielberg helped. Yeah, it
- 42:34Speaker 2: might have been I don't remember spec something like that
- 42:36Speaker 2: where he he did a favor and they say that
- 42:39Speaker 2: he left, if I'm not mistaken, and no one looked
- 42:45Speaker 2: us up, but there he talked about how he was
- 42:49Speaker 2: kind of in development, creating things and casting for Harry
- 42:52Speaker 2: Potter and he left to do a favor. And I
- 42:56Speaker 2: think I read the favor was helping complete Eyes White
- 42:59Speaker 2: shut Kubrick. Okay, yeah, I he was doing Disclosure Day stuff.
- 43:06Speaker 2: He it was referenced a couple of times, but he
- 43:08Speaker 2: never flat out set it. But some but people said
- 43:10Speaker 2: that it was the Kubrick family had asked him to help.
- 43:14Speaker 2: And again, filming was done. It was just kind of
- 43:17Speaker 2: post production stuff.
- 43:20Speaker 1: I can't find it off the cuff, but but that's
- 43:22Speaker 1: I'm sure it's in our episode of movie Review rewind
- 43:25Speaker 1: On Ice Wide Shut Yeah, a.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Few years ago.
- 43:29Speaker 1: So then we get to the two thousands and we've
- 43:31Speaker 1: got Mulin Rouge the others, Birthday Girl in two thousand
- 43:35Speaker 1: and one. I don't remember Birthday Girl.
- 43:37Speaker 2: I remember it because that's comedy thriller. That's when Ben
- 43:42Speaker 2: Chaplain was submended to be the next you know, actor's actor. Anyway,
- 43:47Speaker 2: it didn't work out, but I do remember renting it,
- 43:50Speaker 2: I think, but yeah, I mean Moulin Rouge and the others.
- 43:53Speaker 1: That's a She has an uncredited voice cameo in Panic
- 43:58Speaker 1: Room in two thousand but two thousand and two also
- 44:03Speaker 1: yields The Hours, for which she won her only Oscar
- 44:07Speaker 1: for Best Actress. And then in two thousand and three
- 44:11Speaker 1: she's in a film called Dogville The Human Stain.
- 44:16Speaker 2: That has Anthony Hopkins and I remember.
- 44:18Speaker 1: That and Cold Mountain, Cold Mountains two thousand and three,
- 44:22Speaker 1: which Cold Mountains met another one of hers. It's probably
- 44:26Speaker 1: if we're doing a Mount Rushmore at the end, I'm
- 44:29Speaker 1: Cold Mountain was awesome, which we do have an episode
- 44:31Speaker 1: of movie review rewind On in the archives two thousand
- 44:34Speaker 1: and four, The Stepford Wives, which I would like to
- 44:37Speaker 1: go back and Rewatch. At some point, she's in Birth
- 44:42Speaker 1: and a short film titled number five of the film
- 44:45Speaker 1: two thousand and five.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Was it is boz Lherman. He probably, I still feel
- 44:54Speaker 2: like that Chanel are for Stach. I'm sure.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Let's let's well, let's open it up. We got time here.
- 45:01Speaker 1: It is the Chanell thing. It is a thirty three
- 45:04Speaker 1: million dollar Chanelle commercial, a new breed of advertising crossover
- 45:09Speaker 1: films known as branded content. The film was initially screened
- 45:14Speaker 1: in many North American cinemas during the coming Attraction section
- 45:18Speaker 1: preceding the main feature.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Let me tell you something, nobody remembers that the day
- 45:24Speaker 2: that AMC revealed.
- 45:26Speaker 1: That's right, that's right. Two thousand and five, she's in
- 45:30Speaker 1: the Interpreter Bewitched with Will Ferrell. In two thousand and six,
- 45:36Speaker 1: she's in a film titled fur. She has a voice
- 45:41Speaker 1: roll and happy feet. Oh yeah, and let's see. Two
- 45:47Speaker 1: thousand and seven is the Invasion. I don't remember that.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Remake of Invasion of Body Snatchers with Daniel Craig. Yeah,
- 45:55Speaker 2: Margo at the Wedding. That's a good one. That's got
- 45:58Speaker 2: Jack Black in it and Jennifer for Jason Lee. That's
- 46:01Speaker 2: a good one. The Golden Compass.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Really, Oh yeah it is, Yeah, it is Jack Black. Yeah,
- 46:10Speaker 1: John Turturo, you didn't tell me. Oh sorry, gosh, how
- 46:13Speaker 1: could you forget? Two thousand and eight, she's reunited with
- 46:16Speaker 1: boz Lerman for Australia. In two thousand and nine, she's
- 46:20Speaker 1: in a film called nine oh yeah, and that gets
- 46:24Speaker 1: us through the two thousands. So, like I said, that's
- 46:27Speaker 1: a that's a large chunk of films. But it kind
- 46:29Speaker 1: of feels like this is this is the point where
- 46:33Speaker 1: like she's she's kind of an established actress at this point.
- 46:36Speaker 2: She's getting good paydays for some and then doing some
- 46:39Speaker 2: artsy stuff. I remember, I don't. I remember for being weird,
- 46:44Speaker 2: and I remember renting it and Robert Downey Juniors in it,
- 46:49Speaker 2: But that's about all I really know. I just remember
- 46:52Speaker 2: it being very weird.
- 46:54Speaker 1: It stars Nicole Kidman is iconic American photographer Diane Arbus,
- 46:58Speaker 1: who is known for her string disturbing images, and also
- 47:01Speaker 1: features Robert Downey Jr. And Ty Burrell Okay, who directed it.
- 47:06Speaker 1: As the title implies, the film is largely fictional. It
- 47:09Speaker 1: is directed by Stephen Shineberg.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Okay, I was thinking it was like a your ghost
- 47:15Speaker 2: type thing, but it's that kind of vibes. Yeah, and
- 47:18Speaker 2: then Dogville, I don't remember any of I remember Dogville,
- 47:24Speaker 2: but I'll be honest Shaneberg's other films, by the way,
- 47:27Speaker 2: I would like to rewatch. I didn't get to rewatch
- 47:29Speaker 2: Dogville before this, but i'd like to rewatch it. But
- 47:32Speaker 2: I also remember that not being that fascinating either. Who
- 47:41Speaker 2: directed Dogville. Dogville is Lars von Treyer. Okay, that's who
- 47:47Speaker 2: I was thinking of. That's who I thought defer to.
- 47:52Speaker 2: So yeah, so put those aside. I remember seeing Birth
- 47:55Speaker 2: because it's the story of like this kid shows up
- 47:58Speaker 2: and supposedly he her dead husband. Again, I just remember
- 48:04Speaker 2: that sort of being boring, but also like it didn't
- 48:11Speaker 2: really make sense. So I think in some of these
- 48:16Speaker 2: films I kind of get maybe this artistic freedom type thing,
- 48:20Speaker 2: but I just don't nothing really connects. I just I
- 48:23Speaker 2: guess there's there's there's a risk in this, yeah, because
- 48:27Speaker 2: then there's the safe bets of like even though I
- 48:30Speaker 2: didn't really like Stepford Wives that much, I didn't think
- 48:32Speaker 2: it was that great.
- 48:33Speaker 1: I want to rewatch it because I remember thinking, oh,
- 48:36Speaker 1: this is pretty fun, but it's two thousand and four.
- 48:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Bewitch was lame. I remember liking that. I didn't
- 48:44Speaker 2: like that one. The interpreter's one of those. It was
- 48:48Speaker 2: her and Seampyn. I'm pretty sure they were both Oscar winners.
- 48:51Speaker 2: I couldn't even tell you much about that movie. Yeah,
- 48:53Speaker 2: it seems very forgettable. Remembered liking it, but it did,
- 48:57Speaker 2: but it didn't come out in theaters. I do, Yeah,
- 48:59Speaker 2: we saw it for sure. Moulin Rouge. My wife and
- 49:07Speaker 2: her sister love this movie. Yeah, and I like it.
- 49:13Speaker 2: I don't love it. I don't need to watch it
- 49:15Speaker 2: all the time. I do love Nicole Kidman and you
- 49:18Speaker 2: and McGregor. There's a lot of great supporting performances, but
- 49:24Speaker 2: it all rests on them, and I think they I
- 49:27Speaker 2: think they do a fabulous job. It's not it's not
- 49:32Speaker 2: my go to like. I don't watch it just to
- 49:34Speaker 2: watch it, but I do. I do like it, and
- 49:37Speaker 2: it has spawn off a ton of different things. I mean,
- 49:40Speaker 2: I'm sure the stage musical is brilliant, but I've also
- 49:45Speaker 2: heard that, you know, I guess to adapt. They they've
- 49:49Speaker 2: changed the songs, and I kind of like the songs
- 49:51Speaker 2: in the film, like, you know, like a rock sandel.
- 49:54Speaker 2: I just I like that. But and some would say
- 49:59Speaker 2: that she one for The Hours to make up for
- 50:02Speaker 2: her losing in Moulin Rouge. From Mulin Rouge, Well, what
- 50:08Speaker 2: did you think? What did you think of the Hours?
- 50:09Speaker 2: What did you think? I did rewatch that one. And
- 50:12Speaker 2: for people that don't know, she plays Virginia Wolf. She
- 50:15Speaker 2: is writing Miss Dollaway. And then there's a nineteen fifties
- 50:21Speaker 2: story going on at the same time that features Joyam
- 50:24Speaker 2: Moore and John c Riley. And there's a present day
- 50:27Speaker 2: which then would be two thousand and one two thousand
- 50:29Speaker 2: and two of Meryl Streep who's putting on this kind
- 50:31Speaker 2: of putting on this planning this party for her dying
- 50:34Speaker 2: friend played by Ed Harris, and those two connect. They
- 50:38Speaker 2: all three connect, but there's a very distinct connection between
- 50:42Speaker 2: the Joy and Moore one and the Meryl Streep one.
- 50:44Speaker 2: But I mean, I liked it. It's very performance driven
- 50:50Speaker 2: just because it's also I mean, it's also kind of
- 50:52Speaker 2: a you know, pretty depressing movie. It's all about really
- 50:59Speaker 2: just women being suffocated by society standards thoughts of I mean,
- 51:11Speaker 2: dealing with mental illness, depression, suicide. So if you don't know.
- 51:17Speaker 2: Virginia Wolf did kill herself, so.
- 51:21Speaker 1: That the field that year also included Selma Hyak for Freeda,
- 51:25Speaker 1: Diane Lane for Unfaithful, Julian Moore for Far from Heaven,
- 51:29Speaker 1: and Renee Zellwegger for Chicago. So is there someone else
- 51:33Speaker 1: in that field that you think you'd have given it to?
- 51:38Speaker 1: Prior Mulan Rouge by the way, the year before as
- 51:43Speaker 1: far as the Academy Awards go, So she loses that
- 51:48Speaker 1: one to that. Well, that was the halle Berry Monster's
- 51:51Speaker 1: Ball year.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and then the next year was who Renee for Chicago,
- 51:57Speaker 2: Selmahayak for Frieda.
- 51:59Speaker 1: Diane Lane form and Faithful, and Julian Moore for Far
- 52:02Speaker 1: From having.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Which Julia Moore was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for
- 52:05Speaker 2: The Hours as well, so she had a double nomination.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Can you believe it was nominated for Picture Director, Actress,
- 52:11Speaker 2: Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, But the one person that didn't
- 52:15Speaker 2: get nominated was Meryl Streep. Yeah, that's a little weird.
- 52:18Speaker 2: That seems unheard of, right, a little weird. I me, personally,
- 52:26Speaker 2: I would have probably given it to Ugh sma Hiaker,
- 52:34Speaker 2: renaesel Wigger. I would have done one of those. Yeah,
- 52:36Speaker 2: they're both great, and then they say, you know, they
- 52:41Speaker 2: that reneesel Wigger won for Cold Mountain because she should
- 52:43Speaker 2: have won for Chicago. So trying to make that through
- 52:48Speaker 2: which Renees eel Wigger and Nicole Kimmen would go on
- 52:50Speaker 2: to star in Cole Meuntain together. But the hours is
- 52:55Speaker 2: very Oscar baty and no that makes sense, but the
- 53:00Speaker 2: performances are good and it's not and I mean, if
- 53:02Speaker 2: you think about it, you I mean, look at the
- 53:05Speaker 2: cast and then you're playing a real woman and it
- 53:07Speaker 2: is dealing with some very serious issues and you're talking
- 53:13Speaker 2: I mean, you know, over twenty something years ago. So
- 53:17Speaker 2: I'm glad I revisited. I probably won't watch it again,
- 53:20Speaker 2: but I had to at least remind myself because that
- 53:25Speaker 2: I knew that was her only Oscar win.
- 53:27Speaker 1: The other film from this decade that I would mention
- 53:30Speaker 1: we haven't talked about is The Others. And again there's
- 53:33Speaker 1: an episode of movie Review rewind about the Others, but
- 53:36Speaker 1: I think that gets kind of lost in the shelf.
- 53:39Speaker 2: I don't think it's horror films.
- 53:40Speaker 1: It's I don't think it's necessarily the type of film
- 53:43Speaker 1: that Nicole Kidman is known for It's not top of mind,
- 53:46Speaker 1: but to me, that's one of her absolute best.
- 53:49Speaker 2: I wish she would do stuff more stuff like that. Yeah,
- 53:52Speaker 2: because to me, that is a it's such a it's
- 53:55Speaker 2: such a smart and in Ghost Story, yeah it is.
- 54:02Speaker 2: I did I do like that one.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Okay, So let's go through the twenty ten's, and this
- 54:08Speaker 1: is where you're just gonna have to bear with me.
- 54:12Speaker 1: I'm just gonna have to rattle off a lot of these.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Twenty ten we have rabbit Hole, for which she was
- 54:20Speaker 1: nominated for Best Actress again, and then I never saw that,
- 54:27Speaker 1: And she's in Just Go with It, yep. In twenty eleven, Trespass,
- 54:32Speaker 1: Her and Nicholas Cage, twenty twelve, The Paper Boy, I
- 54:38Speaker 1: remember that. I don't remember that.
- 54:40Speaker 2: That's Lee Daniels had Zach Effron, Ye, Matth's Matthew McConaughey
- 54:45Speaker 2: in that. Let's see. I'd have to look. There's somebody
- 54:49Speaker 2: else that is with Zach.
- 54:50Speaker 1: It is Matthew McConaughey, Yes, John Cusacks in that film
- 54:55Speaker 1: How About It? Stoker in twenty thirteen, The Railway May
- 55:00Speaker 1: in twenty thirteen.
- 55:01Speaker 2: I think that was what Call Him first?
- 55:03Speaker 1: It was, And then in twenty fourteen, she's in Grace
- 55:07Speaker 1: of Monaco Before I Go to Sleep and Paddington. Twenty fifteen,
- 55:13Speaker 1: we have Stranger Land, Queen of the Desert, the Family,
- 55:17Speaker 1: Fan Secret in Their Eyes. Twenty sixteen, we have Genius,
- 55:23Speaker 1: we have Lion, for which she was nominated.
- 55:25Speaker 2: That's her in that. That's a really good movie.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Twenty seventeen she's in How to Talk To Girls at Parties,
- 55:34Speaker 1: The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which is your gos,
- 55:38Speaker 1: The Beguiled Sophia Coppola. The upside which was that was
- 55:45Speaker 1: that when they tried to hang on, I got a
- 55:47Speaker 1: look for that Kevin Hart where they tried to make
- 55:50Speaker 1: Kevin Hart like a dream.
- 55:51Speaker 2: He was going to be a dramatic drama. Yeah. Yeah.
- 55:55Speaker 1: And twenty eighteen she's in Destroyer, Erased, and Aquaman. Twenty
- 56:04Speaker 1: nineteen we have The Goldfinch. We have Bombshell. Yah, Bombshell
- 56:09Speaker 1: was good.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:10Speaker 1: Twenty twenty the prom musical comedy I Don't I don't remember.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Hey, it has James Corden in it. Oh fuck It.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Twenty twenty one being The Ricardos, which I think she
- 56:23Speaker 1: got nominated for that, Yeah she did. Yeah, So we've
- 56:26Speaker 1: talked about all five of her nominations at this point.
- 56:30Speaker 1: The Northmen in twenty twenty two, Aquaman and The Lost
- 56:34Speaker 1: Kingdom in twenty three and twenty four, we had a
- 56:36Speaker 1: family Affair, She had a voice roll in Spellbound and
- 56:41Speaker 1: Baby Girl, and then twenty twenty five was Holland, which
- 56:45Speaker 1: that was straight to streaming, wasn't it?
- 56:47Speaker 2: Ye? That was an Amazon Prime one and.
- 56:49Speaker 1: That catches us up to Practical Magic two in twenty
- 56:52Speaker 1: twenty six.
- 56:53Speaker 2: So where do we start this is?
- 56:56Speaker 1: I don't know, like there's it feels like there's a
- 56:58Speaker 1: few gems along the way here, but that's a lot
- 57:01Speaker 1: of that's a lot.
- 57:02Speaker 2: Of Aquaman movies. Oh yeah, those were not good. Willem
- 57:06Speaker 2: Dafoe will tell you how stupid those are. And I
- 57:11Speaker 2: remember Baby Girl being kind of the risque, but it
- 57:18Speaker 2: wasn't as I. I thought she's great in it, and
- 57:23Speaker 2: so is oh man, is it Harris Dickinson. I think yeah,
- 57:29Speaker 2: I like their dynamic and also shout out to Antonio
- 57:32Speaker 2: benderas Antonio Benders. Who the hell would leave Antonio? I
- 57:36Speaker 2: don't know, I don't know, But I also didn't feel
- 57:40Speaker 2: like it was something that was as daring or as
- 57:42Speaker 2: bold as as I it was yet imagined it would be. Yeah,
- 57:45Speaker 2: it wasn't mean sexual stuff. I just mean, like just
- 57:48Speaker 2: in general, I'm with you, man.
- 57:50Speaker 1: I the reputation for this movie made it sound like
- 57:54Speaker 1: it was going to be a step.
- 57:55Speaker 2: Below porn, right, like, thank god we got I can't
- 57:58Speaker 2: believe it got out in theaters and it was trying
- 58:00Speaker 2: to become an awards contender as well.
- 58:03Speaker 1: And then I watched it and was just like, I
- 58:05Speaker 1: don't know, man, that's not like it seems kind of
- 58:08Speaker 1: run of the mill. Yeah, erotic thriller kind of stuff.
- 58:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Destroyer. I remember her being good in it. That's
- 58:16Speaker 2: one of those where she's kind of where she plays
- 58:17Speaker 2: this edgy detective. She looks rough in it, she's you know,
- 58:23Speaker 2: there's this physical transformation. I think they were also trying
- 58:26Speaker 2: to make that an oscar thing, and you know, it's
- 58:29Speaker 2: just some things there's I think the best way to
- 58:33Speaker 2: sum up this stretch is there's a lot of these
- 58:35Speaker 2: movies where she's good in them, but she's better than
- 58:38Speaker 2: the movie is. That's like she's not like her performance
- 58:41Speaker 2: is the only thing you can almost take away and think, well,
- 58:45Speaker 2: I was she's innocent in it.
- 58:47Speaker 1: I was going to bring up Being the Ricardos because
- 58:49Speaker 1: that's a film where like I loved watching her and
- 58:52Speaker 1: ho Javey aer Bardem together. Yeah, and it was to me,
- 58:56Speaker 1: it was enjoyable. But it's a case where there they're better.
- 59:00Speaker 1: The movie is just kind of standard fair. Yeah, it's
- 59:04Speaker 1: not like it's not that great, but they're great in it.
- 59:08Speaker 2: Uh.
- 59:08Speaker 1: To two that stand out and and like I love
- 59:13Speaker 1: the Northman. Robert Eggers is one of my favorite filmmaker.
- 59:17Speaker 2: She has a great scene about what's going on, but
- 59:23Speaker 2: she's not like the driving force. I feel like having
- 59:27Speaker 2: her adds credibility to your movie. Yeah, it's a it's
- 59:32Speaker 2: it's a nice little I mean it's it's close to
- 59:34Speaker 2: a cameo.
- 59:35Speaker 1: So I look at like bombshell, Like, okay, that's one
- 59:40Speaker 1: of the like in recent examples of like oh that's
- 59:44Speaker 1: a Nicole Kidman film kind of right.
- 59:46Speaker 2: Yeah, she kind of becomes that person, which Charlie's then
- 59:50Speaker 2: is in it somebody else there's three famous ladies. Yeah,
- 59:55Speaker 2: I just had it up Margo, Margot, Robbie. Yeah. So
- 59:59Speaker 2: and that's about the Robert Roger als Fox News. Uh,
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: stuff where playing does she play She didn't play Meghan Kelly.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: She plays somebody I can't remember was in a movie.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: And she plays somebody in the movie.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: She plays Gretchen Carlson. Charlie Starren plays Megan Kelly.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Okay, And so Nicole Kidman's Gretchen is the one that's
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: already I think it's been fired, but she was the
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: one that kind of first accused him. And Megan Kelly
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: is the one that still works there. And then Margot
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: Robbie plays kind of the young the recently hired, who
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: also is my favorite performance of all the ones you've named,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: and I will say she is great and Lion that's
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: a great nomination for Supporting actress. She's okay and boy erased.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: That's about a gay conversion that has Russell Crow's the
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: dad and oh man, what's his name? He was in
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Manchester by the Sea and oh gosh, can you look
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: up the kid as soon as you say it, he
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: was in Ladybird Lucas Hedges, Yes, Hedges, Okay, yeah. Again,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: it's fine. It's it's got you know, I it's got
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: important themes, but it's still just like it's standard stuff.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: So I see a pattern where a lot of this
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: stuff they wanted to become something more than what it
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: really is. Yeah, you know, not that there's not there's
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: anything wrong with these films that she's done, but they
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: just didn't really make a mark. Yeah. The one that
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: I would say, which I think is one of her
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: very best performances, one of her very best films that
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: was one of my favorite films of that year was
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: rabbit Hole. It's not real happy, joyful movie. It does
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: involve the death of their child and the kid who
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: did it. And I think Miles Teller plays the person
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: that the team that killed her son. Aaron Eckhart remember him,
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, played her husband. But it's just it. I
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: just remember when I was watching it, it's so profound
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: on just like and I can't imagine how it would
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: be now that I'm a parent, but it was really
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: it was really good and I and it's it will
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: ring you of emotion that is about grief and loss
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: and acceptance and and so so I highly recommend that one.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: That's would be on my Mount Rushmore for sure. Uh.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Not laughing at the subjects chewing on a wooden desk
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: with his teeth.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Came at a good came at a bad time. But
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: but yeah, rabbit Hole, I think is probably the best
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: I've seen her. What about her?
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I've been on a Sophia Coppola kick lately and rewatching
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: a lot of her movies. I haven't gotten to The
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Beguiled yet, but I know when we talked about Sophia
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Coppola for the Virgin Suicides movie review, rewind that we
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: did back in June, the topic kind of came up
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: and you said that you liked this.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: Movie, Yeah it's good and trying not jumper on too much.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: But The Beguiled and Uh, Killing of the Sacred.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Year same year, both in twenty seventeen, both acclaimed film.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Rapers films, and her performance definitely adds something. It doesn't
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: necessarily make or break it, but she certainly elevates the films.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: And Stoker. I love Stoker.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Stoker is twenty thirteen. That's when I wanted to watch
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: that one. Never seen that one.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: As Matthew Good and I never know how to say
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: her name, Mia or Maya Wasakowski, Yes, Waskowski. I think
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: that's Park chan Wook. I think that was one of
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: his English maybe his first English film, it is, but yeah,
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: it's it's so stylish, but it's also it's it's a
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: nicole Kidman's performance because it's it is more of sinister like,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: but it's also like I said, it's it's it's got real,
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: it's real beauty, but it's also quite a psycho a
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: stillar psychological type thriller and creepy. So yeah, so again
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: she's hitting some she's hitting some good ones, but they
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: they really start to kind of get piled up on
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: because of these other ones that just I mean, and
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: maybe it's for a check or maybe she was promised
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: something more in Aquaman and didn't work, and so by
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: the time she's doing the second one, it's like, man,
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: she's already signed a contract that said she had to
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: be in the second one, so she was there for
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: but she wasn't even in it that much. She's not
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: even either one that much.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: No, So if we were to task ourselves with coming
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: up with our Nicole Kidman Mount Rushmore's, let's let's think
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: about that, because I I get to you've seen more
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: for films than I have. Just let that be a
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: caveat there. I get to three pretty easily.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: No, I.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Have my life, I know it's not Batman forever. I
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: know that for sure, I have my four. My four
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: would be eyes wide shut. The others Cold Mountain and
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Mulan Rouge.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, and I kind of base mine on
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: where I think there was just a shift in each
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: of the ones I'm thinking of, or at least at
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: the beginning, I would put to Die for Moulin Rouge
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: rabbit Hole. Now see, the fourth one is kind of tough,
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: depending on if you just go by I would probably
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: I'm leaning towards performance and film, both being superb, so
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: I would probably go with I would probably go with
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: Cold Mountain. M hmm, but I will, well, what else
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: are you considering? That what makes it tough?
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Because I look at like Bombshell, Yeah, is in the conversation.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: For me, it is, but I also feel like there's
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: some and not that this is right or wrong, but
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: it is an ensemble. It's just a piece of a
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: vital piece, but a piece. So my other thing, just
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: because I like it when she does stuff different. I
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: considered the others because I think that is a I
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: think they're both excellent, but I kind of wish I
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: rewatched it. But I would almost put Stoker up there
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: just because I do know it was unlike anything, and
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: a lot of it is because Park chain Wook is
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: a very much of a unique filmmaker. So I'll put
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Stoker up there. I'll be different. So Stoker to die
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: for Mulin Rouge and rabbit Hole.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: There we go, all right? Any any parting thoughts are you?
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: Are you planning to see Practical Magic too?
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Probably? Probably? Yeah, Yeah, I mean I like Sandra Bullock too.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be a harmless thing. It's in
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: It's September, you know, tis the season, so I don't
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: expect much because, like we've talked about the beginning, I
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: don't really know why. I'm shocked this is not a
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: streaming thing. Yeah, I kind of. Yeah, but maybe since
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: the Originals back together and all that stuff, and you've
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: got two a List Oscar winning ladies, then you know,
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: maybe that'll do it. September is not a typically busy
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: yeah months, so I mean, you know, you could make
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: some I'm sure there's money to be made with it,
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: but I think my my biggest impression is is that
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: she is First of all, she's a top tier actress.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: She has her hand in everything. Now, I think she's
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: kind of throughout her career has really kind of taken
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: control of it. Yeah, and now she's is she just
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: gonna be a face on the screen. She's got a
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: part in everything from the hiring to production. Like I said,
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: she's a executive producer and a lot of this stuff.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: But I think when you look at her filmography, I
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: think there is this element of there should There's not
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: as many hits as you think there. Yeah, as long
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: as she's been, but I think her it's a blessing
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: and occur. Sometimes you're the best thing about the film,
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: but you're also doing films that seem to never they
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: can't compete. And I didn't quite realize that until I
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: just started looking through them and thought, I don't even
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: remember chunks of her career.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: This feels like one of the larger filmographies that we've
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: talked about on this podcast before. Yeah, I mean, I
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: can't think of anyone off the top of my head
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: that would rive.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: I think you're right, But I think a lot of
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: people and I think sort of like you. Even the
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: movies that I have mentioned, I bet a lot of
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: people have no idea what boy erased is Lion Rabbit
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: Hole yes that I thought sor she got Oscar nominations.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: I bet people don't even know what those are, much
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: less Interpreter and fur Yeah, and birth.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: I want to go back and watch some of those
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: silly movies that she did in the two thousands, like
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Bewitched and The Stepford Wives, because I remember thinking like.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: I would do Stepford Wives Bewitched.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: I remember thinking watching them, being like, this is stupid,
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: but I don't know, it's kind of fun, It's kind
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: of nostalgic.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: So I dead calm, and then I rewatched The Hours
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: and I rewatch Practical Magic. Everything else I either have
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: seen new about. But if anything, I hope people can
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: at least go and watch rabbit Hole.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: She has a another acting credit. It is a horror film.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: She's in the next Osgood Perkins movie called The Young People.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: Yeah, she's in it, and then there's a somebody else.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Heather Graham is in it, Johnny Knoxville is in it,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Tatiana Maslani is in it.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: Who is the I was thinking of, Yes, Maximum Pleasure,
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: guaranteed she's in. She stars in that Apple TV show.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: I highly recommend that one.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: But you scheduled to release in twenty twenty six, distributed
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: by Neon. It's got that good a Neon.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Their relationship hasn't been as good since Long Legs when
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: you think about the monkey and what's that other one
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: they did with those people. Oh yeah, I know what
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: you're talking about. Their like in this cabin.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: So hey, we talk about the we talk about the choices,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: like she is kind of getting out there and doing
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: some of that stuff again.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: So you know, hey, I'll give her this. It's very diverse.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: She has dabbled in a lot of stuff. And I
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: know she made a which apparently the percentage is very high,
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: but you know, she had made a statement a while
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: back about female directors and she's she's held to it. Yeah,
