- 1:53Speaker 1: we will be diving into the pain points for the
- 2:00Speaker 1: twenty twenty five Buffalo Bills and essentially having discussion of
- 2:04Speaker 1: as indicated in the title and ontographic, a discussion on
- 2:08Speaker 1: or of how did we get here? How did this
- 2:12Speaker 1: Bills team that had? And I do want to preface
- 2:15Speaker 1: all of this. I'll say this about the episode, but
- 2:17Speaker 1: I'll say it now as well, because this is the intro.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I don't think the Bills are done, are dead. I
- 2:22Speaker 1: don't think this season is over. I definitely think things
- 2:26Speaker 1: are very worrisome and very troublesome on both sides of
- 2:29Speaker 1: the ball. And I don't think they are things that
- 2:32Speaker 1: are easily rectified or fixed this year, and the fixes
- 2:39Speaker 1: even going forward are another conversation that is potentially worrisome
- 2:44Speaker 1: and troublesome. But we will discuss that as we go
- 2:47Speaker 1: forward here. But I don't think the Bills are done.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I don't think this season is over, and I don't think,
- 2:52Speaker 1: you know, they should be completely written off. But nonetheless,
- 2:55Speaker 1: this is a team that is floundering right now on
- 2:59Speaker 1: both sides of the ball. They they look just so
- 3:03Speaker 1: disconnected and disjointed. And I'm reading that comments. O kay more,
- 3:10Speaker 1: you said I woke up at Jordan Phillip's just got
- 3:14Speaker 1: displaced again. That's very funny Connor saying, Yo, what NBA
- 3:17Speaker 1: jersey is that? This is a white Chicago Bulls Scotty
- 3:19Speaker 1: Pippen jersey. Oh, I can't stand up enough so you
- 3:21Speaker 1: can see the thirty three. There's a thirty three. This
- 3:23Speaker 1: is a white Scottie Pippen Bulls jersey. He is arguably
- 3:28Speaker 1: my favorite NBA player of all time. Shout out to
- 3:31Speaker 1: you for noticing the jersey. Yeah, this team, they're floundering
- 3:34Speaker 1: on both sides of the ball. I don't think this
- 3:35Speaker 1: is news to anyone. I don't think that's revelatory or
- 3:38Speaker 1: some shocking statement. But I do want to kind of
- 3:43Speaker 1: trace how we got here, pick up the bread crumbs,
- 3:47Speaker 1: put all the puzzle pieces together, to talk about how
- 3:50Speaker 1: we got to this point here in twenty twenty five,
- 3:55Speaker 1: because I know there's a lot of conversation of who's
- 3:57Speaker 1: the blame or what's the blame or what the problem
- 4:00Speaker 1: is and the hows and the whys behind it all.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And I think there's a lot of narratives that are
- 4:05Speaker 1: out there based on, you know, certain biases that people have,
- 4:09Speaker 1: and even just kind of putting that within the backdrop
- 4:13Speaker 1: or landscape of all the emotion and the frustration that's
- 4:15Speaker 1: tied to where this team is right now, and as
- 4:18Speaker 1: we always do here on the show, especially when things
- 4:20Speaker 1: are tough here for the Buffalo Bills, Questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 4:24Speaker 1: anything you folks have or you want to put into
- 4:29Speaker 1: the chat. I'll bring everything up as much as humanly possible,
- 4:32Speaker 1: especially when I write solo on these episodes. I love
- 4:34Speaker 1: making these episodes as engaging and is engagement focused as possible.
- 4:39Speaker 1: So anything you got, questions, thoughts, comments, concerns, feel free
- 4:41Speaker 1: to put into the chat. I'll bring up everything as
- 4:43Speaker 1: much as I can. Super chats as always get priority
- 4:46Speaker 1: because I respect the monetary donation and I see the
- 4:51Speaker 1: color that's attached to them, and it distracts me from
- 4:53Speaker 1: my notes. I have several topics I want to get
- 4:55Speaker 1: into tonight. I'm sure that will fit in largely with
- 4:58Speaker 1: a lot of the frustrations, comments and things that you
- 5:00Speaker 1: folks have into the chat, and we'll dive into things
- 5:04Speaker 1: as we go forward here. But I kind of wanted
- 5:06Speaker 1: to start with, you know, kind of my my theme
- 5:11Speaker 1: for this episode and how it kind of came about. I.
- 5:15Speaker 1: You know, and I've said this before on the show,
- 5:16Speaker 1: largely in like joking manners, but when the Bills lost
- 5:22Speaker 1: in thirteen seconds that game, a good chunk of like
- 5:26Speaker 1: my fandom died. I was heartbroken and distraught with that loss.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It was another creative way for the Bills to lose
- 5:34Speaker 1: a game. It came on a very big stage, in
- 5:36Speaker 1: arguably the greatest football game, or at least NFL game
- 5:40Speaker 1: I had ever seen, and the team it came against,
- 5:42Speaker 1: and how it came about everything just it completely gutted me.
- 5:48Speaker 1: And between that and the way I see the game
- 5:52Speaker 1: of football from an exi's and no standpoint and a
- 5:54Speaker 1: schematic standpoint, and being in this podcast space and watching
- 5:57Speaker 1: all the tape that I do and doing this on
- 6:00Speaker 1: a regular basis, you know, I started to appreciate the
- 6:04Speaker 1: game more for just football, for the sport is what
- 6:06Speaker 1: it was, more so than just being a Bills fan,
- 6:08Speaker 1: even though I am one thousand percent, you know, a
- 6:10Speaker 1: Bills fan first and foremost when it comes to my fandom.
- 6:13Speaker 1: But between a good chunk of my heart and soul
- 6:15Speaker 1: dying in that game. And then the way that I
- 6:17Speaker 1: see the game and started to study it and learn
- 6:19Speaker 1: more about it and enjoy it more schematically in x's
- 6:22Speaker 1: and o's, I started to find myself not really getting
- 6:26Speaker 1: frustrated too much when when things wouldn't go the Bill's way,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I wasn't too you know, torn down with how they
- 6:32Speaker 1: lost to Cincinnati in the playoffs. You know, this pass
- 6:35Speaker 1: lost to Kansas City in the playoffs annoyed me a
- 6:37Speaker 1: good chunk because it was Kansas City again, and you know,
- 6:40Speaker 1: not recognizing the corner blitz from the boundary and the
- 6:43Speaker 1: drop from Kinka, all the injuries of the defense the
- 6:45Speaker 1: year before, I would get annoyed and bothered, but it
- 6:48Speaker 1: was very rare for me to really get, like legitimately frustrated.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And I found myself after this loss to the Texans
- 7:01Speaker 1: just not overwhelmingly frustrated, but extremely frustrated. And a lot
- 7:08Speaker 1: of it is tied to the schematics of it, and
- 7:11Speaker 1: a lot of it is tied to things that and
- 7:14Speaker 1: then I'm not saying this to pat myself on the back.
- 7:16Speaker 1: A lot of the struggles that we're seeing with this team.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And then we're going to talk about tonight. Are things
- 7:22Speaker 1: that I've been talking about since last season that I
- 7:26Speaker 1: talked about the entirety of this offseason anywhere in any
- 7:29Speaker 1: anywhere and everywhere that you saw or heard me. I
- 7:32Speaker 1: was talking about worries for the run defense with how
- 7:34Speaker 1: they built this defense, Worries about what could happen to
- 7:37Speaker 1: the offense if they didn't have true bucket getters on
- 7:39Speaker 1: the outside and or vertical presence or downfield presence in
- 7:42Speaker 1: the offense. How everything could kind of just off of
- 7:45Speaker 1: those two pain points. And we're going to talk about
- 7:47Speaker 1: a couple more aside from that in this episode, but
- 7:49Speaker 1: just how those two pain points aload alone could compound
- 7:52Speaker 1: and make everything worse and scary for this team. And
- 7:56Speaker 1: I talked about you know guys they brought in, and
- 7:58Speaker 1: how they weren't really addressing or answering certain problems they
- 8:01Speaker 1: had from last year. I talked about all these worrisome
- 8:03Speaker 1: things and so many of as William says, the Bills
- 8:08Speaker 1: a broken and fire McDermott, that's funny. So many of
- 8:10Speaker 1: the things that I talked about is like this could
- 8:12Speaker 1: be really worrisome, and they haven't addressed this. This could
- 8:14Speaker 1: be a problem. So many of those things have come
- 8:15Speaker 1: to fruition, and it's annoyed the hell out of me
- 8:19Speaker 1: to the point that I found myself sitting here after
- 8:21Speaker 1: this Texans game, or sitting there after the Texans game,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and I just thought that game was such a representation
- 8:29Speaker 1: and you could say this about several games this year,
- 8:30Speaker 1: but I thought it was such a good representation and
- 8:32Speaker 1: microcosm of the struggles of this team on both sides
- 8:38Speaker 1: of the ball. In one game, you saw what the
- 8:44Speaker 1: run defense struggles lead to and how that's tied to
- 8:47Speaker 1: who they brought in and what their roster building and
- 8:49Speaker 1: philosophy and identity is. On the defensive side of the ball.
- 8:52Speaker 1: We saw the other side of the ball and the
- 8:54Speaker 1: offense as we've been seeing for weeks on weeks, where
- 8:57Speaker 1: you have defense that continue to just creep up and
- 9:03Speaker 1: creep up and stack the middle and stack in between
- 9:05Speaker 1: the numbers and the boundaries because they are not fearful
- 9:08Speaker 1: of getting beat on the outside or getting beat vertical.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And we've seen how that's comed up the works for
- 9:12Speaker 1: the offense. Everything has just been creeping up little by little.
- 9:14Speaker 1: At the Texans game, I felt like was such a
- 9:16Speaker 1: culmination of all those things, and I found myself frustrated
- 9:22Speaker 1: in a way that I did I had not been
- 9:24Speaker 1: in a very long time. Even with thirteen seconds, I
- 9:27Speaker 1: was sad more than I was angry. I was truly
- 9:30Speaker 1: sad when they lost in thirteen seconds. And I haven't
- 9:33Speaker 1: been angry like that with the Bills in a very
- 9:37Speaker 1: long time, or even sports like It takes a lot
- 9:41Speaker 1: for me still to get like angry. I think the
- 9:42Speaker 1: angries I haven't been. The three angriest things I've been
- 9:47Speaker 1: in There are times in sports of the last year.
- 9:49Speaker 1: If anyone cares, this Bill's lost to Houston, which may seem,
- 9:52Speaker 1: you know, small compared to their playoff losses, but the
- 9:55Speaker 1: Bills lost against Houston. I'm a Barcelona fan, so they're
- 9:58Speaker 1: lost in the semi finals of the Champions League, and
- 10:00Speaker 1: the second leg against Inter Milan angered me. And then
- 10:04Speaker 1: the Red Sox trading Rafael Devers. Those are the three
- 10:07Speaker 1: angriest things I've been in the last year, and this
- 10:09Speaker 1: Bill's one. I just haven't been this angry with or
- 10:11Speaker 1: about the Bills in a very very long time. And
- 10:13Speaker 1: I found myself up until oh, I don't remember Thursday
- 10:18Speaker 1: night Friday morning, just angry, knowing I had to go
- 10:21Speaker 1: to bed to get up for work and finish the week.
- 10:24Speaker 1: But I was just frustrated, and I know a lot
- 10:25Speaker 1: of you folks are frustrated, and it was just absolutely
- 10:30Speaker 1: palpable how frustrated I was with this team. And so
- 10:34Speaker 1: that caused me to kind of really not unleash, but
- 10:37Speaker 1: really unravel and kind of dive in a little bit
- 10:40Speaker 1: to the pain points of this team, because I do
- 10:43Speaker 1: think it is I don't think what we're seeing is
- 10:46Speaker 1: due to any one thing. I don't think the problems
- 10:49Speaker 1: that we're seeing are on a small scale. I think
- 10:53Speaker 1: the struggles we're seeing on both sides of the ball
- 10:55Speaker 1: are large scale. They are systemic. They start from the
- 10:59Speaker 1: top down positive you know, I think a lot of
- 11:01Speaker 1: things start from the top down positively and negatively. But
- 11:04Speaker 1: a lot of these pain points start from the top.
- 11:06Speaker 1: They are woven in through the fabric and identity of
- 11:09Speaker 1: this team schematically individually from a roster standpoint, And so
- 11:13Speaker 1: I think we should talk about those things. And I'm
- 11:15Speaker 1: gonna go through the comments now as we do, and
- 11:16Speaker 1: then we'll start to dive into those topics on this episode.
- 11:19Speaker 1: So we can all be angry together? Also happy Thanksgiving?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Oh and I moved my hands too much. The camera
- 11:24Speaker 1: went out of focus. This is just everybody's everything just
- 11:28Speaker 1: wants to make me angry. Fantastic, I'm gonna stand up.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Hopefully the camera comes back and to refocus. There we go.
- 11:31Speaker 1: There's the trick. We'll start with some comments here again
- 11:34Speaker 1: super chats. Feel free to put them throughout the episode. Questions, thoughts, comments,
- 11:36Speaker 1: concerns throughout the episode. But as we do here on
- 11:38Speaker 1: the show, we'll start with some comments and thoughts from
- 11:40Speaker 1: the live chat, and then we'll start to get into
- 11:42Speaker 1: the meat of the episode. John, I just want to
- 11:44Speaker 1: grab this because I saw John says too young for
- 11:46Speaker 1: the Music City Miracle. I was a little tike for
- 11:49Speaker 1: the Music City Miracle, but I was more just shocked
- 11:53Speaker 1: than anything. I As I've gotten older, I'm angry. I
- 11:58Speaker 1: thought it was a forward pass and I couldn't believe
- 12:00Speaker 1: that everybody and their mother. Even as a little kid,
- 12:03Speaker 1: I was like, why is everybody running after Frank? Whychick Frank?
- 12:05Speaker 1: Whycheck running to the sideline? Clearly he's not going anywhere.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Why are we all selling out for Frank? Wicheck and Also,
- 12:12Speaker 1: I think my frustration started higher at the beginning because
- 12:18Speaker 1: I couldn't understand how Doug Flutie wasn't started. Obviously we
- 12:22Speaker 1: know why, you know, years later, and Ralph Wilson being
- 12:24Speaker 1: the one to make that call. I was so confused.
- 12:27Speaker 1: This is like a little kid. I just remember Fluty
- 12:29Speaker 1: getting the Bills so much and doing so much and
- 12:32Speaker 1: changing so much, and how good their defense was, and
- 12:35Speaker 1: I was so confused and angry to start the game
- 12:39Speaker 1: that you know, Flutie wasn't playing. And then Johnson still
- 12:42Speaker 1: kind of gets it done. He loses his shoe, still
- 12:44Speaker 1: scrambles for a first down. So the musicity miracle. As
- 12:47Speaker 1: I've gotten older, I've gotten angry with it. But at
- 12:48Speaker 1: the time I was more just shocked and sad than anything.
- 12:53Speaker 1: At that time, I'm gonna work my way back when
- 12:57Speaker 1: grabbing these, I'm just gonna sound first, Joe says. I
- 12:59Speaker 1: view organizational direction and coaching philosophy like a piece of gum.
- 13:04Speaker 1: It starts out great but loses its flavor as you chew.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I think the Bills need to get a new piece,
- 13:09Speaker 1: maybe spearmint this time. I think that's a pretty good analogy.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I like that I like that. I like that. I
- 13:14Speaker 1: like that. You know it goes great with spearmctgum one
- 13:17Speaker 1: PI pizza. Sorry, Joe, I'm just kidding. Jose in the
- 13:21Speaker 1: beginning of the episode says, Brandon Cook's good waiver wire pickup.
- 13:23Speaker 1: We are going to talk about Brandon Cooks in this episode.
- 13:26Speaker 1: My shorthand thoughts right now, meh, But we'll get into
- 13:30Speaker 1: that a little bit. And Joe at the beginning said
- 13:33Speaker 1: drop a lke for and even though he bullies me
- 13:35Speaker 1: over pizza choices. Yeah, that's fair, but I mean you
- 13:39Speaker 1: did yourself. Cam Moorey says he spotted h climb, Mario
- 13:42Speaker 1: Addison and Levi Wallace at Duff's not Great, Jose says,
- 13:46Speaker 1: why can't buffalo you? Shakir correctly, I want to this.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I think this is a fair point. But also I
- 13:53Speaker 1: don't think the notion of the wide receiver screens and
- 13:55Speaker 1: everything he gets in and around the line of scrimmage
- 13:57Speaker 1: is super crazy. Like his best skill set, that best attribute,
- 14:01Speaker 1: best trade, however you verbalize it or view that is
- 14:04Speaker 1: getting the ball in his hands and just doing work
- 14:06Speaker 1: so the quicker you can get the ball in his hands.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I understand that notion right, like, let's get it to
- 14:10Speaker 1: him quick, Let's get blockers out in front of him,
- 14:12Speaker 1: Let's essentially treat him like a running back at the
- 14:14Speaker 1: wide receiver position. Get the ball to him, and then
- 14:17Speaker 1: we'll kind of go from there. I think the issue
- 14:20Speaker 1: with it is it's gotten just too predictable, and honestly,
- 14:23Speaker 1: even there's other times where the numbers are favorable and
- 14:25Speaker 1: Alan isn't isn't hitting the screen, He's doing something else.
- 14:28Speaker 1: But I do think he can work down field a
- 14:30Speaker 1: bit more. I do think he can work into the intermediate,
- 14:32Speaker 1: you know, the I would say the high underneath to
- 14:35Speaker 1: load amid intermediate. I don't think he's a field stretcher.
- 14:37Speaker 1: He's not some guy that's gonna win vertical and do
- 14:39Speaker 1: a bunch of stuff there. But I do think he
- 14:41Speaker 1: is a guy who can work on digs and get
- 14:43Speaker 1: more slants and get some outbreakers, some option routes. I
- 14:46Speaker 1: do think he obviously can do more than just what
- 14:48Speaker 1: he's doing. But I don't hate. Sorry if anybody sees
- 14:51Speaker 1: me do this is because the camera I'm moving too
- 14:53Speaker 1: much out of my frustration and the cameras doesn't focus.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I don't think he's you know, completely being used incorrectly,
- 14:58Speaker 1: especially with what his average depth the target was last
- 15:00Speaker 1: year at certain points. But I do think just siloing
- 15:06Speaker 1: him so much to that role in theory and in
- 15:09Speaker 1: you know, kind of all practicality. With how it's gone on,
- 15:11Speaker 1: it's pretty frustrating. Charles says, he's here to pay the bills.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I like that. Oh, Connor says it has to start
- 15:17Speaker 1: with twenty twenty three in the Digs trade. Oh funny, funny,
- 15:23Speaker 1: funny how things come full circle. And man, how how
- 15:28Speaker 1: everybody's kind of saying Sun a different to him not
- 15:30Speaker 1: saying that you have. But it's just funny seeing everybody
- 15:31Speaker 1: be upset now that Digs has gone after everybody's ready
- 15:34Speaker 1: to drag him and jettison him into the sun. William says,
- 15:37Speaker 1: maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm glad being gedn't
- 15:40Speaker 1: trade away a first plus for Waddle. The team clearly
- 15:43Speaker 1: has multiple holes with cap issues, and trading a first
- 15:45Speaker 1: seems risky. I feel like you are probably in the minority,
- 15:48Speaker 1: and as John after you says, yes, you are in
- 15:50Speaker 1: the minority, I don't think that's a crazy notion either,
- 15:55Speaker 1: because yeah, I don't think getting Wattle is something that
- 15:59Speaker 1: makes up for all the other holes. Like you do
- 16:01Speaker 1: need to fix a good chunk of things on this
- 16:03Speaker 1: team that you need draft capital for and finances for.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But I do think getting Waddle could have gone a
- 16:12Speaker 1: long way for the offense and open things up and
- 16:14Speaker 1: put you into a spot where it could help the defense.
- 16:17Speaker 1: From a game script standpoint, I would have given a
- 16:20Speaker 1: first for Wattle, even though I think he's more I
- 16:22Speaker 1: think Wattle's more of a high end two, low end one.
- 16:26Speaker 1: But he's a very good wide receiver. He's a very
- 16:28Speaker 1: good player, and his skill set would have been so
- 16:31Speaker 1: welcome in this offense. I would have done that trade.
- 16:35Speaker 1: And I say that as a person who really values
- 16:37Speaker 1: draft capital and really not giving it up unless the
- 16:41Speaker 1: value is really tremendously there. Oh, Heather says about thirteen
- 16:47Speaker 1: seconds game, after twenty minutes of silence, I turned to
- 16:50Speaker 1: my mom and said, quote, that might be as close
- 16:52Speaker 1: as we ever come to a Super Bowl. Oh God, Yeah.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Connor saying the defense feels like it's flipped. First half
- 16:59Speaker 1: of the season, pass or was good, but coverage was bad.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Now it feels like the opposite. Because of the defensive
- 17:03Speaker 1: line conundrum you know what's funny about that, I have
- 17:08Speaker 1: I put out things throughout the week and then I
- 17:11Speaker 1: retweet them so that way they're at the top of
- 17:12Speaker 1: my Twitter feed, so I can easily just grab them.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Here four episodes. Joey Bosa was a large part of
- 17:22Speaker 1: why the pass rush was really cooking early on in
- 17:24Speaker 1: the year. He was getting pressures. He was even though
- 17:26Speaker 1: he wasn't getting a ton of stacks, he was getting
- 17:28Speaker 1: QB hits. He was getting pressures, he was forcing fumbles.
- 17:30Speaker 1: He was a big difference maker up front of the Bills.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I know he's had run game struggles for folks, but
- 17:35Speaker 1: he was a big difference maker as a pass rusher.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And as he's been hurt, the pass russ productivity is
- 17:45Speaker 1: dipped a bit for this defensive line. Russou is still
- 17:47Speaker 1: putting some things up from you know, in numbers and
- 17:49Speaker 1: a metrics standpoint, but you're just not seeing the bite
- 17:52Speaker 1: and the tear from the Bills front as you were
- 17:56Speaker 1: when Bosa was really rocking. And Bosa hurt his week,
- 17:59Speaker 1: his week. He heard his wrist in Week nine against
- 18:02Speaker 1: Kansas City. Bill has also lost Michael Hoyt in that game.
- 18:05Speaker 1: So here are the Buffalo Bills pressure and sack rates
- 18:08Speaker 1: on the year and then after that Week nine game,
- 18:11Speaker 1: So on the year their fifteenth in pressure rate at
- 18:14Speaker 1: thirty four point eight percent and their ninth in sack
- 18:17Speaker 1: rate at seven point five percent. So that's on the
- 18:20Speaker 1: year thirty four point eight seven point five thirty four
- 18:24Speaker 1: point eight pressure rate, seven point five sack rate. These
- 18:27Speaker 1: are their numbers week ten, eleven, and twelve, obviously minus,
- 18:31Speaker 1: well not minus, but with Joey Bosa essentially playing with
- 18:34Speaker 1: the club and one hand, even though even though he
- 18:36Speaker 1: got rid of the club, had the wrist brace and
- 18:39Speaker 1: the tape, he's playing with one hand out there again
- 18:42Speaker 1: he got hurt in Week nine. So here's their numbers
- 18:43Speaker 1: week ten, eleven, and twelve. Week ten pressure rate thirty
- 18:47Speaker 1: three point three percent against the Dolphins, not too much
- 18:50Speaker 1: off from their thirty four point eight mark on the year,
- 18:53Speaker 1: but a sack rate of zero percent. Week eleven against
- 18:57Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pressure rate of twenty four point
- 19:00Speaker 1: two percent, a good chunk off of their season rate
- 19:03Speaker 1: of thirty four point eight percent, and their sacrate against
- 19:06Speaker 1: Tampa was three percent, so significantly lower than their seven
- 19:08Speaker 1: point five on the On the year, and then we
- 19:10Speaker 1: twelve against the Houston Texans a pressure rate of sixteen
- 19:15Speaker 1: point one percent and a sack rate of zero sixteen
- 19:20Speaker 1: point one, significantly less than their season rate of thirty
- 19:23Speaker 1: four point eight and obviously zero is much less and
- 19:26Speaker 1: worse than seven point five percent for sacrate. Their pass
- 19:29Speaker 1: rush has nose dived since Bosa has been hurt coincidentally
- 19:33Speaker 1: or not. And yeah, it's it's really starting to show
- 19:40Speaker 1: weaken and weak out. Bills are electric said struggles all
- 19:44Speaker 1: caps offensive and defensive schemes. I think the Bills talent
- 19:47Speaker 1: is being held back. I do think there's obviously schemandic issues.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I do think there's a talent discrepancy as well. I
- 19:55Speaker 1: don't think the Bills are an overly talented team, and
- 19:58Speaker 1: I think they're a team that is an overly talented
- 20:01Speaker 1: that also has schematic issues on both sides of the ball.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And that's why we're kind of getting what we're getting, Bob.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Since thirteen seconds was because of coaching. Ever since then,
- 20:11Speaker 1: it seems it's been about roster construction and cap usage.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Those areas haven't been in sync. Oh, yeah, that's fair
- 20:19Speaker 1: what Penguin Man says. Maybe if we didn't draft ten
- 20:22Speaker 1: thousand and three techts every year and just got a
- 20:24Speaker 1: nose tackle at some point, we wouldn't be the worst
- 20:26Speaker 1: run defense in the league for consecutive years. It's a
- 20:29Speaker 1: fair point. We're gonna talk about that. Oh, this is
- 20:33Speaker 1: a good comment here, but Bills went full Michael Scott
- 20:37Speaker 1: with the oh yeah, well, I'm just gonna I'm just
- 20:38Speaker 1: gonna mess to slash same body type defensive tackles, slash
- 20:42Speaker 1: ignore wide receiver even harder. Yeah, just like Michael Dayton
- 20:46Speaker 1: Pam's mom. Good times. Joey says seeing Demiico Ryans on
- 20:52Speaker 1: that interview has me so pissed the head coaches explaining
- 20:54Speaker 1: how dumb our game plan was. Was just pissed man. Yeah,
- 20:57Speaker 1: for those who don't know Demiko Ryans, he does like
- 20:59Speaker 1: a weekly sit down like podcast style interview with somebody
- 21:04Speaker 1: official for the Texans, I believe. But he talked scheme
- 21:07Speaker 1: and structure and a lot of good stuff. It's awesome
- 21:08Speaker 1: to see. And what Joey here is referencing is Dimigo
- 21:11Speaker 1: Ryan's talking about all the five man protections that Houston
- 21:15Speaker 1: saw against the Bills and how that was surprising because
- 21:17Speaker 1: they usually don't get a lot of that. They get
- 21:19Speaker 1: teams that go more six and more even seven man
- 21:22Speaker 1: protections to deal with their front and how the Bills
- 21:25Speaker 1: didn't do that and how they thought that was a
- 21:27Speaker 1: bit surprising, and what's also fun if you watch the
- 21:29Speaker 1: film room, we talked about how not only were the
- 21:31Speaker 1: Bills wing with a lot of five man protections, but
- 21:33Speaker 1: they were going with five man protections where they would
- 21:36Speaker 1: use one of their guards to kind of jump out
- 21:38Speaker 1: or meet the spy. For the Texans defense, sometimes it
- 21:41Speaker 1: was Henry to Toe, most of the time it was
- 21:43Speaker 1: Aushi here number zero. So essentially you get like the
- 21:47Speaker 1: four down front plus that aggressive spy on the snap,
- 21:51Speaker 1: Edwards or Torrance would jump out to meet that spy
- 21:55Speaker 1: who's just spying for Allen, So you would take that
- 21:58Speaker 1: guard out of the protection and essentially just create even
- 22:02Speaker 1: more one on one so instead of you know, five
- 22:05Speaker 1: offensive linemen for four rushers, it would be four offensive
- 22:08Speaker 1: linemen for four rushers. So you literally just went one
- 22:11Speaker 1: on one man for man against one of the best
- 22:14Speaker 1: fronts in football with probably the best edge rushing duo
- 22:17Speaker 1: in the league, with Spencer Brown having one arm and
- 22:21Speaker 1: getting hurt more throughout the game and leaving him in there.
- 22:24Speaker 1: It just it was just Yeah, the game planning was
- 22:29Speaker 1: was awful. We're all going to talk about that a
- 22:30Speaker 1: bit in this episode as well. It's yes, it's not good,
- 22:34Speaker 1: Roberts says, even with Cook, it's about creativity, which Brady
- 22:36Speaker 1: Hashoni cannot do. Should bring Dable back as passing coordinator
- 22:40Speaker 1: or interim Ooh, I have reservations about Dable, but I
- 22:43Speaker 1: understand the thought there. Charles says, as a Bills fan
- 22:47Speaker 1: that went through the drought era, it's tough. I love
- 22:49Speaker 1: all the division titles, but we have to get at
- 22:51Speaker 1: least one with Josh. No matter what, I just want one.
- 22:53Speaker 1: No matter what, I don't care who's the quarterback. I
- 22:55Speaker 1: don't care how it comes. I just want one super
- 22:57Speaker 1: Bowl before I leave this earth. Man, I I just
- 23:00Speaker 1: want one. I just want one. Jeffrey says, ore OC
- 23:06Speaker 1: and DC have no answers. Dable and Fraser could figure
- 23:08Speaker 1: it out, and players always got better. These players have peaked.
- 23:12Speaker 1: No one is getting better. I think some players are
- 23:14Speaker 1: getting better, but I feel your notion on you know,
- 23:16Speaker 1: the current coaching staff not being to the level that
- 23:21Speaker 1: you want them to be. I also think it's funny.
- 23:25Speaker 1: And I'm not saying you're this person, Jeffrey, but I
- 23:28Speaker 1: think in the same line of like the digs common
- 23:30Speaker 1: from earlier, it's funny to see how like in the moment,
- 23:32Speaker 1: like I remember so many people hated Fraser and Dable
- 23:34Speaker 1: and wanted them gone, like similarly to kind of how
- 23:36Speaker 1: people are calling for Joe Brady's head. People are doing
- 23:39Speaker 1: that for Dable and Fraser. It's funny, like time heals
- 23:42Speaker 1: all wounds, and the further you get from things it's
- 23:45Speaker 1: just or the further you get away from the emotion
- 23:48Speaker 1: of it, more perspective comes in and you're able to
- 23:51Speaker 1: kind of see things clear. And I think, you know,
- 23:54Speaker 1: I see people. You're not the only one in saying this, Jeffrey.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I see people on Twitter talking about Gable and Fraser,
- 23:59Speaker 1: people saying that I'm Blue Sky too, Like I get
- 24:00Speaker 1: those comments in addition to the dig stuff. It's just
- 24:03Speaker 1: it's funny how everything comes around and you have time
- 24:05Speaker 1: heals all wounds or as perspective, however you want to
- 24:07Speaker 1: view it. Penguin Man says, I feel like pretty much
- 24:12Speaker 1: the entire team is just filled with men from Basic
- 24:14Speaker 1: and Predictable schemes to drafting players that don't have the
- 24:16Speaker 1: highest ceilings and fit into the same mold. I love
- 24:19Speaker 1: that comment. That's a good one. We're gonna keep going
- 24:21Speaker 1: with it. Oh, a really good comment here. So talking
- 24:23Speaker 1: about the Thanksgiving tree looking good, Thank very much. I
- 24:25Speaker 1: really like this garland. It's like orangeih and reddish, very
- 24:28Speaker 1: fall like, it's got some different colored leaves on it.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I'm really digging it should be for next week. I'll
- 24:34Speaker 1: probably take the little tree and move it, you know,
- 24:37Speaker 1: and then have the bigger Christmas tree with the white
- 24:41Speaker 1: fake snow on it probably there, so we'll probably update
- 24:44Speaker 1: that for the background next week. We'll see, we'll see,
- 24:47Speaker 1: we'll see, we'll see. Joey says McDermott has destroyed our
- 24:50Speaker 1: powerful offense. We were a high flying, NonStop locomotive and
- 24:52Speaker 1: now we're driving aprius. I don't think this was all McDermott.
- 24:56Speaker 1: I don't, And I also think the changes they made
- 24:59Speaker 1: were To talk about this more later, but I think
- 25:01Speaker 1: the change in direction that they made offensively made a
- 25:04Speaker 1: ton of sense. The best offenses in the NFL were
- 25:08Speaker 1: operating off of running the football, condensed formations, bigger body
- 25:12Speaker 1: types to kind of blur the lines between the run
- 25:14Speaker 1: and the past. You saw these teams going into that world. Hell,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I mean, for everybody who's talking about oh Man, like
- 25:21Speaker 1: I love what mcveigh's doing in the Rams offense. I
- 25:23Speaker 1: see this a lot from Bills fans. It's understandable, you know,
- 25:26Speaker 1: and not even just Bills fans, but most fan bases,
- 25:29Speaker 1: especially if your team is struggling. All the love for
- 25:31Speaker 1: McVeigh this year, and all the love for Clint Kobiak,
- 25:34Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator for Seattle. Both of those teams use
- 25:37Speaker 1: heavy personnel and don't go spread a ton. The Rams
- 25:41Speaker 1: are using thirteen personnel a bunch. The Seahawks are using
- 25:45Speaker 1: what twenty two, twenty one and twelve like, they're using
- 25:48Speaker 1: aj Barner and Elijah Royo is tight ends, they're using
- 25:51Speaker 1: a true full back, they're going under cent or drop
- 25:54Speaker 1: back like. Their run game isn't good, but people see
- 25:57Speaker 1: the throws and the explosives to JSN and some of
- 26:01Speaker 1: the stuff with Cup and their passing game is good.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But a lot of the best offense this was years ago,
- 26:06Speaker 1: started moving towards condensed formations. Their reducing their formational with
- 26:11Speaker 1: weaponizing twelve personnel bigger bodied eleven personnel. Again, the Rams
- 26:16Speaker 1: were kind of at the forefront of that too. The
- 26:17Speaker 1: Rams and the Lions several years ago that kind of
- 26:20Speaker 1: were in the forefront of this movement. The Rams had
- 26:22Speaker 1: Puoka and Cup and like to DeMarcus Robinson was last year.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I forget who was there wide receiver three a couple
- 26:30Speaker 1: of years ago, but both of those receivers, Cup and
- 26:32Speaker 1: Pooka could block their butts off. And then you go
- 26:34Speaker 1: to Detroit a couple of years ago and it was like,
- 26:36Speaker 1: I'm on Ross Saint Brown, Josh Reynolds at wide receiver, dude,
- 26:40Speaker 1: and I'm on Ros Sick. Obviously he's a great pass
- 26:42Speaker 1: catcher and route runer. He's a dog as a blocker.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Josh Reynolds was this bigger, bodied, thicker type of wide
- 26:47Speaker 1: receiver that could catch a little bit, but also could
- 26:50Speaker 1: mash nickel corners and safeties. The Bills changing their offense
- 26:54Speaker 1: offensive identity in twenty twenty four was very much in
- 26:57Speaker 1: line with league trends. The best and better offenses in
- 27:00Speaker 1: the league all moved in that direction. They went away
- 27:03Speaker 1: from spreading them out chuck it thirty to forty times
- 27:05Speaker 1: a game and a lot of them move towards again
- 27:08Speaker 1: reducing formational with getting the run involved tying it together,
- 27:12Speaker 1: marrying it with the pass, and winning with personnel and
- 27:16Speaker 1: formation and alignment. The issue with the Bills is they
- 27:20Speaker 1: got so predictable with that and didn't build on their
- 27:23Speaker 1: twenty twenty four and now they're kind of just dead
- 27:25Speaker 1: in the water. But that's I'm going to dive into
- 27:27Speaker 1: that further as we go forward. But this offense is
- 27:31Speaker 1: built for the modern day NFL. And it's also funny
- 27:34Speaker 1: how it's built to shred defenses like the ones they have,
- 27:37Speaker 1: and yet they chose to go with this defense conversation
- 27:39Speaker 1: for later in this episode. But yeah, I think they
- 27:41Speaker 1: moved the offense in line with league trends. They just
- 27:44Speaker 1: got so predictable and didn't build or evolve with their
- 27:48Speaker 1: initial success last year. And that's where we're seeing the
- 27:51Speaker 1: struggles that we're having. But we're going to continue to
- 27:52Speaker 1: go on. Kay moy says, So ignoring one tech for
- 27:56Speaker 1: right now, what hypothetically available wide receiver offsee and move
- 28:01Speaker 1: would have worked out? Pickens dk Adams right and wrong
- 28:04Speaker 1: answers are both welcome. Pickens is just too volatile, obviously,
- 28:08Speaker 1: He's got talent, but he's a head case. I wouldn't
- 28:10Speaker 1: have wanted Pickens DeVante Adams. I would have taken in
- 28:13Speaker 1: a heartbeat the issue I'm seeing with DeVante Adams, though.
- 28:15Speaker 1: I see some folks who were talking about, like his
- 28:17Speaker 1: cap hit this year's only like twelve million, and then
- 28:19Speaker 1: comparing that to Curtis Samuel's cap hit or Josh Palmer's
- 28:22Speaker 1: cap hit Davante Adams. I look this up, and I
- 28:25Speaker 1: want to make sure. DeVante Adams signed a two year,
- 28:30Speaker 1: forty four million dollars deal with the Rams this past offseason.
- 28:34Speaker 1: His cap hit next year is twenty eight million dollars,
- 28:38Speaker 1: so it's a bit different. I see people throwing out, oh,
- 28:40Speaker 1: look what his capit is in twenty twenty five. Yeah,
- 28:42Speaker 1: but his twenty twenty six cap hit is crazy. DeVante
- 28:45Speaker 1: Adams was the one for me now, even just because
- 28:48Speaker 1: you listened him here that I was really hoping for
- 28:50Speaker 1: a true man beater, a true craftsman. Still a very
- 28:53Speaker 1: good wide receiver, even with the miles on the tires,
- 28:56Speaker 1: and you're seeing him pay off for the Rams, like
- 28:58Speaker 1: his release package work, his stem work, his deception, his
- 29:03Speaker 1: work on the break. He's still got some He's still
- 29:05Speaker 1: got some shake and some juice to him. He doesn't
- 29:07Speaker 1: have this crazy long speed that he had in Green Bay, obviously,
- 29:10Speaker 1: but he's still got the short area burst and quickness.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Man like it would have been Adams for me. DK
- 29:16Speaker 1: I think gets a little bit temperamental, and so that
- 29:18Speaker 1: can get worrisome, especially with them coming off the Digs
- 29:21Speaker 1: fiasco and from a personality standpoint, so he wasn't gonna work.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Pickens wasn't gonna work. I think Adams was the guy
- 29:28Speaker 1: for me with what they could have done, but such
- 29:32Speaker 1: as life. R j says, an make me not sad
- 29:34Speaker 1: about this team. I'm sorry. I hope. I don't know
- 29:36Speaker 1: if I'm doing that or not, but I apologize either way.
- 29:39Speaker 1: R Jil says, Ah love the thanks, Chivintry, thank you
- 29:41Speaker 1: very much, appreciate you. Ah Bob says. The emphasis has
- 29:44Speaker 1: been to raise the floor, but the ceiling of most
- 29:46Speaker 1: isn't that much higher. Charles saying a lot of talk
- 29:51Speaker 1: about the Rams team builds stars and scrubs, but they
- 29:53Speaker 1: also missed the playoffs two times between Super Bowl appearances.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I'd take that all day. If you told me we
- 29:59Speaker 1: could get one title. But it's worth nothing. Yeah, I
- 30:00Speaker 1: would take I would sacrifice anyone in anything on the
- 30:04Speaker 1: Bills to get a Super Bowl. I would if you
- 30:06Speaker 1: told me they had to trade Josh Allen today, but
- 30:08Speaker 1: it would get them a super Bowl next year, guaranteed.
- 30:10Speaker 1: I would trade Josh Allen immediately, right now, whatever it
- 30:12Speaker 1: takes to get a super Bowl, Like, even if it
- 30:15Speaker 1: means you're terrible for the next ten years. I don't
- 30:18Speaker 1: just get one. That's me at this point. I need it.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Connor says I literally fell to my knees when a
- 30:24Speaker 1: coworker told me that Diggs was traded. Had to have
- 30:26Speaker 1: an emergency call with my brother because it felt like
- 30:28Speaker 1: someone died. Dang. Tristan says kin kid fifth year option
- 30:32Speaker 1: a guarantee given his inability to stay healthy. Oh, good question.
- 30:38Speaker 1: For me. It's not a guarantee at all. For the Bills.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I think it's closer because they kind of have to
- 30:43Speaker 1: given how they're built and their lack of other options.
- 30:46Speaker 1: But for me, no, because of his inability to stay
- 30:49Speaker 1: healthy and because he's limited in how they can use
- 30:52Speaker 1: him because of his blocking ability or inability however you
- 30:56Speaker 1: want to label it. M those are electrics. As are
- 31:00Speaker 1: for twenty twenty six is negative being needs his draft
- 31:02Speaker 1: picks as also and again twenty twenty six. So a
- 31:05Speaker 1: twenty eight million Devontae Adam's cap hit or how are
- 31:07Speaker 1: you trying to structure it was going to be a problem?
- 31:11Speaker 1: What else I'm seeing some funny things? Yeah, Kay, Maury
- 31:15Speaker 1: referendent earlier when I say when I said dip ye
- 31:17Speaker 1: had nose dive might be appropriate. That's fine, that's fair.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Tristan says, I hope Justin Jefferson wants out this offseason.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Benny says, good news. We always hit on our first
- 31:25Speaker 1: rounders and some of these negative comments are funny. I
- 31:27Speaker 1: like it. Ah, yeah, Charles talking about too Yeah, how
- 31:31Speaker 1: about Himko Ryan's in an interview saying the quiet part
- 31:33Speaker 1: out loud about the predictability on offense. I think Kayln Bullock,
- 31:37Speaker 1: the Texan safety, also said something similar about how like
- 31:41Speaker 1: everything they studied was literally what they saw in the game.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I think some of that is, you know, product of
- 31:46Speaker 1: the short week, you don't have a lot of time
- 31:47Speaker 1: to install new stuff or build. But yeah, they're just
- 31:52Speaker 1: kind of predictable. Ah, this is a good comment. Lucy
- 31:59Speaker 1: Gousey were the problems during the Houston game there when
- 32:02Speaker 1: we put up forty four on Tampa offensively, Yeah, they
- 32:06Speaker 1: were struggling to run the ball and their instructure pass
- 32:09Speaker 1: game was still wonky. Allen was just making the high
- 32:14Speaker 1: variance plays that tipped the scales. I also think they
- 32:18Speaker 1: had a little less predictability because of the Allen high
- 32:21Speaker 1: variance plays. But they struggled to run the football, and
- 32:25Speaker 1: the instructure pass stuff wasn't necessarily there. It was a
- 32:28Speaker 1: lot of yin and yang. I don't want to say
- 32:31Speaker 1: sugar hi Josh allencase. I think people think that that negatively,
- 32:34Speaker 1: But it was just those high variance plays that swung
- 32:37Speaker 1: the pendulum significantly in their favor. Not to mention, you
- 32:40Speaker 1: had a return touchdown from Ray Davis and you had
- 32:44Speaker 1: a lot of really good field position that swung some
- 32:47Speaker 1: things and changes things for you. So I think they
- 32:50Speaker 1: had a good game script to kind of work to
- 32:52Speaker 1: give the offense some success. But it really was just
- 32:54Speaker 1: those high variance plays that swung the pendulum for them
- 32:59Speaker 1: in that game. And again, Tampa's defense is banged up.
- 33:03Speaker 1: They've got some dudes that are hurt. Jameel Dean goes
- 33:05Speaker 1: down they're already missing Elijah Cansey. They don't have a
- 33:08Speaker 1: ton of outside edge, rush, presence or pop, so you
- 33:11Speaker 1: have no problem going five man protections. At times, they're
- 33:14Speaker 1: a bit slower at the second level, especially you know,
- 33:17Speaker 1: David's a little longer in the tooth. Dennis isn't a
- 33:19Speaker 1: speedy linebacker. They're nowhere near the speed in violence of
- 33:22Speaker 1: al Shayre and Henry to Toe. They don't have the
- 33:25Speaker 1: outside corners of Lasseter and Stingley. So I think there
- 33:28Speaker 1: were the problems that you solve for the Bills offense
- 33:30Speaker 1: against Houston. I do think they were still president against Tampa,
- 33:33Speaker 1: but they're magnified further when you're playing a better defense
- 33:37Speaker 1: and arguably the best corner tandem in football and arguably
- 33:40Speaker 1: the best edge tannement football. Dusty says, Harrison, Harriston and
- 33:48Speaker 1: Walker seem like they have a lot of promise. Thankfully,
- 33:50Speaker 1: Walker is going to be a stud. I hope Walker.
- 33:52Speaker 1: I don't want to be too negative. I don't think
- 33:54Speaker 1: Walker is this stud in the making that a lot
- 33:57Speaker 1: of people are making him out to be. I think
- 33:58Speaker 1: he has a lot more struggles than people care to notice.
- 34:02Speaker 1: It's funny when I post things on plays on social
- 34:06Speaker 1: and someone will notice the person next to Walker getting
- 34:08Speaker 1: blown up and call that person out, but not call
- 34:11Speaker 1: out Walker when he's getting blown blown out the gap
- 34:13Speaker 1: or turned around or knocked up field. I do think
- 34:16Speaker 1: Walker has been good this year. He has to pass
- 34:18Speaker 1: my expectations, and I do think he's improving on his
- 34:21Speaker 1: anchor and overall run defense. But I don't think he's
- 34:24Speaker 1: some game He's been some game record this year. I hope,
- 34:27Speaker 1: you know, as he gets into a proper role and
- 34:28Speaker 1: there's more around him, he'll continue to improve. But I'm
- 34:32Speaker 1: a little lower on him than others are, though I
- 34:34Speaker 1: do think he has played well. Oh. I like this
- 34:39Speaker 1: from Heather. Heather says this team has a dull blade.
- 34:43Speaker 1: That's a really good way to say it. All right,
- 34:47Speaker 1: I'm seeing going through. Oh, Jeffersons, how are you cooking
- 34:51Speaker 1: the turkey this year? I'm just straight up doing the
- 34:53Speaker 1: oven turkey. I am doing my wife has done the
- 34:55Speaker 1: turkey in the past. I am doing the turn walk.
- 34:56Speaker 1: We've combined. I'm doing the turkey this year. I've done
- 34:59Speaker 1: deep frying in the past, not doing that this year.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I'm okay with the deep fry. I know some people
- 35:04Speaker 1: like swear by it. I'm really just a standard. You know,
- 35:08Speaker 1: let's season the hell out of it, rocking the butter
- 35:11Speaker 1: and all my herbs and seasoning and all that stuff,
- 35:14Speaker 1: getting a good rub in there, taking care of it.
- 35:16Speaker 1: But I'm really just a simple like season it, make
- 35:19Speaker 1: sure it stays moist. I hate that word. I think
- 35:22Speaker 1: cook it regularly, like in the oven. I'm not a
- 35:23Speaker 1: crazy like let's deep fry it or flash whatever. I
- 35:25Speaker 1: know there's a lot of science to cooking turkeys. I'm
- 35:28Speaker 1: a very simple season it properly, get in the oven,
- 35:31Speaker 1: let that bird bake and rock from there. Oh this
- 35:36Speaker 1: is a good comment here, uh say, I'm becausing you say.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Meeting Joe Marino had a good observation earlier, saying beanus
- 35:42Speaker 1: focused more on the floor than the ceiling in terms
- 35:44Speaker 1: of roster construction to a degree. I think Walker is
- 35:48Speaker 1: a ceiling pick. I think Harston's a ceiling pick. I
- 35:52Speaker 1: think Greg Russeau was a ceiling pick. I think Coole
- 35:55Speaker 1: Bishop was a ceiling pick. Free agents, I think it's
- 36:01Speaker 1: more floor. I'd have to think of it, uh all
- 36:05Speaker 1: the time of my head, but that's fair. That's interesting comment. Uh,
- 36:12Speaker 1: like it's comment and when are you getting a third tree?
- 36:13Speaker 1: The Bills haven't won a Super Bowl since you only
- 36:15Speaker 1: have two come January. Also, maybe it's not me I
- 36:18Speaker 1: need to get a third tree. I like that. I
- 36:20Speaker 1: like this comments has hit that like yes, please likes
- 36:22Speaker 1: tore the lifeblood of these streams. Please please please and
- 36:24Speaker 1: think you hit drop a leg if you have not already. Yes,
- 36:28Speaker 1: and so the ends These two comments won from Dusty
- 36:30Speaker 1: saying the Bills offense last season was pretty good, but
- 36:32Speaker 1: then the comment right after saying they caught up to
- 36:34Speaker 1: us because we didn't change. That's exactly it, and that's
- 36:36Speaker 1: what we're going to dive into after I get through
- 36:37Speaker 1: some more comments here. Question, do you buy the notion
- 36:42Speaker 1: circling the fan base right now that being in McDermott
- 36:44Speaker 1: are bottom five or ten in the league. I think
- 36:46Speaker 1: that's crazy. But is there a light I'm not seeing here? No,
- 36:49Speaker 1: I definitely don't think they're a bottom five or ten.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I think McDermott and being are death easily top half
- 36:54Speaker 1: of the league. And like coach and GM individually and duo,
- 36:57Speaker 1: it's just a matter of if they do enough to
- 36:59Speaker 1: get you over the time or if they're built to
- 37:01Speaker 1: more get you out of a rut than they are
- 37:04Speaker 1: get you over the top and get a championship. I
- 37:08Speaker 1: do think on the whole, beans moves have been sound
- 37:10Speaker 1: and ben solid, especially a free agency, Like, it's not
- 37:12Speaker 1: his fault Von Miller towards ACL and that wrecked their
- 37:15Speaker 1: plans for that year. It's not his fault. Trey White
- 37:17Speaker 1: tore his ACL the year before. It's not their fault
- 37:23Speaker 1: that Bosa got banged up this year. Now you could say, well,
- 37:25Speaker 1: it is their fault a little bit because they haven't
- 37:27Speaker 1: got brought the right guys in at those premium positions
- 37:29Speaker 1: to kind of butchers that, YadA YadA. You can play
- 37:31Speaker 1: devil's advocate for a lot of it. But no, I
- 37:33Speaker 1: don't think. I don't think they're bottom five to ten
- 37:35Speaker 1: in the league at all. I just don't think they're
- 37:38Speaker 1: top five. I think they're probably around for me like
- 37:42Speaker 1: fifteen to twelve, somewhere in that range borderline top ten.
- 37:46Speaker 1: If I wanted to really broad brush it, I'd say
- 37:48Speaker 1: like fifteen to eight. What else we got? What else
- 37:55Speaker 1: we got? What else we got? Okay, oh we got
- 38:01Speaker 1: super chat So sorry, really appreciate you being here, Brad
- 38:07Speaker 1: at guitar. I think they can pronouncing that correctly if
- 38:09Speaker 1: I'm reading everything correctly, everything being lowercases throwing me. But
- 38:11Speaker 1: I appreciate you being here. Thank you very much with
- 38:13Speaker 1: the super chet and the comment or question I should say,
- 38:15Speaker 1: is any of the current long term commitments you think
- 38:18Speaker 1: will age poorly based on opportunity cost. The one that
- 38:25Speaker 1: comes to the forefront of my mind is Rousseau because
- 38:28Speaker 1: while I like him and I think he gets a
- 38:30Speaker 1: lot more hate than he deserves, I think they paid
- 38:33Speaker 1: him like an edge one, and I don't think he's
- 38:35Speaker 1: truly an edge one because of what he is as
- 38:38Speaker 1: a pass rusher, and I know some of the metrics
- 38:40Speaker 1: show well for him at times, but I just don't
- 38:42Speaker 1: think he's an edge one as a pass rusher. So
- 38:45Speaker 1: if he doesn't continue to improve in that way, you
- 38:47Speaker 1: paid a lot of money for a dude who's just
- 38:49Speaker 1: a really good run defender at the edge, and that's
- 38:51Speaker 1: a lot of money for that. I think Bernards could
- 38:56Speaker 1: look bad. I do think a lot of his struggles
- 38:59Speaker 1: this year are because of his injury, but he's never
- 39:04Speaker 1: been this big, you know, take on blocks type of dude,
- 39:07Speaker 1: complete linebacker he has to succeed in a very in
- 39:10Speaker 1: a very specific manner, and that could get worrisome. I
- 39:14Speaker 1: think as that contract ages. I think Benford's contract is fine.
- 39:17Speaker 1: He's not too expensive at all, and I don't think
- 39:19Speaker 1: he's been as bad as people are giving him. Flat
- 39:21Speaker 1: for Shakir's contract is fine, but the biggest one for
- 39:24Speaker 1: me out of the ones they especially like the ones
- 39:26Speaker 1: they committed to recently. For me, it would be Rousseau
- 39:29Speaker 1: if he doesn't continue to improve and kind of become
- 39:32Speaker 1: more of a true overall edge one. And I think
- 39:36Speaker 1: Bernard just based off of how specific the ecosystem has
- 39:40Speaker 1: to be for his success. Yes, as Joe says, we
- 39:45Speaker 1: need some more creativity and tendency breaking. Absolutely absolutely, Jason says,
- 39:54Speaker 1: please tell me that lamp on your right the wife
- 39:56Speaker 1: put there. No, I put that lamp there. I like
- 39:58Speaker 1: that lamp. This one, yeah, that Oh, I'm so terrible
- 40:01Speaker 1: at this. That one. Yeah, I put that there. It
- 40:04Speaker 1: used to be on my grandma's I like that lamp. Yeah.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I look a good deep right turkey with the side
- 40:09Speaker 1: of house fire. That's why I don't do it. I've
- 40:11Speaker 1: heard too many horror stories, but I like the deep
- 40:13Speaker 1: fried turkey, but it wasn't enough for me to risk
- 40:15Speaker 1: burning everything down. Okay, okay, okay, okay. I'm going to
- 40:23Speaker 1: dive into some of the topics here. This first one
- 40:24Speaker 1: that I want to talk about, and feel free continue
- 40:26Speaker 1: to put in comments. I'll get to everything as we
- 40:28Speaker 1: can go. This first one that I'm gonna talk about
- 40:30Speaker 1: here is the run defense. I I've talked about this
- 40:34Speaker 1: before throughout the off season. I've talked about it throughout
- 40:39Speaker 1: the like in season last year and how it was
- 40:41Speaker 1: a bigger struggle and pain point that people realized. Turnovers
- 40:46Speaker 1: in game script glossed over the run defense struggle so
- 40:50Speaker 1: much for this defense, even to the point that I
- 40:52Speaker 1: remember folks telling me, like, stopping the run doesn't matter,
- 40:55Speaker 1: They're fine. Stopping the run matter is tremendously in a
- 40:58Speaker 1: vacuum as we're seeing, especially with how the league has
- 41:02Speaker 1: started to move in that direction. But as I've said before,
- 41:06Speaker 1: how you fit the run determines your coverage on the
- 41:09Speaker 1: back end. Simple example, if you have to have eight
- 41:12Speaker 1: in the box to stop the run, that means you
- 41:15Speaker 1: can only play a single high coverage. That means you
- 41:17Speaker 1: already to playing cover three. That means you are playing
- 41:19Speaker 1: cover one. It hurts how much you can disguise everything
- 41:23Speaker 1: on that back end, right, So how you fit the
- 41:24Speaker 1: run determines your coverage on the back end first and foremost.
- 41:29Speaker 1: And then with having the safeties that the Bills had,
- 41:31Speaker 1: living in a single high world was not ideal to
- 41:33Speaker 1: start the year. It's gotten better this year, but still
- 41:35Speaker 1: kind of a problem. But turnovers changed so much for
- 41:40Speaker 1: the Bills last year, and game script changed so much,
- 41:43Speaker 1: and games where teams were able to kind of stay
- 41:44Speaker 1: in even from the first game of the year against
- 41:46Speaker 1: the Cardinals, the Cardinals just kept running pin and pull
- 41:49Speaker 1: and counter and then gash the hell out of the
- 41:52Speaker 1: Bills in that opening Week one game last year in
- 41:54Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, the Bills made some course corrections adjusted
- 41:56Speaker 1: obviously got the win in that game, but that continued
- 41:59Speaker 1: throughout the rest of the year. Games where teams were
- 42:01Speaker 1: able to keep it close, more often than not, they
- 42:03Speaker 1: ran the ball successfully against the Bills. Now, I know
- 42:07Speaker 1: the idea at that point, and I think there is
- 42:08Speaker 1: some credence to this of they invite the run because
- 42:11Speaker 1: they value stopping the pass more. From a metrics standpoint
- 42:14Speaker 1: or schematic standpoint. I think there was some validity to that,
- 42:18Speaker 1: but having to use numbers and having to gap out
- 42:22Speaker 1: to stop the run last year was a problem for
- 42:24Speaker 1: the Bills, but when they did it at work. The
- 42:26Speaker 1: Lions game is a good example, right, they got run
- 42:29Speaker 1: on a ton by the Rams. Those back to back
- 42:31Speaker 1: weeks are a good good talking point for last year
- 42:34Speaker 1: they got run on a bunch by the Rams, started
- 42:37Speaker 1: to sell out and use bodies to stop the run,
- 42:39Speaker 1: which then got them gouged in the past, and then
- 42:42Speaker 1: the next week they sold out with numbers to stop
- 42:44Speaker 1: the run again, eight and sometimes nine man boxes to
- 42:47Speaker 1: stop the run. They do that against the Lions. Score early,
- 42:51Speaker 1: get up and ahead early, which stops the Lions from
- 42:55Speaker 1: running the ball. Granted, the Lions passed the ball a
- 42:57Speaker 1: ton in that game and almost came back and won,
- 42:59Speaker 1: but they when they would gap out. When I say
- 43:02Speaker 1: gap out, have a man in the box for every
- 43:04Speaker 1: gap that is present, So not just even numbers. If
- 43:07Speaker 1: there's seven blockers and you have seven defenders in the box,
- 43:11Speaker 1: you have a hat on a half, but you're short
- 43:12Speaker 1: of gap. However many blockers there are, there's one more
- 43:17Speaker 1: gap than how many blockers there are. So just think,
- 43:19Speaker 1: if you have a five man surface, you just have
- 43:21Speaker 1: the five offensive lineman, left tackle, left guard, center, right guard,
- 43:25Speaker 1: right tackle. You've got the outside shoulder of the left
- 43:29Speaker 1: tackle inside him. You just keep going all the way forward.
- 43:31Speaker 1: If you are all the way through, if you've got
- 43:33Speaker 1: five blockers, you've got six gaps. If you've got six blockers,
- 43:35Speaker 1: you've got seven gaps. So when there would be seven blockers,
- 43:40Speaker 1: which means you have eight gaps and the Bills would
- 43:41Speaker 1: have eight defenders in the box, they were good. This
- 43:44Speaker 1: year they've started to struggle with that a bit more.
- 43:46Speaker 1: They've been inconsistent with their gap integery. You've got multiple
- 43:49Speaker 1: guys in the same gap. You've got guys getting blown
- 43:51Speaker 1: out of their gaps, and it's causing issues at the
- 43:53Speaker 1: second level. So they haven't been good in their run
- 43:55Speaker 1: fits schematically, structurally or individually, and they've struggled. But turnovers
- 44:01Speaker 1: and game script mattered a lot for this team last year.
- 44:03Speaker 1: They would get run on the ball, would get moved
- 44:05Speaker 1: on them and moved up and down the field against
- 44:07Speaker 1: the Bills. Then they'd get a turnover or they'd get
- 44:10Speaker 1: a negative play. They would get a tackle for minus
- 44:12Speaker 1: three or minus four, they'd get a sack, they would
- 44:15Speaker 1: create some sort of negative play that either led to
- 44:18Speaker 1: a field goal for the offense or created a turnover.
- 44:21Speaker 1: They'd get the ball back to their offense and they'd score,
- 44:23Speaker 1: and they'd be up fourteen to nothing or fourteen to
- 44:25Speaker 1: three or twenty one to six, and before you knew it,
- 44:29Speaker 1: the opponent was like, oh, we can't keep running the ball.
- 44:31Speaker 1: So game script, turnovers and negative havoc plays were their
- 44:35Speaker 1: best friend last year, and that glossed over a lot
- 44:39Speaker 1: of the run defense struggles. We're not seeing as many
- 44:41Speaker 1: negative plays created by the defense this year. We're not
- 44:44Speaker 1: seeing those turnovers and those takeaways, and they're just getting
- 44:47Speaker 1: gashed in the run over and over again. And when
- 44:50Speaker 1: we talk about how we got here, it starts with
- 44:54Speaker 1: the positional archetypes they choose and the philosophy slash identity
- 44:59Speaker 1: they have on that side to the ball. Again, the
- 45:01Speaker 1: run defense was a problem for the Bills last year,
- 45:04Speaker 1: yet they leaned into the exact body types and positional
- 45:08Speaker 1: archetypes paired with the same philosophy and identity that wouldn't
- 45:12Speaker 1: do anything to fix the run defense. And yes, injuries
- 45:17Speaker 1: have mattered right, and the suspensions, Hoyt being suspended and
- 45:22Speaker 1: then being hurt, Ogun Joey being suspended, Ed Oliver being out,
- 45:26Speaker 1: day Kwon Jones being out, Dwayne Carter I didn't expect
- 45:29Speaker 1: much from him, but him going down. He's probably better
- 45:31Speaker 1: than the practice squad guys were bringing up, I think,
- 45:33Speaker 1: but obviously not a huge difference maker. Maybe enough to
- 45:36Speaker 1: not have Jordan Phillips on the field, who I'm not
- 45:39Speaker 1: trying to call for anyone's job or head. You can't
- 45:42Speaker 1: have Jordan Phillips on the field if there's even a
- 45:44Speaker 1: zero point one percent chance of an offense running the ball.
- 45:46Speaker 1: You can't have Jordan Phillips on the field like he
- 45:49Speaker 1: is just getting destroyed against the run. He had a
- 45:52Speaker 1: really nice pass rush rep against Houston where he drove
- 45:54Speaker 1: the left guard into Mills's face, but he's just getting
- 45:57Speaker 1: people moved a ton like. You can't have him in
- 45:59Speaker 1: there to the run. He should not be on an
- 46:01Speaker 1: NFL game day roster at this point, but he is
- 46:04Speaker 1: for the Bills for whatever God knows reason. But I
- 46:08Speaker 1: recognize the injuries have played a role on the interior. TJ.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Sanders missing time, Bernard being hurt, Mulano being hurt. I
- 46:15Speaker 1: recognize the injuries player role, but the larger conversation point
- 46:20Speaker 1: is even if the Bills were one hundred percent healthy,
- 46:25Speaker 1: especially in their spine, they were going to struggle against
- 46:28Speaker 1: the run. It wasn't going to be a matter of
- 46:31Speaker 1: if in twenty twenty five, it was always a matter
- 46:34Speaker 1: of how much. And again that's given the body types
- 46:37Speaker 1: and skill sets they have inside. You built an entire
- 46:40Speaker 1: interior out of guys who struggle against double teams, who
- 46:44Speaker 1: struggle against displacement, smaller linebackers who don't excel at getting
- 46:48Speaker 1: off blocks. That's something that's killed them this year, especially
- 46:52Speaker 1: with Bernard having you know, a knock to his lower
- 46:54Speaker 1: body and his mobility being limited. He is a sitting
- 46:58Speaker 1: duck at the second level. His strength is not stacking
- 47:01Speaker 1: and shedding and meeting offensive lineman you know, shock shed
- 47:07Speaker 1: get free. He's all about beating offensive linemen to the spot, processing,
- 47:11Speaker 1: reading and then having the mobility and the short area
- 47:14Speaker 1: closing ability and trigger to beat them to a spot,
- 47:17Speaker 1: get out in front of them, avoid the block. He
- 47:20Speaker 1: can't do that because he's playing essentially with one leg.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Dudes are getting to him, attaching to him and he's
- 47:26Speaker 1: getting wrecked. But that's symptomatic of the guys who are
- 47:29Speaker 1: healthy too. Block deconstruction as a whole is an issue
- 47:33Speaker 1: for this defense. They are bad at it. When I
- 47:36Speaker 1: say block deconstruction, I mean how you take on blocks
- 47:41Speaker 1: right the bills. Let linemen get into their chest, they
- 47:44Speaker 1: give up, you know, surface area and body type. Like
- 47:48Speaker 1: they just get they get attached to and they get maulled.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Houston was I mean, Houston's a great watch, but when
- 47:55Speaker 1: you juxtapose their defense and their block deconstruction with a
- 47:58Speaker 1: team like Houston, it's just that much more magnified. And
- 48:04Speaker 1: under a microscope. You're watching Henry Totoe and al Shayir
- 48:07Speaker 1: and EJ. Speed and even you know Jalen Reed. They're
- 48:10Speaker 1: like third or fourth string safety, let alone the defensive lineman.
- 48:14Speaker 1: You're just watching them attack blockers violently. They're using their hands,
- 48:20Speaker 1: they are moving, they are they are shocked that it's
- 48:24Speaker 1: stack and shed, shock and shed as they're reading the
- 48:27Speaker 1: track and they're moving. Their hands are in sync and
- 48:29Speaker 1: in unison with their feet. They're attacking blockers. They are
- 48:33Speaker 1: bringing violence. It's clinical and violent at the same time.
- 48:37Speaker 1: You're not getting that from the Bills really anywhere across
- 48:41Speaker 1: the board on the in their spine, as Joey says,
- 48:44Speaker 1: Lastater coming in and shooting gaps, God Lassiter, Kamari Lassiter
- 48:48Speaker 1: coming in and just blowing up Reggie Gilliam twice on
- 48:52Speaker 1: those blast counters is absolute beauty. He weighs one hundred
- 48:55Speaker 1: and eighty pounds, Gillium is two forty four and Gilliam's
- 48:58Speaker 1: hitting him like he ran into a brick wall and
- 49:02Speaker 1: that was last year, just coming in, bringing his shoulder
- 49:04Speaker 1: and shutting the door. Right, that's not necessarily a blocked
- 49:07Speaker 1: EQ while he's blowing up the block, but it's not
- 49:08Speaker 1: really blocked deconstruction like the rest of their guys, even
- 49:11Speaker 1: their backup interior dudes again getting their hands evolve, not
- 49:14Speaker 1: letting guys get to their chest, get to their body,
- 49:16Speaker 1: lean into them, create, lean and push and drive. They're
- 49:20Speaker 1: just stacking and shedding and using their hands and being
- 49:22Speaker 1: a pain in the butt to block. You don't get
- 49:25Speaker 1: that with the Bills. Their block deconstruction as a whole
- 49:28Speaker 1: was always going to be an issue for this team,
- 49:30Speaker 1: as was their inability to just overall get off blocks
- 49:34Speaker 1: and struggle against displacement. For those who don't know what
- 49:36Speaker 1: displacement means, I just mean getting blown off the ball,
- 49:41Speaker 1: right like getting If you're sitting in this gap and
- 49:45Speaker 1: you get knocked over two more gaps, you got displaced.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Or if you're sitting at the thirty five and the
- 49:50Speaker 1: double team knocks you back to the forty, you got displaced.
- 49:53Speaker 1: This place is just an easier word for me to
- 49:55Speaker 1: say for getting blown off the ball. The bills get
- 49:58Speaker 1: blown off the ball, a bunch left right backwards. It happens.
- 50:01Speaker 1: It's a problem, and that was always going to be
- 50:04Speaker 1: an issue this year because of who they have on
- 50:06Speaker 1: the interior. Larry Ogen Jobi is not some anchor against
- 50:10Speaker 1: the run. Ed Oliver actually is pretty decent at it now,
- 50:12Speaker 1: especially considering his size, but that wears on him a lot.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Daikwon Jones has miles on the tires, and even as
- 50:19Speaker 1: we've seen Ed goes out, Daiquon starts playing three tech
- 50:23Speaker 1: and does pretty sweet at it. You know why because
- 50:25Speaker 1: even Daikwon Jones, who's there starting one tech or was
- 50:28Speaker 1: supposed to be their starting one tech, he's still more
- 50:30Speaker 1: of a three tech player. So he's more of a
- 50:33Speaker 1: three tech and he's still kind of a good anchor
- 50:36Speaker 1: and he reads blocking skins. But he's a little older,
- 50:38Speaker 1: he's got miles on the tires, he's got injury concerns.
- 50:41Speaker 1: He gets hurt. Larry Ogen Joby has never been an
- 50:43Speaker 1: anchorer or a guy who can stand up against a
- 50:45Speaker 1: double team. TJ. Sanders was not that guy. Dion Walker
- 50:48Speaker 1: is not that guy, although he's arguably been the best
- 50:52Speaker 1: at it out of everybody in the interior this year,
- 50:54Speaker 1: which is crazy to say their run defense is always
- 50:57Speaker 1: going to be an issue. But then I keep going
- 51:01Speaker 1: back to the draft rumor of Tileek Williams, defensive tackle
- 51:06Speaker 1: from Ohio State who has gone to the Lions. One
- 51:08Speaker 1: tech plugger, athletic. I think he can play a little
- 51:11Speaker 1: bit on third down and give you some juice to
- 51:13Speaker 1: knock some dudes back. But he is more of a
- 51:15Speaker 1: run stopper than he is anything. And he says that
- 51:19Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills told him if he was there in
- 51:21Speaker 1: round one, they were going to take him. He gets
- 51:24Speaker 1: taken one pick before by the Detroit Lions. The Bills
- 51:27Speaker 1: end up taking Max Harston, but it's so funny that
- 51:30Speaker 1: they were going to take Tydleek Williams. In a thought
- 51:33Speaker 1: where you're like, okay, they do want more of that
- 51:35Speaker 1: one tech. Okay, So we're sitting there on day two,
- 51:38Speaker 1: maybe they go Alfred Collins. Maybe they're looking at a
- 51:41Speaker 1: bigger body, you know. On day three, maybe we're getting
- 51:43Speaker 1: a one tech and instead they go the exact opposite
- 51:46Speaker 1: direction and they get TJ. Sanders and Dion Walker. And
- 51:50Speaker 1: I wanted to read some stuff that Brandon Bean said
- 51:53Speaker 1: after night two, after rounds two and three of the draft,
- 51:56Speaker 1: when he was asked about TJ. Sanders. So after being took,
- 52:00Speaker 1: he was asked about, you know, kind of just taking
- 52:03Speaker 1: Sanders and what he thought of him as a player,
- 52:04Speaker 1: and he said, you know, quote and not that these
- 52:07Speaker 1: are all quotes from him, I just have him chopped up.
- 52:09Speaker 1: He mentioned inside rush, mentioned that he can play one tech,
- 52:14Speaker 1: but it's primarily a three tech. He liked the idea
- 52:17Speaker 1: of adding another inside rusher to pair with Ed Oliver
- 52:21Speaker 1: on clear passing downs, and we could still play him
- 52:24Speaker 1: at one tech if we wanted to. That was always questionable,
- 52:28Speaker 1: especially because he played it like two hundred ninety pounds
- 52:30Speaker 1: in college. You don't want that as a one tech.
- 52:33Speaker 1: But the idea that they saw him as that isn't
- 52:36Speaker 1: wrong for their defense, Like they their one techs are smaller,
- 52:41Speaker 1: but that's the type of interior presence and interior defensive line.
- 52:44Speaker 1: They were building a world where TJ. Sanders can be
- 52:48Speaker 1: considered a guy who can play one tech for US,
- 52:50Speaker 1: And if you watch TJ Sanders this year, he's getting
- 52:54Speaker 1: displaced like crazy. So the idea that he could play
- 52:58Speaker 1: one given his college tape and his weight and his
- 53:01Speaker 1: skill set and his trades crazy crazy, Like to me,
- 53:05Speaker 1: I didn't think that made sense at the time. I
- 53:06Speaker 1: thought it was more coach speak or gamesmanship than anything,
- 53:10Speaker 1: but it looks like it wasn't. Then. This is a
- 53:13Speaker 1: very interesting quote Bean. Right after that, he was asked
- 53:16Speaker 1: flat out about the run defense hurting from twenty twenty
- 53:19Speaker 1: four and about adding another one tech to help with that,
- 53:22Speaker 1: and how TJ. Sanders doesn't really sound like that type
- 53:25Speaker 1: of guy, and Bean's exact quote, as I'm about to read,
- 53:30Speaker 1: he says, quote again, best football player, it's harder to
- 53:35Speaker 1: find inside rush than a two down nose. Those are
- 53:38Speaker 1: easier to find. Those guys. You can go in free
- 53:41Speaker 1: agency now and find those guys with inside rush. If
- 53:45Speaker 1: you go down the pecking order of what dtackles make
- 53:49Speaker 1: those guys up top they know how to rush. Okay,
- 53:54Speaker 1: it's all about inside rush for Bean, that's his philosophy,
- 53:57Speaker 1: and I think that's McDermott's philosophy as well. And my
- 54:00Speaker 1: issue with that at the time and now is that
- 54:04Speaker 1: I don't necessarily disagree with that notion. I don't think
- 54:06Speaker 1: the idea of leaning into inside rush on the interior
- 54:11Speaker 1: is a horrible philosophy. You can still win with that.
- 54:15Speaker 1: My issue is, and as Joe says, oh really, then
- 54:19Speaker 1: where are two down run stuffers? Brandon, That ties into
- 54:22Speaker 1: my thought just because you think that like inside rush
- 54:25Speaker 1: is your way, that doesn't mean that all your guys
- 54:28Speaker 1: on the interior have to be all inside rush guys.
- 54:32Speaker 1: You don't have to go only that way, to only
- 54:36Speaker 1: that end of the spectrum to swing the pendulum all
- 54:38Speaker 1: the way to the left. You don't have to do that.
- 54:40Speaker 1: And to Joe's point, and like I have in my notes,
- 54:43Speaker 1: if two down noses are so easy to find in
- 54:47Speaker 1: free agency and you didn't get one, that to me
- 54:53Speaker 1: would mean that you didn't care to add one, because
- 54:56Speaker 1: for them, they don't value that skill set because it's
- 54:59Speaker 1: inside rush over everything. If it's so easy to get
- 55:03Speaker 1: a two down nose and you can just go find
- 55:05Speaker 1: those guys there in free agency, right, then why don't
- 55:09Speaker 1: you have one? Well, if it's easy, then that means
- 55:12Speaker 1: you probably didn't want it. If something was easier, something
- 55:15Speaker 1: was free, and you didn't grab it, you probably didn't
- 55:17Speaker 1: want it. And on top of that, again, you build
- 55:21Speaker 1: your interior purely as inside rush to win like that,
- 55:25Speaker 1: like I talked about in twenty twenty four, you need
- 55:27Speaker 1: a game script to help you out, or you need
- 55:30Speaker 1: run fits to be immaculate. You need them to be
- 55:33Speaker 1: clinical and time well and proper leverage and attacking blocks
- 55:37Speaker 1: and shedding blocks. Or you need for your interior defensive
- 55:41Speaker 1: line to be so good as rushers and penetrators that
- 55:43Speaker 1: it balances out the pure run defense displacement mitigation piece
- 55:47Speaker 1: that you don't have a good baseball analogy. And I
- 55:51Speaker 1: use this a lot, Joe, you're gonna know this one,
- 55:52Speaker 1: but I flipped it because I think it makes more sense.
- 55:55Speaker 1: If you're not gonna have any power hitters in your lineup,
- 55:58Speaker 1: so you're not gonna have any slugging percent, You're not
- 56:00Speaker 1: gonna have any home run pop dudes, and you're only
- 56:03Speaker 1: gonna go for guys who hit for average. Your lineup
- 56:06Speaker 1: better be full of dudes that are hitting three hundred
- 56:08Speaker 1: and above, and they better steal some bases. And the
- 56:11Speaker 1: Bill's interior defensive line was never going to be that.
- 56:14Speaker 1: If you're only going to build with inside rush, if
- 56:18Speaker 1: you're only thinking penetration and rush and penetration and rush
- 56:22Speaker 1: on the interior, those dudes all better be horses. They
- 56:25Speaker 1: all better be guys that are like, you know what,
- 56:28Speaker 1: everybody on the interior is gonna have like five plus sacks,
- 56:31Speaker 1: and we're gonna have a couple guys that are like
- 56:32Speaker 1: double digit sack guys. If you're gonna build that way,
- 56:36Speaker 1: they all have to be dudes on the interior like that,
- 56:39Speaker 1: because you are siloing yourself. So if you're only gonna
- 56:44Speaker 1: do one thing, it's like any anybody who plays a
- 56:47Speaker 1: video game too. If you're building your character, like if
- 56:49Speaker 1: you're not putting on armor or worrying about defense, okay, well,
- 56:53Speaker 1: then like your attack and your offense better be immaculate.
- 56:56Speaker 1: You want to be a glass cannon, then you better
- 56:58Speaker 1: be the best of glass cannons. If you're only going
- 57:02Speaker 1: to focus on this one thing, you better be a
- 57:04Speaker 1: ten out of ten out of that thing, and they
- 57:06Speaker 1: weren't going to be this year when everybody was healthy,
- 57:10Speaker 1: when everything was good. And again I know injuries have
- 57:13Speaker 1: screwed them over, but what I'm talking about, and that's funny,
- 57:16Speaker 1: Joe I cannot break down in a water polo, But
- 57:18Speaker 1: that's very funny. Even if everyone was healthy, even if
- 57:23Speaker 1: everything worked out for them on the interier and nobody
- 57:26Speaker 1: missed time or just should I shouldn't say miss time
- 57:29Speaker 1: because part of it is tied to that if everybody
- 57:32Speaker 1: was as what they wanted them or hoped they would be.
- 57:35Speaker 1: Ed Oliver at the top, he has injury concerns, but
- 57:38Speaker 1: even if you remove that, when healthy, he's a very
- 57:40Speaker 1: good player, but he struggles with inconsistency. Ed Oliver at
- 57:44Speaker 1: his best has been a game wrecker and then kind
- 57:47Speaker 1: of goes absent for three games, two games, four games.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Then he might have two where he's just a monster,
- 57:56Speaker 1: and then he goes absent for one or he goes
- 57:57Speaker 1: absent for two. Like that's the type of player he is.
- 58:00Speaker 1: He's very good, but he's not some monster on the inside.
- 58:03Speaker 1: Daikwon Jones Miles on the tires. Injury concerns there potentially
- 58:07Speaker 1: because of the age and because he's been banged up
- 58:09Speaker 1: the past couple of years. But even if he was healthy,
- 58:12Speaker 1: he's not the monster that he was in previous years.
- 58:15Speaker 1: Larry Ogunjobi is very much he is what he is.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Not a run stuffer. He's a penetrator, struggles against double teams.
- 58:24Speaker 1: He's fine. I think he's fine. It's like a rotational three,
- 58:27Speaker 1: more of like a four. To me. He is what
- 58:29Speaker 1: he is. So your top three of known quantities was
- 58:33Speaker 1: ed Oliver, Daikwon Jones, and Larry Ogunjoby, and then after
- 58:35Speaker 1: that it's two rookies and a second year Dwayne Carter.
- 58:39Speaker 1: That's what you were banking on. And Dwayne Carter was
- 58:42Speaker 1: borderline cuttable last year unfortunately, and TJ. Sanders and Dion Walker.
- 58:47Speaker 1: The odds of them coming in and just being dudes
- 58:50Speaker 1: right off rip were low because it's hard to know
- 58:53Speaker 1: that for any rookie. And that's not just like yeah,
- 58:56Speaker 1: but their skill set are they're fit. That was really
- 58:59Speaker 1: never gonna have. Like you came into the year being
- 59:01Speaker 1: like we're all about inside rush, We're all about penetration
- 59:05Speaker 1: and havoc, and then you look at who's probably gonna
- 59:07Speaker 1: be there on their line. It just didn't make sense.
- 59:11Speaker 1: That is an interior defensive line that is built to
- 59:13Speaker 1: get pushed around against the run and not good enough
- 59:16Speaker 1: to dominate with penetration and rush to make up for it.
- 59:20Speaker 1: And also I wanted to talk about something in that
- 59:22Speaker 1: quote that being said, he said at the end of
- 59:24Speaker 1: that his comment on the defensive tackle market. He said,
- 59:28Speaker 1: how guys at the top know how to rush, right
- 59:32Speaker 1: at the top of the defensive tackle market. And that's true,
- 59:35Speaker 1: But his comment is a bit disingenuous because the majority
- 59:38Speaker 1: of those dudes at the top of the defensive tackle market, yes,
- 59:42Speaker 1: they know how to rush, but they're also good run
- 59:46Speaker 1: defenders and or just monsters or complete defensive tackles in general.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Here's the top twelve defensive tackles ranked by average annual
- 59:55Speaker 1: value right now, and if you want to rank them
- 59:58Speaker 1: by total value, it's similar. Guys right at the top
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: is Chris Jones, who is more penetrator and pass rusher
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: than anything. Is not a good run defender. I'll give
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: you that right. Then you've got Milton Williams second for
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: the New England Patriots, penetrator inside rush also plays the
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: run well, did it in Philly, does it for New England?
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: And then after him, here's all the rest of the
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: dudes on that list. Even if Jones and Milt Williams
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: were pure rush and didn't offer anything from a run
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: defense standpoint, which Jones really doesn't anymore, Milt Williams does.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: Here's all the guys after them, Zach Allen, Non de
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: matabk Alim McNeil, Quinn Williams, Derek Brown, Jeffrey Simmons, Deforence Buckner,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Deron Payne, Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams. That is a ton
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: of run defense capability mixed with inside rush capability. And
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: if we continue to go down the rest of the
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: line in the top fifteen, you get similar thoughts as well.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: So yes, the dudes at the top of the defensive
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: tackle market can definitely rush the passer, they're also just
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: complete defensive tackles that are also good against the run.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Especially again, like Jones is the biggest outlier in that
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: top twelve because especially at his age too right, he's
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: more just penetrate rush QB. But in Milton Williams similar
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: in that mold, but definitely plays the run and is
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: good against the run. But everybody after that plays the
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: run really, really, really good. It's not even a question.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Zach Allen, Nomdi Madabike, Alem McNeil, Quinn, Williams, Derek Brown,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Jeffrey Simmons, DeForest Buckner, Deron Payne, Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams. Yes,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: there's some different dials and some different sliders for each guy. Right,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: some of those guys might be more run defense than
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: they are past rus. Some of those guys might be
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: more pass rush than they are run defense. But all
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: of those guys are essentially complete defensive tackles. So him saying, yeah,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: you know, if you look at the top of the
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: defensive tackle market, those guys at the top, you know,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: quote know how to rush, Yeah, they do. They also
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: know how to play the run. They also know how
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: to play the run, just like they know how to
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: play the rush. Who's at the top of the market
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: are just overall complete defensive tackles. They are very good overall.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: They are not siloed in their skill set. Now, are
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: any of those guys pure nose tackles and just pure
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: run stuffers? No, right, no, because you do need to
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: rush the passer from the inside if you want to
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: be paid like that. But if they're not deficient as
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: run defenders like the bills interior defensive line is, So
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I find that to be a bit of a problem.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: And again tying that into that whole quote, we just
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: talked about the top of the market and the inside
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: rush and those guys know how to rush, YadA YadA.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: But again going into you know, it's harder to find
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: inside rush than a two down nose. Those are easier
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: to find those guys. You can go in free agency
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: now and find those guys you didn't. You could have
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: had Roy Lopez who went to the lines, you chose
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: not to. So if it's easy to find those guys
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: and they if you had an issue with run defense,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: and it's an issue that if you had an issue
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: with run defense, and it's easy to find the guys
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: who can help you with run defense, and you choose
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: not to bring those guys in, that to me signals
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: you don't care about run defense. And then if you
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: add in the other quotes and the guys that they
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: brought in, it all signals to they didn't think they
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: needed to stop the run. Their biggest issue as a
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: defense last year, their biggest and most glaring issue as
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: a defense. They chose not to address it. They lean
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: harder to go to that joke that was mentioned earlier
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: every goody who said it though, it's Michael Scott dating
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Pam's mom in the office when she's like, Michael, I
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: forbid you from dating my mom, and he's like, you
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: know what, I'm just going to date her harder. That's
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: what the Bills defense did. You know. You know, hey
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Brandon and Shawn, you guys need to kind of get
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: after some run defense a little bit and get away
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: from some three texts. You know what, Now, I'm just
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: gonna lean into three techs harder. They built their entire
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: in tier out of that. The Daiquon Jones play this
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: year is so funny because he would again was they're
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: starting one tech and he's been good, went healthy and
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: what he's been largely for this team, Daiquon Jones has
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: been good. But him as they're starting one tech, he
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: is still more of a three tech and his skill
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: set and his size. That's the kind of that's the
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: kind of interior they built. And Dion Walker, huge mountain
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: of a man, has improved as the ear has gone
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: on in his anchor and in displacement mitigation and how
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: he handles doubles. But even him as a monster, he's
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: still a penetrator. So that's how they choose. They chose
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: to build their interior, and again that's you can choose
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: to glean that way. But the fact that they lean
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: so hard and didn't care to do anything, Like you're
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: not not even one bar of armor, You're not going
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: with any armor at all, So you just get hit
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: once with any type of weapon, you're done like that.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: You're just going pure glass cannon. Like that's extreme. And again,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: if you're gonna go pure glass cannon type of build,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: you better have weapons that you can just one hit
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: or quitter type stuff when you pop somebody. If you're
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: a boxer and you got a glass jaw and you
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: can't take a punch, you better have the deadliest uppercut
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: haymaker jabs something. And you also better be the quickest
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: dude out there so you can duck and move, dive, dip, duck,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: dive and dodge and make sure you don't get popped.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: And they don't have that. They have a glass jaw
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: and are capable of getting knocked out at any moment.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: And they also don't have a deadly haymaker or deadly uppercut,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: and they're not the quickest, and they don't have great
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: head movement and feet to avoid getting punched. Oh that's
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: a good analogy. I thought of that in the moment too.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: I should have wrote that down earlier. That's what they are.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Same thing with the baseball one. And then to Joey's
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: point is he says, and small linebackers. And then on
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: top of that again, yeah, you've got small linebackers who
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: don't excel at block deconstruction. You don't have all pro
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: dudes at the second level or big thumpers that are like,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: oh who cares if an interir offensive lineman gets through,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Our linebackers will take care of it. They can't. Even
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: when Terrell Bernard is healthy, you don't want him take
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: it on blocks because he's got short arms and he's small.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Same thing with Matt Milano. And then their technique in
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: block deconstruction is bad. So you've got guys who just
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: don't fit the run defense in any way. Like you
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: got guys in the interior on the defensive line who
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: just get pushed around and moved, and you've got guys
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: in the second level who can't get off blocks, and
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: then you've got guys in the interior and the defensive
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: line in general who also just can't get off blocks. Like,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: what do you do? And Bill's our elector, says, who
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: can talk to Sean about the roster construction and get
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: through to him. I don't think it's just about Sean McDermott.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: I think it's about being I think they are in
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: lockstep and how they want to build this team. Until
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: I hear otherwise or see otherwise. Maybe maybe McDermott wants
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: a one tech, maybe Bean wants a one tech. Maybe
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: it's one of them or neither. I don't know. I
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: don't know what happens behind closed doors, but it just
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: seems like they're lockstep and how to build this roster defensively,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: and it's causing problems for them. It caused problems for
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: them last year, it's causing problems now. And the last
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: point I'll say on this, I think it's hilarious. They
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: revamped their whole offense, right condense formations, running the football,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: bigger body types at wide receiver twelve personnel, thirteen personnel,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: twenty one, twenty two. It's all built because they saw
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: the trends in the NFL and said, you know what,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: we got to start to mash, We got to start
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: to run the ball a little bit, right. They built
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: their offense to murder defenses like theirs. So they saw
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: the trends offensively in the league and said, you know what,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: we have to build our offense to be like that.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: And then they looked at their defense and said, now
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: we'll stay the same. What you built your offense, knowing
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: how the league is trending, you pivoted completely in one offseason,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: very impressively, Like they deserve kudos for how they pivoted
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: last year and what they did. But how can you
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: build your offense in that way and then not try
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: to be the antithesis of that or build to stop
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: that defensively? If you are building an offense to run
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: the ball and mash teams, because those are the trends
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: in the league, how are you not building your defense
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: to stop the run in any way? And because that's
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: what it is. It's not just that they're not good
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: against the run, they're horrible. They're at a historic level
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: for yards after contact because they're a poor tackling team,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: but also because they can't get off blocks, because they're
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: getting displaced, because they can only get an arm or
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: a shoulder on guys at times, because they can't get
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: their full body because they can't get into the gap.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: And then they're also unsound in their technique and how
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: they're fitting the run and whether they're doing seven man
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: spacing or eight, and the coverage is on the back end,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: and it's all a mess because you just avoided run defense.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: And that's what's so frustrating with all of it is
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: they they don't need to be amazing. You don't need
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: to be top five run defense, top ten. If they
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: could be, that would be great. They just need to
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: not be thirty second to twenty eight in like everything,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: which is what they are right now, and they were.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Their metrics were decent last year, especially from like an
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: EPA standpoint, because again, the negative plays balanced it out.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: The takeaways, you know, the stuffs, the tackles for loss,
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: all that stuff kind of balanced it out. They were
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: living on the extremes. It was lived by the sword,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: die by the store. It was either get gashed and
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: give up ten or fifteen, or get a takeaway, get
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: it and get a stop for like minus three, minus four,
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: minus five. It wasn't you know, you had a lot
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: of ebbs and a lot of flows. It was. It
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: was a roller coaster. It was that this year, you're
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: not getting the balance and the roller coaster. It's all
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: just down. But that, again is a result of how
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: they built this team, because they chose to address the
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: run defense in any way, shape or form. And I
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: find that frustrating as hell, because again I'm not saying
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: I saw this happened and look at me. Talked about
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: it all off season. I said why I wanted Tayleek
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Williams more than I wanted anybody else at defensive tackle.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: I talked about why I wanted Roy Lopez, why they
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: needed to change things on the interior and who they
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: brought in and what they did and the rotational bodies
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: and all that. And instead they just went pure glass cannon,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: pure penetration, pure inside rush, and they neglected the run
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: defense piece completely and it's biting them severely. And again
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: I understand the notion. I'm not saying the philosophy or
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: that roster construction build is completely wrong. I disagree with it,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: and I wouldn't build my team that way if it's me.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: But you can still win like that, if you go
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: pure inside rush and pure penetration. You can still win
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: that way. But all your dudes gotta be dudes. All
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: your dudes got to be hitters. If you're gonna have
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: no power hitters in the lineup, you better have six
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: seven dudes who all hit over three hundred. And they don't,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: and they weren't going to. You weren't going to have
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: that type of interior defensive line this year. That is
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: not what was going to happen. And you could say, oh,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: maybe they're doing it for this year in the future. Cool, maybe,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: but you still got to balance it together somehow, and
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: there's no balance and it's really frustrating. And then I
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: want to tie that in with defensive philosophy. Talked about
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: a bit. I have this label here positional archetypes and
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: philosophy slash identity. We talked a bit about the archetypes
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: right on the interior. They just want inside rush, they
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: want penetration. I read you that quote, and even if
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: I didn't read you those quotes, you can look at
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: how they build their interior and know everybody at this point,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: people who don't even really know schematics about football know
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: like a three tech and what a one tech is
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: because it's such an issue for the Bills right now.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: So we know they just want penetrators. They want smaller
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: inside rush type of dudes. They want smaller guys at
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: the second level. Fine, and even that, like, if you're
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: gonna have smaller dudes at the second level, those dudes
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: better be violent. You need. I use this term a
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: lot because I think it's super applicable. Like certain teams
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: just have veloci raptors with how they play. The Texans
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: have a defense filled with them. But it's not just
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: like all Anderson and Hunter, like Stingley or Lasser. It's
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Al Shaier, it's Henry Toto. If you're gonna be smaller linebackers,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: your dudes better be violent. They better be quick, mentally quick,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: physically violent, and strong on their technique because they are undersized.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: And if you have undersized linebackers in today's NFL, we're
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: running the football matters and heavy personnel that is coming
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: back if they can't get off blocks and because they're
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: small and their body types hurt you're done. They don't
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: have that. So again, position archetypes and interior defensive line
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: positional archetypes at linebacker, position archetypes at edge. They want
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: compression guys, They want power guys. They don't look for athletes.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: They don't look for bendy turn the corner type dudes.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: They look for us. I want to tie that in
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: with philosophy because the guys that they bring in are
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: tied to what they want to be from an identity
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: at philosophical standpoint. On the defensive side of the ball, schematically,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: they want to be a one gap penetrating type of
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: defense where the front four is the engine of the team,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: where the front four provides a lot of the pass rush,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: pop and juice and does a lot against the run. Honestly,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: like all jokes aside, they want their defense to be
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: what the Texans defense is. Right now, it's got to
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: kill Sean McDermott to see them lose to the Texans
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: the way they did. How the Texans are built, the
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: dudes they have up front, Like again, it's Anderson and
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Hunter that stir the drink. Tim Settle, as everyone's joked about,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: has been really good for them, but you have Sheldon
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: Rankins on the interior, number seventy two, whose name I
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: can never pronounce. He's like, he's been a good depth
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: guy for them, and he's been impactful on the interior.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: You've got to four where you can just let the
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: front four hunt. They can cause problems against the run,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: and then when you get into passing down in distances,
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: they eat and they're a problem. Like that's what the
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Bills want. They always want to have seven in coverage,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: and they don't want to have to do a lot
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: of like simulated pressures or creepers. They might show guys
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: in the a gap and mug and then drop out.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: They don't want to blitz. They don't want to do
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: a lot of crazy stuff or creative schematic stuff. They
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: just want to Hey, we're gonna play a bunch of coverages.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: We're gonna play some Cover three. We're gonna play some quarters.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: We're gonna play some Cover six. We're gonna play some
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: Cover two. We're gonna play some Tampa two. We'll mix
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: in some man Okay, but we're we're dropping seven. We
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: want to play coverage. We just want to rush for
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: That's not a horrible identity. In and of itself. I
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: say this all the time, and I say this to
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: kind kind of set this up. I've said on the
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: show before me individually, that's not the type of defense
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: I gravitate towards. I am a you know, they're a
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: four down over front, even front, drop seven guys in
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: the coverage. I am. Give me a three to four
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: give me. You know, if anybody I say this like
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: it's so long ago, like the Dick Lebau Steelers or
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: the Rex Ryan Ravens, give me. I am a three
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: to four zone, blitz, fire zone type of dude. Give
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: me match coverages. On the back end, I want hybrid
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: body types so I can drop some dudes into coverage.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: You don't know who's rushing from where and what's happening,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: and I want violence and triggers everywhere. That's not what
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: anybody has to do. There is not any one right
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: way to build a defense, build an offense, or build
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: a winning football team. That's why there's a multitude of trees,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: coaching trees, schematic trees, philosophies, identities. That's why there's not
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: any one right answer. But I say that to say,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: like just inherently Sean mcdermotts scheme with who he is
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: now is not what I gravitate towards. Ironically, I gravitate
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: more towards Sean McDermott's mentor in Philly, Jim Johnson. If
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: anybody knows anything about Jim Johnson and his time in Philly,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: I'm not gonna spend too much time on it, but
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: Jim Johnson was a defensive coordinator for the Eagles with
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: that time with Andy Reid, even a little before that too,
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: I think. But Jim Johnson was a four to three
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: defense guy, but he was a blitzer. He was an attacker.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: That's why guys like Jeremiah Trotter and Brian Dawkins like
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: were hitters for that defense, like Hugh Douglas, guys where
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: you had dudes who could win up front. But they
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: were nasty, they were mean, They flew around, but they
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: played on the on the front foot. They attacked, they
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: came forward and Sewn mcdermomy's defenses throughout his coaching tenure
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: have done that. But I think Sean McDermott, and I've
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: said this before and I have some specific pieces for it,
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: I think Sean McDermott wants the bills to essentially just
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: be the twenty fifteen Carolina Panthers where it's not overly
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: complex schematically. Now you can like negatively and say that
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: because they're not creative. You know, where it's not overly
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: complex or creative schematically, where they're constantly playing coverage, dropping
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: seven into coverage, where they're relying on their front specifically
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: the front four to play the run, so they can
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: have the numbers advantage in coverage, right, they want to
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: win that way. The problem is being that type of
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: simplistic defense. And I don't want people to think simplistic
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: means bad. But when you are just a coverage based defense,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: or you are not overly complex schematically, you're not winning
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: with scheme and structure and you're not manipulating protection schemes
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: and attacking. When you're just relying on your dudes, that's fine,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: but you have to have a loaded defense or dudes
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: that are built for that. And again, that type of
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: identity and that type of defense works better when your
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: defense is loaded, like the Carolina Panthers defense was in
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: twenty fifteen. That's the team that had one loss. They
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: went to the Super Bowl against the Broncos, Unfortunately, that
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Panthers defense ran up against the Broncos defense, and the
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: Broncos defense did better against the Panthers offense in the
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Super Bowl than the Panthers defense did against the Broncos offense,
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: though they still did very good. Now here's some of
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: the players that were on that twenty fifteen Panthers team.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: You had Kwan Short, second team All Pro defensive tackle.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: He had eleven sacks that year. Luke Keighley first team
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: All Pro, third in the Defensive Player of the Year voting.
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: Thomas Davis Line, another linebacker on that team, First team
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: All Pro. You had two first team All Pro linebackers
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: on this team, Josh Norman, first team All Pro corner,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting, Kirk Coleman
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: safety made the Pro Bowl. Then the other like non
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: stars on that defense were an up and coming Shaq Thompson,
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: a prime Starletulalay who all Bills jokes aside, was a
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: monster for Carolina when he came out of Utah. Charles
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Tillman Bears legend who was still functional at that time
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: in zone, vet, leadership, sound and coverage. Charles Johnson monster
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: defensive end, was hurt that year, but then had came
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: back and had three sacks in the playoffs, one in
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: the Divisional Round championship, and in the Super Bowl. This
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: defense as a whole had four All pros on it
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: and two guys finish in the top four for Defensive
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Player of the Year, and one of them was Luke Keikley,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: who's viewed by some as arguably the greatest linebacker of
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: all time. You don't have that here, and I want
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: to grab this. I don't know this is common here
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: from Rage Dog Rage Doug Dog, I think, and that's
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: what I'm pronouncing it. Who says we have plenty of
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: dudes on the Bills. Benford, Milano, Bernard Hairston, Bishop, Oliver Hoyt,
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: and Bosa have all shown their dudes when an't healthy.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: When I say dudes, I mean like top tier guys
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: at their position. None of those guys that you listed
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: there are that. Respectfully, I think all those guys are
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: good football players. Went healthy one thousand percent. I don't
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: think they're dudes in the perspective of top tier guys
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: at their position. Bosa went healthy, I think can still
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: be a top ten edge rusher in this league, and
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: I think he was showing that on tape and in
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: the metrics before he got hurt this year. But I
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: don't think no, no, no, no, no no no. You're
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: saying they're all all pro leveling game wreckers. No they're not.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Christian Benfer, Matt Malonald Terrell Bernard, Max, Max Harriston. Max
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Harriston is an all pro level corner right now. Cole
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Bishop's an all pro level safety at Oliver Michael Hoyt.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: I love Hoyt. He was one of my prime free
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: agent targets for the Bills this year. Now, I don't
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: know if it's a troll or a joke, and I
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: don't want to make those assumptions. I just don't think.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: I think those guys are all very good football players,
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: good to very good for some of them. But they're
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: not like dudes how I mean it. They're not top
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: tier guys at their positions, especially when you're comparing that
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: to the names I just rattled off for the Panthers defense.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: I think again, as people even people reference last year
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: with the Eagles defense that wracked the Chiefs and the
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: Super Bowl, and I was like, Oh, that's the type
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: of defense you got to play the defense, and a
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: ton of really good football players, especially on the defensive line,
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Like you just had wave after wave of guys who
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: were a problem. And then again on the I mean
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Zach Bond was an All Pro linebacker, you had Cooper
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: dejen and what he did, and quinnyon Mitchell and Darius
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Slay and everything you've gotten. Then you have a tremendous
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: defensive coordinator kind of building it all up. Like the
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: Bills defense from an identity and philosophy standpoint, is a
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: four down overfront nickel defense for the most part, even
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: though they have started to do more base looks as
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: teams have gone bigger and they've started to even experiment
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: with some of their fronts. They've gone with some more
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: five down fronts. They've started to do some more like
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Dorny Williams as a sam linebacker on the end of
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage type of deal, and they mixed
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: in some different things. They've even gone some underfronts this
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: year where you're putting the one tech to the strong
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: side for the formation. But they are built and their
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: identity and their philosophy to play coverage and just let
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: the front four do its thing and they don't have
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: the type of front four for that. And when you
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: don't have you can either win with talent or you
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: can win with scheme. It's the whole, you know, Jimmy's
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and Joe's versus X's and O's type of deal. Right,
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: you can win with Jimmy's and Joe's and or you
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: can win with X's and O's. It can be either or.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: But if you don't have the talent advantage, you have
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: to win schematically. You have to be so sound or
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: creative or complex to you know, kind of throw games
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: on its head or throw opponents on their head. And
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: the Bills don't have that, and so you have that
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: type of less complex identity combined with a positional archetype
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: philosophy of multiple positions that make you inherently deficient and
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: an important aspect of football. And that's a recipe for failure.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: The struggles that we're seeing with the defense. We got
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: here because of their philosophy of how to build the roster,
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: their positional archetypes, and because of how that ties into
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: their schematic identity and philosophy. I don't know which is first.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: I do you know, if we're playing chicken and egg.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: I think the first comes the scheme, structure, philosophy, identity,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: and then comes the positional archetypes. But that's essentially where
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: we're at right now. Where that's where you're operating, that's
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: where you're going, and I think they need a change
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: in that regard. I will say since Sean McDermott took
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: over the defense, I know obviously they had a ton
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: of points put up against them or on them against Tampa.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: I do think they've done some fun stuff in coverage
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: and they've been better in coverage, less spot drop, more matching,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: tighter coverage. I think they've been better in that regard.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: It's just been unfortunate that that's occurred with a dip
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: in the pass rush, largely because of Bosa's injury and
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: some of the injuries up front overall. But Bosa being
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: banged up has been a huge problem and White going down.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: And that's even why I was excited for Hoyt when
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: he came in, because I like a skill set and
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: what he can do and the type of player that
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: he is. But I thought it signaled. I thought it
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: signaled they're going to start to operate differently, and they
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: did to a degree with Hoyt. But if if he is,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: if his type of skill set or traits are so
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: important to elevating your scheme and structure, you have to
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: have multiple guys who can do that, and they don't,
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: and it's it's just unfortunate. And then you get to
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: a spot where again like you I am, I am not.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: I know we're fans of this game, but at the
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: end of the day, like I know, they get paid
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: millions and they're in the public eye and all that stuff,
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: but it's not like these football players, I gets still
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: their job. So I'm not one to ever, you know,
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: call for someone's job or say they should be cut
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: or be released or whatever, like I'm not that guy.
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: But it's it's wild to me that Jordan Phillips has
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: seen as many snaps as he is, especially a run
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: defense standpoint, Like and I know, you can't always game
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: it up. You can't only put him out there for past,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: you know, past past reps, but he's just not serviceable
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: in any way against the past. And the fact that
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: they would see a guy like that of his level
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: at this point and his skill set and his traits,
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: the fact that they would see that guy and think
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: he's capable of starting multiple games for them and being
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: a regular rotational guy. I think tells you all you
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: need to know about their ideas, on their philosophy and
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: on how they want to build from the interior out.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: And again that's using the intent here defensive line as
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: the focus, but it extends, it all goes throughout the
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: the grouping and you know, I just think hanging your
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: your hopes on one aspect of football is a rough
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: way to go. And again, injuries have one hundred percent
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: been an issue. Bernard being hurt has impacted the way
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: he plays the game. The interior defensive line issues have
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: been in an issue. Bosa goes down, Greg Russeau was
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: hurt to start the year. A J. Panessa has a
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: shoulder injury. Now, like there's all these things are kind
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: of adding up. Point goes down, Like there are one
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: hundred percent injuries. But even when everybody's at their best
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: and healthy, Ed Oliver was sweet again like ed Oliver
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: went both the games he played looked great. But we
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: know what we've seen in the past. The question has
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: always been you get those flashes from at Oliver and
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: he follows them up with disappearing acts. So he'll have
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: a game, he'll have bunches where you know, four sacks
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: and three games, or four sacks and two games, or
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: three sacks and three games, and or you know, a
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: bunch of TFLs or good plays in the backfield, and
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: then it's all of a sudden, like he's ghost and
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: you don't see him at all. Sometimes it's in high
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: you know, high profile moments in the playoffs. Sometimes it's
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: just for multiple stretches during the regular season, and that
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: was gonna be your top tier guy who had the
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: least amount of questions about him. It's just just worrisome
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: on that defensive side. I think they need I've said it.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: I think it's still more tweaks and alterations, but they
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: need to do something different from a positional archetype and
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: philosophy and identity standpoint, on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: They can't just keep operating in this manner. It's too
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: high variants, it's too they're too dependent on other things
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: to maintain defensive success at this point, and it's tough
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: hu else. I don't think I have any other Yeah,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: So this is the defensi side of the ball. We're
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: gonna flip the offensive side now in a minute. And again,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: I don't want to make it seem like the Bills
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: don't have good players, right. The Bills have good players
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: on the defensive side of the ball, and I do
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: think some of the down years that we're seeing from
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: guys aren't necessarily indicative of who they are. But I
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: think they do have to change some of their archetypes
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: and their positional archetypes and the type of body types
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: they gravitate towards the skill sets they bring in in
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: addition to some of the identity and the philosophy stuff.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: That's not to say they don't have good players. I
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: do think they have good players. I don't think they're
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: completely devoid of talent. I don't think they have like
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: s tier top tier defenders. I don't think they have
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: a bunch of game records or game wreckers on the
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball. I don't think they have
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: all Pro candidates on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: But they do have good football players, and I think
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: they can be a good defense. They just need to
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: be more well rounded and not play the ends of
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: the extreme. And again, injuries are important. I do think
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: that if they were completely healthy for the entirety of
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: the year, they would be a much better defense, like
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: you could say for a bunch of teams and a
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: bunch of units in the league. But they were when healthy,
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: they were always going to struggle against the run. This
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: year it was just going to be a matter of
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: how much. It was like are they going to be
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: bottom five? Are they going to be bottom ten? Like?
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: What are they going to be against the run? Can
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: they score enough to have gamescript help them out again?
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: Are they going to continue to get turnovers? Can they
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: penetrate and shoot gaps enough to get negative plays and
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: force teams in a known passing situations? It was more
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: of how can they Their best way to stop the
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: run was going to be ancillary things to stopping the run.
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: It was going to be other things. How can you
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: cobble together the run defense rather than just how do
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: we stop the run? That's how they were going to
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: stop the run. They weren't going to stop the run
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: by stopping the run itself. They were going to do
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: it by winning in other areas to try and force
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: teams away from it. If that makes sense, And I
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: just don't think that's sound because it makes you so
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: dependent on a multitude of other avenues to stop this
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: one thing that is a pain point for how you
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: operate not only as a defense, but then how you
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: operate as a team as a whole. Oh question here,
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: Uh is it fair to say Oliver needs a reliable
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: running mate to be consistent? I think that's a really
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: good question. I think more of it's on ed, But yeah,
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: I do think the odds would in increase if he
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: got a consistent dude next to him, even just he
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: doesn't have to be he doesn't. I don't think he
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: needs an All Pro next to him or some stud
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: next to him. But if he can just get a
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: reliably good football player against him, like even what Daiquon
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: was what two seasons ago, where he kind of looked
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: like an All Pro for a couple of weeks, if
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: he can just get a consistently good player next to him, Yeah,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: to your point, if he gets a reliable running mate, yes,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: I would prefer that guy be more of a true
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: one tech or be more of a complete guy. He
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: doesn't have to be a pure inside rush winner. He
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: doesn't have to be a pure run stuffer. I think
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: it's if Ed plays next to a more complete defensive
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: tackle or just a dude. Obviously that'll work well. But
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: I just think if he gets more of a consistent,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: not consistent, more of a complete defensive tackle next to him,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: that would go a long way. He needs somebody next
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: to him who just has some kind of run defense
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: in his skill set and isn't bereft or devoid of talent,
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: or isn't skewed severely to one side of the pendulum.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: And they found out by saying, am I crazy for
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: thinking Dion Walker can become that dude? I think there's
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: If you would have asked me this in the off season,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: I would have said yes. But with his play this year,
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: I do think there is some hope for that. I
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: don't think I would like to see them deploy Dion
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: Walker in ways that aren't just him being a one tech.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: I think he could potentially become that guy, but you're
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: really seeing him kind of dip in the other areas.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: But I think Walker could become that guy. He's just
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: off this one season. I've said it before, like he
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: surpassed my expectations for this year as an overall player,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: but even as a run defender. I thought his run
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: defense was going to be atrocious. It has not been.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: He's worked on his anchor, his block recognition has improved.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: I think he needs to be better at using his
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: hands in his length and needs to be better at
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: block deconstruction and improve some surface area of things. So
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: much of it for Walker is like it or not,
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: is tie to his build, Like he's so tall and
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: he's not very bendy, Like he's going to be at
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: a leverage disadvantage against most interior guys just because of
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: how he's built right, so weight. He's gonna have to
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: constantly manage his weight, manage his hell physically, he's gonna
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: make she has to make sure he's in great shape
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: because anything that's tweaked or moved in the wrong way
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: could be a problem for him. But I don't think
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: he's been this stud this year that people are kind
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: of labeling him to be. But I think he's having
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: a solid rookie season. He surpassed my expectations. I think
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: he could become that dude. I would like to see
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: him have more positional versatility and get used a little
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: bit more like he was a Kentucky. But if he
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: has to be that one tech. I don't think that's
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: a horrible notion to kind of put him next to Ed,
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: but I would I would like more of a true
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: I would like more of a run defense skill set
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: in there. I think Walker right now is still like
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: when he came in. I thought he was like ninety
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: ten pass rush to defense. Now I think he's more
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: like seventy thirty. I would like somebody on the interior
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: that's more like fifty five to forty five or sixty
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: forty at worst. But I do have hope for a Walker.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: That's a very good question. Okay, let's move to the
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: offensive side of the ball. And I labeled this one
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: verticality and fear from the wide receivers. And when I
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: say verticality and fear from the wide receivers, I mean
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: that from a defensive perspective. I talked about it earlier.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: We saw the Bills offense successfully pivot their entire offensive
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: identity last year. Condensed formations, bigger body types. We're reducing
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: formational with We're gonna run the football. We're gonna get
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: to twelve personnel. We're gonna use jumbo, we're gonna use
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: six offensive linemen. We are gonna mash mash mash. We
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: are going to get Matt Collins in there and Keon
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: Coleman in there. We're gonna people move, dudes, and we're
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: gonna run duo, and we're going to run these three
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: to four run concepts and we're just going to crush
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: teams and then we'll pass as we need to. Right,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: So that was their identity. They pivoted as the season
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: went on iterily, like the Baltimore game last year, the
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: Houston game last year, teams started to find the Bills
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: offense out a little bit. I said it last year,
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: and I said it similarly this year. If you were
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: a team that had good and or athletic corners, you
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: could play single high coverage against the Bills because the
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: threat of getting beat outside and or deep was low.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: So defenses would start to do that. They'd play a
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: bunch of single high, they would try and stop the run.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: They would force the Bills into third and long or
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: you know, known or true passing situations, and then they
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: would game up their protections and they would cause problems
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: for Allen. We saw that last year, particularly the Ravens
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: game in the Houston game, So the Bills went out
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: and they got Amari Cooper because they were like, uh, oh,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: we have a problem. We need a bucket getter on
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: the outside. Let's get Amarti Cooper. Cooper flashed that a
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: little bit wasn't necessarily himself. He also got hurt. Was
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: kind of the answer, but also kind of wasn't. But
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: you saw that last year in your offense. You saw, hey,
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: we have a really good run game. We're winning with
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: formation and alignment and personnel. But things are starting to
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: get wonky for us if we don't have threats on
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: the outside, if we can't win on the outside, things
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: are gonna get tight and tough for us as an offense.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: You knew that last year. Okay, So you come into
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: this offense, offense, come into this offseason, and all you
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: do is you add Josh Palmer and you don't really
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: address wide receiver at all. Teams again started to find
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: out to find the Bills offense out last year, and
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: the Bills did very little to combat that. They did
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: very little to push defense back, make them back off,
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: and make them have to account for being passed on
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: vertically and or outside the numbers. Yeah, those teams were
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: good or athletic cbs could give the Bills problems because
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: it meant defenses could play single high and crowd the
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: box and or line of scrimmage to stop the run.
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: They could flood bodies in between the numbers in between
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: the hashes, make life difficult and be like, yo, we
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: good luck with your guys on the outside trying to
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: beat our guys on the outside. Right, And the Texans
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: the game is an extreme example of that, right, they
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: have an amazing, amazing corner tandem. Kamari Lassiter is like
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: one of the best CB twos in the league, borderline
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: CB one now like low and CB one stingy if
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: not for Patzertan, Derek Stingley for me, would be hands
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: down the best corner in football. So that's a horrible
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: match up for the Bills. They're just lockdown period. But
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: we saw struggles earlier in the year Guess Christian Zalez
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: and Carlton Davis right, Which is why Don Kinkaid is
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: so important. Because you get Kinkaid mitchmatched or matched up
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: on linebackers or safety. He's the mismatch creator. He's the
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: guy you want to take advantage of and get the
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: ball to vertically and or for explosives or chunk plays
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: because it's either coming for him or it's coming from
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: Shakir on a wide receiver screen, and he breaks some
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: tackles and he does some stuff. You're not getting guys
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: on the outside who can win or separate. You don't
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: have these bucket getters on the outside. And you knew
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: that could be a problem last year. That's why you
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: traded for Amari Cooper. And so they recognized, hey, we
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: need a bucket getter, and they tried to get one.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: And instead of trying to secure that for twenty twenty five,
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: and I mean, like really securing that instead, and this
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: is no disrespect to Josh Palmer, because I like Josh
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: Palmer or what he is as a player, instead of
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: really securing that bucket getter, they added a career wide
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: receiver three who could spot duty as a wide receiver two.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: That was their answer. And that's not cutting it. Josh Palmer,
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: I've said it all year, really good at winning in
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: the underneath and the low intermediate. He's got his good
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: in his route stems. He's good with deception. He can
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: win vertically off of a schemed route or even sometimes
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: with deception, but people overblew his deep threat ability because
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: of some of the metrics that show but there was
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: blown coverage. There were things that were kind of in
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: his favor that weren't like him being a true burner
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: truly beating someone on the outside with just like running
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: by somebody or being a vertical threat take the top
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: off the defense type of vertical guy. That's what I
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: mean with verticality. And so that was their answer for like, oh,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: here's how we'll improve the wide receiver room. And I
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: do think as an overall wide receiver, Josh Palmer is
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: better than Matt Collins. And you could even make the
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: case that Josh Palmer is better than the banged up
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: of Marti Cooper they got, but they needed more than that.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: And on top of that, they refuse this year to
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: incorporate the wide receivers that they have with speed, which
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: Occurtis Samuel and Elijah Moore. Now I don't think either
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: of those guys are the slam dunk answers to their
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: wide receiver problems for a multitude of reasons. But Elijah
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: Moore and Curtis Samuel are the bills only or have
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: been on paper the Bills is only shot at a
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: vertical element to their pass game. And then you look
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: at them individually. Curtis Samuel has injury concerns and can
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: never stay on the field, and Elijah Moore was a late,
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: almost panic kind of ad. So that to me, again,
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: if I'm trying to read the tea, leaves a little bit.
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: If your two main speed guys are a guy who's
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: hurt a bunch and doesn't really stay on the field
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: and the other speed guy is the guy you added
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: last minute, that to me signals like you don't really
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: care about that element in your wide receiver room or
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: in your offense. And you needed that, you needed verticality
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: in this offense, and or you needed bucket ketters, and
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: you didn't do much to set yourself up for bringing
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: that in twenty twenty five and building upon twenty twenty four.
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: And this is where it ties into the predictability and
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: what Brady has done. Oh, I got to stop. You
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: got super chat Ali, Thank you very much for being here.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: Thank you for the super chat Ali says. The first
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: sack was Allen's fault turned down knocks open plus late
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: to his read of more open. In the end, zone.
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: The other seven sacks all occurred in the second half
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: after Brown's injury, and forward directly him getting beat. Negligence
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: from the coaches question our exclamation point, I do think
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: I said this during the game, and I said it
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: after you could see Spencer Brown was laboring. There are
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: multiple drives where he gives up a sack and he
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: comes up holding his elbow, like, barely able to use
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: his arm. And Anderson knew it. Hunter knew it. But
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: you were just watching Anderson beat him around the arc
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: and going through that right arm and that right shoulder,
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: and Brown couldn't do anything. Brown couldn't punch with that hand,
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: couldn't push, he could barely lift it past like his chest.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: So I do think it was it leaving a guy
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: out there who's clearly hurting, Like there's a difference between
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: someone being hurt and someone being injured. Brown was injured,
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: and they left him in there. And not only did
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: they leave him in there, but they kept putting him
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: on an island. So it's not even like, okay, like
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: you can you can still go and gut it out,
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: but we'll give you some help. They left him in
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: there on an island. I think that's rough to leave
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: an injured guy in there who's clearly injured and also
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: like is injured to the point where he's hurting the team.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: You got to make that call and get him out
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: for his benefit and also selfishly for the teams. And
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: at the very least, you have to give him some
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: kind of help. You have to give more chips, You
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: have to line up the tight end to his side
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: and create some interference or obstruction for that edge, or
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: again just chip out of the backfield and release, like,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: do something. You got to give some kind of support,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: or stop bringing your guards out to attack the spy
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: and have the have o cyrus torns staying to give
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: help to Spencer Brown, like you got you do something.
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: They didn't do anything. They didn't change anything schematically. They
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: just kept doing the same thing and they kept getting killed.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: Even Spencer Brown having one arm wasn't enough to change
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: them from doing it. That So, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: Negligence is a strong word. I think that's fair if
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: you want to say negligence, malpractice whatever, like I think that.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: I still think that's crazy. He was clearly hurt and
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: they didn't even get Not only did they not take
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: him out. They didn't Eve give him help. They just
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: let him rock out there with one arm against the
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: best edge arguably the best, if not the best edge
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: rushing tandem in the league. They just let him rock
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: on an island like that's crazy crazy. Yes, so, and
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: I was saying, really good comment there, Alie, thank you
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: for again, thank you for being here thinking for the
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: super chat. That's a good question. So as I was
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: mentioning with the speed, the verticality and not building, this
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: is where it comes into the predictability and things for
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: the offense. So so much of the conversation lately has
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: been the predictability and Brady just leaning into the same
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: concepts if you're you know, counting at home, the run concept,
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: stuff like blast counter, which is a concept I love
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: that they added this year. The way they run it
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: in the presentation has become so predictable. Now it's getting
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: found out and it's getting stopped all the time. Their
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: run game is getting found out because they run the
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: same concepts from the same type of presentation the past game.
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: As everybody knows now haha, they run Mesh a ton,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: ha ha, they run double China a ton, They run
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: Hank which is curl flats a ton that's their three
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: like bread and butter, and they run wide receiver screen
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: which haha, they do a ton, and they run it
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: as drive starters. They run all of these as like
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: their drive starters. They're feel good middle of the drive stuff,
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: the god to have it, high leverage moments on third down,
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: fourth down, low red zone like stuff that you need.
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: They run the same stuff. And yes there's different Like
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: mesh has multiple versions. You got mesh rail, you got
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: running back mesh traffic. You have more of a traditional mesh,
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: but it's still mesh, and teams know it's coming. And
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: they've gotten so predictable in their concepts and their sequencing
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: and their situational football off offensively, and that's a problem. Right,
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: But even before that, you came into twenty twenty five
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: running almost the same offense as twenty twenty four. So
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: after a year in which you had the NFL MVP
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: and you had a great offensive year, and you had
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: all these people applauding you for how you pivoted your
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: offense and everybody eats and all of that, right, all
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: this success and knowing that because of that success, there
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: is going to be a target on your back and
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: people are going to study the hell out of you.
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: Instead of building or evolving or tweaking or adding layers,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: they just stood pat at who they were and what
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: they were. Their biggest change this year has been adding
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: that blast counter run concept and going with less Jumbo,
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: which a six offensive lineman, and using Jackson Hawes instead
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: of Alec Anderson. That's their biggest change. That's it other
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: than that they're running about the same offense as last year.
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: And then, like I mentioned, you couple that with running
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: the same pass and run concepts over and over from
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: very similar presentations, meaning the personnel and alignment over and over.
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: You you just stamp hat That was always my ash.
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: I said it in the offseason. I thought the wide
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: receiver room that they had was fine if you're going
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: to be a run, heavy, people moving type of offense.
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: And I'm still saying that now, like, if you want
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: to be a spread it out, you got to chuck
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: it thirty to forty times. You got to win on
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: the outside, you got to win deep. That's not what
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: they have at wide receiver, and the lack of verticality
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: is severely hurting them. And then on top of that
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: because again, everything is getting tighter. We're not scared for
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: a defense. We're not scared to get beat on the
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: outside for a defense. We're not scared to get beat
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: over the top. They're not throwing. They're not pushing the
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: ball down No one's beating us downfield. No one's separating downfield.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: They don't throw those routes. The concepts aren't geeld gild.
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: The concepts aren't geared to push the ball downfield. Alan's
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: not pulching the ball downfield. We're not scared of the
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: dudes that they even try to do that anyway. All
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: of that, right, the notion that they were going to
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: be a run first offense, condensed formation, all that stuff.
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: I like that. It works, But you can't just be
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: that because eventually everything is going to start to get tighter.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: Everyone's going to creep down. Everything is starting to get
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: will start to get constricted like it did last year,
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: like you saw, which is why you tried to get
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: Amari Cooper. Well you not even tried. You did get
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: Amari Cooper, and instead they just went back to that
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: well again this year and we're seeing the struggles in
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: the run game, and now you're getting teams that are
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: tied into your tendency, and I think that's part of
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: the bigger issue as well. I still think this offense
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: can work running the football as their main quote unquote identity.
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: I know people don't like that. I know people are
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: gonna say, you have the MVP, you have Josh Allen,
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: you should be chucking in around, blah blah blah. I
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: get all that. I still think this offense can work
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: as a run first team, heavier personnel work that stuff.
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: They do have to get healthier. Kinkaid being out hurts
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: them a ton, but I digress. They can still win offensively,
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: but they've got to start to limit the predictability. You've
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: got to see more under center passing. You've got to
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: start to see more shotgun runs. There should be much
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: more play action in this offense. There should be much
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: more bootlegs in this offense and moving the pocket and
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: taking advantage of Allen's legs and manufacturing some mobility for him.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: You're seeing teams tee off with rush lane integrity because
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: they can manipulate the bills protection rules and schemes against them.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: That's why Allen's getting kept in the pocket. That's why
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: they're able to figure things out, and they're winning on
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: early downs against the Bills to get them into third
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: and long and or third in known passing situations, so
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: they can game up the Bills protections because they know
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: they're likely to get a five man protection. They know
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: what the Bills are gonna do and how they're gonna
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: run it, and then they game up their protections. They
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: keep Alan Hemden, nobody separates, and they can't win. The
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: instructured pass game was an issue last year and it's
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: still an issue this year. You cannot live if you
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: are the Bills regularly chucking at thirty to forty times
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: a game. Can you win every once in a while
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: like that, Sure, but it's gonna take those high variance
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: mutant alien unicorn plays from Allen, which can happen, but
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: having them happen consistently is a lot. Like you're just
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: you can't ask your pitcher to consistently go like eight innings,
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: one hit game after game. Can you you have pictures
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: that can do that? Yeah? Can Alan do that? Yeah?
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: Can he do that every single game? That's a lot
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: to ask, And again it's not I don't think they
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: need they do need better guys on the outside, and
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: they do need verticality, but that's not going away. I
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: know they had Brandon Cooks. I'm gonna talk about that
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: in a bit. That issue isn't gonna be fixed this shoar.
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: But if they changed some of their ratios, their tendencies,
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: they're telegraphing their tells that can go a long way,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: but they have refused to do that largely, even when
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: they flip to I want to pull up this uh
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: text from Kendall that he sent me because we were
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: upset about things. Even if you want to flip and
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: kind of do some different things and go like okay,
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: like we're gonna try and change some of our tendencies
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: this game, let's do this, they still fall into other
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: tendencies here. It was a good Kendall tweeted this last
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: Thursday after the game. The Bills and Quarters one through three,
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: so when the game was largely close before they fourth
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: quarter stuff where they had to pass it a ton
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: to try and score at the end, the Bills and
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: Quarters one through three against the Texans, they had a
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: sixty eight point seven design run rate on first down,
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: so essentially seven out of ten times they're running the
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: ball in first down, and then they had a forty
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: five point five percent play action rate on second down,
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: So it was mostly the same run sequence, mostly the
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: same sequence quarters one through three, run the ball on
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: first down, then play action pass until the last play
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: of the third quarter when they went first down play action.
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: And the Bills right now have a fifty seven point
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: three design run rate on first down this year, which
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: is second highest in the league. It says, even when
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: you tip things a little bit, they fall into other patterns.
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: It's like, okay, we want some we want some more
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: play action, and it's like, oh, okay, you want some
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: more play action. Okay, we're gonna do it in a
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: super predictable manner. And it's just like, oh, like, why
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: why are you doing this? Why why are you? Like? We, yes,
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: we want play action, but why do you have to
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: give it to us in such a predictable form. It's
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: just frustrating. Oh got another one from Ali, Ali, thank
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: you for still being here thinking for the super check.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: Ali says the Bills defense is top five and rush
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: yards before contact per attempt, dead lash and rush yards
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: after contact per attempt, poor tacklers, tarn hits. Oh yeah,
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: what he marks three yards short of the line the
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: game on fourth and one and gets dragged eight yards
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: zero physicality. Yeah, that was really rough. It's it was
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: such a good fit from arn and good like Ajvanessa
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: crashes down like I thought it was a stop. I
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: jumped out of out of my seat. I was yes.
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: And then like you said, when he march just carries
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: him forward. Good call there on. You know, different sites
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: are different. On next Gen, they are eighth in yards
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: before contact per attempt at one point oh three, which
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: is fine their top ten. That's good and a significant improvement.
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: Last year they were one of the worst teams in
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: the league at yards before contact again because they were
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: getting blown off the ball like this year. But to
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: your point, yeah, they are dead last and rush yards
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: after contact per attempt, as I mentioned, I didn't mention
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: the official yards, but they're at four point three yards
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: after contact per attempt on the rush, which is significantly
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: worse than the Falcons who are at three point seven
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: to six. And that four point three is historically the
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: worst mark in the last like eight seasons as far
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: back as I can go with next Gen, which is crazy. Yeah,
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: they're just and as Ali says the coaches can't make
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: guys tacklers, it's pathetic, and they say, yeah, dead last
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: time mile. Absolutely, Yeah. I do think there's something to
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: be said for not to oversimplify it, because I do
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: think there's a science to run fits and being in
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: your right gap at the right time, at everybody doing
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: their job and being a good tackler. But so much
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: about run defense tackling, but run defense in general. And
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: players have also told me this when I've asked them
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: about it, and you'll hear coaches talk about it too.
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: So much of it is just a mentality. You have
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: to want to stop the run, you have to want
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: to run through a blocker, you have to want to
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: tackle somebody. Yes, there's technique, same foot, same shoulder wrap up,
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: you know if you want to do the alligator type deal,
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: or you know where you're putting your head, where you're
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: putting you shoulder. There's new age. Before it used to
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: be get three quarters your body in front of the guy.
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: So if you're tackling him here, you're putting your head here.
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: Now you want to protect the neck and head, so
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: you want to put your head back this way so
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: you're getting less of your body in front of the ball,
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: which leads the more shoulder and arm tackles. So I
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: think that naturally leads to more broken tackles and poorer tackling.
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: But yeah, they're I think so much of it is
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: just technique and a mentality. You have to want to tackle,
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: and you have to want to play run defense. And
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: I'm not saying the Bills don't, but oh, they're just
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: so bad in so many areas of it. Oh, I
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: love this from Ali. Ali says, Yeah, I need to
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: get some rugby coaches in to help these guys tackle.
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: You're seeing that across the board that the rugby style
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: of tackling. What I mentioned now is the rugby style
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: like football style is, you know, if the ball carrier
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: is running this way, Football style is get three quarters
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: of your body here and get in front of a
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: Rugby style is the opposite. Guys going this way, you're
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: putting only just your shoulder here because you don't have
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: a helmet. You at most you have like a scrum cap.
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: You're trying to protect your head and your neck, your shoulders,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: you're trying to protect against all that type of stuff,
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: and you have to wrap up you can't just deliver
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: shoulder tackles in rugby. You'll get carded for that. So
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: everything is about wrapping up, being sound, you know, same foot,
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: same shoulder, head to the right side, getting your angles right,
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: wrapping up, bringing down with force, hitting the right target zone,
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. Yeah, I love that comment.
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: I love that comment. Love that comment. Well, don Ollie,
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: appreciate you being here. Yeah. So the struggles for this offense,
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: I said it even during the Dolphins game when they
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: won in Week three, I think that was when they
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: won thirty one twenty one. You saw that stretch where
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: they were struggling to move the ball offensively and they
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: got saved by that roughing the punter and they won
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: that game by ten. But you saw where the defense
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: was just playing zone and they were like go ahead,
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: like go ahead, try and try and be just like
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: we don't think you can do anything for a chunk play,
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: so we're just gonna keep everything in front of us.
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: And the Bills started to struggle, and that's just been amplified.
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: If they can't run the ball, they're almost dead in
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: the water because they don't have a passing game that
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: works well in structure and presents threats on the outside
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: and or vertical, and it's scary and it's worrisome, and
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: it happened last year and they tried to fix it,
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: which made you think, Okay, well, they're definitely gonna try
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: and fix it going into this year, especially with a
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: full season of tape on your offense and a full
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: season of studying that defenses and opponents did nope. And
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: you know what's a really interesting point too. I mean,
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: everybody in their mother kind of knows they're predictable at
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: this point now, But going back and earlier into the year,
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: it was like you notice teams that had more time
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: to study the Bills were gaming them up like well,
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: like what the Falcons did because they came off their
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: by what the Patriots did, because they've seen them a
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: bunch and Rabel has experienced against them a bit, albeit
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: albeit in different forms. But you saw teams kind of
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: coming out that have had extra time being able to
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: scout the Bills and see what's up. That's why I
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: think also think when they played New England later in
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: the year, they've they've seen them already once this year,
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: and I think New England's coming off of bye the
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: week before they played the Bills, So you need to
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: limit your predictability because it's gouging you in a multitude
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: of fashions. And yeah, let me see, let me see.
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: Are they am I crazy? Hold on? Oh yeah. The
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: Pats play the Giants this upcoming week and then they
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: have a buy and they play the Bills. So the
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: Pats have already seen the Bills once and they get
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: an extra week to prepare. So if you have any
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: type of predictability, they've already seen you once and they
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: have the extra week to prepare. You're just seeing so
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: many teams kind of figure this Bill's offense out, and
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: for whatever reason, they're not doing any of the most basic,
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: easy access things that they can to kind of pivot
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: and break tendency to flip scripts. They're just not I
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: don't think they necessarily have the personnel that it And
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: this is where the frustrating part comes in. It's part
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: of personnel issue, it's part a schematic and coaching issue,
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: and it's part of Josh Allen issue. It's all the things.
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: Josh Allen's not playing great ball. He also doesn't have
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: a great supporting cast to throw it the way I
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: think this offense needs to And I also don't think
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: Joe Brady is maximizing the pieces that he does have.
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: Tying into that, Brandon Cooks started watching his tape a
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: little bit. He's not the downfield guy that he was.
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: Majority of his stuff is like short and underneath it's
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: like slants and crossers and some days and inbreakers ther
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: crossers that turn into hitches, like over the ball type
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: sit route type of deals. I think he's a good
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: route runner. He routed up Cole Bishop in the Saints
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: game earlier this year where Ratler just threw it a
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: little short. It was initially ruled a touchdown and then
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: they looked at it and decided decided it wasn't. He
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: had a couple good nice routes running aginst Seattle and
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: against the Bucks. I'm not against adding Brandon Cooks. I
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: don't know how much it moves the needle. I also,
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: at this point, unfortunately, I don't really have much faith
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: in Joe Brady to use who he's got. Like I
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: said earlier, I don't think Elijah Moore and Curtis Samuel
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: or world beaters and the answers that the Bills need.
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: But I also think that Joe Brady is under utilizing
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: Curtis Samuel and Elijah Moore. Now Samuel's been hurt, and
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: maybe there's stuff going on behind the scenes that I
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: don't know. But I'm for the brand Cook's edition because
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: why not. I mean, at this point, I don't want
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: to sound drastic. Beggars can't be choosers, but I am.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: I'm I'm not overly hopeful. I think you know, he
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: can help, you know, get him on the move a
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: little bit. I don't think he's necessarily an X like
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: they can need. I think he can do some release stuff,
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: but I don't want him seeing a ton of press.
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: Get him on the move, let him work, See if
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: you can stress the field a little bit with him.
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: But I think he's more just gonna win with his route,
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: running kind of in the seams and outside a little bit.
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: I think he can, you know, do some stuff, but
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: we'll see. I just and maybe it's me just kind
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: of being I don't think I'm being a prisoner of
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: the moment actually at all. I just I don't think Brad.
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: I don't think they have a ton of talent at
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: wide receiver now or a ton of bucket getters. But
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: that being said, I still don't think Brady is maximizing
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: the value of the guys that he has in the
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: wide receiver room, so I think Cooks fits in that perfectly.
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: I don't think he's this bucket getter that he used
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: to be, but I also don't have faith and Brady
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: to maximize him right now, So it's rough. What's up, Brad?
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: Brad Ah, I feel like I don't know if you
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: did it from earlier because I said it, I liked it,
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: and then the handles changed. Now now I can see
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: the capitals and it makes it. Yes, Brad at guitar,
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: thank you very much for still being here thinking for
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: the super chet, Brad says, Assuming Brady goes, who catches
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: your interest as an OC, it's tough, right because the
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: good ocs that you like now are probably going to
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: get head coaching job somewhere, like Clint Kobiak from Seattle,
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: who I really like. I think he's probably gonna get
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: some head coaching opportunities or calls or something, and if not,
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: he's probably not gonna want to leave Seattle. So you're
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: not going to get somebody like that, So you're looking
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: at somebody who likely gets fired, and then who do
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: you like do you bring them in? I'm going to
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: say this, and I don't know if people would hate this,
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: but I think would work really well. I want someone
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: from the Shanahan or the McVeigh tree, as I'm sure
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: a lot of folks do. If Mike McDaniel gets fired,
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: I want Mike McDaniel from Miami. Don't yell at me.
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: I don't know if that necessarily worked, from like a
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: mind's standpoint, if you know him and McDermott, how they'd
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: get along, what that would look like. But I love
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: the idea of Sean McDermott being the head coach and
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: running the defense and Mike McDaniel just gets to run
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: the offense. Yes, McDermott probably gives some input, but I
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: think you get an opportunity just to be like, hey,
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: run this side of the ball. I think McDaniel could
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: do it. I would. I don't know McDermott will let
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: him do it, you know, a fair question to ask.
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: But I think his run game stuff in Miami was underrated,
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: and I think his type of offense that's designed to
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: like create these open windows and how Allen's skillset would
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: fit into that. I would like that very much. So
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: that's my that's my viewpoint and or not viewpoint. That's
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: my pick. And I'm still saying it because I think
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: I think Miami kind of falters a bit down the
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: stretch and then if he gets fired, that kind of
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: lines up. That's really who you're hoping at, because anybody
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: who's like a good hot OC right now is probably
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: either gonna stay with their team and or get a
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: head coaching opportunity and isn't like so they're either gonna
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: get a head coaching spot or they're gonna stay where
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: they are. They're not gonna leave to be you know,
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: they're not gonna leave being in OC to go be
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: an OC somewhere else. So you either need to get
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: somebody who's a QB coach somewhere, somebody who is a
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: good offensive mind or head coach and gets fired like
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: a Robert reverse Robert Solad situation where he was a
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: you know, head coach, got fired now he's the Niners DC.
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: I would take Mike McDaniel and that is my vote.
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: So I'm gonna continue to go that that route. But
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: even if it's not him, give me somebody from from
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: the Shanahan McVeigh tree, Like, that's where I'm at at
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: this point. I need that I haven't. Ali, I saw
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: your comment. I have in Washington on Iowa State actually
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: know what I have watched in my Iowa state. Huh,
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: that's interesting. I'd have to scour more from a college
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: coach sandpoint, but I would like more of a pro
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: established name already. We'll see, we'll see. That's a very
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: good question. I like that. Oh that's fun. That's fun.
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: That's fun. That's fun. Oh, Ali, you're saying the Rams
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: passing game. I don't know why. I thought. I thought
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: somebody said mention something from Iowa State in here. Yeah,
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: I'm always very well, you know what, No, because I
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: know I know how much I see, even the stuff
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: with like Liam Cohen, and I know how much like
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: the pass game coordinators and even everybody who does the
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: grunt work, like how much they learn under McVeigh. That
- 2:02:35Speaker 1: would be fair to say I would welcome that. I
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: would welcome that the Rams pass game coordinator, I would say,
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: I got to dive into I'm so bad at like
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: knowing who the position coaches are, like those type of
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: roles for the teams like, I watch so much tape
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: and very rarely am I like, oh yeah, this guy's
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: the running backs coach. This guy is the wide receivers
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: coach and pass game coordinator. But I would welcome that
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: he was at Iowa State. That's that's why I'm thinking that. Okay,
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: cool cause you said that and I saw the name,
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: and I was like, I'm not crazy. Thank you think
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: you think you? Thank you? He was an Iowa State
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: last year. Right, I'm not crazy. I'm looking him up.
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: You're probably going to beat this to me before I
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: even get there. Bum bum ba ah yeah Nay Shieldhouse,
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: Yeah right, I'm not crazy. No, he was. I was
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: taking twenty twenty three. That's the year I'm thinking of.
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: Everything's kind of blurring together. That's fair, that's fair. I
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: like that idea. I like that idea. Yeah, I would
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: be down for that. Anybody who's tied to that tree,
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: give it to me, give it to me, Give it
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: to me. Ali, you're crushing in the comments this year
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: or this episode. I like that very much. That's really cool. Yeah,
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: And so that's the fair point to you're saying he's
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: going to get a job as an OC somewhere soon.
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: That's the type of deal too, right, So you're either
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: getting someone who's a head coach or who's an OC
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: on a team where the head coach is going to
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: get fired so they're out of a job, or you're
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: looking to grab somebody who is a current QB coach,
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: pass game coordinator, something like that, and that way you
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: can pluck them and have them get a promotion. That's
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: super fair. I like that. And yeah, last little piece
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: on Cooks, I think it's a fine addition. I don't
- 2:04:18Speaker 1: think he's the bucket getter that they need it wide receiver.
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: I don't think adding him hurts. You know, at this point,
- 2:04:24Speaker 1: beggers can't be choosers, and you miss one hundred percent
- 2:04:27Speaker 1: of the shots you don't take. Wayne Gretzky, Michael Scott.
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: But I don't have a ton of faith in Brady
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: right now because there's there's there's buttons that Brady could
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: be pushing and could have been pushing to help this
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: offense and he's not. So I just I'm really frustrated
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: with him, and I'm even more frustrated with the defense,
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: and it's annoying. You know something, I'm not frustrated with
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: the best pizza in Buffalo one pie pizza. If you
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: live in Buffalo and you have not had one pie pizza,
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: you were doing yourself a disservice. If you visit Buffalo
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: from out of town and you have not gotten one
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: pie pizza, you were doing yourself a disc service. Sweet sauce,
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: pie cup and char pepperoni. When you get different toppings,
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: they chop them all up and sprinkle them evenly across
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: the pie. They make their own homemade blue cheese. They
- 2:05:07Speaker 1: have a catering division where they have all these awesome
- 2:05:09Speaker 1: chicken and rice dishes and mac and cheeses. They make
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: a great breakfast pizza, they make a great salad. Everything
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: they touch seriously is phenomenal from a food standpoint. And
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: like I say all the time, they're really good people
- 2:05:21Speaker 1: making really good food. I say they're really good people
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: because all the drives and initiatives and everything that they
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: do for the community at large. Toys for Tots, which
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: is happening now in the holiday season. Get yourself down there,
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: bring some toys, get some tickets to get entered and
- 2:05:34Speaker 1: raffled in the raffle for some prizes. You know, partying
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: with the SPCA, the Alzheimer's Foundation, Roswell and the Knockout
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: Cancer all of these things that they do. It's community focused.
- 2:05:46Speaker 1: It's you know, really just kindness focus. They do a
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: really good job giving back. And that's aside from just
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: having awesome pizza and awesome food all the time. So
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: if you have not gotten yourself from One Pie Pizza
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: aka Joe de Rosa, you need to get yourself some
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: One Pie Pizza. I don't say that they're the best
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: pizza in Buffalo because they sponsored the show. They sponsored
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: the show because I truly think they are the best
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: pizza in Buffalo. So get yourself some One Pie Pizza.
- 2:06:09Speaker 1: You would not be disappointed. Online menu can be found
