- 0:00Good evening.
- 0:07Running just a few minutes behind and I appreciate ~ Justin stepping
- 0:11in and starting us off with a song.
- 0:13If you would take your Bibles and open them to John chapter four.
- 0:22We're going to be continuing our study of worship and of the things pertaining
- 0:27to worship as we've been doing for the last few weeks.
- 0:32And we're going to jump into the New Testament to look at
- 0:37a few principles that Jesus establishes while he is on this earth.
- 0:43But let's begin with a word of prayer and then we'll get into our class.
- 0:48Our gracious Father in heaven,
- 0:50we come before the throne grateful for your mercy,
- 0:54your grace, your everlasting kindness.
- 0:57We're grateful for your love that has shown been shown to
- 1:02us in sending your son to die on the cross for our sins that we might have
- 1:07the hope of eternal life.
- 1:10Lord, we are mindful of the difficulties that individuals face
- 1:16on a daily basis. We're mindful of the struggles that come with health,
- 1:20the struggles that come with age,
- 1:23the struggles that come with work.
- 1:26Lord, we pray that in all of our human endeavors you will grant us your mercy
- 1:32and your grace, knowing that we strive in these areas imperfectly.
- 1:37But Lord, we are also grateful for your word,
- 1:41for its timeless nature,
- 1:44for the revelation which teaches us both how to live and how to serve you
- 1:50in a way that is acceptable.
- 1:52And Lord, we pray that we might strive diligently to apply the things that
- 1:57are in your word to our lives.
- 1:59All this we pray and ask in Jesus' name.
- 2:01Amen.
- 2:06In John chapter four,
- 2:09we find Jesus and
- 2:14he travels through Samaria. He goes
- 2:19to the place where the text tells
- 2:24us he needed to go, verse four.
- 2:28He needed to go through Samaria.
- 2:33So he came to the city of Samaria,
- 2:35which is called Sichar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
- 2:41Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore,
- 2:46being wearied from his journey,
- 2:48sat thus by the well, it was about the sixth hour.
- 2:52A woman of Samaria came to draw water,
- 2:55Jesus said to her, Give me a drink.
- 2:58For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
- 3:03Then the woman of Samaria said to him,
- 3:05How is it that you, being a Jew,
- 3:07ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?
- 3:11For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
- 3:15As you see this event transpire and you
- 3:20see the things surrounding it,
- 3:22Jesus is by himself at the moment that this occurs.
- 3:27His disciples have gone to buy food in the city.
- 3:32They have gone to acquire these things,
- 3:35and the indication is they will bring them back to him.
- 3:39So as he sits there by the well,
- 3:43a woman comes to draw water. Now,
- 3:47the sixth hour of the day is not the typical time for the drawing of water.
- 3:53That's usually done in an earlier hour of the day.
- 3:56But she arrives to draw water,
- 3:59and Jesus.
- 4:02Requests of her when she arrives,
- 4:04give me something to drink. As the text tells us,
- 4:09she is surprised,
- 4:13might put it that way. How is it that you,
- 4:18being Jew, ask of me a drink? ~
- 4:25And the text tells us that the Jews had no dealing with the Samaritans.
- 4:32Now, who are the Samaritans?
- 4:42Okay.
- 4:59So ~ much like some businesses,
- 5:01they'll figure out they've got one group that is causing problems in their company,
- 5:06and so they'll split up that group and they'll put one of them here and
- 5:10one of them here and one of them here,
- 5:11and what they they they may not be able to get rid of them,
- 5:14but they could sure separate them.
- 5:16Well, that's what the Assyrians' policy was as a conquering nation,
- 5:21is the people that they left alive,
- 5:23of course. ~ they would cart away the people who were originally from a particular
- 5:29Land and carry them off and split them up and disperse them across
- 5:35the entire nation. And then they'd take people from other lands and they'd
- 5:39do the same thing and disperse them across the entire nation.
- 5:42And so ~ the Samaritans were a half-Jew or part Jew,
- 5:48part Gentile, intermarried group of people that were living in the land.
- 5:55Now, when we say that.
- 5:59Bear in mind, it's not as though the rest of the nation were somehow,
- 6:05shall we say, of pure Israelite stock.
- 6:09Were they?
- 6:12Now, if they had been obedient to God's commandments concerning marrying within
- 6:17the nations that were in the land and intermarrying with them and
- 6:22not giving their children to those nations and not taking their children
- 6:26for their sons and daughters ~ from those nations,
- 6:30they would have been. Except that's not exactly how the nation operated,
- 6:37was it?
- 6:39So this is quite a bit the height of hypocrisy that the Jews would have nothing
- 6:45to do with the Samaritans because they weren't a hundred percent Jews,
- 6:50because neither were the Jews after they had intermarried with
- 6:56all of the nations that were around them.
- 6:59Now, there are points in the Israelite history where some of that is cleared out.
- 7:04For instance, in I believe the book of Nehemiah,
- 7:07where Nehemiah will have them put away their ~ their ~ families that
- 7:14are ~ not from Israelite descent because as he brings back
- 7:21~ or returns back to the land,
- 7:23he discovers what is going on,
- 7:24says, Listen, this is exactly what got us put in Babylon to begin with,
- 7:28and now you're going right back to your old ways.
- 7:30~
- 7:32The fact of the matter is the Samaritans were considered to be worse than dogs.
- 7:36They were considered to be the people you would absolutely not spend any time with.
- 7:42And to the the perspective of that,
- 7:46the Jews would cross the Jordan River to go up on the other side of
- 7:51the Jordan River and then cross back over the Jordan River a second time
- 7:55to go to Galilee, so they wouldn't go through the land of the Samaritans.
- 7:59That's how much they disapproved of the Samaritans.
- 8:02So the woman is noticeably surprised when
- 8:08a Jew asks of her, a Samaritan,
- 8:12for a drink of water.
- 8:14Going back to the text, Jesus answered and said to her,
- 8:17If you knew the gift of God and who it was ~ and who it is,
- 8:22who says to you, Give me a drink,
- 8:25you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.
- 8:29The woman said to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with,
- 8:32and the well is deep. Where then do you get that living water?
- 8:38She she i i i is confused,
- 8:41first surprised, then confused,
- 8:44because he says he can give her something to drink,
- 8:48and that the gift that he could give her would be the gift of God.
- 8:57But he doesn't have anything to draw the water with.
- 8:59Now I don't know in her mind what she had imagined that somehow he would draw
- 9:05up water with some other method that would be better water than what
- 9:09she could draw up out of the same well.
- 9:12Didn't make a whole lot of sense there.
- 9:14But the fact of the matter is she sees an obvious problem.
- 9:18You have no utensil to do this with.
- 9:20How are you going to do that?
- 9:24by the way, that that should probably tell us a little bit about the nature
- 9:28of the well and how it was ~ structured in that you had to bring your
- 9:34own tools to bring the water up.
- 9:37it wasn't just that ~ the well was there waiting for you to you know,
- 9:42you see the old West idea of a well and it's got the bucket and
- 9:46the bucket goes down, the bucket comes back up,
- 9:48there's water in the bucket. That wasn't it,
- 9:50because otherwise Jesus could have got his own water and the woman wouldn't have.
- 9:54made that the the statement. So not that kind of well.
- 9:57Now notice further, we we see
- 10:02in the text she says, Are you greater than our father Jacob,
- 10:09who gave us the well and drank from it himself as well
- 10:15as his sons and his livestock?
- 10:18So who is she holding to as a as a ancestor from the past?
- 10:24Jacob. It's interesting that
- 10:30the description here is of Jacob,
- 10:35but the text earlier tells us that Jacob gave the well to who?
- 10:43Joseph. Now the reason why I point that
- 10:47out is Joseph's descendants who would have actually possessed
- 10:54the land, because you remember Joseph didn't,
- 10:56right? Joseph was in Egypt from probably age 18 until he died.
- 11:02So Joseph personally never possessed the land.
- 11:07But Joseph's descendants would have,
- 11:10except Joseph's descendants lived underneath what law?
- 11:22The law of Moses. So Joseph's descendants lived under
- 11:28the law of Moses. Did the Samaritans claim to live under the law of Moses?
- 11:32Shake your head this way.
- 11:38So under the law of patriarchy that Jacob lived under,
- 11:45where could you put an altar?
- 11:54Think back to the days of Abraham,
- 11:56Isaac, Jacob. Correct.
- 12:00You could put an altar,
- 12:04so you go look at Abraham. What did it what was Abraham's practice when
- 12:08he left Ur of the Chaldees and God said you go here?
- 12:12Wherever Abraham went, what do we read in the text that Abraham did?
- 12:17He built an altar. So under
- 12:25Principled descendants of Jacob,
- 12:29they could have their altar where they wanted it.
- 12:32They could say, Hey, our father is Jacob.
- 12:36We don't know about this whole Moses folk,
- 12:38but our father is Jacob, and this well originated with him,
- 12:44and where we worship is going to originate with him.
- 12:50In contrast, you have the Jews who say,
- 12:54No, you have to worship in Jerusalem.
- 12:56True or false? All people,
- 13:01everywhere, from every nation,
- 13:04during the time of the law of Moses,
- 13:07had to worship God, in order to worship him faithfully,
- 13:11had to worship God in Jerusalem.
- 13:16True or false. All people everywhere from every nation had to worship in Jerusalem.
- 13:22False. Okay? It's important as we go through the text that
- 13:28we do not take what
- 13:34we often envision about the Old Testament.
- 13:38And more what actually was the case in the Old Testament.
- 13:41In the Old Testament, and Paul deals with this significantly in the Book of Romans,
- 13:46there are two parallel laws going on.
- 13:49One law for who? The Jews.
- 13:52For the Israelites, for the descendants of Abraham,
- 13:57through exclusively Isaac,
- 14:00and through exclusively Jacob.
- 14:05And through exclusively his sons.
- 14:08Okay? There was a law given to them.
- 14:13And that law said that they were to worship wherever
- 14:19God put his name. Now,
- 14:23when they initially came into the land of Israel,
- 14:25where did God put his name? Shiloh.
- 14:29Who did God tell?
- 14:34that he was going to put his name there and that they would worship there,
- 14:38if you remember back to your old testament history.
- 15:01Right? so even before that though,
- 15:05you remember when Jacob has taken the birthright?
- 15:10And Jacob Jacob leaves for fear of his life from his brother,
- 15:15and Jacob goes to a place called Bethel,
- 15:19and Jacob lays his head down and sleeps and puts his head upon a rock.
- 15:24And what does Jacob see in the vision while he is sleeping?
- 15:33Angels ascending and descending from this place.
- 15:35And God will tell Jacob, when he returns,
- 15:40he will build an altar there. The indication,
- 15:44at least from what I have studied and what I understand,
- 15:47is that the location, basically,
- 15:50that the tabernacle will be built,
- 15:53will be in Bethel, in Shiloh,
- 15:56where Jacob saw that vision.
- 16:00That is the first settled location for the tabernacle in Israel.
- 16:05It is a returning to a place where
- 16:12God said, I'm going to put my name there.
- 16:15Now the tabernacle will remain in Bethel,
- 16:18in Shiloh, until the occasion where the Ark of the Covenant is taken,
- 16:25is possessed by the Philistines because of
- 16:30the actions of Eli and his sons.
- 16:33They carted it off to war and they lost it.
- 16:37It remains in the Philistines until the Philistines return it back into Israel,
- 16:41although it doesn't go back to the tabernacle.
- 16:45In one individual's house. It remains there all the way up until the days of David.
- 16:50And it is during the moving of it back to Jerusalem,
- 16:54the new location where now the tabernacle has been moved by David from Bethel
- 17:00to Jerusalem, that now you find Jerusalem being the location of worship.
- 17:06So from the days of Moses all the way to the days
- 17:10of David was Jerusalem the place of worship.
- 17:16No. Matter of fact, till the days of David,
- 17:19Jerusalem wasn't even an Israelite city.
- 17:21It was a city that belonged to
- 17:24the Jebusites until ~ David essentially told his man,
- 17:30one of you go take it. And they did.
- 17:33So Jerusalem wasn't the place of worship in Jacob's day,
- 17:39wasn't the place of worship in Moses' day.
- 17:44Wasn't the place of worship in Joshua's day,
- 17:47wasn't the place of worship in the days of the judges,
- 17:51wasn't the place of worship in the days of King Saul.
- 17:55It is only towards the end of David's reign,
- 18:00middle towards end, last half,
- 18:03that Jerusalem becomes the place of worship.
- 18:08And it is only culminated as the place of worship when the temple
- 18:12is built by Solomon, the next king.
- 18:15But, here's the interesting piece that matters.
- 18:20And it's going to matter for the remainder of the discussion.
- 18:23It was the place of worship where God said,
- 18:27in the days of David and in the days of Solomon,
- 18:31I am putting my name here.
- 18:39In the days of Jacob, God said to Jacob,
- 18:43you can worship me here. In the days of David,
- 18:48God said to David, You can worship me here.
- 18:52In the days of Solomon,
- 18:55God said, You can worship me here.
- 18:57The reason why I bring this up is it's important to realize that throughout
- 19:02the existence of the Israelites,
- 19:04who
- 19:05Gets to decide where the place of worship is.
- 19:09God. We went through this discussion a bit last week,
- 19:15and that is this core principle of God gets to decide.
- 19:19God gets to determine what is acceptable
- 19:25and what is not in worship. Now,
- 19:28notice
- 19:31As the woman asked, Are you greater than our father Jacob,
- 19:35who gave us the well, and drank from it himself,
- 19:38as well as his sons and his livestock?
- 19:40Jesus answered and said to her,
- 19:42Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again.
- 19:44But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give them will never thirst.
- 19:48But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain
- 19:53of water springing up into everlasting life.
- 19:56The woman said to him, Sir, you Sir,
- 19:58give me this water, that I may not thirst.
- 20:01Nor come here to draw. Jesus said to her,
- 20:04Go call your husband and come here.
- 20:05The woman answered and said, I have no husband.
- 20:08Jesus said to her, You have well said,
- 20:10I have no husband, for you have had five husbands,
- 20:13and the one whom you now have is not your husband in that you spoke truly.
- 20:18The woman said to him, Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
- 20:22Now
- 20:26As we move into this part of the discussion,
- 20:28bear in mind that she is observing these things.
- 20:32She is hearing what he is saying.
- 20:34She is trying to comprehend, though she is working from a different mental model
- 20:39than Jesus is.
- 20:41So first she wants to know how you can do this physical thing,
- 20:45get down in this well and get water.
- 20:47Second, she wants to know, are you greater than Jacob,
- 20:50who gave us the well, and his sons who drank from it?
- 20:54Third thing she wants to know is,
- 20:57can you give me the water? You're offering it to me.
- 21:02I'm all right, I'm a buyer. Give it,
- 21:04give me some. And Jesus immediately turns to the question of go call your husband.
- 21:13She answers appropriately that she has none,
- 21:18but Jesus said, You're correct,
- 21:22you don't. You've had five, and the one you have now isn't your husband.
- 21:28She immediately realizes as she's gone from you have
- 21:33no physical tool to you have not you can't possibly be of greater stature
- 21:39to now.
- 21:42Y you must be a spokesperson for God.
- 21:47The moment she comes to a realization that he is a spokesperson for God,
- 21:51some things start to change. And she says,
- 21:55I perceive that you are a prophet.
- 21:56Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,
- 21:59and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.
- 22:03If you're a prophet, if you speak on behalf of God,
- 22:09then I want to bring up the age-old question that us and your people argue about
- 22:14all the time.
- 22:21She makes a statement. Have you noticed sometimes statements are questions?
- 22:28She says, I perceive you are a prophet.
- 22:30Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,
- 22:32and you, Jews, say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.
- 22:37Period. Not question mark.
- 22:43Have you ever heard the question?
- 22:44or the statement, ~ you're from the Church of Christ.
- 22:48You're those people who believe you're the only ones going to heaven.
- 22:51It's not a question, except it is.
- 22:55So the woman says,
- 22:59Hmm, you know what you Jews always say?
- 23:02You Jews always tell us we're worshiping in the wrong place.
- 23:07Now, as we get into the discussion.
- 23:12And Jesus' answer, ask yourself one more time,
- 23:15was the place where all people
- 23:22of all nations everywhere were commanded to worship in the days of
- 23:28the law of Moses, Jerusalem. And the answer is no.
- 23:32Could a Babylonian who was born
- 23:39and raised in Babylon
- 23:41Who met Daniel in the period of his exile
- 23:47was taught concerning Jehovah and began worshiping and being obedient
- 23:53to Jehovah in the land of the Chaldeans,
- 23:57a place where Abraham came from.
- 23:59Could that Babylonian worship
- 24:04God faithfully in Babylon? Yes.
- 24:10Yes he could.
- 24:13The law of Moses was given to what people?
- 24:16The Israelites.
- 24:21It pertained to them. Now, it also pertained to all those
- 24:25who converted to their nation.
- 24:29Give an example of an old testament person who converted to become an Israelite.
- 24:38Take I heard two different answers and Rahab.
- 24:41Ruth by nature of marriage,
- 24:45Rahab by nature of being obedient to God and I guess eventually through marriage.
- 24:51~ a New Testament example.
- 24:56The Ethiopian eunuch. All indications because he was going or coming from Jerusalem
- 25:02where he had gone to worship is that the Ethiopian eunuch was a proselyte.
- 25:08He was one who had converted to the religion in the nation of Israel
- 25:13in the religious sense, though he was still an Ethiopian nationally.
- 25:18Okay?
- 25:20So for those individuals who bound themselves under the law,
- 25:24to use Paul's terminology, where were they to worship three times a year?
- 25:32In Jerusalem. They were not to build places of worship all over the land,
- 25:39all over the place. They were not to build altars to God and offer sacrifices
- 25:44on every high hill, as the Old Testament says.
- 25:47They were to worship in Jerusalem,
- 25:50where God put his name. Okay?
- 25:56But everyone who wasn't an Israelite.
- 25:58So if you think about the world's population,
- 26:02how much of the world's population lives in Palestine,
- 26:04Israel, ~ and was of the twelve tribes of Jacob?
- 26:10Pretty small amount.
- 26:15All those people were never given a commandment to worship in Jerusalem.
- 26:19And yet, if they worshiped God faithfully,
- 26:22their worship was still accepted.
- 26:23Their worship was still in accordance with His will.
- 26:27Under a different law. Okay,
- 26:30so bear in mind as the discussion moves forward,
- 26:33Jesus is fully aware there's two laws.
- 26:36But these Samaritans,
- 26:39are they Israelites or are they not?
- 26:44And that's where the rub is. Because the Samaritans wanted
- 26:50to be Israelites, go all the way back to the days of Nehemiah.
- 26:54The Samaritans wanted the position of being considered part
- 27:00of the nation, but being distinct at the same time,
- 27:05they refused to go worship in Jerusalem.
- 27:08No, we can worship here, where our ancestors worshiped.
- 27:15So notice what Jesus says. Woman,
- 27:18believe me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain
- 27:22nor in Jerusalem worship the Father.
- 27:25Jesus immediately responds with,
- 27:30There's something coming you don't understand.
- 27:39Jesus immediately tracks her forward to the truth of
- 27:45the kingdom that He came to establish.
- 27:48But he then says, You worship what you do not know.
- 27:53We know what we worship for salvation is of the Jews.
- 28:01When Jesus says that salvation is of the Jews and that they know what they worship,
- 28:08is he indicating that at the time that he was walking this earth everyone
- 28:15who could possibly be saved was a Jew?
- 28:20No.
- 28:23Rather, his point is a historical one.
- 28:28That the origination of salvation,
- 28:34that is, the one whom God was sending,
- 28:37because you're going to watch the conversation immediately,
- 28:39head straight towards the Messiah.
- 28:42The one through whom salvation is coming is of the Jews,
- 28:49is essentially what he's saying.
- 28:52Jesus says, You worship what you do not know,
- 28:55we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews,
- 28:58but the hour is coming and now is when the true worshipers will worship
- 29:03the Father in spirit and in truth,
- 29:06for the Father is seeking such to worship him.
- 29:08God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship
- 29:12in spirit and truth.
- 29:17The woman said to him, I know that the Messiah.
- 29:19Now notice she she she understood what he was saying.
- 29:22When he said salvation is of the Jews,
- 29:26she said, I know you're talking about the Messiah.
- 29:29She says, I know that the Messiah is coming,
- 29:33who is called Christ. When he comes,
- 29:35he will tell us all things.
- 29:38Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am He.
- 29:46So a few things we want to gather from this in regards to worship.
- 29:50Number one, Jesus reveals the nature of the kingdom.
- 29:54That the kingdom was not like the law of Moses.
- 30:00That the thing that God was bringing in the days of
- 30:05the Messiah was not like the Old Testament law of Israel.
- 30:11Turn to Jeremiah chapter 31.
- 30:26Jeremiah chapter thirty one, a passage which the Hebrew writer in making
- 30:30the same line of argumentation concerning the old and the new law will argue from is
- 30:36And we'll quote in detail. We read in Jeremiah 31 and in verse 31,
- 30:41Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord,
- 30:43when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with
- 30:47the house of Judah. Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers
- 30:52in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt.
- 30:56Notice God tells Israel through Jeremiah,
- 30:59When I make this new covenant,
- 31:01it's not going to be like the old one.
- 31:07It is going to be inherently different from the law of Moses.
- 31:12Now they're not going to fully appreciate that,
- 31:14but Jesus is telling this woman:
- 31:16the thing that God is doing through the Jews,
- 31:21through the Messiah, is inherently different from what
- 31:27you have always known as what the Jews worship.
- 31:32But he goes on to say in Jeremiah chapter 31,
- 31:35verse 32: not according to the covenant.
- 31:37That I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand
- 31:40to lead them out of the land of Egypt,
- 31:41my covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,
- 31:46says the Lord. Now notice something else.
- 31:49Jeremiah accuses
- 31:53the Jews of breaking the covenant.
- 31:58Jeremiah makes it clear that it is not the Lord
- 32:03who is breaking the covenant.
- 32:07That it was the Jews who had done that.
- 32:10So when Jesus says to the woman,
- 32:15We know what we worship, you don't know what you worship.
- 32:20He is not arguing that the Jews have always done it right.
- 32:25He is in no way arguing that the Jews have it all figured out.
- 32:30Rather, he is establishing that there was a God.
- 32:36Given command that was being followed in
- 32:42the worship in Jerusalem. That God had said for them
- 32:48to do this, and that with the Samaritans their worship
- 32:54was not ordained by God.
- 32:57It was not commanded that they worship there in that mountain.
- 33:05They were not given that instruction by the mouth of a prophet or by
- 33:10the mouth of the Lord. So Jesus is establishing the source of authority.
- 33:15The Jews know what we do because God said,
- 33:19Do this. You have no such command.
- 33:23You are arguing back to your forefathers.
- 33:26Well, Jacob did, therefore it's okay.
- 33:30Now notice what else.
- 33:34We find in Jeremiah. Verse 33.
- 33:37But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,
- 33:42says the Lord. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts,
- 33:47and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
- 33:52Where was
- 33:55the law written previously?
- 34:00In the days of Moses.
- 34:05All right, initially Ten Commandments on tablets of stone,
- 34:08and then Moses wrote down
- 34:14The Pentateuch, Genesis through Deuteronomy.
- 34:18The law was in written form.
- 34:22Now, the point Jeremiah is making is not that there won't be a written law.
- 34:29Rather that the nature of the covenant is going to go from one where it's
- 34:35a law that you could go in and open the the Ark of the Covenant and pull
- 34:41out a scroll, or go into the tabernacle,
- 34:43or go into a storage place and pull out a scroll.
- 34:46In contrast to that,
- 34:49you have God saying, No, I'm going to put it in their heart and in their mind.
- 34:57Is going to be something internalized and not just externalized.
- 35:02But he goes on to say, he says,
- 35:05My law shall be in their minds and be written in their hearts,
- 35:08and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
- 35:12This is an interesting contrast to,
- 35:15by the way, the writer Hosea, who will describe Israel
- 35:21as not my people from God.
- 35:26He says, No more shall every man teach his neighbor,
- 35:29and every man his brother, saying,
- 35:31Know the Lord, for they shall all know me,
- 35:34from the least of them to the greatest of them,
- 35:36says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will remember
- 35:42no more. God says,
- 35:45Here's how you've always had it.
- 35:48You're born in the covenant.
- 35:53You are birthed into a nation,
- 35:55and by blood you are a part of the covenant.
- 35:59After you're born, somebody's got to teach you what the covenant is.
- 36:04Because you didn't have any sake.
- 36:06You were born an Israelite. So now you have to be taught the covenant.
- 36:11He said, That's not how my kingdom's going to be.
- 36:15This new covenant, everyone who's a part of it will know.
- 36:22The covenant. They will all know me.
- 36:27In other words, the knowledge will come before the birth.
- 36:31They're not going to be born into this covenant by physical birth,
- 36:37but rather they're going to be born by spiritual birth.
- 36:40Interestingly, back over in John chapter 3,
- 36:42Jesus and Nicodemus, just in the prior chapter,
- 36:46before Jesus heads to Samaria,
- 36:47has have had a discussion on this very topic.
- 36:52Because Nicodemus comes to Jesus in John chapter 3 and says,
- 36:56This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,
- 36:59Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God,
- 37:01for no one can do the signs that you do unless God is with him.
- 37:04Jesus said, Most assuredly I say to you,
- 37:05unless one is born again. That's the point of Jeremiah.
- 37:12You've got to be born into the covenant.
- 37:15And it's not by physical birth.
- 37:19Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
- 37:22Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old?
- 37:26Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?
- 37:29Jesus said, Most assuredly I say to you,
- 37:31unless one is born of water and of the Spirit,
- 37:34he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
- 37:37Jesus says, You you're going to have to go through a new birth,
- 37:43and it's not going to be your mother's birth canal.
- 37:47You're going to have to go through a new birth in water and the Spirit
- 37:53in order to enter the kingdom of God.
- 37:55Because my covenant, God said,
- 37:59is a new covenant. And everyone who's in my covenant will know
- 38:06me. So as you examine and kind of piece these things
- 38:12together, understand something about worship.
- 38:17Under the Old Testament law, there was a set of laws
- 38:22and ordinances for the Israelite.
- 38:25There was a set of worship commandments for the Israelite.
- 38:30There was a set of commandments inside that Old Testament covenant.
- 38:35And the Israelite was obligated to keep those laws,
- 38:40those ordinances, those commandments.
- 38:41Those same commands were not given to Israel.
- 38:46all of the Gentile world. And so they lived under a different set
- 38:51of laws and ordinances. Jesus' point to this woman is,
- 38:57that's not going to be the case moving forward.
- 39:00There's going to be one set of laws and one set of ordinances.
- 39:05And that all those who worship God are going to worship
- 39:10Him in spirit and in truth.
- 39:15Because they're going to be a part of a new covenant.
- 39:18They're going to be part of a new relationship.
- 39:20And they're all going to know God.
- 39:23You're not going to go around saying,
- 39:26hey, you're part of the covenant,
- 39:28but let me introduce you to who God is.
- 39:29It's not how it's not how it's going to work.
- 39:32It's going to begin, let me introduce you to who God is,
- 39:35so you can be a part of the covenant.
- 39:36Okay? We need to understand that under the Old Testament.
- 39:43Jesus makes it clear God got to decide where worship happened and where
- 39:50it was acceptable. Under the New Testament,
- 39:52God gets to decide where worship's going to happen and where it's acceptable.
- 39:57But one last point,
- 40:01and that is this. Go back to what we read in verse 23.
- 40:07But the hour is coming and now is when the true worshipers
- 40:13Will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.
- 40:18For God is seeking such to worship Him.
- 40:23The last thing I want you to hold on to
- 40:26is this God
- 40:29is actively seeking true worship.
- 40:34God is looking for a people
- 40:41For individuals throughout the world who are willing
- 40:46to worship him in spirit and in truth.
- 40:51And we have to look at ourselves and examine ourselves and wonder,
- 40:56not wonder, but examine ourselves and consider,
- 41:00are we?
- 41:03Do we worship God in spirit and in truth?
- 41:07And can we sit down and evaluate whether or not we do?
- 41:12Because we are responsible for our end of the covenant,
- 41:17just like the Israelites were,
- 41:20and just like the Samaritans were.
- 41:23We're responsible for our part and for making sure we're
- 41:29in accordance with God's commandments.
- 41:31Okay? Thank you for your attention.
