Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: I've had it with small carparks
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We will talk air force planes and trappers before six,
- 0:02Speaker 1: But this morning I have had it with car parks
- 0:06Speaker 1: so small you couldn't fit a shopping trolley in them.
- 0:09Speaker 1: What exactly do they think we're driving go carts? No,
- 0:12Speaker 1: people are buying big cars, utes, station wagons, SUVs. They
- 0:17Speaker 1: are all hanging over the white lines on the side,
- 0:20Speaker 1: or they're punching out the back onto the road behind them.
- 0:22Speaker 1: The Spinoff wrote about this problem last week the Civic
- 0:25Speaker 1: and Auckland is one of the worst offenders, and yesterday,
- 0:29Speaker 1: driving along I saw a pregnant woman trying to squeeze herself,
- 0:33Speaker 1: a handbag and an unborn baby out of a sedan
- 0:36Speaker 1: and a building car park. She was literally using the
- 0:39Speaker 1: handbag as a shield to protect her belly from the
- 0:42Speaker 1: car door. Are we trying to send these people into
- 0:45Speaker 1: early labor? Apparently, new cars are getting a centimeter wider
- 0:50Speaker 1: every two years. People like bigger cars, they feel safer,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and we're also getting way more obese. We're getting fatter,
- 0:56Speaker 1: so we literally can't fit into a Honda Civic anymore.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Impact protection on new cars is apparently taking up lots
- 1:03Speaker 1: of the extra space. Are councils and Wilson's doing anything
- 1:07Speaker 1: about this. No, they're not. Are we expected to just
- 1:11Speaker 1: bend fold and stretch our way into our cars like Ninja's?
- 1:15Speaker 1: Are they going to pay for the physio appointments? Should
- 1:18Speaker 1: we take yoga classes? A Colchester council Listen. In the UK,
- 1:23Speaker 1: they've apparently spent a million pounds repainting white lines to
- 1:26Speaker 1: make their car parks bigger. Good on them. The panel
- 1:29Speaker 1: beaters must love it. We need fewer parks and more room.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So let's start a movement New Zealand. Let's stop this
- 1:37Speaker 1: madness together. We can help that pregnant woman. We can
- 1:41Speaker 1: save our bad backs. I've got one our dicky knees,
- 1:44Speaker 1: the elderly, for goodness sakes, give me common sense and
- 1:48Speaker 1: a bigger car park. For more from Early Edition with
