Transcript
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: On this episode of This Week in Hockey East, we preview the border battle between Maine and UNH tonight, as well as go through another top 15 matchup between Hockey East opponents on the woman's side.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: And we have some standouts we want to get to as well as our Jersey Mike's player of the week.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: That's all coming up on this week in Hockey East.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Hi, everyone.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Welcome to another episode of This Week in Hockey East.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Great to be back with you.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: We have some rivalry matchups to talk about with two Nesson games on our schedule this week.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Let's jump right in to kind of maybe the underrated rivalry of college hockey, Maine and New Hampshire.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: That was one of the special parts to me about last year with both of these teams being as good as they were, was because it kind of reignited this rivalry in the national consciousness.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: And it really deserves to be there, Bridget.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Let's start with Maine, who really bounced back nicely last week against BU.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they bounced back against BU.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: They end up back in the number five spot in the Useho.com poll.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: They had a win uh in a shootout loss against BU.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: And Maine outshot Boston University in both games in that weekend.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: In total, it was 66 to 47 uh shots total for Maine in favor of them over the Terriers.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: And uh their special teams also continued to roll.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: They had three power play goals and a short-handed goal against BU.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: You could argue that the special teams matchup in that series was what determined uh Maine coming out on top uh because obviously three power play goals means your power plays clicking pretty well.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: And as of right now, they have the second best power play percentage in hockey east.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: That's 25.5%, and their penalty kill, third best in Hockey East as well, 87.5% on the PK.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: So special teams were strong in that weekend series against Boston University.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: And they're coming into this game against UNH.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: It's just a one-off, it's just the Friday night game.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then they don't see each other again for several months until the weekend of uh Valentine's Day, February 14th and 15th.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: So that's that's romantic.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Um and so a win today would give Maine their first win at the Whittime Center since February 2nd, 2019.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: It's been a long time since they've won out in New Hampshire.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: So even though Maine won the most important game last year, they've struggled when they've gone up to Durham to play against UNH.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: It's a seven-game road winless streak uh for Maine against the Wildcats.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: And I want to bring up some players to keep an eye on in this series.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: And these some of these are players that have had success against UNH in the past, one of them being Lyndon Breen.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: He's uh Maine's active leading goalscorer against UNH.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: He's got five goals, three assists, and seven points uh in his career against UNH.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: And Josh Nato also has three goals against UNH in his career.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: And then somebody that I feel like we bring up every week, and it's because he continues to impress.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: That's Thomas Freel.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, he has seven of Maine's 12 power play goals.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: He's got 58% of Maine's power play goals this season, and he leads the nation with seven power play goals this year.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: So important to bring him up when we're talking about special teams being a strength of this team.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Well, you look at Thomas Freel, and he's been a big help in that category.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: And in net, Alvin Boya, he's been one of the best goalies in hockey east as well.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Second best in hockey east in goals against average and save percentage behind Balor in both of those categories up at BC.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: So he's continued to have a strong sophomore year.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: He's improved on his stats from his freshman year in both of those categories, a 1.64 goals against average, a 928 save percentage.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: And after today, Maine will kick off a seven-game non-conference stretch next week.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: And they won't be back in conference play until January 10th.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: So that's a long time before Maine plays another hockey east game.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is really interesting this kind of year.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: You get more non-conference games.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: You know, you mentioned the home road stuff with Maine at the Whitemore Center, and it's one of the things that's starting to stand out that we probably don't give enough credit to with this New Hampshire team.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: You know, remember these two teams played each other actually five times last year because they had the exhibition game at Colby College and Waterville, Maine, three in the regular season.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Then, as you mentioned, the Hockey East Tournament.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: The home team won all four of the games outside of the exhibition, right?
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: And, you know, you look at what UNH has started to do at the Whitamore Center.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: We talk about Maine all the time and their home ice advantage at the Alphonda.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And it's deservedly so, right?
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: They've been really good there.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: But UNH now, they were 14-4-1 last year in Durham.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: You go over the last now year plus, they've won 17 of their last 23 games at home, including this season.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And so they're really starting to kind of reignite the wit in the same way that Maine has sort of done that in terms of their home ice advantage and what they've done at Alphonse Arena.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: We've talked a lot of UNH the last couple of weeks.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: We've had them on Ness in a bunch, but I think one thing that stands out, they are three games in a row, unbeaten since the Providence weekend, a win at home, and then a tie against Northeastern on the road last week.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: They only gave up one goal in each of those three games.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And sometimes this early in the season, you try to look at stats, you try to piece it together, but sometimes there's still a small enough sample size where stats don't really tell you the whole picture.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: So you look at UNH, their defense doesn't necessarily stand out statistically, right?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: They allow 2.6 goals allowed per game, middle of the pack, maybe even on the wrong side of the pack.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: But of their 23 total goals they've allowed, 14 of them came in two games, one against Providence and one against Quinnipiac.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: So not that you can just throw those games out by any means, but it does show that this team has some defensive capabilities to be that team that I think we saw last year.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: In seven of their games, they've only allowed nine goals total outside of those two.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: So certainly about finding that consistency to bring it all together every single night defensively.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: But both of these teams, really good at limiting shots.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: They're both top 10 nationally, once again, this year.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: So both of these teams are gonna need to be really, really efficient in order to get through a night like this and a rivalry game between Maine and New Hampshire.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: We have more hockey action on Sunday on Nesson.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Vermont is gonna go and take on UMass.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: We're gonna talk about that on the other side on this week in Hockey East.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to this episode of This Week in Hockey East.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: I'm Bridget Prue here with Eric Galante.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: It's time for us to preview our Sunday matchup on Nesson, a 3 p.m.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: puck drop between UVM and UMass.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to head out to the Mullen Center.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Me and Pierre Maguire have the call for that one.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: And these are two teams that met not that long ago, just two weeks ago.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: They played two games against each other, both pretty close.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: And Eric, why don't you take us through UMass to start things off?
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think sometimes you always look for those games where you say, Hey, I wonder if that's a result we're gonna think about when you and I are doing this show in February and March and look back at a certain team season.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: And I think that Saturday five to one win at Providence for UMass might very well be that game.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And Greg Carvel even said it in his post-game comments.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: You could hear it in his voice.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: He said, I thought everything came together tonight.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: He even said, I'm hoping this will be a springboard for us.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: So, you know, getting that result against Providence after losing a tough two-to-one game the night before, I think is really going to be a big deal for this UMass team.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, we saw a big game from Idar Suniev, who we've talked a little bit about on the show, two goals and an assist.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Remember, he had five goals in the first three games of the season, but had been a little snake-bitten since then.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: So important to see him get going.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Huge for UMass.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, Don Slushmillis had a goal and an assist.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Bruins draft pick, as folks know.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: That's already his fifth multi-point game of the season.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: But then maybe the biggest thing was just what UMass has gotten in goal last weekend.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Michael Harable was awesome on Saturday.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: 34 saves, just one goal allowed.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And that followed Jackson Irving getting his first career start on Thursday.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: And he played pretty well between that start Thursday and the game before where he came in for Harabble.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: 37 saves on 39 shots.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: So talk about a good problem to have now all of a sudden for Greg Carville.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: That's become a strength once again, it seems like, over the last couple of games.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Bruno, you're going to talk about UVM.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: That's the Nessant game on Sunday, but don't sleep on the Friday game that UMass has.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Later today, they'll host Harvard, right after we're done on our show.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: This is a Harvard team that's much, much improved.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I got to see them in person last week against Cornell.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Real rebuilding year last year, as we know.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: But the record maybe doesn't show how much better they are this year, but the eye test does.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: They're 2-2-1.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: They had a lead against Cornell, couldn't quite hold it, ended up being a tie.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: But the thing that really stands out, they're averaging 34 shots a game.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Harvard only outshot their opponents three times last year.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: This year they've done it in every single game, including against Cornell.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: So a much different Harvard team on the road at UMass.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: That's going to be a really interesting game for UMass Friday before they then get to the Vermont test that you'll talk about on Sunday.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I want to talk about the series as a whole so far as well, between UMass and Vermont.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: But we'll start out first uh with what Vermont did most recently.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: They dropped both of their games against number 15 UMass Low last weekend in regulation.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, and that's a hot UMass Lowell team right now.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: That is a team where you're running into really great goaltending with Henry Welsh, who we're gonna talk about later on in the program as well when we preview his matchup.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: But uh to look into this series deeper, but the two games that we've already seen between the Catamounts and the Minutemen, game one was a 3-3 tie, like you mentioned.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: It goes to a shootout.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: UVM ends up winning really tight, entertaining game all the way up in Burlington, Vermont.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: And then game two, the score looks worse than this really was for UMass.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: It was a four to nothing win for UVM, but only two of those goals were true goals.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: The other two were empty netters, so it pads the score at the end of the game to make it look like a bigger loss than it really was.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Like you mentioned, Robble comes out of the net after giving up those two goals with four uh 14 minutes into the game, and then Jackson Irving comes in and plays lights out.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: He made one of the best saves you'll see.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: They had to review it to see if he actually did keep it out, and somehow he did.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: So close in shots in both of those games as well.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Axel Mangbo on the UVM side of things uh got a shutout against uh UMass in that second game of the series.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: And I think goaltending will be a big talking point in this series because for UVM right now, they're kind of bouncing back and forth between their goaltenders.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: They've been playing uh Keenan Rancier, they've been playing Axl Mangbo, but actually all three goaltenders got uh some time on ice in the series against UMass Low last weekend, including Connor McKenzie, who got his first uh minutes of the season as well.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: And uh in terms of what the goal scoring looked like in this series, UVM had seven goals from seven different goal scorers against UMass.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: It was coming from throughout the lineup.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it should be a really interesting game, especially when you get a third so soon after the other two.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: Uh good stuff this weekend on the Nest and Slate, good stuff as well around Hockey East.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: We're gonna talk more about that when we come back.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: It's time to go around Hockey East, presented by Boston Harbor Hotel.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: Visit Hockey East online for your chance to win championship tickets and a two-night stay at the Boston Harbor Hotel.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: So it's time to take a look around some of the women's matchups this week.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: I want to start us out with a top 15 matchup between number 14 UConn and number 11 Boston College.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Right now, Boston College is the highest ranked team of all the women's teams in the hockey east side of things.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: And uh they're keeping pace right there, staying at number 11 once again this week.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: They split a weekend against BU.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: They had an overtime win at Againis, and then they dropped their game on home ice at Kelly Rank uh on the Saturday game.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: But an overall good way to gauge where they are in the conference, because right now BU is the top team in Hockey East.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: They've been leading the way in the standing.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: So being able to play as well as they did, especially in that Friday game against BU, uh indicates that they're right up there.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: And right now, uh it's BU Northeastern, UConn, and Boston College, the top four teams on the women's side of Hockey East battling for that top position.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: So that means this is not only a matchup between uh two highly ranked teams, it's a matchup between two teams that could be competing for uh the top spot in the Hockey East uh regular season standings.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: And I want to start off with BU.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Their loss on Saturday snapped an eight-game win streak for the Eagles, who are uh rolling with the help of great goaltending by Grace Campbell and contributions from up and down the lineup.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Katie Crowley told us that that's one thing that's helped her team keep the pressure away, especially from veteran players or players that have in the past thought they needed to put the team on their back.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Well, when scoring comes from throughout the lineup, you don't feel that same kind of pressure spread throughout the team.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Everybody's taking a little bit of the load on themselves.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: So that has been a recipe for a success from them.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: They've had scoring from all four lines.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: And on the Yukon side, last week they swept Merrimack.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, they had a 3-2 win Friday and a two to nothing shutout win for Tia Chan on Saturday.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: That's her second shutout of the season.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: She made 13 saves in the game.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: And special teams, uh, though UConn's power play haven't scored in four games, their penalty kill did have a short-handed goal uh this past weekend against Merrimack.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: So the teams meet for game two of the series tomorrow at 6 p.m.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: at UConn's Toscano Family Ice Forum.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we have a couple of other games to talk about, a couple of Hockey East versus ECAC matchups, Providence and Harvard in a rare non-conference home and home.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: And then Merrimack's gonna play two games against RPI.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Starting with Merrimack, we've mentioned this a little bit, but the schedule has just been so brutal, right?
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: They've played 12 games total.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: More than half of those have been against the teams you just mentioned at the top of Hockey East, UConn, BU, and BC.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Um, I do want to point out Maria Lindbergh.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: She scored two goals Friday against UConn.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: She has six goals over her last nine games.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: So it'll be interesting to see if they can keep that going against RPI.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: And then Providence, six, six, and two on the year.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: They tied two really tight defensive games with Vermont last week, with each team getting one extra point in a shootout of the two.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Um, Riken Kirchmeyer scored Providence's lone goal of the weekend.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: She's our night shift all-academic standout.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Points now in eight of 10, goals in four of six.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: She's on pace to set career highs in each offensive category, already six goals and eight assists this year.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: They're going to face a Harvard team that's trying to get back in the win column this year.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: They've dropped five straight, but they do have a couple of nice wins this year against Yale and Yukon.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: So a couple of interesting ECAC versus hockey east matchups this week.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and watching Reiken Kirchmeyer in person, she's one of those uh power forwards on the woman's side of things.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: And she had that regulation goal against UBM.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: She also scored in the shootout win.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, and she's just so strong when she makes her move to the net.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: So I was considering her for this week's Jersey Mikes a sub-above woman's player of the week, but I decided to go with BU's Sydney Healy.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: She had goals in both of BU's games against Boston College this weekend.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: She helped BU pick up four of six potential points towards the Hockey East standing.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: She had a power play goal Friday.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: She had a goal that sealed the win for BU in Saturday's game, uh, put BU up by two and led us to the final three to one score for Boston University in that one.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: So Sydney Healy, our Jersey Mike's a sub-above women's player of the game.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Plenty more to come.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: We're gonna go around Hockey East on the men's side.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: That's next on this week in Hockey East.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome back.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: Let's continue to go around Hockey East.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: We talked briefly about Merrimack last week.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: We're gonna talk a little bit about more about them as they embark on two games against BU over the next couple of weeks, tonight at Aganis, and then next week in Belfast to kick off the friendship four.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: They had a really nice sweep against UConn a couple of weekends ago.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And then even with the loss against the Stonehill team last week in the midweek, though much improved Stonehill team, right?
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: They did have 44 shots in that game.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: So it feels like some momentum offensively is starting to generate here for Merrimack.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Um, Antonio Venudo has scored in two of his last three games.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: He's a Ferris State transfer that got voted captain this year.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Breakout year last year with Ferris State, 12 goals and 26 points.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: That goal total exceeded his career goal total in his first three years.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Another guy, Ethan Bono, we mentioned him a little bit.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: He scored three times against UConn.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Caitlin Fitzpatrick had a goal in back-to-back games.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: So we'll see if some of these guys can start to push Merrimack along a little bit against a BU team that's obviously trying to right the shift here.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: It's hard to believe that BU, this is their first game against an unranked team in more than a month.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: You have to go back to October 18th against UConn.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: So they've played a really difficult schedule.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: They'll play Merrimack this week and a one-off on Friday before going to Northern Ireland next week.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: And I'll preview UConn and UMass Lowell.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: I mentioned this a little earlier in the program.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: UMass Lowell is on a roll right now.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: And they they came into the season unranked for the first three weeks of the season, but then they jumped into the USCHO.com poll in late October and they really haven't looked back.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: They're now up to the number 15 rank in the country.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: And it's because they've gotten off to an eight, two, and oh start.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: And all of those eight wins coming with Henry Welsh in net.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: He was the hockey east goalie of the month for October.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: He was the hockey east goalie of the week again this past week.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: And he's coming in after being part of goalie tandems in other parts of his career.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: This feels like the first time, maybe, that he's gonna be getting that massive number one workload.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: So we'll keep an eye on him in this series.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: And then Lowell also with an incredible power play so far this season.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: They are above and beyond everyone else in hockey east right now, 39.3% on the power play.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: They didn't have any power play goals last weekend.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: So before that, they were even, I think they were right around 45% on the power play.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, now they're, you know, they're only 40%.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: That's crazy how good that still is.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: And then to look over to UConn, it uh they got their biggest win of the season probably this past week, a 5-4 win over number two Boston College.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: The Huskies took a lead early in the second period and played with the lead the rest of the way.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: They ended up snapping a six-game win streak that the Eagles were on, and it was their first loss in hockey east play for Boston College.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: So that was a big win uh for UConn up at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: And in terms of UConn special teams, UConn has a power play goal in three of their last four games, as well as a short-handed goal in that stretch.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: And before that, they had gone seven games without a power play goal.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: And when we come back, we will take our short shifts presented by the shift group.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: You're watching this week in Hockey East.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to this week in Hockey East.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: It's time to take some short shifts presented by the shift group, helping former athletes and veterans become elite business professionals.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Just a couple of things I wanted to note.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Number one, game we didn't talk about, Boston College taking on Northeastern in a home and home.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Remember, Northeastern went to BC and won advanced number one in the country last year.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: And it kind of was the first game that gave you a sign of what they eventually did in the second half of the season.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: So it'll be interesting to see this weekend can be a springboard for them once again.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: On the other side, just wanted to mention, we've talked a little bit about the non-conference records on the men's side and how that matters for the pairwise.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Well, if you look at where things right now are, Hockey East is still in a really good spot.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: They're second record-wise.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: So you're head-to-head against the other conferences behind the Big Ten, ahead of the NCHC, and ahead of the ECAC.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: I just wanted to note this because the ECAC is off to a really good start as well.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: There are four leagues right now that have a 570 win percentage in out of conference games.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: You usually get three at that point.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: You don't usually get four.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: So that might be interesting and how it affects the pairwise.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: That's something to watch as we get some more non-conference games here over the next couple of weeks.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: And I wanted to take a short shift about the Northeastern women's hockey team trending up in the standings right now.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: They have been uh doing really well.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: And a lot of this on the back of freshman goaltender Lisa Jansen.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: She has been playing so well.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: She's gotten four starts in a row coming into Friday, and three of those are shutouts.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: So once again, she ends up being the Hockey East goalie of the week.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: And she's kind of taking over the net.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: It was Paige Chaborski early, and now it's been uh Lisa Jansen, the freshman from Sweden, taking over.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And there are three different players on this Northeastern team that earned weekly awards.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Tuva Candel, another Swede, is the Hockey East rookie of the week.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: Last year she was the Hockey East defender of the week.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Want to give her a shout out for playing so well so far in her young career.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Uh and uh Jules Constantinople, the defender of the week.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: She had two assists in the series against Maine for Northeastern.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: So uh as of right now, BU, I'm I'm sorry, Northeastern, they're gonna have quite a bit of time off.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: They don't play again till after the holiday, but important to recognize where they are heading into this break.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Finally, we won't get to talk about it before our show next week, but the Friendship 4 kicks off in Belfast next Friday.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Uh always such a special tournament.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: BU is gonna play Merrimack and then Notre Dame and Harvard in the second game.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, so just something to look out for next week.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: We'll talk a little bit more about that on our show, but game one will already be concluded.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for joining us this week.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Coming up next is UNH and Maine.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Should be a great rivalry matchup.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Thanks for joining us on another edition of This Week in Hockey.
