- 0:00Welcome back to Storytime with Lucky Podcast. Today we're going to read Kipper's Monster.
- 0:08What? What? Any author wants for his books to become dog-eared and familiar.
- 0:16I've been lucky enough that my very young readers are particularly adept at
- 0:24giving their books dog-eared in no time at all.
- 0:29And all of my books, perhaps. It's those about Kipper that get the doggiest ears of all.
- 0:38Which I guess is kind of appropriate. Mick Inkpen.
- 0:44Kipper's monster, Mick Inkpen.
- 0:48Tiger had a brand new torch. It's the most powerful torch there is, he said to Kipper.
- 0:58He's shown it at the big owl. He's shown it at Hippo.
- 1:04He's shown it at Kipper's face. You should see when it's dark.
- 1:09It's really good when it's dark. He sat in Kipper's basket and pulled the blanket over his head.
- 1:16We can make it dark under here.
- 1:19Come on, we can make it dark under here, he said. Under the blanket was one
- 1:24of Kipper's storybooks.
- 1:27That's another thing, said Tiger. You can read under the bedclothes with a torch like this.
- 1:35Tipper began to read, deep in the middle of the dark wood, there lived a terrible,
- 1:45a horrible, horrendous,
- 1:49terrible, tremendous, that's it, shouts a tiger, jumping up.
- 1:56We'll camp in the woods tonight, it'll be really, really dark in the woods.
- 2:02Shall I bring my book?
- 2:05Said Giffa So they took the book and some biscuits And,
- 2:19they put up their tent in the middle of the woods At the bottom of the big hill,
- 2:27Just as it began to get dark Tyra began to think that,
- 2:35perhaps it wasn't such a good idea after all.
- 2:38Come inside and you can have a biscuit, said Kipper. Do you want Rabbit or Big Owl?
- 2:46But Tiger didn't reply. He was looking nervously out of the door.
- 2:51Do you think there are any bears in these woods? He whispered.
- 2:55No, I shouldn't think so, said Kipper. He began to read.
- 2:59Deep in the middle of the dark, dark woods, there lived a horrible...
- 3:06But Tiger wasn't ready. He asked Kipper to sit next to the door.
- 3:10Instead of him, when Kipper tried again to read, Tiger got...
- 3:16And up and zipped the door shut all together.
- 3:21But the third time Kipper tried to read from somewhere outside the tent,
- 3:29there came the most terrible, tremendous, horrible, horrendous screech.
- 3:37What was that, said Kipper. Tiger said nothing. Let's go and look.
- 3:43He whispered, whispered Kipper.
- 3:47So they crept out of the tent and into the woods, shining Tiger's torch ahead of them.
- 3:56I think it came somewhere near here, said Kipper.
- 4:00The torch being lit up, the enormous grey trunk of an old tree.
- 4:11There in the middle of a dark, dark hole.
- 4:16Suddenly a huge pair of yellow eyes blinked open, and from the hole came the most terrible screech.
- 4:26They shrieked around bumping into each other and sending the torch flying They
- 4:34scrambled into the tent and lay there panting hard listening,
- 4:40I think it was just an owl Whispered,
- 4:44whispered Pippa Yes,
- 4:47it was just a silly old owl But behind him the shadow of something The shadow of something.
- 4:57Was growing on the wall of the tent Something with horns It's a horrible,
- 5:05horrendous monster squealed Tiger,
- 5:10The shape on the tent grew until it was looming above them.
- 5:16Then slowly it changed into a shape that Kipper had seen before.
- 5:22Kipper crept out of the tent and walked towards the torchlight.
- 5:26Caught in the beam was a little snail.
- 5:31Kipper picked up the torch and let the snail crawl onto his paw.
- 5:38He looked at the snail grossly,
- 5:42Its horns curled out In and out as he touched them,
- 5:51I found the horrible horrendous monster Look tiger Tiger peeked out from underneath
- 5:57the blanket And he saw the snail He saw a shadow It felt silly Shall I read the story now?
- 6:05Said Kipper But Kipper never did get to read his story because they went home to Tiger's house,
- 6:16Where they put the tent in Tiger's bedroom And Tiger got to read it instead,
- 6:22The end and thank you for listening Did I hear that?
