- 0:33Hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing.
- 0:35Quicker, quicker. Quicker Hello and welcome to
- 0:41Hamster with a Blunt Pen Knife, a commentary podcast for Doctor
- 0:44Who. My name is Craig Williams, I'm
- 0:46with Joe Ford, and we're going to look at the Mind of Evil Part
- 0:483 today. Is that right?
- 0:50That was absolutely effortless. It's like you've been doing this
- 0:53for years. Yeah, well, I'm a teacher.
- 0:55I'm used to kind of like standing in front of my people
- 0:57and. Talking shit.
- 1:00Then you're perfect on this podcast.
- 1:03That's what we do. Do you know what?
- 1:06Can I tell you a story about prison?
- 1:08When I was at 11 years, it doesn't.
- 1:10Involve the showers and some soap.
- 1:12Does it? I wish it did actually.
- 1:14I got some DVD's on my shelf anyway.
- 1:18No. When I was 11 years old, my dad
- 1:20went to prison. He was put away for attempting
- 1:24to smuggle 3/4 of £1,000,000 worth of heroin from Gatwick
- 1:28Airport. It was part of it, part of a
- 1:31chain. And I have to say I did visit
- 1:35Lewis and Brixton prison quite a bit, you know.
- 1:37I had to go and see him at prison and they've captured it
- 1:41perfectly in this story. Really fucking grim.
- 1:46I can smell the piss when I watch this.
- 1:50I bet it, yeah, they they they did.
- 1:52Did they look into kind of using a real prison?
- 1:54I think they did, yeah. And the fact, Barry, I said that
- 1:56nobody would. Yeah.
- 1:59But that that if they did that, it probably would have been on
- 2:01film and it would have looked amazing if the Yeah, I still
- 2:05think in fact. Yeah, it does.
- 2:07It does. But you know, film, just film
- 2:09just gives a bit more precede prestige, doesn't it?
- 2:11Well, and we're gonna see some film in this episode, which is
- 2:16incredible. Yes, Yes.
- 2:18Is this the episode where they still the missile is?
- 2:20Isn't it? No, is it not?
- 2:22Is that thought? Yeah, yeah, this.
- 2:24But we get we get the doctor running around the the prison
- 2:26car park in this one. So there's there's Cowboys and
- 2:31engines, isn't it? It's basically like colony and
- 2:33space, but done really stylishly.
- 2:36And and and Milla jumping onto the Bessie with the immoral
- 2:39line. Now let's get this heap inside.
- 2:42Oh, I love that. So hot.
- 2:43Can you do that again? Now let's get this heap inside.
- 2:49It's getting a bit sexy. We better start watching this
- 2:51thing. OK.
- 2:53All right, so hang on, You in trouble?
- 2:55So I've got count it in. Yeah.
- 2:58Are you ready? Yeah.
- 3:00No, you're doing a me. I've got the episode.
- 3:03I'm always doing that. Well, no.
- 3:06It nearly played Episode 2 again.
- 3:09So yeah, off you go. I did that the other day.
- 3:12I did. I was thinking the wrong.
- 3:13I said no, I did. I did the whole commentary and I
- 3:15just let them sort of leave me through it.
- 3:17I didn't. Tell them I'm just taking cues
- 3:20from them going, Oh yeah, that. Bit's really great, you know,
- 3:24but I think I've got the right one here in 54321.
- 3:30Let's go. And we're off.
- 3:33Diddly. Dumb diddly.
- 3:34Even Bernard Lodge is a is a underrated person in Doctor Who.
- 3:41Law, I feel because he did the first four title sequences,
- 3:44isn't he? Yes.
- 3:46If we always talk about directors and producers and
- 3:48writers, but never talk about. Because at the end of the day,
- 3:50this is what kind of sticks stuck in children's minds, the
- 3:53music and the title sequences. Real cliche about hiding behind
- 3:57the sofa when you hear the music.
- 3:58Yeah, yeah, cliche is there for a reason.
- 4:01Because you know, how did we end?
- 4:04I can't remember. The the American got.
- 4:10Got scared by the pink dragon with Lockjaw Puff The magic
- 4:14dragon puff. The magic dragon lives by the
- 4:18sea. I don't know.
- 4:21The words well done, well done. You know, you should know
- 4:27you're. Pretty Can't Sing that anymore
- 4:30now because it's called Puff. Have you ever been invited back
- 4:33to a shadowy hotel room by a attractive Chinese girl?
- 4:39No. Never.
- 4:40Never, Yeah. Really haven't.
- 4:42And not only was he kind of taken back to a hotel room by a
- 4:46rather attractive Chinese girl, quite a Dolly, it turned into a
- 4:49it turned into a puff. Say he's got the best of both
- 4:56worlds. Enormous pink, phallic and
- 4:58smoking. Where's the?
- 5:00Yeah, it's advancing on him. The puff is advancing on him.
- 5:04Why pink? Why did I paint him?
- 5:06Which, which was another revelation when it got restored
- 5:08to color. Oh, puffs pink.
- 5:12And this is when it turns around and you see the full thing.
- 5:16Don't shoot the dragon, Brigadier.
- 5:17That's what it's wearing. Yeah.
- 5:19Oh, do you see the Charlie's a bus like?
- 5:22Anyone else? Anyone else would have walked at
- 5:26the hotel room go what kinky stuff's going on in here?
- 5:30Right. That's what I would think.
- 5:32She fell to the floor very gracefully.
- 5:34I know, you know, I'm too pretty.
- 5:42Actually. That's not a bad say, is it?
- 5:44Quite. Like that.
- 5:45But they then that kind of like background, kind of like divider
- 5:48reminds me of like the one things we had in our garden when
- 5:50I was the the walls we had. You really were living in a posh
- 5:56part of town. I didn't live in Ford.
- 6:00No, no, I hear it's rough as houses.
- 6:03I live. I lived in Barnes.
- 6:05Still do. I was cruelly, for God's sakes,
- 6:09and I creepy cruelly. Well, unless I'm very much
- 6:14mistaken, it put the killer machine in Stanmore prison.
- 6:18The Killer machine, if you have a saw on it.
- 6:21Oh, we can only. It's a P It's a pity he calls
- 6:24himself color because. Normally he gets it.
- 6:26It's either an anagram or it's the word master in a different
- 6:28language. So yeah, you should have been if
- 6:30you oh, but then we if he's kind of like El maestro or something
- 6:35in French or Spanish at least we we spared the Roger Delgado
- 6:38doing a doing an accent that he forgets to do halfway through
- 6:40the story like you did in the Time Monster.
- 6:43I I love the dogs. It's like, you know and state of
- 6:45the man, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:47Didn't didn't you learn Spanish in your?
- 6:49That school of yours? Joe El Maestro is Spanish for
- 6:52master. Oh gosh, you thick bitch.
- 7:00Like somebody who's trying to drive this world into war.
- 7:05He can make a dramatic exclamation better.
- 7:08But it's it's the earnestness of Pertley which I love.
- 7:12The the bit at the end of Colony in Space where that half
- 7:16inflated balloon monster comes out of a draw when Pertley looks
- 7:20at it and calls it Sir. And it's it's done with the one
- 7:24you know. Thank you, Sir.
- 7:25You know what? It almost makes it work.
- 7:28It's got it's got the little little legs in the in his little
- 7:31dress on but because. But because he believes it.
- 7:37We believe it. Yeah, that is the magic of this
- 7:40stuff. I mean, well, I believed he was
- 7:43talking Cantonese here, pick something and said it, but he
- 7:46wasn't. But is Alomar?
- 7:48And then he And then he goes, and then he goes just so we know
- 7:54what he's saying at home. But.
- 7:56You know what, right. I've actually said that
- 7:58somebody. Before Alamar Alamar.
- 8:03Oh, it's so embarrassing. The thing is, Doctor Who's made
- 8:06me do. The thing is right if he's
- 8:07waking Joe out of a of a hypnotic city.
- 8:09But wake up, Joe, you know. Yeah.
- 8:14Get, get up. Yes.
- 8:15Yeah. Oh, here's my love.
- 8:17Yep. Should it?
- 8:19Yeah, Harry should have been Reagan Miller.
- 8:22Doesn't he go in the cell, right.
- 8:23And then he just he just blows a kiss to Joey, sort of goes.
- 8:27Yeah, that that's kind of like the only kind of like all of
- 8:32that could have happened, yeah. Someone, someone clearly said oh
- 8:37you know, if this was really, if this was gritty realism, Joe,
- 8:40Joe would be getting kind of raped from all the prisoners.
- 8:43Let's address that by Mailer going.
- 8:45You know, he literally just caned him on the back of the
- 8:48head then. After Summers.
- 8:50No wonder he looked 50 when he was 30.
- 8:52I think. You know what?
- 8:53And people that hold guns, yeah. It's all about the intent of how
- 8:58they do it, as to whether I believe it or not.
- 9:01I believe that Mailer could would shoot in a heartbeat the
- 9:05way he holds the gun. I do.
- 9:07I do like. I do like pretty much want a
- 9:08hindle. At the end of episode one of
- 9:11Kinder, when he's got that gun in his hand, I'm like, yeah,
- 9:13you're never going to shoot anyone, mate.
- 9:16I have the power of life and death over all of you.
- 9:21I love that. I never knew if that was
- 9:23brilliant or awful. It was one of them things where
- 9:25you I finally found a match. In the quotes, you know, it's
- 9:29amazing. I love Kinder.
- 9:32You're doing it the minute It's on the minute, isn't it?
- 9:35Yeah, yeah. Yeah, oh, here we go.
- 9:37I love, I love, Benton says. Don't tell me your problems get
- 9:40that moved and I really want one of them going.
- 9:42The problem is that it's not real.
- 9:45It's a photographic blower. And that became more apparent
- 9:51when it was when it became color as well.
- 9:52In the black you could sort of tell in black and white, but in
- 9:55the color it makes it even more obvious, you know, I do.
- 10:00The brigade, the Brigadier, is knackered from laying on a Jeep.
- 10:03Sweet. In a very strange way.
- 10:06I do like the trio of the Brigadier, Benton and yeas.
- 10:10I like the fact that there's continuity for out the.
- 10:12Idea of it rather than the realization of it.
- 10:14I just think it feels very dazzling on me.
- 10:17It does. It does.
- 10:17Brings on and you didn't in Series 7 because you didn't have
- 10:20that. Yeah, but people say, Oh yeah,
- 10:24every, every, apart from Kate Stewart.
- 10:25Now every time unit comes back at someone different, but that's
- 10:27probably what it would be like a bloody Stewart.
- 10:32Yeah, I know. Cannot go through one scene
- 10:35without saying my father, Brigadier Leopard Stewart,
- 10:39defend this planet. It's because there's so little
- 10:42about her, you know, she's got. Yeah, yeah, she lived.
- 10:44She lived on a barge in downtime or something, didn't she?
- 10:47Oh yeah, that was the old Beverly Chrisman.
- 10:49Kate Stewart wasn't. It yeah, yeah.
- 10:51Yeah. Do you know what though the best
- 10:53line in power of the Doctor was when the Master went Your dad
- 10:56was an idiot. Yeah, it was kind of like it was
- 10:58kind of retort to all the times. He kind of said my dad was
- 11:01Alistair Gordon. That was Stewart.
- 11:02I'm his daughter. Yeah, 5 rounds wrap it.
- 11:05I even do the same catchphrases as him.
- 11:08Fucking up front and shoot down. I'm sorry, but there's no way
- 11:11that I believe that she's the daughter of Brigadier until she
- 11:13says come now, Doctor, or or refers to the TARDIS as his
- 11:20infernal contraption. When she does that, I believe
- 11:23it's his daughter. Or opens the door and goes, you
- 11:25know, I think that's Cromer out there.
- 11:27Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think this is the last time we
- 11:30see Captain Chinle, which is a shame.
- 11:33She just, she just kind of delivers a lot of exposition.
- 11:34And then Dickie's off and you know what I'm going to say it?
- 11:38She's not memorable because she's a woman and she's not
- 11:41memorable because she's Chinese. She's memorable because she's
- 11:43really good actress. Yeah, she is.
- 11:45She is, and it's a good character.
- 11:48So yeah, it's a bit remiss for us.
- 11:49It's a bit nice she gets this like sort of redemption in the
- 11:51fact that, like, she tells them all the evil plans before she
- 11:55disappears. Oh, here we go.
- 11:56Is the is the realization. What's his line?
- 12:01Is a returned? Who else would drive this plan
- 12:03as the brink of war? The Master, otherwise known as
- 12:06Emil Keller. He's Lucky's here.
- 12:12Yeah, but that. But it would have been funnier
- 12:15if, like he had adopted like a name like like in the last story
- 12:18when he was Colonel Masters. So it was it was a it would have
- 12:21been funny if he went. Who?
- 12:22Who else would drive this plan to war the Master, otherwise
- 12:25known as Colonel Masters? But it but it but it it begs the
- 12:30question though like if we look at this in terms of like you
- 12:32know the timeline how long the masters been masquerading as
- 12:36Emil Keller for about two years. I think it's it's already months
- 12:38or something it says it at one point.
- 12:40So then do we do we think that that amount of time has passed
- 12:44since Terror of the Autumns or was he doing was he being
- 12:48Colonel Masters and Emil Keller at the same time.
- 12:51I think that I think we as fans we we we we can kind of it we
- 12:55can. We can kind of take a long
- 12:57season between seasons. Like, there's a lot of time has
- 13:00passed, but we can't do it like between stories in the same
- 13:03season, if you know what I mean, Yeah.
- 13:05But, but I think, I think it has been 18 months since Terry the
- 13:07Autumns because the doctrine draw relationships, all
- 13:09grounded. I know the idea he's doing it
- 13:12all at the same time. He's got 15 plans on the go.
- 13:14I think, yeah. But The thing is if you think
- 13:16that then it kind of diminishes how like?
- 13:19Successful Masters. But he's a bit shit, isn't he?
- 13:21Yes, to think of backup plans because he thinks this one's not
- 13:23going to work. May I remind you of his line in
- 13:26Castro Valva. I had a plan behind that trap.
- 13:29Yeah, would have been enjoyed to.
- 13:31Well, that. Well then you know you're but
- 13:33then you know you're a bit shit then if you're not expecting
- 13:35your plans to work. I did.
- 13:37I never know. It's Matthew.
- 13:38What's Stiffy in that saying? I'm baffled.
- 13:42I mean, that's just prime for me to know it's not 100 times.
- 13:46Well, to be fair, Anthony have to get on an hydraulic lift to
- 13:48look at it. So that's true.
- 13:50I love that bit where he gets on the lift, he goes and they don't
- 13:55put any dialogue or or like dub or anything.
- 13:57It just, it's just, it's just and nearly going lift one and
- 14:00he's looking about what I was going.
- 14:05My my favorite only moment is in trial of a Time Lord 14 where
- 14:10he's got a genuine treasure chest in his TARDIS filled with
- 14:14like, you know, gold cups and rubies and things.
- 14:16And he offers it to Saba Long get it if you follow me orders.
- 14:20It's great. No way he does.
- 14:23He lifts a lot. And Amy, you know.
- 14:25He's kind of, oh, he's poor man's Delgado and he does it.
- 14:28But no, it's fun, that stuff. Yeah, I mean, I watched his new
- 14:31five doctors this week and every time he's on the script.
- 14:34Chart sort of flavy. Bet they've shocked.
- 14:39Where he goes, it's an open-ended trials Mark Beam and
- 14:42he goes, he's great. One of my previous assessors.
- 14:47Yeah, these thunderbolts are everywhere.
- 14:50I've been with fans. We've quoted that entire.
- 14:53I've seen in the, in the, in the, in the, in the, in the
- 14:57council room. I mean one thing I will say is
- 14:59we have just quoted load lines from the five dogs and I don't
- 15:02think the dialogue it's not functional here.
- 15:04It's good dialogue. I'm not talking about Thomas.
- 15:07Get that. Get that zombie out of here.
- 15:09Oh, look at Joe. Bloody hell.
- 15:11Yeah, you say like it's Oh yeah. She was really ditzy in her in
- 15:13her first season and then like, you know towards the end of the
- 15:16green death, she's like a fully functional scientist.
- 15:18There's a story arc. Well, no.
- 15:22Like a all at that table go down, you see a shoot the
- 15:25ceiling. I miss with me.
- 15:28Like that guy in the backs, Eric Mason.
- 15:30He was he was in Hot Fuzz is um is Billy White lows husband.
- 15:34He kind of goes out Simon Pegg with a sword.
- 15:37He was still working then, bless him.
- 15:39I like it when she says to the fat cool you.
- 15:41Know now the Master is listening to King Crimson on his radio
- 15:44here, which is for a Prague fan like me, that's that's very
- 15:47nice. But I don't know if that was
- 15:48intentional, because it King Crimson the devil you know.
- 15:51Didn't recognize it at all. It just sounded like evil music.
- 15:53Yeah, yeah, it's the piece. That piece of music called The
- 15:56Devil's Triangle, do you know? But choosing Dover Castle, that
- 15:59was so savvy, wouldn't it? It looks like a prison it.
- 16:02Does. And it's and it's unlike, you
- 16:05know talk like the Andros, Atari and Dover.
- 16:06Castle is in Dover. Can I tell you so funny?
- 16:09Mark and I went away recently, right down the end of the road.
- 16:12I was going, My God, we look, we've got a castle, right?
- 16:15Down the end of the road and we didn't go there for the first
- 16:18night and the second, I was like, wow, let's get a love
- 16:20look. And it was a prison.
- 16:22Shit, it's the mind of evil. Is that guy is that van?
- 16:26Got a man strapped under it. I only hope.
- 16:31The. The I love.
- 16:32It when the master comes in all smooth.
- 16:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. Plan to take over?
- 16:36Yeah. When this is all that, the
- 16:38unit's scientific advisors anyway.
- 16:39Oh, I don't think we need to worry him.
- 16:44He does touch of it as well. Do you remember in front here in
- 16:46space when he comes here? Yeah, yeah.
- 16:47And he reads the charges. You can't help but laugh can.
- 16:50Your smile is. I've got my, I've got my
- 16:52equipment right here. Well, listen, he's listening to
- 16:57Prague music in the 70s and in the in the in the noughties,
- 17:00he's listening to Sisters and and Voodoo Child.
- 17:05I mean, that's a character arc in itself.
- 17:07It's his campaigns, yeah. Or he's just been written by
- 17:11Rusty Davis at that point. Yeah, this is this is where he
- 17:14fires the bombs going. I love this scene and we think
- 17:19Mail is gonna like crack one on him and then he's.
- 17:22Like he just I've got the bombs here for you.
- 17:25Yeah, Roger Delgado's The Anti. Richard Franklin when it comes
- 17:28to showing force. And he's the only person that
- 17:31can make Mela seem weak. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 17:36I mean, by all accounts, Roger Delgado was a was a lovely man
- 17:40and he just didn't, he didn't have the he, but he had an evil
- 17:43face. You know what's very odd in
- 17:46retrospect is that, good grief who plays Mayla?
- 17:51William Marlow. Married to corporate Bell In
- 17:54real life, you know, no, but he does marry Roger Delgado's wife.
- 17:57Doesn't he? Yeah, Yeah, he does.
- 17:58That's. I mean, imagine Kismet watching
- 17:59this back. Are that in?
- 18:03Are that in? I've had that about that.
- 18:10Oh gosh, yeah. We have some great action here
- 18:15now. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:17We're so excited to come back from 4:00 to 6:00 with all that
- 18:20action in episode 4. I know the, the, the, the, the
- 18:24master said to to me, let let's create havoc.
- 18:29I don't know if that's an in joke or not.
- 18:30It should have been. Yeah.
- 18:32Yeah, I think it's a little secret.
- 18:35Get the chroma joke. Until about last week.
- 18:38Took me a long time as well. I know.
- 18:42Oh, really? Such I'm finished.
- 18:44I'm finishing here now. Open up.
- 18:46And then they've got bloody gas masks on.
- 18:49What do you think about this electronic music in eight?
- 18:52Well, like I said, I wish in my head those no sounds are
- 18:56actually the bombs. That's not, that's not
- 19:00incidental music. That's that's special.
- 19:01That's Dick Mills. But yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:04But as incidental music, though, it's crap.
- 19:06Yeah, he can turn it off with a click of the fingers and he can
- 19:09turn. With a bomb.
- 19:12Yeah, Roger Delgado, the only man who could control Dudley
- 19:15Simpson. Nah, Nah, to Cindy.
- 19:19He goes through, he goes through his different eras as he Dudley.
- 19:21He starts off quite orchestral. Then he goes and he gets to
- 19:25synthesize and and he does that and then he go.
- 19:31Then he goes orchestral again. Ohh, hang on.
- 19:33I'm trying to think of what's his second orchestral face.
- 19:35So you're talking about sort of 70s?
- 19:37Yeah, like where all where. It all sounds the same, but then
- 19:39he'll suddenly have a moment of inspiration.
- 19:41Like City of Death, yeah. Because he's I think his first
- 19:45one was planted giants, which is quite like jaunty.
- 19:47But then he then he comes to like underwater menace and he's
- 19:49kind of like he's just, he's opened his new Christmas
- 19:51presents like do, do, do, do, do, do.
- 19:56And then we get tired of this and he seeds of death.
- 19:58He's going crazy. Done.
- 20:00Done, Done, Done. I loved it, yeah.
- 20:04I love the Seats of death. Did it.
- 20:05Did it didn't. When the when the titles are on
- 20:08and I love all of this. And now Doctor, I'm ready for
- 20:11you. That's that's Doctor Who.
- 20:14No, the funniest bit is in a minute where he goes.
- 20:16Don't point that thing and be mad.
- 20:17It could go off. Why is that always so?
- 20:23Funny by being so serious, that is.
- 20:26Still, that makes it funnier. Yeah, you're right.
- 20:29It's the earnestness. It seem funny, yeah.
- 20:35Share conceit. Just watch him in the last
- 20:38episode calling his face where he's talking to the Guardian,
- 20:40the half inflated monster in a skirt.
- 20:44You just believe. You believe it all.
- 20:46When he's confronted with Alpha. Centauri and you know, he's sort
- 20:50of blouse, doesn't he? Look at this handheld camera
- 20:53work. Yeah.
- 20:54Now let's get this heap inside. Yes.
- 20:57Don't put that thing at me, man. I'm here on official business.
- 21:04I've come to sort out the trouble.
- 21:05That's right, mate. You're in it.
- 21:07Now let's get this heap inside. I should.
- 21:09That's my cut phrase. Knowing it, let's get this heap
- 21:11inside. You do it well though.
- 21:14Ohh man, they'll go, ohh, yeah, this, the swivel chair he's he's
- 21:17doing this on. I love.
- 21:18I was doing this on purpose to just to kind of Lord over him.
- 21:21And purpose goes, yes, I thought.
- 21:25Funny his finger haven't. Yeah, he he he swings around and
- 21:27the master of the. Governor.
- 21:30That's great. But And now.
- 21:32But then like he, he dismissed. They just chat like old mates.
- 21:35So how how's things going? You know I've taken over the
- 21:38prison that that's the beauty of it.
- 21:41It's not like I will stop you, master.
- 21:43No, it says, can I take it down? It's like, yeah, can I set it
- 21:46right? Going well.
- 21:47How's the riot? Yeah, Where's Miss?
- 21:53Grant reclining in one. Of our cells.
- 21:59Oh, I love that. I love it when he gets serious.
- 22:02Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:05In the Demons where he says to the fella, I've got nothing to
- 22:08lose now, so you better watch it.
- 22:12He means that we're about to get to a bit where Roger Delgado
- 22:17kind of slips on his arson on a puddle of water, which I'm sure,
- 22:21which I'm sure wasn't. Barry, let's actually talks
- 22:23about that on the commentary and he says, so I'm glad we left
- 22:26that in because it happened in real life, you know, yes.
- 22:30Life is not perfectly choreographed.
- 22:33Do you think, do you think we've got a bit of a revisionist look
- 22:36at Barry? Let's now he's got this kind of
- 22:38like affable old uncle type of character or bless him bless
- 22:42Barry but, but but when I was reading about Tim Coombe and the
- 22:45way he was tread, I'm just thinking well Barry you bastard.
- 22:49My other half says about Barry. Let's.
- 22:51That he loves Barry Letts, right.
- 22:53He says it because he he does talk good sense.
- 22:56And like, yeah, I think Tim, Tim Coon was treated badly, but he
- 23:00overspent ridiculously so in terms of like a job.
- 23:04He didn't do his job well. He went over budget but but, but
- 23:09it looks brilliant. It looks great, yeah.
- 23:12And there's a part of me thing again at the end.
- 23:14We're all human, you know? And Barry Letts was a director
- 23:18and this does look a lot better than you know.
- 23:20And you just think, was it really because the old spend or
- 23:24was it just a bit class? The other thing he does say,
- 23:29though, is that he thinks the direction of this is amazing.
- 23:31Yeah, we should have spend, always spend.
- 23:34Come on, he can be back next year.
- 23:37Well. He should have brought back
- 23:38Ferguson again. I think after.
- 23:40I think he. I think that was a choice of
- 23:42Michael Ferguson's. I don't think he did.
- 23:44I think he felt a done. He's like, who?
- 23:45And we don't know the stuff. Now we're in, Sweeney, look at
- 23:48this. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:50That's probably Royce Scamel on the on the battlements.
- 23:54I mean, I think boys love this sort of thing, don't they?
- 23:56I want to be very sexist now. Boys and girls love this sort of
- 24:00thing. No, actually, I've been
- 24:02listening to a podcast where her husband and wife watched Doctor
- 24:05Who and she was she just switches off during the action
- 24:08scene because this is the purple era and she loves the she loves
- 24:10the era. But she's yearning for the
- 24:13Master and Doctor to be revealed as brothers or something.
- 24:17I wants to name so planet fun what you do do that to your own
- 24:22first shack it's it's clearly going to be like own race or
- 24:28it's would you do that to one of your own everyone like that
- 24:30brother. Look at bagging on the walk so
- 24:34it doesn't, so it doesn't fall over.
- 24:35Don't make it warble. It's like Adric.
- 24:37It's like Adric with the the typewriter and Earth shock, I
- 24:40thought. I thought he's a.
- 24:42Cliffhanger I thought he'd make for the greenhouse.
- 24:44Doctor. Look at you with a gun.
- 24:47And now I believe he shoot him. It's a fantastic cliffhanger,
- 24:50but it's the same cliffhanger as episode one, and I think it's
- 24:53the same cliffhanger as episode four.
- 24:55Yeah, on five. I think it's the same
- 24:57cliffhanger nearly every time. There is something about the way
- 25:00we going, you know. Watch watch how how he's
- 25:04restraint. Like in a really sort of violent
- 25:06way, yeah. But he only he only restrains
- 25:10him, so he doesn't do the karate chop through the fire again.
- 25:13I don't know if we'd have a scene like this now.
- 25:16And Doctor Who? No.
- 25:17Someone pointing a rifle in his face.
- 25:18Well, the Doctor. The Doctor's being tortured,
- 25:19essentially. Whilst he's being handcuffed on
- 25:21and he's being and he's being reminded of the web planet, the
- 25:24poor bastard. Tortured for anyone?
- 25:27Do you remember again? Remember both on my dear doctor
- 25:34every day. Again, I'll say a wave of black
- 25:35and white where the dots are from.
- 25:36Quiet. Yeah, I I.
- 25:38So I noticed that as well. Yeah.
- 25:41And and as well, when it got like colorized, you could see
- 25:45the enemies a lot better. When when it was still in black
- 25:48and white, it was still a bit blurry.
- 25:49Like, what's that? Is that.
- 25:50Yeah. What is that cyber man, you
- 25:51know. Whereas now you can make it.
- 25:54Yeah. Yeah, right.
- 25:56I think. Right.
- 25:57It's not Kirkullian. Can you remember how the when
- 26:00the Doctor landed in the rescue said he's been with this planet
- 26:02before. So there there there was an
- 26:05there was an unseen adventure on on the planet.
- 26:06What's it called? Dildo or something?
- 26:08Yeah, that's right. And he said all We had an
- 26:11adventure here before. I'm more back here again.
- 26:12How lovely. Clearly the person we see is not
- 26:16cooling, but someone in the same sort of outfit from that
- 26:18adventure rather than the rescue that that that's winning.
- 26:22I can't. I can't explain the war machines
- 26:24in the zombie though. No, no.
- 26:27That's the last time we saw a dodo.
- 26:28That's why the war machines haunted.
- 26:30Yeah. Yes.
- 26:31Yeah. It should have just been her
- 26:34coming at him. I love how you can just see the
- 26:36little brain in in the glass jar there.
- 26:38It's. Ohh yeah yeah.
- 26:40I love it when you see that later and it sort of just sort
- 26:42of bubbles, it pulls in there, there.
- 26:43It's just like a it's just like a turd, isn't it?
- 26:47Yeah. Now here's a question.
- 26:48I think we need to kind of like ask the big guns, like big and
- 26:51on. And David Brunt, who does the
- 26:53Dalek voices in this in this story?
- 26:58I don't know. They're not.
- 26:59They're not. Quite.
- 27:00They're not quite right. Yeah.
- 27:01Yeah. He'll know.
- 27:04OK, well we'll tweet when this episode goes out.
- 27:06There's a zombie. There's.
- 27:08What? You know what that'll mean.
- 27:10They'll do a whole episode about this.
- 27:12Oh God, yeah, yeah. Documentation shows that in
- 27:151971. How great.
- 27:18I like. I always like how the masters
- 27:20credit before the companions. Well, of course, yeah.
- 27:24Yeah. Ben Benton.
- 27:26I shared a credit with Richard, Of course, you know.
- 27:29I'm gonna take a pun and say, I think this episode, this story
- 27:32started strong and it's getting better.
- 27:34Yeah, yeah. Or Christopher, come.
- 27:36There he is in lights. Are you sure it's not
- 27:39Christopher Cole? It's a cum on there.
- 27:43OK Christopher. Christopher Cole is Phipps and
- 27:46sees the Death and in the in the Mutants and he was Mavis's long
- 27:51term lover and Cory. We'll see, yeah.
- 27:55He played a character called Victor Pet.
- 27:56There was always like a Victor and Derek thing going on in this
- 27:58in the 80s with this. Kind of.
- 28:00That was Derek. Yeah, yeah, Tim.
- 28:02Cool. We did the last one.
- 28:04We're talking about adverts. Now we're talking about you get
- 28:07everything on this commentary, folks.
- 28:10Okay, Are you ready for another question?
- 28:12Fire them at me. Okay, here we go Fraser.
- 28:21Gregory asks. Never out of him.
- 28:25Snog Mart and I'll go to the accent Snog Marry scared to
- 28:28death with an unconvincing dragon.
- 28:31Benton Bell Brick I'd snog Bell after telling it.
- 28:38Aleana Jeep I'd marry. I'd marry the break because he's
- 28:42always at unit HQ. So I've asked myself all the
- 28:44time, and I'd let the plastic monster terrorize John Levine.
- 28:51You. Well, snuck that brick,
- 28:54obviously straight away, and I'll definitely get him on a
- 28:57Jeep. I'd marry Corporal Bell because
- 29:00she pulls the curtains across with such grace.
- 29:03Yes and yeah, Benton. I mean, are you are you saying
- 29:06that you'd marry Corporal Bell for curtains?
- 29:10Yes, I have been there yet. Oh, sorry, I didn't say that
- 29:14one. Only once on it gave me
- 29:17nightmares. Jack Coyer asks what would the
- 29:22greatest fears of the other masters and doctors be?
- 29:26What a greatest. Well, I think a bit like me.
- 29:31I think Tom Bakers will be an empty bar.
- 29:35William Hartnell to Quart River Song attending a gay gypsy bar
- 29:40mitzvah. Allegedly.
- 29:42I mean, Davidson is. Davidson is having an adventure
- 29:46with Patrick, Tegan and Nessa, so he's living.
- 29:48He's not. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:49The 5th Doctor. If we talked to the 5th Doctor
- 29:51rather than the actor, it would be a personality.
- 29:55Trouten trouten. What would his worst fear be?
- 29:58What a lawyer who works in bigamy and then a positive
- 30:02pregnancy test. Baker, Colin.
- 30:09An empty fridge. I don't know.
- 30:12It's. Rich, you are vicious McCoy
- 30:16acting lessons. Indeed, it's funny if you do the
- 30:21actors on the characters, what would the Trout and Doctors
- 30:26worst fear be? I don't know location work.
- 30:31I don't know. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:33He never does location work. Okay, I don't.
- 30:38I don't do all that running around in the afternoon.
- 30:39What about the masters, the the master and deadly assassin?
- 30:47Pizza oven? Ian Lee's serious story where he
- 30:53can't camp it up, Missy, I don't know.
- 31:02No, I can't think of I'll be Missy either man.
- 31:04But the the John the John Sims fear is is again.
- 31:06It's the doctor. Actually, I know what I know
- 31:08what Mrs. Worse fear would be the thought of turning good.
- 31:12Because she she really struggles with that, doesn't she?
- 31:14At the end, the thought of that I don't know.
- 31:20We don't mention Sasha. The one because I get too hot
- 31:24bothers. So do you think?
- 31:27Do you think he comes after Missy or before?
- 31:30After, yeah, a lot of people, a lot of people think, well,
- 31:33Missy. Missy turned good and now now
- 31:35he's evil again. Time loads change personalities.
- 31:38With every generation it is possible that he could be evil
- 31:40again. He's on the behind the sofa for
- 31:43this and he's watching Roger Delcardo and he's so impressed
- 31:47and he's kind of Oh yeah, yeah, because I really sort of brought
- 31:50so much energy. He goes, I Why?
- 31:52Why couldn't I have scripts like that?
- 31:56Well, you know, he goes, I just wish I could.
- 31:58I could be a bit more still. And then he did rough you in
- 32:00after this, you know, power of the Doctor and you see him doing
- 32:03that sort of still intensity and you're like before he break,
- 32:06before he breaks. And it was disco act.
- 32:10Love. That bit with a dog.
- 32:11And a sideman looking at each other.
- 32:13Fabulous, right? I'm going to say some questions,
- 32:15but I'm going to ask one more without this episode and that is
- 32:20coming from. David GP, who's a recent hamster
- 32:27contributor. Yeah, follow.
- 32:29Does the color recovery work for you?
- 32:32It's ingenious work, but I find it can Take Me Out of the story.
- 32:35It's just a bit too distracting at times, yes, because we're
- 32:38Doctor Who fans. If I cannot understand how
- 32:44people, you know they're not. We, as they're called, can't
- 32:48tell the difference between film and Vt.
- 32:51Whereas I think to anybody else, they'd watch the mind of even
- 32:54think nothing of the color, they just think it's color TV.
- 32:56But we'd be what we know, you know, we can't handle that.
- 32:59Toby says it. I know that say this thing about
- 33:02saying to their mothers, Yeah, that's film, that's video.
- 33:05That's film going to have a T but it is interesting.
- 33:09This is actually BT, but it's on location.
- 33:11Well, they would normally use film, you know.
- 33:14All right. Love.
- 33:15Yeah, the the theater and talons that was that was the location,
- 33:19you know, but it was still on Vt So it makes you think that it's
- 33:22the studio. She's probably right.
- 33:25This is not showing it up in a warehouse, you know?
- 33:28Yeah, that's, yeah, I know that. That was my my excuse.
- 33:31Would you do me a favor, please? But while we're out Episode 3,
- 33:34because we've been learning a bit about, you know, the
- 33:36north-south divide. So would you just educate me,
- 33:39please, on just one phrase that perhaps I would not have heard?
- 33:45How do I bollocks? Slow that down.
- 33:49How do I bollocks? How do I How do I bollocks?
- 33:54It just don't be daft. How do I bollocks?
- 33:56OK, I'm going to try using that one.
- 34:00How do I bollocks? It?
- 34:02Doesn't sound right, doesn't it? Or it.
- 34:05Or sometimes like saying like just normal words but in a
- 34:08different way, you know? It's it's I'm just jealous
- 34:12you've you guys. I'm I'm gaming.
- 34:14I'm gaming. I'm gaming to bed or whatever.
- 34:16I whatever. I Whatever.
- 34:18I what I Whatever. No.
- 34:20One thing I hear all the time is use, yeah.
- 34:24You use. Yeah, yeah, use, yeah.
- 34:27Well, we say a lot. I'm talking, I'm talking, I'm
- 34:29talking, yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm drinking my cup of tea and I'm
- 34:33drinking my Coke or whatever. You know, it's it's strange and
- 34:37it just it just bleeds out like osmosis and kind of takes over
- 34:39the whole Northeast. You now, we take the piss.
- 34:41We're just jealous because it's a nicer accent than what we've
- 34:43got. It's more distinctive.
- 34:45It's got a bit more personality to it.
- 34:47I suppose so. But you, you know, you might
- 34:49think different. I mean, I I don't really think
- 34:51anything of it, but I'm on the upside.
- 34:53I'm on the inside looking out though Can.
- 34:55You hear this? Yeah yeah, I'm stuck with this.
- 35:00Well, look. Thank you for the first three
- 35:03episodes of The Mind of Evil that was.
- 35:04It's been it's been a pleasure, joy.
- 35:07Will reconvene very shortly for although no one else will know
- 35:10that because I'll put them all out in one week.
- 35:13Yeah, thank you. The the magic of podcasting.
- 35:17No, Seamless. Seamless.
- 35:20It's like going from film to Vt You wouldn't know that, but they
- 35:24filmed these. They recorded these on different
- 35:25nights. A.
- 35:28Bit of behind the scenes there yeah.
- 35:31I I think I've managed to to say all my notes.
- 35:34If you if you read if you read these back it it's so random
- 35:37swivel chair water accidental. Who voices Daleks?
- 35:40Kaquillian. No.
- 35:45Kiddly. All right.
- 35:46They could be all all the all the.
- 35:47There was something I didn't say.
- 35:48It's when. When when pert we kind of like
- 35:52when he comes back to the prison he complaints about the security
- 35:54passes television. It's a prison, you know.
- 36:01Yeah, I think, yeah. Barnum, a possible paedophile.
- 36:05Oh, good grief. Yeah, well, you did get that one
- 36:08in. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:11Don't. Don't get, don't give him your
- 36:13dairy box, Joe. He's a nonce.
- 36:16Okay, I'll cut it there.
