- 0:26Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:29So today I want to talk to you about cameras.
- 0:32You probably saying why are we talking about cameras on this?
- 0:34Well, any of you who know me and have followed me for any period
- 0:38of time know that I'm a little obsessive with taking pictures,
- 0:41whether it's my iPhone or my Canon.
- 0:44I really am into my cameras and taking pictures with them
- 0:47because it's part of a mindfulness practice for me
- 0:50where I use them to notice small things and I look for great
- 0:54shots and seeing things, whether it's in my chickens, flowers,
- 0:58the plants we grow out here on the farm, whatever it is that
- 1:00we're doing, there's always part of me that's very focused on
- 1:04that. But today I, I want to talk to
- 1:07you about what you can learn from focusing on the attributes
- 1:12that a camera can bring to you. And I know that sounds really
- 1:15strange, but when you start to think about it, cameras teach
- 1:18you so much. And in the process of, of, of
- 1:22being, you know, aware of the camera aspects, the camera
- 1:26actually gives you this ability to focus on what's important,
- 1:32right? So think about this, you have
- 1:34your camera, you don't focus on what's unimportant.
- 1:37You focus on what's important. You focus on what's in, in your
- 1:40line of sight, what you want to hone in on.
- 1:44And isn't that what we do when we're talking about our life and
- 1:47our goals? We want to focus in on something
- 1:49that's important to us. So you have to choose carefully
- 1:54what you focus on and what your intent of the subject is.
- 1:58And most of the time we are trying to capture good stuff.
- 2:03We're trying to take pictures of great things.
- 2:05We're trying to get just that right shot.
- 2:07Most of us, unless we're news photographers and not looking
- 2:10for the bad things, we're trying to capture great pictures of our
- 2:14family. We're trying to capture great
- 2:16pictures of what's going on around us, memories, you know,
- 2:19and this is so important in our lives.
- 2:22Like if we're focused on this, think about that.
- 2:25You want to focus on the good stuff.
- 2:27You want to say to yourself, wow, I want to be like the
- 2:29camera today. I'm going to focus on the good
- 2:31stuff. Inevitably you're going to take
- 2:34a crappy shot. There's no question about it.
- 2:37I take lots and lots and lots because having a digital camera,
- 2:41you can take a ton and you don't have to worry about it.
- 2:45You don't have to take those pictures and take film and have
- 2:48it developed like you did in old school days and you can just
- 2:52trash those pictures and start all over again.
- 2:54The beauty of digital art, it's just, you know, there's
- 2:57something to be said for old school art and there's something
- 3:00to be said for digital art because it is fun to be able to
- 3:03just take hundreds of pictures. And I do that with my chickens.
- 3:06I mean, people look at pictures and they'll say, wow, that's an
- 3:08amazing shot. Well, you're seeing one of many
- 3:11hundreds that I took in order to get that one shot in that right
- 3:14position with the right lighting across their eye or their face.
- 3:18So, you know, you've got to be willing to sit there and say to
- 3:21yourself, Yep, I, I'm very aware of the fact that I'm going to
- 3:25have shots that just don't work. I'm going to have things that
- 3:29are just bad shots, and that's OK because I'm still going to
- 3:34continue to take another shot. And wow, what an important
- 3:38lesson in life, right? Take another shot.
- 3:40Don't try to complicate things. Just take another shot.
- 3:44And at some point you're going to get exactly what you're
- 3:48looking for out of them. And if it means that you have to
- 3:50move over a millimeter and take that shot, you do it.
- 3:54I mean, that's what I do constantly because that one
- 3:57little shift, that one little different perspective.
- 4:00I can tell you one of the things that I learned in when I was in
- 4:03art school that really like elevated my photography.
- 4:06Not that this is a photography lesson, but it was, hey, don't
- 4:09just stand up from your own perspective.
- 4:11Whatever height you are, squat down, get low on the ground,
- 4:15stand on top of something else, take a different angle.
- 4:17And isn't that true in life about perspective in general?
- 4:21Don't just take it from one point of view.
- 4:23Look around, try to find multiple perspectives that you
- 4:26can see something from, because that's the power in changing
- 4:30your view about whatever's happening in your life.
- 4:32And it's the lesson in the camera to get a good shot.
- 4:36Change your perspective because God knows the moment you do
- 4:39that, you get an amazing, amazing outcome from it.
- 4:44And you know, here here's the thing, no matter how many bad
- 4:49shots you take, no matter what is out there, when you're
- 4:53dealing with the, you know, art and you're and you're creating
- 4:57with a camera, the fun thing is that sometimes those mistake
- 5:02shots actually turn out to be really silly, especially when
- 5:05you look at them in a series. So the lesson is when you're in
- 5:09life, when you're looking at all of this and you're saying, wow,
- 5:12that that seemingly was a bad shot, but that led to this and
- 5:15that led to this and that led to this.
- 5:17And you can see how it leads up to the good shot.
- 5:20So those bad shots in a line up when you have the perspective to
- 5:24look at it in a line changes everything.
- 5:28And that's what you need to do for yourself.
- 5:30So today's lesson, be like the camera.
- 5:33And I will add this in. If you do not have a mindfulness
- 5:37practice that includes taking pictures with your phone, add
- 5:40this one in because I promise you it will absolutely thrill
- 5:44you to walk around and say, what are the cool things that I can
- 5:47take pictures of today that no one else notices?
- 5:50I spend all my time on the phone during the day walking around
- 5:54talking to clients and I'll tell you, I'm probably on average
- 5:57take about 20-5 shots a day of different things that I notice
- 6:02as I'm walking around. It could be something as simple
- 6:04as my shoes. It could be something as
- 6:06fabulous as a blooming flower, it could be anything that I see.
- 6:11But the great part is I'm always looking and honing in on
- 6:14something creative and it really does make your brain become more
- 6:19attuned to that creative process.
- 6:20So I'm going to throw down that challenge.
- 6:23I hope you guys have an amazing day and remember, be like a
- 6:26camera and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 6:28Have a great day. Bye.
