- 1:03Speaker 1: February twenty second. Okay, let's continue more with sound from
- 1:07Speaker 1: Steve Starkeys and the rest of this before we wrap
- 1:10Speaker 1: up today's show. He was asked by Kirk Bolz, is
- 1:14Speaker 1: Texas equipped to win four straight games in a national championship.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I think, you know, the one thing about our team
- 1:26Speaker 2: is we're really versatile. I think we can do a
- 1:28Speaker 2: lot of things well and we can lean into different
- 1:31Speaker 2: aspects of our team for what's needed to win whatever
- 1:36Speaker 2: style of game that we're presented with. And so I
- 1:40Speaker 2: think that's a huge factor and our ability to be successful.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I think our depth is another, you know, huge factor
- 1:47Speaker 2: in us being successful. We can withstand injuries and when
- 1:52Speaker 2: guys get knocked out games or for an extended period
- 1:55Speaker 2: of time, and we can continue to perform at a
- 1:57Speaker 2: high level. And we've been in this arena before. You know,
- 2:01Speaker 2: there's this is a twelve team playoff this year. There
- 2:04Speaker 2: were four. It was a four team playoff last year,
- 2:06Speaker 2: and we're the only one that's in it again this year.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So I think that says a lot about our staff
- 2:11Speaker 2: that we're able to get back into this this space
- 2:13Speaker 2: again when when the other schools weren't able to do so.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And so I think us being comfortable in the arena
- 2:19Speaker 2: understanding the task at hand, I feel comfortable with that
- 2:23Speaker 2: that you know, again it's going to take a great effort.
- 2:25Speaker 2: We're you have to play really well and all that,
- 2:27Speaker 2: But I feel comfortable that that we've put ourselves in
- 2:29Speaker 2: position to do that. I don't I don't favored or not.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I mean, this is going to be a war Saturday,
- 2:35Speaker 2: That's how I look at it.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah, three of the other four teams in the playoff
- 2:38Speaker 1: last season didn't even really well. Two of them then
- 2:40Speaker 1: even stepped the playoff. Washington, of course, new head coach
- 2:44Speaker 1: with the bar going from dub to Alabama. They went
- 2:47Speaker 1: six and six this season under coach Fish Michigan. We
- 2:50Speaker 1: know about their struggles with Sharon more than Alabama had
- 2:53Speaker 1: an outside chance and then they lost to Oklahoma, a
- 2:56Speaker 1: five win Oklahoma team. Have you had any discussions with
- 2:58Speaker 1: any Alabama fans about them being upset they missed out
- 3:02Speaker 1: in the College football playoffs? Just show them highlights of
- 3:05Speaker 1: that game and show them Jackson Arnold, who I don't know,
- 3:07Speaker 1: even through a football pass in that game, just rend
- 3:11Speaker 1: the ball right down Alabama's throat. But Texas back to
- 3:14Speaker 1: back seasons the College Football Playoff and back to back
- 3:17Speaker 1: seasons playing for a conference championship one to two. Whether
- 3:21Speaker 1: you're a frustrated or not with the way Texas has played.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You gotta gotta give Sark and the staff and Quinn
- 3:26Speaker 1: youwrs credit for what they've been able to do. Speaking
- 3:29Speaker 1: to Quinn yours a very interesting exchange. I'm not gonna
- 3:32Speaker 1: play the whole exchange for you between the reporter and
- 3:35Speaker 1: on whar interestering with Obie Orange Bloods and Steve Sarkisan
- 3:38Speaker 1: was asked if this is Quinn Yours' last game, and
- 3:42Speaker 1: Start quickly interjected and said I will not do IFFs,
- 3:46Speaker 1: no hypotheticals, and on Arre like no, no, I mean
- 3:49Speaker 1: sark said, no, if you, if you, if you say,
- 3:52Speaker 1: what is Quinn Yours' impact ut during his time? I
- 3:55Speaker 1: will answer that, And so an war did ask him
- 3:58Speaker 1: what is Quinn Ewers' impact at Texas through his three
- 4:01Speaker 1: seasons in Austin.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Win's had a tremendous impact from where our program was
- 4:05Speaker 2: when he arrived, in the faith that he's had in
- 4:08Speaker 2: our program. We were a five and seven football team,
- 4:11Speaker 2: and the fact that he endured an eight and five
- 4:14Speaker 2: team to the next season going twelve and two, being
- 4:18Speaker 2: Big twelve champs, going to the College Football Playoff, to
- 4:21Speaker 2: our first season in the SEC, taking us to an
- 4:24Speaker 2: SEC championship game, and again with a fairly high seed
- 4:29Speaker 2: in the College Football Playoff. Again. I've been really proud
- 4:32Speaker 2: of the impact that he's had on our program. He
- 4:35Speaker 2: continues to perform in critical moments for us, he continues
- 4:40Speaker 2: to fight through adversity, and there is not only physically
- 4:45Speaker 2: but mentally as a guy that I'm very proud of.
- 4:48Speaker 1: We'll talk more about Quinn you We was on our
- 4:50Speaker 1: pre game show tomorrow, Mark Henry, Mike Carge in my
- 4:54Speaker 1: self Longcorns game, Get New and some a good discussion,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I promise you between us surrounding Quinn viewers and his
- 5:00Speaker 1: impact at Texas and uh, what he can do to
- 5:05Speaker 1: end his career at Texas on front of him, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 1: four more games, four more victories to make history. Okay,
- 5:12Speaker 1: diego Pavia. Actually we'll come back to that one. Obviously,
- 5:17Speaker 1: the transfer portal has been open and we we've you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: we've had CJ focal on, We've had Eric Henry on
- 5:21Speaker 1: talking about the portal additions for Texas. So far, they've
- 5:25Speaker 1: they've added three signees and still working on more. But
- 5:29Speaker 1: at the same time, this football staff is preparing for
- 5:32Speaker 1: a college football playoff game. We'll also trying to not
- 5:35Speaker 1: only recruit players out of the portal, but keep the
- 5:38Speaker 1: guys who are on their team out of the transfer portal.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So Steve Sarkistan was asked, how do you navigate the
- 5:44Speaker 1: fine line of preparing preparing for a playoff game will
- 5:47Speaker 1: trying to protect your assets your players.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, all we can do is do the
- 5:52Speaker 2: best we can do, and that's that's really you know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: finding the right balance of game prep, finding the right
- 6:00Speaker 2: balance of working with your players from a retention standpoint,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and finding the right balance of still looking at the
- 6:08Speaker 2: portal for needs that we obviously have on our roster
- 6:10Speaker 2: because of some attrition. And you know, I think I
- 6:14Speaker 2: expressed how I felt about this on Monday that this
- 6:17Speaker 2: you know, I think this calendar is going to need
- 6:19Speaker 2: to change and we're gonna have to to read This
- 6:22Speaker 2: is not I don't think when anybody intended to uh
- 6:25Speaker 2: to be occurring right now. And we're not the only
- 6:29Speaker 2: ones feeling it, you know, I'm I'm not here to
- 6:30Speaker 2: say we're not the only ones. This is it's a
- 6:32Speaker 2: poor system right now that that I think needs to
- 6:34Speaker 2: be looked at really hard to find a better mechanism
- 6:39Speaker 2: for the for the players quite frankly as much as
- 6:41Speaker 2: it is for the coaches and the teams. I mean,
- 6:43Speaker 2: how would I would hate to be on a team
- 6:46Speaker 2: that's trying to go compete for a national championship and
- 6:49Speaker 2: all the while dealing with phone calls and should I
- 6:51Speaker 2: go in the portal should I not? And my agent's
- 6:54Speaker 2: got to talk to them, and how much am I
- 6:55Speaker 2: going to get paid over theres I mean, it's just
- 6:58Speaker 2: it's a it's a poor system and a poor calendar. Really,
- 7:02Speaker 2: I think the premise of the idea is good, but
- 7:04Speaker 2: the calendar is really poor right now that we're going
- 7:07Speaker 2: to have to do a better job of. From a
- 7:09Speaker 2: coach head coaches standpoint, AFC A standpoint, an NCAA standpoint,
- 7:13Speaker 2: a CFP standpoint, we've got to get all the players
- 7:17Speaker 2: involved in this in the same room and find a
- 7:21Speaker 2: better mechanism and a better calendar moving forward for everybody,
- 7:25Speaker 2: because the way this is set up right now is
- 7:29Speaker 2: not it. This is not the way we can continue
- 7:32Speaker 2: to move forward.
- 7:32Speaker 1: It's got to be frustrating for players and coaches all
- 7:35Speaker 1: around to have to navigate through the chaos of a
- 7:39Speaker 1: transfer portal with a ball game in the middle of
- 7:43Speaker 1: swapping semesters. I am all for trying to push back
- 7:46Speaker 1: the transfer portal window until either after the postseason or
- 7:50Speaker 1: after New Year's to allow these teams to be able
- 7:52Speaker 1: to prepare for their postseason games. Well, well, that also
- 7:55Speaker 1: happened to deal with players leaving. I mean, think about it.
- 7:59Speaker 1: If you're in the NFL, right, it's like the regular
- 8:01Speaker 1: season ends. In between the regular season and the first
- 8:03Speaker 1: playoff game, free agency opens up. That makes zero sense, right,
- 8:07Speaker 1: it makes zero sense. So why do we do that
- 8:10Speaker 1: in college football? I don't understand. I'm right there with
- 8:13Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian. You got to figure out a way to
- 8:15Speaker 1: somehow change this because this the way this system is
- 8:18Speaker 1: currently set up, it's not working out at all. Clemson's defense,
- 8:22Speaker 1: we heard Eric Henry talk about it and kind of
- 8:23Speaker 1: how the Clemson side feels about it, how Texas feels
- 8:26Speaker 1: about it. Here's how sark feels about Clemson's defense and
- 8:30Speaker 1: what has stood out to him so far when preparing
- 8:32Speaker 1: for this game tomorrow.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, they've you know again, I think they're
- 8:37Speaker 2: They're front seven is very, very talented, and that's not
- 8:40Speaker 2: to take away the back end, but They've got some
- 8:42Speaker 2: really elite players in the front end, you know, with
- 8:46Speaker 2: Parker and Woods and Carter and yeah, true freshman linebacker
- 8:50Speaker 2: who's making a ton of plays, and and they call
- 8:53Speaker 2: the game with that in mind. You know, it's a
- 8:56Speaker 2: very aggressive mindset and their high pressure unit team and
- 9:00Speaker 2: they give you all the different pressures to try to
- 9:03Speaker 2: create those one on one opportunities for those guys to
- 9:06Speaker 2: impact the ballgame. And so to me, that's what stands out.
- 9:10Speaker 2: They know where their strengths lie and they try to
- 9:13Speaker 2: play to those strengths. It's a very athletic front and
- 9:16Speaker 2: they play to that as well. You know, there's a
- 9:17Speaker 2: lot of movement and a lot of opportunities for those
- 9:20Speaker 2: guys getting one on one matchups and where they can
- 9:23Speaker 2: try to affect the game that way, especially getting after.
- 9:25Speaker 1: The quarterback three o'clock take off tomorrow Texas and Clemson.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Our covers begins at noon right here on Am thirteen hundred.
- 9:32Speaker 1: The zone after these messages will be back to
