- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Hey guys, welcome back to Future Anarchy.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: This is your host, Ekta, and I'm really, really excited to introduce you guys to the brand that we are hosting today because as many of you know, I'm always in search for really great products that are, you know, in the realm of what we call like organic and natural, but they're really soothing and nourishing for our skin, especially when it comes to niche categories like you know, any lip balms or anything that has to do with more delicate areas of our skin.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I think that's a very kind of like a pain point for me as a consumer.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: So I'm really, really excited.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the CEO and founder of Hene Organics, Laura Zhao.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the show, Laura.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to host you.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Hi, thanks for having me.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm excited to learn about your journey and just what led to the creation of your brand because I really love it.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: It's it's a very, very nice brand and kind of a uh breath of fresh air for me as a consumer because I don't really gravitate towards natural beauty or you know, organic products, you could say.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, it's well, you know, let me know what you want to learn about henne.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, it's um it's been an interesting journey, I think, as with most brand founders.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited to share, you know, whatever you want to learn about us.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would just, I mean, I want to get started with where your inspiration started.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Like where did you get the inspiration to start the brand and what was your personal journey that led to creating it?
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would like to say it's kind of a combination of inspiration and desperation.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: So the inspiration came from living abroad.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, so if we kind of rewind back to prior to us launching HENA in 2015, I was living abroad in Sweden, New Zealand, and Australia.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: And the reason I mentioned this is because uh around I would say 2008, 2009 was when I started being a lot more conscious with the type of products I was buying when it came to my food products, my produce.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I learned some interesting things when I was in college about a certain types of, you know, how certain types of produce are grown and made.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: And it just, yeah, it kind of took me on a little bit.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: I went down a rabbit hole and then kind of took me on a journey when it came to that.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: And then my 0809, I started wanting to use some more natural products.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: And one thing I would do like to emphasize is I'm not a purist in the sense that I'm not one of those people that's going to tell you, like, you have to use natural and organic every single thing.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I like to think of it as, you know, being practical, living in the everyday world and trying to use, you know, be more conscious of what I use.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: And so that's when the journey started.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: And at that time, I noticed because I was still living in the US, that there weren't a lot of great natural options.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: There were, of course, you know, brands that you could find at Whole Foods and even some that you could find in other stores, but they didn't work well.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: And if I'm being honest, they also did not look that great.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, what I mean by that is, you know, as someone who has always had a love for design and aesthetics, I'm not saying that looks are everything.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Obviously, it's not, but it's a little bit disheartening to want to swap out, you know, my Dior lipsticks and my, you know, my beautiful skincare products, like aesthetically beautiful for these ones that looked like, you know, let's just say a little bit too eco, you know, just because you're eco doesn't mean it really looks like you just maybe walked by a tree and scraped off some tree bark and then put it together and be like, oh my gosh, look, we're green, we're green.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: And so it didn't work well, didn't look great, you know.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: And when I was moved abroad uh in 2010, the options, for example, in Sweden, they were a lot better, maybe not where I thought that they I wanted it to be, but a lot better where you actually have products that you could buy in the pharmacy, products that you could go um purchase that looked better, worked a little bit better.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: And so it was a little bit easier to continue my journey.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And then the desperation came when we moved back to the states and we originally initially moved back to, well, we actually lived in Vegas for a while.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: So we moved to Nevada, and I'm just not cut out for the dry desert.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: I learned that very quickly.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: So um I've always been a little bit of a lip balm addict, which is I think why we ended up launching a lot of lip products.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: I've always loved lymbalms, tinted lip balms, anything lip-related, lipsticks, you name it, just a little bit of an addict.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: And I never had an issue with my lips because I always prided myself on taking really great care of them.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And when we moved to the Vegas Desert, I did start having issues with dry and cracked lips.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna pretend like I created some new product that never existed before.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Of course, there were lip balms on the market at the time.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna act like there weren't, but they weren't, there wasn't a lip balm that was what I was looking for.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: I wanted something as clean as possible, but also as effective as possible.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: And I also wanted something I could actually be proud to carry, you know, something I wouldn't be embarrassed to whip out when I'm in a restaurant or if I'm out and about, and something that I could just feel, you know, I at that time I'd already focused a lot more on simplicity and wanting to have high quality of everything I owned as opposed to quantity.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: And so it just, you know, it didn't really cut it, you know, the the, you know, the birth bees or the, you know, those type of products.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: And they like for like I said, they didn't work super well, but they also just it was like products I would probably shove at the very, very bottom of my person, like kind of not secretly, but you know, quickly apply and then put it back down into my bag and hopefully no one sees.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And I so I felt like there was a little bit of a gap in the market.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, I henna started, we started in 2015 and initially just started with one lip balm, started in my home kitchen.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: I convinced my husband to join me in this venture.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: And so I joke that it's a labor of love because he essentially worked for free for years.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Happy wife, happy life.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: And so, and now now we run it together.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: And so, um, yeah, and fast forward today, we are mostly a lip care brand.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: We have a few other types of products, but we are primarily lips.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I really love your lip products, and you know, I wanted you to tell the story because I very rarely find lip products that I gravitate towards personally speaking, because I have very sensitive lips.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: It sounds kind of weird to say that, I feel like, but I just have like for me personally as a consumer, either things just make my lips peel or they're just not like nourished, or they never look the way I want them to look, you know, after I I've invested in them, you know, whether it's like a lip mask or a lip balm or whatever.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: And a lot of times I know for me growing up, I don't know if you felt this way, but for me growing up, I always wanted to wear lipsticks, you know, and every time I did, it always resulted in like really cracked, trapped lips, you know, and it was almost as if like it was like a guilty pleasure that I had, you know, it's like I'm gonna wear a lipstick, but then I know I'm gonna have to deal with this for two days after this, you know, because it's gonna cause problems, especially if you're going if, you know, if you're going out at night and you're, you know, you're wearing your makeup for God knows how many hours, you know, it just leaves an impact over time.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And so I completely resonated with what you said because that dryness component, the non-nourishing component, like it's just been a redundant theme, I feel like, in the industry for so long when it comes to lip care that it almost like for me as a consumer, it turned me off for a long time.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: You know, like I stopped buying like the chapsticks and the, you know, like the Burksby's and stuff.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Nothing wrong with these brands and not pointing any, you know, fingers or anything, but they never worked for me.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: So I totally get it.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: But I have really enjoyed your products.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I feel like they're it's almost like pleasurable now to like use lip products, you know, and I I really appreciate that as a consumer.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: So definitely you've you've done something wonderful here.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I I I think it's great that you mentioned that part about, you know, a lot of products just kind of damaging your lips or just not making you feel as wonderful as you should, and especially when you're shelling out cash for higher, you know, more prestige brands, nicer products.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: I used to wear quite a bit of lipstick.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: This was when I was, I was probably in my 20s at that time.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: And at that time, I think I didn't care as much about the effects that the effect that it had on my lips.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: And like I said, I tried to, you know, kind of mitigate it by, okay, I'll only wear it here and there, and then I'll make sure to take really take care of my lips.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: But for me, it was actually just so high maintenance to actually be able to wear lipstick and not destroy my lips.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I just had this very drawn-out routine.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: And I also, as I got older, I sort of started gravitating more toward, I would say, low maintenance and just no fuss type of doing my makeup.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: For example, one thing I wanted to mention with is one of our best products, our best-selling products is our lip tint.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: And what I really like about those ones is it kind of doubles as it can double as a lip balm and lip color.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: And I don't really have to think about it.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: It looks great in my handbag, but I can also just kind of reapply it as I go.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: And if I forget, let's say I have lunch or I have coffee and I forget to put it back on, it's okay because it kind of just fades naturally.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: And the, you know, very, very important thing is it doesn't age my lips and it doesn't make them look dry.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Because having dry, shriveled lips, it will age your lips decades.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's amazing the difference it makes.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Like I've had some people that have commented a few times that, oh, have you gotten a little bit of work done on your lips?
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: And the thing is, I don't knock anyone who has, but I honestly haven't.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Just, and the main reason is just because I feel like I've kind of reversed age my lips by just really taking care of them and letting them heal and just making sure they're always hydrated.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: And I think, of course, our lip care, the products in our line have been the main, you know, reason for that.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: And I think it should be enjoyable, like you said, it should be pleasurable.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: You should be actually feeling like you're benefiting your lips, you're benefiting your skin, and also just feel like you're pampering and taking care of yourself.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: And so that's definitely been one of the goals for our line.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Like I want customers to really feel like they don't have to wait till hashtag self-care Sunday.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying that it's not fantastic to really take care of yourself for one and a half, two hours.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I've got an 18-month-old, and sometimes I have to, I don't even remember if I wash my face or if did I brush my teeth?
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Like, let me check the toothbrush.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's wet.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: I think I brushed my teeth.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can't, you know, life happens and sometimes it's just very easy to go days or even weeks without feeling like you did anything for yourself.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And that obviously isn't good because you know, when your tank is empty, you're not, you aren't that helpful to others, and you know, you're not going to be the best version of yourself.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm not saying my lip balm or our lip tints are gonna solve every problem in your life, but I think having those brief moments, even if they're just, you know, a minute here, a few minutes there throughout the day, it helps you, at least for me, kind of reset and ground myself and also, like I said, feel as if, hey, I improved myself during these few minutes, you know, my lips feel better or my skin feels better.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, for me, that has been one of my main goals with our products.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: I, you know, I always like to say, like our henna products, it's not rocket scientists, like it's not rocket science.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: I'm not trying to downplay our products, but I want our products to actually be very easy to use, very easy to understand.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: So you don't feel like you have to watch 20 YouTube videos to learn how to use one of our products, you know.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: I just want it to become a part of their daily routine and feel like, like I said, like these little moments of luxury and just self-care people can have every day and not have to, you know, wonder when is this gonna happen?
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, I you know, feel guilty because, oh, you know what?
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: I I have got three or four weeks before I can actually do a one-hour routine, or maybe you won't be able to do it for months.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: And that's also okay, right?
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: We all have different schedules.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: So yeah, not to go on a long, you know, spiel, but I just think it's really important to kind of check in with yourself a few times a day.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: And I think with our products, it's just like a tiny, tiny way you can do that.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Other ways you can do it would be, you know, sit down and enjoy that cup of tea or coffee for 10 minutes or you know, just those small moments, moments that you know, you're able to breathe and just uh kind of refocus and you know, just have some moments of peace.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: I completely, completely resonate with everything you said, honestly, because you know, I think a lot of times we get so wrapped up in like the self-care is like because I I mean, obviously, people are growing more aware of the need for self-care for from many different angles.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Like, obviously, there's a mental health component, and also just because everyone's busy, you know, it's like we want to have that time.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: We want to have that personal time that we spend on ourselves and not have to worry about the rest of the world.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: And I think that now with that growing awareness, it's like the prime time to find the products that work for us.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: You know, it's it's time to like really be like, okay, what is going to make me feel better?
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: You know, whether it's at night, whether it's throughout your day, whether it's in the morning, it doesn't matter.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: But like whatever you're doing it, you should feel like whatever I'm using, whether it's skincare, whether it's, you know, I don't know, whatever it is for you, like it should be a meaningful investment.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: In that way.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: So I think it's really important.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: And I was gonna actually say, you know, I've tried like what going back to like repairing like lips, for example, like trap lips, I've tried so many.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Like I cannot even tell you, like, I like I don't have a brand, and I'm sure you've gone through way more than I have just to perfect your own line.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: But as a consumer, the amount of money I've spent just like going to a gas station and picking up like a like you know what I mean, like a random chopstick or a random lip, it's crazy.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: And I'm just like, I've never used them more than once.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Was that I said I remember those days.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like it's nuts.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: And it's like when all of that adds up, especially like right now, we're we're in a recession.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: So it's like, you know, when you need something, you our impulse is just to go buy whatever.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, like how much waste are we creating when we do that?
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: You know, and so it's so important to have products that like like you said, like they look good, they feel good, they they are good for you, you know.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Like one of my favorite products in your line, I mean, just for our listeners, is the lip mask.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I love the lip mask.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: It's actually doing what it's supposed to do.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: So, like at night, like for me, I'm I'm a big person, I'm a big believer in like at night, I do most of my skincare, you know, especially the stuff that's like healing.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And so when I wake up in the morning, I want to feel reset.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Like that's my ultimate goal is whatever I put on my face or my lips or wherever, I want to feel reset.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: And with this lip mask, I've been consistently using it.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I've noticed like even like the little fine lines you start to develop like around your lips that a lot of times like lipstick can bleed into.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: That's like a concern, I think, with aging that most of us have.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Like I've started to notice like those are less prominent that I'm not having issues with that.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: My lips are smoother, you know, it doesn't feel like they're peeling a lot or like they're trapped, or you know, whatever.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Because I'm always like, that's my personal, you know what I mean, concern.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm noticing for myself that like with consistency, like the products are really doing what they're supposed to do.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: And I've never had that really with lip products because it's always like one and done, you know, like okay, use it, go, done, never think about it again, kind of thing.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: So it's become a ritual.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: And I think there's a lot that can be said about that, you know, especially like I've I don't know if you grew up in the 90s, um, but I did, you know, I'm a millennial.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: And so we were big on like lip jars.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: So like it was a big thing.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, you have a lip jar and then you kind of apply it throughout the day.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: And I always I love that that you have that component as well in your brand, is this nostalgic feeling, you know, of like, okay, whatever I'm using, like it kind of reminds me of being younger, and it's actually better for me than whatever I was using back then.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: So I love it.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: I think it's a really cool concept that you've come up with.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm a millennial as well, and I know what you mean.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: I've I've actually always loved lip products in jars.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: I know it's not for everyone.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Some people don't like dipping their finger.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: We have products that you, you know, that you can just apply directly on your lips.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I'm a sucker for jar products.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Like my favorite lip balm is our jar lip balm.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: And I will carry that sucker with me everywhere.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: And I actually don't use the stick version very much at all just because I love the feeling of dipping my finger and choosing how much I want to put on.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: And oh, I've got a little dry spot of my nose or a little bit of my knuckle.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Let's put some on there.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, I love that feeling of that jar.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: And I think someone like me, I always I'm the kind of person that never wants to run out of anything.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: You know, I've got extra pens, extra whatever in my handbag.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: And so I like having a bigger jar because I know I'm not gonna run out, you know, unless the jar and I would never have a jar near empty in my bag.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: I'd probably swap it out and use that one at home and finish it.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: But yeah, just knowing I've got a lot of backup, it just feels like it, like, you know, I feel safe, like just in case I've got some dry patches or I need something.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Um, sometimes if I want, I like to have like a I joke about, you know, the glows, uh the glazed donut look, but I do kind of like to have a slightly shinier or glowing face.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: So if I feel like my skin's looking a little bit dull, I might actually just put a tiny bit and put on my eyelids just to give me a little pick-me-up if I'm in public.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: So yeah, definitely love the jar.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: And I really like that you brought up the point of waste, right?
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Because with our brand, yes, we consider ourselves more of a luxury beauty brand.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: We're not at the price point of some of the very, very, very expensive brands, but we consider ourselves more affordable luxury, I would say.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: But um, I think that, you know, our products, one of the many reasons that they truly are worth the money is first off, like you said, they actually work.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: We formulate and manufacture everything in-house, and we are a small family-run, self-funded business.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: And the reason I like to mention that is, you know, everyone has their own path.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: But one of the benefits of this type of path is I don't have an investor breathing down my neck telling me I need to have even better margins because they want to see better numbers.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: If I'm making a product, I just want to give my customer the most value I possibly can for the money that they're giving me in return.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: And so I just don't skimp.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: We don't use filler ingredients.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: A lot of times, our hash, whatever whether you want to call it the filler ingredient or the ingredient that has the highest ratio is oftentimes the one that other brands that charge two or three times the price have as their hero ingredient and use like 0.3%, right?
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: And so that's one of the reasons why our products work so well is all of the ingredients that are the most effective, you get not just a lot of it, but you get the right ratios of it, right?
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: So it's not like we just slot the formulas together either.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: And then on top of that, having higher quality with anything, you tend to take better care of it.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: I learned that in my when I um in my early 20s, I started switching away from being an absolute maximalist to a minimalist when I was living abroad.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: That's one of the things I learned.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: I had to because I could only bring two suitcases with me for about four and a half, five years, living from country to country.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: You have to pare down what you what you use and you know what you wear every day.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: And when you have something of higher quality, it isn't something that you just toss or you accidentally break because you don't care, right?
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: Um as an example, you not even just lip products, but it's like sunglasses.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: I used to have so many pairs of sunglasses when I was younger and I would sit on them accidentally in the car or they get smashed in my handbag, never use a sunglass case because I'm like, why would I do that?
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: They're like 20 bucks.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Who cares?
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Well, needless to say, I would go through so many sunglasses every year, and a lot of them would just magically go missing because who knows where I left them.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: And I didn't really care because they were cheap, right?
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: And then I got my first pair of nice sunglasses, I remember.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: And I babied those sunglasses so much.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: I remember it was a pair of Gucci sunglasses, which fast forward to today don't look as good on me as they did at that time, a little bit trendy.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: But I put that in the case.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: I took care of it because I knew this is something high quality.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: I want it to last for many years.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: And although it is not my style today, I still have those sunglasses.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: They're actually in my closet right now.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: And I'm pretty sure all those lip balms I used to buy when I was a lip balm addict, they are long, you know, and far gone.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: And I used to buy so many of them because some would get lost, you know, when I was out and about.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: And I would just put them in random places.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Because once again, knowing that it was cheap made it better.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: But what is it cheaper when you buy 10 times, 20 times more than what you need?
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Because if you just buy one good one and you take care of it, whether it's your lip balm or whether it's a pair of sunglasses, you don't need to repurchase.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Of course, with our lip balm, you will need to reach it when you finish it, but you know, you don't need 10 lip balms because you're not going to need to use it as often because it's actually going to work.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's not a lip balm that's gonna make you feel good for two minutes and then dry out your lips afterwards.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: And it's a product you're actually gonna want to make sure you don't lose because it looks great.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, it's you actually end up wasting less.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: I think it's a little bit of this, you know, myth that people think that, you know, just I of course some things can be overpriced, some things are not worth the money, but not everything that's priced higher is trying to scam you or swindle you.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: You know, sometimes it's it it you actually get your money's worth.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And one thing I've I've always been really proud of is, you know, we haven't done many trade shows, but the trade shows that we have done, when we're we have our booth set up, people are genuinely so shocked at how much cheaper we are than what our ingredients look like and how our packaging looks.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: You know, when they actually come up and they're like, oh, wait, the lip products are nine, like you have products as like as low as$19.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: And they were like, oh, I thought this was this product would be at least 30 or 40.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: They're pleasantly surprised.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And I and I that's something I'm just really proud of because no, we are not a really, really cheap brand.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: We're not, you know, we're not your, you know, your whole foods brand type of, you know,$2 lip balms.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: We are not that.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: But what you get instead is, like I said, really high quality products made in house with a team that's actually paid fair and competitive wages as well.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: I think that's something that's important to mention.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Like everyone who works for henna works for, you know, we're all in the same building.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: We work and Everything's done in-house, and I think that really shows when it comes to everything from our products to our packaging to our customer service.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: If you have an issue with your order, you're not talking to someone who's, you know, a continent away, you're talking with someone who's probably sitting across from me in my office right now, you know.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: So those things are just I think quality, there's there's a lot to be said with quality and I just think craftsmanship in general.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of people are starting to really, you know, yearn for that again.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Because this whole like mass, you know, fast fashion, fast beauty.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of people are getting tired of it and want something that they can, you know, there's something a little bit more substantial, something that's it's interesting.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: It's interesting that you're saying that because I am a huge believer.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we've been through our 20s, right?
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: And we uh we remember what it was like, you know, getting whatever you needed, you know, buying whatever you needed at the time, and then that's it.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: And you used it two times and that was it, you know, and and whatever.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: But like now I feel like it's crazy when we look back because for me, like in my 30s, I'm like, why did I even do that?
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Because if I had just invested like a little, not even a lot more money, but just like five, 10 extra dollars, yeah, it would have been like something I would have carried with me.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Like, I completely relate with you when you talked about, you know, going abroad because I studied abroad for many years.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: You know, I was um doing a lot of like pro bono work in the Caribbean.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: I was the same situation as you had two suitcases I could take with me, literally lived out of suitcases for many years.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: And I remember I had one makeup bag, and that makeup bag had the most like absolutely cannot live without these products, kind of, you know, that's what I had in there.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: And most of them, I will not lie, were luxury brands.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Like they were genuinely what you would put under luxury, not because, you know, I'm bougie or whatever.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: No, it was because their quality spoke and it really was something I used till the last drop.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: You know, it was something that I couldn't compromise with because I knew that every time I pick up this product, it's going to work.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: It's going to do what I want it to do.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna have to compromise.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna have to go to some random store in this random country I'm in, you know what I mean, and try to find an equivalent.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: It was just something that worked.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: And I think there's a lot to be said about that.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: And with the youth now, I see that, yeah, fast fashion is coming up and all these fast, whatever you want to call them, fast beauty, fashion, whatever.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, how many times do we watch TikTok and we see there's a new product every day that everyone's like raving about?
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: And it just makes me sick because I'm like, you guys are literally propagating waste, you know, like that's all this is doing.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: It's not creating solutions, it's not creating products that you're gonna then, you know, refer to tell your friend about and be like, hey, look, this really worked for me, or this is the lipstick I use every time I'm going out, or every time I have an event.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: You're not doing that.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: You're just trying stuff and throwing it away, you know?
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: And so I have a huge problem, like as a consumer, when I see that.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: And I'm just like, I think there's a responsibility that needs to be on the shoulders of the consumers, but also the brands that are creating these products.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Because at the end of the day, if you're making 500 shades of lipstick and you're just putting that out there, obviously people are gonna come to you and buy your$3 lipstick, you know what I mean?
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: And like use it once and throw it away.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: And then you're just contributing to this mass waste problem that we have, and then you're gonna turn the other cheek and pretend like it doesn't even exist.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: And that's a real problem in our world, you know?
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: And and so I have like multifaceted problems with with how consumers are being like kind of marketed to now, you know, but even more than we were marketed to.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: And I think we were kind of like the experiment generation.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we were we were we were the test monies.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: I remember like Zanga and MySpace and things that people these days would have no idea what it means.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: I think I fully agree.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: I I, you know, it's it's a little bit conflicting to see that as, you know, because the thing is, I understand, I understand from a socioeconomic perspective.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: I understand, you know, not everybody can afford um even brands like ours.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: And I I completely understand.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: I think, you know, of course we we all are doing the best we can.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: And of course, there's a time, like there's, you know, there's there's a need for all different types of price point products, all different types of products, but it really, it doesn't really help the situation when, you know, these days, brands, a lot of times both high-end and not alike, are jumping on trends.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: And, you know, whether it's TikTok or whatever's happening on social media, it's very tempting to launch something with an ingredient that's trending or some something that's very, you know, very now.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: And nobody really wins in that situation because as the consumer, you are getting a worse product.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: Because if it's a very trendy product, trust me, they haven't spent much time creating that product.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Whether they're forwarding in-house or they're, you know, they're having someone else do it, not much time has been put into it because they're kind of it's like a race with you know, a race with the clock.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: They're trying to launch it before it's no longer trending.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: And that could be in a week.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: And so you're not really getting the best that that brand can offer.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: And then on the other side, I mean, these are products that are not going to be made with that much care in all categories, especially especially with certain products that are, you know, a lot of products are also made abroad, and you don't really know what the working conditions are or uh of the people who are making those products, and you're also you don't really know how safe they are for you, you know.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: They're made in other countries, they have different types of regulations.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: And of course, some countries have even more strict regulations than we do, like the EU.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: So it's not always bad, right?
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: But sometimes they're made in a way where you really don't know for, like I said, the circumstances in which they're made.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: You also don't know, is it a sanitary environment?
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: How sanitary are the products that you're using?
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Is there, you know, weird contamination with things that you're not even, you know, and then you just end up buying and you're using on yourself, on your family.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: And um, yeah, like I said, you you definitely get tempted as a brand.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: And for us, I think, you know, for better or for worse, being self-funded, it kind of forces us not to do that.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: I'm not because I'm not gonna say I would never consider it, but every time I do or I get tempted because I see something that's kind of trending, I remind myself, first off, I can't because I'm not I'm not, I don't just have an endless bank account with other people's money where I can just say, yeah, I'm gonna do that.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: And even if I did have investors, I know that's not how it works, anyways.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: But I my point is it's not like I have the capital to just jump on something like that.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: But also, I, you know, to preserve my business and to make sure that it does continue and we don't, you know, shut down in the future, we need to launch products that stand the test of time, you know, products that can feel modern but are actually timeless.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: A product that you're gonna want to use 10 years from now, not, you know, you're you love it now, but oh September, it's not cool anymore, right?
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Because TikTok says that there's a new trend for lips and you have to jump on that.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: That's just not what we do.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: And so we we get asked, we have gotten asked sometimes, uh, sometimes it's even by retailers, could we would we be open to launching this specific product because they see a demand for it right this minute?
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: And we always politely decline because we're not that kind of brand.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: And like I mentioned earlier, if we were to do that, you're not gonna get the best from henna because I can't give you a superb product or a product that I can be truly proud of and stand behind in a two or three-month turnaround time.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: For me, that isn't possible.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: I can give you a mediocre product, but I don't do mediocre, whether that's anything, it's my personality type.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: I'm a perfectionist for better or for worse.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, one of our lip tents lit, we have like a nude lip tint, and I can't tell you how many variations we made of that one before we launched.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: And I know that I was a little bit annoying and I will had to almost be apologetic about it.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm sorry, but we have to make it again.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Like, this is not good enough.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, I can't launch a product in two, three months and smile and tell someone, oh, this is the best that we've got, because that would just be a lie.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: And that hurts the customer because now I'm not giving you the most bang for your butt, you know.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: By telling you, you know, oh, look how pretty it is, but oh, not mentioning the fact that I spent no time creating this product.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what what gets me is like you have such a beautiful range in your lip tints.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: I was gonna actually really compliment you on that because I, you know, as a person of color, I've always struggled with finding nude colors.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: And by nude, I don't always mean like, you know, just like a matte brown.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of us get confused with the color with the word nude because we think, oh, it's gonna be like this, like beigey or whatever, you know, whatever that is, like a brown or a tan.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: No, it's not.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: It's for me, a nude is like almost like it's natural enough to where it looks like it's my normal lip color, but like maybe a little bit more like color to it, like added to it.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to compliment you on this because there are so many colors in the range.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: For example, one of my favorite ones is Intrigue.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: I really love this because I can take like my ring finger and just like put a little bit on and just tap it on my lips, and it just makes my lips look very natural still, but it adds that color in to where now I feel like they just look more alive, you know?
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: And that's what I always wanted as a consumer when I thought of a nude color.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like, you know, I never went out there and looking for that like lip liner and like matte lipstick and then a lip gloss on top.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: That's not my personal choice and it's not my look.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: It's something for me, it it's more important to have something I can wear to work, something I can wear into a meeting or, you know, just for my own self and feel like, yeah, you know, it's beautiful.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: It makes me feel it accentuates the, you know, features I want to kind of, you know, highlight, but it's not going to overwhelm the rest of my my face or my look.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: And so I think you've done a beautiful job with the color range.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: There's a lot here for people of color, and that's something that means something very, it's very near and dear to my heart because I feel like for us, for some reason, the products that are targeted to those those who have melanin rich skin, they're either very like from the makeup side at least, it's very like heavy makeup.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: It's very like yeah, like it's thick, it's like cakey, it's yeah, you know, you're either in it or you're not.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: And it's just like that doesn't have to be the case every time.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: Like I have so many colleagues who are, you know, they don't even wear makeup.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: And you know what their main reason for it?
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: I've I've talked to them, I've asked them, like, hey, you know, like why don't you wear you never wear makeup?
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: And they're like, Yeah, because I don't want to look like a clown walking into a patient's room.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't, I can't do it.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: There's no options really.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: And so that's a real concern.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: And it's never really addressed.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: But, you know, that's something I wanted to really highlight with your range because it's yeah, they're lip, they're lip tints, but they're very, very versatile in how you can layer them, how you can, you know, put a little bit more on.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: If you're gonna go after work to like a like, you know, a cocktail hour or go out to dinner or whatever, you can layer it on.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: You can, you know, make it like a stronger, bolder color, but you don't have to during the day.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: Like there's a lot of versatility there.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: And I think for a lot of brands, they kind of miss the mark when it comes to this, you know?
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: And it's it's really kind of disappointing for me when I see that because it shouldn't have to be one way or the other.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: We shouldn't have to pick between you either get the absolute, like full throttle, you know what I mean, kind of feel and look, or you get nothing at all.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: It shouldn't be like that.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: So I really appreciate that.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: And I think it's really important to have products like the ones you've created, especially with the lip tint, because there are so many professionals out there that just we just can't wear full beat makeup.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: Like there's no way.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: Like you're gonna look ridiculous in your day-to-day job.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: It's just not gonna work.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: And so I really, really think that's very important.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: And especially if there's anyone out there who's like, you know, you just joined the workforce or you're just getting into that professional, like, leg of your career where you're like, you know, I need better options, right?
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: It's I don't need nighttime makeup all freaking day long.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: This is a really great option, you know, and it's something you can use every single day.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: That's the bottom line.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't have to think about it, you know?
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: That's the huge for me.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: So thank you.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: I know I'm I ranted there for a minute, but I really appreciate it.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, no, at all.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I think you brought up so many good points.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: Um, I wanted to touch on the point you mentioned about just working on different skin tones.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm ethnically Chinese, and that was something that was something for me from the start that was just kind of a no-brainer.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: I I wasn't launching henna to actually focus on any specific um group of people.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: For me, it just was a no-brainer.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: It has to work on everyone, you know.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: So when we decided to launch lip color and go beyond just balms and masks, I was like, of course it has to work on everyone, you know, and that is actually one of the reasons why I really wanted to do lip tints and not lipstick.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: Lipstick is truly more unforgiving, you know, it's that strong.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: It you're gonna have issues having it match all types of skin tones, and you will be inevitably forced to launch way more colors.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: And even then, it's not, you know, it's gonna be hard to please most people.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: But also on top of that, you're gonna have products that are gonna dry out people's lips and make their lips oftentimes look worse.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: And it can be very frustrating as a consumer to see these beautiful ads online or you know, commercials where some model just has picture perfect, probably photoshopped or you know, altered lips, and there's not, you know, a flake in sight and they're just perfectly buttery smooth.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: And then you try to use the same product and you just get the gnarliest, flakiest, you know, weirdest looking lips.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: You're like, uh, this is not as advertised.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: So with our lip tints, you know, yeah, like I really like to emphasize how universally flattering they are.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: I I'm so glad you mentioned bare, which is I call it our dusty road slash nude shade, because no, it's not nude for everyone.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: It's nude for some people, but I call it more of a dusty rose.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: And before our own, I never wore any color that could even be remotely categorized as nude because I always felt like it made me look like a cancer patient.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: I would see Dashians wearing it, and I'm like, if I wore that color, I would look like I literally am, you know, dying because it's not a drug.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: And once I had, of course, the drying factor.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: And so that was something that was really important.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: And I tested it out on a lot of, I would, I joked, willing human test bunnies, because we obviously don't test on animals.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: And I would just make sure I tried them on all different types of skin tones.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: My husband, who is a very fair-skinned blonde Swedish guy, he has participated in making sure the lip tints look on his skin tone.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: So I really tested all types of people because yeah, I I want, I want any person to be able to use our lip tins.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: And being in control, I think is so important as well.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: Because, like you mentioned, whether you're in the workforce or whatever you're doing, these types of lip tins can really carry you throughout your day.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: So if you want kind of a no-makeup makeup look, like maybe you're going to the grocery store, or maybe you're gonna take a gym class and you just want to have like a slight hint of makeup to spruce up your face, put one or two layers on, right?
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: And then if you want to go out for drinks or cocktails for a date night, you can put additional layers on and then you can have a stronger look.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: And yeah, depending on your natural lip color, you can adjust it accordingly.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: If you have really fair, you know, very fair skin or very light colored lips, you'll probably use less layers.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: And if you have slightly darker lips like I do, you use more.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: And that's okay because it's not like you said, it's not that kind of cakey makeup where the more layers or the more you use, the more outlandish you look.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: You just it'll it's just gonna blend in with your natural lip color and it's just gonna look beautiful.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, you just basically you adjust it however you see fit based on how your natural lip color is, based on what mood you're in, what occasion.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: It's up to you.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: And oh, you want to top it up?
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: Don't need to take out a mirror.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: You can just kind of discreetly put it on, whether sometimes I literally reapply when I'm walking.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: I'm just literally like walking from one place to another.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: Um, when I was in, for example, when I was in Sweden recently and I was walking in Stockholm, I'm pushing my daughter with the stroller and I've got the diaper bag, and we're walking on the cobblestone.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: And I would just kind of take it out with my, you know, my crossbody bag with one hand and then apply quick layer after lunch and pop it back in.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: And I want that to be how I don't you don't have to use it exactly the way I do it, of course, but I just want it to be easy.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: You know, like I said, I want these products to be easy.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: I want them to actually make your lips look and feel great.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: And I don't want, you know, I don't want people to have to feel like they have to sacrifice, you know, whether it's products that work well or products that look great or products that, you know, don't affect their health.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Like you can actually have it all.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: You don't have to just pick one category of what you're looking for.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: And I think there's a lot to be said also about like international standards of beauty, you know what I mean, when we talk about this, because like I love that you brought up that you've, you know, you kind of like the inspiration came when you were traveling a lot and you saw a lot of different places.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: And like, I think that is something that like culture is something we just don't discuss enough in beauty.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the flat out truth.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like we talk a lot about what's trending and like what's cool in America, but like we don't talk about like what is the everyday woman globally using?
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Like, what does she really want?
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: You know, like I can tell you, my mother, she is a very educated person, grew up in India, came to America, re-educated herself here.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: And I kid you not, I've seen my mom wear like a dark lipstick maybe four times in her life.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Like, maybe, you know what I mean?
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Going out to like a party or something like that.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: She's a very like natural, like, just wants the natural look.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean she doesn't use products.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: It just means that she wants to feel like whatever she's doing is just it's her business.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: She she knows what she put on her face, she knows what she used, but the whole world doesn't need to like know about it.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: And I feel like that message has for me, as I've kind of grown up and I've traveled as well, like I've learned that a lot of women around the world are like that.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: They're, you know, their beauty secrets are their beauty secrets.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: They they like what they like and they use what they use and and keep on using it for many years.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: And I think that's something we can all really kind of learn from, you know, honestly, because at the end of the day, your favorite lipstick's always gonna be your favorite lipstick, you know?
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: And I I know we've all had that feeling of like, you know, for me it was a blush.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: Like I remember when my favorite blush went out of stock and they stopped making it.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: I was like devastated, you know, like I was like, where am I gonna find this again?
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: You know, it's it's something that I use every every time I'm like getting ready.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: And I know a lot of us can relate to that.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: And that's also why a lot of cultures like they'll make their own cosmetics or their beauty products.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: Like, I can't tell you countless, the countless amount of times I've heard people say, yeah, like, you know, my grandmother had a recipe and I kept making that, you know, like I did the same thing and I to this day I still use it.
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: And that always, for me as a consumer, it always like kind of warms my heart just to hear that, because really what it tells me about the psychology of consumers is that we want products that are not only tried and tested, but tried, tested, and like reaffirmed, you know, by our family, our friends, ourselves, like over time, you know.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: And so that is something to really think about and and really consider when we're approaching beauty.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: Because unfortunately, the way the Western world has defined beauty has it it is kind of like the Kardashians and the celebrities and and how they're always changing their looks and they've always got this bold face on.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: And that's fine.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: It's a beautiful thing to do if that's what you want to do.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: But for the average woman, I just find it hard to believe that most of us are walking around with a full beat every day.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: And like we're not.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're not.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: We're just people walking around, they look very different in real life than they do on camera, you know.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: But like when you, for example, like the crazy contouring phase.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: I saw a lot of really strange-looking faces in public.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: They do not, you know, it it does not translate as well in natural daylight with all the contouring and all those things.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I think that yeah, I definitely agree with you on a lot of those points that you mentioned.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: I think that when it comes to everyday life and with a lot of cultures, you know, you mentioned your mom, and I think I actually got very, whether you want to call it inspired or just I guess influenced by living in Sweden because that's where I've spent the most time outside of the US.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: And one thing I really like about just Swedish or Scandinavian beauty and with their culture is they love the less is more look and they really like that effortless look.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't say exactly the same as, you know, I'll I'll use the comparison of French women because it's a little bit more widely known outside of, you know, in the You read my mind.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: You read my mind.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: Like the French women having that Genesis qua and that just that perfectly imperfect look.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: That's actually very much what they like in Sweden as well.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Women, they're it's not that they're not trying.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, they are definitely still making an effort, but they want to look like they just naturally woke up looking that beautiful.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Um and the thing is, a lot of it is just making sure that you don't have absolutely every hair strand in place.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: You know, you don't have to have the perfect, perfect eyeliner, or your lips don't have to look like you spent 10 hours on them.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: You just want to look like this is just a slight enhancement of your natural beauty.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: It is also a more doable look.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's having that, you know, natural makeup look can also take some time, depending on how you want it and who you are.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: But it still takes less time than having a full face of makeup and looking like you maybe just got out of the nightclub at 9 a.m.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: And no, that isn't a look that works for most of us.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: And I think that, you know, with our lip tints, I really, you know, I really am just grateful, even just on a personal level, to have them because it does make my life easier, you know.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: Well, I I it gives me just a little boost of comp like a boost of confidence.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: And I just I can always have it with me.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: And it's kind of also my backup if I feel like I'm about to go someplace and I need to look put together.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: I'll um I'll take actually one of them.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: And sometimes what I'll do is I'll it'll be multi-purpose.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: I'll put some on my lips, put a little bit on my cheeks, a little bit on my eyelids, and now I'm good to go.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: And so I think that that type of, I guess the more on the go or more natural type of beauty aesthetic is very popular in a lot of different places.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: And I think it is like I know the latest trend is, you know, there's like a trend lately that is about more of the natural look.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: And some of the people like, you know, like Kylie Jenner are trying to look a little bit more pared down.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: But trend or not, that's actually how most of us look from day to day.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: You know, the celebrities, I know they dictate social media a lot of times and what is trending in, you know, in the media, but us normal people, that is just our everyday look, is to just have a slight enhancement of our natural appearance.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: And that's what that's what we have time for as well.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: Because we have professional makeup artists doing our makeup for an hour.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we don't have a glam squad.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: Like, I wish I had a glam squad, but I don't, you know, it's it's kind of ridiculous.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: And you know, what one thing I wanted to also say, since we're on the topic of lips, like, you know, not like I'm I'm not trying to like harp on this, but like genuinely, like, I kid you not, I remember being younger and thinking, like, why do my lips have more lines than what I'm seeing in magazines?
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: And like on these, like, you know what I mean?
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: Like the big billboards and stuff.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: And I realized I was like, oh wait, that's Photoshop.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: And nowadays it's lip filler.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: Nowadays it's aesthetics, you know, it's like we are like we need to stop projecting.
- 46:15SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like as a society, we need to stop projecting this idea that, like, you know, if someone, if someone's on social media, if someone's on TV, like that's how we're supposed to look.
- 46:27SPEAKER_00: Like, that's not true.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: Like, you're it's like we keep preaching like every day.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: I could you know it's almost like an oxymoron because I get online or I watch TV and I see somebody talking about be yourself, be your natural self.
- 46:40SPEAKER_00: And that's okay, cool.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: Like you're telling people that, but are you actually putting that message out there?
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: And this is my question to all of the huge conglomerates out there, you know what I mean, and these big marketing houses.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: Like, are you really pushing that message?
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: Because at the end of the day, all I'm seeing is a bunch of girls with a lot of filler in their lips.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Like, that's really what I'm seeing.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: And then when they dissolve it, yeah, very commonly.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: It's not, and it's not just filler, it's like I mean, some of them have spent tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, you know, to give themselves essentially a new face.
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I think it's it's like to each their own.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to judge someone who gets some filler or gets some work done if that is what makes you feel good.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: I, we are not the same person.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know your backstory.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: I don't know what brings you joy.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: So I'm not going to fully judge someone on that.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: But also I think to, yeah, I think it's with all the trends and everything that people see online, it makes it particularly hard for women and especially young women growing up because they, yeah, they see that they they themselves have lip lines or hey, I have some lines on my forehead.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's okay.
- 47:45SPEAKER_01: That's okay.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: And you, you know, I think it's it's important for people to just see all types of people, all types of women.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: You can age gracefully, and if you and you choose to get some things done, that's also okay.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm choosing to age gracefully, but I'm not, you know, when to age gracefully is age naturally, but I'm not saying that you can't age gracefully and get some work done.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: But a lot of times when these people are pushing these messages, they are disingenuous because sometimes they say, oh, you know, look natural, and then they show their face that's worth six figures, right?
- 48:19SPEAKER_01: That they spent wrong.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: Or or or they will condemn someone for getting for let's say getting a tiny bit of work done or using a small little face filter.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: And once again, the reason I say I'm trying not to judge is maybe sometimes also not everybody can afford those things.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: Maybe someone does want to use a very mild filter on their face because it makes they're having maybe they're having a bad day, or maybe their their skin is breaking out and they're not that confident right now.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: I think we just need to be a little bit gentler with people in general because there is no one size fits all.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: And I just think that like a lot of these, you know, yeah, bigger talking heads, they are always very, very not always, but a lot of times very self-righteous in whatever message they're pushing, whether I agree with it or not.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: And like I said, I just think it's it's a lot more nuanced than that.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: I think, yeah, I think like I said, I think it is great in general that the latest quote unquote trend, um, one of them is going for a slightly more natural pared downlook.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: But I also think it's important for people to realize that some of these celebrities or influencers are pushing it.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: They're not that natural.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: So if you feel bad because you don't wake up in the morning, no makeup looking like them, you also maybe didn't spend, like I said, the tens of thousands of dollars that some of them did to have their hashtag no makeup face that they're you know.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: It's just exactly it's it's just we have to take everything with a grain of salt.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I think it's it's just important to remember that we all are so different, you know, in our appearance and who we are.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: And I think that, you know, I I I think it's it can be a little bit challenging sometime, you know, with social media, with a lot of things.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: I think it can be a really challenging.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: I think all of us are susceptible, like susceptible to it at times, myself included, where you know, you you start to feel lesser than or you feel like, oh, you know, why can't I look this way or why can't I do this?
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: But things are oftentimes just they're never they're never as they seem, right?
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: You just really don't know, you know, like you just really don't know what's really going on when someone big or influential is pushing something, and it's just it's just good to kind of remember that and not get too caught up in it.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I completely 100% agree with you.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: I think you made such great points.
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: And you know, I I also want to say that one of my biggest pet peeves, like you remember when people started doing those like marketing campaigns where they were like like the lipstick was like between their teeth and their lips just looked like they were just, I don't even know, like from an actual Photoshop like cutout or something.
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: Like it just like that stuff, like it really irked me because I I feel like it's not about it's not about judging.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: It's not about I I I don't judge anybody, you know, at all.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: I can't.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: I'm in the medical profession.
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: We have literally like it's in our ethics, you know what I mean, to not do it.
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: But at the same time, I do see a lot of young girls that have they're struggling.
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: I should put it like that.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: They're struggling, they're struggling to find out what their look is, who they are, how do they want to be perceived.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: And I cannot help but wonder if we just got rid of all this garbage out there that's not even real and it's not a real anatomical representation of what your like skin or your lips should look like, if they would feel a little bit more comfortable in their day-to-day life.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: Like at the end of the day, you're not going to have poreless skin.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: You're not going to have lineless, you know, lips.
- 51:54SPEAKER_00: Like you're just, it's not gonna be a reality.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: And if it is something that you are striving so hard for, you're gonna end up hurting yourself.
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: And that's that's a genuine like medical truth.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: It's just a fact.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: And so for me, when I look at this conversation and I look at this problem as a consumer, my eyes go towards brands because I say, Well, why aren't brands taking on responsibility to create naturally like like in the sense of like products that make you feel more naturally beautiful, you know?
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: If it's like if it's a lip balm, if it's a lipstick or a lipstick, you should feel like it's still your lips.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: You've just enhanced them a little bit with color.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: You shouldn't feel like, you know what I mean?
- 52:38SPEAKER_00: Like, there shouldn't be people out here selling like lip plumpers that have ridiculous amounts of like, I don't know, like pepper extract and stuff.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: Like that's not gonna do anything.
- 52:48SPEAKER_00: That's gonna probably cause actual harm, you know, to the person.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: And that's where I get very irritated because at the end of the day, there is a responsibility, and it doesn't always fall on, you know, we we love talking about social media, you know, as a society, but what is social media being fueled by?
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: It's being fueled by these giant brands that take zero responsibility for what they're pushing out into the market.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: They don't, you know what I mean?
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: They don't educate their consumers, they're just pushing products out.
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: And of course, when people see a marketing campaign with a girl who's got like duck lips, they're gonna be like, I want lips like that, I want to feel like that, or the lips that are drenching, they almost look like they're, you know, they have like glaze on them or something.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm sure you've seen them, like those kind of ad campaigns.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: That's not reality.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: Like you're not gonna go out into the world and like see that.
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: That's not, you know, and that's what really hurts me to see because young women are very impressionable.
- 53:44SPEAKER_00: And it's there has to be a responsibility put on brands that listen, whatever you're making, please like keep these things in mind.
- 53:51SPEAKER_00: Like keep in mind that you are impacting a generation and that you are, you know, making people feel a certain way so that they make certain purchasing decisions.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: And that can, you know, the beauty industry is huge.
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: It's a huge place, and there's room for everybody here.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, the responsibility does have to fall on the shoulders of the right people.
- 54:09SPEAKER_00: And I just, I don't know, you know, I I have it, I have a hard time swallowing this pill of, well, you know, we're just gonna make products and whoever wants to buy them can buy them.
- 54:20SPEAKER_00: Like, that's not really the whole story, you know, because when you have million, like multi-million dollar ad campaigns and multi-million dollar budget marketing budgets, and you're pushing all this out there, that's I mean, come on, guys.
- 54:33SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Like, who's who's the one that's making up these norms?
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: That's my question.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: So it makes me gravitate more towards brands like yours, anyways, because at least I know what I see is what I'm getting.
- 54:44SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: There's nothing on your website that I can look at and say, that's false advertising.
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: That's huge to me as a consumer that you've actually put in the time and the effort and the care to not false advertise, you know, and to not give people this like false idea of what they can should or whatever look like, you know?
- 55:03SPEAKER_00: It's it's just good quality products made from genuine, like a good place, and they're really, really effective.
- 55:10SPEAKER_00: That's the number the bottom line, you know, they're effective products.
- 55:14SPEAKER_00: And I think there's could be a lot learned from from that approach, you know?
- 55:18SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm trying to say.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you for that.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think and I I feel like I'm a lot more, I will say a lot more conscious about this, even more so now that I have my, you know, I have a daughter, she's 18 months old.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: Of course, she's very young at this time, but yeah, I I think about just the effect that a lot of this has, and in particular, of course, on women, because whether it's you know, a large brand or whether it's a big influence or a celebrity, they really do kind of, you know, set the direction of what is going to be hot or what's gonna be, you know, in, or I'm probably using the wrong words.
- 55:54SPEAKER_01: I'm maybe a little bit too old for set, whatever.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: Whatever the words that they're using now that's you know, whatever is trending or whatever is cool.
- 56:04SPEAKER_01: But um it can change so quickly.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: And so these beauty standards, I think it's gotta be it's so daunting for girls and young women in particular at this time, because maybe you actually start to think that, hey, I I could actually achieve this look, like whatever's trending at this moment.
- 56:20SPEAKER_01: Uh oh, actually it fits me.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: I could do it.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: And then a few months later, oh, that look is out, and now your what how you naturally look is not not no longer um, you know, up to par with what the new beauty standard is.
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it is a money-making machine because it's all about trends, right?
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: And what when it comes to changing what's considered, you know, what's considered more sexy, what's considered more appealing, um, you know, this quarter as opposed to next quarter, it makes it very difficult for everyone to achieve that.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: And it's not, and that's the purpose.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: You're always chasing this unattainable goal to look a certain way.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: And then, like I said, if you finally, if and when, and for most of us, it'll never happen, if and when you maybe think that you're on in the right direction because, oh, look, this person looks a little bit like me.
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, a few months later, nope, not the case anymore.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: And now you're back at square one feeling, you know, worse about yourself.
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: And it's yeah, I think it's it is a bit of a vicious cycle, but it's a great money-making scheme, it is, because you're constantly selling a version of a person that doesn't exist, including the one marketing it that if that they they don't, they're not it either.
- 57:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 57:38SPEAKER_00: They don't look anything like it.
- 57:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's probably why they're they're picking models that are not even models, that's probably why they're making it.
- 57:46SPEAKER_00: Because honestly, no human being that looks in the mirror is gonna see half the stuff that you see out here in marketing.
- 57:52SPEAKER_00: You're just not gonna see it, you know.
- 57:54SPEAKER_00: It's it's not like I said, it's anatomical misrepresentation of you know what beauty really is.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: And I think that that's there's a lot that can be, I think there's a lot that we can understand from marketing.
- 58:05SPEAKER_00: I I almost see it as like a learning curve now, you know, as a consumer, when I look at all these campaigns and these ad ads and whatever, I'm like, hmm, okay, that's what I don't want to go for.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: You know, that's not what I want to do.
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: And so it almost for me personally, I mean, maybe it's because, you know, I'm in my 30s now and I I I look at things differently, but it makes me realize, wow, you know, I I can't imagine being a 17, 18-year-old girl and seeing this and just feeling like crap about myself, you know, because I don't look like Sally here on the cover of whatever this is, you know, because she's got Photoshop and she's got the injections and she's like, it just, I don't know, it really baffles my mind.
- 58:47SPEAKER_00: And I I am a huge believer that if you're going to invest in anything, um, whether it's beauty or anything for yourself, you really do have to vote for the brands that are doing things from a perspective of like just reality.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, to to put it bluntly, reality, you know, like that you really do have to vote for that because that's where we all live.
- 59:10SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I really encourage our listeners, especially when you're shopping products, go for quality, you know, because that quality is going to make you understand what a good product means and it's gonna set a bar of expectation for you personally, so that everything that you purchase after that is going to be meaningful, it's going to resonate with you.
- 59:29SPEAKER_00: You're gonna feel like you actually invested your money rather than threw it away.

- 59:45SPEAKER_00: They're really, really nice, very nourishing, like really nice, like for real.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: Like the quality is amazing.
