Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And I want to tell you about someone else's having
- 0:02Speaker 1: a birthday. On the twenty ninth for June, I will
- 0:05Speaker 1: be having a birthday and I will be seventy five. Now,
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm not going to make any excuses. I'm going to
- 0:12Speaker 1: put my hand up and own up to my age.
- 0:15Speaker 1: And I just want to read out something that I
- 0:17Speaker 1: have posted on Facebook and that it's getting a great response.
- 0:22Speaker 2: So listen to this.
- 0:23Speaker 1: On Monday, the twenty ninth of June, I will be
- 0:25Speaker 1: reaching a milestone in my life, my seventy fifth birthday.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So I thought, what can I do? How about raising
- 0:32Speaker 1: money for prostate cancer?
- 0:34Speaker 2: Now?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I thought, I've done my bit for Cancer Research UK
- 0:37Speaker 1: and breast cancer now, and so I decided to promote
- 0:41Speaker 1: prostate cancer.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I'm not climbing Everest, running an ultramarathon, jumping out of
- 0:47Speaker 1: a plane or anything like that. I'm just having a
- 0:49Speaker 1: milestone birthday. Then I thought, do you know what. Over
- 0:52Speaker 1: the last twenty five years, I've promoted Race for Life
- 0:55Speaker 1: on stage. I've promoted loads of charities and interviewedundreds of
- 1:00Speaker 1: fundraising gifts on this very radio focused in sports show.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I've been a quiz master an endless amount of quizes
- 1:06Speaker 1: for charity, all for other people, so I thought it's
- 1:09Speaker 1: my turn to do some fundraising for a good cause.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I've also compared hundreds of road races for running clubs
- 1:16Speaker 1: promoting their causes. If you've ever been to one of
- 1:19Speaker 1: those and one of those people that I've helped or
- 1:22Speaker 1: called in at a race, then all I'm asking for
- 1:24Speaker 1: is a small donation as a birthday present, and it
- 1:27Speaker 1: will go straight to the prostate Cancer charity. One in
- 1:31Speaker 1: eight men will get prostate cancer, and all to offer
- 1:34Speaker 1: men find out by complete chance too late. So denote
- 1:38Speaker 1: today to help fund the research that will improve the
- 1:41Speaker 1: odds of catching prostate cancer earlier. Because men's lives shouldn't
- 1:44Speaker 1: be left to chance. So I mean, this is what
- 1:48Speaker 1: I've posted on Facebook, and it just says thanks for
- 1:52Speaker 1: reading this together. Lots of small donations can make one
- 1:55Speaker 1: big donation, Kevin Daily that's me. Yes, I'll be seven
- 2:00Speaker 1: on Monday. Now I might just add that I haven't
- 2:05Speaker 1: got prostate cancer myself. People have been asking that, but no,
- 2:08Speaker 1: but I have lost a couple of friends who did
- 2:10Speaker 1: have this terrible illness.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So yeah, I just thought, oh, I've seen it before.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I decided to start this just giving page and set
- 2:18Speaker 1: myself a target of five hundred pounds, and so far
- 2:21Speaker 1: I've received nearly four hundred pounds. Now, the point that
- 2:24Speaker 1: I made is that lots of little donations make one
- 2:27Speaker 1: big donation, and I want to thank all those that
- 2:30Speaker 1: have donated so far. But I too, I do want
- 2:33Speaker 1: to tell you about one donation that appeared on my
- 2:35Speaker 1: page for a one hundred pound I looked at the
- 2:40Speaker 1: name Gary Parker. I thought I don't know anybody called
- 2:43Speaker 1: Gary Parker, so I tracked him down, a complete stranger
- 2:47Speaker 1: on Facebook, and sent him a massive thank you. Now,
- 2:50Speaker 1: Gary told me he was a keen cyclist and himself
- 2:53Speaker 1: and some of his fellow Spurs supporters have raised over
- 2:56Speaker 1: three hundred and thirty thousand pound for pancreat It Can
- 3:00Speaker 1: to UK on a ride that they make every year
- 3:03Speaker 1: called the Grand Departs Amsterdam. Now look at the garage's
- 3:06Speaker 1: Facebook page. Is also taking part in various fundraising events,
- 3:10Speaker 1: including a twenty kilometer walk.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So I just want to share this story.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And if you remember, I read out a story for
- 3:18Speaker 1: Gemma Jemmy Niles, who was raising charity at Money for Charity,
- 3:23Speaker 1: you know, for her daughter and She found it very
- 3:25Speaker 1: humbling to find that total strangers were donating to her
- 3:30Speaker 1: charity as well. So it does you know, it makes
- 3:33Speaker 1: you feel that there are some lovely, lovely people out there.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's just a great thing that these people do, just
- 3:41Speaker 1: off their own back, complete strangers.
- 3:44Speaker 2: It's brilliant. I'm lost for words. Anyway, there you go.
- 3:47Speaker 2: If you want to click.
- 3:48Speaker 1: On my Facebook page and track the links down, you
- 3:50Speaker 1: see a picture of me and my just Giving page,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and that will wish.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Me a very very happy birthday. Thank you very much.
