Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Iran war - 100 US soldiers injured in past 14 days, Pentagon says
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Pentagon says nearly one hundred US service members have
- 0:03Speaker 1: suffered injuries, though mostly minor, in the last fourteen days.
- 0:06Speaker 1: That's despite President Trump insisting that Iran's military has been destroyed.
- 0:11Speaker 1: New CNN reporting finds the Pentagon has been slow to
- 0:14Speaker 1: disclose injuries official site security needs for those delays. A
- 0:19Speaker 1: Trump administration official says a dignified transfer will take place
- 0:23Speaker 1: for four fallen service members tomorrow. Two have been identified.
- 0:27Speaker 1: First Lieutenant Tyler Freehan and Private Isabella Gonzales were killed
- 0:30Speaker 1: by an attack in Jordan on Friday. A third service
- 0:33Speaker 1: member was killed in Iraq on Saturday, and remains have
- 0:37Speaker 1: been recovered in the search for a fourth soldier missing
- 0:40Speaker 1: in Jordan. Now, President Trump has warned that Iran will
- 0:42Speaker 1: quote pay many times over every time it kills a
- 0:47Speaker 1: US service member. Let's get right to see as Bessie
- 0:50Speaker 1: Klein live at the White House with all the latest
- 0:52Speaker 1: developments this morning, Bessie, what are you learning.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Well, John?
- 0:56Speaker 3: This has been multiple days of escalation for this conflict.
- 1:00Speaker 2: In a particularly.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Violent moment in this war, we have learned that the
- 1:05Speaker 3: Pentagon has really been slow to report injuries, as you mentioned,
- 1:09Speaker 3: But Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announcing in a statement that
- 1:13Speaker 3: nearly one hundred US service members have been injured since
- 1:18Speaker 3: this conflict began to re escalate, and that ceasefell fire
- 1:21Speaker 3: fell apart back on July seventh. Now, Parnell says that
- 1:25Speaker 3: most of those injuries have been minor concussions. But of
- 1:29Speaker 3: course this comes after three US service members were killed
- 1:32Speaker 3: over the weekend, and we have learned that the US
- 1:35Speaker 3: has located remains of an unidentified person after one US
- 1:40Speaker 3: service member. Another US service member was reported missing in action. Now,
- 1:45Speaker 3: US Central Command has announced a tenth consecutive night of
- 1:48Speaker 3: strikes against Iran, this time, they say, again aimed at
- 1:52Speaker 3: degrading Iran's capability of attacking those ships in the Strait
- 1:56Speaker 3: of Hormuz, that critical oil thoroughfare. Now, this as mediators
- 2:01Speaker 3: between the US and Iran are floating the possibility of
- 2:04Speaker 3: a ten day ceasefire and effort really here to get
- 2:07Speaker 3: diplomacy back on track. Now, this proposal would include lifting
- 2:11Speaker 3: restrictions in the Strait of Horror moves, and that comes
- 2:14Speaker 3: as the US has imposed this naval blockade on ships
- 2:17Speaker 3: traveling to and from Iranian ports. In Iran as I mentioned,
- 2:20Speaker 3: has been firing on commercial shipping vessels in recent days. Now,
- 2:24Speaker 3: as we think about where the administration's.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Ahead is at, the US official.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Telling CNN in a statement quote right now, President Trump
- 2:32Speaker 3: is focused on making Iran pay for their violations of
- 2:36Speaker 3: the Memorandum of Understanding and their continued acts of terrorism
- 2:39Speaker 3: in the Strait of horror moves. In addition, the President
- 2:42Speaker 3: will make Iran pay for the recent.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Deaths of US soldiers.
- 2:46Speaker 3: That official goes on to say that diplomatic talks are
- 2:50Speaker 3: continuing here, but in terms of next steps, it is
- 2:53Speaker 3: possible that the Trump administration chooses to pursue this.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Diplomatic off ramp here.
- 2:57Speaker 3: It is also possible the President has threatened to target
- 3:00Speaker 3: Iran's critical infrastructure. That it could include bridges as well
- 3:04Speaker 3: as carg Island, a key oil hub that would almost
- 3:07Speaker 3: certainly require boots on the ground.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Now.
- 3:10Speaker 2: President Trump is very angry.
- 3:12Speaker 3: He's made that clear in a series of posts to
- 3:14Speaker 3: social media that says Iran killing US service members will
- 3:19Speaker 3: have to pay quote many times over. He's set to
- 3:22Speaker 3: meet with the President of Lebanon, a key ally in
- 3:24Speaker 3: the region, later today and tomorrow will pay his respects
- 3:28Speaker 3: at Dover for that dignified transfer.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Congressman, the cost of this war has been profound, and
- 3:36Speaker 4: in so many ways.
- 3:38Speaker 2: You know, we understand in just the first few.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Days of the war all of the THAD missile defenses
- 3:43Speaker 4: in the region were taken out except for maybe one,
- 3:46Speaker 4: and there's a lot more where that came from. So
- 3:49Speaker 4: there's that, and then there is the human costs, which
- 3:53Speaker 4: I find just so stunning for the American public at
- 3:56Speaker 4: this point in this war to understand that one hundred
- 4:00Speaker 4: American troops have been wounded in just the past two weeks.
- 4:03Speaker 4: This is in just the past two weeks, and we
- 4:06Speaker 4: were perhaps only finding out about it because reporters have
- 4:09Speaker 4: been pushing and trying.
- 4:10Speaker 2: To get to the to the truth.
- 4:12Speaker 4: So what do you know the full extent of American injuries?
- 4:18Speaker 4: And do you know the full extent of equipment losses?
- 4:22Speaker 4: When I mentioned fact, we don't.
- 4:24Speaker 2: We don't.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Look, we don't because the Pentagon has not been transparent
- 4:28Speaker 5: about that. You know, I get reports from people who
- 4:31Speaker 5: they know a service member at a base in Jordan
- 4:34Speaker 5: or Iraq or someone say yeah, we heard there was
- 4:36Speaker 5: an attack. There's twenty or thirty people wounded, Pentagon done
- 4:39Speaker 5: say anything about it. We dig into it, as the
- 4:42Speaker 5: New York Times has you, and you then find out, Look,
- 4:45Speaker 5: this is again no transparency. As he said, no pres com,
- 4:48Speaker 5: no conversation about this. We have a dictator running this country.
- 4:52Speaker 5: We have never had a situation where we've been at
- 4:55Speaker 5: war and the president has treated it as his own
- 4:58Speaker 5: war where he doesn't have to share him for with
- 5:00Speaker 5: the American people or with the Congress. I mean, this
- 5:03Speaker 5: is a frightening situation. And yeah, they have not been
- 5:06Speaker 5: telling us what's been happening in terms of lost equipment,
- 5:09Speaker 5: terms of the cost of the war, and certainly in
- 5:11Speaker 5: terms of the service members who have been wounded.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Can I just say something that I think is I
- 5:14Speaker 4: guess it's painfully obvious, but I feel like I have
- 5:17Speaker 4: to say, at Congressman, you are the top Democrat on
- 5:19Speaker 4: the Armed Services Committee.
- 5:21Speaker 2: It would seem to me.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Definitional that if anybody knew the extent of losses of
- 5:26Speaker 4: things like the entire missile defense system for the United
- 5:28Speaker 4: States bases and countries that we support in the region,
- 5:31Speaker 4: and American troops being injured, that your source wouldn't be
- 5:34Speaker 4: somebody calling who has a.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Friend who serves on a base. But you're telling me
- 5:38Speaker 2: it is, yeah, well and not.
- 5:40Speaker 6: And we're digging.
- 5:41Speaker 5: My staff is costing in contact with as many people
- 5:43Speaker 5: as we can, depending on you know, they are just
- 5:46Speaker 5: not being transparent. We have to sort of pull it
- 5:48Speaker 5: out of them or find it at one place or another.
- 5:51Speaker 5: So look, I mean the lack of transparency certainly is concerning,
- 5:54Speaker 5: But the bigger concern we're in a war that we
- 5:57Speaker 5: have no idea how to get out of, and the
- 5:59Speaker 5: costs are mounting. The service member's deaths are unbelievably tragic.
- 6:03Speaker 5: They continue to be at risk the financial costs but
- 6:06Speaker 5: also just the international economic costs. And now we've got
- 6:10Speaker 5: the HOUTHI say, they're going to shut down the bob
- 6:12Speaker 5: All Mendob straight.
- 6:14Speaker 6: Which is only going to add to these pobs.
- 6:16Speaker 5: We need to negotiate a settlement.
- 6:17Speaker 6: And in this conflict, why.
- 6:19Speaker 7: Do you think the administration has waited fourteen days to
- 6:23Speaker 7: tell the American public.
- 6:26Speaker 8: Because they're trying to. Donald Trump does not want to
- 6:29Speaker 8: stand in front of the American people and make the
- 6:30Speaker 8: case for this war. He never thought he'd have to.
- 6:33Speaker 8: I mean, look, it's one thing to say we're into
- 6:36Speaker 8: this thing, for five months now. The most egregious part
- 6:40Speaker 8: of that, besides the launching of the war without a plan,
- 6:42Speaker 8: is the fact that there was no effort to prepare
- 6:45Speaker 8: the American people, and so Donald Trump, instead of actually
- 6:49Speaker 8: doing the hard work of preparing the American people talking
- 6:52Speaker 8: about what the goal is here, has instead tried to
- 6:55Speaker 8: convince everybody every week that the war is over. And
- 6:59Speaker 8: it's part of why why are you hiding the injuries?
- 7:02Speaker 8: Because it's not something he wants to talk about. This
- 7:04Speaker 8: is it's not unprecedented in American history in terms of
- 7:08Speaker 8: this level of hiding these things, but it's disgusting. And
- 7:12Speaker 8: by the way, Russia and China potentially are providing this
- 7:15Speaker 8: targeting data and we're not hearing anything about that. In
- 7:18Speaker 8: fat cash Hotel's go into Russia now in October.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I want to hear more about that.
- 7:22Speaker 7: General the Pentagon previously told CNN and that reporting delays
- 7:26Speaker 7: they're necessary to protect troops across them in the least,
- 7:29Speaker 7: and even top lawmakers have said that they're in the dark.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Listen, they have.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Not been telling us what's been happening in terms of
- 7:37Speaker 5: lost equipment, terms of the cost of the war, and
- 7:39Speaker 5: certainly in terms of the service members who have been wounded.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Is that tendored protocol.
- 7:46Speaker 9: It is something where obviously there's a little bit of
- 7:48Speaker 9: a delay to be able to properly notify families of
- 7:51Speaker 9: any kind of injuries or deaths. So that part is
- 7:55Speaker 9: actually normal. However, we need to step back a second.
- 7:57Speaker 9: As the previous congressman said that what.
- 8:00Speaker 6: Are the objectives? What is it we're doing here?
- 8:03Speaker 9: The President would like nothing more than the return to
- 8:06Speaker 9: a pre war condition and declare success and get out
- 8:09Speaker 9: of here. The problem is we don't have that clarity,
- 8:12Speaker 9: and it's very disturbing whenever the President in his own
- 8:15Speaker 9: tweets says words like hey, we're going to kill more
- 8:18Speaker 9: of you if you kill any of ours. That is
- 8:20Speaker 9: reminiscent of September sixteenth, nineteen forty one, where the Nazis
- 8:24Speaker 9: said we will kill one hundred for every one German
- 8:27Speaker 9: soldier killed. This is we don't fight for vengeance. We
- 8:31Speaker 9: fight for honor and for the national security objectives.
- 8:35Speaker 6: We don't even know what they are anymore.
- 8:37Speaker 9: And that's very very sad, very dangerous, and we are
- 8:40Speaker 9: in a quagmire.
- 8:41Speaker 7: As you said earlier, Jeff, I want to bring you
- 8:44Speaker 7: in because we're still telling CNN that mediators are pushing
- 8:47Speaker 7: hard for a ten day ceasefire. And frankly, we've heard
- 8:50Speaker 7: the ceasefire discussions many times before and wondered whether they
- 8:53Speaker 7: were going to last.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Is it an effect? Is it totally gone?
- 8:57Speaker 7: The US sorry downplaying though any real chance actually is
- 9:00Speaker 7: going to have the president agree to this idea. What
- 9:03Speaker 7: has changed from the last discussion point about ceasefires till now.
- 9:08Speaker 10: Well, what has changed is that both sides are attacking
- 9:10Speaker 10: each other and that's that's changed everything. That's of course
- 9:13Speaker 10: why the ceasefire was thrown out and why the memorandum
- 9:16Speaker 10: of understanding was thrown out. And the President is not suggesting,
- 9:20Speaker 10: at least in his public comments, that he's ready to
- 9:23Speaker 10: move back to that. He has said a couple times
- 9:26Speaker 10: and around wants a deal, But that's kind of a
- 9:28Speaker 10: it's almost a verbal tick for the president. He constantly
- 9:31Speaker 10: says that, even when there's no real evidence or at
- 9:34Speaker 10: least no detail about that coming from from the other side.
- 9:37Speaker 10: So right now it's conflict. But even Iran has acknowledged
- 9:42Speaker 10: that there were that there was some outreach from potential mediators.
- 9:46Speaker 10: We assume that's Pakistan and the guitar took me a
- 9:51Speaker 10: second there. Sorry, okay, but you know they have an
- 9:55Speaker 10: interest in seeing this end too. The region is really
- 9:58Speaker 10: being affected by this right now. The whole world has
- 10:00Speaker 10: been effective by this, and the President will be two
- 10:04Speaker 10: and will face additional political consequences this fall if this
- 10:07Speaker 10: war continues.
- 10:08Speaker 7: General Iran was able to successfully hit a US air base.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Not just once, but twice within a two day span.
- 10:15Speaker 7: Do you think that Iran's firepower is more intact than
- 10:18Speaker 7: the Pentagon's willing to admit.
- 10:19Speaker 6: Here, absolutely yes.
- 10:23Speaker 9: The President continues his propaganda that he has destroyed the
- 10:27Speaker 9: Iranian military. That is far from the truth. They are
- 10:30Speaker 9: able to hit. In all of the media, we see
- 10:34Speaker 9: one crater, one target destroyed per missile. They are not
- 10:40Speaker 9: bombarding the middle of nowhere. They have extremely good targeting data.
- 10:45Speaker 9: They are able to hit their targets. In the US,
- 10:47Speaker 9: While of course we can defend many of the drones
- 10:50Speaker 9: and missiles, it is virtually impossible to secure every area,
- 10:55Speaker 9: and our soldiers and military members are paying the price
- 10:58Speaker 9: that we are not learning these lessons like the Ukrainians.
- 11:01Speaker 6: Have so well.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Congressman Tomorrow, Secretary Pete Hegseth and joined as the staff
- 11:07Speaker 7: General Dan Kane. They're going to head the capital. They're
- 11:09Speaker 7: going to ask for at least eighty billion.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Dollars for this war.
- 11:13Speaker 7: Several Republicans are not convinced yet. Do you expect pushback though.
- 11:19Speaker 6: Oh yeah, there's going to be. Look, they'll be a
- 11:21Speaker 6: huge pushback.
- 11:21Speaker 8: And again, the administration needs to make the case. The
- 11:25Speaker 8: American people are willing to go to war. We've seen
- 11:27Speaker 8: this through our history. If a case is made for why,
- 11:30Speaker 8: and even if they can't go back in time and
- 11:33Speaker 8: make the case for the initial strikes now to discuss. Look, hey, guys, honestly,
- 11:37Speaker 8: we have two options. We either leave the straight offour
- 11:39Speaker 8: moves to Iran that's untenable, or we have to escape.
- 11:43Speaker 8: There's no good option here, but that is the case
- 11:46Speaker 8: that has to be made. And I have heard too many, though, Laura,
- 11:49Speaker 8: too many Republicans and even occasionally a Democrat out there saying, boy,
- 11:53Speaker 8: this has been so successful. We've destroyed their navy, we've
- 11:57Speaker 8: destroyed their air force. Okay, they had F fourteen Tomkins
- 12:00Speaker 8: made me sad to blow those up, by the way,
- 12:02Speaker 8: but that the air force was no threat to us.
- 12:05Speaker 8: The Navy clearly doesn't need to be the threat because
- 12:08Speaker 8: drones and ballistic missiles are. We've been told over and
- 12:11Speaker 8: over that their ballistic missiles threat was degraded by eight
- 12:15Speaker 8: ninety percent. Then we read in great publications like jeffs
- 12:18Speaker 8: that in fact, that's not the case. They've only degraded
- 12:21Speaker 8: about twenty percent. Tell the American people the truth. They're
- 12:24Speaker 8: willing to make sacrifices if you tell them the truth.
- 12:27Speaker 8: But this continued line is going to catch up, is
- 12:30Speaker 8: catching up, and that's why nobody believes anything that these
- 12:33Speaker 8: people say.
