- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. Today's episode is about NASA
- 0:18and SpaceX and the Artemis 3 mission.
- 0:21Now the Government Accountability Office.
- 0:23The GAO has released a report indicating that NASA's highly
- 0:26anticipated Artemis 3 moon landing, originally scheduled
- 0:30for late 2025, is likely to be postponed until at least 2027.
- 0:36This delay is attributed to slower than expected progress in
- 0:40the development of both the human landing system, the
- 0:42Starship, and new lunar space suits by Axiom Space.
- 0:47The report, released on November 30th, provides A comprehensive
- 0:50analysis of the challenges and the setbacks that have impacted
- 0:53the Artemis program cornerstone of NASA's efforts to return
- 0:57humans to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.
- 1:03Now, the GAO's findings highlight several critical
- 1:06issues with the HLS development under SpaceX.
- 1:09The report notes that the project has encountered various
- 1:11challenges, including a condensed timeline, delayed
- 1:15development milestones, and extensive technical work still
- 1:18required. The report suggests that the
- 1:20pace of progress on HLS is slower than expected, but more
- 1:24than half the allocated schedule will consume just to reach the
- 1:27preliminary design review phase. This lag contrasts with the
- 1:31average progression rate for major NASA projects, which
- 1:34typically complete the phase within 35% of their overall
- 1:38timelines. And a crucial aspect of Spacex's
- 1:41HLS program is the Starship lunar Lander.
- 1:44Despite the company's efforts, the GAO report points out that
- 1:48SpaceX has had to postpone several key events from 2023 to
- 1:532024, further compressing the already tight schedule.
- 1:57Technical bilestones yet to be achieved include the validation
- 2:00of Starship Super Heavies, Raptor engine performance, and
- 2:03demonstrating the ability to transfer cryogenic propellant in
- 2:07space. The latter is a prerequisite for
- 2:09the critical design review of the Starship Lander.
- 2:12NASA officials, while acknowledging these challenges,
- 2:15have not disclosed specific details regarding the revised
- 2:18schedule of HLS development submitted by SpaceX.
- 2:22Jimfrey, NASA's associate administrator for Exploration
- 2:25systems development, emphasized that the interconnectedness of
- 2:29the Landers development with other elements of the Artemis
- 2:32program during a meeting of the NASA Advisory Council's Human
- 2:35Exploration and Operations Committee.
- 2:38The GAO report also sheds light on the development of lunar
- 2:41space suits by Axiom Space. The report flags potential
- 2:45delays in this area, noting that Axiom is still in the early
- 2:47stages of suit development, with a preliminary design review
- 2:51scheduled for November. Challenges include redesigning
- 2:54parts of the suit to meet NASA's requirements for emergency life
- 2:58support capabilities in dealing with supply chain issues that
- 3:01could extend lead times for critical components.
- 3:04GAO's analysis underscores the ambitious nature of the Artemis
- 3:083 mission schedule. The HLS program aims to complete
- 3:12its development in 79 months, 13 months less than the average for
- 3:16NASA major projects. Now, this condensed timeline,
- 3:20combined with the complexity of human spaceflight, presents
- 3:23significant hurdles going forward.
- 3:25The report reveals that as of September of 2023, the HLS
- 3:29program had delayed 8 of 13 key events by at least six months,
- 3:33including critical tests that were postponed due to technical
- 3:36issues. And the challenges facing
- 3:38Spacex's development of the HLS include the need for advanced
- 3:42technical capabilities like in orbit, propellant, storage, and
- 3:45transfer. Similarly, Axiom's effort to
- 3:48develop modernized space suits based on NASA's design faces its
- 3:52own set of design and development challenges.
- 3:54In response to these challenges, NASA has implemented additional
- 3:57processes to ensure that space XS and Axiom spaces designs and
- 4:02systems meet mission requirements and maintain crew
- 4:05safety. This includes supplemental
- 4:07processes for System Validation and Insight clauses and
- 4:11contracts to maintain visibility into the contractor's
- 4:14development work. The GAO report is part of an
- 4:17ongoing assessment of NASA's Artemis program mandated by the
- 4:21House report provision. It aims to evaluate the progress
- 4:24in developing key systems for the Artemis 3 moon mission and
- 4:28to ensure that these systems will fulfill NASA's needs and
- 4:31uphold safety standards. This potential delay in the
- 4:34Artemis 3 mission represents a significant shift in NASA's
- 4:38timeline for returning humans to the Moon.
- 4:40The Artemis program, which is integral to maintaining US
- 4:43leadership and space exploration and preparing for future
- 4:46missions to Mars, now faces the challenge of overcoming these
- 4:49development hurdles to achieve its historic objectives.
