- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Hello, friends, and welcome to episode 32 of the Friends on Football Podcast.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: I'm one of your co-hosts, Brandon Johnson.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And joined with me as always is my main man, Mr.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Sean Boyle.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Sean, how are you feeling?
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Brandon, I am happy to be with you.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: I'm happy to talk about some football.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Basically, every result except one match, I think I'm excited to talk about.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: There's a lot to get into.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Transfers are flying.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: There's rumors flying even further.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: There's a lot to get into, and I'm excited to do it.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: How are you doing?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I'm doing well.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna ask you yet which result you're talking about, but I could take a guess.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: So could it could be any?
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: It could be any, but I I got my eye on on one.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: But Sean, no, I'm doing I'm doing well.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Excited to talk.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: It's been a good weekend of football, of course, minus that one game we're talking about.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: So let's just get into it.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Let's dive in.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Let's recap these games.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: We'll go over our rewards, give our uh helmet stickers as we called them last week, and yeah, just just chop it up.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So, Sean, let's start Friday.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Friday, first game of the weekend.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: We had Manchester City, Crystal Palace, 4-1 win for Manchester City.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Did you expect that?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Anything out of the ordinary there?
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: I alluded on the preview show that I was expecting Palace to maybe perform pretty well again, because I thought they performed well in match week one against Everton and kind of were unlucky with the result.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: We didn't get a good performance out of Crystal Palace.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: They were pretty awful throughout most of this match, and City were pretty good.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: I don't think City were in their final flow state form yet.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: They weren't certainly at their best, but they didn't need to be.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: And that kind of is the difference between good teams that are relatively settled and some of these teams that are still trying to figure some things out.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Crystal Palace do appear to have a lot to figure out.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: I think the main takeaway, what I'll remember this game for, Brandon, an exciting moment for us, is Xavier Gozo fans.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: This was his debut.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: He comes on, and I think that's important to talk about.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: But I think before we get to Gozo and just how he performed, we should just mention this was kind of the the stars coming out to shine for Manchester City.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: We had Erwin Holland arrive with the haircut, he opened his scoring account for the season, he scored twice, both good goals.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And then Ryan Cherkey once again proved to be the difference from Manchester City.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: This guy, he doesn't just score goals, he scores bangers basically exclusively.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: And some of the tricky little dribbling he does for his first goal is just stupid, and then he scores a second shortly after.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: I think it was a good win for City, and they're starting to put to bed some of those concerns I had over Enzo Moresca.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree with you, Sean.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: The stars did seem to come out for this one.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately for Crystal Palace, they were on the other side of the team.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: They were not they were against them and not with them this game.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And of course, we love to see Gozo, we love to see those minutes from him, but yeah, City came out to play.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Your guy, Turkey.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, different gravy, Sean.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: He is on his day.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: That guy is ridiculous.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And for listeners that follow the World Cup, maybe are asking, hey, where was he at the World Cup?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: He was there, he was on France.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: He could not get minutes because that's how good that French team is on paper.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Maybe he should have gotten some more minutes.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: We can we can debate that, Sean.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: But this guy is in ridiculous form right now, and he's I feel like he's only getting better.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: So a lot to watch out for.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Erling Hahn opens his account, like you said, Sean.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: It's I know you didn't have faith in Moresca, and maybe you still don't have faith, and that's totally fine and understandable.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: But when you got those two guys going, I mean, we could coach that team and win games.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that's kind of where I'm at, Brandon.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: It's like I want I don't want to take anything away from Moreska because I can't shit on him, and then he wins his first two matches and me continue to shit on him.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So I don't want to do that.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: But I also will say that they very much have a way better squad than Crystal Palace, too.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: They have a much, much better team.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: It would be shocking, frankly, if they lost that match.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And I just think it's early in the season and just having that continuity from Cherokee and Holland, who played together a bit more last season and grew familiar with each other.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: We saw Phil Foden start to re-emerge and reassert himself into the picture too.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: He's been good to start this season.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: He had two assists in this match, I believe.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: And I really think City's attack is so, so much fun to watch when they have it all clicking.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: And it's because of guys like Cherky and Foden.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: They're they're brilliant footballers on their day, and especially Cherky, you mentioned it.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: He's just an absolute delight.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: There's certain guys that you could turn on a game for and just watch that player and have a good time, and he just checks that box for me.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: He's absolutely brilliant.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I'll watch him anytime I have the ability to.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: I think good job from City.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I I would have liked to see them be a little bit better and more ruthless.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: They kind of did a good job of taking their chances in this game.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: I don't necessarily think they created as many chances as they normally would like to, but they took them when they needed to, got the job done 4-1 win, no complaints.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Switching it to Crystal Palace, though, the big news for us was Xavier Gozo, but I think it ties into the larger problems at Palace too.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: I was really unimpressed.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: There are two games with all of their attacking options.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Outside of Yaremy Pino, who is a bona fide baller.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: He's really good.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: He's a creative midfielder type, couldn't play out on the wing as well.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Outside of him, they've kind of shuffled the lineup a bit.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: They've tried Mateta, they've tried Strand Larson, Eddie Anketia gets some run.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: I said it last week.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: I think there's an opportunity for Xavier Gozo.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: If the coach is willing to give him the opportunity, I think there is space available because nobody has proven themselves on this front line.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's sad if you're a Palace fan, but exciting for us as American fans who don't necessarily really care about Palace as a team, but we care about our guy Gozo.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I am excited to see.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: I will I would love to see him get a start maybe in the next coming weeks.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, like you said, nothing is coming together on that front line for them.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: So it's like, why not give the kid a chance, let him let him get a run out, play 60 minutes, and if he's not doing well, fine, pull him after 60, but let him let him get his feet wet and and really truly get his, you know, make his mark on a game.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I completely agree.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: I think Gozo in his minutes, he came on in the 68th minute.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I thought he was fine.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: There was a couple sloppy touches, a bit of nerves, maybe.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: You could tell he wasn't exactly settled when he first came on.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: There was a couple moments where him and another Palace player were kind of hesitant over who should go for the ball.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: It was in between them and they both would run and stop, then continue running.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: It was one of those like herky jerky games.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Palace could never really get a flow or a feel for it.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: I think Gozo had one brilliant layoff where he received and quickly one touch flicked onto a runner.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Brilliant.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: That's the kind of talent he has.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: And that was one of the moments where he was on and he didn't have to think too much.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: He could kind of just react to a ball coming to him.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: And that's where you see his talent shine.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: I think he'll settle in and I expect better performances from him, like you said, when he gets that 60-minute run out from the start, as opposed to coming off the bench needing goals against maybe the best team in the league.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, not the best, not the best situation to get your debut, but hey, it happened and and we're proud of him.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: So we will definitely keep our eyes on that one, Sean.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: We'll keep keep our eyes on Gozo moving forward.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Switching to Saturday's matches, Sean, the first match, the 7:30 a.m.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: one.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: I know you're a you're an early guy, you like the early game.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, 2-2 draws.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Pretty good watching, Sean.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Pretty solid game.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Liverpool still still sputtering, still, it's not quite there yet.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: But a point away at Anfield, you can't be upset with that.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: No, I thought it was a good result for Forest, and they honestly they're gonna be a bit upset they didn't get all three points because they gave away that lead late.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: I think you're right when you say Liverpool or sputtering.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: I had a few notes from this game, and my main takeaway is what has happened to Alexander Isak?
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: He scores in this game, but I mean, Brandon, you're finishing that one off.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: That's a it's a tap-in that any striker scoring.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: I think he has been miserable.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: This is a guy who was absolutely brilliant at Newcastle, was really good at Ralph Sociodad before that.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: He has a lot of talent.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's just Liverpool, but he he was injured last season.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: He just hasn't clicked in the way that they would have hoped for such a large transfer fee that they paid.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: I think that's something to continue monitoring.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: They really need him to step up, especially while Ekatique is still out rehabbing that ACL.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: When he gets back, I'm not even sure that Isak has a starting place nailed on in this team, especially if some of the business that Liverpool are linked with doing ends up happening.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I think it'll be tough for Isak.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: I think he his play needs to improve.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Florian Verts is another one where they paid a lot of money for him last season, and you see in moments his quality.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: He had an assist for a Frimpong goal, which was ruled out for offside in this game.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: That was a good moment.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: He ended up with another assist.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: And I think Florian Verts is a great player, but it's just in this Liverpool setup, it hasn't worked for him yet.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: And that's been under Arnest Lot and through two games, admittedly, it's early, under Ariola as well.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: I think, like I said, I picked Liverpool to finish second.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: I think they'll continue to grow and get better.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: This is going to be a theme for me.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: I think how teams start this season is going to be much different than how teams finish.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: And I think maybe it's because of the World Cup, maybe it's due to some of this late transfer activity.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: The season felt like it snuck up on me this year, and it feels like it snuck up on some of these teams.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: I know they've had years' notice of when these games would begin.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: It feels like there's a few teams that are thinking these first two matches were still preseason.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: The club I support and you support might be another one of them.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: But I just think Liverpool, they need to improve.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: They know they need to improve, and they will get better.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: I just think Forrest, Forrest deserved at least a point out of that game.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: And that's concerning when it's Ariola's first game at at the home ground.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: You expect them to come out firing and they just didn't.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I'm glad you I'm glad you highlighted uh Forest feeling like they dropped two points rather than gaining one, because I I did feel that way a bit too.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I I did feel that they probably deserve to get three points.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: I liked your point about Esac and Vertz.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: It's it's just not there yet.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: But I I do wonder, and and maybe this is something that we need to look at more, Sean, is this transfer window and the business and your names getting linked to these five different teams, your agents calling you before games, after games.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Hey, do you want to do this?
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Do you want to do that?
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And how much that of an impact that plays on you?
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And also the guys that your squad wants to bring in.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: It's like, hey, do you not trust me?
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Can I not play?
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Are you you're bringing in these guys from outside and you're gonna pay all this money?
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And I'm here, I'm already here playing for you.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: And now you want to bring in these other guys.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: So I do wonder the impact of that as well.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Of course, the World Cup, and I think that's been pretty well documented.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: But the transfer window is something that happens twice a season every season.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: And it'd be interesting to see, and maybe we have to do our own little case study research here, when December and January come around and that window opens up to see if form starts to change with some of these guys.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: I knew I do know that's a little bit of a weird time because you do have the festive fixtures and two and three games in in a week.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: So definitely something I think we should keep our eye on.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And with the window closing Tuesday afternoon, obviously it's it's ending right for this period, but definitely something I think we should look at moving forward, Sean.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that's a good point.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: The just unsettled nature of the squad.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: And it's not just the guys that are coming in and need time to bed into a new structure or a new team in a new city, sometimes a new language.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: There's all of those components.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: It's also those guys that are in the squad and are being replaced in terms of their playing time or their minutes might be dwindling, or they know that the club are looking to sign a player in their position, and that affects them negatively, and maybe they start to have some self-doubt or confidence issues creep in, or maybe they want to move out of the club.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: There's just a lot of uncertainty at this time of the year until that Tuesday deadline passes.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: And then we only get certainty for a few months before it kicks back up again in January, which is not as active as a window usually.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: You know, it's usually kind of just an emergency buying window, but it's still a time of uncertainty for some.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: So I think the theme for me these first few weeks has been and will continue to be the settling in factor and which teams are actually bad and which teams are just taking a while to settle in.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: And that's a truly good question.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna choose to think Liverpool are not actually bad.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: They're just gonna take a while to set in.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: I just have too much faith in the manager.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: By the way, Brandon, this match had one of the funniest moments.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: The fourth official, or one of the people responsible for the scoreboard on the sideline, the substitution scoreboard, he was having an absolute nightmare.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: If I knew his name, he would be getting my worst player of the week.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Iraola was trying to make a triple change for a legitimate five minutes.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: And this guy couldn't get the board right.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Ball would go out of play, irrayola would look over.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: This guy's just like, hey man, I'm not working, you know?
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: And it was like, and then while those subs were trying to come on, Liverpool conceded a penalty in that time.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: If I was a Liverpool fan, I'd be completely outraged.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: I don't think those two things are directly correlated.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: It's just a funny anecdote from the weekend.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: It was one of the funniest things I've seen.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: The subs were begging to come on, they were on their hands and knees ready to go.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: And the Lino just wouldn't let them.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're you're absolutely right about that.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: And it's an odd one because there's so many logistical things that have to happen in a soccer match that people don't think about or or talk about until it goes wrong, and this is the perfect example of one.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Sean, I don't want to get too far off topic, but the the substitution border is really just to notify the fans.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Hey, so-and-so is going in, so-and-so is coming out.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: We really don't need it.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh we have an announcer, he or she will just say, hey, 20 is coming in for 10, or or whatever the sub is.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: So I think it's more cosmetic, if anything else.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: And of course, Irial is going to lose his mind because then they concede the penalty kick.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Morgan Gives White hits the penalty, and it's like, hmm, like if I had my guys on, maybe that wouldn't have happened, but you you live and you learn.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: So and it was unfortunate.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: VAR had some questionable ones this weekend.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: We'll get into that as we go along.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: But yeah, Brandon, it's one of those things.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: This is a classic game's gone.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: If we're if we can't get the board to work, let's pivot.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: It doesn't need to be a hard and fast.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: No, you're not allowed on the pitch until your number goes up there in green.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: I think we can make an adjustment on the fly, you know?
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: After the third or fourth time the ball goes out of play and they're waiting to come on, maybe we say, you know what, just come on in.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Or we just do it like old school, just get a poster board or something, Sean.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Just write one number on one side, one number on the other side, hold it up, turn it, and that's your problem solved.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what do we do?
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: What did we do a hundred years ago when they were playing this level?
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Come on, figure it out, Sean.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: All right, well, moving on to uh some more games on Saturday, Sean.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Whole city, the whole city tigers firing, Sean.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: You got balled by a tiger.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: It's absolutely brilliant.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: The boys, the boys are flying right now.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: One-nil win over Coventry at Coventry.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Sean, I didn't I didn't personally watch this one, but six points out of six for Hull.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: You have to be thrilled to start your season that way.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Brandon, this was on at the same time as Born with Everton, which we'll get to in a second.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: And I chose to watch this game.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: I chose to watch it, and about 20 minutes in, I was like, you know what?
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna switch.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna pivot.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: The quality of play of this one was just not great.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: It was a scrappy affair.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: It could have been mistaken for an EFL championship game.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Nobody would have been shocked if you told them that.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: But the story is, whole city, what an absolute belter of a result.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: This is huge for them and their prospects of staying up.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: They're starting to believe that's a dangerous thing.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: It's only two match weeks in.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Their play on the field against Manchester United was very good.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: I thought they deserved all those points.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: This one, I will say, Coventry, they came out buzzing.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: For the first 20 minutes, they had 80% of the possession, they had several chances, and they just didn't take any of them.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: They got the better of the XG in this game, but Hole were able to make the moment of magic, and it comes from the guy we highlighted last week, Brandon, Balumi, the number 10 from Hole.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: I said, Oh, he got a little turkey to him.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Absolutely brilliant assist.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: A great, great goal.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: I think Hole, they're starting to believe, and that's a dangerous thing.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Hope.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Hope is a dangerous thing.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: It is, it is Sean.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: I'm happy for them, but you're right.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: They're look at where they are on the table, and look at where our team is on the table, and you never would have predicted that even three weeks ago.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: So it's a good one for Hull.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: And I do think Coventry will be a little bit upset with this one.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: At home, yeah, another newly promoted side, a team you were much better than last season.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: To not get anything from this game is very disappointing for Coventry.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's one, of course, we'll we'll circle in April and May, Sean, as we're getting closer to the end of the season.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: And that's a six-point, that's a six-pointer for Hull.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: So not only to win, but to also beat a team that's very likely going to also be in the relegation fight.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: It's it's good for them.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Now, Sean, switching to the game that you saw, uh, Bournemouth Everton, one-one draw.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Bournemouth at home, draw to Everton, probably not a result they would have loved.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Everton on the road, you probably do take that draw.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: What what are your thoughts on that one?
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: It's another one for Bournemouth where I just feel like they let it slip away.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: They score the first goal and they have some chances to get that second goal or the third goal and put the game to bed, and they just don't take them.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: And it's a good goal from Alex Scott, who grew up a boyhood Tottenham fan.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Love Alex Scott.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Who he's been linked with a move away this summer, he's been linked with a move away the last couple summers.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: He's a really good player.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: He probably won't be in Bournemouth for much longer.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: I bet he survives this season and moves elsewhere next year.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: But he scores the goal, and it's one of those things where it's right before halftime, and you think, okay, Bournemouth are going to win this game.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: It feels uh relatively comfortable for them.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: But then Everton just don't quit.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: And they're scrappy under David Moyes.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Uh Tarkowski, the center back, he scores uh with three minutes maybe to play in stoppage time.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: He he always is good for a couple of these a season.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: James Tarkowski.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Usually with his head, sometimes with his feet.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: It was a good finish, you know what I mean?
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: It just kind of falls to him, slots it in the box, strikers finish.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: I think Everton kind of stole a point again.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: I would have said Bournemouth were the better team and maybe deserved all three, but Everton stole three points on the first match week.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: They steal a point here.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: That's kind of what David Moyes does.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: I feel like Bournemouth need to work on that next level.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: They're getting themselves in good positions.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: They need to work on capitalizing and killing teams off.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: And so far through two weeks, they're 0 for two in that regard.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Thanks for breaking that down a little bit.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: And I do feel that these teams outside of that, the sort of big six clubs, Sean, they do seem to lack that killer instinct, some of them.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, you let a team like Everton around who Everton has no problem.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: They don't have the ball, they'll just wait, they'll counter, they'll hit you when they need to hit you.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: And you give them one too many chances and they finish it.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And then it's like, oh, well, now it's one-one.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Now it's a tie game.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Versus maybe if Bournemouth was a city or a Liverpool or a United, that one-zero lead becomes two and three and four-zero.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: So that if you do have a slip up to Everton, it's only four to one or three to one, and you still come out with three points.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: So I I think we'll see that more as the season continues, Sean.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Those those teams in that mid-table range, even the upper mid-table, they've seem to really struggle with putting games to both and I think when you let teams hang around, unfortunately, you're gonna get stung sometimes.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: So that that just just not a great result for Bournemouth.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Everton, of course, will be happy with the able to steal point.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Sean, the next one, the 12:30 p.m.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: game on Saturday, the NBC Cable TV.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Hey, Premier League, this is the one they're telling you you should watch our Tottenham Hotspur at home for the first time this season.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Put up a goose egg newcast to Newcastle.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Newcastle winning 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: Sean, I again did not have eyes on this one either, which it seems to be me.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: I get eyes on him, Brandon.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I might eyes on him next week.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, clear my calendar.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, you're over two, we're over two, you're over two.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: So I don't want to blame my co-host, but I will.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: I think Tottenham.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna start with Newcastle because I don't want to get lost in the sauce with Tottenham.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: I want to give some credit to Matthias Yaisla, who's come in maybe even less than a month ago, and really found a way to get this group playing well.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: I was concerned about them in preseason, thought that they would be one of the teams that would start slowly, eventually figure some things out, but I thought they'd struggle this year just because of the departures and kind of the lack of identity they've had.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: He's done a good job.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: He's come in and he's basically made he's simple things down.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: They're not doing anything really intricate or complex on the pitch, but they're doing what they are built to do pretty well.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: They're built to strike on the counter, they were good from set pieces, they scored a goal from a corner in this one.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And they're they're a well-organized side for a side that's changed a lot and is under new leadership.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: So Newcastle took their chances and deserved the three points.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: I want that clear on the record.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Uh on the flip side.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: I think the big story here and throughout much of the Premier League is Tottenham, because of their transfer activity this summer, they've spent the most money in the Premier League and they're yet to score a goal.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: They've dropped all six points available.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: I think there's some legitimate concern around Tottenham so far.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: I want to, Brandon, I I know it's hard.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: It's not easy to do because we waited so long for them to get back on track and have this good season.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: I want to take a breath and say, I'm gonna quote Dan Hurley, who's a college basketball coach here in the United States.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: He said when he took over the UConn job, he said, You better get us now.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: You better get us now because we're coming.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: And that's what my official statement is you better get us now.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Because I'll tell you this it won't be much longer that we're starting Matisse Tell and Pedro Porro.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: As wingers.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Can happen.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: Can't happen, you know?
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: And that's not Newcastle's fault.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: But in this game, Tottenham were a lot better than they were against Brentford.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: That's the first thing.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: We saw signs of improvement, so I think that's encouraging.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: We weren't good by any means, but we still won the XG battle.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: We created more chances than Newcastle did.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: That's those are the facts of the match.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Newcastle had two shots on target, they scored two goals.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Anthony Olenga, he couldn't find water falling off a boat.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: He has an absolute finish of his life against Spurs.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Yuan Vista, like a half bicycle.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Great, two great goals.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: You just have to clap your hands, tip your cap, say well done.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: For Tottenham, though, we sign Savinho, and this is just some of the things that maybe we are a cursed club, Brandon.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: We sign Savinho midweek.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: He comes into the cup game, scores instantly, scores a second, basically.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: It goes down as an assist because it took a touch on the way.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: And you're like, oh my God, look at this guy.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: He missed a match entirely due to muscle fatigue from a 20-minute cameo.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: So you know what I mean?
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: This is like, what do you do if you're Spurs?
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: There just might be a cursed club.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: So I'm not ruling that out.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: But overall, I'm I'm bullish long-term stuntham.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: There's gonna be growing pains.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: That won't be our finished product.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: It won't be close to it.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: I'm trusting the process.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: What about you?
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I no, I I trust as well.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: I will say I do need a I need a win from them in match week three because my phone is starting to go off.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: And look, I I get the regular banter from from the guys, and that and that's fine.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: But I got people who don't even watch soccer, probably didn't even really watch the World Cup talking talking trash to me about Tottenham.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, all right, this is enough.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: So we gotta get back on track.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Uh Sean, I will be watching the game next Saturday.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: I will clear my calendar, figure it out.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean it's a must-watch.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: It's a must-watch, Brandon.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: You just gotta you gotta figure it out because at least I want to rule you out as a suspect as to what's happening.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: You know, we just need to cross that box and say if we lose, if we lose with you watching, then okay, you know, it's in it's in God's hands, but I need you to need you to watch.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: I want to another anecdote I had from this one.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Voltamade from Newcastle, he is 24 years old.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: He looks 50.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: He looks like he just washed up on shore in castaway.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: It's unreal.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: He comes in, he looks like he is like he's like all disheveled, his jersey doesn't look like it fits him, he's 6'9.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: He comes in and lumps the header down, assists.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: What a world class.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: It's like, what are we doing?
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: When it rains, it pours.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: We'll be better, Tottenham.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: We will be better.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: And like I said, you better get us now.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Get us now.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Get us these first few match weeks.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: That was a scheduled loss.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: We I will say, we do need to realize this is regular season.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: This is not the pre-season.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Not pre-season.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: Our intensity, our urgency, a lot of that needs to improve.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: We'll get better.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, let's let's hope for that, Sean.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Switching to Sunday's game.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: So first game on Sunday, Sean, we had a good one, I think.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: It was Chelsea, Brighton.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: Chelsea winning four to three over Brighton.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Four to three.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: The score line's a little a little bit odd.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: It was really probably four to two.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Brighton scores a tap in with literally four seconds left in the game.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: But it was Pascal Gross, and he is on Team Brandon, so I will gladly take the points.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: But if you don't want to count that one, we don't have to.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: It still counts.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: It's it's on it's on the scoreboard, it counts.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: But no.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Chelsea again, another solid, I think, attacking performance.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: The defense is a little shaky, but also we have to mention Emmy Martinez signed essentially overnight, Sean.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: And they they FedEx overnighted him to Chelsea, and he started on on the day.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Uh I turned on the game this morning and I was like, wait, this happened?
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Had to check my phone and realize I was like, I had to question myself as a podcaster.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: I was like, did I miss that?
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: This transfer happened?
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: No, it happened six hours ago and I was asleep.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: So yeah, Sean.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, Chelsea, Chelsea seems to be firing Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: We had question marks about could they work together?
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Would it work?
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Cole Palmer's been firing.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Jay Al Pedro's been doing well.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: It's really looking to come looking like it's coming together at Chelsea so far this season.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Brandon, I don't get a ton right.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: So when I do, I will be taking some small victory laps.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: I said one thing this weekend.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: My game to watch and the game to take the over in was this Chelsea Brighton game.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And happily we were about 30 minutes in, there's already four goals.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: So I was like, you know what?
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm not dead wrong all the time.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this Chelsea attack is very scary.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: They just that three up top and the positions that Jabby Alonzo has put them in to succeed.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: It's weird when you see a Morgan Rogers join next to a Cole Palmer.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: You think, oh, those are two very similar players that like to be in similar areas.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: When you have them both operating as tens with a striker that is able to do as many things as Geral Pedro's able to do, I think that's a lethal approach in attack.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: There's just so much talent and ability in that front line.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: You see them, they have their fingerprints on all of the Chelsea goals throughout this whole season so far, and they're bagging them.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: They've got seven goals through two games.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: They look really dangerous in attack.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: I do think the defense does need some cheering up.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I think they'll probably, if I had to guess, they'll probably go spend some money on another central defender before the window shuts.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: I think they've got some options in-house too, and maybe they just need some time betting into this new system.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: But the Debu Martinez, unbelievable.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Like you said, FedEx overnight's a great analogy because this truly was quick.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: This moved quick.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: You think, okay, he just signed the other day, probably hasn't trained with the club yet.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Surely he won't play in the first match.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: No, he's right into the starting 11.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: And I don't think he was too bad either.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: I think he immediately becomes the best goalkeeping option at Chelsea, which is an upgrade on Robert Sanchez.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: So that's a good bit of business for them for seven and a half million pounds.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's that's not bad at all, Sean.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: And it's funny you mentioned Chelsea buying another central defender.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Chelsea to me has it seems like they become the team where they're they're watching TV and the remote doesn't work anymore, Sean.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: So instead of getting new batteries for the remote, they just buy a new TV.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: That that's how I feel like Chelsea is.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: I didn't get a great feeling about either team from watching this game.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's kind of the impression I'm just getting from Leeds so far.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: I've watched both their matches and they've both been exactly like you just described.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: You they end up with good results, but you're kind of like, I don't know, I don't know how they got there.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: You know, it's one of those.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: And I thought Brentford were slightly better, at least in the opening 60 minutes of this one.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: But then you look up at the final score line and the stats, and it's relatively equal, a point apiece.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: I feel like that's a fair result.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: This was another one where, like you said, you would like to see if you're Brentford after you go a goal up, just seeing the game off, getting that second goal.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Brandon, another one.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: And I didn't bring this up in the Tottenham game.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: I don't know how there wasn't a penalty given on Kevin Shade.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, he scores a great goal, like a brilliant goal.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: And then has another moment in the second half where I'm pretty sure he was fouled in the box.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: It looked like Bogle fouled him in the box pretty clear as day, and it was just not given.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: And okay, it's one of those, it's like, did VAR change?
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: Because last year that's a penalty.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: In the Tottenham game, Brandon, Marmoush.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: It's it's a stone.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: I hate to say stonewaller.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: It's a stonewaller.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is a penalty that's just given time and time again.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Can I tell you how long the check for VAR was?
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's over.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: That's how quick it was.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Nope, no pen.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: Tottenham, no pen.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: We haven't had a penalty in 40 fucking games.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: 40.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: 40.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Tied for the longest streak in Premier League history.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Conspiracy, Sean.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: You can put a tinfoil out of me, you can do whatever you want.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: They didn't even fucking look at that marmoush tackle.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: It was insane how quick they cleared it.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: At least play, just play along with me.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Go, go, give me one of these, just give me one of these.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And look me in the eyes before you before you bang me.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: No, they they just said, nope, no chance of pen there.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: And I thought, I thought Bradford, I don't know how they continued playing.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Like they relatively, they didn't even appeal that much.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: There were some arguments and appeals, but I would have been irate.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: That seemed like a pretty clear pen to me.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: I agree with you.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: I was watching that too, and I literally was like, How is that not a penalty kick?
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: And like I was like, Oh, we must have been offside.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, wait, no.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: It was like one of those.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: It was, oh, there was a handball in the build-up, or something else happened.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: And it was like, no.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Because I was watching without sound.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: So I was like, oh, there had to be something I missed.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: And then they replayed it back.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: I was like, no, there's nothing I missed.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: It was a pretty clear penalty.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: And and we'll get into it again with our our last game, Manchester United Ipswich Town, because there was another interesting call, I think.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: But yeah, the VAR Sean, I'm not sure what we're doing here.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: So maybe look, maybe they're still in preseason mode too.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: They're not locked in yet.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: They're not gelling yet.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: But let me ask you this, Brandon, just a quick over-under.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna set the line at 52 and a half games before Tottenham get a penalty.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: We're at 40.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: No, we went the whole entire season last year without one.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: I'll take that.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: We were a dog shit side who didn't create too many chances.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: What are we doing now?
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Like what's the excuse this year?
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: And I will say Aston Villa are tied with us with currently they're on a 40-game streak as well.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: And then the next longest in Premier League history, I believe, is 23 games.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: So we're both just getting boned.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: Well, I will say Aston Villa won't get one today because they play Arsenal, so they're definitely not going to get a penalty kick.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: So VA VA Arsenal.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: We'll be we'll be they'll be at 41.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: I'll take the under for Spurs.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: I I do have some faith.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: I think 12 games is a lot.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: We'll get one in the next 12 games.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: But clip this and send it right to the league office.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: Yes, please.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Shot two more games on Sunday.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Uh hinted at the last one, but we'll we'll talk Sunderland Fulham first.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: I did not see this game, but Fulham again, losing again to Sunderland, a team that I had in the relegation fight.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: Maybe they'll still be there, but Fulham might be taking their place in that relegation fight, Sean.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: This was kind of our battle, Brandon.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: I had Fulham in that scrap, you had Sunderland in that scrap, and it was this was at the Stadium of Light, so you would expect maybe Sunderland to be favorites in this one.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: They did get the job done, and I thought they were pretty comprehensively the better side in this one.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: I only watched the extended highlights, I kind of had it on for a few minutes, but statistically they had two over two expected goals.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Fulham had less than one.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: I the possession stats, Fulham dominated possession, but they didn't do anything with the possession.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Even in the highlights, it's just kind of them passing the ball along without a real clear-cut idea of how to break Sunderland down.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: I thought Sunderland's defense was strong.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Mukiele was really good.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: I think Fulham, I just look at the squad and I don't see a bunch of match winners in it.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: I don't, I'm not inspired by hope when I look at this Fulham squad.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: And I do think Sunderland, while they also have a squad that lacks some things you'd like to see, they have a really good coach that's been there a while.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: They have a unit that had an excellent season last year and really believes in each other and likes playing with each other.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: And I think those are just two qualities that saw them win this game that they have and Fulham just don't at this point.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Not saying Fulham won't get there under Arbalella.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: It's just at this point in the season, they are not there yet.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: I'm a little bit concerned about Fulham.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: I don't want to see them go down.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: I like having the cottage in the Premier League, but I think it could be a little bit worse before it gets better, if I'm honest.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: No, that's that's fair, Sean.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: And I'm glad you you brought up both teams.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: And I know this was kind of our two outside of the the bottom three or the outside of the promoted sides, teams that we think that could be in the fight again this year.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: And I guess my bad team was just a little bit better than your bad team today.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: So on the day.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: On the day, yeah.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: But no, I I think Sunderland also hasn't started Europe hasn't really started.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Those games really haven't got going yet.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: So maybe once those games get going, you might see a dip in that form for them.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: But either way, you're at home, you want to get three points, you got the three points, and and you move on.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: Sean, the last game we have to review Manchester United Ipswich Town.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: Manchester United wins 5-2, which is interesting because they were actually down 1-0 uh for a decent amount in the first half.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: But Bruno Fernandez, hat trick, uh essentially a Harry Maguire goal that was turned into an own goal, which was important because if it was a Harry Maguire goal, the goal would not have counted because Harry Maguire had a clear handball uh in the buildup to that goal.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: So, but I think because of the laws of the game, the goal wasn't a hand, the goal wasn't scored by Harry Maguire.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: So that allows it to count versus if that was a Harry Maguire goal, automatically it would not have counted.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Uh, even if it was an accident, quote unquote, accidental handball.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: Weird soccer rule, but yeah, Manchester United gets it done.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: I was worried because 30 minutes into this game, I have my 19th place team against my second place team, and the 19th place team is outplaying them, and I'm like, uh-oh.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Like I should just give up my my my job here because I look horrible.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: But then Bruno Fernandez saved the day and comes in and gets a hat trick, also an assist, a masterclass from him in the second half.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: Um, but to probably to be expected, Sean.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Like, do you did you expect maybe not five to, but should have probably been a good win for United?
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you laid the groundwork there pretty well, Brandon.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: I think this we needed to see a performance out of United after a really disappointing start to the season, and we got it.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: I think from that moment that they scored the first goal, they completely dominated the match.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: Ipswich down, came out to their credit, looked up for the fight again, and then it turned ugly pretty quick for Ipswich.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: They they kind of were getting played through.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: United created a ton of chances, and I would say that score line maybe exaggerates the result a little bit, but it doesn't flatter Manchester United too much.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Like I think they pretty easily controlled and won this game after those first 30 or so minutes.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: So I think United will grow from this.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna get better.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: I I definitely think they're gonna be fighting for those Champions League places.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: It just seems like when you have a guy like Bruno Fernandez, you're you're gonna pretty consistently get chances and you're gonna get goals.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: I think he's just uh at another level right now.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: It's amazing how Portugal used him at the World Cup when you look back, because it's pretty clear he's only really struggled in the last few seasons when people stick him in this deeper role.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: We saw Amarim playing him in a double pivot with Casemiro, and it's just an abject disaster.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: And all of a sudden, oh, you put two midfielders behind him, in this case it's Mainu and Tielemans, and you let him play in that 10 role, and he has his run of the roost.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: So I think that's what you need to do with Bruno.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: It's pretty obvious.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: He's done it his whole career, he's bagged goals, he's bagged assists.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: I think United are going to be in a fine place.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: I like the business they've done in strengthening their midfield.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: I think the challenges for them will kick in, like you said, when Europe starts, and then just how they manage, because a lot of the creative burden does fall on Bruno.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: And just how he's able to do it two times a week, he's in his 30s, that'll be interesting to monitor.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: I think Ipswitch Town, they just need to kind of burn the tape from this one because defensively you can't concede five.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: If you want to be in a relegation battle, you cannot be conceded five.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: No, and Sean, before we switch to the Arsenal Aston Villa game that's taking place today.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: The I learned another thing I learned in this game, there is no lightning rule in the Premier League.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: So during the Manchester United game, the rain is coming down, it's pouring, and the announcer mentions, oh, I just saw lightning in the distance.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: And I'm thinking, oh great, 30-minute delay, get the guys off the field, clear the stadium, shelter in place, the whole nine.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: And they're like, Oh, yeah, you American fans, we actually don't have a rule for that here.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: It's just up to the referee and the and the stadium discretion.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: So they just played through it.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know how I feel about that, Sean, but we should probably get a rule, right?
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: That's actually sick.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: I'm all in on that.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: That is the good stuff.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: In addition to monitoring ref if that was a foul or not, have a look at the sky, you know.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: Tell me what you feel.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: Is that wind coming or is it going?
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: I I love that, you know.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: It's all in the eye of the beholder.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Fans, take take your own chance, choose your own adventure.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: I think that is excellent stuff.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: That is par for the course in a league where we can't get the substitution board right.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: True.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: VAR is operating at light speed now.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: It's just that seems like the Mickey Mousification of the Premier League.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: That seems like a part of it.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just we can't have everything nice and shiny and perfect, Sean.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: Sean, the the last game of this week taking place today, Astonville Arsenal, we will break it down on our midweek episode.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: So we won't get into that.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: But just wanted to mention it.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: We'll also break down, Sean, all of the transfer news as the transfer window, as I mentioned earlier, closes on Tuesday.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: So all the transfers will have to happen.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Papers, everything needs to be done by the deadline on Tuesday before the next window opens up again in January.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: So we'll have a lot to cover on that in the midweek episode, Sean.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: I want to switch gears just a just a bit to our best result, worst result, and our helmet stickers, as we've called them, the best performance and worst performances of the week.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: Let's start, Sean, with the best result, best team result that you think you saw this weekend.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: There's a few really good ones that stand out.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: I don't want to give it to the same team.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: I believe we both gave it to last week.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Or I know one of us gave it to Hole last week.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: And I think they easily could get it again.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: But I'm gonna go in a different direction.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go with uh Sunderland.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: I think because of how we just mentioned uh that we could see either of these teams being drug into a little bit of a relegation scrap.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: I think early in the season, it's important for your fans and for your team to not be in that picture if you're one of those clubs that have been touted to go down.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: I think there's a little bit to it if you have that belief early in the season that you're not actually in the fight.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: You know, you might be able to trick yourself and you won't actually be in the fight.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: And I think the longer it goes where you don't pick up a win, it's it's more concerning.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: So there's a couple of London clubs who find themselves in the relegation scrap.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: I don't know who, besides Full, but I'm gonna go Sunderland for my best result this week.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: They just were able to pick up a win against a team that they're gonna be in direct competition with.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: It wasn't the prettiest, but it was necessary.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: And that stadium of light factor playing at home, I think is a real key for them.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: They have a home field advantage.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: I'll give it to Sunderland this week.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: How about you?
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: It's funny you mentioned talking about Hull last week, and I'm giving it to Hull again.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: And pretty much for the same exact reason why you just gave it to Sunderland for you.
- 41:43SPEAKER_00: I uh I mean to go on the road to beat Coventry City, which is like we talked about these six-point game, Sean, and and that belief.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: Now Hull City's two and two, six points.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: They're technically tied for the top of the tables.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: They're looking at the Arsenals and the Chelsea's, and they're like, hey, we're right with you.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: And there is that belief where it's like yeah, they're they're in the upper echelon, they're eating the caviar tonight, and I think they should celebrate that.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: And I think to go on the road at Coventry, they had 30% 30% possession throughout the game, less expected goals.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: They only had two shots on goal, and to come out with three points and a win is great.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: So I know I gave it to Hall City last week.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: I'll give it to Whole City again.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: I don't think I'll be giving it to Whole City every week, but if they win every game, I'll give it to Whole City every week.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: So Brandon, honestly, I'm glad I didn't just because I had a feeling you were gonna give it to Hull.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: And and as we move to worst result, I'm gonna bring up Coventry.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: So I I that's why I kind of did it.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: I I didn't want to just hammer in one game, but I do agree.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: Like Whole City's such a good shot.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: If we're being honest, that's the best result of the week.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, the team that was touted by by this guy, the one speaking, to pick up 24 points on the season having six through two match weeks is tough.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: So great result from Hole, mauled by a tiger.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: I'm all in.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: I'm rooting for you guys.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: I hope there's egg on my face.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: I think on the flip side, the Coventry result, it's tough.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: You like you said, you really want to get off to a good start, and they have not.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: Arsenal is one thing, that's a that's a different animal in the first week.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: You expect to lose that one at home against Hole when you were the better side and you just couldn't get a goal in that first half, you couldn't break through.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: I think there's a lot of looking around, wondering where the goals are gonna come from.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Are we at the level?
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Those started those sort of doubts start to creep in.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: And I just think they would do well to win one soon.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: And when you look at their schedule, that's the one you think you should win, you know.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: So for that reason, that's the worst result.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: For me, there's a close second that took place in North London.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: Just we're talking result wise.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: There's a certain team hasn't scored yet, you know.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: That could be a shout as well, but I'm interested to hear what you have to say.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: You I'm glad you're we're on the same wavelength here.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: And listeners, we do not actually go over these before we talk about them live to you.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: So yeah, Spurs were my worst result, too.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Nil at home to Newcastle.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Like you and and Sean, again, I feel like you really took the words out of my mouth because it's that outside noise.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Things are creeping in now.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: Are we actually this good?
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Are we this bad in this case for Spurs?
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: Like, what's going on?
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Cody Gakpo now says, Hey, I'm I'm City now.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm going to city.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: I don't want to go to Spurs.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: And it's just all of those things creep in and creep in.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: And I know Spurs have money and they'll probably be active in the next day, but you you worry about a panic buy and you spend 100 million on a guy who's maybe worth 60 or 70.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: And all of those things speaking of that, we already did.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: We spent 100 million on Tanali.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: He thought he was still playing for Newcastle.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: Oh my Christ, was he horrible?
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: He's having a laugh.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: Club record transfer, first 30 minutes played for his old team.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: I I think, Brandon, I think you nailed it with the the point of those doubts starting to creep in.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: And the thing is with Tottenham, when you look, everybody's like, oh, you spent all this money, some of those guys are playing.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: Why aren't you getting results?
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: It's not an entire culture shift that needs to take place at Tottenham.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: They have finished 17th two seasons in a row.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: They have current players that are asking to leave the club because they're now not getting the playing time.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: So guys that have been mainstays over the last few years, Kevin Danto, Pap Tsar, Rich Arlison, are all wanting to leave the club because their minutes are being taken by these new signings.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: That's part of the thing I'm talking about with the unsettled nature of a group.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: It can't be easy to train when guys that are heavily involved in the training and match planning are wishing their way out of the club.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Once this Tuesday deadline passes, Deserbi's able to imprint his style for a few more weeks.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: I think we'll turn the corner, but it's interesting though, because the flip side is you go a couple more weeks without winning, and guess what?
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: Tottenham are in a relegation scrap again.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: And I'm just gonna say I can't do it.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: I mentally, physically, emotionally cannot handle that.
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: So please figure it the fuck out soon.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: And I I I think we will.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: I think we will.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's gonna be a strong, strong lesson in disassociation if they can't figure it out quickly.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: I'll just taught Tottenham what?
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: Who?
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: North London?
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: I never heard of those guys.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm I'm Hall City now because just a Syrial guy.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna follow the league.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: But in the language, yeah.
- 46:15SPEAKER_00: It's a mess, Sean.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: But let's let's go back to a happier note.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: Give me some helmet stickers.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: Your best performances of the week.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: I have I have two.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: Interested to see who you have as as some of the best performances you saw this weekend.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: I've got two as well, Brandon.
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: And I I have to get my guy on the board, Ryan Cherkey.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Just that's kind of a free space on the bingo card.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: If he has a good game, I'm kind of gonna give him a shout-out.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: I think because he scored two goals, he deserves a helmet sticker, uh, a Boyles baller of the week, if you will.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: That's that's my new this week.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: And the name's under construction.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: We're we're trying to figure it out.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: But that's one, and then this next one's twofold, Brandon.
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna give it to Johan Vissa from Newcastle.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: Scores a brilliant goal against Spurs.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: Great, great goal, Joan.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: The real reason you get this, we talk about best performance of the week and the flopping performance he gave to pick up Fallon Mateus Fernandez in this game.
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: It's one of the best dives you'll ever see.
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: He is nowhere near him, and he swan dives in the middle of the park down and then gets up and he's all grinning.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Just, you know, he just he he won one over on the ref.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: He got one over on him.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: So well done, Yohan.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: You you tricked us.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: You scored a great goal and you gave a good acting performance.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: That's a good job by you.
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, that's a that's a good one from you, Sean.
- 47:33SPEAKER_00: My best performances again.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: I I'm still workshopping the name too.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: I don't have a name right now off the top of my head.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go first and foremost, we mentioned him already earlier, Bruno Fernandez coming out with a hat trick and an assist.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: He did not have a good game against Hull City.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: He was frankly terrible, Sean.
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: And I worried he was still in that World Cup mindset where he just was out there getting cardio and not really playing his part.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: And he decided to turn it on and score three goals.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: One, of course, was a penalty, which is fine, but three, you know, three goals is three goals.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: So we'll take that from him.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: My other best performance, Sean, was Dan Andoy from Nottingham Forest.
- 48:13SPEAKER_00: He had a goal, he he was extremely active.
- 48:16SPEAKER_00: I think we we talk about best performances, and it's not always gonna be goals and assists, it's gonna be some other things involved as well.
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: And I think his just activity around the ball, activity around when he's receiving passes, he's making these runs, he's freeing up space for Morgan Gibbs White.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: And I think having a guy like him who's willing to do some of the things that are not in box scores, they're not gonna show up in his highlight reel on YouTube, but help the other players to to get into spaces and to help create other chance chances for others.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: I think that's huge.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: So I just wanted to give him a shout out as well.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, a guy that I think we had decent expectations for, but he he he showed up, and uh, Nottingham Forest is four points in their first two games, and they're gonna be they're gonna be happy with that.
- 49:02SPEAKER_00: I like that shout, Brandon.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: A little bit under the radar, puts in a good performance.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: He we uh he was excellent from what I saw in that match.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: So I think that's it's good to shine some light on him.
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: We have to flip it now.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: We have to talk about our worst performance of the week.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: I guess I'll start things off.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: I have a clear one for this.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: There's a certain type of player I just don't like, and and for goalkeepers, you need to be a commanding presence in the box.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: Say what you want about Debu Martinez.
- 49:27SPEAKER_01: The guy is a commanding presence in the box.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: He'll have a howler or two, he'll kick the ball in his own net once in a while, but he'll own it.
- 49:33SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: He'll put his he'll toss his hand up.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: And Bart Verbrugan for Brighton today didn't toss his hand up.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: He he absolute just disaster class on one of the goals.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: The ball's in his arms, and he just plays patty cake with it.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: It falls right to, I think it was Lavia, who taps it in for Chelsea.
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: His first ever goal.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: Good job by him.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: But Verbruggen is one of these guys.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: He's a highly touted goalkeeper, he's the Dutch national team keeper.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: Every time I watch him, I just feel like he doesn't command things the way I want to.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: Sometimes positionally, he's a little bit out all over the shop.
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: A couple of the goals for Chelsea today, I'm not sure that he was gonna save them, but I don't think he was in the best position to do so.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: I I just don't love what I see from him in comparison to how highly he's rated.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: I like some of the distribution he's able to do with his feet, but I don't like goalkeepers and can't that can't command the area.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: And he certainly didn't do that in this match.
- 50:23SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna say my worst performer of the week was Bart Verbruggen, who will be getting the drop from my fantasy Premier League team.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: He's also on my team, and did not I did not start him this week.
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: I started Anthony Kinsky, which he also gave up two goals.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: So I'm like if we're in the trust tree, Brandon, they're pretty similar.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: A lot of notes of the same, I'm getting the same whiff of potentially a fraud.
- 50:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so the offensive side of Team Brandon in Premier League Fantasy this week, incredible.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: Defensively, we're back in the we're back in the shop.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: We got to hit the training ground, Sean.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: My worst performance, unfortunately, as a defender.
- 51:02SPEAKER_00: This guy, I feel bad for him even bringing it up.
- 51:05SPEAKER_00: But Jacob Greaves from Ipswich Town.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: Sean, first of all, he's playing against he's playing against United.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: They're they're starting to United's starting to turn the screws, and Ipswich just lost.
- 51:17SPEAKER_00: Jacob Greaves scores an own goal, which own goal, it was unlucky.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: It was that was the Harry Maguire shot from distance, hits the inside of Greaves' boot, goes into the net.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: Reason it's an own goal is because the shot was actually going to be off target, and he basically deflected it into the net instead of away from the net.
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: You understand that.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: That happens to every defender.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: However, Sean, just a minute later, he then gives up a penalty kick for United.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: I believe it was in Bueno, in on in on goal, and he kind of you know took him out in the box.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: Of course, we have the 10-minute VAR situation, and then eventually Bruno Fernandez makes the penalty kick.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: So just a really, really bad 10 minutes from Jacob Greaves on an other other on an otherwise even more forgettable day for them.
- 52:05SPEAKER_00: Just not not the best way to start the season for them.
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, you know, they forget about it and move on.
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: But really, just not a great game from Greaves.
- 52:15SPEAKER_00: So unfortunately, he gets my worst performance of the week.
- 52:19SPEAKER_01: I think that's well deserved for Greaves, unfortunately.
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: We hate to do it.
- 52:22SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: But we're somebody's got to get it.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: Yes, I mean that's just how this works.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: You you get the good, you you you you preach the good, you praise it, and you have to highlight the bad too.
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: We call it how we see it.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: I would like to give an honorable mention since I gave one last week as well.
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: So it's a midfielder who was he had a shocker.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: And it was Lucas Bergval last week.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: This week it was Sandro Tanali.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: And I I can't accuse he's been in trouble in the past for some match fixing, betting.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know what I saw those first 30 minutes against Newcastle.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: Maybe it was a case of he still thought he was playing for the lads, the magpies.
- 52:56SPEAKER_01: It was it was bad, it was not good.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: It it will get better.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm gonna keep saying to myself until it happens.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: It'll get better.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: It will get better.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: We cannot finish 17th again.
- 53:04SPEAKER_01: Well let it happen.
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: Maybe if you watch a match, I will.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: I hey look, I got you.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: I got you.
- 53:09SPEAKER_00: Next week I'm I'm locked in.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: Saturday, 10 a.m.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: I'm watching.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: But yeah, there it is.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: There it is.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Appointment viewing.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: We probably won't score again.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: But but you better watch it.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: It's in the calendar.
- 53:21SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm watching it.
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: I'm blocking everything else.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: Uh Sean, I just wanted to give you a quick, quick MLS update.
- 53:27SPEAKER_00: Nothing too major.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: Just wanted to give you a couple scores, a couple moments that happened over this weekend for MLS games.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: We had Miami beating Montreal 7-1, Lionel Messi, four goals, including the fourth, which was a free kick, Sean, and classic Messi free kick, yada yada yada.
- 53:44SPEAKER_00: We got to get on these goalkeepers.
- 53:46SPEAKER_00: I know you got on Verbrugan.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: I don't even know the name of the Montreal goalkeeper, Sean, but uh positionally, I'm like you set a wall up, but then you decide to stand behind the wall.
- 53:54SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: The reason the wall is there is to block it.
- 53:57SPEAKER_00: If if Mets hits it cool and over the wall and he curls it in, shake his hand.
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: And you point to your wall and say jump higher.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: Not my fault.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: But don't, but don't stand behind them.
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: And then when the ball comes in on the other side, ugh, this little half dive.
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: I hate a weak goalkeeper, Brandon.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: I hate it.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: I'm glad we're shouting them out.
- 54:16SPEAKER_01: They deserve all the criticism they get.
- 54:18SPEAKER_01: We got it.
- 54:18SPEAKER_01: I'll say McKinski's name in there too.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: Remember Lucas Zidane, Zidane's son from Algeria?
- 54:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's shambolic what these guys do when they see Messi taking the fruit pick.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they forget.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: They forget how to play soccer.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: Oh shit.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: I'm the one that's just I can use my hands.
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: It's like unbelievable.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: It's like, holy yeah, dude.
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: You're wearing a different colored jersey.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 54:36SPEAKER_00: Like, look at it.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: It looks like it looks like the red card when you throw the guy in, you know, you throw Harry Kane in a goal because your goalie got a red card and you had no subs left.
- 54:46SPEAKER_00: And you're like, oh, just go back in there and try to block this.
- 54:49SPEAKER_00: That's what these guys look like.
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like, you get paid hundreds of thousands of millions of dollars to save balls, and you look like idiots when Messi comes and takes a free kick.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: Like we gotta figure out Messi Messi.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, listen, I'd be I'd be stunned too, but I'm not paid to keep the shotgun.
- 55:04SPEAKER_01: So figure it out.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 55:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sorted out.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 55:08SPEAKER_00: We had some other results, Sean.
- 55:11SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll I'll end with this one, but or I'm sorry, we have two more results I want to go over.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: Uh we had Minnesota, Orlando City, a 3-3 final.
- 55:18SPEAKER_00: The reason I'm bringing this game up, Sean, it was odd.
- 55:21SPEAKER_00: Minnesota goes down 2-0, and then they score three goals in five minutes.
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: They're in Minnesota.
- 55:27SPEAKER_00: You've been there, you've spent time in that stadium, you know, Allianz.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: When it gets rocking, it gets rocking.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: And they score three goals back to back to back.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: Sean, it was ridiculous.
- 55:35SPEAKER_00: It looked like Orlando City just forgot that the game was still going on.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: But Orlando then messes around and scores in the 93rd minute to tie the game up.
- 55:45SPEAKER_00: And both teams kind of leave the field just stunned.
- 55:49SPEAKER_00: Orlando City never recovered from those three goals, but then they do score a goal at the last minute.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: So Minnesota's like, wait, hold on.
- 55:55SPEAKER_00: What happened?
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: That was an odd, odd one.
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: And then the last game I wanted to go over, Sean.
- 56:01SPEAKER_00: Your FC Cincinnati gets absolutely cooked.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: Four piece chicken tenders from Nashville, 4-0.
- 56:09SPEAKER_00: Hani Mukhtar and the boys, different gravy, Sean.
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: It was bad for your boys, Cincinnati.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's why I'm glad I didn't commit to them, Brandon.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: I said they were leading in the clubhouse.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: That was not what I wanted to see.
- 56:20SPEAKER_01: They they're back on the chopping block.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: That was disgusting.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: I saw a little bit of that, saw some highlights.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: Nobody won.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: It was truly usually you're happy with the point, not the case.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: I I like that MLS update.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: That's perfectly well done by you.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: I don't have much for you, Brandon, in terms of European updates.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: We had the Bundesliga get underway, and there was one shocking result in the Bundesliga on Saturday morning.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: Newly promoted Elversburg.
- 56:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely battered up by Erleverkusen.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: First match of the season, Cole Campbell, the young United States national hopeful.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 57:08SPEAKER_01: Starts the scoring.
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: I believe he gets on board with the second goal for Elversburg.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: They take a 3-0 lead in the first half.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: They're cooking Leverkusen.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: It does end 3-2, but a huge win on the first match day for Elversburg.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: Everything else in the Bundesliga went pretty much according to Plantin.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Bayern Munich, they played Friday.
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: They cooked.
- 57:26SPEAKER_01: Harry Kane looked unbelievable as usual.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: Bruce Dortman starts off with a 2-0 win.
- 57:31SPEAKER_01: Good stuff there.
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: A lot of similar notes in Serie A.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: I think the heavy favorites are kind of taking care of business so far to start the season.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: Juventus won again, another 2-0 victory for them.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: No Weston McKenny in the starting lineup, which is of note.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: He missed the match.
- 57:48SPEAKER_01: I'm not exactly sure why.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: I think he picked up a slight knock, muscle injury.
- 57:51SPEAKER_01: He's going to be out a little bit.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: It's nothing too serious, but something to watch.
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: Also in Serie A, I don't want to sound the alarm bells, but Fiorentino were kind of in a relegation fight last year.
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: They're not one of the biggest sides in Italy, but they're a relatively big side.
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: They're in a major city, by all accounts, a wonderful city.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: They have started the season off pretty poorly.
- 58:11SPEAKER_01: I think it was a 4-0 loss in match week one and a 3-0 loss to newly promoted Frozenone in match week two.
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: They've made a lot of transfers.
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: Like they have Fabio Parattici, who was the old Tottenham chairman calling the shots.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: They have been spending this window.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: They're bringing in a lot of talented players.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: It's not clicking for them at all yet.
- 58:28SPEAKER_01: That's just another thing to keep your eye on, you know.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: I'm not so sure what it'll end up looking like, but that's basically all we've had in Serie A.
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: Inter have picked up two wins.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: Como beat Napoli, which was a notable result.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: I think Napoli are in for a little bit of a downturn after some good finishes last couple of seasons.
- 58:44SPEAKER_01: I think the only other thing we have to mention, Brandon, I believe maybe in a preview podcast, I might have locked and thrown away the key, the French league, and given it to PSG.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: It might have been a bit early.
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: They haven't won yet through two matches.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: They're two draws from two, and they were lucky to draw on this one.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: Needed some heroics to get a draw.
- 59:02SPEAKER_01: It's just a situation to monitor in PSG.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: Kind of a lot of turnover there.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: Losing Barcala, some things you wouldn't expect the Champions of Europe two years in a row.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: You'd expect them to have a deeper team where they don't have to kind of prioritize Champions League matches and play patty cake in the league.
- 59:19SPEAKER_01: You would expect them to have two of every position, kind of like Noah's Ark.
- 59:22SPEAKER_01: We have to go by twos.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: They don't necessarily have that, so it's just something to keep an eye on, especially because once the Champions League does start, they do like to rotate a lot in League Uh.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: So I'm interested to see what it looks like.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: I assume they'll still be fine and win, but it's just another thing to keep an eye on.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: I think overall the big news from this weekend, we could both agree, is just the transfers.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: And finally on Tuesday, it comes to a close, but that's where most of our focus will be these next few days.
- 59:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Sean.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: Thank you for the continent update.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: It's good to hear about some of these other leagues that I personally don't pay a lot of attention to, but I I know I want to pay more to.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: So I appreciate your insight.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: I will give one last closing, closing note here, Sean.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_00: Friday night, I was able to go to an NWSL game.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_00: Gotham City, Gotham City FC, up in New Jersey, Harrison, New Jersey.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_00: Played Portland Timbers.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: Sorry, not Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_00: The the women's team of the Portland Timbers, essentially.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_00: Great game.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_00: 1-1 finish, but got to see Sophia Wilson.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_00: She scored a penalty kick for Portland.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: And I I just wanted to give a shout-out to the NWSL.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: I feel like I I know we're typically a men's and a European podcast, but uh went with my good friend Emily and just listening to her talk about the game.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: And it's great to see that the women's game is growing the way that it is.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_00: We have more teams coming into the league.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: The money's growing, the fans are growing.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_00: It was a good crowd at Red Bull Arena, or it's called, excuse me, Sports Illustrated Arena now.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_00: They they changed a name.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_00: It's not Red Bull Arena now.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_01: I just took the train from where I live to New York City, and we directly stopped at Sports Illustrated Arena.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_01: I was staring at it, that's uh that's weird.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: Sports Illustrated is still splashing some money around, huh?
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know where the money is to buy stadium naming rights, but but I had to get a special Sports Illustrated app to access my tickets for the game.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_00: It was a mess.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_01: But game's gone.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the game, the game's gone.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: But but in all seriousness, Sean, it's great to see the NWSL growing and thriving.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: Of course, I'd love selfishly to have a team here in Philly.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_00: I I feel like I the team I do follow is Washington, Washington Spirit with Trinity Rodman, and they're in DC.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, the the league overall is growing, it's healthy.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_00: I I think it's another just another pillar of of this game growing in the US.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_00: I I think and the league itself is besides the English Premier League, the women's version of it, is probably the top league in the world.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_00: Whereas RMLS is probably maybe seventh or eighth, but this is uh the top league, one of the top leagues in the world.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_00: So it's great to see.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: It was great, great experience on a Friday night.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: Definitely would encourage listeners to find their local team, get amongst it.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_00: They also have a USL uh level, so there may not be a team in your city, but you might have a USL team in your city.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah, just get amongst it and yeah, just find ways to enjoy the beautiful game as much as you can.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_00: That's that's my that's my uh closing thoughts.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: Brandon, I love it.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: I think that's a great message.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: Get out and support local.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_01: It could be any grassroots level, whatever you want.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: It's a cool way to learn more about the game, have fun with the game.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: Players are more approachable, and there's different there's all different levels to the sport.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_01: And I do think it's important to highlight that we will be touching on the the women's game a lot, especially as we head into next summer with the Women's World Cup.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: We'll be doing previews for that just like we did for the men's.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_01: So we will cover it, maybe not as in depth as we do the men's, because we're not experts in that regard, but I think the NWSL is a great league, and I do tune into it here and there.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: I should do a better job of tuning into it more, but there's a lot of there's a lot of ballers in the league, Brandon.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_01: Like you said, arguably the second best league in the world in terms of women's soccer.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: So a lot of good stuff there.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you got your boots on the ground at at a match in New Jersey.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: So good stuff.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Sean.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_00: Any any final thoughts from you, Sean?
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: Nothing really.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: I'm hoping we'll we'll have a nice episode midweek planned.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_01: We'll talk some transfers, we'll preview some weekend games, and I'm hoping soon I could come on here in a cheerful mood.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm hoping.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know when that'll be, but I'm hoping at a certain point my club wins a match.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm that's what I'm going for.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: Thank God for Roma.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: You know, we started the season strong, we played we played today.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_01: They're they're in the weird, they're starting both games on Mondays.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_01: I hate that.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: What are we doing?
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: But that's basically all I have.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_00: What anything from you?
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_00: No, no, that was it.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_00: I wanted to give that NWSL shout, but yeah, hoping for a Spurs win next weekend, of course.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_00: And looking forward to the our transfer conversation later this week.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: I feel like I'm gonna have to do some uh some of that big board pointing.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_00: This guy's going here, he's alone there, and who knows how that's gonna look.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_01: It's like Charlie, it's like Charlie Kelly, and it's always sunny with a score down in the basement, and he's trying to figure out Carol!
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_00: It's like it's I don't know, there's there's a lot of stuff happening, I'm not sure what it is, but yeah, and it's and I always find it funny, Sean, how we get to the end of the transfer window and everyone decides to do all their business today and tomorrow.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_00: Like we've been in this window for the whole month, and you guys decide to wait the last the last possible seconds to do all the deals.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_00: So it's always a fun one.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_00: We'll see some.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_00: I'm hoping we'll see some last-minute fireworks from some teams, maybe a panic buy or two, maybe a regretful decision, uh, as these guys are under some serious pressure.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: But we'll we'll definitely break that down on our on our midweek episode.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_00: Sean, thank you as always, my friend.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_00: It's great doing this with you.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_00: Listeners, yes, listeners, thank you for listening, thank you for support.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_00: Tell a friend to tell a friend, and we'll be back with you soon.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_00: Take care.
