- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Welcome to an NFL draft.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Posted by the writers of Patriots dot Com. From now
- 0:10Speaker 1: until you hear the New England Patriots Slight, the countdown
- 0:14Speaker 1: is on. Welcome to the Patriots Draft Countdown presented by
- 0:18Speaker 1: bud Light.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Hey, what's up, everybody?
- 0:21Speaker 3: Welcome to another edition of Patriots Draft Countdown, brought to
- 0:24Speaker 3: you by bud Light. Easy to drink, easy to enjoy.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Bud Light, the official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots,
- 0:29Speaker 3: and guys were just about two weeks to go here.
- 0:32Speaker 3: We're getting a little redundant on the quarterback of it all.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I feel like those guys have been in for visits,
- 0:37Speaker 3: so we're just gonna catch you guys up quick here
- 0:39Speaker 3: in the first segment on some latest news, and I
- 0:40Speaker 3: guess top of the list is Kyle Duggar signing an extension.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Not sure how much that really affects the draft, pol
- 0:45Speaker 3: I think we all still kind of feel like they
- 0:47Speaker 3: could maybe use a free safety, but maybe a little bit.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not sure it's a huge impact on the
- 0:52Speaker 4: draft either, but it is I think a good sign
- 0:54Speaker 4: because and I talked about this a lot during the
- 0:57Speaker 4: season last year, and clearly they thought it was important
- 1:01Speaker 4: to maintain, you know, as much of that continuity as
- 1:04Speaker 4: they could. But I thought Dugger in particular was one
- 1:07Speaker 4: of those guys that had sort of you drafted and
- 1:09Speaker 4: developed second round pick, had some success, made some plays,
- 1:12Speaker 4: had a really strong twenty two season. Maybe didn't have
- 1:16Speaker 4: as many flashy plays last year as he did, But
- 1:19Speaker 4: I thought it was a good message to sort of
- 1:21Speaker 4: send to not just maintain you know, that guy on
- 1:24Speaker 4: the roster, but to say, we understand, you know how
- 1:28Speaker 4: you guys think in there, and this is what we
- 1:29Speaker 4: want to do. We want to reward you for being
- 1:33Speaker 4: on board and being a big part of our team.
- 1:35Speaker 4: It's not like an achievement ofward or anything. The guy's
- 1:38Speaker 4: a good player. So I thought that was a you know,
- 1:40Speaker 4: a good sign, good good all around. I thought it
- 1:42Speaker 4: was good for Kyle Dugger, but also a good message
- 1:44Speaker 4: to send in the locker room.
- 1:45Speaker 5: Yeah, you hear some reports out there that he was
- 1:47Speaker 5: pretty unhappy about the transition tag and getting that placed
- 1:50Speaker 5: on him. So just in terms of his happiness or
- 1:54Speaker 5: his willingness or want to to be here, I think
- 1:57Speaker 5: it's a good thing. To get this extension done sounded
- 1:59Speaker 5: like it. It can't bread together pretty quickly over the
- 2:02Speaker 5: last week or so with OTAs and the spring programs
- 2:04Speaker 5: starting for the Patriots. But go back to the free
- 2:07Speaker 5: safety thing real quick. I do think that that it
- 2:09Speaker 5: continues to be in need. I just don't love him
- 2:12Speaker 5: playing up top like that, like he's Devin mccordy. I
- 2:15Speaker 5: just don't really think that that fits his style. I
- 2:17Speaker 5: don't really think it fits your guy, Jabril Peppers's style either.
- 2:20Speaker 5: So it's not necessarily that they need to bring in
- 2:22Speaker 5: somebody that's gonna play eighty five ninety percent of the snaps.
- 2:26Speaker 5: But can you get it de Ron Harmon type in
- 2:28Speaker 5: the third or fourth round that on third down and
- 2:30Speaker 5: obvious passing situations, that's the player that plays the post
- 2:34Speaker 5: safety role in the man coverage schemes, and you allow
- 2:37Speaker 5: Dugger and Pepper's to be closer to the ball. Last
- 2:39Speaker 5: year career high in free safety snaps for Kyle Dugger,
- 2:43Speaker 5: Paul mentioned maybe not as many splash plays on the ball,
- 2:45Speaker 5: like A big reason why that was because he's so
- 2:47Speaker 5: far away from the ball. You know, if you're all
- 2:49Speaker 5: constantly thirty yards off the line, of scrimmage, you're not
- 2:52Speaker 5: going to be near the ball as often as when
- 2:53Speaker 5: you're playing in the box. So I think that that
- 2:55Speaker 5: remains in need. Maybe not one that they can use
- 2:58Speaker 5: a high pick on this year, but someone in that
- 3:00Speaker 5: third or fourth round range. And there's a few guys
- 3:02Speaker 5: that fit that mold in this year's draft.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Almost makes me think a little bit of Eugene Wilson, remember,
- 3:07Speaker 3: I mean, he was kind of a cornerback coming out right,
- 3:08Speaker 3: and then when mLOY went, he just kind of got
- 3:11Speaker 3: thrust into that free safety role a little bit there.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I think we could go into a whole side story
- 3:15Speaker 4: about that. It was Antoine Harris and Rodney Harrison at
- 3:18Speaker 4: safety in week one, and you guys might recall they
- 3:21Speaker 4: lost thirty one to nothing. In Week two, it was
- 3:23Speaker 4: Eugene Wilson moving to safety and the rest was history.
- 3:27Speaker 3: As they say, all right, well, we've been talking a
- 3:29Speaker 3: lot about Drake May, JJ, McCarthy, Jay and Daniels. They're
- 3:32Speaker 3: all builliing together. We know reports last week that all
- 3:35Speaker 3: three of those guys are coming in. I think May
- 3:37Speaker 3: was here earlier late last week, Daniels I think was
- 3:40Speaker 3: here today, and McCarthy's coming so guys, it continues to
- 3:44Speaker 3: be kind of jockeying between those positions tease. I mean,
- 3:46Speaker 3: it's kind of getting I think we're getting a little
- 3:48Speaker 3: worn out, especially with the third overall pick. As Evan
- 3:50Speaker 3: did his runt about mock drafts, there's just not really
- 3:53Speaker 3: a lot to consider other than I mean, for me,
- 3:55Speaker 3: where I'm at, take May if he's there, otherwise trade down.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I'm a little bit sour on Daniels, but I'd still
- 3:59Speaker 3: be open to take him. But what do you think
- 4:01Speaker 3: Patriots bringing these guys in clearly have interesting.
- 4:03Speaker 6: I think you got to get a quarterback. It kind
- 4:05Speaker 6: of goes back Evan said before that Christmas game might
- 4:08Speaker 6: come back to bite you in the butt. But I mean,
- 4:11Speaker 6: you want to take May, but then I think Daniels
- 4:13Speaker 6: the second best option. I'm not as sold on McCarthy,
- 4:15Speaker 6: but I hope as May or Daniels. So we'll see
- 4:17Speaker 6: in April.
- 4:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I think what's interesting about the visits and really
- 4:21Speaker 5: this entire pre draft process has been a three horse
- 4:23Speaker 5: race for the Patriots and Michael Pennix, bow Nicks, Spencer
- 4:27Speaker 5: Rattler need not apply right Like they're not even in
- 4:29Speaker 5: the conversation and I think does tell you a lot
- 4:32Speaker 5: about what their thought process is. That they're the number
- 4:34Speaker 5: thirty overall pick and where they feel like they're going
- 4:37Speaker 5: to take a quarterback in this draft. That just based
- 4:39Speaker 5: off of everything that they've done. Unless this is the
- 4:41Speaker 5: smoke screen of all smoke screens, I don't really understand
- 4:45Speaker 5: why they would. You know, we can get into that,
- 4:47Speaker 5: I guess later. But they are honing in on these
- 4:51Speaker 5: three guys. These are the three guys that they've said
- 4:53Speaker 5: it continues to to their pro days that they've had
- 4:55Speaker 5: in for thirty visits. It just doesn't seem like they
- 4:58Speaker 5: have any interest in the second tier, third tier quarterbacks
- 5:01Speaker 5: in this draft. It's all about those three guys at
- 5:03Speaker 5: the top. So I don't necessarily take away much about oh,
- 5:06Speaker 5: they're more interested in this guy that guy quite yet,
- 5:09Speaker 5: but I feel like in terms of the tiers of quarterbacks,
- 5:12Speaker 5: they are honed in on those top three guys.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you think, Paul, those guys, I mean,
- 5:16Speaker 3: it was just kind of gotten.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Everything Evan just said. I totally agree with it, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 4: And Michael Panis is the only other one of those
- 5:21Speaker 4: guys that I even have a little interest in, and
- 5:24Speaker 4: I just can't come up with any rational explanation as
- 5:28Speaker 4: to why they've done so little in terms of personal
- 5:31Speaker 4: interaction with him if they were interested in him. So
- 5:34Speaker 4: I got to think it's it's down to those other three,
- 5:37Speaker 4: and I think it's really you know, I think it's
- 5:40Speaker 4: between McCarthy in May because I think they feel like
- 5:45Speaker 4: Daniels is gonna.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Go to Washington.
- 5:47Speaker 4: So I'm kind of like tease, I'm not really sold
- 5:50Speaker 4: on McCarthy. So to me, I've I've wrapped my mind
- 5:53Speaker 4: around Drake Man.
- 5:54Speaker 6: You don't go for and thirteen to pick JJ McCarthy,
- 5:57Speaker 6: That's what I'll say.
- 5:58Speaker 5: But that's a fair point. That's the thing that I've
- 6:01Speaker 5: always said about JJ McCarthy that's given me pause about
- 6:04Speaker 5: it is I just don't see game changing talent on film.
- 6:08Speaker 5: I don't see a guy that's going to come in
- 6:09Speaker 5: here and be your franchise savior. And I'd hate to
- 6:12Speaker 5: put that on any of these guys, but at least
- 6:14Speaker 5: with Jayden Daniels, obviously at the Heisman Trophy season, you
- 6:17Speaker 5: can see that on film of this guy can be
- 6:19Speaker 5: an absolute game changer. Drake May with the physical tools,
- 6:22Speaker 5: absolute game changer. You know MVP caliber type traits. I
- 6:26Speaker 5: what are JJ McCarthy's traits in that category. I'm just
- 6:29Speaker 5: not really necessarily sure. I think that he's a great
- 6:32Speaker 5: quarterback for a lot of different teams. I just don't
- 6:35Speaker 5: feel like the Patriots are one of those teams.
- 6:37Speaker 3: All right, Well, you heard Evan mentioned Jade and Daniels.
- 6:39Speaker 3: We've got a pack show and we're going to go
- 6:40Speaker 3: right now to Evan's film review of Jade and Daniels.
- 6:42Speaker 3: You also talk to Derek Klassen a little bit about
- 6:45Speaker 3: the quarterbacks, so it is still a quarterback jam show,
- 6:48Speaker 3: and we'll finish it off though talking with the position groups.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Everybody loves w receiver, tight end, running back, So jam
- 6:53Speaker 3: pack show. Check it all out.
- 6:55Speaker 5: You can find him on Bleacher Report and Reception Perception
- 6:58Speaker 5: with his QB chart. He's Derek class and Derek been
- 7:01Speaker 5: a big fan for a long time. Excited to talk
- 7:03Speaker 5: to you about these quarterbacks today. How you doing?
- 7:07Speaker 7: First of all, I appreciate that, and second of all,
- 7:09Speaker 7: I'm doing great, doing good. It feels like we're kind
- 7:12Speaker 7: of really getting into that like real end push of
- 7:15Speaker 7: the draft season.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So it feels good.
- 7:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Right, the hay is almost in the barn, as we
- 7:19Speaker 5: say around here, with the draft, and I've been reading
- 7:21Speaker 5: your charting on quarterbacks probably since I don't know, nineteen
- 7:27Speaker 5: twenty something like that. So those are great resources and
- 7:30Speaker 5: you guys should go check them out. So we're going
- 7:31Speaker 5: to talk to Derek, of course about those quarterbacks, a
- 7:33Speaker 5: big area of need for the Patriots. I don't know
- 7:36Speaker 5: if you knew that, Derek, but you know the Patriots
- 7:38Speaker 5: might take a quarterback. It's a little topic around here
- 7:40Speaker 5: every once in a while. So let's start at the top.
- 7:43Speaker 5: And I want to start with Drake May because I
- 7:45Speaker 5: have an affinity for Drake May. I've fallen in love
- 7:48Speaker 5: with him during this process, and it's always great to
- 7:51Speaker 5: see somebody like yourself also see a lot of the
- 7:54Speaker 5: same things that I do, and why I think he's
- 7:56Speaker 5: such a great prospect for the Patriots in particular, you
- 8:00Speaker 5: see in Drake May And do you buy into some people?
- 8:03Speaker 5: You know, I'll name names, Chris Sims, you know has
- 8:05Speaker 5: him as QB six. You know, he's kind of all
- 8:07Speaker 5: over the place with all these rankings. But where are
- 8:10Speaker 5: do you fall on Drake May.
- 8:14Speaker 7: I think he's fantastic, Like I think he's a truly
- 8:16Speaker 7: unbelievable prospect. Like we've done this whole thing with Caleb
- 8:19Speaker 7: being like a, you know, one of the best prospects
- 8:22Speaker 7: of a generation, and I think he absolutely is. I mean,
- 8:24Speaker 7: we're probably not going to talk about him a whole
- 8:26Speaker 7: lot here because there's no shot the Patriots get him.
- 8:28Speaker 7: But I think May is like in that same tier
- 8:31Speaker 7: of player I even like, to me, May is the
- 8:33Speaker 7: one a I will say, part of that is just
- 8:37Speaker 7: like my personal affinity for certain traits at quarterback, like
- 8:41Speaker 7: I think, I mean, May is just obviously much bigger.
- 8:43Speaker 7: I think some of what he can do as a
- 8:46Speaker 7: design runner I think is a little bit more valuable
- 8:48Speaker 7: than Caleb. And then to me, what really really puts
- 8:50Speaker 7: Drake May over the top. I mean, there's a lot
- 8:52Speaker 7: of reasons, and we'll touch on all of them, but
- 8:54Speaker 7: to me, it's just the way that I think he
- 8:57Speaker 7: handles the pocket and is able to throw with bodies
- 8:59Speaker 7: around him is like, really really special. I think it's
- 9:02Speaker 7: the type of stuff you see from a lot of
- 9:03Speaker 7: the best quarterbacks in the NFL already, whether it's Josh Allen,
- 9:07Speaker 7: Justin Herbert, even Dak Prescott, I think has his quality
- 9:10Speaker 7: when he's thrown around bodies in the pocket and stuff.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I think May has that to him.
- 9:15Speaker 7: And then when you combine that just on top of
- 9:17Speaker 7: like the raw arm talent that he has, where he's
- 9:19Speaker 7: just able to put.
- 9:20Speaker 2: The ball in.
- 9:22Speaker 7: Places that seem almost impossible for a quarterback. And I
- 9:25Speaker 7: know people are gonna harp on him for like the consistency,
- 9:28Speaker 7: and I do think he has a couple of sprays
- 9:30Speaker 7: a game, but I think what you get out of
- 9:32Speaker 7: him on most plays and especially on his best plays,
- 9:35Speaker 7: it's what you chase when you're looking for a potential
- 9:39Speaker 7: top five, top six type of quarterback, and I think
- 9:41Speaker 7: Drake May has all that stuff. And I think what
- 9:43Speaker 7: people need to remember too is like Drake May is
- 9:45Speaker 7: still a very young player. He's the youngest quarterback I
- 9:48Speaker 7: think in this class. JJ might be a little bit younger,
- 9:51Speaker 7: but he's still like one of the He's a very
- 9:53Speaker 7: very young player, and I think for him to be
- 9:55Speaker 7: as good as he is with even some of the
- 9:57Speaker 7: flaws that people have, like oh, his footwork isn't perfect.
- 10:00Speaker 7: He has two sprays a game, he has like one
- 10:03Speaker 7: completely dog brained play like Josh Allen every game that
- 10:06Speaker 7: seems like the dumbest thing you've ever seen. But I
- 10:08Speaker 7: think so much of that stuff is fixable, especially when
- 10:11Speaker 7: you just look at the raw talent that he has
- 10:13Speaker 7: and so much of the just gamer that he plays with.
- 10:16Speaker 7: Like I just I could gush about him forever. I
- 10:18Speaker 7: truly think he's a really really special prospect.
- 10:20Speaker 5: I love that, and I think that's the original thing
- 10:23Speaker 5: that drew me to him is what you mentioned, and
- 10:25Speaker 5: coming off the Mac Jones experience. For Patriots fans, I
- 10:29Speaker 5: think the biggest thing is is that you have to
- 10:31Speaker 5: have a baseline level of arm talent and being able
- 10:34Speaker 5: to drive the football down the field in those muddied pockets.
- 10:37Speaker 5: I think with Mac, when he had a clean pocket
- 10:40Speaker 5: to step up into and really put his weight behind
- 10:42Speaker 5: a throw, he had the NFL caliber arm to get
- 10:46Speaker 5: the ball where it needed to go. But as things
- 10:48Speaker 5: started to fall apart around him, I think what we
- 10:50Speaker 5: noticed here in New England is that now all of
- 10:53Speaker 5: a sudden, he's thrown off his back foot or he's
- 10:55Speaker 5: thrown from muddied pockets and he's not able to step
- 10:57Speaker 5: into it, and he wasn't able to generate that velocity
- 11:00Speaker 5: that he needed. I remember there's one throw I watched
- 11:02Speaker 5: early on where Drake May is backed up on his
- 11:05Speaker 5: own end zone and he kind of pumps to the
- 11:07Speaker 5: middle of the field to hold the hook defender and
- 11:10Speaker 5: then hits the crossing route basically flat footed coming across
- 11:13Speaker 5: the field the other way. And I was like, there's
- 11:15Speaker 5: no offense to mac, but there's just no way that
- 11:17Speaker 5: he can make that throw. And I think that that's
- 11:20Speaker 5: what we're looking for as Pats fans now, is that
- 11:22Speaker 5: raw talent and ability, that Josh Allen type of quarterback.
- 11:26Speaker 5: And that's why so many of us have fallen for
- 11:28Speaker 5: Drake May. One last question on Drake May. I feel
- 11:31Speaker 5: like I know where you're gonna her head is gonna
- 11:33Speaker 5: be at with this. But a lot of people, a
- 11:36Speaker 5: credible people have said that he needs to sit, that
- 11:39Speaker 5: he needs to be sat for a year, maybe maybe
- 11:42Speaker 5: the Jordan Love track, or you know, even just Patrick
- 11:45Speaker 5: Mahomes sit his rookie season and then play year two.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Where do you fall on that line and do you
- 11:49Speaker 5: think that he's so raw that he has to sit
- 11:51Speaker 5: behind a veteran quarterback.
- 11:55Speaker 7: My take, honestly, with almost every prospect is that they
- 11:58Speaker 7: would probably benefit from sitting like I even think Caleb
- 12:01Speaker 7: like would benefit from.
- 12:02Speaker 2: A year like I that's just generally a thing.
- 12:04Speaker 7: I believe the reality is that most guys just aren't
- 12:08Speaker 7: like It's teams want to go play guys and they
- 12:10Speaker 7: want to see their investment on the field immediately. But
- 12:13Speaker 7: I think, like within that context of thinking that most
- 12:15Speaker 7: guys are just going to play anyway, I think may
- 12:17Speaker 7: is totally fine being in that bucket because I think
- 12:20Speaker 7: what we've seen a lot of the times is that
- 12:22Speaker 7: the guys who don't sink and are able to swim
- 12:25Speaker 7: as as rookies even if they're not you know, like May,
- 12:28Speaker 7: like I said, his footwork is not perfect. He is
- 12:30Speaker 7: probably gonna have to learn a little bit of how
- 12:32Speaker 7: NFL offenses work, coming from two different styles of a
- 12:35Speaker 7: raid offenses at at North Carolina, Like, there are going
- 12:38Speaker 7: to be growing pains. But I just think he's so
- 12:40Speaker 7: unbelievably talented. He's so athletic, he's so just like raw
- 12:45Speaker 7: and brave in the pocket, and that type of stuff
- 12:46Speaker 7: I think is stuff that you can see translate and
- 12:50Speaker 7: get productive play out of, even if he's not perfect.
- 12:52Speaker 7: I mean, I think even just last year we saw
- 12:54Speaker 7: this from Anthony Richardson right, Like Anthony Richardson, Is he
- 12:57Speaker 7: the most accurate quarterback right now? No, Like he could
- 13:00Speaker 7: probably clean up his footwork a little bit. Is he
- 13:02Speaker 7: the fastest processor in the league right now? Like?
- 13:04Speaker 6: No.
- 13:04Speaker 7: He came from an offense that didn't ask him to
- 13:07Speaker 7: do as much as an NFL offense is going to
- 13:09Speaker 7: and I think it's going to take him a little bit.
- 13:11Speaker 7: It's going to take him a year or two to
- 13:12Speaker 7: like really ramp up into that. But we still saw
- 13:15Speaker 7: him be a very productive and like, very impressive quarterback
- 13:19Speaker 7: in the few games that he was able to play,
- 13:21Speaker 7: in part because it's the arm talent that that we
- 13:24Speaker 7: both mentioned, where like he just has the raw ability
- 13:26Speaker 7: to make certain throws even if maybe he's late, maybe
- 13:29Speaker 7: his feet are off, like, he still can make certain throws.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And I think that that's really valuable.
- 13:33Speaker 7: And then he has pocket toughness, which I think he's
- 13:36Speaker 7: always going to translate immediately, especially I mean it's not
- 13:40Speaker 7: even just that he has pocket toughness, it's that he
- 13:42Speaker 7: was very battle hardened behind a terrible.
- 13:44Speaker 2: North Carolina offensive line.
- 13:45Speaker 7: Like he's had a lot of reps where he's had
- 13:47Speaker 7: to be the guy under pressure and I think that's
- 13:49Speaker 7: going to actually help when he when he goes into
- 13:51Speaker 7: the NFL and then he just has like that creative
- 13:55Speaker 7: I'm going to be superman. I'm going to go make
- 13:57Speaker 7: a play. And I think when you're just a rookie
- 13:59Speaker 7: thrown in to the fire, you have to have that.
- 14:01Speaker 7: You have to have that mentality and then also the
- 14:03Speaker 7: ability to go capitalize on it.
- 14:05Speaker 2: I think May checks both boxes.
- 14:07Speaker 7: So yeah, he probably would benefit from getting a year
- 14:09Speaker 7: to clean up his footwork and learn NFL offenses. But
- 14:12Speaker 7: like he's he's going to be just fine. I think
- 14:14Speaker 7: if he has to play right away.
- 14:15Speaker 5: Yeah, agreed. We could gush about Drake May for probably
- 14:17Speaker 5: another thirty minutes. So let's move on to the next
- 14:20Speaker 5: couple quarterbacks here. You didn't you mentioned JJ McCarthy, But
- 14:24Speaker 5: I want to get to Jaden Daniels first before we
- 14:26Speaker 5: get to McCarthy. Jaden Daniels, I feel like is one
- 14:29Speaker 5: of those guys that when I first watched him, I
- 14:31Speaker 5: was like, this guy's electric. He can do a million
- 14:33Speaker 5: different things. I think he's a much better passer than
- 14:36Speaker 5: you know, those prototypical guys coming out that are pure
- 14:39Speaker 5: runners like he is. But where do you follow with
- 14:42Speaker 5: Jaden Daniels. It does sound like the commanders might be
- 14:45Speaker 5: locking in on him number two, but if he's there
- 14:48Speaker 5: for the Patriots at three. Overall, what's your take on Jayden?
- 14:53Speaker 2: I think he's a fine prospect.
- 14:56Speaker 7: I think I'm a lot lower on him than most people.
- 14:59Speaker 7: To your point, though, like when you first watch him,
- 15:01Speaker 7: whether it's on Sundays or just your first exposure to him,
- 15:04Speaker 7: or on Saturdays or just your first exposure to him
- 15:06Speaker 7: on film, there is a lot of stuff to like. Like,
- 15:08Speaker 7: I think he is a very accurate passer to basically.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Every level of the field. On the throws that he does.
- 15:13Speaker 7: Make, I think he throws short and outside the numbers
- 15:16Speaker 7: really well.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I think he throws down the field really well.
- 15:19Speaker 7: Even though he didn't throw the middle of the field
- 15:21Speaker 7: a lot, which is a concern I'll bring up in
- 15:22Speaker 7: a little bit, he did throw it well when he
- 15:25Speaker 7: actually triggered on it, and I think that at least
- 15:28Speaker 7: the ability to do it is a nice thing in
- 15:31Speaker 7: his bag. He's obviously an unbelievable athlete. I mean, he's
- 15:34Speaker 7: going to step in and be one of the five
- 15:36Speaker 7: best probably rushing threats in the NFL. Immediately, and that's
- 15:40Speaker 7: I think gonna be a really nice boost to whatever
- 15:42Speaker 7: offense he takes. You know, whatever you get out of
- 15:44Speaker 7: him as a passer year one, you're gonna have that
- 15:46Speaker 7: floor with him as a runner, which I think is
- 15:48Speaker 7: super valuable.
- 15:49Speaker 2: He's the guy who I think he.
- 15:52Speaker 7: Progresses through concepts fairly well, and like he doesn't make
- 15:57Speaker 7: glaring mistakes. It's just sometimes he won't trigger and be aggressive,
- 16:01Speaker 7: which leads to like, okay, sometimes he leads yards on
- 16:04Speaker 7: the field, but also he never really puts the ball
- 16:06Speaker 7: at risk. So it's a little bit of like, which
- 16:09Speaker 7: do you want out of your quarterback?
- 16:11Speaker 2: If that makes sense?
- 16:12Speaker 7: Yeah, me personally, why I'm a little bit lower on
- 16:14Speaker 7: him is like I want the guy who's just gonna
- 16:16Speaker 7: blindly rip a dig route like I just that's why
- 16:19Speaker 7: I love Drake May. He'll just do it. Jaden is
- 16:22Speaker 7: a little bit less willing to do that. He's a
- 16:24Speaker 7: little bit more in the probably not as bad as
- 16:27Speaker 7: Russell Wilson, but it's like in that Russell Wilson Jalen
- 16:29Speaker 7: Hurtzish where it's like this is probably just never gonna
- 16:32Speaker 7: be his area of the field. And then the other
- 16:36Speaker 7: thing with Jayden that I think has turned me off
- 16:38Speaker 7: from him a little bit is I don't think he
- 16:41Speaker 7: manages the pocket very well, and I don't think he
- 16:43Speaker 7: makes plays. I don't think he makes throws off script
- 16:47Speaker 7: very consistently or very well, and he's not very willing
- 16:49Speaker 7: to do it. Like he's the guy where okay, one
- 16:51Speaker 7: to two to three in a clean pocket, he's gonna
- 16:53Speaker 7: make a good throw for sure, there's no doubt about that.
- 16:55Speaker 7: I think when he gets pressured and gets moved off
- 16:58Speaker 7: his spot a little bit, he is very quick to like, Okay,
- 17:01Speaker 7: the play's dead, I'm running. And that's great at the
- 17:05Speaker 7: college level. I think in the NFL it's really really
- 17:07Speaker 7: hard to get away with.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Being that way.
- 17:09Speaker 7: I think the best NFL quarterbacks are guys who, Okay,
- 17:13Speaker 7: initial plays dead, I'm gonna get outside of the pocket
- 17:16Speaker 7: and look to throw first. I think you even see
- 17:18Speaker 7: this from like people who are comparing him to Lamar Jackson.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson is very.
- 17:22Speaker 7: Much like outside the pocket, eyeser up, he's looking to throw,
- 17:25Speaker 7: but run if he has to. But he's very much
- 17:27Speaker 7: a guy who's looking to make throws outside of the pocket.
- 17:29Speaker 7: But Jaden, I just don't see that as much, and
- 17:31Speaker 7: I think that's a really hard thing to get a
- 17:33Speaker 7: guy to do.
- 17:34Speaker 2: So that's kind of some of my concerns. Like I said,
- 17:36Speaker 2: I think.
- 17:36Speaker 7: There is a lot to like, I'm just a little
- 17:39Speaker 7: bit more hesitant on or a little bit more wary
- 17:42Speaker 7: of what his ceiling is, I think than some other people.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you brought up a lot of really
- 17:46Speaker 5: good points. The thing that stood out to me is
- 17:49Speaker 5: that there's this play against Florida where he's got Malik
- 17:53Speaker 5: Neighbors jumping up and down in the middle of the
- 17:55Speaker 5: field asking him to throw him the ball, and he
- 17:58Speaker 5: passes it up wide open, dig round in the middle
- 18:00Speaker 5: of the field, and he ends up running for fifty yards.
- 18:03Speaker 5: On the play, he just takes off scrambling and he runs,
- 18:05Speaker 5: And on the one hand, it's like, wow, that running
- 18:07Speaker 5: ability is dynamic. That's difference making. But on the other hand,
- 18:10Speaker 5: in the NFL, you'd probably rather him take the dig
- 18:13Speaker 5: route right and let the playmakers do the work instead
- 18:16Speaker 5: of having him have to do everything himself. So that
- 18:19Speaker 5: was one of those plays that I felt like was
- 18:21Speaker 5: the perfect encapsulation of the yin and the Yang with
- 18:23Speaker 5: Jaden Daniels, where he's gonna pass up some things in
- 18:26Speaker 5: the middle of the field that other quarterbacks are guys
- 18:29Speaker 5: in the league will trigger on, like you said, But
- 18:32Speaker 5: then he's also going to be able to have that
- 18:34Speaker 5: tantalizing running ability. So it's like, you know, how do
- 18:38Speaker 5: you pick on him too much for it when he
- 18:40Speaker 5: just broke off a forty five yard scramble. But I
- 18:43Speaker 5: think that that, coupled with the fact that he does
- 18:46Speaker 5: have the smaller frame and the durability concerns, if he's
- 18:49Speaker 5: always looking to run, then is he gonna last, you know,
- 18:52Speaker 5: and is it gonna be able to be consistent and
- 18:54Speaker 5: sustainable at the next level or our legitimate concerns. The
- 18:58Speaker 5: other concern I wanted to ask you about. I know
- 19:00Speaker 5: I always do this. It always sounds like I'm trashing
- 19:02Speaker 5: on Jaden when I'm like, not really trying to. It's
- 19:05Speaker 5: just I think that there are some concerns there with him.
- 19:08Speaker 5: The other thing that I think was a little bit
- 19:10Speaker 5: concerning to me as well, is that so much of
- 19:12Speaker 5: his production came off those slot fade routes, throwing to
- 19:15Speaker 5: neighbors and too Brian Thomas Junior, and where are his
- 19:19Speaker 5: layups in an NFL offense, and where's the easy yards
- 19:22Speaker 5: for him, especially if he comes to a place like
- 19:25Speaker 5: New England where he might not have those outside winners.
- 19:28Speaker 5: You know, he might not get step into an offense
- 19:31Speaker 5: right away with the Patriots where he has two premium
- 19:35Speaker 5: elite receivers on the outside to make those plays. Do
- 19:38Speaker 5: you think that he can be a guy that survives
- 19:41Speaker 5: without the supporting cast, I guess is the best way
- 19:44Speaker 5: to look at it.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I would be a little bit concerned.
- 19:48Speaker 7: And I think that's a great point because even in
- 19:50Speaker 7: my charting that I did for him, a lot of
- 19:52Speaker 7: his production, like you said, is either those slot fads
- 19:55Speaker 7: that they ran or just standard goballs, or he threw
- 19:58Speaker 7: a lot of like hitches and curls outside the numbers.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And to your point, it was a lot of like, Okay,
- 20:02Speaker 2: I've just.
- 20:03Speaker 7: Got to top fifteen picks on the outside. I'm going
- 20:05Speaker 7: to go give him a shot. And like I said,
- 20:07Speaker 7: he's great at doing that. But when you no matter
- 20:11Speaker 7: what team he goes to, he's going to have like
- 20:13Speaker 7: a on a relative level, less talent outside than he
- 20:17Speaker 7: had at LSU. And so you're gonna have to calibrate
- 20:19Speaker 7: for that. And so when you couple that with some
- 20:21Speaker 7: of the concerns I have with him throwing the middle
- 20:23Speaker 7: of the field, It's like, ah, this gets a little
- 20:26Speaker 7: bit sticky. And then with me, the other concern with
- 20:28Speaker 7: Daniels is I think he's actually even more so than receiver.
- 20:32Speaker 7: I think a guy who absolutely needs a rock solid
- 20:35Speaker 7: offensive line just because of some of the you know,
- 20:37Speaker 7: pocket management and like quick to run type of tendencies.
- 20:40Speaker 2: That I see from him.
- 20:41Speaker 7: I think, I mean, obviously nobody is going to replicate
- 20:45Speaker 7: the Eagles offensive line, but like he needs to be
- 20:47Speaker 7: in a Jalen Hurts esque like incubator where that you
- 20:51Speaker 7: can kind of almost nullify that part, like that issue
- 20:54Speaker 7: of his game. And I think, especially if he goes
- 20:57Speaker 7: to Washington, that's going to be a problem because their
- 20:59Speaker 7: offensive line is to arriable. And then I think even
- 21:01Speaker 7: in New England it would probably be an issue because
- 21:03Speaker 7: their offensive line is a little bit better than Washington's,
- 21:06Speaker 7: but I think also still still very much an issue.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, it's a good point, And you know that's
- 21:12Speaker 5: why I've gravitated towards Drake May throughout this processes. I
- 21:15Speaker 5: just feel like for the Patriots it's just makes more
- 21:18Speaker 5: sense it fits together a little bit better. But I'm
- 21:20Speaker 5: glad you brought up the things about Jayden Daniels as
- 21:22Speaker 5: a processor, because I do think he is much better
- 21:26Speaker 5: getting through progressions than some people would think at that
- 21:29Speaker 5: type of quarterback. And I also think that, you know,
- 21:32Speaker 5: even though he doesn't have the biggest of arms, the
- 21:35Speaker 5: throwing motion and the mechanics of his throwing are really
- 21:38Speaker 5: really clean, maybe even cleaner than Lamar coming out in
- 21:41Speaker 5: some ways, and just in terms of the footwork and
- 21:43Speaker 5: the mechanics of his release and things like that. But
- 21:46Speaker 5: let's wrap this up with two quick questions on JJ McCarthy.
- 21:50Speaker 5: We could probably go along on this one as well,
- 21:52Speaker 5: so feel free to go as long as you want.
- 21:54Speaker 5: But JJ McCarthy, I think this has been the most
- 21:57Speaker 5: frustrating aspect. I'm not gonna lie to you, Derek about this.
- 22:01Speaker 5: This process, this draft process, is that he's just without
- 22:04Speaker 5: playing a football game, has all of a sudden come
- 22:07Speaker 5: out of nowhere in his you know, a top five
- 22:09Speaker 5: quarterback prospect that we have to take seriously at three. Overall,
- 22:12Speaker 5: with that being said, I am taking it seriously. Do
- 22:14Speaker 5: you take it seriously? Because at this point there's too
- 22:17Speaker 5: much smoke for me to just completely dismiss that JJ
- 22:20Speaker 5: McCarthy's in this conversation.
- 22:23Speaker 7: Yeah, I do take it seriously, and I personally am
- 22:26Speaker 7: not that high on him as a prospect, but I
- 22:28Speaker 7: would be stunned if he falls any further than like
- 22:31Speaker 7: the Giants at six. Like, I think there's almost no
- 22:34Speaker 7: world where he gets past that, because I do think
- 22:37Speaker 7: all of the you know, smoke about him going that
- 22:39Speaker 7: high isn't smoke, Like that's I think it's very very real.
- 22:42Speaker 7: I think teams really do like him in that mold,
- 22:44Speaker 7: and I think a big part of the reason is,
- 22:47Speaker 7: I mean, you get a lot of like, okay, you know,
- 22:48Speaker 7: Big School won a lot.
- 22:50Speaker 2: That's that's always going to help.
- 22:51Speaker 7: But I think a lot of it too is his
- 22:53Speaker 7: very young player who was in a general sense like
- 22:56Speaker 7: kind of untested just between the competition that he was
- 23:00Speaker 7: playing on relative or against, relative to how good his
- 23:03Speaker 7: team was, and then just some of the things that
- 23:05Speaker 7: the offense asked him to do, Like they run a
- 23:07Speaker 7: pro style offense in the sense that they like go
- 23:10Speaker 7: under center and they'll run play action and he gets
- 23:12Speaker 7: to check plays.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Every now and then.
- 23:14Speaker 7: But in terms of the throws that they're actually asking
- 23:16Speaker 7: him to make, and the stuff they're actually asking him
- 23:18Speaker 7: to do in terms of posting that processing is not
- 23:22Speaker 7: that much more impressive than like what Jaden Daniels was
- 23:25Speaker 7: asked to do or Klub or Drake may like, it
- 23:27Speaker 7: really isn't that different, even though the presentation looks a
- 23:29Speaker 7: little bit more NFL like they did a lot of
- 23:32Speaker 7: they would just do that like return motion where xtra
- 23:35Speaker 7: receiver comes back into the formation, goes back out and
- 23:38Speaker 7: they throw the fly out and it's like the easiest
- 23:39Speaker 7: read in the world and he probably got a thousand
- 23:42Speaker 7: yards just throwing that route. So I think because of
- 23:45Speaker 7: all that relative untestedness, and then you look at the
- 23:48Speaker 7: arm strength that he has, the athleticism again some of the.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Winning you can just be like he's a mystery box.
- 23:54Speaker 7: You can see whatever you want because there's such a
- 23:57Speaker 7: relatively small sample of things, and then you just get
- 23:59Speaker 7: to project tools into being whatever you want. I've been
- 24:02Speaker 7: a little bit more cautious with it in terms of
- 24:05Speaker 7: like how I project it, but I do understand why
- 24:08Speaker 7: some teams are like, you know, you could project these
- 24:11Speaker 7: tools with you know, three years of development into being
- 24:14Speaker 7: you know what Jordan Love has become or something of
- 24:16Speaker 7: that of that nature.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a good cop. But I think the biggest
- 24:19Speaker 5: things with me with JJ's first of all, there's still
- 24:23Speaker 5: some of those WTF plays on his film where he's
- 24:26Speaker 5: just throwing the ball in the team meetings and stuff like.
- 24:28Speaker 5: I can't get the Maryland game out of my head
- 24:30Speaker 5: either where you know, he's back to back turnover worthy
- 24:33Speaker 5: plays in the red zone, or the very very first
- 24:36Speaker 5: play from scrimmage against Alabama and the playoff where he
- 24:39Speaker 5: just throws a terrible and I don't think it counted.
- 24:41Speaker 5: I think the guy was out of bounds or something,
- 24:43Speaker 5: but it still counts in my book, right, you know,
- 24:46Speaker 5: in PFF's turnover worthy plays, they'll still count. So you
- 24:49Speaker 5: look at those types of plays those are are concerning.
- 24:52Speaker 5: The other thing is that he has that wide, elongated
- 24:55Speaker 5: base that he throws from to really drive the ball
- 24:57Speaker 5: down the field. And I wonder, you know, going back
- 24:59Speaker 5: to the mac Jones thing that we were talking about
- 25:01Speaker 5: with Drake May, when those pockets are more condensed and
- 25:04Speaker 5: there's more bodies around him, there's more people flying around,
- 25:08Speaker 5: is the arm strength going to be as impressive as
- 25:10Speaker 5: what it seems to be from those Michigan pockets, Like
- 25:13Speaker 5: I feel like we had to adjust with Mac to
- 25:15Speaker 5: Alabama pockets, like these are Michigan pockets that he's throwing
- 25:18Speaker 5: from last year. So where do you kind of grade
- 25:22Speaker 5: his physical tools because I feel like I'm a little
- 25:24Speaker 5: bit lower on like his arm, talent and even his
- 25:28Speaker 5: mobility at times than other people. Where other people talk
- 25:31Speaker 5: about him on the same plane as Drake May. And
- 25:33Speaker 5: when it comes to those types of traits.
- 25:36Speaker 7: As it pertains to Drake May, Yeah, I don't think
- 25:39Speaker 7: he's close to us talented as Drake May. And that
- 25:42Speaker 7: is not even really to take away from JJ. That
- 25:43Speaker 7: again is just like how much I think Drake May
- 25:45Speaker 7: is super talented. My comparison for McCarthy's arm has actually
- 25:49Speaker 7: been Baker. Yeah, where Baker can like he can put
- 25:53Speaker 7: RPMs on the ball, Doue like he can spin it,
- 25:55Speaker 7: especially over the middle of the field. It's just that
- 25:58Speaker 7: Baker and j are very much throwers where it kind
- 26:02Speaker 7: of takes everything in their body to get all of
- 26:05Speaker 7: that velocity.
- 26:06Speaker 2: And it's like, Okay, that's cool.
- 26:07Speaker 7: That gets them to where they need to be for
- 26:09Speaker 7: the NFL threshold and all that stuff.
- 26:10Speaker 2: It gets them over it.
- 26:12Speaker 7: But because they're sacrificing, like you know, putting all of
- 26:15Speaker 7: this effort into the velocity, they kind of lose a
- 26:17Speaker 7: little bit of control. And I think you especially see
- 26:19Speaker 7: that with McCarthy when he's either throwing outside the numbers
- 26:23Speaker 7: where you need like a little bit of air under
- 26:24Speaker 7: the ball, get some arc on it, when he's throwing
- 26:26Speaker 7: like corner routes, some of the deep outs, all that
- 26:28Speaker 7: sort of stuff. And then every now and then you
- 26:30Speaker 7: can see it on like the crossing routes, like the
- 26:32Speaker 7: deep overs they would throw in the offense where maybe
- 26:35Speaker 7: it's trailman coverage and you can't.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Just pin it on a guy.
- 26:37Speaker 7: You've got to like put a little air under it,
- 26:39Speaker 7: let your guy, you know, put the ball over the defender.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I think sometimes he can struggle to do that.
- 26:44Speaker 7: So I do agree in the sense of like physical talent,
- 26:48Speaker 7: he's more of like a B B plus than like
- 26:50Speaker 7: in the A plus range like Drake and Caleb and
- 26:53Speaker 7: all that stuff. And then athletically probably not ever going
- 26:57Speaker 7: to really be a guy that is a serious run
- 26:59Speaker 7: threat for you. It could be like you know, where
- 27:02Speaker 7: one or two times a game you run his own
- 27:04Speaker 7: rate on you know, fourth and one or whatever. I
- 27:05Speaker 7: think he could probably do that, But generally, I think
- 27:07Speaker 7: he's more just a guy who gives you enough enough
- 27:10Speaker 7: athletic ability to get outside the pocket and make plays.
- 27:13Speaker 7: But he's not gonna be one of those guys who
- 27:15Speaker 7: is like a serious, serious rushing threat every week, the
- 27:18Speaker 7: way that you know Jaden or Drake or Caleb are
- 27:20Speaker 7: going to be.
- 27:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree, all right, last one for you. In
- 27:24Speaker 5: terms of the rest of the quarterback class, I feel
- 27:26Speaker 5: like that's the best way to put it. Who is
- 27:28Speaker 5: your favorite out of the next tier of Pennix, Knicks,
- 27:32Speaker 5: maybe even Spencer Rattler. Do you have a favorite out
- 27:34Speaker 5: of that group?
- 27:37Speaker 7: I go back and forth between Nix and Rattler because
- 27:41Speaker 7: they're just two completely different flavors. Like I grade them.
- 27:44Speaker 7: I have the same exact grade on them for Bleacher Report.
- 27:46Speaker 7: It's just that one Nicks. Nix is more of like,
- 27:50Speaker 7: I know what I'm getting here. I know I'm getting
- 27:52Speaker 7: a guy who pretty accurate to almost all levels of
- 27:56Speaker 7: the field, has enough arm strength, even though it doesn't
- 27:59Speaker 7: really I think he's a good enough athlete to actually
- 28:02Speaker 7: be more of a designed runner than even like JJ,
- 28:04Speaker 7: who we just mentioned. I think he can be in
- 28:06Speaker 7: the Daniel Jones, you know, get five hundred yards out
- 28:08Speaker 7: of this type of runner.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I think he's a guy.
- 28:11Speaker 7: Who generally doesn't make mistakes, gets the ball out of
- 28:14Speaker 7: his hands cleanly. He can do all the RPO, you know,
- 28:16Speaker 7: quick game stuff. To me, he's more like in the
- 28:20Speaker 7: I think if bo Nix becomes like Andy Dalton, that
- 28:22Speaker 7: would not really be a surprise to me, and I'd
- 28:25Speaker 7: really have a hard time seeing him be like terrible.
- 28:28Speaker 7: So I think in the if you just want a
- 28:30Speaker 7: guy who you know what you're gonna get, Nix is
- 28:32Speaker 7: totally fine. I think if you want the flash, Rattler
- 28:35Speaker 7: is the guy. Rattler is just like I think I
- 28:39Speaker 7: said something like this on Twitter, but like, to me,
- 28:40Speaker 7: the two guiding principles for like a really really good
- 28:44Speaker 7: quarterback prospect are arm talent and pocket management. Rattler's got
- 28:48Speaker 7: it man Like arm talent. I mean, I don't even
- 28:50Speaker 7: need to really talk about that. I think we've all
- 28:52Speaker 7: seen Spencer ratleyh throw football. But the pocket management stuff
- 28:55Speaker 7: really impressed me when I went back and charged him,
- 28:57Speaker 7: because that South Carolina offensive line. If you guys haven't
- 28:59Speaker 7: seen it very bad, Like it's terrible.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I don't know what was going on there.
- 29:04Speaker 7: I think someone tweeted a thing where like I think
- 29:07Speaker 7: in like ten of twelve games they had a different
- 29:09Speaker 7: starting five up front, which is just that's not how
- 29:13Speaker 7: you want to operate in the SEC.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Especially in college.
- 29:15Speaker 5: You don't see that very often.
- 29:16Speaker 7: Yeah, right, And so I think for him to have
- 29:20Speaker 7: to deal with that was just really tough, and it
- 29:21Speaker 7: obviously led to some just terrible plays because when you're
- 29:25Speaker 7: behind on the scoreboard and you're under that kind of pressure,
- 29:27Speaker 7: you're just naturally going to make bad plays. But I
- 29:29Speaker 7: think you also saw a lot of really really good
- 29:31Speaker 7: ability for him to move around the pocket, keep his
- 29:33Speaker 7: eyes up, keep a firm base, throw from some really
- 29:36Speaker 7: weird and tight platforms like we were just talking about
- 29:39Speaker 7: with like you know, JJ and Jayden, that might be
- 29:41Speaker 7: an issue, but with Rattler, I don't think that's a
- 29:44Speaker 7: problem at all. I think he can make any throw
- 29:45Speaker 7: from any platform, no matter how crowded it is. So
- 29:48Speaker 7: I think there's definitely some consistency issues you're gonna have
- 29:51Speaker 7: with Rattler in terms of accuracy, in terms of maybe
- 29:54Speaker 7: some of his scattered decision making, but man, if you
- 29:56Speaker 7: can get him into I think a little bit more
- 29:58Speaker 7: stable situation than he had. The raw talent is just
- 30:01Speaker 7: I think leaps and bounds better than any of the
- 30:05Speaker 7: non top four guys.
- 30:06Speaker 5: I love it.
- 30:07Speaker 3: I love it.
- 30:07Speaker 5: He's Derek Klassen from Bleacher Report and Reception Perception. Go
- 30:11Speaker 5: give him a look on Twitter as well at QB
- 30:14Speaker 5: class and Derek, I really appreciate you doing this. It
- 30:16Speaker 5: was a lot of fun.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you so much for having me on. This
- 30:19Speaker 2: is great.
- 30:20Speaker 3: All right, folks, it's maybe the episode you've been waiting for.
- 30:22Speaker 3: We still got quarterbacks to do, but today we're going
- 30:24Speaker 3: to rifle through running backs, tight ends, and yes, wide receivers,
- 30:28Speaker 3: all positions to need for the Patriots. Maybe tight ends
- 30:31Speaker 3: a little bit less so after signing Austin Hooper and
- 30:33Speaker 3: Hendra Henry there at that position. But let's start off
- 30:36Speaker 3: with running back guys in this position. Start with you,
- 30:38Speaker 3: Evan that you know it's kind of been devalued a
- 30:39Speaker 3: little bit, and I don't think there's really a high end,
- 30:42Speaker 3: you know, number one kind of guy, But there are
- 30:44Speaker 3: a number of later round guys. Why don't you give
- 30:46Speaker 3: us those some of the top round guys that maybe
- 30:48Speaker 3: maybe maybe a little bit too soon for the Patriots.
- 30:50Speaker 5: Yeah, so this is not a particularly strong running back
- 30:53Speaker 5: class at the top. Like you said, there's no Christian McCaffrey,
- 30:56Speaker 5: there's no Saquon Barkley. There's not even a Jamier Gibbs
- 30:59Speaker 5: in this class. This is or Bijon or one of
- 31:01Speaker 5: those guys. This is a Day two and three running
- 31:04Speaker 5: back class. I think the number one running back consensus
- 31:07Speaker 5: for the most part is Blake Korum from Michigan. I
- 31:09Speaker 5: also hear a lot of Benson from Florida State as well.
- 31:12Speaker 5: He's up there too. But those two guys that are
- 31:14Speaker 5: really the start, I would say probably in the third round.
- 31:19Speaker 5: May maybe one of those guys sneaks into the back
- 31:21Speaker 5: of the second round just because somebody wants to jump
- 31:23Speaker 5: ahead and pick one earlier than everybody else will. But
- 31:26Speaker 5: at some point in this draft there'll be a run
- 31:29Speaker 5: of a run of running backs that will all come
- 31:32Speaker 5: off the board, and those guys can all be a
- 31:36Speaker 5: part of a committee and be you know, useful players
- 31:39Speaker 5: at the NFL level. They're not again, they're not going
- 31:41Speaker 5: to be bell cows. They're not going to be that
- 31:43Speaker 5: stud running back. But if you're talking about getting a
- 31:47Speaker 5: tag partner for Ramandre Stevenson, you know those exist in
- 31:50Speaker 5: this draft in droves. Like there's a lot of those guys,
- 31:52Speaker 5: but none of them really are looked at as like
- 31:54Speaker 5: difference makers or game changers.
- 31:56Speaker 3: What do you got, PAULI? And any of these guys
- 31:58Speaker 3: strike your fans out?
- 31:59Speaker 4: I mean, obviously I like Korum a lot, but I
- 32:01Speaker 4: agree with Evan in terms of, you know, where does
- 32:04Speaker 4: it make sense for the Patriots. I also like Jonathan
- 32:06Speaker 4: Brooks a little bit, although kind of one year of production,
- 32:10Speaker 4: so maybe some question marks there. There are guys that
- 32:13Speaker 4: were lead backs. There were guys that you know that
- 32:15Speaker 4: certainly carried the load. But I think, you know, like
- 32:17Speaker 4: Korum is a guy that you look at him, you're like, oh,
- 32:19Speaker 4: he must be a passing back because he's not very big,
- 32:22Speaker 4: but he is that kind of a league guy. And
- 32:24Speaker 4: I like the way evn't talked about it. A tag
- 32:26Speaker 4: team guy for Remandre Stevenson. I just don't think you
- 32:30Speaker 4: can afford to do it. I think you're going to
- 32:32Speaker 4: be looking at Day three guys and I'm not even
- 32:36Speaker 4: sure that you have enough room for that. I think
- 32:38Speaker 4: that that's it's a spot like you can't fill everything
- 32:40Speaker 4: in one draft, and I'm not sure running back meets
- 32:43Speaker 4: the threshold here. There's some guys that can play. And
- 32:46Speaker 4: I would add, you know Benson as well with Florida
- 32:49Speaker 4: State that Evan mentioned. I do like some of these players.
- 32:52Speaker 4: I think there's some skill, not enough really for the
- 32:54Speaker 4: Patriots to think about him in day two.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Yeah, so as we get into day two, day three,
- 32:58Speaker 3: tis any of those guys.
- 33:00Speaker 6: I think Korum is a day two, day three guy.
- 33:02Speaker 6: He kind of reminds me of Philip Lindsay, just very downhill.
- 33:04Speaker 6: Also catch the ball. That's one of the comps over there,
- 33:07Speaker 6: Philip Lindsay. They you know, yeah, no made a Pro Bowl.
- 33:11Speaker 6: Yeah no, fifty eight rushing touchdown or touchdowns at Michigan.
- 33:14Speaker 6: You can't ignore that. Can do a bit of everything.
- 33:16Speaker 6: So that's kind of the sweet spot where i'd take
- 33:18Speaker 6: a running back. Other than that, if you're the Patriots,
- 33:20Speaker 6: you're looking six seventh round hopefully and maybe undrafted free agents.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Were we were into Bucky Irving, we were at the combine.
- 33:26Speaker 3: We were talking Bucky Irving and then he kind of
- 33:29Speaker 3: had a terrible combine. But historically like his You know,
- 33:32Speaker 3: he looked explosive in the games, but we got there
- 33:34Speaker 3: in the testing numbers not so much.
- 33:36Speaker 5: Yeah, So Bucky Irving's an interesting guy. And you know
- 33:39Speaker 5: some some of these other guys too, like Tyrone Tracy
- 33:42Speaker 5: Junior from Purdue or Dylan Lobby, the local kid from
- 33:44Speaker 5: You and h those guys are all interesting. I just
- 33:46Speaker 5: feel like when they sign Antonio Gibson, those guys are
- 33:49Speaker 5: more of those sub package pass catching backs. Probably not
- 33:53Speaker 5: what they're looking for now. They're probably looking for somebody
- 33:56Speaker 5: in that early down roll Ramandre Damien Harris, like that
- 34:00Speaker 5: sort of running back, which there are some options to.
- 34:03Speaker 5: My My favorite running back of this entire class is
- 34:05Speaker 5: Marshaon Lloyd from USC. I just think that he's got
- 34:08Speaker 5: the ability to run between the tackles and catch the
- 34:10Speaker 5: ball out of the backfield great Senior Bowl week. But
- 34:13Speaker 5: he's also like a vertical threat in the passing game too.
- 34:15Speaker 5: Seems you know, run the run the wheel route, you
- 34:18Speaker 5: know that sort of thing. Yeah. Yeah, just definitely one
- 34:22Speaker 5: of those backs that can do a bit of everything.
- 34:24Speaker 5: And the way that he runs does remind me a
- 34:27Speaker 5: little bit of Vermondre where he's a bigger back, but
- 34:29Speaker 5: he has that ability to move laterally and make guys
- 34:32Speaker 5: miss and find the right holes and things like that.
- 34:35Speaker 5: So he's probably an early day three guy. I would
- 34:37Speaker 5: say maybe end of round three, early round four, but
- 34:41Speaker 5: you know that's probably where I started even thinking. Is
- 34:43Speaker 5: that fourth round pick. I've kind of pegged it as
- 34:46Speaker 5: a tight end spot, but maybe they think of it
- 34:48Speaker 5: as more of a running back spot.
- 34:50Speaker 3: Yeah. Braylen Allen from Wisconsin was once the other one.
- 34:52Speaker 3: Giant dude. I mean, he's like fun to watch. Maybe
- 34:54Speaker 3: not not Derek Henry, but like kind of similar size.
- 34:57Speaker 6: I got a late round guy. I love the NFL bloodlines, Paul.
- 34:59Speaker 6: We talked about this in the last episode. But Frank
- 35:02Speaker 6: Gord Junior, all right, guy, I love Frank Gord Junior
- 35:05Speaker 6: can handle the workload and that's like, you know, potential
- 35:08Speaker 6: sixth seventh round guy. Maybe u DFA.
- 35:10Speaker 4: So yeah. So Will Shipley is a guy that I've
- 35:12Speaker 4: always kind of watched at Clemson. Pretty productive. I get
- 35:15Speaker 4: a little worried about guys that have that much wear
- 35:17Speaker 4: and tear before they even get into the league, but
- 35:20Speaker 4: pretty productive guy. I agree again with both Tis and Evan.
- 35:24Speaker 4: I don't think there's that star power in this group.
- 35:28Speaker 4: So it's gonna be your flavor, your particular liking. You're
- 35:32Speaker 4: gonna take someone in round five or something, and you're
- 35:35Speaker 4: gonna hope that maybe he's better than Kevin Harris and
- 35:38Speaker 4: maybe he can earn a roster spot. Will Shipley's a
- 35:41Speaker 4: guy I thought that had some versatility, you know, a
- 35:44Speaker 4: lot of production in the ACC. I know people don't
- 35:46Speaker 4: think of that as as strong as his other conferences,
- 35:49Speaker 4: but I think he has some ability to in Irving
- 35:52Speaker 4: your guy, because you guys had me on Bucky Irving too,
- 35:55Speaker 4: so I watched him man, you know, and Evans again
- 35:58Speaker 4: right about Gibson probably mitigates that need, but he struggles
- 36:02Speaker 4: in pass protection. I don't think that's.
- 36:05Speaker 5: Uh, he's smaller. That that was not a.
- 36:06Speaker 4: Third down back that you necessarily clamor.
- 36:09Speaker 5: To, Yeah, he's a smaller guy. I think the hope
- 36:12Speaker 5: was was that he does show a lot of explosiveness
- 36:14Speaker 5: on tape and that that did not translate to the combine. Now,
- 36:18Speaker 5: historically speaking, running backs, it's not a big combine position
- 36:21Speaker 5: because so much of it is how you carry the
- 36:23Speaker 5: ball in pads and how you break tackles and stuff
- 36:26Speaker 5: like that, so it's not really a big combine position.
- 36:28Speaker 5: But Bucky Irving is one of those guys. I think
- 36:30Speaker 5: his r S was like one point nine out of
- 36:33Speaker 5: ten or.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Like it was.
- 36:34Speaker 5: It was a bomb, you know, it was a very
- 36:35Speaker 5: very bad combine. Sorry, I like you a.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Lot, So let's let's then, uh, let's move on to
- 36:41Speaker 3: tight ends. And I mean i'd say it's kind of
- 36:43Speaker 3: a similar class maybe. I mean you have Jatavian Sanders
- 36:45Speaker 3: probably at the top, but otherwise you're really looking at
- 36:48Speaker 3: like day two day.
- 36:50Speaker 4: Sorry, I I just you guys, do you know what?
- 36:55Speaker 3: You know what the problem with brought Howers is? I
- 36:57Speaker 3: just I You're limited because I'm like, I'm like, I
- 36:58Speaker 3: can't even think about him. Don't even get excited about him,
- 37:01Speaker 3: because there's plenty of reasons obviously to get excited about
- 37:03Speaker 3: brock Bowers.
- 37:04Speaker 6: So wanted you give us a little brock Bowers. I mean,
- 37:06Speaker 6: he's been doing it for a while. Is he a
- 37:07Speaker 6: senior junior senior junior junior? He did in the in
- 37:11Speaker 6: the one of the finals he went off. So I
- 37:12Speaker 6: wasn't really focusing too much on the top guys because
- 37:15Speaker 6: as a fan. I'm a low worried if they pick
- 37:16Speaker 6: a tight end above the fourth so I'll go down
- 37:20Speaker 6: to some of the lower round guys. We talked with
- 37:22Speaker 6: Tonat and at the combine, but also I said it
- 37:25Speaker 6: in the intro episode, Dallon Hulker from Colorado State just
- 37:28Speaker 6: one of those receiving tight ends. He can break loose,
- 37:31Speaker 6: good hands, has some speed for being a big guy.
- 37:33Speaker 6: So that's one of the guys I'd like to see
- 37:34Speaker 6: the pass maybe snag.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Later in the drafts. Sonat's all over the place right
- 37:37Speaker 3: like everybody's got its Phil Perry. I mean, he just
- 37:39Speaker 3: seems like he's kind of that sweet spot of like
- 37:42Speaker 3: a fourth round kind of guy. Really athletic, you know,
- 37:45Speaker 3: maybe needs to you know, work on blocking and who
- 37:47Speaker 3: doesn't really at this level. But he's a favorite through
- 37:50Speaker 3: I got a red flag on him.
- 37:51Speaker 4: He's a tight end out of Iowa who went to
- 37:53Speaker 4: Kansas State and Iowa what was wrong? And he played
- 37:56Speaker 4: he played hockey with the tight end factory. Why didn't
- 38:00Speaker 4: we go there?
- 38:01Speaker 5: Well, there's a guy named Eric all who's also in
- 38:04Speaker 5: this class, who plays at Iowa. But I'm just gonna
- 38:06Speaker 5: come out and say this tight end class stinks. It's awful. Okay,
- 38:10Speaker 5: I'm just gonna be honest with you, especially coming off
- 38:14Speaker 5: of the tight end class last year and how stacked
- 38:16Speaker 5: that group was. This group is brock BAERs gap, Jitavian
- 38:21Speaker 5: Sanders gap. People that might make an NFL roster. That's
- 38:25Speaker 5: this class.
- 38:26Speaker 6: Let's have it like some of the best NFL tight
- 38:28Speaker 6: ends are drafted in the mid round, So who knows,
- 38:30Speaker 6: it's crap teas.
- 38:32Speaker 5: With that being said, Kate Stover So, Kate Stover is
- 38:36Speaker 5: a converted defensive end, which I like, right because he's
- 38:40Speaker 5: got he's got some some nastiness to him, you know,
- 38:43Speaker 5: because he does come from that defensive background. So if
- 38:46Speaker 5: you want a guy that can put his hand in
- 38:47Speaker 5: the dirt and block some people, Cad Stover can do it.
- 38:50Speaker 5: He's just not a dynamic receiver.
- 38:52Speaker 4: Right, and he'll take some time. And the fact that
- 38:54Speaker 4: you have Henry and Hooper, two veterans in front of him,
- 38:56Speaker 4: would give you some time. But again, this is the
- 38:58Speaker 4: day three guy. This is Yeah, you're just not in
- 39:01Speaker 4: a position. It's not a luxury. That'd be a luxury
- 39:05Speaker 4: pick to take a guy and not expect anything else.
- 39:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the one guy that I would probably
- 39:10Speaker 5: put in that category of let's take this guy as
- 39:13Speaker 5: a flyers, THEO Johnson from Penn State, because of how
- 39:16Speaker 5: good he was at the combine six six two fifty five.
- 39:19Speaker 5: He is the second most athletic combine tester at the
- 39:22Speaker 5: tight end position. Ever, in thirty years of the combine,
- 39:25Speaker 5: nobody has tested better than him, I think except one guy.
- 39:27Speaker 5: Think it was Vernon Davis who tested ridiculous. So he's
- 39:31Speaker 5: that ball of clay of just pure athleticism. Didn't have
- 39:35Speaker 5: a ton of production at Penn State in the receiving game,
- 39:38Speaker 5: passing game. But if you're looking for the untapped potential
- 39:41Speaker 5: high upside, that sort of guy, I would say THEO Johnson.
- 39:45Speaker 5: I've liked Benson it throughout the entire process, so I'm
- 39:47Speaker 5: in on him as well. But in terms of this
- 39:50Speaker 5: tight end class, there's just it's just not exciting. There's
- 39:53Speaker 5: just not much there. And I think for a team
- 39:55Speaker 5: like the Patriots that you really have so many holes
- 39:59Speaker 5: to burn a pick in the top one hundred or
- 40:02Speaker 5: the top one twenty five, even on one of these
- 40:04Speaker 5: tight ends, it's gonna have to be the right guy,
- 40:06Speaker 5: like it's gonna have to be a guy that you
- 40:07Speaker 5: really like.
- 40:07Speaker 3: I just throw Jared Wiley in there from TCU two
- 40:10Speaker 3: just says, if you want like a third tight end,
- 40:11Speaker 3: like a big blog, I mean, he's like a six
- 40:12Speaker 3: six two seventy. I mean he's maybe that third guy,
- 40:15Speaker 3: which I mean could be a role. But again, do
- 40:17Speaker 3: you really need to draft that. They have so many
- 40:18Speaker 3: other needs. So without further ado, though, we're gonna get
- 40:21Speaker 3: right to the wide receivers now, and I'm not sure
- 40:23Speaker 3: how much how long this segment's gonna go. We're gonna
- 40:25Speaker 3: try to keep it right. Ivan, go easy on these guys, know,
- 40:30Speaker 3: but we've been Look, we've we've been talking and we
- 40:32Speaker 3: were saying before, like we've talked Marvin Harrison, Leak, Neighbors,
- 40:35Speaker 3: Roma Dune Day, those kind of top Yes, yes, yes,
- 40:39Speaker 3: them all. There's plenty of analysis out there. I mean,
- 40:41Speaker 3: we can touch briefly upon those guys, but really it's
- 40:43Speaker 3: more about more realistic options for the Patriots. Of course,
- 40:46Speaker 3: like they could go sideways and take Harrison or Neighbors
- 40:49Speaker 3: at the top. We don't really think that's gonna happen,
- 40:51Speaker 3: but you know, I'll tee you up first.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Evan.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Though, as we get down, you know, into that like
- 40:55Speaker 3: late first round, early second round. That's where the Patriots
- 40:58Speaker 3: maybe are gonna be picking or they could trade up.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Who do you see those guys in there? I know
- 41:01Speaker 3: Adie Mitchell is probably the top.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Yeah, Adie Mitchell, and both Texas guys Adie Mitchell, Xavier Worthy,
- 41:06Speaker 5: both guys I think are really good, gonna be good pros.
- 41:10Speaker 5: I have my tiers are published on on Patriots dot
- 41:13Speaker 5: com for these receivers. I have twenty guys that I
- 41:15Speaker 5: that I think are gonna be top one hundred picks
- 41:17Speaker 5: in this class. Maybe at some point towards the end here,
- 41:19Speaker 5: I'll just rattle all of them off so we can say, well,
- 41:22Speaker 5: you didn't talk about this guy wedcad to go to
- 41:24Speaker 5: a minute six second four, So I'll t tease up
- 41:28Speaker 5: for this because we were just talking about this off
- 41:30Speaker 5: the air. The one guy that rowse up for me
- 41:33Speaker 5: more than any other player in this class from when
- 41:35Speaker 5: I started doing this in January to now is Xavier
- 41:38Speaker 5: Lagete from South Carolina. When I watched him initially, I
- 41:41Speaker 5: got a lot of le viscashonal vibes down at the
- 41:44Speaker 5: Senior Bowl. Also just stiff, you know, big you know,
- 41:48Speaker 5: two hundred and twenty one pound guy, some vertical speeds,
- 41:51Speaker 5: some scheme touchability, but not really a great route runner.
- 41:54Speaker 5: But the more that you watch him, you see some
- 41:57Speaker 5: other guys that he could develop into that are a
- 42:00Speaker 5: much better comp than Leaviska. But I know you have.
- 42:04Speaker 3: I had.
- 42:04Speaker 6: I don't know if I get killed for this. I
- 42:06Speaker 6: had a faster and Kwon Bolden. All right, he okay, No,
- 42:09Speaker 6: I'm serious. He's built, he's got hands, he can he
- 42:11Speaker 6: can play deep, play across the middle, a very dangerous
- 42:14Speaker 6: can run after the catch. That's kind of like the
- 42:15Speaker 6: guy the Patriots need. And this could be a second
- 42:18Speaker 6: round steal. And that's like that sweet spot of where
- 42:20Speaker 6: you want to get a guy. You hope he's a
- 42:21Speaker 6: day one starter or at least gets a lot of
- 42:23Speaker 6: playing time in his first year. So that's who I have.
- 42:25Speaker 5: So the only thing I'd say about that is that
- 42:27Speaker 5: an Kwon Bolden was an awesome route runner. Yeah, really
- 42:30Speaker 5: quick feet, really good.
- 42:31Speaker 4: Was also much faster when he came out of school
- 42:33Speaker 4: than what people remember. Yeah, like the Arizona and Kwon
- 42:37Speaker 4: Bolden was electric. I think he had two hundred and
- 42:40Speaker 4: fifty yards in his first ever game. Yeah, and then
- 42:42Speaker 4: he sort of became kind of plotting, the crafty guy.
- 42:45Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, can take the hits, good hands, reliable.
- 42:49Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what So my comp this whole time for
- 42:51Speaker 5: the get Spindibo. I just think that he's one of
- 42:53Speaker 5: those guys that probably isn't going to have a traditional
- 42:57Speaker 5: NFL route tree, But if you just find different ways
- 43:00Speaker 5: to get him the ball in his hands and let
- 43:02Speaker 5: him run with it, whether it's quick hitters, over the middle,
- 43:05Speaker 5: scheme touches, vertical routes, whatever, he'll be able to do
- 43:08Speaker 5: those types of things. But I don't think that he's
- 43:10Speaker 5: going to be one of those guys that's gonna have
- 43:11Speaker 5: a ton of branches.
- 43:13Speaker 4: So I would applaud that because I think there's a
- 43:15Speaker 4: similarity between the two different guys that you chose. Obviously
- 43:19Speaker 4: Deebo too with the South Carolina connection that might be
- 43:22Speaker 4: part of I like him, I like Lagette, and I'm
- 43:26Speaker 4: gonna trust Evan here. I'm gonna put my trust in
- 43:28Speaker 4: Evan about the route running because I kind of saw
- 43:30Speaker 4: a guy that kind of looked like he was rounding
- 43:33Speaker 4: things off a little bit. But I'll trust that you
- 43:34Speaker 4: watched a lot more than I did, Yeah, be an
- 43:38Speaker 4: interesting guy, interesting prospect, and I alway did well, you know,
- 43:42Speaker 4: testing and all that.
- 43:43Speaker 7: You know.
- 43:43Speaker 5: I don't like his route running just okay, yeah.
- 43:45Speaker 4: I thought he was kind of rounded some stuff.
- 43:47Speaker 5: Yeah, no, no, he's not a route runner.
- 43:51Speaker 4: To feel better about it now.
- 43:52Speaker 5: That's why I compared him to Debo, because I think
- 43:54Speaker 5: he if he's in the right role and he's used correctly,
- 43:57Speaker 5: he's such a game breaker before and after the catch
- 44:00Speaker 5: with his speed, and there's only so many guys that
- 44:03Speaker 5: at two hundred and twenty one pounds run a four
- 44:05Speaker 5: to three nine like that doesn't just grow on trees.
- 44:07Speaker 5: So I really like him, but I love I also
- 44:10Speaker 5: really like the technicians in this class. I think all
- 44:12Speaker 5: of them are really really good options. On day two,
- 44:16Speaker 5: Lad McConkie, Lad mccaucky, Roman Wilson, Ricky piersall the two
- 44:22Speaker 5: Washington kids, Polk McMillan, all those guys run routes. They
- 44:26Speaker 5: all have PhDs in route running. They're all awesome at
- 44:29Speaker 5: the top of the route. They all you have all
- 44:32Speaker 5: that technical savvy that you want. I really like McMillan.
- 44:35Speaker 5: A little bit later, if you're looking for like sixty eight,
- 44:38Speaker 5: you know down the line here, I comped him to
- 44:40Speaker 5: like a more explosive Jacobe Myers, you know, Jacobey Myers,
- 44:43Speaker 5: but with a four four seven, like that type of player.
- 44:46Speaker 6: So you didn't mention Troy Franklin. What are your thoughts
- 44:48Speaker 6: on him?
- 44:49Speaker 5: So, Troy Franklin, I liked initially his combine was rough
- 44:52Speaker 5: and he ran a four to four to one, which
- 44:54Speaker 5: was good speed, but it's not elite elite speed. My
- 44:57Speaker 5: com for him has been Jerry Judy. I just think
- 44:59Speaker 5: that he he's got much better route running skill than
- 45:02Speaker 5: people give him credit for, but play strength and being
- 45:04Speaker 5: able to finish through contact is going to be a concern.
- 45:08Speaker 5: I think that there's a chance that he's got Jerry
- 45:10Speaker 5: Judy like drop issues at the next level because of that.
- 45:13Speaker 5: So that's why I think he's going to be able
- 45:15Speaker 5: to separate. I don't think that's going to be an
- 45:17Speaker 5: issue for him. It's going to be finishing the catches
- 45:20Speaker 5: that's going to be more of the problem.
- 45:21Speaker 4: Who else you Well, I just want to know if
- 45:23Speaker 4: Evan could give us the summation to Keon Coleman his favorite.
- 45:27Speaker 5: So here's the thing about Keon Colemanuh, Keon Coleman has
- 45:33Speaker 5: a lot of red flags, and then there's also a
- 45:36Speaker 5: very very high ceiling if he does reach the potential,
- 45:39Speaker 5: he doesn't separate, he doesn't run well. His contested catchability
- 45:44Speaker 5: is supposed to be his calling card. He only caught
- 45:46Speaker 5: thirty three percent of his contested car charge targets last year.
- 45:50Speaker 5: For comparison, Romadu's day caught seventy five percent of his
- 45:53Speaker 5: contested targets. That's a mouthful. I can't say that. So
- 45:58Speaker 5: you're telling me that this is like a jump ball
- 45:59Speaker 5: artist who doesn't even really catch jump balls all that well,
- 46:02Speaker 5: So what's the upside to Keyon Coleman is that he
- 46:06Speaker 5: plays a lot faster than what he timed in the
- 46:09Speaker 5: forty yard dash. So this is a guy that if
- 46:12Speaker 5: you like the in game tracking data, you know, the
- 46:17Speaker 5: GPS stuff, he's gonna run twenty plus miles an hour
- 46:21Speaker 5: at six three two twenty five and that's gonna attract
- 46:24Speaker 5: people to him. So I think at best, he's like
- 46:27Speaker 5: maybe like an Alan Robinson type, you know that wins
- 46:30Speaker 5: with that size and that ability to pick up yards
- 46:32Speaker 5: after the catch and you know, can test the grabs
- 46:35Speaker 5: things like that. At worst, I see a lot of
- 46:38Speaker 5: nik Kill Harry. I do like I see a lot
- 46:40Speaker 5: of the same type of vibes as nik Kill Harry,
- 46:42Speaker 5: where he's you know, just a plotter, like he's just
- 46:45Speaker 5: not particularly.
- 46:46Speaker 4: I saw him, you know, a couple of times watching
- 46:48Speaker 4: Florida State games, and I was not overly impressed with
- 46:51Speaker 4: anything but his size, his sheer size. So I kind
- 46:55Speaker 4: of agree a couple of late guys, and I'm surprised,
- 46:57Speaker 4: you know, mister bloodlines, right, I have just have other guys.
- 47:03Speaker 4: I just think in terms of the whole double dip, right,
- 47:05Speaker 4: we talk about the Patriots going to try to get
- 47:07Speaker 4: somebody maybe in the second round, you know, or the
- 47:11Speaker 4: third round, and then maybe you double dips. So I think,
- 47:14Speaker 4: you know, Jermaine Burton had him pretty inconsistent. You know,
- 47:18Speaker 4: the production's not I don't think where you would think
- 47:21Speaker 4: for a program like Alabama, but you know these I
- 47:23Speaker 4: think the second of two I wouldn't be too upset about,
- 47:26Speaker 4: you know, maybe rolling the dice, you know, Brendan Rice being.
- 47:28Speaker 5: Love Jermaine Burton. I think Jermaine Burton, if good job, Paul,
- 47:33Speaker 5: if Jamaine Burton wasn't a head case, there's something there's
- 47:36Speaker 5: something going on, then he might be a top fifty
- 47:38Speaker 5: pick in this draft, just simply based off of talent.
- 47:41Speaker 5: He's a very good vertical threat. I comped him to
- 47:44Speaker 5: Darius Slayton with the Giants, like he has that explosive
- 47:46Speaker 5: down the field ability. But he's got a thicker frame,
- 47:49Speaker 5: so he's not like Troy Franklin who's like a little
- 47:51Speaker 5: bit frailer. So he's got a lot going for him
- 47:54Speaker 5: physically and just in terms of the profile, but he
- 47:58Speaker 5: he has some offfields.
- 48:00Speaker 6: I had Ricky Purse all we talked about earlier. Love
- 48:02Speaker 6: him on real hands, which is key. I just don't
- 48:05Speaker 6: know if he's the receiver the Patriots need right now.
- 48:07Speaker 6: He's more of a slot guy. Yeah, But then also
- 48:09Speaker 6: had tes Walker. We mentioned him in a couple episodes.
- 48:12Speaker 6: I just don't think there's any downside bringing him in
- 48:14Speaker 6: with a potential quarterback he's familiar with.
- 48:16Speaker 3: So yeah, I was kind of him. Yeah. I didn't
- 48:19Speaker 3: really like him a first either, And I think the
- 48:20Speaker 3: only reason I've kind of like opened up to him
- 48:22Speaker 3: is just preally his speed and his connection with Drake May.
- 48:25Speaker 3: If Drake May were to be here, But two other
- 48:27Speaker 3: names I feel like we got to mention Malchi, Corley
- 48:30Speaker 3: Good and Jevon Baker, two guys that Baker have kind
- 48:33Speaker 3: of come on to lately, but not the fastest guy,
- 48:35Speaker 3: but inside outside And you know you said it tisays
- 48:38Speaker 3: like someone like Brendan Rice, like has some outside potential.
- 48:41Speaker 3: And I think when you're getting down Patriots have a
- 48:43Speaker 3: lot of interior receivers right now and as you get
- 48:45Speaker 3: later into these picks like who can play on the outside,
- 48:47Speaker 3: who can get off press, who's got speed enough to
- 48:49Speaker 3: draw some coverage with him. So I don't know if
- 48:52Speaker 3: those two guys are And Baker has some inside outside flexibility,
- 48:55Speaker 3: but you know, Corley is again kind of a poor
- 48:56Speaker 3: man's These are the guys I'm kind of drawn to.
- 48:58Speaker 3: Laviiscus Chanal. You know, you're got those debo vibes a
- 49:01Speaker 3: little bit because.
- 49:01Speaker 4: You know, you know, you and I were the only
- 49:03Speaker 4: two fans.
- 49:05Speaker 5: Viscus is my comp for Coraley because Coraley his average
- 49:11Speaker 5: air yards per target was five point five yards.
- 49:15Speaker 3: This is this is that guy that.
- 49:16Speaker 5: Caught like a million screens, a million slants, a million
- 49:20Speaker 5: crossing routes, you know, over the middle of the field,
- 49:22Speaker 5: and he's running back you know, with the football in
- 49:24Speaker 5: his hands, so just let him run with it. I
- 49:26Speaker 5: like the Baker shout a good, good player. I think
- 49:28Speaker 5: you know, Alabama transfer goes to UCF for more opportunities.
- 49:32Speaker 5: He's a good player. There's one other guy, oh, Johnny
- 49:35Speaker 5: Wilson from Florida State is the is the last guy
- 49:37Speaker 5: that in my top twenty that I don't think that
- 49:40Speaker 5: we mentioned by name other than you know, BTJ and
- 49:43Speaker 5: some of the other guys that are going to go
- 49:44Speaker 5: at the top of the draft. But Johnny Wilson is
- 49:46Speaker 5: an interesting player. Six six, two thirty monster, but runs routes,
- 49:51Speaker 5: you know, can run routes pretty well. He's not he's
- 49:53Speaker 5: not stiff, He's not you know. Kelvin Benjamin, you know,
- 49:55Speaker 5: is a guy that can get in and out of
- 49:57Speaker 5: a break and run some routes and do some different things.
- 49:59Speaker 5: So this is a that this is one of the
- 50:02Speaker 5: best receiver classes we're ever gonna say. It's it's honestly
- 50:05Speaker 5: that good. It's top heavy, it's it's deep. Like there's
- 50:08Speaker 5: gonna be a Puka Nakua in this class. I'm sure
- 50:10Speaker 5: that's gonna get taken in the fourth or fifth round.
- 50:12Speaker 5: That ends up being a stud to it's an impressive class.
- 50:16Speaker 3: We can just tell by how much we're talking about
- 50:17Speaker 3: anybody there, anybody else, Paul. We didn't mention tease anybody,
- 50:20Speaker 3: we did. I mean, I feel like we covered so
- 50:21Speaker 3: much and that you know, speaks to your point, Evan,
- 50:23Speaker 3: how deep of a class this is. It's a huge
- 50:25Speaker 3: need for the Patriots. Paul and I've been going crazy
- 50:27Speaker 3: for about five years now that they haven't hit on
- 50:28Speaker 3: one of these guys. It's time they need to at
- 50:30Speaker 3: least take one of them, maybe do the double dip,
- 50:32Speaker 3: as Paul said, so plenty there to digest there at
- 50:35Speaker 3: the weapons positions, all big needs. All right, that's gonna
- 50:38Speaker 3: do it for this edition of Patriots Draft Countdown. Only
- 50:41Speaker 3: two more shows left. We're gonna wrap things up with
- 50:43Speaker 3: a live show there on April twenty, fourth, full hour
- 50:46Speaker 3: long edition. I don't know what, Maybe we'll have some
- 50:48Speaker 3: more news by then, but certainly a lot of build
- 50:51Speaker 3: up here to the twenty twenty fourth draft.
- 50:53Speaker 2: It's a hugely important.
- 50:53Speaker 3: One for the Patriots. So just two more weeks, two
- 50:55Speaker 3: more episodes to go. We'll see you next time.
