Alabama pays tribute to fallen wildland firefighter Sydney Kathryne Watson, 27, who died battling the Knowles Fire in Colorado. A devoted conservationist from Corner, Alabama, she dedicated her life to protecting forests after studying wildlife biology. Alongside two colleagues, she perished while serving with a Helitack crew. Governor Kay Ivey has ordered flags flown at half-staff on July 7, the day of her interment, honoring her sacrifice and the bravery of all wildland firefighters risking their lives to safeguard our natural world.
