- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life, with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia, Judice.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler. Hi, guys, it is Jen
- 0:13Speaker 2: Fessler here with another episode of Dirty Rush, and today
- 0:17Speaker 2: we are going to answer the question that we are
- 0:21Speaker 2: constantly asked, what is it like to live in a
- 0:25Speaker 2: sorority house? And to help us with that, we are
- 0:28Speaker 2: bringing in two of our producers, Heather and Amy and
- 0:31Speaker 2: our friend Nicki.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Hi, guys, Hi, Hi, Hi, Hi Jen.
- 0:36Speaker 4: I agree with you. That is the number one question
- 0:38Speaker 4: people ask them of what is it like living in
- 0:41Speaker 4: a sorority?
- 0:42Speaker 2: That is our number one question? Is absolutely true, So
- 0:46Speaker 2: let's answer the question as best as we can. You, guys, Amy,
- 0:50Speaker 2: I mean, tell me some of your thoughts here.
- 0:52Speaker 4: So I think we had NICKI and I were in
- 0:55Speaker 4: the sorority together. So I think we probably had one
- 0:57Speaker 4: hundred people living in How many people live in your house?
- 1:01Speaker 4: You know, not that many one time.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Not as many. So it was you know, like I'm
- 1:05Speaker 2: sure like you guys, it was divided up. So I
- 1:07Speaker 2: lived in my house my junior year, but I that
- 1:12Speaker 2: was when so I had pledged lates. I had transferred
- 1:14Speaker 2: to University of Texas. So I was living with girls
- 1:18Speaker 2: that were younger than me, and I would say there
- 1:19Speaker 2: was probably fifty of us living in the house.
- 1:23Speaker 4: So and NICKI can attest to this. One of the
- 1:25Speaker 4: like things that people really noticed about our story was
- 1:28Speaker 4: that it was mostly two girl rooms because.
- 1:31Speaker 3: A lotled porch.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Right, but a lot of people are turned off by
- 1:35Speaker 4: that pledge porch, don't you think, Nikki?
- 1:38Speaker 3: It was? It was awful.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I don't even know what is a pledge porch? Wait,
- 1:41Speaker 2: you guys, what's a pledge porch? I don't remember.
- 1:42Speaker 3: It's like eight beds or Piey's was worse. Pie Fy's
- 1:45Speaker 3: was like one day room. We had what six.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Or six people, and you get you get sort of
- 1:50Speaker 4: like your own little alcove, and then you get a closet.
- 1:53Speaker 4: But the thing people don't like about other stories is
- 1:57Speaker 4: that you keep your stuff in one room and then
- 2:01Speaker 4: like thirty girls sleep in what is like a I
- 2:05Speaker 4: don't even know. We didn't have them, so I don't.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Know if it's called such a bunk at camp.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Yes, and it's all beds. I think it's always ever.
- 2:11Speaker 5: Handmaid's Tale, Did you guys watch Handmaid's Tail? It was
- 2:15Speaker 5: literally look like Handmaid's Tale. That's just that's the vision
- 2:18Speaker 5: right there.
- 2:19Speaker 4: You know a lot of stories have it where you
- 2:22Speaker 4: sleep in this room and it's all beds, bunk beds,
- 2:25Speaker 4: and you're sleeping in bunk beds and it's dark. I
- 2:29Speaker 4: think they keep it kind of cold in there, so
- 2:30Speaker 4: it's only for sleeping, no desks.
- 2:33Speaker 2: You guys had never heard of this. Did other houses
- 2:36Speaker 2: have that on your campus?
- 2:37Speaker 5: Yes, PIPI had like twenty of them, twenty beds in
- 2:40Speaker 5: one room.
- 2:42Speaker 4: And I think people also sort of sometimes like, look,
- 2:45Speaker 4: this is a you know, a lucky thing to be
- 2:49Speaker 4: able to say, but there were people that would go
- 2:51Speaker 4: down to two top houses and they would pick the
- 2:54Speaker 4: one that they didn't have to sleep in that.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Are you sure?
- 2:57Speaker 5: I don't remember even touring the play what we were
- 3:01Speaker 5: not in the same sorority, because I don't remember that
- 3:03Speaker 5: at all.
- 3:04Speaker 4: No, we didn't have it. People didn't do PIPEI because
- 3:07Speaker 4: of yeah, we.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Didn't tour rooms, Amy jury.
- 3:11Speaker 4: You do, Yes, you do. We showed off our two
- 3:14Speaker 4: girlrooms because it was a real way to get people
- 3:16Speaker 4: into our sorority.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Right, let me tell you, it was a real way
- 3:19Speaker 5: not to have gotten me in that sorority.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Okay, I've never recovered.
- 3:23Speaker 5: The communal showers with everybody's hair is like I've never
- 3:29Speaker 5: recovered from It's my biggest OCD triggering thing is the hair.
- 3:34Speaker 6: Sorry non sorority girl jumping in here for a question
- 3:38Speaker 6: about bathrooms.
- 3:39Speaker 7: I gotta know.
- 3:40Speaker 6: First of all, we're talking about all the girls sleeping
- 3:43Speaker 6: in one bedroom. I have other questions about that bathroom.
- 3:47Speaker 6: Who's on shower duty? How many toilets are in this house?
- 3:52Speaker 4: There's multiple bathrooms, but you'd have like six or seven
- 3:55Speaker 4: toilets just lined up like a public bathroom toilet.
- 3:58Speaker 3: No, you have doors? You had it's doors, yeah, yeah.
- 4:01Speaker 2: We also we had a housekeeper, so do we Yeah, we.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Had many, So you don't. Nobody's cleaning the showers. Nobody's
- 4:08Speaker 4: cleaning the toilets. That's living in the house. But our
- 4:12Speaker 4: showers had individual stalls. Like sometimes I think people picture
- 4:15Speaker 4: it like a locker room or something where you're just
- 4:17Speaker 4: like making next for somebody.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And the shower curtains.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Can I just say that I wasn't picturing it like
- 4:22Speaker 6: a locker room. I was picturing it like a house
- 4:25Speaker 6: with like one toilet per bathroom.
- 4:28Speaker 2: No, but it was our mind was it was like
- 4:31Speaker 2: a house. I mean, we didn't have any there was nobody.
- 4:33Speaker 2: There was fifteen girls congregating in one room in bunk beds.
- 4:37Speaker 2: We each got a room and they were doubles. And
- 4:40Speaker 2: it was actually very nice. I mean I compare it
- 4:43Speaker 2: to like my freshman year when I was in a dorm,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and this was way nicer, more homey. It was a
- 4:50Speaker 2: really pretty house. The food was really good. Yeah yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 2: I mean, and I remember, and there was just a
- 4:57Speaker 2: lot of you know, communal areas and the study room.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It was nice. I didn't. I enjoyed it well.
- 5:03Speaker 4: With your bathroom situation.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Same thing, same thing, like stall stall stall, but nothing
- 5:09Speaker 2: that was like.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Now, what's interesting is we sort of had like glass
- 5:14Speaker 4: between the showers, so you could fuzzy glass so you
- 5:17Speaker 4: could see sort of like if Nicky was next to me,
- 5:20Speaker 4: I would know, I'd be like, hey, nick, like what's
- 5:22Speaker 4: going on. They have since changed it, Niki, and they
- 5:25Speaker 4: made it like marble and you can't see into the
- 5:28Speaker 4: next shower.
- 5:29Speaker 3: I saw it.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Remember we went to a game two years ago and
- 5:32Speaker 5: we went into the house and I remember a lot
- 5:35Speaker 5: of it was still the same thoay, mey. I mean
- 5:37Speaker 5: it was a lipstick on a pig. I mean that
- 5:39Speaker 5: was not a full page one remodel.
- 5:41Speaker 4: So Nicky and I are both fifty. So this is
- 5:43Speaker 4: thirty years ago. And the dressers where you put your
- 5:45Speaker 4: clothes are the same. They have not changed the dressers,
- 5:48Speaker 4: They've not changed the backs of the beds, but they
- 5:51Speaker 4: changed the floors. Oh, the closets exactly the same. So
- 5:55Speaker 4: we had two girls the majority two girls, some four girls,
- 5:59Speaker 4: and then the pledge which I lived on the pledge
- 6:01Speaker 4: porch and I found it fine.
- 6:02Speaker 7: I have more questions about the pledge porch.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Okay, So first of all, we're talking about ten plus
- 6:07Speaker 6: girls all being in there. Is it lights off at
- 6:10Speaker 6: the exact same time every What if you have somebody
- 6:14Speaker 6: on the pledge porch who talks in their sleep? What
- 6:17Speaker 6: if they want to read in their bed? I mean fine,
- 6:21Speaker 6: what if they want to do other things?
- 6:23Speaker 5: Good point, because there were no iPhones or there was
- 6:27Speaker 5: no kindles or anything.
- 6:29Speaker 3: It was books with like a little night light on your.
- 6:32Speaker 7: That would seem annoying.
- 6:34Speaker 4: But I always had a TV. I always had a
- 6:36Speaker 4: TV in a DVD or VCR, whatever it was. That's
- 6:39Speaker 4: back in the you know, nineties, So I would watch
- 6:43Speaker 4: TV and I didn't have headphones.
- 6:45Speaker 2: We didn't have any We didn't have a pledge porch.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I mean, you guys reminded me of Sleepway camp. We
- 6:49Speaker 2: didn't have any of that. But I could tell you
- 6:51Speaker 2: that my daughter in her house, she thanked God because
- 6:55Speaker 2: she almost didn't want to pledge her sorry, because she
- 6:57Speaker 2: was going to have to live in the house and
- 6:59Speaker 2: she'd heard to night stories. We tried to get her
- 7:01Speaker 2: out of it because she has Type on diabetes. Who
- 7:03Speaker 2: tried to pull that card? We couldn't, but she ended
- 7:06Speaker 2: up getting a single. But some of the rooms, like
- 7:08Speaker 2: the triples, they were so tight. There was absolutely nowhere
- 7:13Speaker 2: to put anything. And I remember like being amazed that
- 7:17Speaker 2: these girls could even survive. I can't imagine a pledge porch.
- 7:19Speaker 7: What if you're sick in that pledge porch?
- 7:22Speaker 5: Your shower, Caddy, You're a little shower Caddie.
- 7:25Speaker 4: You know what's so funny? Because Heather, I think we were.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I don't remember who I was talking to about this yesterday,
- 7:31Speaker 4: but I was preparing for this show trying to remember.
- 7:34Speaker 4: It's two things I do not remember, and I'm going
- 7:36Speaker 4: to tell you I don't remember ever getting sick, even
- 7:40Speaker 4: though I was basically living in a petri dish filled
- 7:42Speaker 4: with people. I don't remember ever like throwing up, getting
- 7:45Speaker 4: a cold, nothing, And I truly this is gross. Sorry, guys,
- 7:51Speaker 4: this is gross. I don't remember doing anything other than
- 7:55Speaker 4: number one. Obviously I did because I lived there for
- 7:58Speaker 4: three years. But I have no men of being like
- 8:00Speaker 4: I had to poop next to somebody.
- 8:02Speaker 7: Maybe you did it outside the house.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Well, so that's an interesting point, Nikki. There are two
- 8:07Speaker 4: guest bathrooms in our authorty that were individual and I
- 8:11Speaker 4: do think on Gaily Nicky people went down and like
- 8:15Speaker 4: went in that.
- 8:15Speaker 5: So the one by the little den, that one, and
- 8:18Speaker 5: then where was the where was the other down there's
- 8:21Speaker 5: third floor.
- 8:22Speaker 4: There was one on the third floor down at the
- 8:24Speaker 4: very very end of the gaily hallway, like if you
- 8:26Speaker 4: were at the President's room and one of someone might
- 8:30Speaker 4: have had a weird bathtub. I can't quite remember.
- 8:33Speaker 6: I'm trying to think of all things I've experienced with roommates.
- 8:37Speaker 6: Were you allowed to smoke? Were you allowed to burn?
- 8:41Speaker 1: No?
- 8:42Speaker 4: You probably no. I don't know.
- 8:44Speaker 3: No candles anything.
- 8:46Speaker 2: With my boys, there's definitely no boys.
- 8:49Speaker 6: No candles and no incense and a bunch of young
- 8:53Speaker 6: women all crammed into a space.
- 8:56Speaker 7: How are we making itsell nice in there?
- 8:59Speaker 4: I couldn't say.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Not.
- 9:00Speaker 2: In the bedrooms. We could have boys in the bedrooms.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Yeah, we could have boys in the bedrooms till ten.
- 9:04Speaker 2: O'clock, even in the whatever room in the in your bedroom,
- 9:08Speaker 2: yeah no, but I mean the one with the eighteen beds,
- 9:10Speaker 2: yeah yeahom yeah.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Nobody was doing funny business. I never experienced that. And
- 9:16Speaker 4: the other thing, Nikki is I don't remember people being
- 9:19Speaker 4: naked like people always like and you just stand around naked,
- 9:22Speaker 4: and I'm.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Like, no, no.
- 9:23Speaker 5: I remember getting in the shower really quickly and putting
- 9:26Speaker 5: my towel on and like jumping in and all of
- 9:29Speaker 5: that stuff.
- 9:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 9:30Speaker 5: What I do remember that was interesting, is like I
- 9:32Speaker 5: just think I was actually thinking that, like, how did
- 9:35Speaker 5: we all decide who were we going to be roommates with?
- 9:37Speaker 5: I think the girls were nicer back then. I think
- 9:40Speaker 5: it was just there was not mean girls at least.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I don't remember.
- 9:44Speaker 4: When we were like house manager and it was very easy.
- 9:47Speaker 4: People totally knew who their roommates were going to be,
- 9:49Speaker 4: and then where your room was was based on points,
- 9:52Speaker 4: so obviously the third floor was better than the second floor,
- 9:55Speaker 4: and daily was better than the main two hallways, and
- 9:58Speaker 4: so seniors had more points, so they started to get
- 10:01Speaker 4: the better room.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I remember not my roommate not being happy with me.
- 10:05Speaker 2: We were friends, we picked each other, and I was
- 10:07Speaker 2: a dirty slob and just just horrible.
- 10:11Speaker 6: Okay, this goes to my other question. You said nobody
- 10:14Speaker 6: was cleaning up the bathrooms. Who like, what if you
- 10:18Speaker 6: go in and your roommate has.
- 10:20Speaker 7: Her clothes everywhere or what happens?
- 10:24Speaker 2: Then you fight? I mean, for me, we fought, and
- 10:27Speaker 2: I was really embarrassed by it, and I was just
- 10:31Speaker 2: at the point in my life where I just couldn't
- 10:33Speaker 2: get it together. I just was a slob.
- 10:35Speaker 7: Does the house person do your laundry too?
- 10:38Speaker 4: No? No, no, you have to do.
- 10:40Speaker 6: I mean, you're the website that you didn't have to
- 10:42Speaker 6: clean the bathrooms.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I'm done.
- 10:44Speaker 4: One time Nicky wasn't there. But one time that there
- 10:47Speaker 4: was like a weekend and only a few of us
- 10:49Speaker 4: were there. Everybody went home for some reason and the
- 10:52Speaker 4: furnace exploded and we all thought we were It was
- 10:55Speaker 4: so gnarly, like I remember being like I think like
- 10:58Speaker 4: something really like we're all going to die. But it
- 11:00Speaker 4: was just the furnace. I never had a messy roommate.
- 11:03Speaker 4: I don't think I was messy. Nikki, did you did
- 11:05Speaker 4: you have someone messy?
- 11:07Speaker 3: Well?
- 11:07Speaker 5: I think there was only one or two washer dryers,
- 11:11Speaker 5: And I actually remember having to sit down there.
- 11:14Speaker 4: With quarters, right, I think we had quarters.
- 11:17Speaker 3: They didn't let us use it for free. We did quarters.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yeah, And also we had Alsa units. Do you guys
- 11:25Speaker 4: know what that is?
- 11:26Speaker 5: That was very big Elsa They still have Elpa's at
- 11:28Speaker 5: Container store.
- 11:30Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 4: So they were like in your closet, you'd hang some
- 11:33Speaker 4: of your clothes and then you would have these like
- 11:34Speaker 4: Elsa units, which were like drawers, but they were like
- 11:38Speaker 4: wire and you'd literally get like lines in your underwear.
- 11:41Speaker 4: But whatever, you didn't care. And then we had a dresser.
- 11:44Speaker 4: I mean it was tight, but I don't remember it
- 11:46Speaker 4: being like a problem.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I loved living in the sorority.
- 11:50Speaker 5: And now that I'm you know, obviously divorced and you know,
- 11:54Speaker 5: almost fifty four and spend so much time with my
- 11:57Speaker 5: friends who are also divorced or getting divorced, we all
- 12:02Speaker 5: talk about living together again number one day and having
- 12:06Speaker 5: like a modern version of austrority.
- 12:08Speaker 3: And if you actually it's all over TikTok.
- 12:11Speaker 5: These groups of friends that are buying homes are into communities.
- 12:14Speaker 5: And I have to tell you agree, I loved every
- 12:17Speaker 5: second of it. And when I go on girls trips
- 12:19Speaker 5: with my friends, we share rooms, whereas all the guys
- 12:22Speaker 5: will go on a trip they want their own room.
- 12:24Speaker 2: My friends, I talk about down the road, we're going
- 12:26Speaker 2: to get houses all next to each other in a
- 12:28Speaker 2: tidy little community, and we're going to spend the whole
- 12:31Speaker 2: day we when to meet it drinking and I don't know,
- 12:34Speaker 2: play mob whatever, just live our lives. Yeah, but not
- 12:37Speaker 2: the same room.
- 12:37Speaker 4: No way that I could live in a big house
- 12:40Speaker 4: like a mansion, because these sorties are basically mansions, right,
- 12:44Speaker 4: And it was going to have I was going to
- 12:45Speaker 4: have my room and all my meals would be served,
- 12:48Speaker 4: and I'd have all my friends there, and this giant
- 12:51Speaker 4: TV room and this giant living room and this giant
- 12:54Speaker 4: kitchen and dining room, and I'd have a chef for
- 12:57Speaker 4: all three meals. I'd have someone cleaning every day. All
- 13:01Speaker 4: I have to do is basically like make my bed.
- 13:04Speaker 2: That's called assisted living. My in laws. If you go
- 13:07Speaker 2: down the road, that is the way that there. If
- 13:09Speaker 2: that's what you want, there's a place down the road
- 13:12Speaker 2: called the Bristol I get. Definitely.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Maybe maybe we all live in authroorties when we're twenty,
- 13:17Speaker 4: and then we all live them and again when we're eighty.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I don't know I what it is.
- 13:21Speaker 3: We're gonna do. I talk about it all.
- 13:23Speaker 5: I talked about any other thing we used to do,
- 13:24Speaker 5: because when I was in college, it was the height of.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Beverly Hills nine o two one zero and Melrose Place and.
- 13:30Speaker 2: We would squish on whatever the night is that was
- 13:33Speaker 2: the best, and we would all watch it.
- 13:35Speaker 5: We have our yogurt park, and it was like the
- 13:37Speaker 5: guys knew not to call and it was like such
- 13:40Speaker 5: a fun thing to do.
- 13:42Speaker 2: General Hospital, like during the day you were like one
- 13:44Speaker 2: days of our lives.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Yeah, the amount of gummy bears, gummy worms.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Sour patch kids.
- 13:52Speaker 4: When it was Burrito Bar, everybody lost their minds. They
- 13:56Speaker 4: were so stoked. They were like, it's Burrito Bar and
- 13:58Speaker 4: it basically is just like imagine Chipotle in.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Your right.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Gourmet Chipotle course, and you're just like, what I mean.
- 14:06Speaker 4: I did not appreciate it nearly enough. And we had breakfast.
- 14:09Speaker 4: A lot of sorties don't have breakfast anymore, but we
- 14:12Speaker 4: had like breakfast right and I couldn't. It ended at
- 14:15Speaker 4: nine and I was so tired. I couldn't make it
- 14:17Speaker 4: down in time.
- 14:17Speaker 3: So I was always like there was.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Always stuff there. There was always like cinnamon buns. We
- 14:21Speaker 2: had like a warmer where you could always grab like
- 14:24Speaker 2: if you were if it was too late, like cinnamon buns,
- 14:26Speaker 2: or there was like underneath there was always like granola
- 14:29Speaker 2: or whatever. There was always stuff waiting, all brand cereal.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I remember. I remember we at least I'm older than Amy.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Amy was in the same year as my sister. But
- 14:41Speaker 3: my group of friends, we would do so many pranks to.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Each other, so like we would short sheet the beds,
- 14:46Speaker 5: or we would pour water. What they would like to
- 14:48Speaker 5: do to me is they went around to every hair
- 14:51Speaker 5: brush in the sorority. And I got in bed one
- 14:55Speaker 5: night and the hair was all over my beautiful white sheet.
- 14:58Speaker 5: I literally and then I used to I was really
- 15:01Speaker 5: into these hunter green cowboy half boots like I was
- 15:05Speaker 5: known for it. I wore them and I got dressed
- 15:08Speaker 5: the next morning no thinking, and I put my foot
- 15:11Speaker 5: in it and it was like a puff of hair.
- 15:13Speaker 5: I mean it was like constant jokes to each other.
- 15:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:17Speaker 4: See, we didn't do any of that. I remember just
- 15:21Speaker 4: learning how to put popcorn kernels in a brown lunch
- 15:23Speaker 4: sack and pop it in the microwave and then you
- 15:26Speaker 4: got popcorn and you just put some salt on that
- 15:28Speaker 4: and you'd have a bag of popcorn.
- 15:30Speaker 2: For those shows, someone was always on some kind of
- 15:33Speaker 2: a weird diet. I remember there was always weird stuff
- 15:36Speaker 2: like that going on everybody.
- 15:37Speaker 4: We need to do a whole episode about the weird
- 15:39Speaker 4: diet because.
- 15:40Speaker 5: People were throwing up in our bathrooms a lot. And
- 15:44Speaker 5: I always had the same lunch, which was and they
- 15:46Speaker 5: would tease me.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I come in.
- 15:47Speaker 5: I put broccoli, kidney beans, jon mustard, and bald on
- 15:52Speaker 5: ic vinegar like a psycho.
- 15:53Speaker 3: So that's sad.
- 15:55Speaker 2: There was a lot of that. Then we'd all go
- 15:58Speaker 2: to jazz or Size together. Jazz house was big then.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I don't know if you guys had that bike, but we.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Did not do JAZZI I don't remember anyone working out
- 16:06Speaker 4: whatsoever at all.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Yeah, we do a lot of jazz Size.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I think we did.
- 16:09Speaker 5: People blasted like Sarah McLachlan and Metallica and Pearl Jam
- 16:13Speaker 5: And then we had a roof on the top where
- 16:16Speaker 5: people would lay out and they would like ditch class
- 16:19Speaker 5: and we would all be like frying ourselves from the rooftop.
- 16:22Speaker 3: It was can I say something. I loved every second
- 16:25Speaker 3: of it, absolutely, and.
- 16:27Speaker 5: We were friends with people of different Everyone was friends,
- 16:30Speaker 5: and it didn't matter if you were a senior or
- 16:33Speaker 5: a sophomore.
- 16:34Speaker 4: I would move back in to day if you've got
- 16:37Speaker 4: all those people that I live there with, you, Angie, Natalie,
- 16:42Speaker 4: like pige all our.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Friends, Natalie or Junie.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Today it was the best. I have to say you, guys,
- 16:50Speaker 2: I did not have. Clearly I did not have as
- 16:52Speaker 2: good of experience as you because I would not go
- 16:54Speaker 2: back in today, tomorrow, next week, next year, no way.
- 16:58Speaker 2: And it was great and I loved it, but I
- 17:01Speaker 2: don't know, I mean, I don't know that I'd be
- 17:02Speaker 2: made for that.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Now I hear about people wanting to move out and
- 17:06Speaker 4: they don't want to live their senior year. They're getting
- 17:08Speaker 4: these apartments. I'm like, what are you doing? The sorority
- 17:12Speaker 4: is the greatest invention of all time. It is the
- 17:15Speaker 4: easiest life like you literally did not have to do
- 17:18Speaker 4: anything if.
- 17:20Speaker 5: You're a girl's girl, right, Like, I think for some
- 17:22Speaker 5: people it would be very sensory, overloads, super triggering to
- 17:27Speaker 5: be around so many girls, and girls can be tough,
- 17:30Speaker 5: so I think not everybody would subscribe to that kind
- 17:34Speaker 5: of a living situation.
- 17:35Speaker 3: It could be overwhelming.
- 17:37Speaker 2: It's not funny like you, guys. I don't remember like
- 17:39Speaker 2: a lot of the girls fighting though. I don't remember
- 17:41Speaker 2: fighting with anyone except I don't either. That was such
- 17:43Speaker 2: a pig. But I really don't.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Are you friends with her still, Jennifer?
- 17:47Speaker 2: No, I know, I haven't talked to her in years.
- 17:49Speaker 2: But we were. We were again, they were younger than
- 17:52Speaker 2: I was, right, but it was a requirement to live
- 17:54Speaker 2: in the house, so you transferred, right. So I was
- 17:58Speaker 2: living with girls that were younger. And she's a very
- 18:00Speaker 2: nice girl. I remember, like, very very smart, very studious,
- 18:03Speaker 2: very together, and I was just a hot mess. And
- 18:06Speaker 2: so but we were still. I mean, we loved each other.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I remember that we laughed a lot, but it was
- 18:13Speaker 2: not I mean, we're not. We don't know each other now.
- 18:15Speaker 5: It's funny like Amy, I would say, Amy, probably more
- 18:19Speaker 5: than anybody has kept in touch with many many people.
- 18:23Speaker 3: In that chapter.
- 18:24Speaker 9: I think that if you gave me one hour, I
- 18:27Speaker 9: could probably reach one hundred kappas.
- 18:32Speaker 7: I think in one hour.
- 18:33Speaker 9: If you gave me one hour and I'd have to
- 18:34Speaker 9: do anything else but just get a text trail going,
- 18:38Speaker 9: I think I could get a hundred.
- 18:39Speaker 2: That should be an episode. We should actually watch that.
- 18:43Speaker 2: How we should set the timer for one hour and
- 18:45Speaker 2: see what happens.
- 18:46Speaker 9: I'm probably of fifty in my phone right now. I
- 18:50Speaker 9: just really thrived in that environment. I just you know,
- 18:56Speaker 9: I think, I mean, look, it wasn't all unicorns and rainbows.
- 18:58Speaker 9: There's little things that like some boy makes you cry,
- 19:01Speaker 9: or you know, somebody gets mad that you kiss their
- 19:05Speaker 9: ex boyfriend or whatever that can happen.
- 19:07Speaker 3: In every chapter.
- 19:08Speaker 5: I think what I've taught my kids too is like
- 19:10Speaker 5: for not every chapter is the best chapter, right, and
- 19:14Speaker 5: life is long. Like I would say, for me, high
- 19:16Speaker 5: school was my peaking moment. For sure, college was good,
- 19:20Speaker 5: but I would say high school for me is kind
- 19:23Speaker 5: of like your experience, Amy.
- 19:25Speaker 3: I mean I liked college.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like what you're describing, Amy. I got
- 19:28Speaker 2: at like Sleepowoy Camp. That was my home away from homegrowning.
- 19:31Speaker 9: Yeah, everybody has their thing. Well, Jen, I know you
- 19:34Speaker 9: have a lot of people to talk to, but I
- 19:35Speaker 9: think we definitely need to like do part one, two, three,
- 19:38Speaker 9: and four because I feel like people are fascinated by
- 19:42Speaker 9: the whole thing.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, and we're gonna have to take an
- 19:47Speaker 2: hour and just see how many of your sisters.
- 19:49Speaker 9: Oh, well, i'd be I want to throw a party,
- 19:52Speaker 9: so this can be a challenge where I can invite
- 19:55Speaker 9: one hundred kappas to a party and see if I.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Come to it so far hour and then we'll do it.
- 20:00Speaker 2: We'll do a podcast live live.
- 20:02Speaker 10: I love that idea.
- 20:04Speaker 3: It was so funny.
- 20:05Speaker 2: You guys, well, thank you for sharing. I appreciate you both.
- 20:10Speaker 5: And Jen, you want to live in our sorority with
- 20:12Speaker 5: us in a few years were really fun.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Nope, I am unlike you guys. I am not interested
- 20:17Speaker 2: in going back to a sorority house. I had a blast,
- 20:19Speaker 2: I loved it. I just know I can't share a room.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I could barely share room with my f and husband,
- 20:24Speaker 2: So no, there'll be none of that.
- 20:25Speaker 5: By the way, one last note, can you imagine a
- 20:27Speaker 5: soarty house today with like the bow to the modern
- 20:30Speaker 5: swarty house, like the bow Ties and the manicurist at
- 20:33Speaker 5: the house and people with the I mean, it would
- 20:35Speaker 5: be a whole different thing.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I can't because my daughter graduated two years ago, and
- 20:40Speaker 2: so it was very different than what I had experienced.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Having said that, it was definitely her best year of college.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Amy, I have one memory now because when I talk
- 20:49Speaker 5: to them, but this is so now, I'm remembering, Oh
- 20:54Speaker 5: my god, this is horrible.
- 20:55Speaker 3: So I was living one year with I was living
- 20:58Speaker 3: with Susan. I was living with Don and Tracy.
- 21:02Speaker 9: Okay, so that would be like a four girl Gaily
- 21:05Speaker 9: got it, or but like one.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Of the better rooms, okay.
- 21:08Speaker 5: And all of a sudden, I was like, I think
- 21:12Speaker 5: I had the first yeast infection I'd ever had, and
- 21:15Speaker 5: I did not.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Know what it was, and I literally thought I was dying.
- 21:19Speaker 5: When I tell you the laughter with them with me
- 21:22Speaker 5: and them calling my mom and laughing they had to
- 21:25Speaker 5: take me to urgent care, and the jokes about my
- 21:27Speaker 5: east infection.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Oh, Nikki, are you making bread right now?
- 21:31Speaker 5: Do you want some bread for dinner? That's my one
- 21:33Speaker 5: thing I remember that where they did that, that was crazy.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, everybody's there to help.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Everybody's there to help.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Love you guys. Bye, okay, you guys. So now joining us,
- 22:00Speaker 2: we have Emma, Candice and Caitlin, and these ladies all
- 22:06Speaker 2: live in the same house and one of them, Emma,
- 22:10Speaker 2: is the house manager. So, you guys, our listeners are
- 22:14Speaker 2: dying to hear about the experience that you're having. Maybe
- 22:17Speaker 2: we could start with you, Emma, what is it like
- 22:19Speaker 2: to be a house manager? Is it a ball? It
- 22:23Speaker 2: feels to me like it would be a mixed bag. Sometimes,
- 22:26Speaker 2: you know, really fun. These are your friends. Sometimes maybe
- 22:29Speaker 2: harder because you are also there to enforce the rules.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Tell us a little bit about that.
- 22:34Speaker 11: Yeah, it's definitely a hectic job. I feel like we've
- 22:37Speaker 11: kind of got a lot going on. It's a big house.
- 22:40Speaker 11: At the end of the day, the girls are all
- 22:41Speaker 11: my good friends, and I'm lucky enough to live in
- 22:43Speaker 11: a house where we actually like each other, so there's
- 22:46Speaker 11: not too much drama. But we are also college students,
- 22:50Speaker 11: so there's a lot of alcohol and boys sneaking in
- 22:55Speaker 11: and people maybe not following the rules. So like, yes,
- 22:58Speaker 11: it's great in terms of like cattiness that doesn't quite
- 23:01Speaker 11: exist in our own house, but there is a lot
- 23:06Speaker 11: of Hey, maybe don't puke on our carpets and that
- 23:10Speaker 11: kind of stuff.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Why well, Emma, why did you decide that you wanted
- 23:15Speaker 2: to be the house manager.
- 23:17Speaker 11: Honestly, our house was kind of ugly, and I knew
- 23:20Speaker 11: that I could maybe work to renovate some of it.
- 23:24Speaker 11: So actually this past year I got a budget of
- 23:26Speaker 11: about sixty five thousand dollars and we renovated our entire
- 23:29Speaker 11: downstairs get out. Yes, so that primarily just because it
- 23:34Speaker 11: was ugly and I wanted it to look better. But
- 23:36Speaker 11: in the meantime, I've kind of come to enjoy the
- 23:39Speaker 11: actual like management role.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Really, Okay, that's so cool. So okay, what kinde of
- 23:46Speaker 2: house manager is Emma handis?
- 23:51Speaker 8: I would say that she is very good at her job.
- 23:55Speaker 8: I would also say that she and I kind of
- 23:58Speaker 8: co manage a lot of things, and we are definitely
- 24:01Speaker 8: the most vocal voices in our group. Me just because
- 24:06Speaker 8: when we do have a renovated house and things are
- 24:08Speaker 8: so nice, you do have to remind people of certain rules.
- 24:11Speaker 12: And in our chapter, we have some issues.
- 24:15Speaker 8: We've had people throw up in the sinks, We've had
- 24:18Speaker 8: people throw up on carpets and couches, We've had people
- 24:24Speaker 8: have their friends sleep in the fire escape and there
- 24:28Speaker 8: was this whole room or going around that we had
- 24:29Speaker 8: like some sort of squatter. So we have had a
- 24:32Speaker 8: lot of things happen that we're definitely against the rules.
- 24:35Speaker 8: But I would say that Emma's really good at her job.
- 24:39Speaker 2: What is the most fun thing having the keys?
- 24:43Speaker 11: Yeah, so I have like a big, huge thing of keys.
- 24:46Speaker 11: It has keys to every single door in the house,
- 24:48Speaker 11: the basement, the attic, all the things. I feel like
- 24:50Speaker 11: it's most fun because whenever she goes down, like I'm
- 24:54Speaker 11: the first to know, just because me or like our president,
- 24:57Speaker 11: because people you will usually text me like, hey, I
- 25:00Speaker 11: don't know if you noticed, but there's yack in the drains,
- 25:03Speaker 11: or I don't know if you knew, but there's someone
- 25:06Speaker 11: smoking meth on our porch.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Okay, I don't know what's going on with ladies, with
- 25:10Speaker 2: your sorority. I'm getting a little concerned. I don't know
- 25:14Speaker 2: if I should talk to you. Emma's the house manager.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Is there a mother? There is there somebody. I guess
- 25:19Speaker 2: we have a house mother. You do yes so much
- 25:23Speaker 2: with the meth ladies.
- 25:25Speaker 3: It wasn't us.
- 25:26Speaker 10: It was a homeless person.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I'm very glad to hear that. Caitlin. What do you
- 25:32Speaker 2: love about living in the house.
- 25:35Speaker 13: I love that there's never a dull moment, As you've
- 25:37Speaker 13: already started to hear, there's always math, lots going on
- 25:41Speaker 13: exactly exactly. You really never know what you're gonna find
- 25:45Speaker 13: when you walk outside of our sorority house or walk inside.
- 25:49Speaker 13: I also like that we have sixty five closets at
- 25:53Speaker 13: all times, and there's so many people you can go
- 25:55Speaker 13: and talk to for different things, and it's been so
- 25:58Speaker 13: much fun.
- 25:59Speaker 10: But I'm all so excited to get out and not
- 26:02Speaker 10: have to deal with the chaos.
- 26:04Speaker 2: So how is it? How is your How is your
- 26:06Speaker 2: house formated? Like for me when I lived in my house,
- 26:08Speaker 2: it was they were just two to a room period.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Do you guys have what's your situation? We? Do you
- 26:14Speaker 2: have singles? Do you have triples?
- 26:16Speaker 13: We have singles. We have a ten girl room. Actually
- 26:20Speaker 13: Candice and I have two out of the three singles.
- 26:24Speaker 13: The third one belongs to the president. But we have
- 26:27Speaker 13: rooms that have ten girls in them. Eight What is
- 26:29Speaker 13: that called the porch?
- 26:32Speaker 2: Okay? So yeah, I was just I we didn't have
- 26:34Speaker 2: that in my house. Do the girls like living there.
- 26:38Speaker 13: So actually a lot of times the girls end up
- 26:41Speaker 13: living there because they have the least amount of house
- 26:43Speaker 13: points and they're not really choosing to live there, And
- 26:46Speaker 13: a lot of times they're not even really friends with
- 26:48Speaker 13: the other people who are picked in that pick to
- 26:51Speaker 13: be in that room with them. But our year, actually
- 26:55Speaker 13: the girls who got chosen to be in that room
- 26:58Speaker 13: are sophomore freshmen, are sophomore fall semester. Actually opted to
- 27:03Speaker 13: be in there again their spring semester, even though there
- 27:07Speaker 13: were so many empty rooms, just because of how much
- 27:09Speaker 13: I loved it and how much they became such a
- 27:12Speaker 13: tight knit friend group.
- 27:13Speaker 10: So people really good.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I love that. That's very cool. So all right, so
- 27:18Speaker 2: tell me, I'm gonna say, Candice, Okay, tell me for you.
- 27:22Speaker 2: What is the best and worst thing about living in
- 27:24Speaker 2: the house.
- 27:25Speaker 8: I would say best part, I agree with Caitlin, getting
- 27:30Speaker 8: to be close to everyone. Everyone is borrowing closed for
- 27:32Speaker 8: a game day or to go out, and it's very
- 27:35Speaker 8: like a great sense of community. I would say the
- 27:38Speaker 8: worst thing is a lot of people. Obviously it's a
- 27:42Speaker 8: very shared space and a lot of people don't have
- 27:47Speaker 8: I don't want to say, like the decency to be
- 27:49Speaker 8: respectful to others, but there's a lot of people who
- 27:51Speaker 8: that might not be the first thing at the top
- 27:53Speaker 8: of their head, and so there's obviously messes throw up
- 27:58Speaker 8: in the same thing we mentioned earlier, but also in
- 28:01Speaker 8: the spring when the house was at half capacity because
- 28:04Speaker 8: a lot of girls go abroad, people would pick up
- 28:09Speaker 8: secondary rooms. So during house picks, you could say you
- 28:13Speaker 8: were in a double and like live with another girl,
- 28:15Speaker 8: but you could also put your name on a room,
- 28:17Speaker 8: and people were using those rooms as like sex rooms,
- 28:23Speaker 8: and so each room had like a secondary room that
- 28:28Speaker 8: if they wanted to, their roommate could go there.
- 28:30Speaker 10: And Caitlyn can tell more about the story.
- 28:32Speaker 8: But we also had an issue with like a downstairs
- 28:35Speaker 8: bathroom breaking just because people were using that for different purposes.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I mean, you guys, I am coming back as either Emma,
- 28:47Speaker 2: Candice or Caitlin and living in that house because it
- 28:51Speaker 2: sounds like way more fun than I had at the
- 28:54Speaker 2: University of Texas in nineteen eighty nine. So math sex,
- 28:59Speaker 2: you had your own sex room, all right, So anyway,
- 29:02Speaker 2: but Caitlyn, okay, so Kenda said you could tell us
- 29:05Speaker 2: a little bit more about that.
- 29:08Speaker 10: Yeah, in addition to having sex rooms.
- 29:10Speaker 13: People also are president, not this current term, but past
- 29:15Speaker 13: presidents have used their rooms to sell drugs. Out of
- 29:19Speaker 13: what is happening, I don't really know, And it's really
- 29:23Speaker 13: surprising because you would think we live in a fraternity
- 29:26Speaker 13: like with these kinds of stories, But the girls who
- 29:29Speaker 13: do these things are actually like very there are friends,
- 29:31Speaker 13: so it's not like it's some crazy, like one off
- 29:35Speaker 13: in our sorority. It's just people know they can get
- 29:39Speaker 13: away with things. They get caught up in college in general,
- 29:42Speaker 13: and they know that our house mom doesn't care that
- 29:46Speaker 13: much and is not that great at her job, so
- 29:48Speaker 13: they get away with a lot.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Because you're just already known as like sort of the party.
- 29:52Speaker 13: Girls, a kind of, but not particularly more than any
- 29:57Speaker 13: other house. We're definitely not known as the drug house
- 30:00Speaker 13: compared to other sororities, although as I've said, we do
- 30:05Speaker 13: see drugs.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Emma, this might be a little hard for you
- 30:09Speaker 2: to manage.
- 30:10Speaker 3: No, I mean I.
- 30:11Speaker 11: Feel like, I mean, okay, the meth was a separate
- 30:15Speaker 11: situation that was like a homeless dude who was like
- 30:17Speaker 11: sitting on our porch and he was sitting crisscross apple
- 30:20Speaker 11: sauce with this like Fedora on and he's sitting there
- 30:23Speaker 11: with like tinfoil actively doing meth and he's like, I'm
- 30:26Speaker 11: gonna shower you guys. I want to wash you guys.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Crazy shit. So, like there's stuff like that, but I
- 30:32Speaker 3: don't know.
- 30:33Speaker 11: I feel like drinking is probably the main thing that
- 30:35Speaker 11: I see, just because people are off like in the house,
- 30:38Speaker 11: yacking everywhere and stuff like that. But I haven't had
- 30:42Speaker 11: to sit anyone down and talk about their drug problem
- 30:44Speaker 11: yet yet.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Wait, Candice tell us about something called the letter.
- 30:50Speaker 8: So I was just recalling when we had our on
- 30:54Speaker 8: housed visitor. He actually left us a letter and and
- 31:00Speaker 8: some of like included people's names in the letter. So
- 31:04Speaker 8: what Emma's saying about him saying I want to shower
- 31:08Speaker 8: you or whatever he was saying. He actually left us
- 31:11Speaker 8: a little bit of a gift that Emma actually kept
- 31:14Speaker 8: to herself, did not share with anyone, and she let
- 31:18Speaker 8: her roommate find it and then the roommate sent it
- 31:21Speaker 8: into the group me. But it was like this letter, Emma,
- 31:24Speaker 8: do you want to share more?
- 31:25Speaker 11: Yeah, So after this whole incident, I called the police. Meanwhile,
- 31:28Speaker 11: I'm like fully blacked out. It's like three in the morning,
- 31:31Speaker 11: I've come home from a night out and I have
- 31:33Speaker 11: to call the cops and be like hey, and of
- 31:35Speaker 11: course the cop like leaves and takes the guy with them,
- 31:37Speaker 11: and she's like, have fun, but not too much fun
- 31:39Speaker 11: because clearly I'm drunk.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 31:41Speaker 11: So the next day I come back and there's a
- 31:43Speaker 11: letter at the front door and anything that's addressed to
- 31:45Speaker 11: our sorority. I open it up. And so I opened
- 31:48Speaker 11: it up and it's this written out letter girls' names
- 31:50Speaker 11: in our house.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Is like I need like ten.
- 31:53Speaker 11: Million dollars to get to Puerto Rico. Like just gibberish,
- 31:57Speaker 11: all this gibberish, but I knew we're in a house
- 32:00Speaker 11: of dramatic twenty year old girls. Like I was like,
- 32:03Speaker 11: someone's gonna freak out. I'm just gonna keep this to myself.
- 32:06Speaker 11: I put in a plastic bag. I was like, if
- 32:07Speaker 11: he ever comes back, it's evidence, like whatever. My roommate
- 32:10Speaker 11: found it and didn't consult me, took a photo of
- 32:13Speaker 11: it and send it to a group chat, and all
- 32:15Speaker 11: of a sudden, everyone knows that I'm like shit, and
- 32:17Speaker 11: it had been like months since I had Like I
- 32:19Speaker 11: detext story one and be like hey, like it's Okay,
- 32:21Speaker 11: it was months ago, like he's not coming back.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Don't worry.
- 32:23Speaker 11: But then like ay had their thing, So.
- 32:26Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 32:27Speaker 2: All right, Okay, let's just for a moment move off
- 32:29Speaker 2: of the meth smoking, crazy homeless lunatic. Tell me a
- 32:35Speaker 2: little bit about like what's fun that I don't know,
- 32:37Speaker 2: Like for us at night, and we had some women
- 32:41Speaker 2: on just now that were talking about the olden days,
- 32:43Speaker 2: like the days I come from, but like sitting around
- 32:44Speaker 2: at night and we had like common areas and just
- 32:47Speaker 2: you know, everybody was obsessed or like for me, we
- 32:50Speaker 2: love soap operas. I don't even know if you know
- 32:51Speaker 2: what that is at this point, but like during the
- 32:53Speaker 2: day we'd all like be together watching or Beverly Hills
- 32:56Speaker 2: nine or two one Oho or whatever it was. Do
- 32:57Speaker 2: you guys have that Do you have like where we're
- 33:00Speaker 2: going to just like congregate and is it do you
- 33:02Speaker 2: have that feel to it?
- 33:04Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 33:04Speaker 11: We actually have a TV room and people watch. I
- 33:09Speaker 11: think it was the summer I turned pretty there was
- 33:11Speaker 11: a whole watch party every week. I think on Wednesday nights,
- 33:13Speaker 11: everyone would go sit and watch what was it Dancing.
- 33:16Speaker 10: With the Stars.
- 33:18Speaker 11: People will sit there and sometimes it's a random show
- 33:20Speaker 11: playing and people will just join. I've had so many
- 33:23Speaker 11: conversations where I'm just like, I walk by after dinner
- 33:26Speaker 11: and I'm like, oh, I really love that movie and
- 33:28Speaker 11: I'll just sit and it's the most random people that
- 33:30Speaker 11: I normally wouldn't though, right, And yeah, I wouldn't normally
- 33:34Speaker 11: like sit and spend hours with them on end, usually
- 33:36Speaker 11: the girls. But it's really nice to get to know people.
- 33:39Speaker 11: And then after I'm like, oh, now, like when I
- 33:40Speaker 11: see you in the halls, I know you like so much.
- 33:43Speaker 11: And then Candice, you were talking about something on porch.
- 33:47Speaker 8: Yes, we also have this outdoor porch area that leads
- 33:50Speaker 8: into our backyard, and we have a lot of people
- 33:53Speaker 8: in our house that like to play guitar and are
- 33:55Speaker 8: really good at singing, so everyone love that. Yes, everyone
- 33:58Speaker 8: will go outside, and our house carries sound very well,
- 34:02Speaker 8: so you can hear people outside singing and playing instruments
- 34:05Speaker 8: and it's so cool. It's so fun, and we definitely
- 34:08Speaker 8: have great sisterhood within the house despite all of the craziness.
- 34:12Speaker 8: But I feel like the craziness is part of having
- 34:15Speaker 8: a great house culture and having great sisterhood.
- 34:17Speaker 10: So you got to give to get a little listen.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I am so excited for you guys that you are
- 34:23Speaker 2: having this great experience. I'm also a little worried for
- 34:25Speaker 2: the three of you, but I'm going to leave that
- 34:27Speaker 2: to your very capable mothers. But listen, I want you
- 34:32Speaker 2: to enjoy every minute, but I should be careful. Please
- 34:35Speaker 2: we will well, no more okay, no more mess smoking
- 34:39Speaker 2: homeless people on the porch. All right, guys. So next
- 34:58Speaker 2: we have Emily joining us. Hi, Emily, Hi, Jennifer, how
- 35:02Speaker 2: are you Hi. I'm doing very well. This is a
- 35:06Speaker 2: very very fun episode for me. We are talking about
- 35:09Speaker 2: living in your sorority house. I lived about ten million
- 35:13Speaker 2: years ago, and we've had some ladies here telling us
- 35:16Speaker 2: some wild stories. But tell me a little bit about
- 35:20Speaker 2: your experience.
- 35:21Speaker 14: I went to a very big university and Greek life
- 35:26Speaker 14: was kind of like relatively big.
- 35:29Speaker 10: I mean definitely can't compare anything to like the South
- 35:31Speaker 10: or the Midwest. But we had a lot of houses
- 35:35Speaker 10: on the road.
- 35:35Speaker 14: It was like one straight shot of all sorority houses,
- 35:39Speaker 14: and we basically like every house mom besides ours was.
- 35:44Speaker 10: Like, I don't know, sixty five years old, and.
- 35:48Speaker 14: Our house mom was a ripe twenty five years old,
- 35:52Speaker 14: So she was basically like another member exactly, and she
- 36:00Speaker 14: like not only act that like it, but like let
- 36:02Speaker 14: us act our like to our full potential. And it
- 36:06Speaker 14: was like so much so that there was in this
- 36:08Speaker 14: I heard from other girls like there was like kind
- 36:10Speaker 14: of like a a thing to get her kicked off
- 36:14Speaker 14: because she was too chill and too fun and.
- 36:16Speaker 10: Like would let us do really?
- 36:18Speaker 14: I mean nothing like insane, but like other house moms
- 36:22Speaker 14: wouldn't like girls like even like guys weren't even allowed
- 36:24Speaker 14: to the front door, you know, and our house mom
- 36:26Speaker 14: like didn't care who you was in the house at
- 36:29Speaker 14: any time, right, But yeah, she was amazing.
- 36:33Speaker 10: I still think about her all the day all the time.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Well what year did you live in the house?
- 36:37Speaker 14: I lived in sophomore year, the year that like most
- 36:40Speaker 14: people live in at my school.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Okay, And like how many girls were there?
- 36:44Speaker 14: I think they're probably like, oh god, like maybe like
- 36:48Speaker 14: fifty or sixty. I think I could be like that's
- 36:50Speaker 14: kind of like a high number. But we had a
- 36:53Speaker 14: huge house.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Was it a nice house? Like? Was it was it comfortable?
- 36:56Speaker 10: Was it?
- 36:57Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 36:58Speaker 2: Terms of what were there, like what was set up
- 37:00Speaker 2: with their singles? Doubles, triples.
- 37:02Speaker 14: How that was like literally everything It kind of just
- 37:06Speaker 14: felt like like it was like a It was like
- 37:08Speaker 14: kind of like an insane asylum, like you would walk in. No,
- 37:10Speaker 14: it was amazing, it was beautiful, but it was just
- 37:12Speaker 14: like there were like no rules kind of so like
- 37:17Speaker 14: we like you'd walk in this beautiful courtyard, like the
- 37:21Speaker 14: actual house is like in a gorgeous area and a
- 37:25Speaker 14: very beautiful house, and then the rooms were like you
- 37:29Speaker 14: could have anything from like a single to like I
- 37:32Speaker 14: had a like a quad and my mom used to
- 37:35Speaker 14: call it like the house in the air because Mike
- 37:37Speaker 14: I would like wake up and my head would like
- 37:39Speaker 14: bang against the ceiling because that's like how crazy the
- 37:43Speaker 14: bunk bed situation was.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Would you change that? Looking back, like, I know that
- 37:47Speaker 2: that's probably you probably dreaded it. But then some people
- 37:50Speaker 2: come out of that and they're like that was the
- 37:51Speaker 2: best situation I could have had.
- 37:53Speaker 10: Yeah, I feel like.
- 37:54Speaker 14: In the moment, even in the moment, I knew it
- 37:56Speaker 14: was one of those things where I was like, hey,
- 37:57Speaker 14: like this is the most uncomfortable I've ever been, but
- 37:59Speaker 14: all so like the happiest, Like I love that. Yeah,
- 38:04Speaker 14: I mean, like I would like come home drunk and
- 38:06Speaker 14: like nearly crack my head open trying to like climb
- 38:09Speaker 14: up my bed.
- 38:10Speaker 2: But did you fight? Did fight with the girls in
- 38:13Speaker 2: your room?
- 38:14Speaker 14: No?
- 38:14Speaker 10: There was never ever fighting.
- 38:16Speaker 14: That's something that I feel like a lot of people
- 38:18Speaker 14: that weren't in Greek life would always ask me like, oh,
- 38:21Speaker 14: have you fought with the girls?
- 38:23Speaker 10: Are you catty? Like what's kind of like the vibe?
- 38:26Speaker 10: And yeah, I was always like, oh my gosh, like.
- 38:29Speaker 14: Never, I feel like there's I mean, there's you put
- 38:31Speaker 14: like sea girls in a house. There's it's like impossible
- 38:33Speaker 14: to not have like zero like any drama.
- 38:35Speaker 2: But no, I was telling these guests before that with me,
- 38:39Speaker 2: I had a double and my roommate just hated me
- 38:41Speaker 2: because I was such a slot because yeah, and she
- 38:45Speaker 2: couldn't and I understand looking back now why she right.
- 38:48Speaker 10: But I mean I think you were just all pigs.
- 38:52Speaker 10: I think it was just like like honestly, to be completely.
- 38:55Speaker 14: Honest, like I feel like I see things all the
- 38:57Speaker 14: time of like oh, these like clean girl houses and
- 38:59Speaker 14: they have their chefs, and like we had that, but
- 39:01Speaker 14: we were just like a bunch of like twenty year
- 39:04Speaker 14: olds just like I.
- 39:06Speaker 10: Don't even know, like who could be more to yes, exactly,
- 39:10Speaker 10: you would. You would have fit right in, Like you
- 39:12Speaker 10: would wake up on like I don't even know, like
- 39:14Speaker 10: a Saturday or a Sunday after.
- 39:15Speaker 2: A night out, those sheets on the bed.
- 39:18Speaker 10: Yeah, someone puked in the hallway, you know what I mean.
- 39:22Speaker 14: Like it was one of those things where it was like,
- 39:24Speaker 14: oh my god, someone like definitely mixed gatorade.
- 39:26Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 39:27Speaker 14: We had this like like fountain drink machine and we
- 39:30Speaker 14: called it the mixy machine, and it was always like you.
- 39:34Speaker 10: Knew someone cuked, like what machine they had used?
- 39:38Speaker 1: It was really.
- 39:40Speaker 10: Yeah, there was like yeah, you can still you can
- 39:42Speaker 10: still smell some of it.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Thank you, miss Emily. All Right, guys, so next we're
- 39:47Speaker 2: going to talk to Mary. Mary as a very interesting
- 39:52Speaker 2: viewpoint on living in the house because she lived in
- 39:55Speaker 2: her house during COVID.
- 39:56Speaker 12: Hi Mary, Hi Jen, Thanks for having me on, Thank you.
- 40:00Speaker 2: For joining us. Tell us what it was like, and
- 40:02Speaker 2: I honestly, I mean, my daughter couldn't even start school
- 40:05Speaker 2: because she was an incoming freshman and they shut it down.
- 40:10Speaker 2: So I'm I'm trying to picture they even even allowing
- 40:13Speaker 2: you to live in a house together during COVID.
- 40:16Speaker 12: Yeah, I think it was kind of the plan.
- 40:18Speaker 1: When the school year started, you know, we collected all
- 40:21Speaker 1: the points, got assigned the room before.
- 40:24Speaker 12: COVID, and then it hit.
- 40:26Speaker 1: I went to a school in Colorado, and essentially we
- 40:30Speaker 1: were all allowed to come back. And then as soon
- 40:32Speaker 1: as we were back and moved in, then we got
- 40:34Speaker 1: the rules in place where there was a city mandate lockdown,
- 40:39Speaker 1: then there was a state mandate lockdown, and then there
- 40:42Speaker 1: was a school lockdown, and then there was a sorority
- 40:46Speaker 1: lockdown where fifty percent of the girls in my sorority
- 40:50Speaker 1: got COVID and we had a an anex house that
- 40:55Speaker 1: is where.
- 40:57Speaker 12: You're like banished to yeah, and you couldn't leave.
- 41:02Speaker 1: There was a balcony and I wasn't a part of
- 41:05Speaker 1: that group, but it was just like a sick house
- 41:11Speaker 1: where everyone was just living on top of each other
- 41:13Speaker 1: for two weeks and you couldn't go back into the
- 41:15Speaker 1: main house to get any of your items.
- 41:18Speaker 12: People would have to bring them to the door.
- 41:21Speaker 2: That's horrible.
- 41:23Speaker 1: So then there was a period of time where my
- 41:26Speaker 1: sorority gave everyone in the house the option was to
- 41:29Speaker 1: either lock down in the house because then we had
- 41:31Speaker 1: to shut down, not only the annex, but the main house,
- 41:35Speaker 1: or you had to leave for two weeks, but you weren't.
- 41:39Speaker 1: If you lived out of state, you weren't allowed to
- 41:41Speaker 1: fly home, and so you had to find another option.
- 41:45Speaker 1: So a couple of me and my girlfriends drove to
- 41:48Speaker 1: Arizona and stayed at her house in Arizona for two
- 41:51Speaker 1: weeks because her parents weren't there.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Well, you have anything good to say about your experience
- 41:57Speaker 2: your house.
- 41:59Speaker 1: That is how I became close with twenty five girls,
- 42:04Speaker 1: and they it definitely some people kind of got lost
- 42:09Speaker 1: in the mix, but I could not be closer to
- 42:12Speaker 1: the girls I'm with, and it's because we lived on
- 42:15Speaker 1: top of each other.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that is so are you still you still are
- 42:19Speaker 2: like that?
- 42:19Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 42:20Speaker 12: Our group chat is still up and at them it was.
- 42:24Speaker 1: It was definitely a hard period of time because it
- 42:27Speaker 1: was sixty five girls living on top of each other,
- 42:31Speaker 1: right like, and it was no other year was like
- 42:34Speaker 1: that in the past, Like everyone would go to class,
- 42:37Speaker 1: or you would maybe have lunch together, maybe have dinner together.
- 42:40Speaker 1: But we had every single meal together in that house.
- 42:45Speaker 2: And were you guys? You have online classes time, so.
- 42:49Speaker 1: No one wanted to take their classes in their rooms
- 42:51Speaker 1: because you spent too much time in your room. So
- 42:53Speaker 1: we had long dining tables which you could never get
- 42:57Speaker 1: a seat at. And then we have a basement which
- 43:01Speaker 1: you could also barely get a seat at. Because it
- 43:04Speaker 1: was sixty five girls.
- 43:06Speaker 2: And what was Tell me like one thing about it
- 43:08Speaker 2: that you remember that was actually really fun.
- 43:11Speaker 12: We did movie nights, movie nights, We had game nights.
- 43:15Speaker 1: We played this game called One Night Ultimate werewolf light
- 43:18Speaker 1: candles ordering food.
- 43:22Speaker 12: There was a ton of memories.
- 43:24Speaker 1: We would sneak alcohol in pre game, really hard pre game.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Where was the game game?
- 43:32Speaker 1: Oh, there was.
- 43:33Speaker 12: Periods of time where we were allowed to leave the house.
- 43:36Speaker 12: It was rare, you know, in between all the lockdowns.
- 43:40Speaker 1: But when we were allowed to leave the house, then
- 43:42Speaker 1: we would go party at the frat houses and then
- 43:45Speaker 1: get in trouble and then you know, get locked down.
- 43:48Speaker 1: I would definitely say that everyone lost their marbles. And
- 43:53Speaker 1: then it was nice because we sealed that year in
- 43:56Speaker 1: a really pretty pink bow with a trip to Cabo
- 44:00Speaker 1: and everything was kind of lifted. So it was it
- 44:02Speaker 1: was a tough year mentally for everyone, but it ended
- 44:06Speaker 1: up creating really long lasting friendships.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Would you change it, like if you could if you
- 44:11Speaker 2: could go back and live in the house not during COVID, Like,
- 44:15Speaker 2: would you switch your experience?
- 44:17Speaker 1: You think, No, I wouldn't switch my experience, but I
- 44:22Speaker 1: would not live in the house again. It was it
- 44:26Speaker 1: was really tough, I think, just because we were all
- 44:29Speaker 1: living on top of each other and just it being
- 44:31Speaker 1: that period of time that it was.
- 44:34Speaker 12: Yeah, it was just it was just challenging to live
- 44:37Speaker 12: with so many girls all at once.
- 44:39Speaker 2: So Mary, it was challenging to live in my house
- 44:41Speaker 2: with a husband and two kids. So I can only
- 44:44Speaker 2: imagine what it was like to live with that many girls.
- 44:46Speaker 2: It's just it had to be rough. Yeah, but it
- 44:50Speaker 2: sounds like it was sort of worth it. I mean,
- 44:52Speaker 2: you have these relationships now that that have endured.
- 44:55Speaker 12: Yeah, it was. It was for sure worth it.
- 44:57Speaker 1: I think it was just a It's also just like
- 45:00Speaker 1: a hard period of time to become a woman, because
- 45:02Speaker 1: everyone wants to grow their education, grow their status, become independent,
- 45:10Speaker 1: and so everyone's kind of like it's like a battle
- 45:12Speaker 1: between everyone and then it turns out Okay.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Do you think that happens not just during COVID but
- 45:17Speaker 2: in houses in general, I would assume.
- 45:20Speaker 1: So I remember talking with my little before she moved
- 45:24Speaker 1: into the house, and I told her blatantly that it
- 45:27Speaker 1: was just it was difficult for me, but it was
- 45:31Speaker 1: the best challenge I put myself through.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Interesting. Yeah, that's so great. Well, I mean, I'm so
- 45:38Speaker 2: happy you look back on it and look back on
- 45:40Speaker 2: it in a positive way. I'm sure there are I
- 45:42Speaker 2: would think there would be some of your sisters that
- 45:45Speaker 2: maybe don't look back in it with such fond memories.
- 45:48Speaker 2: But I'm glad that you have all of these people now,
- 45:50Speaker 2: these lifelong friends that you you know, what you got
- 45:54Speaker 2: you went through the battle with.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Yeah, of course we have some of our We have
- 45:59Speaker 1: some great story worries that happened, like one of them
- 46:02Speaker 1: being that a bat came into our house and it
- 46:08Speaker 1: was living in our house for two weeks because girls
- 46:11Speaker 1: saw it, and then no one could catch it, and
- 46:13Speaker 1: then it was rediscovered hanging in.
- 46:15Speaker 12: Someone's room, and so then the two girls had to
- 46:18Speaker 12: get tetnis shots.
- 46:19Speaker 14: Ah.
- 46:22Speaker 12: Gross, absolutely disgusting.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Yeah that's scary. Yeah, all right, my friends. So I
- 46:32Speaker 2: love talking to those young ladies and older ladies about
- 46:36Speaker 2: their experiences. I mean, it was such an It was
- 46:40Speaker 2: like this little tiny nugget in my life living in
- 46:44Speaker 2: the A five house at the University of Texas, and
- 46:48Speaker 2: I have really fond memories of it, and I have
- 46:51Speaker 2: memories that are not so fond, But I hope all
- 46:55Speaker 2: the girls feel like this. I would certainly not change
- 46:58Speaker 2: it because I mentioned my daughter tried everything to get
- 47:01Speaker 2: out of living in her sorority house at the University
- 47:04Speaker 2: of Delaware. She couldn't get out of it. It was
- 47:08Speaker 2: her best year, so to be continued. Thanks you guys
- 47:13Speaker 2: so much for listening, and we have a really exciting
- 47:16Speaker 2: episode coming next, so stay tuned.
