- 0:05Speaker 1: I think this is crazy. The inside scoop of FT
- 0:07Speaker 1: senior insider Ken Rosenthal. We're talking about Terrek's Schoogle trade
- 0:11Speaker 1: options on June tewid Ken, and it's real.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I mean, the team is way back.
- 0:15Speaker 1: You covered an in depth on the latest Fair Territory episode,
- 0:18Speaker 1: So I'm going to push it forward.
- 0:19Speaker 2: And dive into potential team options.
- 0:22Speaker 1: And I know the classic answer is anyone that's a
- 0:25Speaker 1: contender would want him. But what are your initial thoughts
- 0:28Speaker 1: about some teams that pop up that you think could
- 0:30Speaker 1: be legit contenders. I would say maybe steering towards a
- 0:33Speaker 1: team that has a true need for a starter that
- 0:37Speaker 1: would pitch a playoff game. I know everyone could use him,
- 0:39Speaker 1: but you know what I'm saying, like someone who's like, hey,
- 0:41Speaker 1: I really need a starter to make this team complete.
- 0:44Speaker 3: First off, this is all predicated on him coming back
- 0:47Speaker 3: and coming back healthy and showing he is the effective Trek.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Schoogle that we all know.
- 0:52Speaker 3: So what I wrote yesterday just to preview this a
- 0:56Speaker 3: little bit or kind of explain the background, was that
- 1:00Speaker 3: the Tigers, now fifteen games under five hundred, are all
- 1:03Speaker 3: but buried. Now, maybe they had go out a run
- 1:06Speaker 3: here once they get Schooble back and Labor Torres back,
- 1:09Speaker 3: and the American League is weak.
- 1:10Speaker 4: But fifteen games, sixteen.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Games under five hundred, no team in this current playoff
- 1:16Speaker 3: format has come back from that to make the playoffs.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Okay, so that's where it starts. Now.
- 1:21Speaker 3: The teams with the biggest needs right now, in my opinion,
- 1:25Speaker 3: would be the Cubs because of the injuries, with Boyd
- 1:29Speaker 3: coming back, but Horton still out, Steals still out, the
- 1:32Speaker 3: Blue Jays who have an entire rotation on the IL,
- 1:35Speaker 3: and the Padres who have dealt with rotation concerns all
- 1:39Speaker 3: season and really done. Okay, all things considered, I would
- 1:43Speaker 3: say those are the three teams.
- 1:44Speaker 4: With the biggest needs. Now.
- 1:46Speaker 3: You cannot rule out the Dodgers, and you cannot rule
- 1:49Speaker 3: out the Yankees, you cannot rule out the Phillies, all
- 1:51Speaker 3: of these big market teams with seemingly better rotations. But
- 1:55Speaker 3: again it's trek scuble and when it comes to the Dodgers.
- 2:00Speaker 3: One thing to keep in mind, payroll restrictions are coming.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Most likely increased payroll restrictions in one form or another
- 2:08Speaker 3: in the next CBA, whether it's a salary cap or
- 2:11Speaker 3: whether there are simply adjustments to the current system that
- 2:14Speaker 3: most likely will limit the Dodgers in a greater way
- 2:18Speaker 3: than before. With that said, then maybe the Dodgers are
- 2:22Speaker 3: incentivized to go out and do something big one more
- 2:26Speaker 3: time before the restrictions come in. Not saying it's going
- 2:29Speaker 3: to happen, I'm just saying that's the landscape.
- 2:32Speaker 5: The question is always going to be, okay, well, who
- 2:34Speaker 5: has the pieces to get Terrek's scuble? Is it fair
- 2:37Speaker 5: to say that everybody has the pieces to get terrek
- 2:40Speaker 5: schouble that you put on this list, not just oh, well,
- 2:44Speaker 5: you know they're kind of devoid in there. Everybody has
- 2:47Speaker 5: enough to get Trek's scruble. But you're mentioning teams that
- 2:51Speaker 5: are willing to give up enough.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Well, he's a rental, that's one thing.
- 2:57Speaker 3: He's also going to cost at the deadline round ten
- 3:00Speaker 3: million dollars.
- 3:01Speaker 4: In payroll edition.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So there aren't many teams or a lot of teams
- 3:06Speaker 3: that are going to be willing to give up top
- 3:08Speaker 3: prospects and take on that money. They might be one, two, three,
- 3:11Speaker 3: or four, who knows, but that's the situation that these teams.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Would be dealing with.
- 3:17Speaker 3: So a team like the Brewers has the number one
- 3:20Speaker 3: farm system in the game according to most analysts, and
- 3:24Speaker 3: yet this is not a team that generally likes to
- 3:26Speaker 3: mortgage any part of its future or take on ten
- 3:29Speaker 3: million dollars at the deadline.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Might they do it, sure, they might. Might Tampa Bay
- 3:33Speaker 4: do it? Yes, But when it comes to which teams.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Have the prospects, and do all teams have the prospects,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I would assume Eric the answer to that is, yes,
- 3:44Speaker 3: all teams can do it, but it's a question of willingness.
- 3:47Speaker 4: And it's a question of depth too. I've mentioned this a.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Few times with regard to the Brewers. They have depth
- 3:53Speaker 3: on the left side of their infield going forward like
- 3:57Speaker 3: few other teams. They've got a shortstop and third basement
- 3:59Speaker 3: ready to come up pretty much right now, Cooper Pratt
- 4:02Speaker 3: and Jet Williams. They've got guys behind them Jesus My Day,
- 4:06Speaker 3: Louis Pana, Andrew Fisher. That's just the left side of
- 4:10Speaker 3: their infield. So they're in a really good spot if
- 4:14Speaker 3: they want to do it now. A team like the
- 4:16Speaker 3: Blue Jays perhaps might only have one top one hundred
- 4:20Speaker 3: guy that they're willing to move that will make sense
- 4:23Speaker 3: in a trade like this, so they would have perhaps
- 4:25Speaker 3: more of a disadvantage.
- 4:27Speaker 4: And I'm not saying the Blue Jay system isn't good enough.
- 4:29Speaker 2: It is.
- 4:29Speaker 4: I'm just giving a hypothetical there. So we'll see.
- 4:32Speaker 3: And obviously, number one, he's got to pitch and come
- 4:37Speaker 3: back and pitch well enough.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Number Two, the Tigers have to.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Understand where they are, and I imagine that they will,
- 4:44Speaker 3: and then we'll see what happens.
- 4:47Speaker 6: Ken, thanks for prenching the blue Jays. There's a troll
- 4:49Speaker 6: in the chat. They keep saying we don't talk about
- 4:51Speaker 6: the blue Jays, So thank you for mentioning the blue
- 4:53Speaker 6: Jays there, because I was going to ask you about
- 4:55Speaker 6: the blue jaysus to shut that person up in the chat.
- 4:57Speaker 6: But is this on Scott harro So, is this is
- 5:00Speaker 6: Scott Harris big move time? Is Scott Harris being judged
- 5:03Speaker 6: on what he does with Trek schougbl because we all
- 5:06Speaker 6: said in the offseason they needed to go out and
- 5:08Speaker 6: make some moves after the way they collapsed. And yes,
- 5:11Speaker 6: they came close to winning the DS and beating the Marrors,
- 5:13Speaker 6: but they didn't hit the way they needed to. And
- 5:15Speaker 6: a lot of Tigers fans that i've talked to have said, Man,
- 5:18Speaker 6: Scott Harris, he just didn't get it done this offseason.
- 5:21Speaker 6: So is this Trek Schoogle move a chance to make
- 5:24Speaker 6: a decision of Scott Harris to move on or not
- 5:27Speaker 6: the the biggest one maybe in his tenure.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Well, I would say that for sure.
- 5:32Speaker 3: And anytime you trade a player of this caliber, even though,
- 5:35Speaker 3: as I mentioned, there is the rental aspect, there's the
- 5:39Speaker 3: money aspect, and then there's also the fact that the
- 5:43Speaker 3: return will be diminished by the fact that the team
- 5:45Speaker 3: that gets him cannot make him a qualifying offer at
- 5:48Speaker 3: the end of the season, so you're not getting a
- 5:49Speaker 3: draft pick on the end of this.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Sure, Scott Harris will be under a lot of scrutiny
- 5:56Speaker 3: if this trade indeed comes to pass. And a lot
- 5:59Speaker 3: of times these trades aren't as fruitful as you would expect,
- 6:02Speaker 3: and a lot of times they work out okay, So yeah,
- 6:07Speaker 3: that's part of how he will be evaluated. But what
- 6:09Speaker 3: Tiger fans are upset about, from what I've gathered, is
- 6:12Speaker 3: just the construction of this team and how it was
- 6:15Speaker 3: put together, and the fact that they still have kind
- 6:19Speaker 3: of the same offensive questions they've held on to certain
- 6:22Speaker 3: young players, maybe too long, the normal things that GM's
- 6:26Speaker 3: presidents of baseball operations get asked about and evaluated on.
- 6:31Speaker 3: So that is the greater question here. Did they do
- 6:34Speaker 3: enough to put a good enough team together? And when
- 6:38Speaker 3: you look at their offense, it's one of the worst
- 6:40Speaker 3: in the league. When you look at their defense, it's
- 6:42Speaker 3: one of the.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Worst in the league.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Now, they will say, and with some justification, of course,
- 6:49Speaker 3: injuries have played a huge part in this. Currently have
- 6:52Speaker 3: fourteen players on the injured list, ten pitchers, and they
- 6:55Speaker 3: were without Kerry Carpenter for a time, they were without
- 6:58Speaker 3: Labor Torres. Still no question injuries are indeed a part
- 7:03Speaker 3: of what has happened to here, but as always, all
- 7:06Speaker 3: teams have them, and that excuse generally goes only so far.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Kratz, I know you love dad jokes. This is not
- 7:15Speaker 2: a joke. Ridges.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Five and one travel power bank is the answer to
- 7:19Speaker 1: all of your messy wires all over the place issues.
- 7:23Speaker 5: Yeah, one hundred percent. I don't need more tube socks.
- 7:26Speaker 5: I need this because somebody is going to use my
- 7:28Speaker 5: phone that I fully charged and then dies halfway through
- 7:31Speaker 5: the softball game that I go to. So this will
- 7:34Speaker 5: lock it in and my friend next to me who
- 7:36Speaker 5: forgot to charge his phone.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Ridge makes life better. They revolutionize the wallet right now.
- 7:42Speaker 1: They're doing it with a portable charger. It solves all
- 7:46Speaker 1: of your issues. So many elite features smag safe wireless charging,
- 7:50Speaker 1: Apple Watch charger, Lightning USBC, every way you need to charge,
- 7:54Speaker 1: all in one premium device. The colors are Swag one
- 7:57Speaker 1: Thing to Pack, five Ways to Power For a limited
- 7:59Speaker 1: time to get up to forty percent off during Ridge's
- 8:01Speaker 1: huge Father's Day sale at Ridge dot com slash foul,
- 8:04Speaker 1: don't miss one of their biggest discounts all year. Just
- 8:06Speaker 1: head to Ridge dot com slash foul and you're all set.
- 8:09Speaker 1: After you purchase the last where you heard about them.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Please support our show and tell them we sent you.
- 8:14Speaker 5: And Scott Harris said that the team is just automatically
- 8:17Speaker 5: going to get better because all the players that are
- 8:19Speaker 5: returning are going to be a year older. But not
- 8:22Speaker 5: to drag Scott Harris down here, but it's just a
- 8:25Speaker 5: quote that was kind of from the offseason. I want
- 8:29Speaker 5: to go to a team that you would put in there,
- 8:30Speaker 5: The Phillies, the Phillies of Zach Wheeler. They have Christopher Sanchez,
- 8:35Speaker 5: if they make a move at Trek scouble. Yes it's
- 8:38Speaker 5: for a year rental, Yes it is obviously going to
- 8:42Speaker 5: bolster any rotation. But is it signifying what we already
- 8:46Speaker 5: know about the Phillies that this is the last two
- 8:50Speaker 5: years whatever window for the Phillies to win this.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Well, when I put them in my column, and I
- 8:57Speaker 3: included them, I included the americ largely because their owner
- 9:01Speaker 3: John Middleton and their president of baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Are among the most competitive at their respective jobs. I
- 9:09Speaker 4: don't know that that is even in dispute.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Those guys like to win, they want to win badly,
- 9:15Speaker 3: and Dobrowski has never been afraid to make the big
- 9:18Speaker 3: move at the deadline or any other time for that matter.
- 9:20Speaker 3: So I don't know that they see it so much
- 9:24Speaker 3: as the window closing as Hey, we've got a good
- 9:27Speaker 3: enough team, let's go for it, let's make this happen.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Now.
- 9:31Speaker 3: If you're a Phillies fan watching this, you're probably saying,
- 9:33Speaker 3: wait a second, The problem with this team is not
- 9:36Speaker 3: the starting rotation. The problem is the offense. And that
- 9:40Speaker 3: is certainly true. Looked up the other day, the Phillies,
- 9:42Speaker 3: I believe were bottom five in a number of offensive categories.
- 9:46Speaker 3: That's shocking when you look at who's on that team.
- 9:49Speaker 3: But at the same time, Dombrowski historically loves pitching. You
- 9:54Speaker 3: would expect that with the players they have on that roster,
- 9:57Speaker 3: they're going to come around offensively, and to a certain
- 10:01Speaker 3: degree with some of those guys it has happened. Marsha
- 10:03Speaker 3: has been really good, Scott has been better, Boom okay.
- 10:07Speaker 3: But ultimately, in the end, if they can get Trek
- 10:12Speaker 3: Skoogle and they can get him at a price they
- 10:14Speaker 3: deem reasonable. And again they have luxury tax issues like
- 10:17Speaker 3: the Dodgers, so you're effectively paying double in salary for
- 10:21Speaker 3: what you will be getting here.
- 10:23Speaker 4: You have to pay the penalty, That's what I'm talking about.
- 10:26Speaker 3: So I don't know if they would actually do it
- 10:29Speaker 3: when they would have other needs, of course, But at
- 10:32Speaker 3: the same time, I just don't rule out Dombrowski and
- 10:35Speaker 3: Middleton in a situation.
- 10:36Speaker 7: Like this, Well, would you, Dobrowski. Dombrowski's not afraid. We
- 10:41Speaker 7: don't know that it's awesome.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Kent Connor Griffin recently has been talked about this, why
- 10:47Speaker 6: do players need a break amongst the one sixty two
- 10:49Speaker 6: because I remember when I was a young player, I
- 10:51Speaker 6: wanted to play every day. You know why, Listen, Connor
- 10:54Speaker 6: Griffin got a bigger contract than I ever got, but
- 10:56Speaker 6: I was playing for not only a contract, but my
- 11:00Speaker 6: teammates and.
- 11:01Speaker 7: Also just the fact I wanted to play. If they
- 11:03Speaker 7: if the.
- 11:03Speaker 6: Team would have come to me and said, hey, you
- 11:05Speaker 6: need to take ten days off because you're getting a
- 11:07Speaker 6: little tired, I said, yeah, watch these next ten games.
- 11:10Speaker 6: How hard I play, they would have never been able
- 11:13Speaker 6: to tell me what is going on at Pittsburgh.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Well, first of all, he seems to definitely have an
- 11:19Speaker 3: issue with his elbow.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I believe it is.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Yes, this is not a phantom il, but this topic
- 11:25Speaker 3: has come up, and AJ It's come up on some
- 11:26Speaker 3: of our FOX meetings with different managers. How in today's game,
- 11:33Speaker 3: unlike when you came up through the minor leagues, when
- 11:35Speaker 3: you did that and when Eric did that, you guys
- 11:38Speaker 3: played every day today.
- 11:40Speaker 4: It's different. First off, those are built in off day
- 11:43Speaker 4: from minor leaguers on Monday.
- 11:44Speaker 3: We know that there's also generally a scheduled off day
- 11:48Speaker 3: for minor leaguers. And I'm talking about position players here.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Often a dhday as well, so they do not get
- 11:56Speaker 3: accustomed to the grind the way you guys did. And
- 11:59Speaker 3: the travel also is different. Remember in the minor leagues
- 12:02Speaker 3: now you play six straight days in one city. It's
- 12:06Speaker 3: not as much of a grind as it was for
- 12:08Speaker 3: you guys and the miners. And it's certainly not as
- 12:10Speaker 3: much of a grind as it is in the major leagues.
- 12:13Speaker 3: So with younger players, and it's not just Griffin, it's
- 12:16Speaker 3: all these guys who come up Weatherhole, mcgonagill, name will
- 12:19Speaker 3: one name any of them, there is certainly a concern that, yeah,
- 12:23Speaker 3: they'll get fatigued because they're not accustomed to playing one
- 12:26Speaker 3: hundred and fifty games in a season and playing it
- 12:29Speaker 3: at the major league level. It's a much different atmosphere
- 12:33Speaker 3: than they came up with. And I've spoken with some
- 12:36Speaker 3: managers who say this has to change. The minor leagues
- 12:39Speaker 3: have to become more like the majors again in order
- 12:42Speaker 3: for these players to be developed properly to be ready
- 12:45Speaker 3: to do what they have to do at the major
- 12:47Speaker 3: league level.
- 12:48Speaker 6: Ken I was just going to say, that's my biggest gripe,
- 12:51Speaker 6: And people ask me about this all the time. Pitching
- 12:53Speaker 6: injuries and position player injuries. We don't teach them how
- 12:56Speaker 6: to play every day because they don't do it at
- 12:59Speaker 6: any point until you to the major leagues. And if
- 13:01Speaker 6: you don't teach pitchers how to pitch every fifth day,
- 13:04Speaker 6: then how are they ever going to get to the
- 13:05Speaker 6: big leagues?
- 13:06Speaker 7: And they pitch once a week.
- 13:07Speaker 6: They pitch once a week in high school, they pitch
- 13:09Speaker 6: once a week in college, they pitch once a week
- 13:11Speaker 6: in the minor leagues, and then they get to the
- 13:12Speaker 6: major leagues and say, hey, you need to pitch every
- 13:14Speaker 6: fifth day. It's never happened before, right, And then you're
- 13:17Speaker 6: talking about the minor league position players. We used to
- 13:19Speaker 6: go two weeks, play every day, have twenty hour bus
- 13:23Speaker 6: rides in between, show up at four o'clock, and whatever
- 13:26Speaker 6: city you want to call it, we'd be in Fort Wayne.
- 13:28Speaker 6: We'd have to drive to Appleton, Wisconsin, twelve hours. After
- 13:31Speaker 6: a night game. You get in at seven, eight in
- 13:34Speaker 6: the morning, ten in the morning, whatever it is, one noon,
- 13:37Speaker 6: take a two hour nap, and guess what you're playing
- 13:39Speaker 6: that night at seven. They don't have any of that anymore,
- 13:41Speaker 6: which is fine. It's all good. I get understand all that.
- 13:43Speaker 6: But if you're going to tell these kids in we
- 13:45Speaker 6: need you to play every day, we got to do
- 13:46Speaker 6: it in the minor leagues. I'm up here dropping my
- 13:49Speaker 6: son off at summer ball and they're saying, hey, there's
- 13:51Speaker 6: some nice bus rides. You get home at four in
- 13:53Speaker 6: the morning, and you have to play that night. I'm like, yeah,
- 13:55Speaker 6: welcome to my major league world. So I agree with
- 13:58Speaker 6: these people that are saying this, because if you want
- 14:00Speaker 6: to teach people how to be major leaguers and pitch
- 14:02Speaker 6: every fifth day or play one hundred and fifty games,
- 14:05Speaker 6: you got to start in.
- 14:05Speaker 7: The minor leagues.
- 14:06Speaker 6: And it's a lack of teams to play for, it's
- 14:09Speaker 6: a lack of players. There's a whole wider range that
- 14:12Speaker 6: we don't have enough time to get into. Well, you
- 14:14Speaker 6: just said it made my heart happy, Ken, So thank.
- 14:15Speaker 4: You, pleasure AJ.
- 14:18Speaker 3: And the flip side of it is, from the team's perspective,
- 14:21Speaker 3: we're trying to condition these guys better, we're trying to
- 14:23Speaker 3: keep them healthy, we're trying to be more mindful of
- 14:27Speaker 3: their physical well being. We all get that, and that
- 14:31Speaker 3: on the surface is a good thing, but as you said,
- 14:35Speaker 3: there are questions being raised by people in the game,
- 14:37Speaker 3: prominent people about whether these guys are being trained properly
- 14:40Speaker 3: and with pitchers. You can even take it a step
- 14:42Speaker 3: further when you are developing them and not having them
- 14:46Speaker 3: throw ninety to one hundred pitches in a game.
- 14:48Speaker 4: How are they going to do that at the major
- 14:50Speaker 4: leagues right away? They're not ready to do that right away.
- 14:53Speaker 3: And again, as you said, it's a discussion that is
- 14:57Speaker 3: a lot broader than what we're doing here and can
- 14:59Speaker 3: be something that we spend an entire show on.
- 15:02Speaker 5: Quite honestly, Ken is the Carmen Maginski thing out in
- 15:06Speaker 5: Pittsburgh with him not wanting to be a reliever or
- 15:09Speaker 5: whatever the words he said is. It's something that is
- 15:13Speaker 5: only unique to baseball that if somebody says I don't
- 15:17Speaker 5: want to play the position or be in the position
- 15:20Speaker 5: that this team is putting me in, that you can't
- 15:23Speaker 5: speak up. You know, people say, Oh, what is this
- 15:25Speaker 5: guy's problem?
- 15:26Speaker 7: Football?
- 15:27Speaker 5: People are like, good for you hold out basketball, Oh
- 15:30Speaker 5: you requested a trade. We love this guy. I'm glad
- 15:33Speaker 5: he's gonna be coming to my city.
- 15:36Speaker 4: I don't know enough about other sports. I don't follow
- 15:38Speaker 4: them closely enough to really have a great opinion on
- 15:41Speaker 4: that with mcginski.
- 15:43Speaker 3: I will give you what I perceive to be the
- 15:45Speaker 3: player's side of this, and I know a lot of
- 15:48Speaker 3: fans are on him and believe he should just do
- 15:50Speaker 3: whatever the team wants.
- 15:52Speaker 4: He most likely believes right now he's better than Bubba Chandler.
- 15:56Speaker 3: He's performed better than Bubba Chandler. And from that, you're
- 16:01Speaker 3: gonna put me in the bullpen. I'm not gonna be
- 16:03Speaker 3: stretched out anymore. I won't be able to go into
- 16:05Speaker 3: the rotation again so easily. And hey, that's money, because
- 16:12Speaker 3: of course starters get paid more than relievers down the line,
- 16:14Speaker 3: and this will ultimately be held against him. That is
- 16:18Speaker 3: an understandable point of view. The other point is, hey,
- 16:22Speaker 3: it's the Pittsburgh Pirates. They're trying to win, and maybe
- 16:25Speaker 3: this is the best way for them to win what
- 16:27Speaker 3: has been their biggest problem, the bullpen. So I do
- 16:31Speaker 3: see both sides of this, and I know it's easy
- 16:34Speaker 3: to dump on the player and say he should just
- 16:36Speaker 3: do whatever the team wants, and ultimately he's going to
- 16:39Speaker 3: do that.
- 16:39Speaker 4: And he was only on the restricted list for one day.
- 16:42Speaker 4: I didn't perceive that to be a very big deal
- 16:44Speaker 4: at all.
- 16:44Speaker 3: But at the same time, if you put yourself in
- 16:49Speaker 3: his shoes, you can at least understand why this is
- 16:53Speaker 3: upsetting to him.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Hey, Ken, last one overall, and on this, I'm sure
- 16:59Speaker 1: you saw how the word went to the team reporter
- 17:03Speaker 1: first Jason Mackie, and then you know, eventually, I guess
- 17:06Speaker 1: the media is going to get to speak with Karmen
- 17:08Speaker 1: about this. The media is pretty ferociously pissed off about this,
- 17:13Speaker 1: So your thoughts as someone who is deep in this scene,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I get why they're upset.
- 17:18Speaker 3: And in a perfect world, he would have been available
- 17:23Speaker 3: to all reporters so they can ask all questions. This
- 17:26Speaker 3: was an orchestrated set up thing and it was only
- 17:29Speaker 3: going to go one way.
- 17:30Speaker 4: It was going to go in.
- 17:31Speaker 3: A way that made the Pirates look good and probably
- 17:33Speaker 3: mcjinski look good.
- 17:35Speaker 4: At the same time. I don't ever believe that it's.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Constructive for reporters to complain when a source call it
- 17:46Speaker 3: the pirates here give a story to another outlet. You'll
- 17:51Speaker 3: never see me complain about an agent or a team
- 17:55Speaker 3: leaking a story to another outlet. It's just nobody wants
- 18:00Speaker 3: to hear it, and that's the.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Way it is.
- 18:01Speaker 3: People have their right to give information to whoever they
- 18:05Speaker 3: want to, so I didn't think it was a great
- 18:07Speaker 3: look for those guys to go public with it.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I do understand their frustration.
- 18:11Speaker 3: We've all been in that position, and it doesn't speak
- 18:13Speaker 3: well of the Pirates that they would do this, just
- 18:16Speaker 3: make them available to everyone, subject him to questions from everyone,
- 18:20Speaker 3: instead of having this team friendly thing happen.
- 18:24Speaker 4: And that's what it was. So I get it. If
- 18:27Speaker 4: I'm a fan, I'm upset. If I'm a reporter, I'm upset.
- 18:30Speaker 3: But I just don't know that publicly complaining about it
- 18:34Speaker 3: is going to be something that people embrace. Most fans,
- 18:38Speaker 3: from my experience, don't want to hear from reporters and
- 18:41Speaker 3: their sides of these things. They just want the information.
- 18:44Speaker 3: They just want to see how it gets out there
- 18:46Speaker 3: or what gets out there. So that was my view
- 18:49Speaker 3: of it. I understand those guys being upset, but at
- 18:51Speaker 3: the same time, the Pirates can do whatever the heck
- 18:54Speaker 3: they want to do, and then these guys can write
- 18:56Speaker 3: whatever the heck they want to write too.
- 18:59Speaker 7: Nice and just so just so I know this, when Majinski,
- 19:02Speaker 7: how do you say.
- 19:03Speaker 6: Itski Maginski is on Team Poland, in the next w
- 19:07Speaker 6: b C.
- 19:08Speaker 7: He's a starter. I just want to make sure that
- 19:09Speaker 7: we have.
- 19:09Speaker 6: A miss Maginski we Robleski's all right.
- 19:13Speaker 7: We've got a good we got a good rotation. Can't start. Yeah,
- 19:16Speaker 7: we're doing all right.
- 19:17Speaker 4: How about the manager Prazinski?
- 19:19Speaker 7: Oh cut, but manager slash d h R. You kidding me?
- 19:22Speaker 7: You might need a bath.
- 19:26Speaker 8: Now.
- 19:27Speaker 2: He doesn't qualify. He's not a ski. You have to
- 19:29Speaker 2: have ski at the end of the name.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Otherwise everybody's Polish.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I know that schooble Ski.
- 19:37Speaker 1: All right, great, well, Ken, we've gotten to that point
- 19:40Speaker 1: where thank you, appreciate it.
- 19:41Speaker 2: We'll talk to you later.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Thanks guys.
- 19:44Speaker 1: All right, Ken Rosenthal back on Thursday, and yes it's June.
- 19:48Speaker 1: It's okay. Ask trade questions. I saw some in here.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I saw, you know, people ask about a number of teams.
- 19:53Speaker 1: We had a pretty set agenda we wanted to get
- 19:55Speaker 1: to today just being straightforward. The good news is every
- 19:58Speaker 1: Thursday you can ask questions live at twelve thirty Eastern,
- 20:01Speaker 1: So lunch break, whatever it is, throw a question Ken's way.
- 20:05Speaker 2: We'll be right back.
- 20:07Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 20:08Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 20:10Speaker 7: That's what he said.
- 20:11Speaker 1: That's what he said, Hey, a few notable guests in
- 20:16Speaker 1: the past week on FT. So let's start with Will
- 20:19Speaker 1: Smith on Dodgers territory talking about the ABS challenge system.
- 20:25Speaker 9: Obviously, the ones that are are for sure, you know,
- 20:27Speaker 9: strikes that they miss, you're going to challenge that. But
- 20:31Speaker 9: I mean even then you're I'm usually pretty confident when
- 20:33Speaker 9: I do, and sometimes I'm still wrong. So it's you know,
- 20:36Speaker 9: bigger situations. You know, men's corn position obviously, you know
- 20:41Speaker 9: two strikes, three ball accounts as well. Yeah, I think
- 20:46Speaker 9: I think there's some pitches that are the borderline that
- 20:49Speaker 9: you can flip a coin, but you might be in
- 20:50Speaker 9: favor of with certain pictures. But yeah, just just kind
- 20:54Speaker 9: of feeling situation out feeling you know, sometimes the pitcher
- 20:57Speaker 9: might need a strike, they're kind of struggling. Then there
- 21:00Speaker 9: might be a time to try to get them back
- 21:02Speaker 9: in the zone by by getting by getting it called
- 21:04Speaker 9: you know, reversed. So just a lot of thought. It's
- 21:09Speaker 9: a lot of reactionary but just well thought out kind.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Of pre I guess, yeah, so well thought out pre
- 21:16Speaker 1: I mean, as you can imagine, there's conversations that are
- 21:19Speaker 1: ongoing age a since it's new, but also conversations I
- 21:22Speaker 1: guess before the game about what might be good moments.
- 21:25Speaker 1: You don't know when it's going to pop up. But
- 21:27Speaker 1: point is you don't want to waste it early.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, listen, there are good challenges and there
- 21:33Speaker 6: are bad challenges, and it's all about the scoreboard at
- 21:35Speaker 6: the time of game. And there's also players that are
- 21:38Speaker 6: just selfish and don't care and they just challenge because
- 21:40Speaker 6: they think they're right, and then they get them wrong
- 21:42Speaker 6: and it costs their team. So I agree with this.
- 21:44Speaker 6: You have to have a conversation about this. But there's
- 21:47Speaker 6: more good challenges than bad challenges. If it affects the
- 21:49Speaker 6: outcome of a game, or possibly could affect the outcome
- 21:52Speaker 6: of a game, I say challenging. But you're starting to
- 21:54Speaker 6: see some guys that there's some borderline pitches early in games.
- 21:57Speaker 6: They will not challenge because they know later on they
- 21:59Speaker 6: might need it.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Mmm. That's smart.
- 22:05Speaker 1: That's what you should be paying attention to. Hey, krats,
- 22:07Speaker 1: this next one's for you. So former Phillies GM Matt
- 22:11Speaker 1: Klintech was just on the Phillies Show.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Remember him.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Yeah, he was trying to get the Phillies through their
- 22:17Speaker 1: rebuild process.
- 22:18Speaker 2: It did not work out.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Dave Dombrowski took over, it has worked out better in
- 22:22Speaker 1: terms of success, but he did do some things like
- 22:25Speaker 1: acquire Christopher Sanchez.
- 22:28Speaker 10: It's not I mean, it's a little different. I suppose
- 22:30Speaker 10: that what we were talking about with Sanchez, but it's
- 22:33Speaker 10: similar in that it was the ball of play. It
- 22:35Speaker 10: was the same approach. You know, He's he's six foot seven,
- 22:39Speaker 10: has crazy extension down the mound. Right when he releases
- 22:42Speaker 10: the ball, it's right on top of the hitters. And
- 22:45Speaker 10: that was the case when he was pitching as an amateur,
- 22:47Speaker 10: but he was pitching in junior college, the strike throwing
- 22:51Speaker 10: was you know, very meh, and that you had to
- 22:55Speaker 10: you had to bet on projection and development. And to
- 23:00Speaker 10: his credit and all the people that have helped him,
- 23:04Speaker 10: you know, he's been able to make those jumps. But
- 23:07Speaker 10: I think when when we're looking at no matter where
- 23:10Speaker 10: you work, you're always looking for pictures that have that
- 23:14Speaker 10: kind of upside. So again, he and Sanchez are deffinitive,
- 23:17Speaker 10: different profiles, different arsenals, a lot of differences, but I
- 23:20Speaker 10: think they're similar in that way that even when they
- 23:23Speaker 10: weren't when they were younger players that weren't fully polished.
- 23:27Speaker 10: You could still look at them and kind of dream
- 23:29Speaker 10: on the.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Ceiling there Matt Clintech talking about comparing Christopher Sanchez and
- 23:35Speaker 1: the miz who have been compared a lot lately for
- 23:38Speaker 1: their numbers in the past month. But he's now a
- 23:40Speaker 1: special assistant in the Brewers' front office. That's also where
- 23:43Speaker 1: you get the connection their crafts that that he had
- 23:46Speaker 1: Sanchez and then now you know, compares him to the
- 23:48Speaker 1: mizz where he works. So the Brews actually have quite
- 23:50Speaker 1: a few of these guys. Dad Levine is a special
- 23:53Speaker 1: advisor with the Brewers as well. But anyway, thoughts on
- 23:57Speaker 1: on Clintech. I, you know, I haven't heard his name
- 23:59Speaker 1: in it, but it's not like it's been forever. It's
- 24:02Speaker 1: probably been what five six years.
- 24:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I think he left the Phillies around twenty twenty
- 24:08Speaker 5: one somewhere and there. I didn't look it up before
- 24:09Speaker 5: we talked about this, but yeah, I mean, you know,
- 24:13Speaker 5: what is cool comparison because it's tough to compare lefties
- 24:17Speaker 5: and righty's. It's tough to compare, you know, a guy
- 24:20Speaker 5: with an elite changeup that people forget. Christopher Sanchez does
- 24:23Speaker 5: throw ninety seven ninety eight. But comparing them is and
- 24:29Speaker 5: Christopher Sanchez is totally apples and oranges. The only similarity
- 24:33Speaker 5: is they both are dominant pitchers. And I think Clintex's
- 24:39Speaker 5: time as a GM maybe the reason we haven't heard
- 24:41Speaker 5: from him. I think he lacked one of the pieces
- 24:44Speaker 5: of being a GM and running an organization as the
- 24:47Speaker 5: head lead, which I think the Brewers do a really
- 24:50Speaker 5: good job of of really delving into the person and
- 24:54Speaker 5: getting the most out of that person and not just the.
- 24:58Speaker 7: Metrics of all.
- 24:59Speaker 5: He's six foot se and he's you know, he throws
- 25:02Speaker 5: a ball that does this or that, Like there's there's
- 25:06Speaker 5: different things that make an organization tick like the Brewers
- 25:10Speaker 5: that I feel like he didn't implement when he was
- 25:12Speaker 5: with the Phillies.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Yeah, you've got the data analysis people and then the
- 25:17Speaker 1: people skills people, and you get the blend, and that's
- 25:19Speaker 1: when you get the perfect front office leader. Lastly, Buck
- 25:23Speaker 1: Showalter talking about Zach Britton and the Mound visit during
- 25:26Speaker 1: the twenty fourteen Alds he was on Birdland Territory.
- 25:30Speaker 8: You know, I was getting ready for that series. The
- 25:32Speaker 8: matchup I didn't like, and there weren't many matchups that
- 25:35Speaker 8: I didn't like with Zach. I didn't like castallanas. He's
- 25:38Speaker 8: a down hitter, low ball one typically for a right
- 25:43Speaker 8: handed hitter. You know, he smothered the ball up and
- 25:46Speaker 8: didn't do a whole lot of damage, but the ball
- 25:48Speaker 8: down and I just and I said to myself, warn
- 25:50Speaker 8: that series, I have a chance to keep him from
- 25:52Speaker 8: hurting us against Zach. I was going to do it,
- 25:56Speaker 8: And sure enough, here it came. Now, if you remember right,
- 25:59Speaker 8: they had ship earlier in the game and the people
- 26:02Speaker 8: hitting in the bottom of order and their pinshitter, there
- 26:05Speaker 8: wasn't a whole lot of damage behind him there. So
- 26:10Speaker 8: you know, what do you call it whistling in the graveyard?
- 26:13Speaker 8: When I went out there, I said, here's what we're
- 26:14Speaker 8: gonna do, Zach. We're gonna walk this guy. You know,
- 26:16Speaker 8: Zach didn't want to walk anybody, but I didn't give
- 26:19Speaker 8: him much choice. That's you know, you don't want to
- 26:20Speaker 8: put him in that in that spot. These guys would
- 26:23Speaker 8: always ask a picture if they want to walk somebody, Well,
- 26:26Speaker 8: if your picture is not very good, if he says yes,
- 26:28Speaker 8: I do you know that's your job. That's not some
- 26:31Speaker 8: not third job. And I said, we're gonna get this
- 26:34Speaker 8: guy to roll over a ground ball. Here. We're gonna
- 26:35Speaker 8: get on the bus and go home. And if I'm
- 26:39Speaker 8: leaving the mount, I go, I don't know about that,
- 26:43Speaker 8: you know, but I remember Ryan Flairt he was playing third,
- 26:46Speaker 8: said it's a ball one hopping and he was getting
- 26:49Speaker 8: ready to throw the second he went, are.
- 26:50Speaker 2: You that's a good story. I love that stuff.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Aj when you break down the playoff scenarios years later.
- 27:00Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean.
- 27:01Speaker 6: And the fact that Bucket thought about this before and
- 27:03Speaker 6: then it comes into it comes into play is amazing.
- 27:06Speaker 6: I think this is why managers. Certain managers are just great.
- 27:10Speaker 6: And I think that they think about they try to
- 27:13Speaker 6: think about all scenarios before they come up. And this
- 27:15Speaker 6: one came up and he did what he thought it
- 27:17Speaker 6: were would work, and it worked and.
- 27:19Speaker 7: They moved on. So good for you, book, and we'd
- 27:21Speaker 7: love to have you on book because I love when
- 27:23Speaker 7: you ask us questions.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I love when I take a break with Buck Buctober
- 27:29Speaker 1: Buck the roller coaster hops on and takes over the
- 27:32Speaker 1: hosting well to ask you guys, let me ask you this.
- 27:36Speaker 2: It's a very unique style. It's great.
- 27:39Speaker 1: We'll have him back on soon, but get interviews this
- 27:41Speaker 1: week on the Ft Network on the variety of our
- 27:43Speaker 1: shows
