- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst. Paul,
- 0:21Speaker 2: we made it.
- 0:22Speaker 3: The NFL season is here. We got a Wednesday Night
- 0:24Speaker 3: Football at WNF. We love it. NBC. We got a
- 0:28Speaker 3: football on the set. I think they only sent one
- 0:29Speaker 3: of one to us.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I'm not sure about that, Paul. I've seen others. You know,
- 0:33Speaker 2: here's the point. Mike Tirico, Chris Collinsworth, our good buddies
- 0:36Speaker 2: are going to be in our house tonight. Right.
- 0:38Speaker 3: They don't know we're good friends. We think of them
- 0:40Speaker 3: as good friends. They kind of know who we are.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah, Patriots-Seahawks tonight, 820 Eastern. Paul, why does this matchup
- 0:46Speaker 2: feel a little different than some opening nights?
- 0:49Speaker 3: Well, Seattle's most interesting defending Super Bowl champ, maybe of
- 0:51Speaker 3: all time, is that they're still fighting for respect. Usually
- 0:54Speaker 3: that ends when you win the Super Bowl, especially in
- 0:56Speaker 3: dominant fashion. And the Seahawks last year, they weren't some
- 0:59Speaker 3: fluky team. They weren't like they lucked in or they
- 1:02Speaker 3: won it on a fluke. And there still seems like
- 1:04Speaker 3: they're battling the Rams, the Cowboys, and others for relevancy.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Well, yes, but I'd say they don't get back. I'd
- 1:11Speaker 2: say that neither of these teams get back. Let me
- 1:12Speaker 2: give you some numbers, Paul. Okay, Super Bowl winner, about 25%
- 1:15Speaker 2: make it to the Super Bowl the following year, and
- 1:18Speaker 2: half of those teams win. That's only about 13%. And
- 1:21Speaker 2: the Super Bowl loser, only 14% of them make it back.
- 1:24Speaker 2: You know, you heard about the Super Bowl losing jinx.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You look at Seattle and New England, a lot of
- 1:28Speaker 2: people are making picks. I'm seeing some Seattle, not a
- 1:31Speaker 2: lot of New England. But still, you're right. The Seahawks
- 1:33Speaker 2: are not feared.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I'm going to stat you back. The Seahawks weren't fluky.
- 1:37Speaker 3: In 2025, the regular season, the Seahawks outscored their opponents
- 1:40Speaker 3: by 191 points. That's the most point differential in all
- 1:44Speaker 3: of professional football. That's not a fluke. And look at
- 1:47Speaker 3: where they are in the odds. They're fourth, which is
- 1:49Speaker 3: lightly respectable. But do you think it's because... The Seahawks
- 1:53Speaker 3: didn't make a big splash in the offseason. Not a
- 1:55Speaker 3: lot of changes. I know they let Ken Walker go,
- 1:57Speaker 3: but they are a drama-free Super Bowl team.
- 2:01Speaker 2: No, I don't think so. Because you have to look
- 2:04Speaker 2: at how they got there last year. They beat a
- 2:06Speaker 2: Patriots team that, in my opinion, probably was a year ahead.
- 2:09Speaker 2: It shouldn't have been that year.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I do agree with that. I think you've got a
- 2:12Speaker 3: good point. They didn't have to beat the Bills, the Chiefs,
- 2:16Speaker 3: or the Ravens to win that Super Bowl.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And what else happens to Super Bowl teams? They lose
- 2:19Speaker 2: their coordinators, and I know you think this is a
- 2:21Speaker 2: big deal. They lost Clint Kubiak, who was running the
- 2:24Speaker 2: offense with Sam Darnold. We'll see how much that hurts.
- 2:27Speaker 2: It's hurt a lot of the past Super Bowl winners.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It's certainly hurt my Eagles.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Okay, but Sam Darnold, does he factor in this at all?
- 2:33Speaker 3: Because people like, don't love, nationally, Sam Darnold, even after
- 2:37Speaker 3: leading a team to a Super Bowl.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, we've seen Sam Darnold with questionable offensive coordinators.
- 2:42Speaker 2: He's not the same quarterback. Everything was working perfectly last year.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I like the Seahawks a lot. I agree, by the way.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I think they're going to have a chip on their
- 2:49Speaker 2: shoulder because of this disrespect, and they are a solid team. But, again,
- 2:54Speaker 2: it feels like the Rams are the defending champions or
- 2:57Speaker 2: the Seahawks are the upstart team when that's not the case.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I'm a premature warm take you here, and Sam Darnold
- 3:02Speaker 3: reminds me of Joe Montana from the stance of his coolness,
- 3:06Speaker 3: his calmness. Joe Montana didn't put up monster stats. He
- 3:09Speaker 3: was more of a guy who just pinpoint, ran a
- 3:11Speaker 3: little bit, passed really well, but just kept winning. Now,
- 3:14Speaker 3: it's really early to make any Montana comparisons with him,
- 3:17Speaker 3: but demeanor-wise, I think Darnold has a little Montana in him.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That's a little too warm for me. I'm going to
- 3:23Speaker 2: say that's outright hot. Sam Darnold, Joe Montana?
- 3:25Speaker 3: I'm not retracting, but what I'm saying is he is cool.
- 3:28Speaker 3: He's entered that zone where he's trustworthy. Is he going
- 3:32Speaker 3: to go left and throw 70 yards across his body?
- 3:34Speaker 3: You're never going to see those highlights.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I think Steve Young actually makes more sense because Steve
- 3:38Speaker 2: Young took forever to reach that elite level Sam Darnold,
- 3:41Speaker 2: the early part of his career, was not good, just
- 3:43Speaker 2: like Steve Young was.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Did you just out-warm take me by doubling down and
- 3:46Speaker 3: saying not just Joe Montana, but now Steve Young comparisons?
- 3:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally topped you there.
- 3:51Speaker 3: You can tell we don't rehearse this show.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Meanwhile, New England, you know, listen, they beat last year,
- 3:56Speaker 2: they beat the Chargers. Chargers never win the playoffs. They
- 3:59Speaker 2: beat the Texans, CJ Stroud, terribly. And then they beat
- 4:02Speaker 2: the Broncos with a backup quarterback in the playoffs to
- 4:04Speaker 2: reach the Super Bowl, struggle in the Super Bowl. I mean,
- 4:08Speaker 2: everyone is kind of back for New England. The key players,
- 4:10Speaker 2: they have their coaches back. But still, there are a
- 4:13Speaker 2: lot of questions about it as far as, like, Super
- 4:15Speaker 2: Bowl repeat. It's hard to see. I went through.
- 4:17Speaker 3: There's this website. You could look at all the experts'
- 4:19Speaker 3: picks before the season. And I found two out of, like,
- 4:21Speaker 3: 60 that had the AFC title game with the Patriots
- 4:25Speaker 3: in it. Nobody loves the Patriots at all. I think
- 4:27Speaker 3: they think, yeah, they overachieved a little bit last year.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Drake Bay a little ahead of schedule. But they added A.J. Brown.
- 4:33Speaker 3: They added some other tools. They actually have a little
- 4:36Speaker 3: bit better of a roster than last year I do think,
- 4:39Speaker 3: and I don't want to get into the offseason, but
- 4:40Speaker 3: I think the offseason messy stuff around the Patriots distracted
- 4:44Speaker 3: the media from that they're a quality football team.
- 4:46Speaker 2: You mean the Mike Vrabel stuff?
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you said it, not me.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I would just say it. I mean, also people are
- 4:51Speaker 2: talking about their harder schedule. That's a big storyline. I
- 4:53Speaker 2: don't think the Vrabel messiness stuff matters because you look
- 4:56Speaker 2: at every great team, they have messiness. Maybe not with
- 4:58Speaker 2: the head coach.
- 4:58Speaker 3: I don't think it actually matters on the field, but
- 5:00Speaker 3: it mattered with the coverage.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, I like the Patriots a lot
- 5:04Speaker 2: this year, but we're going to do our Super Bowl
- 5:05Speaker 2: picks later. When you look at their schedule this year,
- 5:08Speaker 2: it is a lot harder to pick them than it
- 5:10Speaker 2: was last year. And they still have Buffalo looming in
- 5:12Speaker 2: the AFC East.
- 5:12Speaker 3: We did mention this yesterday. The Patriots finished with Jets
- 5:15Speaker 3: and Dolphins in two of their last three. That could
- 5:18Speaker 3: help if it's dicey getting into the playoffs.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so you don't have any faith in the Jets
- 5:22Speaker 2: and the Dolphins?
- 5:23Speaker 3: I'm going to say no. That's a hard no. That's
- 5:25Speaker 3: not even a warm take. That's a cold take. All right,
- 5:26Speaker 3: let's get to it. The Patrick Mahomes situation is all set.
- 5:29Speaker 3: He will start Monday Night Football against the Broncos, according
- 5:32Speaker 3: to Andy Reid. You said at one point you may
- 5:35Speaker 3: hold him back. I also am concerned with Patrick Holmes
- 5:38Speaker 3: going against the, at worst, second-best pass rush in the league.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Would you be worried? Do you expect a different-looking Mahomes
- 5:46Speaker 3: Monday night and maybe the first month of the season?
- 5:48Speaker 2: Well, Mahomes knows how to play conservatively. He usually only
- 5:50Speaker 2: runs in the playoffs and in the fourth quarter when
- 5:52Speaker 2: they need it. So he is not going to put
- 5:54Speaker 2: himself out there. But here's a guy you just don't
- 5:57Speaker 2: count out. Remember... The Super Bowl against the Eagles in Arizona,
- 6:01Speaker 2: he was limping at halftime. Then he came out in
- 6:03Speaker 2: the second half and completely shredded the Eagles.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Great point.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I just think that Patrick Mahomes defies all logic. And
- 6:10Speaker 2: everyone's sort of counting them out. It says the weapons
- 6:12Speaker 2: around him aren't great. But the weapons after Tyreek Hill
- 6:14Speaker 2: left have never been great. It's Patrick Mahomes. And, no,
- 6:18Speaker 2: I don't question him at all. I think he'll figure
- 6:20Speaker 2: out the health and be effective.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Any concern about guys who are kind of semi-proven? Xavier Worthy?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Nope.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Rasheed Rice?
- 6:25Speaker 2: Nope.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Travis Kelsey? No worries.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I have no worries. I have no worries. If Mahomes
- 6:31Speaker 2: is healthy and Andy Reid is the head coach, I
- 6:33Speaker 2: think that the reason we even know those names are
- 6:35Speaker 2: because of Mahomes.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Do you see them pivoting a little bit towards leaning
- 6:38Speaker 3: towards the running game, maybe at the first half of
- 6:40Speaker 3: the season or in playoff games, to spend money on
- 6:42Speaker 3: Kenneth Walker, the artist formerly known as Kenneth Walker III,
- 6:45Speaker 3: now Ken Walker? That seems like a pivot to me,
- 6:48Speaker 3: that they're saying, we're going to run the ball and
- 6:50Speaker 3: focus it to make Mahomes less of a target.
- 6:53Speaker 2: No, that's a great point. They've been near the bottom
- 6:55Speaker 2: of the league in explosive runs the last few years.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Hopefully for them, Ken Walker can get a few going.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Explosive runs, only good in football.
- 7:02Speaker 2: All right, we're going to do predictions throughout the show today,
- 7:04Speaker 2: and we're going to start with a couple of awards.
- 7:06Speaker 2: We're going to do all the awards. We're going to start, Paul,
- 7:09Speaker 2: with the O-Poi and the D-Poi, the Offensive Player of
- 7:12Speaker 2: the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year. Why
- 7:14Speaker 2: don't you get us going with Offensive Player of the Year?
- 7:16Speaker 3: We have to start with the caveat that the Offensive
- 7:18Speaker 3: Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year,
- 7:20Speaker 3: the OPOY is always a non-quarterback who overachieves. Not always,
- 7:24Speaker 3: but most. Almost always. If you're a running back or
- 7:26Speaker 3: wide receiver, it's very hard to win the MVP. Look
- 7:28Speaker 3: at the odds. Jameer Gibbs, B. John Robinson, neither won
- 7:32Speaker 3: it last year. Chase, Puka, Jefferson, all the usual suspects.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Jonathan Taylor in there, he's kind of a quiet assassin there.
- 7:40Speaker 3: That seems to be the cutoff point of people who
- 7:42Speaker 3: can win it. I will go first. I gave this
- 7:45Speaker 3: a lot of thought, a lot of thought last night,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and then I did the thing. I stopped thinking because
- 7:49Speaker 3: thinking gets me in trouble when I pick. I went obvious.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Jameer Gibbs and here's why from the Lions. Jameer Gibbs
- 7:54Speaker 3: is under contract. He got the big new deal, and
- 7:56Speaker 3: they have less depth at running back. They're kind of
- 7:58Speaker 3: spotty at the running back position. There's no more David
- 8:00Speaker 3: Montgomery to thunder and lightning that offense. It's all Jameer
- 8:04Speaker 3: Gibbs all the time. He's a sure thing. He's entering
- 8:07Speaker 3: his prime as a running back. I could see one
- 8:09Speaker 3: of those 2,400 yards of all-purpose rushing and receiving seasons
- 8:13Speaker 3: and cruising to the Opoy.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Are you a little worried about the wear and tear
- 8:16Speaker 2: on him now that he won't have as much help
- 8:18Speaker 2: to share?
- 8:18Speaker 3: Not yet, but this is when you use him. He's
- 8:21Speaker 3: completely under contract. You have three years to get a
- 8:24Speaker 3: Super Bowl with this guy.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Okay. I am also going a non-quarterback, pretty obvious, and
- 8:29Speaker 2: I'm pretty high up in the odds as well. I
- 8:31Speaker 2: think people forgot about Jamar Chase just a little bit.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They haven't forgotten about him, but you remember two years
- 8:35Speaker 2: ago he won the Triple Crown for receiving, which is
- 8:37Speaker 2: completely unstoppable. I think Joe Burrow is on a mission
- 8:40Speaker 2: this year. Last year, of course, he was hurt for
- 8:42Speaker 2: half the season. Chase and Burrow, to me, is probably
- 8:45Speaker 2: the number one quarterback-to-wide receiver connection in the entire league.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I think Chase really wants people to remember what he
- 8:52Speaker 2: did two years ago. And I think the Bengals, they're
- 8:55Speaker 2: not going to be my Super Bowl pick necessarily, but
- 8:57Speaker 2: I think they are all in for this year. Improvements
- 8:59Speaker 2: on defense. I think they're fired up. Burrow just looks
- 9:02Speaker 2: like a man on the mission. And Chase is the
- 9:05Speaker 2: one who's going to benefit from that.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I think this is a great pick because if you
- 9:07Speaker 3: look at every year, I always look at targets by
- 9:09Speaker 3: a wide receiver and targets for a quarterback. And he
- 9:11Speaker 3: always leads the league. When Joe Burrow is healthy, Jamar
- 9:14Speaker 3: Chase leads the league in targets per game. It's like, JSN,
- 9:17Speaker 3: don't be creative. Just throw it to that guy.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And not only that, he can get a five-yard pass
- 9:21Speaker 2: and go to the house or go long. Guy, he's
- 9:23Speaker 2: the most versatile big-time receiver. Everybody's got a specialty. He's
- 9:26Speaker 2: got them all.
- 9:27Speaker 3: All right, let's get to the depoy, the defensive player
- 9:30Speaker 3: of the year. I'm going to go again with less thinking,
- 9:33Speaker 3: more obviousness. Will Anderson of the Texans. He is hitting
- 9:36Speaker 3: his stride as a player. He just turned 25 years old.
- 9:39Speaker 3: He's a monster on the defensive line. Miles Garrett is
- 9:42Speaker 3: in there. I don't think Miles Garrett could win it
- 9:44Speaker 3: this year because the team he's on will help him
- 9:46Speaker 3: out too much. He already won it. Aiden Hutchinson, right
- 9:48Speaker 3: in the mix. Nick Benito, not enough respect, but Will
- 9:51Speaker 3: Anderson Jr., he's unbelievable. He's the best pass rusher in
- 9:55Speaker 3: the game, not named Miles Garrett, and he's probably a tie.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And he's at the point in his career now, age 25,
- 10:00Speaker 3: if I were the offensive line, I would just start
- 10:02Speaker 3: reasoning with him. I would just say, Will, can you
- 10:04Speaker 3: just take it easy on us? Because he's truly unstoppable.
- 10:08Speaker 3: The other side of his defensive line, Daniil Hunter, so
- 10:10Speaker 3: you can't assign a back to him on every single play.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Let me just make this clear. So you want the
- 10:14Speaker 2: left tackle to be like, hey, Will, you know, I
- 10:16Speaker 2: have a family at home. I have a contract coming
- 10:19Speaker 2: up this year. Can you please just take it easy?
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll let you have this sack and then you
- 10:22Speaker 3: relax for a couple quarters because we both know I
- 10:24Speaker 3: can't stop.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I'm not sure that's how the NFL works. I'll tell
- 10:27Speaker 2: you how not so fast works. We don't tell our
- 10:29Speaker 2: picks in advance. Nope. And I picked Will Anderson as well. Fine.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Twelve sacks last year. That number goes up. That defense is,
- 10:36Speaker 2: to me, one of the most impressive units, offensive defense
- 10:40Speaker 2: around the league. Daniil Hunter on the other side makes
- 10:42Speaker 2: it impossible to block. I think that defense is the
- 10:45Speaker 2: story of the year, so I'm going narrative, and he
- 10:47Speaker 2: will have the numbers. You know who my dark horse was,
- 10:50Speaker 2: and he's not a dark horse. Everyone forgot about Aiden Hutchinson.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Aiden Hutchinson with Detroit was going to win it two
- 10:56Speaker 2: years ago, so he's in the mix, but I think
- 10:59Speaker 2: Will Anderson's the hardest guy to block. I did think
- 11:00Speaker 2: that until I heard your strategy of being nice to him.
- 11:03Speaker 2: It's unusual.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I don't think any offensive tackles are going to take
- 11:06Speaker 3: us up on that, but Will Anderson's entering that prime, 25-29,
- 11:08Speaker 3: like J.J. Watt is prime. Aaron Donald is prime. They
- 11:12Speaker 3: have that four- or five-year window that they're truly unstoppable,
- 11:16Speaker 3: and it doesn't really matter what year.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Yeah, very few players, one defensive player of the year,
- 11:19Speaker 2: have been 30 or over. Correct. Miles Garrett just turned 30,
- 11:22Speaker 2: by the way.
- 11:22Speaker 3: But he is an anomaly of, like, Genetics.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I'm just saying, that might be a reason to fade him.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I like your reasoning. He'll split sacks with Aaron Donald
- 11:31Speaker 2: and everyone else there. All right, coming up next, we'll
- 11:33Speaker 2: go back to college football. Western Michigan has changed its tune.
- 11:36Speaker 2: What's next in the fallout from the Michigan game? Next
- 11:39Speaker 2: on Not So Fast. Here we go, Pearl.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Midday pick-me-up, as always, on Not So Fast. And this
- 11:46Speaker 3: one we're going, we always go out west because that's
- 11:49Speaker 3: what we do here. Ooh, Lazaro Montez going yard, as
- 11:53Speaker 3: they say. Big fella, great hitter. Really nice uniforms. Number 99.
- 11:58Speaker 2: That one would have gotten out of pretty much every park,
- 12:01Speaker 2: including national parks.
- 12:03Speaker 3: What if he said, I'm not 99 after Aaron Judge.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I'm after Wayne Gretzky. I'm a big hockey guy. That'd
- 12:08Speaker 3: be original.
- 12:08Speaker 2: That would be original. Now, I'm not sure that's accurate.
- 12:11Speaker 3: We'll check. We'll look into it because we're journalists. All right,
- 12:13Speaker 3: let's get back to Not So Fast, Paxton Perloff. All
- 12:16Speaker 3: day we're doing our NFL predictions. Coach of the Year,
- 12:18Speaker 3: the Cody, coming up in about 10 minutes. A lot
- 12:20Speaker 3: coming on, but let's go with warm takes. Nice quarterback.
- 12:23Speaker 3: cuddly warm takes to start the NFL season. Here we go.
- 12:26Speaker 3: I'm going to go back to college. Western Michigan University,
- 12:31Speaker 3: we know what happened the other day against Michigan. If
- 12:33Speaker 3: you didn't see it, you don't own a phone or
- 12:35Speaker 3: a TV. And Western Michigan University, it took some time
- 12:38Speaker 3: to think about it. And the Mac, which we love,
- 12:40Speaker 3: Mac games Tuesday and Wednesday, the Mac took time to
- 12:42Speaker 3: think about it and looked it over and issued the statement.
- 12:45Speaker 3: They went back at it. After further study and investigations,
- 12:48Speaker 3: now evident that replay protocol was not properly followed in
- 12:51Speaker 3: determining whether time remained on the clock at the conclusion
- 12:54Speaker 3: of the Western Michigan-Michigan game. As a result, the MAAC
- 12:56Speaker 3: has submitted a formal appeal to the NCAA FBS Oversight
- 13:00Speaker 3: Committee and the college football playoff. The MAAC is requesting
- 13:02Speaker 3: that those bodies recognize Western Michigan as the actual winner
- 13:06Speaker 3: of the game. That's no joke. They're saying, we looked
- 13:09Speaker 3: at this, we took our time, and you made the
- 13:11Speaker 3: wrong decision. What they're saying is that the Big Ten
- 13:15Speaker 3: and people at the Michigan game should have only looked
- 13:17Speaker 3: at the TV clock and not gone to the secondary
- 13:19Speaker 3: Big Ten clock because that is not protocol. Protocol. And
- 13:23Speaker 3: You know what's funny? A couple hours later, the NCAA
- 13:26Speaker 3: agreed with them to a point. The Big Ten agreed
- 13:29Speaker 3: with them to a point. If you look a little
- 13:31Speaker 3: bit later, what did the Big Ten and the NCAA do?
- 13:33Speaker 3: They responded with, yeah, you're right, my bad. And they said,
- 13:36Speaker 3: here's new guidance for college football games going forward. The
- 13:40Speaker 3: official time for all college games is the time displayed
- 13:42Speaker 3: on the in-stadium clock. So what they said, the NCAA
- 13:46Speaker 3: to Western Michigan and the MAAC is, yep, you're right,
- 13:49Speaker 3: we were wrong. That said, we're not giving you the ballgame.
- 13:51Speaker 3: They aren't going to give them the ballgame today. They're
- 13:53Speaker 3: not going to fix this. How do you feel about
- 13:55Speaker 3: this at this juncture?
- 13:56Speaker 2: Well, it's so funny. The game was Saturday, and today
- 13:58Speaker 2: I believe is Wednesday. Yes. And it feels like this
- 14:01Speaker 2: story is just as hot as it was on Sunday.
- 14:04Speaker 2: So much back and forth on DP's show field. I
- 14:06Speaker 2: don't think that you can change the result. Firstly, that's
- 14:09Speaker 2: the way I lean. I know we did a poll
- 14:11Speaker 2: earlier in the hour about it, but I don't think
- 14:14Speaker 2: you can change the result, although the message has been
- 14:16Speaker 2: sent next time they better not screw this up.
- 14:18Speaker 3: It's not a flag by an official. It's a replay message.
- 14:22Speaker 3: extra down that was given improperly. And if any game
- 14:25Speaker 3: you could say this down should have happened, if you
- 14:27Speaker 3: take the down away, then you go to the score
- 14:30Speaker 3: with zeros left on the clock, which was a Western
- 14:31Speaker 3: Michigan win. If you're ever going to give one back
- 14:34Speaker 3: in sports, this is one that everyone would agree with,
- 14:37Speaker 3: except for maybe Michigan football.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I do think you get a mulligan in the sense
- 14:40Speaker 2: the college football playoff committee can look back and sort
- 14:43Speaker 2: of give half credit to Western Michigan for this. So
- 14:45Speaker 2: if they're in it for that last spot for the
- 14:47Speaker 2: group of five, I think people will remember how this
- 14:49Speaker 2: game ended.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Last thing on this, I emailed the Mac in Western
- 14:52Speaker 3: Michigan to see are they going to go forward on this?
- 14:55Speaker 3: We're waiting to hear back, but are they going to
- 14:56Speaker 3: take this to the court or are they tapping out
- 14:58Speaker 3: and saying we're going to accept this?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Oh, man, we'll see. All right, I'm going to go
- 15:01Speaker 2: to the NFL. Baker Mayfield gets paid in Tampa Bay,
- 15:05Speaker 2: and it seems like a very positive day for the Bucs.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Not so fast. I don't understand what the Bucs are
- 15:11Speaker 2: doing big picture here, Paul. I know Baker Mayfield is
- 15:14Speaker 2: a very good player, but they were not able to
- 15:16Speaker 2: get to the next level when he was getting paid
- 15:18Speaker 2: $ 33 million a year. How are they going to get
- 15:20Speaker 2: to the Super Bowl now that he's getting paid $ 55
- 15:22Speaker 2: million a year? We know one of the best ways
- 15:24Speaker 2: to get to the Super Bowl is to have a
- 15:25Speaker 2: quarterback on a rookie deal. When QBs get expensive, it
- 15:29Speaker 2: is very hard to build a team around them. So
- 15:32Speaker 2: the Bucs are running back Baker Mayfield and Todd Bowles.
- 15:36Speaker 2: I don't get it. Todd Bowles, in particular, his head coach,
- 15:38Speaker 2: does not have a Super Bowl upside to me. You
- 15:40Speaker 2: look at the last few years with these two guys.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Baker's been 9-8, 10-7, 8-9. They're right around. 500. To me,
- 15:48Speaker 2: if I have an NFL team, it's Super Bowl or bus,
- 15:51Speaker 2: and I see this as we're good enough, this is fine,
- 15:54Speaker 2: we like Baker, but there's no pathway to the next level.
- 15:58Speaker 3: I'm with you. We talked about this a few weeks ago,
- 16:00Speaker 3: not so fast, when we were just talking before the
- 16:02Speaker 3: show started, and we said you're kind of in no
- 16:04Speaker 3: man's land with Baker Mayfield. If you pay him $ 55 million,
- 16:07Speaker 3: you're giving him max money for maybe B-plus level play.
- 16:10Speaker 3: But I think that the Bucs are in this no-man
- 16:13Speaker 3: land where if they don't do it now, Baker Mayfield
- 16:15Speaker 3: becomes a free agent and they have to start over
- 16:17Speaker 3: at the quarterback position, which you're saying is maybe the
- 16:19Speaker 3: right decision.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the problem is they probably won't have
- 16:22Speaker 2: a great draft pick after this year. So even if
- 16:25Speaker 2: it is a really rich quarterback class, but they could
- 16:26Speaker 2: trade up. Yeah, they're going to have to start over
- 16:28Speaker 2: at some point. What, do you get three years with
- 16:30Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield? I don't think they win a Super Bowl
- 16:31Speaker 2: in that three years. Also, their defense is slipping in
- 16:34Speaker 2: the rankings today. They were 21 last year. I don't
- 16:36Speaker 2: know if Todd Bowles has his fastball.
- 16:38Speaker 3: That's warm, and I'm with you. All right, let's get
- 16:39Speaker 3: back to another warm take. I'm going to go back
- 16:41Speaker 3: to college. All right, let's look at this one. LSU
- 16:44Speaker 3: and the SEC, it's the best matchup of the year,
- 16:46Speaker 3: better than anything on the field. We know the whole
- 16:48Speaker 3: LSU story and Lane Kiffin trying to get a couple
- 16:50Speaker 3: pros back on his roster. Yesterday, the SEC announced they're
- 16:54Speaker 3: having a special all-presidents AD meeting and a vote whether
- 16:58Speaker 3: to keep LSU in the conference. And that is basically
- 17:01Speaker 3: Greg Sankey in a street fight taking off his shirt
- 17:03Speaker 3: and letting the smaller guy know him. check this out
- 17:05Speaker 3: because you don't want any part of this. Greg Sankey,
- 17:08Speaker 3: as we said last week on Not So Fast, is
- 17:10Speaker 3: the guy who stirs the drink in the SEC. And
- 17:12Speaker 3: he's not going to let Lane Kiffin, who is here
- 17:15Speaker 3: and could be gone in a couple years out of
- 17:17Speaker 3: the SEC, tell him what to do. And were they
- 17:19Speaker 3: going to go to a vote to kick LSU out
- 17:20Speaker 3: of the conference?
- 17:21Speaker 2: No.
- 17:22Speaker 3: But he liked the idea of it. He liked floating
- 17:24Speaker 3: it out there. Lane Kiffin flinched. Lane Kiffin set his
- 17:27Speaker 3: roster for the season, and those two former pros are
- 17:29Speaker 3: not on his roster. So Greg Sankey got the W.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Let Lane Kiffin know we're not doing this. And he
- 17:35Speaker 3: went old school with like a true threat, a real threat.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I think the whole story is overblown, Paul, because these
- 17:40Speaker 2: guys were not going to go to the NFL if
- 17:43Speaker 2: they didn't change. If the rule had existed where the
- 17:45Speaker 2: class of 2022 could have stayed in college, these guys
- 17:47Speaker 2: would have stayed in. I think they got screwed. I'm
- 17:50Speaker 2: on team Lane.
- 17:51Speaker 3: But we love it. We love infighting. We love SEC drama,
- 17:55Speaker 3: the soap opera that is the SEC. Lane Kiffin is
- 17:58Speaker 3: a button pusher. I never think he's done so well.
- 18:01Speaker 3: That's a good story.
- 18:01Speaker 2: What if LSU wins the SEC and then they become
- 18:05Speaker 2: best friends?
- 18:05Speaker 3: You want Lane Kiffin to win the SEC title and
- 18:08Speaker 3: have to shake hands with Greg Sankey as he handles
- 18:10Speaker 3: the trophy.
- 18:11Speaker 2: All right, for my last warm take, I'm going to
- 18:12Speaker 2: stay in college football. The powers that be may expand
- 18:17Speaker 2: to 24 teams for the college football playoff from 12 teams. Now,
- 18:20Speaker 2: a lot of people think that's way too much. Some
- 18:22Speaker 2: people want to go back to four. We're all over
- 18:25Speaker 2: the place. I have the perfect number, Paul. Perfect number.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I did the math. It's got to be 16, not 24.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Because last year, if you look at the top 24 teams,
- 18:34Speaker 2: you're getting into the Georgia Tech-Houston area. But if you
- 18:37Speaker 2: stop at 16, that was USC last year. And more importantly,
- 18:40Speaker 2: you got Notre Dame in 2025. Not only did Notre
- 18:43Speaker 2: Dame deserve to get in, in my opinion, I think
- 18:45Speaker 2: they could have won it all if they were there
- 18:47Speaker 2: last year. And Texas just missed. They would be in
- 18:50Speaker 2: a 16-team playoff. They could have made some noise in
- 18:52Speaker 2: the playoff. So I think with NIL, there's a lot
- 18:54Speaker 2: of parity around college football. I think there are 16
- 18:57Speaker 2: teams who could compete for the title, and that way
- 19:00Speaker 2: you could be a little bit looser. Like Texas lost
- 19:02Speaker 2: to Ohio State last year. To me, that should not
- 19:05Speaker 2: have counted against their resume. The committee said it did,
- 19:08Speaker 2: but if they had 16 teams, Texas would have been in.
- 19:11Speaker 2: I think this is going to help the sport if
- 19:13Speaker 2: they expand. 24 is just a little bit too much
- 19:16Speaker 2: because I don't think there are 24 teams who could compete,
- 19:18Speaker 2: but 16 for sure.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you nailed this one because it does
- 19:21Speaker 3: feel like there's 16 competitive teams, like title-worthy teams going on.
- 19:26Speaker 3: And once you get to 24, you're setting up some
- 19:28Speaker 3: first-round matchups that may not be pretty, may not be
- 19:30Speaker 3: good football.
- 19:31Speaker 2: No, I mean, I don't mean to be a sort
- 19:33Speaker 2: of power conference elitist here. But as you're getting into,
- 19:37Speaker 2: like James Madison probably would have made it last year.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I don't know if they would have competed.
- 19:40Speaker 3: But it allows those cute stories, no offense, those cute
- 19:43Speaker 3: stories of a James Madison or a Cincinnati to sneak
- 19:45Speaker 3: into playoffs and get a shot every year.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Well, one of them gets to sneak in. I don't
- 19:48Speaker 2: know if we need three or four. But, you know,
- 19:50Speaker 2: when South Carolina and USC and teams like that end
- 19:54Speaker 2: up between 12 and 16, they could be really good.
- 19:56Speaker 2: And you look around this year, there's a lot of
- 19:58Speaker 2: talent spread around because NIL is Somebody said on a
- 20:01Speaker 2: DP show today, you don't keep five backups at Alabama.
- 20:04Speaker 2: You don't keep five star players. So now there are
- 20:07Speaker 2: a lot of teams that can make noise.
- 20:08Speaker 3: All right, it's game time here. We like to play games.
- 20:10Speaker 3: We've got a big game tonight coming up on NBC.
- 20:12Speaker 3: But let's go to a little game we like to
- 20:13Speaker 3: call Who Said It? One round today, Perloff. We're only
- 20:16Speaker 3: playing one round of Who Said It? You and I
- 20:19Speaker 3: are 0-2 on the season. Let's get to Who Said This?
- 20:23Speaker 3: It's the responsibility of the offense to score every time
- 20:26Speaker 3: we hit the grass. That's how we view it. We'll
- 20:28Speaker 3: find out a lot about this team. We won't know
- 20:30Speaker 3: week one who we are yet. That sounds Sean McVay-ish.
- 20:35Speaker 3: I'm going to go Sean McVay and his faux hawk.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Oh, I like that. It's got to be a great offense.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I'm going to go Joe Burrow because they actually probably
- 20:42Speaker 2: do have to score every time we hit the field.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Who said this?
- 20:46Speaker 1: Well, it's the responsibility of the offense to score every
- 20:48Speaker 1: time we hit the grass. Yeah.
- 20:50Speaker 2: That's how we view it. We'll find out a lot
- 20:52Speaker 2: about this team.
- 20:53Speaker 3: We won't know week one who we are yet. Now,
- 20:56Speaker 3: the hint there should have been grass, grass field. We
- 20:58Speaker 3: should have whittled it down to teams with grass because
- 21:00Speaker 3: he didn't say every time we're on the field turf.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that information is helpful. Now, why didn't you tell
- 21:05Speaker 2: me before we both said the wrong name?
- 21:07Speaker 3: You're supposed to be the smart one. That was Ben Johnson.
- 21:09Speaker 3: We'll play some more. We'll play some more who said
- 21:11Speaker 3: that tomorrow. But let's get to our next NFL pick.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Here we go, Perloff. The Cody, the coach of the year.
- 21:17Speaker 3: You want to go first?
- 21:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll go first. Okay. Okay, there's gonna be a
- 21:21Speaker 2: slight theme in my picks, Paul. I have convinced myself
- 21:26Speaker 2: to go high on the Dallas Cowboys. And the coach
- 21:29Speaker 2: of the year will be in Dallas, and his name
- 21:31Speaker 2: is Brian Schottheimer.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Drinking the Kool-Aid.
- 21:34Speaker 2: You see him there. He's plus 1,300. Pretty good odds.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Coach of the Year is always really the most improved coach.
- 21:40Speaker 2: You can't go from 13-4 to Coach of the Year.
- 21:43Speaker 3: It's best story.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you have to be 7-10, which is right around
- 21:47Speaker 2: where Dallas was, and then go to 11 or 12 wins.
- 21:50Speaker 2: That's why Kevin Stefanski wins all the time. Brian Schottheimer,
- 21:53Speaker 2: very popular coach as well. He fits exactly the mold
- 21:56Speaker 2: of who wins this award.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Yeah, you took all my notes. Coach of the Year
- 21:59Speaker 3: is really most improved coach, best story, who takes a
- 22:02Speaker 3: team that's average to good, good to great, or bad
- 22:06Speaker 3: to average. So I'm going to go with Jesse Minter
- 22:09Speaker 3: of the Ravens, and here's why. New face, new place,
- 22:12Speaker 3: replacing Harbaugh. If he overachieves this year, he gets a bonus. Like,
- 22:16Speaker 3: look what he did with Lamar Jackson. Look what he
- 22:18Speaker 3: did with all these good players that Harbaugh couldn't do
- 22:21Speaker 3: the past few years. So Jesse Minter looks good with
- 22:23Speaker 3: the salt-and-pepper beard. I'm picking him as my guy.
- 22:26Speaker 2: No, you're right. Because they had a bad season, so
- 22:27Speaker 2: they jumped back. But I worry people are going to say, oh, well,
- 22:30Speaker 2: that was Lamar Jackson. That wasn't the coach.
- 22:32Speaker 3: He'll get enough points where he gets to it. All right,
- 22:34Speaker 3: coming up next, oh, this is bonus coverage. Our guy,
- 22:38Speaker 3: James Palmer of Amazon NFL. We're going to talk to him,
- 22:40Speaker 3: get you ready for the season. And more picks from us,
- 22:43Speaker 3: including our Super Bowl picks, coming up. Not so fast.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Perloff. He's Pabst,
- 22:50Speaker 2: NBC Sports Now, Peacock. We have some more picks coming
- 22:54Speaker 2: up soon, Paul.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Offensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year, O'Roy, D-Roy,
- 22:59Speaker 3: and you and I have not seen each other's picks.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think we have very, very different opinions
- 23:04Speaker 2: on rookies. But first, you know, with the season starting,
- 23:08Speaker 2: first person we want to talk to with the actual
- 23:10Speaker 2: season tonight, James Palmer, of course, you know, from NFL
- 23:14Speaker 2: on Prime, one of the most respected reporters in the
- 23:16Speaker 2: NFL business, and a Philly native, Paul, which you know
- 23:20Speaker 2: I love.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Of course.
- 23:21Speaker 2: James, how you doing, buddy?
- 23:23Speaker 3: I'm good.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I mean, every time you hit me up, it's like
- 23:25Speaker 1: there's always like a bottom line that's like, thoughts on
- 23:28Speaker 1: the Phils? Or like something like that is always related
- 23:30Speaker 1: somewhere when you hit me up.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Hey, I'd love to chat.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I'm like, we can talk Phillies.
- 23:34Speaker 2: We can talk, you know, Sixers.
- 23:35Speaker 3: We can talk whatever.
- 23:36Speaker 1: But we'll stick to NFL.
- 23:37Speaker 2: It could be third quarter of the Super Bowl, James.
- 23:40Speaker 2: And I'll send you a note about the DH situation
- 23:42Speaker 2: with the Phillies. Yes, very much so. And you'll immediately reply.
- 23:46Speaker 2: All right. So we're ready to get started this season.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Obviously tonight, Seahawks and the Patriots. One team that's getting
- 23:53Speaker 2: a lot of hype, though, is the L.A. Rams, obviously. Now,
- 23:56Speaker 2: they're off in Australia. Do you buy the hype, or
- 23:59Speaker 2: are you worried that maybe there's too much hype?
- 24:02Speaker 1: If there's a team that can handle this hype, I
- 24:04Speaker 1: think you look at it from the general manager in
- 24:06Speaker 1: Les Snead, you look at it from Sean McVay, the
- 24:08Speaker 1: way these guys are wired and the way some of
- 24:10Speaker 1: their star power is wired, I think they can handle
- 24:13Speaker 1: the hype.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Now, I know the odds are not in their favor.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Even though the odds are outstanding, you look at teams
- 24:18Speaker 1: that have had these type of odds, they just haven't
- 24:19Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl yet. But I do think they
- 24:21Speaker 1: can handle all of this. A lot of these guys
- 24:23Speaker 1: have obviously been through success. And Trent McDuffie has been
- 24:26Speaker 1: through everything in Kansas City. And he comes over. And, like,
- 24:29Speaker 1: I do think they have the ability to handle all
- 24:31Speaker 1: of it. Now, it's not like they're without question. Can
- 24:33Speaker 1: they stop the run? How is all these different pieces
- 24:36Speaker 1: going to come together? I do think it's a, like,
- 24:38Speaker 1: woe is me type problems for Chris Shula. Like, how
- 24:40Speaker 1: do I put all these new, beautiful pieces together? But, like,
- 24:44Speaker 1: I do think you've got to have it really come
- 24:45Speaker 1: out onto the field and work. But I don't think
- 24:47Speaker 1: there's any sort of added pressure that they're putting on themselves,
- 24:50Speaker 1: and if anybody can handle it, I think they can.
- 24:54Speaker 1: It's just what's going on with the rest of the
- 24:55Speaker 1: NFC we can get to.
- 24:56Speaker 3: James, let's get to the Seahawks, and they're the opposite
- 24:58Speaker 3: of hype. I think they probably enjoyed the offseason not
- 25:00Speaker 3: being a focal point, even though they were so good
- 25:02Speaker 3: last year winning the Super Bowl. How much do you
- 25:04Speaker 3: like the way they run their franchise, letting Kenneth Walker go,
- 25:07Speaker 3: a star player, and then going cheaper at the running
- 25:10Speaker 3: back position? Just the way they do things year to year,
- 25:13Speaker 3: how respectable are they as a franchise?
- 25:15Speaker 1: Yeah, John does a great job. I mean, it's almost
- 25:17Speaker 1: like it is a little bit forgotten up there. I mean,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I was at NFL Network for a decade. It'd always
- 25:21Speaker 1: be like halfway through the season, they'd be like, James,
- 25:23Speaker 1: I think we have to send you up to Seattle.
- 25:25Speaker 1: We haven't really talked about Russell Wilson, who's having an
- 25:27Speaker 1: MVP season. They always just kind of fly under the
- 25:29Speaker 1: radar for these long stretches. And it's almost like, you know,
- 25:31Speaker 1: with the first question, they are doing it within their
- 25:33Speaker 1: own division with what's going on with the Rams. But
- 25:35Speaker 1: John has such a good pulse on the way he
- 25:38Speaker 1: wants to handle a roster, how they want to flip
- 25:40Speaker 1: things over. And, you know, they always knew that they
- 25:43Speaker 1: weren't going to bring Kenneth Walker back. And then, you know,
- 25:45Speaker 1: there are certain organizations, I would say like the Ravens
- 25:47Speaker 1: are one of these as well, where it's like, oh,
- 25:49Speaker 1: Jadarian Price just falls into their lap in the draft.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Some of these teams just seem to, in our perception,
- 25:54Speaker 1: just play it right oftentimes. But when you have a coach,
- 25:56Speaker 1: and let's just say this, by the way, Hard Knocks
- 25:58Speaker 1: this year has been outstanding, like far and away better
- 26:01Speaker 1: than years past in recent memory. But you see the
- 26:03Speaker 1: way Mike handles the defense. You see the way that
- 26:05Speaker 1: they handle it on offense. Jackson Smith and Jig was
- 26:08Speaker 1: just a smart pick. I think that's really, to me...
- 26:11Speaker 1: a microcosm of the way John Schneider and the organization operate.
- 26:14Speaker 1: I remember being at JSN's Pro Day. I remember everybody
- 26:17Speaker 1: having questions going, there's no comp form. People feel uncomfortable
- 26:21Speaker 1: in the NFL when there's no comp.
- 26:22Speaker 2: They panic.
- 26:23Speaker 1: They go, I can't comp him to anything. John Schneider
- 26:25Speaker 1: loved that. He was like, he's such a unique player.
- 26:27Speaker 1: We can use him in different ways. And then they go, hey,
- 26:29Speaker 1: we can move off of DK Metcalf. We know JSN's
- 26:31Speaker 1: role can expand. We have faith in him becoming this
- 26:33Speaker 1: type of player. And you see the way that's become.
- 26:35Speaker 1: I just always think there's a forward thinking outside of
- 26:37Speaker 1: the box mentality mentality that John Schneider works with. And
- 26:40Speaker 1: we've seen that on hard knocks a little bit. And
- 26:41Speaker 1: I think that's one of the reasons we've seen this
- 26:43Speaker 1: success and they got the right head coach.
- 26:44Speaker 2: To do it. All right, James, earlier on the Dan
- 26:47Speaker 2: Patrick show, Dan picked the Denver Broncos to win the
- 26:49Speaker 2: Super Bowl. You're seeing kind of not the most popular pick,
- 26:53Speaker 2: but a trending pick. I know you know that team
- 26:55Speaker 2: very well, living in Denver. What do you think? Broncos,
- 26:58Speaker 2: chance to win it all?
- 27:00Speaker 3: You know what?
- 27:01Speaker 1: You asked me, you know, be ready for a Super
- 27:02Speaker 1: Bowl pick. And I was this morning going over this.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I'm walking the dog and I'm like, I don't want
- 27:07Speaker 1: to do it because they're right here in my backyard,
- 27:09Speaker 1: but I was going to say Denver. And it's just
- 27:11Speaker 1: because I have fewer questions about the Broncos than I
- 27:13Speaker 1: do almost every other team. And what you're looking for
- 27:16Speaker 1: from a Super Bowl winner or a Super Bowl contender,
- 27:19Speaker 1: they have every one of those boxes checked. Everybody wants
- 27:22Speaker 1: a Super Bowl winning head coach.
- 27:23Speaker 3: They have it in Sean Payton.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Everybody wants, you know, an up-and-coming, you know, boy genius
- 27:28Speaker 1: guru on the offensive side of the ball. They have
- 27:29Speaker 1: that in Davis Webb. They have a cheat code like
- 27:32Speaker 1: Kansas City has used for years with Steve Spagnuolo for
- 27:34Speaker 1: some reason not getting head coaching loved. They have that
- 27:36Speaker 1: with Vance Joseph, who runs one of the best defenses
- 27:39Speaker 1: in all of football. They have a great pass rush.
- 27:41Speaker 1: They have a good, you know, really, really good play
- 27:43Speaker 1: from in the trenches on the D-line and the offensive
- 27:45Speaker 1: line is one of the best in football. They went
- 27:47Speaker 1: and found one piece that was missing, which was the
- 27:49Speaker 1: explosiveness within the offense and add Jalen Waddell to the mix.
- 27:52Speaker 1: You know, 50-50 jump ball on Cortland Sutton, the best
- 27:54Speaker 1: corner in football on Pat Sertan. Like, I'm kind of
- 27:57Speaker 1: just curious, what are their weaknesses? Now, they won a
- 28:00Speaker 1: ton of one-score games last year. I know Sean Payton
- 28:02Speaker 1: has preached to the team in private meetings, like, we're
- 28:04Speaker 1: not going to win all those again, so let's make
- 28:06Speaker 1: sure we're in a different spot in the fourth quarter.
- 28:08Speaker 1: But I see very few reasons why we shouldn't be
- 28:11Speaker 1: looking at Denver in this, because there's just so few
- 28:13Speaker 1: questions surrounding that organization right now.
- 28:16Speaker 3: All right, James, final 30 seconds with you. Thanks for
- 28:19Speaker 3: hanging out. We'll watch you all season on Amazon. The
- 28:21Speaker 3: NFC North, I'm an NFC North guy. They have a
- 28:23Speaker 3: lot of good teams. Do they have a Super Bowl
- 28:26Speaker 3: team in that division? Hmm. I don't know. What was
- 28:30Speaker 3: your take? I want yours first. I think I always
- 28:34Speaker 3: liked the Packers, but I don't love the Packers. I
- 28:36Speaker 3: think the Bears, it might be a little premature, a
- 28:39Speaker 3: really good season last year. And then the Lions, I
- 28:41Speaker 3: can't tell if their window is closed or they're right
- 28:43Speaker 3: back in the thick of things. Of those three, I'd
- 28:46Speaker 3: pick the Lions. I honestly would.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I think they really kind of focus on themselves this season.
- 28:50Speaker 1: They really didn't have joint practices with anybody. It was
- 28:52Speaker 1: really like Let's focus on us. I think the offensive
- 28:55Speaker 1: line is back to what it's been in past years.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Jameer Gibbs could be Offensive Player of the Year. Jared
- 28:59Speaker 1: Goff is so underrated. Can the defense stay healthy? That's
- 29:02Speaker 1: such a huge.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Part of this.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I think the Lions might have the best go of
- 29:06Speaker 1: it out of that division of a team that could
- 29:08Speaker 1: come out of the NFC.
- 29:09Speaker 2: James, really appreciate the time. Real quick, I gave you
- 29:11Speaker 2: a choice. Phillies, World Series win. Ohio State Buckeyes, another
- 29:15Speaker 2: national title. Which one are you picking? Oh, God.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I'll go Phillies World Series ring. That works for the organization.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Would love to see him get a ring again after 08.
- 29:23Speaker 1: So I'll go Phillies over Ohio State.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Man, that was painful. That was tough for me.
- 29:28Speaker 3: That was really tough for me. We got Texas this weekend?
- 29:30Speaker 2: Oh my God. Oh, right. Of course. All right, James,
- 29:33Speaker 2: we'll talk to you throughout the season. Thanks for the time.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Appreciate it, buddy. Take care, guys.
- 29:37Speaker 3: That was fun.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:39Speaker 3: You know, I think what's interesting what he mentioned about
- 29:41Speaker 3: denver it does feel like denver is still lightly respected
- 29:45Speaker 3: they could have got it last year the defensive backs
- 29:47Speaker 3: are awesome the defensive line's awesome.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah no i'm i gotta be honest we're gonna
- 29:50Speaker 2: do our super bowl picks in a little bit looking
- 29:53Speaker 2: pretty hard looking pretty hard to colorado.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Okay, don't tease it. Don't tease it. All right, let's
- 29:57Speaker 3: get to some not-so-fast predictions. We're doing it all day
- 30:00Speaker 3: on not-so-fast. The Offensive Rookie of the Year and the
- 30:02Speaker 3: Defensive Rookie of the Year. The O-Roy and the D-Roy. Pearl,
- 30:06Speaker 3: you go first. Offensive.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Okay, it's not a great offensive rookie class. In fact,
- 30:10Speaker 2: it's not a great draft class overall. You don't want
- 30:12Speaker 2: to pick the most obvious choice here, but I'll tell you,
- 30:14Speaker 2: I looked at the past Offensive Rookie of the Year winners.
- 30:17Speaker 2: There were a lot of top ten picks. So I'm
- 30:20Speaker 2: going to look mainly at the top ten, and that
- 30:21Speaker 2: would be Jeremiah Love and Carnell Tate. Those are my
- 30:24Speaker 2: top two guys. I know it's obvious. I'm going to
- 30:28Speaker 2: ride the obvious pick. Jeremiah Love is going to get
- 30:30Speaker 2: 1,000 yards in Arizona. They're not going to win a
- 30:32Speaker 2: ton of games. In fact, I don't know if they're
- 30:35Speaker 2: going to win more than four or five games. That'll
- 30:36Speaker 2: be enough. Love wins the offensive rookie.
- 30:39Speaker 3: He's definitely going to get the touches out there. I
- 30:40Speaker 3: don't know if they're going to be able to block
- 30:41Speaker 3: for him. I think he's going to catch more than run.
- 30:43Speaker 3: I'm also going with a Notre Dame running back. Jadarian Price,
- 30:47Speaker 3: Seahawks rookie running back. I love Jadarian Price. Here's what
- 30:50Speaker 3: I like about them. The Seahawks let Kenneth Walker III go.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Now it's Ken Walker. And they bring in Jadarian Price
- 30:56Speaker 3: late in the first round. He is a cheaper option
- 30:58Speaker 3: for the next four years at that position, even though
- 31:00Speaker 3: he's a first-round pick. Jadarian Price in college, he never
- 31:03Speaker 3: had 200 carries in the season because Jeremiah Love did
- 31:05Speaker 3: the lion's share of the carry. He is a low-mileage option.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Jadarian Price, my rookie of the year. He averaged six
- 31:10Speaker 3: yards a carry in everything.
- 31:12Speaker 2: How do you know that's a good thing? We've never
- 31:13Speaker 2: seen him be a workhorse. Also, Seattle loves to split carries.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Derrick Henry was a low-mileage guy in college for most
- 31:18Speaker 3: of his career. I'm big on the low. You know
- 31:20Speaker 3: I like low-mileage.
- 31:21Speaker 2: You're already going Derrick Henry? You're going Derrick Henry.
- 31:23Speaker 3: I got high-mileage cars, low-mileage running backs. That's my motto.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I just worry Zach Charbonnet is going to come
- 31:28Speaker 2: back eventually. I looked pretty hard at Price, but love.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I mean, who else? I know they have other running
- 31:34Speaker 2: backs there. They have to push Love. I feel pretty good.
- 31:38Speaker 2: And who started in their game?
- 31:40Speaker 1: Love.
- 31:41Speaker 3: You're going with Love. You always do.
- 31:43Speaker 4: You're a lover.
- 31:43Speaker 3: All right, let's get to it. The defensive rookie of
- 31:45Speaker 3: the year. I will go first.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:47Speaker 3: You know I'm a fan of short-armed people. You know me.
- 31:49Speaker 3: You're a long-armed guy, big wingspan. Me, not so much.
- 31:52Speaker 3: That's my tease here. Reuben Bain, the defensive end for
- 31:55Speaker 3: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was awesome with the Miami
- 31:58Speaker 3: Hurricanes last year. This guy is purely a pass rusher.
- 32:01Speaker 3: He's not there to do other things. And those guys
- 32:04Speaker 3: are the guys who get eight, nine, or ten sacks
- 32:06Speaker 3: as a rookie and just take the Defensive Rookie of
- 32:08Speaker 3: the Year award. Sacks get you the award. I'm going
- 32:11Speaker 3: Reuben Bain, short arms. but he's going to be able
- 32:13Speaker 3: to reach the trophy when he gets it.
- 32:15Speaker 2: But how is he going to get to the quarterback
- 32:16Speaker 2: with those little T-Rex arms?
- 32:17Speaker 3: The T-Rex arms are fine because he's running like this
- 32:19Speaker 3: and pushing people out.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Todd Bowles' defense, they sort of spread out the production.
- 32:24Speaker 2: I'm going to a defense that is going to have
- 32:26Speaker 2: big sack numbers this year, believe it or not. That's
- 32:28Speaker 2: the New York Jets. And David Bailey, to me, when
- 32:30Speaker 2: you watched college football last year, there was one pass
- 32:33Speaker 2: rusher that stood out. It was Bailey by far. Now listen,
- 32:36Speaker 2: I'm going obvious. I'm picking the number two overall pick
- 32:38Speaker 2: and the number three overall pick. I got David Bailey
- 32:40Speaker 2: for defensive rookie. I wish I didn't like your pick
- 32:42Speaker 2: so much, but it's a great pick. He's got longer arms, Paul.
- 32:45Speaker 3: He has longer arms, but I don't know if he's
- 32:48Speaker 3: a better person than Reuben Bain.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:50Speaker 3: If that matters.
- 32:51Speaker 2: All right, coming up next, we have the Clip Joy.
- 32:54Speaker 2: The Western Michigan-Michigan fallout continues on the Dan Pachter Show.
- 32:58Speaker 2: We'll get into it. Not so fast.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Back on Not So Fast with Paps and Perloff, getting
- 33:02Speaker 3: you ready for football tonight this is our little not
- 33:04Speaker 3: so fast tailgate not really out of hand yet it's
- 33:07Speaker 3: kind of ramping up yeah we got what eight hours
- 33:10Speaker 3: eight hours to go but we're ready we're marathon guys
- 33:12Speaker 3: all right this is the clip joint the good bad
- 33:14Speaker 3: and ugly that was booger mcfarland of espn joining dan
- 33:16Speaker 3: patrick earlier and it's nice that they could have a
- 33:19Speaker 3: nice little debate there but dan just couldn't convince booger
- 33:22Speaker 3: to go the other way later he said what if
- 33:24Speaker 3: we're lsu he goes If this were LSU, I'd be
- 33:26Speaker 3: stuck on the table. So that was a good back
- 33:28Speaker 3: and forth.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Yeah, Dan and Booger always had great chemistry. I thought
- 33:32Speaker 2: he was going to get Booger. I was watching that
- 33:33Speaker 2: interview glued. But the problem is you're going to have
- 33:36Speaker 2: to take a win away from Michigan, and that has
- 33:38Speaker 2: ramifications as well. Not even talking about the Michigan fan base.
- 33:42Speaker 2: I actually, I side with Booger. I would not change
- 33:45Speaker 2: a result.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm with you from the standpoint of it's tough
- 33:48Speaker 3: to do because it sets some type of weird precedent.
- 33:50Speaker 3: But this game is going to become legendary. It's almost like,
- 33:53Speaker 3: If they just won the game, it's a great upset.
- 33:56Speaker 3: And we would have moved on in about a day.
- 33:57Speaker 3: We just said, like, wow, Western Michigan, what a great win.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Slow start for University of Michigan. But it wouldn't be
- 34:03Speaker 3: this thing. And it's a thing forever. And, you know,
- 34:05Speaker 3: it's funny. It's a long way away. But 2029, your
- 34:08Speaker 3: Western Michigan Broncos are back in Ann Arbor.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Oh, wow. I mean, luckily it was this game, too.
- 34:13Speaker 2: What if this was Michigan-Ohio State? What if this was
- 34:16Speaker 2: a playoff game? So now the whole sport got a warning.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Next time we get down to zero on the clock,
- 34:23Speaker 2: You know, you follow what's on TV. Awesome, yeah. I
- 34:27Speaker 2: love that interview, and I love how close Booger came
- 34:30Speaker 2: to actually flip-flopping, but the result stands.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Now, here's a game that maybe this coach does not
- 34:35Speaker 3: want to talk about anymore, but he has to. Dabo Sweeney,
- 34:37Speaker 3: the head coach at Clemson, they got absolutely lit up
- 34:40Speaker 3: the other day against LSU. Well, you know, he decided
- 34:43Speaker 3: now to put up a fight. He put up a
- 34:45Speaker 3: fight with a press member in the press conference.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Do you regret anything about your off-season roster construction right now?
- 34:54Speaker 4: Chapel, you come with all these questions.
- 34:56Speaker 2: I'll tell you, you're the gotcha guy. No, I don't.
- 35:00Speaker 3: I don't, man.
- 35:01Speaker 4: I regret being 0-1-1 right now.
- 35:03Speaker 3: I regret that.
- 35:05Speaker 4: But, no, we're– can you ask me that at the
- 35:09Speaker 4: end of the season? You know, the season isn't over.
- 35:12Speaker 4: I mean, we've got one game. We've got 11 more.
- 35:14Speaker 3: What if we go 11-1-1?
- 35:16Speaker 4: You promised me you asked me that then?
- 35:18Speaker 2: Okay, good. I'll answer it. All right?
- 35:20Speaker 4: But I'm not answering questions like that, you know, Chapel.
- 35:23Speaker 4: I know that's your role and that's in this environment,
- 35:26Speaker 4: you know, to be the guy that wants to create
- 35:29Speaker 4: all the controversy and ask the controversial questions. If that's
- 35:33Speaker 4: who you are, that's fine.
- 35:35Speaker 2: I get it. But I'll answer that. We played one game.
- 35:39Speaker 2: One game.
- 35:40Speaker 3: All right? Did you play football?
- 35:44Speaker 2: No. Okay.
- 35:44Speaker 3: Well, they give you 12 games.
- 35:47Speaker 4: And at the end of the year, you count them up.
- 35:49Speaker 3: All right.
- 35:50Speaker 4: And, you know, that's when that's when those type of
- 35:54Speaker 4: questions are fair to me. You know, not after one
- 35:58Speaker 4: game to maybe the best team in the country.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Dabo was doing OK until he went to the did
- 36:05Speaker 2: you play football? We know that doesn't end well for
- 36:07Speaker 2: an interview subject.
- 36:08Speaker 3: And.
- 36:09Speaker 2: The guy who asked the question isn't creating the controversy.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Clemson is creating the controversy by getting killed by LSU.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I'm with you. Dabo had me for a while. Like, hey,
- 36:17Speaker 3: calm down. He went the old Aaron Rodgers, relax. It's
- 36:20Speaker 3: not over yet. Now, you were 7-6 last year. You
- 36:23Speaker 3: just got absolutely annihilated on national TV. You can't go
- 36:26Speaker 3: scorched earth. But when he went, did you play football?
- 36:29Speaker 3: If I were there, I would have said, yeah, I
- 36:30Speaker 3: was a backup defensive tackle for the Glenwood Cougars in
- 36:32Speaker 3: 7th and 8th grade. What about that, Dabo? I don't
- 36:35Speaker 3: know what he would have said there.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's so funny. Dabo was surprised by the question.
- 36:38Speaker 2: They just got absolutely blown out by LSU. Funny thing
- 36:41Speaker 2: about Clemson, last year they had a pretty good roster.
- 36:43Speaker 2: There were a lot of pro players on that roster.
- 36:46Speaker 2: So this question about this year's roster construction, not only
- 36:48Speaker 2: is it fair, I think it's necessary for that fan base.
- 36:51Speaker 3: And the funny thing is, Clemson fans are getting used
- 36:53Speaker 3: to losing in Week 1. He's done this a lot
- 36:55Speaker 3: the past five years, as you saw right there. But
- 36:57Speaker 3: I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt
- 36:59Speaker 3: for about a month. Because he can clean this up
- 37:01Speaker 3: with three straight wins.
- 37:03Speaker 2: I've been consistent all along. I think Dabo's on his
- 37:05Speaker 2: way out.
- 37:06Speaker 3: I think so, too.
- 37:07Speaker 2: I think that he is not really ready for this
- 37:10Speaker 2: era of NIL. I think he doesn't want to change.
- 37:13Speaker 2: He doesn't want to change with the times. He might
- 37:14Speaker 2: as well do what Nick Saban did and just leave.
- 37:16Speaker 3: What a wild career turn. Because six or seven years ago,
- 37:18Speaker 3: he was the coach in waiting for Alabama. It was
- 37:20Speaker 3: just like, they're going to hand off Alabama football to him. Now,
- 37:23Speaker 3: he's going to have to restart his career at a
- 37:26Speaker 3: tier lower if he goes somewhere else next year.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't expect that to happen. All right,
- 37:29Speaker 2: let's go to the NFL. Aaron Donald did not travel
- 37:32Speaker 2: to the Rams in Australia for their opener tomorrow night.
- 37:34Speaker 2: And Niners coach Kyle Shanahan was quite happy when he
- 37:37Speaker 2: learned the news.
- 37:40Speaker 3: I just smiled and said, that's good. So we're going
- 37:43Speaker 3: to have to see him eventually.
- 37:44Speaker 2: We play them twice.
- 37:47Speaker 3: But I was hoping he won it. I was preparing
- 37:49Speaker 3: for the worst.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Glad that we don't have to see him this week.
- 37:54Speaker 3: I love the honesty. Nobody wants to face Aaron Donald.
- 37:57Speaker 3: He's not trying to be one of those tough guy
- 37:58Speaker 3: coaches like, we'll take on any comers, we'll take on
- 38:00Speaker 3: all channels. No, and I wish Miles Garrett would stay
- 38:03Speaker 3: home and rest with him.
- 38:04Speaker 2: I don't know. I think that Kyle Shanahan's a little
- 38:06Speaker 2: punch drunk from the time zone, Chase.
- 38:08Speaker 3: And I like it.
- 38:08Speaker 2: But he was trying to use all this Rams hype
- 38:11Speaker 2: as bulletin board material coming into the week. You know
- 38:13Speaker 2: that he was in the locker room saying, did you
- 38:15Speaker 2: see all these people were picking the Rams? So I
- 38:17Speaker 2: don't know why he's all of a sudden being like, oh,
- 38:19Speaker 2: I'm happy Aaron Donald isn't here. And let's be honest,
- 38:21Speaker 2: Aaron Donald just got to camp. Was he going to
- 38:23Speaker 2: make that big a difference?
- 38:24Speaker 3: I think so. I don't think he's going to be
- 38:26Speaker 3: Miles Garrett week one. But I think Aaron Donald, what
- 38:28Speaker 3: an interesting position to be in for your final season
- 38:31Speaker 3: where you have this negotiated employee where I'm not going
- 38:33Speaker 3: to go here. I'm going to play at home. If
- 38:35Speaker 3: we get to the Super Bowl, I get to play
- 38:37Speaker 3: at home. If we get home field advantage, I get
- 38:38Speaker 3: to stay at home. He's going to be going to
- 38:40Speaker 3: PTA meetings on Tuesdays on.
- 38:41Speaker 2: His day off.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Aaron Donald has all the balls in his court, and
- 38:44Speaker 3: he's going to make $ 20- plus million to play 21 games.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and obviously going to Australia would be a huge
- 38:51Speaker 2: burden physically on a guy who's 35, although I did
- 38:54Speaker 2: see the play, and it looks very, very nice.
- 38:56Speaker 3: It does look comfy. Guys like us would have gone.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 38:58Speaker 3: All right, let's get to it. It's time for our
- 39:00Speaker 3: next NFL pick, getting you ready for the season. We
- 39:03Speaker 3: did some Opoi, some Depoi. Now it's time for the
- 39:05Speaker 3: NFL most valuable player. I'm going to go first, Perloff.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Now, you know the MVP is about timing, who you are,
- 39:12Speaker 3: when you are. Here's some people who can't win it.
- 39:16Speaker 3: I don't think Josh Allen can win it because he
- 39:18Speaker 3: hasn't advanced deep in the playoffs, and it's going to
- 39:20Speaker 3: be a ding against him. He could have another great
- 39:22Speaker 3: regular season. Lamar Jackson, he can win it, but it's
- 39:25Speaker 3: going to be tough because he's got a couple. Patrick
- 39:28Speaker 3: Mahomes could definitely win it because he missed a lot
- 39:29Speaker 3: of last season. And if he has one of those
- 39:31Speaker 3: 40 touchdown years, Herbert, of course. My pick is Joe
- 39:34Speaker 3: Burrow because it's his time. I think the entire NFL
- 39:37Speaker 3: media would love to hand it to Joe Burrow. New story.
- 39:40Speaker 3: Stay healthy. 4,300 yards, 44 touchdowns.
- 39:44Speaker 2: The award is yours. Listen, Joe Burrow is obviously... one
- 39:48Speaker 2: of the best quarterbacks in the league, strong case. But
- 39:51Speaker 2: can he stay healthy, Paul? That's it. It's been a while.
- 39:54Speaker 2: And can the Bengals be a winning team? Now, to
- 39:56Speaker 2: be MVP, you have to have double-digit wins. That's an
- 39:59Speaker 2: absolute necessity. So the Bengals' defense falling apart could actually
- 40:02Speaker 2: cost Burrow. I am actually going to do something a
- 40:07Speaker 2: little controversial. All last week I was saying there's too
- 40:09Speaker 2: much hype around the Cowboys. But if the Cowboys get
- 40:13Speaker 2: to 11 wins, which I expect them to do, Then
- 40:16Speaker 2: Dak Prescott is your NFL MVP. He came in second
- 40:19Speaker 2: in the voting in 2023. Last year, he had great numbers,
- 40:23Speaker 2: 30 touchdowns, 10 interceptions. He could put up huge offensive
- 40:28Speaker 2: numbers here, Paul. If Dak Prescott throws 40 touchdowns, which
- 40:31Speaker 2: is very possible with receivers like Lamb and Pickens, stronger
- 40:35Speaker 2: running game. I don't know if the defense is fixed.
- 40:37Speaker 2: You know what? If the defense is not totally fixed,
- 40:39Speaker 2: that means more offense for Dallas. I think they win
- 40:42Speaker 2: double-digit games. I'm actually picking them to win the NFC
- 40:45Speaker 2: East over the Eagles. Both are playoff teams. But if
- 40:49Speaker 2: you get 11 wins with Dallas and Dak has big numbers,
- 40:52Speaker 2: I think they want to give it to Dak. The
- 40:53Speaker 2: media likes Dak Prescott. And you're right. Josh Allen already
- 40:56Speaker 2: got his. Lamar's gotten twice. Burrow, I'm just not sure
- 41:00Speaker 2: the team is good enough. I think the defense sells
- 41:03Speaker 2: major question marks, and that might cost them. I think
- 41:06Speaker 2: Dak hits all the right spots.
- 41:07Speaker 3: Dude, you are more all-in than Jerry Jones is on
- 41:10Speaker 3: his team. You're going to be the guy sitting next
- 41:11Speaker 3: to him in the booth cleaning his glasses one day.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Well, for me, the hype about the Cowboys was the playoffs.
- 41:16Speaker 2: We've seen them go 12-5 and then bow out early
- 41:18Speaker 2: in the playoffs time and time again. So when people
- 41:20Speaker 2: are talking about Super Bowl picks, I do not want
- 41:22Speaker 2: to see Dallas. But if you're talking about awards, which
- 41:24Speaker 2: are based on the regular season, let's go Dak.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Wow, I've never seen someone all-in. I'm surprised you didn't
- 41:28Speaker 3: pick Caleb Downs as well. I'll give you the do-over
- 41:30Speaker 3: on that. All right, coming up next, it's time for
- 41:33Speaker 3: our Super Bowl picks. Vegas is waiting. Vegas wants to know.
- 41:36Speaker 3: It's going to set the lines. NSF Super Bowl picks next.
- 41:39Speaker 3: Stick around.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast, Perloff and Paps. I
- 41:44Speaker 2: love this. NBC Sports logo, NFL kickoff week. Let's go
- 41:48Speaker 2: over some of the luminaries there. We've got Mike Florio,
- 41:51Speaker 2: Mike Tomlin, of course, DP. Then there's Paul Paps and
- 41:55Speaker 2: Andrew Perloff.
- 41:56Speaker 3: You know, I just checked. I assume you photoshopped us
- 41:58Speaker 3: into that picture. That's an official NBC Sports Now photo.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Yeah, why are we the same height, though, Paul?
- 42:03Speaker 3: They did take you down three or four inches.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Yeah, but I've got to tell you, it gets me
- 42:07Speaker 2: so fired up.
- 42:08Speaker 3: We're happy to be there. We're just happy to be there.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Well, we're also happy with these football seasons here. We've
- 42:13Speaker 2: been doing predictions all show long. We are getting now
- 42:17Speaker 2: to the finale. Super Bowl pick. By the way, DP
- 42:21Speaker 2: went today. He went Broncos over Eagles.
- 42:23Speaker 3: That's gutsy.
- 42:24Speaker 2: It's gutsy. I'm an Eagles fan. I was happy about that.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Dan is pretty accurate with these picks. But we're going
- 42:30Speaker 2: to give it our best shot, too. Paul, you want
- 42:31Speaker 2: to start off?
- 42:32Speaker 3: I'll go first. I am not picking the Rams or
- 42:34Speaker 3: the Bills. I decided to go away from those. Based
- 42:36Speaker 3: off last year, nobody saw the Seahawks coming. Nobody saw
- 42:40Speaker 3: the Patriots coming. I wanted to go a little off
- 42:42Speaker 3: the board, not just to be cool, not to pander,
- 42:45Speaker 3: but I'm going Lions over Bengals to win the Super Bowl,
- 42:48Speaker 3: and here's why. The Lions feel like they're a bit due.
- 42:51Speaker 3: The Bengals feel like they're a bit due. When they
- 42:53Speaker 3: put their teams together, I love the Dexter Lawrence pickup
- 42:55Speaker 3: for the Bengals. I like the Lions lineup every year.
- 42:57Speaker 3: I think they're a Super Bowl contender every year. They're
- 43:00Speaker 3: due to win it. They've got to win it. Same
- 43:02Speaker 3: with the Bengals. It's the due bowl.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Okay, the Brooklyn Nets are due to win an NBA title.
- 43:06Speaker 2: That doesn't mean it's going to happen, Paul.
- 43:07Speaker 3: That's a warm take.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Honestly, my big concern about the Lions is Ben Johnson.
- 43:11Speaker 2: I think the best coach in that building is in
- 43:13Speaker 2: Chicago right now. Can I just ask, were you tempted
- 43:17Speaker 2: to pick the Bears?
- 43:18Speaker 3: No, I almost like Bears fans are used to bad
- 43:21Speaker 3: things happening, and to pick the Bears to win the
- 43:23Speaker 3: Super Bowl would be counter to the Bears fans' mentality.
- 43:25Speaker 2: And I also don't know about that coach in Cincinnati,
- 43:28Speaker 2: Zach Taylor, but I do like your pick a lot.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Give it to me.
- 43:30Speaker 3: That would be amazing.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Okay. No one can accuse me of copying Dan Patrick,
- 43:36Speaker 2: because I emailed our producer, Scott Messina, earlier in the day.
- 43:39Speaker 2: I have the Denver Broncos defeating the L.A. Rams. Wow. Listen,
- 43:44Speaker 2: the Rams hype is obviously real. I know the odds
- 43:48Speaker 2: are that the favorite rarely wins at all. That's why
- 43:51Speaker 2: I have them losing to Denver. Denver has everything. They
- 43:53Speaker 2: have most of their defense back, and their defense was
- 43:55Speaker 2: very elite last year. This year, Bo Nix is back,
- 43:58Speaker 2: and he's got a new coordinator, Davis Webb. Getting in
- 44:00Speaker 2: the plays really fast is what everyone's saying. The offense
- 44:04Speaker 2: is humming. Add Jalen Waddell for a vertical element. I
- 44:06Speaker 2: just don't see the flaw. The biggest concern I have, Paul,
- 44:09Speaker 2: is the schedule. It's going to be tough. They're in
- 44:12Speaker 2: the AFC West with the Chargers and the Chiefs, not
- 44:14Speaker 2: so much the Raiders. They have a very, very tough
- 44:17Speaker 2: opening part to the season, the first six games. I
- 44:19Speaker 2: really like Bo Nix, and, of course, I like Sean Payton.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I am a little worried that I'm going to be
- 44:24Speaker 2: the mush on Dan's pick, but I've liked the Broncos
- 44:28Speaker 2: all offseason long. I thought they would have made it
- 44:30Speaker 2: last year if Bo Nix had stayed healthy, and they
- 44:32Speaker 2: almost made it with Jared Stidham. So I got Denver
- 44:34Speaker 2: over the Rams.
- 44:35Speaker 3: All right, love your pick, love the waddle pickup. That's
- 44:37Speaker 3: kind of quiet and sneaky. It's time for a little
- 44:39Speaker 3: leftovers here on Not So Fast. Always room for leftovers.
- 44:43Speaker 3: This is a cool thing. We love the Heisman here
- 44:45Speaker 3: on the show. This is called the Heisman Hopefuls Fan Vote.
- 44:48Speaker 3: It just went live a couple hours ago. You probably
- 44:50Speaker 3: already voted for Malachi Tony. Heisman.com slash hopefuls. You can
- 44:55Speaker 3: vote for the top three players. It's a true Heisman vote.
- 44:57Speaker 3: And the fan has a voice this year.
- 44:59Speaker 2: And.
- 45:00Speaker 3: You don't have to just vote for quarterbacks or wide
- 45:01Speaker 3: receivers or running backs. You can vote for a defensive
- 45:04Speaker 3: tackle if you like.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, I've been all over Malachi, Tony.
- 45:07Speaker 2: I love, there's a player at Texas, Colin Simmons. I
- 45:11Speaker 2: love the defensive end as well. Yeah, no, this is
- 45:14Speaker 2: a great year for college football too. There's so many
- 45:16Speaker 2: stars to vote for. I'm going to go back often.
- 45:19Speaker 2: But Malachi, Tony, I got to tell you, right now
- 45:21Speaker 2: he's number one, Paul.
- 45:22Speaker 3: Every Friday on the show, we go getting the Heisman.
- 45:24Speaker 3: We'll do that on Friday and not so fast. All right,
- 45:26Speaker 3: time for a little constructive criticism. What do you think
- 45:28Speaker 3: about our hair? or commentary, or sports. Here we go.
- 45:31Speaker 3: A little constructive criticism, Pearl.
- 45:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 45:34Speaker 3: First one up. Which quarterback take a step forward or back? Allen, Burrow, Jackson,
- 45:41Speaker 3: et cetera.
- 45:41Speaker 2: All right.
- 45:41Speaker 3: How about a step back? Out of those three, a
- 45:43Speaker 3: step back.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Okay. Well, Allen's got the same offense coordinator, so he's
- 45:46Speaker 2: going to be the same. Burrow is lining up for
- 45:48Speaker 2: a good season. I've got to tell you, Lamar Jackson,
- 45:51Speaker 2: because of the new offense, Declan Doyle's there, unproven. I've
- 45:54Speaker 2: seen a lot of really strong analytical people say that
- 45:57Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson is not going to have the same kind
- 45:59Speaker 2: of stat season that he did as an MVP. That
- 46:01Speaker 2: doesn't mean the team is going to be worse, but
- 46:03Speaker 2: I do not expect Lamar Jackson to hold on the
- 46:06Speaker 2: ball and make all the wow plays. I think they're
- 46:07Speaker 2: going to be a little more conservative on offense.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Okay, more constructive criticism tomorrow. Send in your comments on Twitter.
- 46:12Speaker 3: We'll get to them on the air. It's time for
- 46:14Speaker 3: something to put you in a good moodie, as if
- 46:16Speaker 3: you're not already with Football Tonight on NBC. Here is
- 46:18Speaker 3: the feel-good. Little tennis last night, Pearl. My guy, Francis Tiafoe,
- 46:25Speaker 3: consoling Alex Mickelson after beating him. Look at that. Mickelson
- 46:29Speaker 3: kind of broke down. Great match, great comeback by Tiafoe.
- 46:33Speaker 3: And then late night. This match started at 11 p.m. Eastern.
- 46:37Speaker 3: Ben Shelton against Alcaraz went to 3.30 in the morning.
- 46:41Speaker 3: We were up and watching, of course.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I was really touched by Tiafoe because his opponent
- 46:45Speaker 2: has been serving for the match on the third point.
- 46:47Speaker 2: They're old friends, both Americans. Tennis is grueling because you
- 46:51Speaker 2: work for four hours and someone's got to lose. Now
- 46:54Speaker 2: I'm all about the American's ball. Let's go.
- 46:56Speaker 3: That is some late-night sports, though. I mean, playing at
- 46:59Speaker 3: 3.30 in the morning, I guess you just got to
- 47:00Speaker 3: ignore it like Shanahan.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, it's tough on us, too. We're the ones
- 47:06Speaker 2: who suffer because we have to watch this.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Yeah, think about us staying up all night playing with
- 47:09Speaker 3: the remote. All right, coming up tonight, NBC Sports, Pat Seahawks,
- 47:12Speaker 3: who you got?
- 47:13Speaker 2: I am going Seahawks. They won on a neutral field.
- 47:15Speaker 2: They'll definitely win in the home field.
- 47:17Speaker 3: I'm going to go Patriots in a close one, hopefully overtime,
- 47:20Speaker 3: so we can be even more tired tomorrow. All right,
- 47:22Speaker 3: stick around. More football coverage tomorrow on the Dan Patrick Show,
- 47:25Speaker 3: 9 to noon Eastern on NBC Sports Now. And then,
- 47:28Speaker 3: not so fast, every day, right here on NBC Sports Now.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Send in your thoughts. Send in your comments. They'll make
- 47:32Speaker 3: the air. Football time.
- 47:34Speaker 2: Yeah, baby. Let's go Broncos.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Dun, dun, dun, dun.
