Speaker 1: How Thor lost his hammer? Come, LOGI are you ready?
• 0:31
Speaker 1: My goats are eager to be off, cried Thor as
• 0:36
Speaker 1: he sprang into his chariot, and away they went, thundering
• 0:41
Speaker 1: over the hills. All day long they journeyed, and at
• 0:46
Speaker 1: night they lay down to rest by the side of
• 0:48
Speaker 1: a brook. When Border, the bright sun god, awoke them
• 0:54
Speaker 1: in the morning, the first thing thought it was to
• 0:58
Speaker 1: reach out for meaner magic hammer, which he had carefully
• 1:03
Speaker 1: laid by his side the night before. Why, Loki cried,
• 1:09
Speaker 1: he alas my hammer is gone. Those evil frost giants
• 1:15
Speaker 1: must have stolen it from me while I slept. How
• 1:18
Speaker 1: shall we hold Asgard against them without my hammer? They
• 1:22
Speaker 1: will surely take our stronghold. We must go quickly and
• 1:27
Speaker 1: find it, replied Loki. Let us ask Friar to lend
• 1:31
Speaker 1: us her falcon garment. Now, the goddess Friar had a
• 1:37
Speaker 1: wonderful garment made of falcon feathers, and whoever wore it
• 1:43
Speaker 1: looked just like a bird. As you may suppose, this
• 1:48
Speaker 1: was sometimes a very useful thing. So Thor and Loki
• 1:53
Speaker 1: went quickly back to Asgard and drove with all speed
• 1:58
Speaker 1: to Friar's palace, where they found her sitting among her maidens.
• 2:04
Speaker 1: As God is in great danger, said Thor, And we
• 2:08
Speaker 1: have come to you, fair goddess, to ask if you
• 2:11
Speaker 1: will lend us your falcon garment, for my hammer has
• 2:14
Speaker 1: been carried off and we must go in search of it.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: Surely answered the Friar, I would lend you my falcon cloak,
• 2:23
Speaker 1: even if it were made of gold and silver. Then
• 2:29
Speaker 1: Loki quickly dressed himself in Friar's garment and flew away
• 2:34
Speaker 1: to the land of the Frost Giants, where he found
• 2:38
Speaker 1: their king making collars of gold for his dogs and
• 2:43
Speaker 1: combing his horses. As Loki came near, he looked up
• 2:48
Speaker 1: and said, ah, Loki, how fair the mighty gods in
• 2:55
Speaker 1: ask God the issue are in great trouble, replied Loki,
• 3:01
Speaker 1: and I am sent to fetch the hammer of Thor.
• 3:05
Speaker 1: And do you think I am going to be foolish
• 3:09
Speaker 1: enough to give it back to you. After I have
• 3:12
Speaker 1: had all the trouble of getting it into my power,
• 3:17
Speaker 1: said the King. I have buried it deep, deep down
• 3:22
Speaker 1: in the earth, and there is only one way by
• 3:26
Speaker 1: which you can get it again. You must bring me
• 3:30
Speaker 1: the goddess Friar, to be my wife. Loki did not
• 3:36
Speaker 1: know what to say to this, for he felt sure
• 3:39
Speaker 1: that Friar would never be willing to go away from
• 3:43
Speaker 1: Asgard to live among the fierce giants. But as he
• 3:48
Speaker 1: saw no chance of getting the hammer, he flew back
• 3:51
Speaker 1: to Asgard to see what could be done. Thor was
• 3:56
Speaker 1: anxiously looking out for him. What new do you bring, Loki,
• 4:02
Speaker 1: cried he. Have you brought me my hammer again? Alas no,
• 4:09
Speaker 1: said Loki, I bring only a message from the giant King.
• 4:14
Speaker 1: He will not give up your hammer until you persuade
• 4:17
Speaker 1: Friar to marry him. Then Thor and Loki went together
• 4:23
Speaker 1: to Fryar's palace, and the fair goddess greeted them kindly,
• 4:29
Speaker 1: But when she heard their errand and found that they
• 4:32
Speaker 1: wished her to marry the cruel giant, she was very
• 4:37
Speaker 1: angry and said to Thor, you should not have been
• 4:41
Speaker 1: so careless as to lose your hammer. It is all
• 4:45
Speaker 1: your own fault that it has gone, and I will
• 4:49
Speaker 1: never marry the giant to help you get it again.
• 4:54
Speaker 1: Thor then went to tell Father Odin, who called the
• 4:58
Speaker 1: meeting off all the Yesha, for it was a very
• 5:01
Speaker 1: serious matter they were to consider. If the King of
• 5:06
Speaker 1: the Giants only knew the power of the mighty hammer,
• 5:10
Speaker 1: he might storm Asgard and carry off the fair Friar
• 5:15
Speaker 1: to be his bride. So the Escha met together in
• 5:20
Speaker 1: their great Judgment Hall in the Palace of Glad. Time
• 5:25
Speaker 1: long and anxiously they talked over their peril, trying to
• 5:29
Speaker 1: find some plan for saving Asgard from these enemies. At last,
• 5:35
Speaker 1: tim Dal, the faithful watchmen of the Rainbow Bridge, proposed
• 5:40
Speaker 1: a plan. Let us dress Thor, said, he in Friar's robes,
• 5:47
Speaker 1: braid his hair, and let him wear Friar's wonderful neckness
• 5:52
Speaker 1: and the bridal veil. No, indeed, cried Thor angrily, you
• 6:01
Speaker 1: would all laugh at me in a woman's dress. I
• 6:04
Speaker 1: will do no such thing. We must find some other way.
• 6:10
Speaker 1: But when no other way could be found, at last,
• 6:14
Speaker 1: though was persuaded to try Himdau's plan, and the Asha
• 6:18
Speaker 1: went to work to dress the mighty from the God
• 6:22
Speaker 1: like a bride. He was the tallest of them more,
• 6:26
Speaker 1: and of course he looked very queer to them in
• 6:29
Speaker 1: his woman's clothes, but he would be small enough beside
• 6:34
Speaker 1: the giant. Then they dressed Loki to look like the
• 6:38
Speaker 1: bride's waiting maid, and the two set off for you, God,
• 6:43
Speaker 1: the stronghold of the giants. When the giant king saw
• 6:49
Speaker 1: them coming, he bat his servants mik ready the wadding
• 6:53
Speaker 1: feast and invited all his giant subjects to come and
• 6:58
Speaker 1: celebrate his marry with the lovely goddess Friar. So the
• 7:05
Speaker 1: wedding party sat down to the feast, and Thor, who
• 7:09
Speaker 1: was always a good eater, ate one ox and ate salmon,
• 7:16
Speaker 1: and drank three casks of meat. The king watched him greatly,
• 7:23
Speaker 1: surprised to see a woman eat so much, and said,
• 7:28
Speaker 1: where hast thousand such a hungry bride. But the watchful Loki,
• 7:36
Speaker 1: who stood nearby as the bride waiting maid, whispered in
• 7:41
Speaker 1: the king's ear, eight, nice has fryer fasted and would
• 7:47
Speaker 1: take no food. So inches was she to be your bride?
• 7:54
Speaker 1: This pleased the giant, and he went to a Thor,
• 7:58
Speaker 1: seeing he must his fair bride. But when he lifted
• 8:03
Speaker 1: the bridal veil, such a gleam of light shot from
• 8:08
Speaker 1: Thor's eyes that the king started back and asked why
• 8:14
Speaker 1: Friar's eyes were so sharp. Again, Loki replied, for eight
• 8:23
Speaker 1: nights the fair Friar has not slept, so greatly did
• 8:28
Speaker 1: she long to reach here. This again placed the king,
• 8:33
Speaker 1: and he said, now let the hammer be brought and
• 8:37
Speaker 1: given to the bride, for the hour has come for
• 8:41
Speaker 1: our marriage. All this time Thor was so eager to
• 8:47
Speaker 1: get his treasure back that he could hardly keep still,
• 8:52
Speaker 1: and if it had not been for what the wily
• 8:55
Speaker 1: Loki said, it might have been found out too soon.
• 9:00
Speaker 1: But at last the precious hammer was brought and handed
• 9:04
Speaker 1: to the bride, as was always the custom at weddings.
• 9:09
Speaker 1: As soon as Thor grasps it in his hand, he
• 9:12
Speaker 1: threw off his woman's robe and stood out before the
• 9:17
Speaker 1: astonished giants. Then did the mighty Thunderer sweep down his foes,
• 9:24
Speaker 1: and many of the cruel Frost giants were slain. Once more,
• 9:30
Speaker 1: the sacred city of Asgard was saved from danger. For
• 9:34
Speaker 1: Thor was its defender, and he was careful never again
• 9:39
Speaker 1: to let his magic hammer be taken from him. Besides
• 9:44
Speaker 1: the hammer, Thor had two other precious things, a spelt
• 9:49
Speaker 1: of strength, which doubled his power when he tightened it,
• 9:55
Speaker 1: and his iron glove, which he put on when he
• 9:59
Speaker 1: was going to throw the hammer. I am the god Thor.
• 10:05
Speaker 1: I am the war God. I am the thunderer. Here
• 10:10
Speaker 1: in my north land, my fastness and fortress rain I forever,
• 10:17
Speaker 1: Here amid iceberds, reale eye the nations. This is my hammer.
• 10:24
Speaker 1: Mena the mighty giants and sorcerers cannot withstand it. These
• 10:31
Speaker 1: are the gonness, wherewith I wieldered and hurl it afar off.
• 10:38
Speaker 1: This is my girdle. Whenever I brace it, strength is redoubled,
