• 0:05
[upbeat music] Boys and girls, moms and dads, and children of all ages, welcome to the Weekly Dose of Phat with your hosts Sven and Uncle Gomez.
• 0:35
Ringmaster Sven. Hey. [laughs] Gumo the Clown. [laughs] We're joined in the studio by JK Ludwig. Are you ready for the summer? Are you ready for the sunshine?
• 0:51
Are you ready for the birds and the bees and the butterflies and a whole lot of fooling around? Wait, we're gonna fool around? I wish I could... You know, I wish everybody could see JK dancing [laughs] when he does this.
• 1:00
Yeah, [laughs] it's kind of unsettling to myself. [laughs] Turns into a Muppet- [laughs]... right before our eyes. Hey. Hey.
• 1:11
[laughs] This here Phat Bike radio show is brought to you by the Surly Ice Cream Truck, the Black Ops Edition, because there is and never will be a new black. Keep your eyes peeled for what's next at surlybikes.com.
• 1:25
Well, Mr. JK, what's on the docket today? Dun, dun, dun, dun. Ch, ch, ch, ch, ch. Our special guest- [laughs] Is Jocelyn, is Jocelyn Gowdy representing Team Komorebi and Portland Design Works. A joy.
• 1:44
A joy. We'll have the weekly dose of fat, links from all over the interwebs, and a few words about our summer hiatus. You know what happened today? Is school's out for summer. School. Not Alice Cooper, man.
• 1:58
You- Yeah, not for my kids yet. They're still- Yeah... got a couple more days to go. And that's good. Little- Little more learning to do before they get off.
• 2:08
I'm sure that they'll, they'll be totally into it when it's 80 [laughs] degrees outside. Do you remember being a kid those last days? Like, "Ugh, let me out." [laughs] Nothing is being accomplished here.
• 2:21
[laughs] You're not teaching anything to me. Yeah. So- Yeah... this brings us to the fabulous beer segment, and for the first time ever, one of our guests actually sent us beer from across the country.
• 2:37
Is that interstate commerce? Um, I'm not gonna say how it got here. It might have been m- sent by a personal courier. Maybe. You know?
• 2:46
Or it might have been sent by the US Mail, where they ask you, "Any liq- liquid perishable," blah, blah, blah, you know? Lithium batteries? [laughs] Right. No- Those are in the top. No to all of the above.
• 2:58
So we have plastic cups, and we're... Our, the first beer we're gonna try is this Base Camp Brewing Intense IPL, which is an imperial, uh, something lager. And it's, like, in a tent intense. Yeah.
• 3:15
That's clever 'cause it's Base Camp. Yeah. I like how they worked that in. And it's got an aluminum bottle. Aluminum. Uh, do you think this is a twisty? Try and, try and pry that off- [laughs]...
• 3:27
with your, with your mandibles. No. [laughs] There's a thingamabobber right there. Yeah. Oh, hey. [laughs] You guys wanted me to open this 'cause you wanted to get the old what the hell thing going, right? What the hell?
• 3:41
Oh, God, this is the coldest freaking bottle can thingy that has ever touched my belly. Look at this. It pours not too much carbonation. It's kind of a golden, ambery,
• 3:57
lustrous- It appears to be beer colored. It's, it's a- It's a murky, dark orange brown, as one of the reviewers have noted. 6.8 alcoholcs. Oh, that's delicious. Hm, it's actually very good. Yeah. Yeah.
• 4:12
I dig it in a tent. So Jocelyn Gowdy from PDW, she sent this beer to us, and now we have to decide what we're gonna send her back. I promised her some of that, uh, jovio.com Revolution Brewing 10.6%- [laughs]...
• 4:28
mind-bending me crazy in el cabeza kind of beer. All right. Well, I think she'd appreciate that out there in Portlandia. So that was my suggestion. Maybe you two could come up with a suggestion of your own. Grain Belt.
• 4:44
[laughs] Grain Belt. I'd say something Lakefront. Really? Yeah. Lakefront IPA is always my- All right. I'm just gonna take your, your Grain Belt suggestion and turn it into maybe a New Glarus.
• 4:58
They have that, uh, they have that fancy four-pack of, of IPAs. I forget the name of their fancy IPA, but we'll send that out to you, Jocelyn. And you guys can, uh,
• 5:11
drink that and then sing more for us, 'cause they're coming on the show and they're gonna sing for us. Yeah, that'll be interesting. I... Has anybody ever sung to us before? I don't know.
• 5:23
I think we've all sung on the show. [laughs] Obviously JK did this already. [laughs] True that. In this show. Sing scream. Singing and Muppet screaming. And meatball screaming. And meatball screaming.
• 5:36
Well, it's a Muppet meatball. [laughs] So yeah, that's a tasty beer. If you wanna check it out, uh, along with the other two that we'll be getting to here later in the show. Right.
• 5:47
We might just break one out when we have Jocelyn on the phone. Well, maybe we should have a beer stop every once in a while and, uh- And say, "Now we're gonna drink this one." Right on. From you. Right.
• 5:59
[laughs] Damn, [laughs] damn right right. Right. Right on. All right, well- Well, thanks very much to Jocelyn over there from PDW, P-D-W, for the Beer Buzz this week.
• 6:11
All it took was the threat of a hiatus [laughs] and we're acting like it's the first show again. [laughs] We're like, "Uh-huh, mm-hmm, awkward silence. Weirdo" We'll cut that out later.
• 6:23
[laughs] We'll be right back with Jocelyn from Team Komorebi. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Hey, please welcome to the show Jocelyn Goudie. Welcome, Jocelyn. Hi, Fat Bike Radio. How's it going?
• 6:41
Thanks for having me on today. I really appreciate it. Yeah, excellent to have you. So, uh, Jocelyn's here to tell us about the Komorebi? Correct my pronunciation. Komorebi. Komorebi Cycling Team. Yeah. Oh, sure.
• 6:53
I was... I had it all wrong. [laughs] May- maybe s- So close... maybe start with how the group got together, um, out there on the Oregon Dunes on fat bikes, right? Yeah, absolutely. Um, yeah. We had...
• 7:06
Well, so basically, I had a friend, her name is Simona. She was visiting, um, Portland.
• 7:11
She lives in Sweden, and she had reached out to me and said when she arrived, she wanted to, um, make sure that she, she visited the Oregon Dunes.
• 7:21
She had seen some photos of, um, of some friends fat biking on the dunes, and she wanted to make it happen.
• 7:28
So, um, so with Simona and I kind of on board, we rounded up a few other ladies that I thought might be interested in going on that same adventure. Um, you know, fat biking really hasn't taken off in Portland proper yet.
• 7:41
Um, we don't have a lot of access, quote close in access to, to single track. We don't get a lot of snow in town. Um, so, so there aren't a lot of fat bikes being ridden currently.
• 7:52
Um, so when I was starting to plan this trip, I thought of other ad- adventure-minded ladies that I thought would, would be a great addition to this trip, and I, I managed to get, like, a dozen gals, um, who agreed to come down to the Oregon Dunes and, and try out fat biking for the first time in this, um, pretty unique environment.
• 8:11
Um, so it is, it's all, um, it's all very accessible. We, we camped just a mile away from the, the dune access point. Mm-hmm. Um, so we were able to camp there, um, in yurts, which was lovely- Oh, nice...
• 8:24
because they have, um, they're, they're nice and warm. We went in the month of November, um, so we were slightly concerned about, um, bad weather, but it turns out we got fantastic weather.
• 8:35
It had poured the few days prior to our arrival, so the sand was set really, really solidly, um, which made for a couple of awesome days shredding around on fat bikes. And, um, I, I wrote about it.
• 8:47
I have a ton of pictures. That's up on our, um, our website, which is, uh, komorebicyclingteam.com. Very good. Um, but it was, it was a ton of fun. So where exactly are the dunes located in relationship to Portland?
• 9:01
If a, if a person was gonna come out that way, where, where do you have to go to get to this dune area? Oh, sure.
• 9:07
Um, so we're speaking very specifically about the Oregon Dune National Recreation Area, and that's, that's pretty far south from Portland. Um, it was about a three-hour drive. Um, you head southbound on I-5.
• 9:20
Three hour, two hour... Yeah. [laughs] Um, and the, the weekend that we went, like I said, it was raining.
• 9:26
We actually departed Portland, um, in a, in pretty tremendous, uh, thunderstorm, and I was, like, absolutely white-knuckling it the entire way down, like, hydroplaning my entire way down I-5.
• 9:37
Um, and then you, you turn off and you kind of cruise through the coast range, um, and then, um, the actual... The dunes are very close, um, to a little town.
• 9:48
I'm trying to remember what the name of it is, but it's not coming to me. It's, like... It's close to Florence. Gotcha. Um, but it's a, it's a really cool- But is it, is it inland from the ocean itself?
• 9:58
On- only by, uh, a mile or so. Okay. Mm-hmm. Um, it's a, it's a huge stretch of land. The, the, the area that we spent most of the time riding in, um, is non-motorized access only.
• 10:10
Um, but not too far up the beach from where we are, um, there's an ATV, um, exclusive area. Mm-hmm. So it's nice that they kind of separate the two.
• 10:19
Um, but, but once you get on into the dune area, you actually have to go through a little bit of, like, forested single track to access it, which was really fun.
• 10:26
Um, and then you have a few miles, um, uh, to, of, of the co- of the, of the dunes before you hit another little forested pocket, and then if you ride through that, you'll pop up and you're actually r- right, right on the, the edge of the ocean there.
• 10:40
Oh, wow. Beautiful. It's, it's totally beautiful. Yeah, it's gorgeous. So do you have a story behind the name Komorebi? Komorebi, yeah. Ready.
• 10:52
It's a Japanese word, um, it means- She's just gonna change the pronunciation every time. [laughs] That was even closer than the first time- That was, those, those... That would be the awesome thing to do...
• 11:02
that I said it. Uh, pretty close. Um, yeah, it's a Japanese word, and it means sunlight drifting through the leaves of trees. Oh.
• 11:09
Um, and I think it's a word that I heard a couple years ago, and I kinda kept it in my back pocket. It was one...
• 11:14
I, I just think it, I think it's gorgeous, and it's something that we enjoy, um, a bunch of here in the Pacific Northwest with our...
• 11:21
well, for at least half the year, uh, with our d- giant trees and, um, and sun- uh, you know, the summer times are just nothing but sunlight. Um, and I'm a mountain biker. Um, that's what I really enjoy doing.
• 11:33
You know what? So I get a lot of Komorebi when I'm out mountain biking. What's that? I'm a, I'm a mountain biker, too. I think Sven's a mountain biker. We all mountain bike. Yeah. We all mountain bike.
• 11:41
We, we just do it on fat bikes now. [laughs] I haven't done it since... Yeah. Fat bikes are mountain bikes. And I've never done, like, true mountain biking... Uh, well, I guess that's not true.
• 11:48
We went out to Bend- Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah... um, a couple of months ago to do some single track shredding on fat bikes, and it was, it was a lot of fun.
• 11:54
And it, it, it just seems so much less complicated than my mountain bike that has, like, suspension front and back and the dials and, and switches everywhere.
• 12:03
Um, and sometimes I forget to turn them the way that they should be, when the fat bike is, you know, maybe you adjust your tire pressure slightly and then you're- You're shredding and you have a huge grin on your face, which is awesome.
• 12:15
  This is true. Yes.
• 12:16
So Jocelyn and, and I have been trading emails to set up our little visit here today, and I kidded her that the only way that she could get on the show is [laughs] is that she and the rest of the team were gonna have to record us a campfire song.
• 12:30
But I didn't, actually I didn't record this with the Komrabi team, I recorded this with the PDW team. Oh. Oh, okay. Yeah. No wonder it sounded so bad. [laughs] [laughs] Just kidding. So, uh- Great. [laughs]...
• 12:43
with, without further ado, we're going to, uh, play the PDW- Oh... Peace Train campfire song. Yeah, and apologies to your listener. [laughs] That's list- that's listener- Before I even get into it... singular.
• 12:58
There's, we have- Yeah. We had three before we played the song and then we lost two. Now we have the one left. Goodbye everyone. Goodbye. [laughs] [laughs] Now I've been smiling lately.
• 13:11
Thinking about the good times to come. And I believe it could be something good has begun. A peace train sounding louder. Glide on the peace train.
• 13:25
Eee aoo eee ah. Come on the peace train. Yes, peace train, holy roller. Everyone jump on the peace train. Eee aoo eee ah. Come on the peace train. Wow.
• 13:44
Yeah. [laughs] Jolly. We, we, we had been drinking whiskey if that makes it any better. Oh. We were. I'm not sure if that makes it- Amen... we needed liquid courage, so. What kind of whiskey were you drinking?
• 13:56
Um, we were drinking Booker's actually. Oh. [laughs] Oh. [laughs] Ah, JK, do you have any Booker's in the flask? Yes I do. JK's got a little flask full of Booker's right here. There you go. Yeah.
• 14:05
That's how we rewarded him- It's the-... the other, the other week for being such a- Oh, very nice... fantastic, uh- It's a good one... color announcer. It- It really puts- Yeah... a, a grin on your face. There we go.
• 14:16
It does, quickly. [laughs] That's JK's, uh, that's- And, and, and apparently really negatively affects your singing voice. [laughs] JK's portion of the interview was to swallow the Booker's. Yes.
• 14:28
So that was a, that was a stunning rendition of Peace Train by Cat Stevens. Thanks. So- Yeah... speaking of, uh, Fat Stevens- Lucky Bird. Yeah, I mean Cat Stevens. Oh, yeah. You should probably tell us about that...
• 14:42
Oh, see I did, I did not make the whiskey face on that at all. Whiskey face. I think I, I think I might've just- Turned a corner? [laughs] Turned a corner. [laughs] JK. Atta boy. [laughs] My, my drinking career begins.
• 14:55
How m- how many times have you fallen on this flask exactly? [laughs] Uh, twice. Saved my life twice. It's sorta dented. And there is a bullet hole in it I think. No. It's a dent. Bullet dent. Bullet dent.
• 15:07
Not a bullet hole. 'Cause of the, the mean streets of Milwaukee. Well, the mean handlebars. [laughs] So what... Let me, let me try and- Whoo...
• 15:14
try and get Jocelyn to tell us a little bit about this pump that looks so much like a beer tapper. Yeah, that was the first thing- Yeah... I thought of when I saw it too, is just the tremendous volume. Yeah. It's big.
• 15:27
It's, it's big. Um, yeah, so well a little bit of backstory.
• 15:31
Um, Portland Design Works is in the process of crowdfunding for a fat bike-specific portable pump, uh, which is, which we've named, uh, Fat Stevens after our, after, um, Cat Stevens, which now pulls together full circle, right?
• 15:48
Peace Train- Full circle, Peace Train... Cat Stevens, Fat Stevens. Here we go. Right? Yeah. Um, yeah, it's- So your next pump will be called Yusuf... What? [laughs] [laughs] Sorry, sorry. Maybe.
• 15:59
Well, in a few years- Continue... in a few years it'll change its name to Yusuf Black Schumer Pump. Islam. Exactly. [laughs] Muslim. Muslim.
• 16:08
Um, yeah, it's, so we're, uh, we're in the kind of last week of our Kickstarter campaign. Um, and your listeners should go check it out, you guys should go and check it out.
• 16:18
We, we had one, um, prototype model produced, um, that I was able to go out and do some testing on. So we, we took the pump and we, we borrowed some fat bikes and, um, went to three different riding locations.
• 16:32
So we had the ability to test it out, um, on dirt, um, um, some sand dunes. Not on the coast, we actually went to this place called Christmas Valley, which is in central Oregon.
• 16:42
And in the snow, um, on Mount Bachelor near Bend, Oregon. Mm-hmm. And, um, and yeah, it's a, it's a high volume, uh, pump.
• 16:51
So basically we're, we're trying to cut the time c- in half that it takes to fill up a fat bike tire. Um- Hallelujah. Yeah. Yeah.
• 17:02
And, uh, so we were inspired when we saw you guys doing the fat bike, or the, I'm sorry, the, the pump shootout. Mm-hmm.
• 17:08
Uh, we kind of did our own version of that 'cause, 'cause the, the Mountain Morph had been our go-to pump as well- Mm-hmm... um, for, for inflating fat bike tires.
• 17:16
Um, our product designer, um, or engineer, he lives in Spokane and he actually is a, he has a fat bike as well, so he helped us develop this and, and the Mountain Morph was his go-to prior to developing this product.
• 17:29
And he was able to design a product that is, um, able to fill up a fat bike tire in a- approximately half the strokes. Um, so yeah, super high, high volume.
• 17:39
But the, the, you know, the pump still weighs, weighs under a pound. Um, and it easily can fit in either a backpack or in a frame bag.
• 17:46
So it's not so clunky that it's, that it's inconceivable that you can't use it when you're in remote places.
• 17:53
That's one of the reasons why we produced this portable pump, is fat bikes are enabling riders to go into more unique environments and really get out there and get away from, um, you know, it all.
• 18:04
Find, find the remote locations to ride in. Mm-hmm. Um, but when things go wrong out there, you need dependable equipment to get you back home.
• 18:14
And this Fat Stephens pump is gonna be able to, to help you out with that Right on. I'm looking at the, uh, Kickstarter page right now, and you guys are well on- Yeah... your way.
• 18:22
You've got seven days to go, and you're- We have seven days to go... y- yep, and you've got a $30,000 goal.
• 18:29
You've got over 13,000 towards that goal, and I know these Kickstarter things really kinda get going in the last few days. So everybody, this is gonna be a, a, a great thing for fat bikers.
• 18:39
If, if you haven't had the pain of, of having the wrong pump when [laughs] you're trying to fill your tire- Oh, yeah... uh, something like this, we saw sneaky prototypes of it ourselves. Yeah, we've seen- And, uh-...
• 18:51
a prototype of this, and the, the, the newest version of this looks even larger and more promising- Right on... than what we've seen, uh, than we, we saw it at Interbike. Oh, yeah, that's right.
• 19:01
We, we gave you, we gave you guys a sneak peek at Interbike, right? Yep, yep. Right. I remember that now. Yeah. At, uh, yeah, at, uh, Frostbike, I think, is where we saw the most recent one, right? Oh, right on. Yeah.
• 19:10
Was it Interbike? One of those. Yeah, so, you know- One of those fancy bike shows that the public can't go to, and we thumb our noses at them- [laughs]... like, "You can't come in here. We can see all the cool stuff."
• 19:19
Industry only, punks. [laughs] Right? That's up. You wanna- But, uh- Yeah... you wanna get into those shows, join the industry there, homies.
• 19:25
[laughs] Or, or maybe just look at fatbike.com 'cause we basically shoot a picture of everything that's interesting. Yeah. Pretty much. Oh, an official Fat Stephens- Pretty much... sticker. Yeah.
• 19:37
Well, plus you- Yeah, it comes with a- Well, plus you guys make some other cool stuff, like Dave's Mud Shovels and some of these, um- Yeah, exactly. Yeah...
• 19:43
some of these reward levels have other, other things from your, uh, your repertoire in them. Our lineup. So yeah. Yeah.
• 19:50
We just- Yeah, the Dave's Mud Shovels, that was the first fat bike-specific product that we developed.
• 19:55
It was actually the, the first industry, the, the first specific fat bike fenders, um, out there, and they, we can't keep them in stock. They just fly off the shelf.
• 20:04
Um, and we often, you know, we get feedback from our customers and, um, and our friends that ride fat bikes, and everyone has been asking for this fat bike-specific pump, which is the reason why we went about developing it.
• 20:16
And the, the Kickstarter, what we're trying to do, um, through this, you know, we're, we're still a small company and we're, there's six employees here.
• 20:24
Uh, we've been around for six years, and we decided to go the, the Kickstarter route in order to really try to take a, a gauge of the, the market viability of this kind, type of a product, um, and then just allow our customers, the end users, um, to purchase the product prior to, uh, to, you know, before pre-production, basically pre-production prices.
• 20:47
Sure. So they're getting a good deal.
• 20:48
They're investing in a great, you know, in a company, um, that is listening to them, hearing that there's something that they need, and producing something to hopefully solve that problem.
• 20:58
  Um, so, so it's a really, you know, it's a win-win here.
• 21:02
And, uh, we, we have some, you know, it's a little bit of a, of a hill to climb at this point, um, but we're confident and we think we have a really great product here, so. Well, cool. Yeah, it's good. Looks good to us.
• 21:11
Yeah. I, I really- Yeah... look forward, I, I really hope that, uh, that you hit this and you get this into the pipeline because I look forward to trying one. Yeah. 'Cause, you know- Thank you...
• 21:23
[laughs] I've tested every other pump. Pump. Yeah. We have another challenger- Except for that new Blackburn. We have another challenger in, in the, uh, in the test kitchen right now, so you can- Uh-huh...
• 21:34
look forward to more pump shootout, shootout, shootout, shoot out. Oh, man. That was our fakey, uh, echo- [laughs]... thing going on there.
• 21:43
I like it So, uh- So if, if anybody's gonna come out to, um, to the Portland area to ride fat bikes, are there shops out there- Yeah...
• 21:50
that are kind of like, is there one that's more fat bike friendly than, than another? If you were gonna say, you know, "Hop on a plane and go to Portland, this is the, this is the shop you should go to"?
• 22:01
God, that's a real good question, um, like I said, 'cause we're not a huge, uh, fat bike market yet. There's a shop that rents fat bikes. It's called, um, simply Ride Your Bike. Oh, cool. And they rent fat bikes.
• 22:15
Uh, but the Oregon coast, uh, has shops dotted all, all along it, north, north to south, um, and, and they're definitely tuned into the fat bike market, um, because our coastline is, um, really long, it's super gorgeous, and, um, and fat bikes are awesome to cruise around.
• 22:33
  Oh, yeah.
• 22:33
And then we also have some, uh, some shops in Bend that will rent fat bikes and, and, and carry some fat bikes in, in stock and, and fat bike-related products, um, so you can go and ride trails, um, hopefully get some snow up near Bachelor.
• 22:47
That's where we were when we were able to, to, to ride the snow, and it was awesome. Cool. Um, it was...
• 22:52
We, we were actually up there in the middle of a, of a snowstorm, one of the few of the season, and, um, it, it was challenging because the snow was so soft, but they do, um, they are, um, grooming some trails up there for fat bike riders.
• 23:06
So I have a feeling it's gonna grow in popularity here. It's just a matter of time. Yeah. Are- Like it is all around the country... are you guys experiencing the same, uh, kind of droughty conditions that California is?
• 23:16
Not to the same degree. We definitely got less rain this year than any year since I've lived in Portland, which is, um- Or, yeah, or snow up at Bachelor even... coming up on seven years now. Yep.
• 23:24
Yeah, very little snow this year. Very little snow. Um, and they're already talking about the, uh, fire dangers for the summertime. Um, but, you know. You know what I think you should do with this 30 grand?
• 23:36
Is just- [laughs]... get that money and go to Sasha from Vanilla and have him make you- Yeah... the most BA fat bike ever. [laughs] Well, I, so I gotta give out two, two shout-outs. Sure.
• 23:51
Uh, the first is to Curtis, Curtis Ingles- Oh, yeah... of, uh, Retro Tech- Oh, yeah...
• 23:54
because he, we had one of his fat bikes hanging in our Interbike booth last year, and man, that bike was a looker and, uh, I think it drew the, you know, primary, it was one of the primary draws of, of folks entering, you know, to come in, check out our stuff.
• 24:08
Uh, we also had a Breadwinner hanging in our booth, and that was not a fat bike, but I gotta show them some love because they, um, they built us-... uh, custom bikes for the, the Komaromi Cycling Team.
• 24:19
Um, those are our actual team bikes we ride on. Right. Fully rigid 29ers, um, for our adventures, so. So you've b- you've been doing the fat bike thing and the Fat Stevens fat bike pump. Have you, uh- Yeah...
• 24:30
done anything with plus sized bikes yet, like 29 plus, 27 and a half plus, any of those kind of larger volume, like three inch plus tires? But not a full on snow fat bike tire. Sure, yeah.
• 24:43
Um, yeah, I've cruised around on a few. So my, uh, my boyfriend actually has a, a Pugly Special Ops. Um, and he built up a, a separate wheel set, um, using the Rabbit Hole rim.
• 24:54
And, uh, so we, he used that on the Oregon Outback, uh, route that we rode last month and, uh, he really, really enjoyed it. Um, and he wouldn't let me borrow it at all.
• 25:04
[laughs] There was no trading of bikes during that route. Time for a new boyfriend. [laughs] Well- Yeah... relationship advice and fat bike banter. You bet. We do it all.
• 25:17
And embezzling, 'cause I suggested that you take the 30,000 [laughs] and make yourself a cool bike. Yeah.
• 25:23
I was riding on 2.2s and he was on those threes and, uh, um, he definitely had a more comfortable ride on some of the sections, so.
• 25:31
Which, which is another awesome route and I would highly recommend it, although fat bikes might be a little overkill for some of the sections. It was still such an amazing way to see the state, so.
• 25:40
Well, if I come out there after Interbike- Yeah... you and I are gonna go beach riding and, uh- Beach... and beer drinking and- Sure. Yeah...
• 25:47
speaking of beer drinking, we're onto our second bottle of Jocelyn's supplied beer. We are now on the... Wait. Like, like little kids on Sunday morning, we opened [laughs] Mom and Dad's beer- Yeah...
• 25:59
almost silently while you were- Yeah, that was the-... while you were talking... Hopworks, uh, uh... Which one was that? Rise Up. The Rise Up Red. Oh, the Rise Up Red. Yeah, that one's good too. Yeah. What about...
• 26:08
You, good choices. A real nice one. Yeah. Com- Good choices. I said- I mean, it's hard, I mean, it's like shooting fish in a barrel here. You can't, you can't go wrong.
• 26:15
There's much- So you can go wrong here in the Midwest. Sven wanted to send you Grain Belt. [laughs] Grain Belt's good. Grain Belt's good. Grain Belt's good, but it, it's like Rainier out there.
• 26:25
That would be more Olympia. [laughs] So- Oh, we have so many, we have so many good breweries here. I'm, I'm totally digging the Carbon Forest stuff lately.
• 26:34
I've just been jonesing on, on Fantasy Factory and a couple of their other, uh, session IPA and couple... Man, they're good. Out of Madison. Yeah. Now I need to come out there too and visit.
• 26:45
I n- I, I gotta persuade the boss man to let me go out for Frost Bike next year. Sure. Yeah. Or maybe not. Maybe I should come out when it's more reasonable weather.
• 26:52
I actually was in Minnesota last, uh, I went to Minneapolis last July, my first time there, and I had a, a, such a great time, a hell of a time. That's a real fun biking city. Fat Bike Birkie too.
• 27:01
Um, didn't have, didn't get to do any mountain biking, but I did get to cruise around on a fat bike, um, just on the- On the greenway... on the, the cool trail system that they have through town. Yeah. Yep.
• 27:10
Fat Bike Birkie- Yeah... would be a good time to come to. Fly into Minneapolis and then get a ride up to the Northwoods there. And, uh, there's, there's, there's gonna be [laughs] 1,000 fat bikers in one race- Yeah...
• 27:22
next year. It's a good, good thing to, uh, to get some exposure at and to have some fun at and- There's-... there's a lot of great trails there that aren't just the Birkie trail that they're grooming now. It's fantastic.
• 27:32
Yeah. And then you can come to our- It is a good idea... after party- Yeah... and rub elbows with, uh, Ned Overend and Travis- Ooh... Travis Brown. Some famous folks. Sven Holmer. I'll put it on the to-do list.
• 27:46
Um, Revelate Designs is one of our, our sponsors for the Komaromi Cycling Team as well and, and there's kind of an open invitation for me to go up to Alaska and ride fat bikes. You should do that.
• 27:54
Uh, which is, which is way high on the to-do list. Well, yeah. You haven't ridden a fat bike till you've ridden a fat bike by a moose. [laughs] Yeah. I can't say that I've...
• 28:06
I've hiked by a moose, but that was in New Hampshire. All right. East Coast moose itche- [laughs] Wild animals. Those things are big. Yeah. It's, it's, it- And surprisingly fast. [laughs] Are they? [laughs] Oh, yeah.
• 28:18
Oh, yeah. Yeah. You don't get between a mama and her baby. Oh, no. No. Of any species. Right. True. I, I totally turned into, like, a 10-year-old when I saw the first one. I really want to pet it. [laughs] It's so cute.
• 28:32
[laughs] But I didn't. The Alaskans that I were with- Said, "Don't do that, boy"... held me back. Said, "Gomes- We should just- Be cool, man. Be cool... plug that thing and eat it... be cool.
• 28:44
Let the moose come to you, Gomes." [laughs] All right, Jocelyn. So Jocelyn, you have been the best guest ever. Ever. Wow. Yeah. That's a, that's a lofty claim.
• 28:56
Well, I, I think it, it, you know, part of it is the, you know, the singing of the song, I think. [laughs] Thank you very much for that. There's, there's a big part of it is- I-... that you bought us beer.
• 29:05
[laughs] Oh, yeah, that, yeah. No, that too. You're sweet talkers enough. You know, we're, we're, we're fairly easy. I, I owe all your listeners that had to, had to endear that a beer. Uh- Oh... but not, not really.
• 29:17
Well, s- send one more bottle and I think you're covered. [laughs] That's, that's three more people. So, uh, you got 'em covered. Thanks for coming on the show and singing us a song. You are the best. Yeah.
• 29:29
Let's stay in touch. I really appreciate... Yeah. Talking with you guys was super fun. Um, hope to see you at, in, uh, in Vegas again this year. Vegas.
• 29:36
And, and please do try to make plans to, uh, to visit us here in the, in the Beaver State. We have a, we have a real good time on bikes, and it would be awesome to show you around on some fat bikes for sure. Killer.
• 29:46
All right. Thanks again, Jocelyn. Yeah. Take care, guys. Have a good night. Thank you. Well? What do you think of this third beer there? I have horrors. Like, darkness. Well, I don't think I'm on that one yet.
• 30:02
I'm still on the red one. Like, no more black. Like you'd expect it to be syrup. It's got a bar on the label. Loaded for bar. Hey, quit playing with yourself. It's the weekly dose of fat.
• 30:19
Welcome back to the show, ladies and gentlemen We're on our third bottle of beer now from Jocelyn. Black Bear Double X Stout, a gold medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival. From the Alameda Brewhouse.
• 30:37
Alameda. [laughs] Alameda, where the nuclear- Nuclear missiles are [laughs]... missiles are in Alameda across the bay. That's what I said. I th- said that. It was in Alameda.
• 30:45
But there's- The real- But Alameda is in San Fran. This is from Portland. Very good. So honey- Yeah, but every time I'm getting a honey flavor or a honey olfactory thing off of this. I haven't tasted it yet.
• 30:59
Oh, I just got it on my mini- I just-... my mini mustache. [laughs] Yeah, we didn't, we don't do Beards and Beer now, but, but Sven- There's still, there are still facial hairs in here...
• 31:08
Sven is, uh, rocking the full-on Amish or Mormon kinda thing going. He's, he's got- I c- I don't have the chin strap yet. Yeah, that's true. That bag. The chin strap.
• 31:19
I, I actually, like, carved my beard into, like, a semi-corporate, uh, configuration because I went to Trek World Hard- Headquarters. [laughs] Hard, Hard, Hard Getters. Head Quarters. Heads Quizzers. Yeah.
• 31:31
Gizzies gizzies. So, uh, you have a report on Mr. Jordan Wakeley. Jordan Wakeley is just on a tear.
• 31:40
He, uh, won another elite class mountain bike race on his, uh, Quiring 29 plus rainbow trout forked, uh, plus bike at Hanson Hills, Michigan last weekend, and it was his 10-year anniversary of stepping to the line.
• 31:56
Oh, he started when he was, like, seven. [laughs] He's not that old. [laughs] Well, I'm sure he started as, as a junior. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's- Um-... young now...
• 32:04
'cause he was also a really, and probably still is, a world-class junior and senior and elite canoe racer. Canoer.
• 32:12
Can you see that cat just sitting in one of those little racing canoes just- Can you see some 130-pound little skinny guy, and then there's that big Jordan next to him? Right.
• 32:21
And he's like, "Oh, man, that guy's here again?" Just busting the paddle in half- [laughs]... in the water.
• 32:28
Well- So he, he, this is, and this is, I guess, kind of the beauty of Facebook is that, you know, I, I learn all these things about my hero, Jordan. [laughs] So he's racing again up, uh, somewhere a couple weeks?
• 32:40
In a couple weeks he'll be lining up for the Lumberjack 100 while you're out there out west, uh, doing the tour of water parks. [laughs] Yeah, no. Yeah, head out, well, yeah, well, glacier water. Right.
• 32:53
Glacial, glacial water at Glacier National Park. Going to Glacier National Park, right?
• 32:57
Well, yeah, I'm kinda trying to still map out a route and try to keep the family happy, and, uh- You should just go on family vacation. Your kids are just the right age. Anyway- Yeah...
• 33:07
have you seen- They're on, well, they're, they're on their way... more, more relationship advice- Yeah... unsolicited this week. They're on their way. [laughs] I mean, they're coming with me, so I- Yeah...
• 33:15
  I can't help that.
• 33:17
[laughs] But he'll be lining up at the Lumberjack 100 in two weeks, and, uh, while you're gone, I think I'm gonna take a little trip over to Michigan if all the stars align, and, uh, I will get a face-to-face interview with Mr.
• 33:29
Jordan Wakeley. Are you gonna take the ferry over, or are you gonna drive? I'll drive around. With, with camper? With camper. Have camper will travel. Camper, uh, pack raft, plus bike, fat bike.
• 33:41
We should set a date for a ferry trip, though, and try and get- Yeah...
• 33:44
a few people on that, so maybe towards the, the middle of July or the end of July when the, when the winds off the lake are really nice and you're right on the shoreline over there. And our- Mm...
• 33:54
our friend Nate Phelps from Central District on the 20th is running a 24-hour overnight that I fully intend on- That we should just take the ferry over for. Well, that's on the 20th of June. Oh.
• 34:04
And that's what I'm talking about going over there. Other, and rolling that all into going to see Scott Quiring- July... and visit, visit Ken Blakey Shell and check out the- Ken Blakey Shell, hey, by the way. Yeah? Yeah.
• 34:16
Fat Camp Podcast number two is coming up on Saturday. Right. That'd be, like, tomorrow. Hubs. In the future. Indeed. Yeah, they're doing hub standards. [laughs] Hub standards.
• 34:26
What, you know, he does like to dig into just the hornet's nest of just ridiculous bike industry stuff, doesn't he? Because- Yeah, he's the guy that looks- Try to make sense of it...
• 34:36
looks at the, at the matrix and can actually just, the, that, those green numbers. Mm-hmm. I see- That-... redhead. I see brunette. Yeah. I see blonde.
• 34:46
[laughs] Speaking of, speaking of just weird hub standards, you know- Yeah... now we've got the new boost thing.
• 34:50
We're, we're, uh, we're doing this plus bike thing, too, and we've got, uh, some I9 hubs coming that are 177 and 110. Nice. Weird, huh? Yeah. That equals, like, 287 or something.
• 35:05
[laughs] See, and, like, me, I don't care really. Like, okay, you made the hubs fit whatever you're trying to fit them on, but what color are they? [laughs] Would be my question. [laughs] I think they're gonna be...
• 35:13
Well, my, I'm, I'm looking for green to match the, uh, the OneUp USA, uh- Yeah... wide drivetrain thing going on. Oh. We've got the 44-tooth. Greens are hard to match, man. 44-tooth. Yeah, that's, that's what I need.
• 35:25
On the, on the XX1 cassette. That's what I- It's already installed. It looks badass. It's green. That's what I needed out at the Trek Trails yesterday. [laughs] Well, they have it. Was the 44-tooth. Yeah, they have it.
• 35:36
When Jim did it, I'm like, "How the hell does that thing come off there?" He's like, "I think you just do this."
• 35:40
Clickety, clickety, clickety, clickety, and popped it off and put the new one on there, and I'm like, "That's pretty sweet." [laughs] Cool.
• 35:45
'Cause I think it's the only replaceable gear on that XX1 cassette is that outer big ass ring, the aluminum one. Hmm. The rest of them are all stainless steel. I'm getting coffee off this beer now, too. Are you?
• 35:56
Oh, yeah. I'm getting all sorts of flavors off it. Coffee, coffee, chocolate. That, it's very soothing. I kinda had an upset tummy, and this is kinda feeling [laughs] kinda pretty good.
• 36:07
The Pepto, the Pepto-Bismol of beers. It's like a nice hug in my belly. So we've got a whole bunch of stuff going on in Milwaukee. We had a, we had a big weekend of riding last weekend. Oh, yes.
• 36:17
We've got, uh, one of the, one of the biggest events that's been happening in Milwaukee forever just about is the Fat Tire Tour that's coming up on Saturday. Yeah, and that takes, that takes care of a lot of the urban-
• 36:31
... landscape and underbelly of Milwaukee- Right... with that. All the amateurs come out as opposed to you old pros. Yeah. No, well- That's the fashionable... yeah. I mean, it's, it's, it's just a good, it's a good roll.
• 36:45
It is, yep. It's just a good, fun, good people, good roll. And if you wanna- Good amount of distance...
• 36:49
if you wanna kind of still get in on the, uh, the little bit less known, the Tour d'Farce is actually on Friday too, which is a Bay View thing. Mm-hmm.
• 36:57
And, uh- Yeah, that, that, that kinda normally- That one's a little bit more nebulous. Yeah. Is that the Crit- And it hangs a lot- Critérium du DuFene? [laughs] No. Hon, hon, hon. Mm-hmm.
• 37:07
What does that even mean, DuFene? DuFene. It means if you win that, then you win the Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee. Daphne's- [laughs] Yay, Daphne. I won Daphne's Crit. That just sounds so- I, you know-... dirty...
• 37:20
Velma's the one with the glasses, right? Yep. Okay. Daphne. Daphne, my ass. [laughs] That's all I have to say about that. But yeah, Tour d'Farce just takes care of, uh, like in the, uh, southern zone.
• 37:35
Southern zone, yeah. The southern part of Milwaukee. Right. Sometimes I don't- That's usually where I start-... really fit... my Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee. I usually start at the Central area. Sure.
• 37:45
Yeah, so- And then end at Central. Now it's kind of headquartering at Best Place, which is new for us, because it used to headquarter at Hollander, right? I believe so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, whatever.
• 37:58
This stuff means nothing to people who aren't from here, but- It is Animal House. I tell you what- House, house... if, if you happen- Animal House.
• 38:05
[laughs] If you happen to be here on a Sunday, you can join us for our Church of Two Wheels Sunday service, which meets every Sunday at 11:30 at, uh, the old Swinging Door- Yes...
• 38:14
for a steak and eggs breakfast, and then, uh, and then a lot of riding on Sunday. There you go. Mm-hmm. Well,
• 38:22
yesterday I went to Trek Bicycle's world headquarters and [laughs] rode one of their, rode their private test trails there. Yeah. That- We've, we've been invited out there for quite a while.
• 38:34
I'm glad you finally could get out there. Yeah.
• 38:37
I went out there and, uh, met up with several of the product managers from the Bontrager team, and, uh, got a ride on their new Stache 9 29+ bike with the Manitou fork, and I really like that ride thing.
• 38:54
The fork or the bike or- Both... all, all, everything works together pretty well? Everything works together very well. And I got to actually meet with the wheel guy
• 39:05
and the tire guy, and they talked to us about how they designed the tire first, and- Chupacabra? Chupacabra. Chupacabra. And optimized, they have a 39 millimeter inner diameter width of their rim- Okay.
• 39:23
Good, good... that gives them the ultimate profile for that tire. And then that rim and w- uh, tire combination they built the Stache around. And that Stache is
• 39:34
very nimble and flickable in comparison to the plus bike that, that I ride, that I own and ride. Mm-hmm. Um, it, it, it rode very well.
• 39:44
And they have some, you know, they c- they can just do things that no public land will let anybody do. [laughs] They have big drops. They have- Not sustainable... tons of wooden, uh, special apparatus there.
• 40:01
They have, uh, they have just j- it's a playground of bikes. And Alex, who I was riding with is, uh, you know, he's g- he's got the skills to pay the bills. So I got some sweet shots of him doing some great stuff.
• 40:14
And he- And you got schooled like a mofo. And he got to watch an old fat guy sweat a lot. [laughs] Yeah. It's actually been kinda warm here in the old- Yeah... Midwest lately. It's pretty hot.
• 40:24
But, uh, you can look forward to stories on Plus Bike about the Stache, and we have lots of other things to share when the time is right from the Bontrager team. Excellent.
• 40:38
So we're gonna be back after this break from our sponsors. The Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by Portland Design Works.
• 40:48
Portland Design Works creates beautiful, simple gear for everyday cycling, including the first fat bike-specific fenders on the market, Dave's Mud Shovels.
• 40:59
All Portland Design Works products [laughs] look great, work well, and are covered by their lifetime warranty. Check out all of their gear at www.ridepdw.com.
• 41:14
Hey, and don't forget to check out their Kickstarter project for the next seven days and fund that Fat Stevens. We're really behind this thing, and hope that you all need a pump like that.
• 41:24
We all need to know how many pumps it takes to get to the middle of a Tootsie Pop. A one, a two [laughs] A three. JK tried to make me laugh before. Yeah. He, he- Yeah, you didn't. You chuckled a little.
• 41:38
[laughs] I can get you a toe. But you pedaled through. Way to go. And I did. And did like a professional what? What would... A professional beer drinker. Woo. Beer stop, boys. Woo. Beer stop. Beer stop.
• 41:53
[bottles clinking] Woo. Third beer. Beer stop. This is- Yeah, we all thought that we wouldn't get to the stout, but I think- I think, think this is- I think-... my favorite of the bunch...
• 42:02
and then the, the Base Camp I think is my second favorite. Mm-hmm. And then the Red. They're all good. Yeah, they're all good though. But I am- Quality... I'm grooving on this stout beer. So we have links. Yeah.
• 42:14
From- Yeah, we got some links this week... from everywhere. Around the globe. Once again, the matrix being explained. That's basically- Right...
• 42:22
what I call anything to do with gears and numbers and all that technical stuff. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That's the matrix. Yeah. Well, it makes sense when you look at it visually like that. Yeah, yeah.
• 42:33
It's, it's the whole chart system there. Yeah. So take a look at that and you feel better about your one-by. And your, and it's all your one-by, two-by, three-by Blah, blah, blah Yeah.
• 42:43
And it tells you there's a lot of overlap when you have a three When they don't have a Rohloff in there Yeah, they don't Which is- Which would be just in- perfectly syncopated That's a one, that's a one by one, but different Yeah [laughs] With 18, it has the triple b- broken down into 18 exact, well, exact- 14 14?
• 43:02
  14. Equal chunky chunks I can't even get, I can't even get the number right. Well, you haven't had a Rohloff for how long now? A long time. Yeah. I'm still stoked on it. It's still my beach bike still.
• 43:12
That's, I love it on there, and, uh, my city bike also has one. And I think I'm gonna put one on one of our prototype Apes just to mess around [laughs] with, 'cause I'm a silly boy. You go, you go, Sven. I will. And then
• 43:26
a full-grown adult male named Rusty sent me some links, and [laughs] I looked at the link The bailiff Rusty- [laughs]... from People's Court? And [laughs] Or from Vacation Rusty...
• 43:38
sure enough, there's, there's one of our pictures that he s- [laughs]... he swiped from us right in his blog. It's with, it's Neil Flot- Way to go, Neil... going like this Like, what?
• 43:46
[laughs] Oh, sorry Talking about Rohloffs You can't see that. It's more like- Yeah... huh? Like that. So we can, huh? Yeah, you can see that one better. [laughs] So way to, way to go, Rusty. That was at Interbike. Yeah.
• 43:58
So it's either your or my photo that he stole. Yeah We get to, we get to decide. You also beer Rusty, that's- Yeah, right... that's basically it And, and, and folks, we don't mind you using our photos.
• 44:06
It would be great if you'd just link back to the site though. Exactly. Be fantastic. That, that, that would be good, 'cause we're click farmers. Yeah. Sort of. Sort of. I like farming.
• 44:16
I got a nice batch of- [laughs] I like turtles. [laughs] I like farming. Turtles. [laughs] I have a nice batch of beans growing in, in the garden. It sounds like code- That's right... for something else So, so
• 44:29
I mean, not only are you going to Iceland soon- No, I'm not going to Iceland. What? Just Dirty's going to Iceland only? Dirty's, Dirty gets to go. And now he wants petty cash from us too. [laughs] Well, that's okay.
• 44:45
Yeah. People could, people in hell want ice water is my [laughs] used to say. Just kidding, Dirty. We're gonna set you up. Yeah, boy. We're gonna, we're gonna get you, like, a Bank AmeriCard or something.
• 44:56
Well, the, the cool thing is that he's been there before, and he really knows Iceland, and, uh, that's a good thing. Yeah, we love Dirty, man. He's a cool cat. So you couldn't get- Kind of...
• 45:08
so you couldn't get your passport in order in time? No, I just felt that he was a better fit. Yeah. That it was a more res- responsible company thing to send someone.
• 45:18
While you're away, you know, I have to be watching, watching the home front. From Michigan. Be on top of shit. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah, but it's easier from Michigan than from Iceland, right?
• 45:28
Well, I mean, not only we got this across Iceland on a fat bike. Yeah. And we got the Scandinavian Jesus in Iceland. And you know- Which is part of the Dirty crew... indeed. Indeed. And dude. [laughs] And dude.
• 45:41
[laughs] And dude. Yikes. And then we have, uh, Coast Kid talking about 4.8 Schwalbes. Schwalbes, yeah. Or the way we say it was a Schwalbe. Fat Schwalbe. The Jumbo Jim. Beep. There you are. Hello? Hello. There we go.
• 45:59
I had to turn you up on the mixing board. It's Old Bear. Oh. Live from Rolla. Oh, Old Bear's back. Old Bear, how's it going, dude? Pretty good. Too hot to ride down here for me. Yeah, too hot to ride.
• 46:11
I, I got, have a- 101 down here today. Oh, man. Oh, that is hot. Hey, I have a box ready for you. I just gotta throw it in the old, uh, UPS here pretty quick. It's coming down your way. Okay. Yeah. All right.
• 46:24
We're not the swiftest, but we're the best. And I tell you what- [laughs] [laughs] You are in the lead in our contest right now to win that framed bike, 'cause- Really? Yeah, 'cause you are both the first and the second
• 46:42
guy to, uh, guy to enter. I think we got another entry today actually, so- Yeah... but he's still the first and second entry. Oh, good. Yeah.
• 46:50
If you ever, if you ever need a, uh, old retired radio DJ to do some announcing for you, I'm open to it. All right. Yeah. Well- We could do the Old Bear Hour on old Fat Bike Radio... indeed. That'd be fun. That'd be fun.
• 47:06
So do you, uh- Yeah, we just, uh- Do you r-... ride... you ride, do you ride your fat bike in the summertime as well as, 'cause you don't hardly even get any snow anyway down there in Rolla I ride mine year round.
• 47:17
All right. That's, that's what we were hoping- Yeah... people would tell us I ride the monster year round. I mean, it's my only means of transportation here. I'm telling you. Don't own a car.
• 47:27
My town is small enough where I can ride. If I have to go get some groceries, I can ride up to the store and put them in a backpack and come home.
• 47:36
All these industry, all these industry people only think that, that fat bikes are for winter. Well, Old Bear's got something to teach them. I know. So that's why, that's why we had you call in today-
• 47:50
Well, I think what-... and tell us that you rode your bike- Uh... in the summer as well as the winter. But no matter what, in the winter, it's- Yeah, I ride it year round.
• 47:56
I didn't ride it too much this winter 'cause it got a little bit nippy down here. I, this, I have congestive heart failure. Uh-huh.
• 48:03
And one of the, one of the stipulations is I can't ride below 20- bo- 22 to 25 degrees without the wind chill, and I can't ride above, outside above 95. Uh. Today it hit 101 here. Wow.
• 48:19
So it kind of- Sounds like good advice for everybody... seemed better if I had to red green a light on my bike. [laughs] Yeah. I think that's good advice.
• 48:26
I could use the handyman's secret weapon and put a light on my bike and ride at night. There you go. Yeah, there's, there's wild things going on there, uh, in the Berrymen at night.
• 48:38
You never know what you're gonna run- Yeah... into out there. [laughs] Well, we got cougars and bears moving up into the area, and I don't think I'd wanna run into one of them out there.
• 48:48
That's for sure Unless you're talking, like, hot- I mean-... hot 50-year-old ladies, and then, you know. [laughs] And then even, and even, and, and even then I'd have to say, well, sorry, I've already,
• 49:00
I've already ha- I already have a lifetime contract. [laughs] I just had my 63rd birthday. Oh, yeah, 'cause all bets are off on your birthday. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] So what, what's been going- I don't feel 63. Hmm?
• 49:18
I say what's, uh, what's been going on down there? What's, besides the heat, what's been happening? Well, we went out one day, my friend and I, and we checked on a trail out by a town called Newburg.
• 49:32
It's called the King Tuck Recreation Area. Mm-hmm. And the horse people have just destroyed the trails. Oh, man. They ride them when they're wet. Ooh, that's a bummer. You know what freaked me out about- Yeah...
• 49:43
going out to ride in the Ozarks and the Berrymen, like Brazil Creek Campground, I couldn't believe how many people ride mules as opposed to horses. Yeah.
• 49:56
Well, that's our, that's our state an- one of our state animals is the mule. Oh, okay. All right. Well, see. So they don't do- Yeah...
• 50:04
do they do, like in, uh, North Carolina, uh, like at Sally, they do, um, horses one day and bikes the other day, and then they switch the two different, uh, loops so that the horses aren't on the loop all the time.
• 50:18
The bikes get it one day, then the horses. Yeah. They don't, that seemed to kind of help not trash the trails quite as much. Yeah.
• 50:27
Maybe we need, maybe we need to mention that, uh, maybe we need to mention that with forest, uh, people here.
• 50:32
Well, you know, I mean, mountain bikers are pretty good about not riding trails when they're really m- muddy and crappy. But horse people- Yeah...
• 50:39
you know, the horse can do anything you want pretty much, so it's not like you really think about it. But that really does tend to, uh, damage a trail. Sure does.
• 50:48
Well, we got a real nice little trail system here in town, believe it or not. Um, it's called the Lions Club Mountain Bike Trails. Yeah, you had said. It's built by some mountain bikers and by our local bike shop.
• 51:01
And it's single track and it's real nice. There's not a lot of elevation gain, which is good for me. But, uh, it's flat and it's windy. It's really nice though. It's a 4.2, uh, mile
• 51:14
trail that winds through the woods and through some open, you know, open ground.
• 51:19
And I, I go out there at least four times a week when I'm able to, and I put in, um, my gosh, I must put in four or five laps at a time just off-road and- Nice. Very nice...
• 51:32
I still go by the old adage that one mile off-road is four, equal to four on. [laughs] So that's a lot of mileage. We like to call those Johnny Pomp miles.
• 51:42
So have you, uh, have you gone to Route 66 Bikes and told, uh, old Dano that, that you've talked to Gomez on the, on the radio yet? Yeah, I told him. Dano, he doesn't, he can't remember you. [laughs] I guess, hey, hey.
• 51:58
That's funny. Look, the, the guys in Georgia invited us to come down there, so maybe during the, uh, the winter we'll have to make a sweep through the South. Yeah. Yep. Yeah.
• 52:06
Yeah, their chamber of commerce says- Yeah, we-..."Come on down. We'll pay for your lodging and your food and your beer. We just want you to hang out in our town and ride your bikes here and tell people about it." Yeah.
• 52:17
We're not expecting that from you, Old Bear. [laughs] Well, well, that- I'm just, I, I'm just planting the seed, that's all. [laughs] We can camp in the, in the national forest. We're, we're hardy woodsmen. Hardy.
• 52:29
Well, at least I'm a hardy woodsman. Yeah. I would say that way. I'm hardly a woodsman. With my health, I can't do that anymore. [laughs] Sleeping on the ground would be a problem. Well, I have a trailer.
• 52:38
I still sleep on the ground, or in a hammock. Hammock. Yeah. Well, you can't be as old as me, so. Well, all right. We might be close. [laughs] Oh, he's mighty old. Well, yeah, I'm not, I'm not as old as you. Not quite.
• 52:52
For sure. Not quite. I technically- Not yet, not yet... am 63 now. But I, but I still feel 63. Yeah, give him a few years. He'll catch up. Yeah. [laughs] He will. He will, the way I'm going. I, I like...
• 53:00
See, I'm, I'm a Chicago boy originally. I grew up in the northwest suburbs. No way. Up there in Chicago. Dude, I grew up- And I was riding fat tire bikes, old stripped down Schwinn's in the '60s.
• 53:15
On the Des Plaines River Trail? No, this was in, we lived in Buffalo Grove. Oh, damn. And they had a lot of undeveloped area, and we developed some trails back there. Oh, cool.
• 53:27
And the, uh, 20-inch crowd had stripped off their banana seats and put BMX seats, or you know, 10-speed seats- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm... on their bikes and kept their eight hanger bars, and they dominated it.
• 53:41
And they, they would run us off when we'd try to go to the store. [laughs] We wound up getting all these, we wound up getting all these old clunkers. I started out, I was the first one, with an old Phantom
• 53:54
that the neighbors threw out, and I stripped off the tank, the fenders, the rack, kept that springer fork, and I rode it, and it had a two-speed kickback, uh- Oh, killer... rear hub. Yeah, clunkers are coming on strong.
• 54:09
You remember the Kenta- Yep, coming back. Reminiscing with that two-speed kickback. That was a, that was a fun thing. Absolutely. And, and I- Yeah, it was...
• 54:16
my kids went to Buffalo Grove High School, Old Bear, so it's, it's just amazing how- Really?... what a small world it is. Small world after all. Yeah. So I grew up, I grew up in the northwest suburbs.
• 54:26
I went to, I graduated in 1970. Oh, wow. Yeah? I graduated from Maine West- Oh, really? I graduated, uh-... seven years later, so I'm seven years younger than you, but I'm, but I'm- Yeah...
• 54:39
but my joints feel just as old as yours. [laughs] All right, Old Bear. Well, we can ride. Well, we, we've, we've gotta wrap this one up this week. Okay.
• 54:49
Yeah, we still, we still gotta get to our plus bikes, bu- plus bike links. Plus bike link. It's the new thing in biking right now, these plus bikes. You know what I think?
• 54:57
The, it's gonna be Will clunkers come up from the bottom or will plus bikes come down from the top? Ooh, good question. It's a race to the middle. Race to the middle. Hey, all right, old bear.
• 55:10
Give us a shout any time, man. All right, I will. Good to hear from you. Behave yourself, Sven and Gomez. [laughs] And remember, Vikings aren't all bad. [laughs] Take care, bro. All right, man.
• 55:23
So we got a couple of links on the old plus bike thing here, huh? I know. Cooker, those guys. That's a division of... Somehow it's like Cannondale's cousin. Somehow Cannondale's cousin, yeah. Yeah.
• 55:36
Their illegitimate cousin. Durrell and that whole, that whole family of companies. They got some plus bikes. They're on the roll. Yeah. They're on the, they're on the verge. Yeah. Uh, they did a nice fat bike. Yeah.
• 55:50
I saw actually one rolling around the other day. Sure. I, I, I don't know. I mean, I used to know every fat biker in the city. [laughs] No way anymore. Another offset frame.
• 55:58
Another- It'll be like name three offset frames. It'd be like- Northpaw... Pugsley- [laughs]... Moonlander- Northpaw... Northpaw, and Charge Cooker. There you go.
• 56:09
It's just a weird, weird the way the whole name is Charge. Charge Bikes, and the actual model is the Cooker. Yeah. But they got like Cookers that aren't fat bikes b- and Cookers that are fat bikes. So I'm confused.
• 56:22
[laughs] Way to confuse the Uncle Gomez. You know how you- Yeah. You know, you know what doesn't require any confusion? What? Stickers. Oh, yeah. We're giving away stickers. Not at- Of our new bike...
• 56:30
not at fatbike.com, though. Oh, well- Even-... there's, there's, there's fatbike.com's stickers in the, in the pipeline as well. We just-
• 56:41
But right now we're just talking about giving away the free plus bike stickers, and then we're gonna turn around and be like, "Oh yeah? You like those? Well, how about some of these?" Yeah. Yeah.
• 56:51
[laughs] How about these? Yeah. [laughs] What was that? Yeah. What's going on down there? [laughs] And Ricky Goes Bikepacking. Yeah. R- our buddy, Ricky Deleos from the, uh, Capital area there, Washington DC. All right.
• 57:06
He went bikepacking for the first time with bags. He had been bikepacking with panniers and whatnot before. So he's an old school guy, even though he looks like he's still a 20-year-old. [laughs] Yeah.
• 57:18
He's been around for- Yeah, he's a-... for a while. He's a handsome gentleman. And he has quite the stable of titanium bicycles. Well, I'm glad somebody does. Indeed.
• 57:30
Well, folks, thanks again to Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast. Check 'em out at surlybikes.com. I believe we're outta here. Bye bye. Everybody- See you after the hiatus, kids. Oh, yeah.
• 57:46
Don't hate us- We didn't really-... for the hiatus... for the hiatus. [laughs] We didn't, we didn't really say much about the hiatus, but we're gonna take a couple weeks off.
• 57:56
'Cause Sven doesn't think [laughs] that JK and I are smart enough to do a radio show by ourselves. No, he knows. [laughs] And he's, and he's probably right. Hey. Hey. Calculated.
• 58:07
I wouldn't say I'm smart enough, but I'm just, uh- Uh... I'm just gonna lay low. Yeah. Leave the audience- I just, I just kinda felt like-... waiting with bated line... we should have a little break.
• 58:16
It wasn't really that... It just worked out right. We may s- we may throw some archives up or something just for the heck of it. We'll see. Or not. Or not.
• 58:26
And then back in, we'll be back in July with the energy of 10,000 fire ants or something. Yep. Just get me a present for my birthday. Or a giant grasshopper. [laughs] All right. See y'all in a couple weeks. Bye bye.
