Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. My name is Darrell Duncan.
- 0:29I'm the director of track and field and cross country at the
- 0:32Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.
- 0:36I've been working there for about four years, and since I've
- 0:39been there, we've seen tremendous growth that I think
- 0:44no one was truly prepared for. For me, before taking the job,
- 0:50the thing that I wanted to be able to do was have a program
- 0:53that I could fully get my fingerprints on, impart my
- 0:58different values as far as what I think A-Team should be and
- 1:02could be, and just inspired dreamers to reach for what they
- 1:07can be. And you know, of course, like
- 1:10any transition, it started off rough at the beginning.
- 1:14You know, you're trying to convince people to believe in
- 1:17you, but they haven't seen, haven't been given any reason to
- 1:22believe in you yet. So it takes time to build trust.
- 1:24And I think that's the first thing you gotta do.
- 1:26You gotta say, yes, I want them to learn this.
- 1:30Yes, I want them to do that. But first I have to prove to
- 1:33them that my way of doing things actually works.
- 1:37So that was a little bit of a test for me, took a lot of
- 1:39patience. Some people jump ship.
- 1:43You know, that's something you have to be OK with when you're
- 1:45trying to build something great. And but the majority people of
- 1:49people, I would say the right people stayed on board.
- 1:53So in that first year, you know, we were not ranked pretty much
- 1:59anywhere, not in the County Down the state level and certainly
- 2:03not on the regional or national level.
- 2:07But by the end of that first year, by the end of the indoor
- 2:11season, that first year, we were #8 in the country, in the 4 by
- 2:18400 meters, we had started off at 4:10 in December and we were
- 2:21at 356 by February, heading internationals.
- 2:25And you know, for me, that was huge, 'cause I was telling them
- 2:29it's coming, it's coming. And even when they were a 410
- 2:32team, you know, I let them know that you guys are gonna be 1 of
- 2:36the top teams in the country. And it's hard for them to see
- 2:38that at the time, but I saw the qualities in that 410 run that I
- 2:43knew would lead to them being great.
- 2:46All they had to do was keep working, keep buying in, and
- 2:49then find that belief system and that confidence.
- 2:52And I truly believe when you do that, anything's possible.
- 2:56So that continued to snowball. You know, we went to nationals,
- 3:00didn't do great, ran in the championship section when we
- 3:04probably could have won or made the podium in the Rising Star
- 3:07section. But for them, one of the things
- 3:10that was important was that they wanted to, they made it to
- 3:13championship, which is something that wasn't even a possibility
- 3:16in their minds at the at the beginning of the year.
- 3:18So they want to experience that. So I was all for it.
- 3:21You know, I didn't think I knew that it would be a big stage, a
- 3:25much bigger stage than what they were used to or prepared for,
- 3:28honestly. But sometimes I feel like you
- 3:32have to get on that stage, see what it's about, get your butt
- 3:35kicked to truly understand, OK, that's this is what it takes to
- 3:40get on that level. You know, we figured out how to
- 3:42get to the level. But this is how we stay there.
- 3:44That's how we be competitive there.
- 3:46So I let them do it. They got their butts kicked and
- 3:51we grew from it. So we move on, move on.
- 3:53Fast forward, you know, the next year, one of those members of
- 3:57the team ended up breaking the 200 meter records.
- 3:59Indoor broke Sidney Mclaughlin's New Jersey State record with the
- 4:03time of 2397. First girl ever in New Jersey
- 4:06State history to run under 24 seconds in the indoor 200.
- 4:10We just continue to build and build and build.
- 4:14I think we were all high school, all Americans at New Balance
- 4:18Nationals probably four or five times over the next two years.
- 4:25Constantly on the podium and really made a name for ourselves
- 4:28as a track and field program. And that was very important
- 4:32'cause we wanted to, We kept seeing those teams that are
- 4:35highlighted and and performed well on the national stage and
- 4:39we wanted to be mentioned with those teams and we wanted to
- 4:41compete against those teams. But like many things, it takes
- 4:43time. So we took our time to grind and
- 4:47get to where we need to get. And, you know, as each class
- 4:50came in and saw what the ones ahead of them were doing and
- 4:54what they were shooting for and the way they worked every day
- 4:56and what their work ethic was like, it inspired a new, I won't
- 5:01say generation, but a new group. And then that next group would
- 5:05aspire to do even more than the group before them.
- 5:08So we've kind of created an amazing system of come in, have
- 5:15big, big dreams, pursue those big dreams, see others, you
- 5:20know, make dreams come true. Believe that you 2 can do that.
- 5:24And then, you know, take the lid off of it, take the ceiling off
- 5:27and say, how, how can I get there?
- 5:29And how can I get beyond that? And that's kind of what we've
- 5:32seen. You know, at one point in time
- 5:35being, being in the championship section at nationals was like
- 5:39the ultimate goal. That turned into making making
- 5:42the podium. That turned into breaking a
- 5:45state record, that turned into signing a deal with Nike.
- 5:48That turned into competing, you know, at World Championships,
- 5:53winning international medals. So we've like really raised the
- 5:56bar as far as what what our standard is, you know, what
- 6:00we're looking to do, but also as far as what's possible.
- 6:04And, you know, I always tell my athletes, if you believe it and
- 6:07you're willing to work for it and you're willing to sacrifice
- 6:10for it and you're willing to take that path, that's, you
- 6:14know, that whether, as they say, the road less traveled where,
- 6:18you know, it's an unknown, you don't know if you're gonna make
- 6:20it. You don't know what's gonna
- 6:21happen. But if you're willing to take
- 6:24that route, knowing that you don't have all the answers, but
- 6:28you still wanna shoot for it, anything's possible.
- 6:32And I think we've been able to see that.
- 6:35And so when I think about my book, that's one of the things I
- 6:39think about. You know, I think my book really
- 6:41speaks to for coaches, but also for parents and also for the
- 6:45athletes themselves to really take a step back, you know, get
- 6:49away from the pressures of I wanna win, I wanna, I wanna be
- 6:55featured. I want the fame.
- 6:57I want my athletes to have the fame because there's a lot of
- 6:59that going on in the world right now.
- 7:03Step away from that for a second and instead just think about why
- 7:07you're doing what you're doing. What made you get into coaching?
- 7:10What made you wanna work with the youth?
- 7:14Whatever. And it doesn't matter which age
- 7:16group you're in or you work with.
- 7:19It doesn't matter how long you've been doing it.
- 7:22What is you need to find that reason because that's what
- 7:24should fuel you. Not the Instagram posts and not
- 7:27the not the potential NIO deals and all this other stuff, but
- 7:32that singular purpose for why you got into it.
- 7:35For me, my thing was my career and I did a lot of things in my
- 7:40career. I broke records here and there.
- 7:44I ran on a Division One level, I ran professionally and I did a
- 7:49lot of things that were that I can be proud of.
- 7:52But I've also made plenty, plenty of mistakes along the
- 7:54way. So my thing was I wanna get into
- 7:57this because if I knew then what I know now, how much further
- 8:03could I have taken this dream? So since I have the knowledge
- 8:06from the experiences, even if they're all from, you know,
- 8:10missteps, if I can pass it on to them to help them not to misstep
- 8:14on certain things and give them the perspective that they need
- 8:17to tackle these different obstacles, then they truly can
- 8:20breakthrough and get to wherever they want to go in this sport
- 8:23and in life. You know, some of my toughest
- 8:26life lessons came through the sport of track and field.
- 8:30And I'd like to say that they shaped me to be the man that I
- 8:32am today. So if you look through my book,
- 8:35you know, you see things like positive affirmations.
- 8:38So there's this chapter called can't Say, can't you know?
- 8:41So that chapter is all about how what you say and what you get
- 8:47and your results go hand in hand.
- 8:49If you're constantly saying, oh, I can't do that, Oh, I can't do
- 8:52this, and you're placing limitations on yourself, you
- 8:55would not be able to do those things.
- 8:57You know, if you're constantly setting the bar low for yourself
- 8:59because you know, it's a low hanging fruit, it's easy to
- 9:01reach. You're going to get that fruit,
- 9:04but you're going to miss out on what you could have gotten had
- 9:06you stress yourself a little bit more.
- 9:09So there's chapters about that. There's chapters about just the
- 9:13mental side of of training. There's chapters about how to
- 9:16best handle athletes who are injured or dealing with injuries
- 9:20and how to keep them engaged and keep them feeling like a part of
- 9:23the team because it's so easy to get down on yourself and get
- 9:27depressed because you're not doing what you love.
- 9:29So constantly engaging them, keeping them, keeping them
- 9:33engaged and helping them to see that, hey, even though this is
- 9:37not fun, this sucks, it's temporary and there will be a
- 9:41point in time where you're back out here doing what you love.
- 9:45But the most important thing is that in the meantime, you do all
- 9:47the things you can to make sure you're prepared for that moment.
- 9:51Whether that's the positive reinforcement, mental, mentally,
- 9:55or that's, you know, doing push ups or that's doing core work,
- 9:58different things like that, that you are able to do while you're
- 10:01injured that don't further, you know, push the injury, but that
- 10:06allow you to feel more prepared when you come back so that you
- 10:09don't have as long of a of a rest period when you return.
- 10:14So lots of things of that nature, Just trying to tackle
- 10:17all the different angles of what coaching is today, what's
- 10:22important in our in our profession and how we can make
- 10:29our athletes to be the absolute best people that they can be.
- 10:32You know, if you help somebody overcome a fear, that translates
- 10:37to other areas of their life. If you help somebody build
- 10:39confidence, they'll be more confident in other areas of
- 10:41their life. And you know, the good thing
- 10:44about our sport is that it, it'll put them things on
- 10:48display. You know, it'll put out there
- 10:50what situations make you fearful.
- 10:53You know, you'll see it in, in training or you'll see it in a
- 10:56meet or you'll see it in this particular situation where
- 10:59there's pressure. And then you as a coach have the
- 11:02ability to then use those situations to work those through
- 11:05those fears and face those fears and conquer those fears and
- 11:08those doubts. So, and then I mean, I've, I've
- 11:11been in in this sport since I was five years old.
- 11:14And you know, my mother was a track star, ran with Carol Lewis
- 11:17and Carl Lewis back in the day and ran for the USA Air Force
- 11:22team. So I've been around the track
- 11:25forever. And I think that, you know, this
- 11:28is just unlike any other sport. You know, this sport can really
- 11:32change your life and it changed mine.
- 11:33I never thought I'd be coaching. My, my dream plan was to run
- 11:39track sign like $1,000,000 endorsement deal and walk away
- 11:44from it. And now it consumes my life more
- 11:47than it did when I was competing, but in the most
- 11:50positive ways. You know, it doesn't feel like I
- 11:53like I work. It feels like I'm just doing
- 11:55what I love every single day. You know, the bonds I've been
- 11:58able to build with my athletes have like, are priceless.
- 12:01You know, they're, they're extensions of my family at this
- 12:04point. You know, those are my nieces
- 12:05and nephews. The bonds I've been able to
- 12:07build with their parents have been priceless.
- 12:10You know, those are lifelong friends from here on out because
- 12:16on their end, they trusted me with their kids, which means the
- 12:19world to me 'cause I have three sons of my own.
- 12:22And trusting other people with your kids is huge.
- 12:24So, you know, I'm grateful to them for that.
- 12:26But then on the other side, you know, the fact that I was able
- 12:30to deliver on some of the promises I made to those parents
- 12:33in terms of the kids, their careers, you know, like it's
- 12:36lifeline long bonds going forward.
- 12:39So my biggest piece of advice to all the coaches, all the
- 12:43athletes, all the parents out there, it is never stop
- 12:46dreaming. You know, you never know where
- 12:48you're gonna end up. Stay open minded because a
- 12:53closed door could be the very door that leads you to your
- 12:56future. So always be open minded to that
- 13:00and just always, always bet on yourself, you know, give it your
- 13:03all. Don't skip any steps and know
- 13:07that it's gonna work out, maybe not in the time that you think
- 13:10it will. You know, in this sport, you're
- 13:11not gonna run APR every single race.
- 13:13The better you get it, the more the PR's are harder to come come
- 13:17by. So it's important to be patient.
- 13:21It's important to find the little wins in what you're doing
- 13:23every day. It's important to try to get a
- 13:26little bit better at something every single day.
- 13:29And eventually those little puzzle pieces of training and
- 13:32competing and mental prep and positive thinking come together
- 13:37and you get the masterpiece you're looking for.
- 13:39Thank you so much. And again, I'm Coach Dunk and my
- 13:42book is Coaches Playbook, a guide to inspiring better
- 13:47athletes and better people. And it's in store.
- 13:50It's on Amazon.com, but it's also on barnesandnoble.com.
- 13:54Thank you very much. And I just want to thank God for
- 13:56this gift to be able to inspire others.
- 13:58And I want to thank my family for being so patient with me.
- 14:01This is not an easy career. It takes a lot of time away from
- 14:04them and they're super supportive, super encouraging
- 14:09and always just show me love. So definitely want to shout them
- 14:12out because I'm very blessed to have them in my life.
