- 1:03In this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast,
- 1:06join Kim Miller and Erica Close in a conversation as we walk with Jesus.
- 1:11In today's conversation, we're chatting about what life looks like when we trust
- 1:17in the faithfulness of God.
- 1:20Well, welcome back to our podcast, everyone. I am Erica Close,
- 1:24and I'm here with Kim Miller.
- 1:25Hello, and thank you for joining us in this podcast. We are excited,
- 1:30and today we are talking about what it looks like to trust in a faithful God.
- 1:36And if you listen to our podcast regularly and you caught Monday's podcast, that was episode 612.
- 1:43The Faithfulness of God, you heard some great teaching on what it means that
- 1:48God is faithful and examples from his word about the faithfulness of God.
- 1:55And I believe that we know that God is faithful,
- 2:00but I wanted to take a little bit of time in today's podcast to dig into some
- 2:06of the scriptures that Kim brought out in Monday's podcast and look at what
- 2:11it really looks like when we live in a way that shows that we trust in God.
- 2:18So in Monday's podcast, Kim talked about a few different passages,
- 2:23and I want to key in really closely on the passage in Lamentation.
- 2:27It was Lamentations 3, 22 through 24. So if you've got your Bible,
- 2:32we would love you to grab that and to follow along with us as we talk about it.
- 2:39But that is the passage that Kim keyed off of as she went throughout episode 612.
- 2:45So I'm going to go ahead and just read that, and then I think maybe we can jump
- 2:49into some of the finer points about what it looks like in our life.
- 2:52So Lamentations 3, 22 through 24 says, It is of the Lord's mercies that we are
- 2:59not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning.
- 3:04Great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul.
- 3:09Therefore will I hope in him.
- 3:12And I encourage you to go back to Monday's podcast if you didn't get to listen
- 3:16to it, because you'll get some of the background on this passage.
- 3:21But as we jump into this passage, Camus made a statement in the podcast on Monday
- 3:25where you said that we are not to add to the Word, but to ingest the Word.
- 3:33So before we jump into this passage where we're going to ingest it and talk
- 3:37about it, what does that really mean to you? That we're not to add to the word,
- 3:41but we're to ingest the word.
- 3:44I think sometimes we want the word to say something.
- 3:48We want it to say something that moves an answer or gives us a direction that
- 3:56is more in alignment with our thoughts and our ideas.
- 4:00And so we will add meaning into verses that contextually are just not there.
- 4:08The meaning is very clear and we want it to be something else.
- 4:13And so I think sometimes we try to add to the scriptures.
- 4:17And I think a lot of times people add to the scriptures by literally removing things.
- 4:23And I know that sounds weird, but you add to the scriptures a somewhat false
- 4:29approval to do this or that because you just leave the verses out that tell
- 4:34you otherwise. That makes sense.
- 4:36And so we have to read the Word of God for what the Word of God says,
- 4:41not slanted in the direction we want it to be.
- 4:46God's ways are higher than our ways,
- 4:48and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts, and His Word is truth.
- 4:53We don't get to be truth.
- 4:56Truth is the Word, and so it's the standard by which we must measure all thoughts and actions Bye.
- 5:06And it's the standard that we have to take in as it is, right?
- 5:11If we're ingesting it, we are taking it in as it is.
- 5:15It's not getting changed, right? It's not going to get altered when we take it in.
- 5:21Right. We are, and we have to take the word in piece by piece,
- 5:27but not out of context. Right.
- 5:30So I can't absorb Genesis to Revelations in one day.
- 5:36I can't read that fast. You might be able to, but I can't.
- 5:40And even if that's the case, I have to read something, study it,
- 5:45look at it, pray about it, read it, see how it fits in other places.
- 5:51And I have to take it bit by bit. But I can't just take a little piece out and
- 5:58not let it fit into anything else.
- 6:00And that's what I mean by ingesting it, believing what it says for exactly as
- 6:08it is and not adding any salt and pepper or steak sauce on it.
- 6:11Just take it. It is what it is. There we go.
- 6:16All right. So I just want to talk about that. I really liked that.
- 6:19I was thinking about that as we were starting. Okay. So let's hop into the Lamentations passage.
- 6:26So Lamentations 22 says,
- 6:28has a phrase in it that says, we are not consumed. It is of the Lord's mercies
- 6:33that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not.
- 6:39And I was thinking about what it means to not be consumed.
- 6:46And to me, it means that we are not consumed by the fires of this world,
- 6:53right? Like there are things that just happen.
- 6:56There are fires that need to be put out.
- 7:00And we may have to deal with fires and put fires out or maybe deal with the
- 7:07aftermath of fires, but we don't have to be consumed by them.
- 7:12And I think that it goes beyond just not being affected by them.
- 7:18But when I think about how so often things happen and we just get them stuck
- 7:24in our minds and we can't ever let them go. And they consume us.
- 7:29So I think to me, the Lord is saying that we do not need to be consumed by the
- 7:36fear and the worry about the things of this life or allow our minds to be consumed
- 7:41by the things of this world.
- 7:43I think that's a wonderful interpretation of what he's saying here.
- 7:49Especially the consumption of the world.
- 7:52And when we are consumed, I think that we become overwhelmed,
- 7:56we become stressed, many times we become depressed.
- 8:01I mean, there are medical reasons why those things happen as well,
- 8:04but a lot of us are bringing that on ourselves because we are navigating this
- 8:11world outside of the boundaries of God.
- 8:16And I also believe there's another interpretation of this passage that goes along with that.
- 8:22Is that he is so great.
- 8:26That if it wasn't for his mercy, grace, and compassion, his presence would consume us.
- 8:31But instead of consuming us with his greatness, he empowers us with his greatness. I love that.
- 8:40And his love is beyond measure and, frankly, beyond my comprehension.
- 8:48Because it's never-ending. And it seems like there's more and more and more and more of it.
- 8:55To your point about there being more and more and more of it,
- 8:57the next verse in Lamentations 3, 23, 22 ends with, His compassions fail not,
- 9:06and 23 starts with, They are new every morning.
- 9:09And I want to just talk for a minute about the new every morning idea.
- 9:16To me, that is sort of the perfect do-over, right?
- 9:21Every morning when we awaken, his compassions, his protection, they're all there.
- 9:28We haven't used them all up the day before.
- 9:32And we awaken each day with a day that is fresh.
- 9:37And we have that opportunity, like you said in your message,
- 9:40to talk to him before our feet hit the floor.
- 9:44And ask Him to lead and guide and direct us throughout that day.
- 9:49I'm so thankful that they are new every morning.
- 9:52I think that is also a beautiful picture of light overcoming darkness.
- 9:58He is the light, and sin is the darkness.
- 10:03And light always dispels darkness, and God always defeats darkness.
- 10:10And so I think he's showing us that each morning we get up is a reminder that
- 10:15he is greater than the darkness around us.
- 10:18I think it's a reminder that each morning there is joy cometh in the morning, he says.
- 10:26And then in Psalms, he also explains to us that in his presence, there is joy.
- 10:32So he is light and we've come through the night.
- 10:36He's defeated the darkness and we
- 10:39are in the presence of his light there is joy evermore
- 10:42and i believe this this verse in
- 10:46lamentations is jeremiah explaining
- 10:50to the people who are in deep anguish and mourning that with god there is joy
- 10:57there is light there is victory that's so good let's talk about that last verse
- 11:02in that passage it says the lord is my portion saith my soul Therefore will I hope in Him.
- 11:10When I think about a portion, I think about it being the exact right amount
- 11:16of something that I need.
- 11:18Right? It is exactly what I need. And it's usually specific to you.
- 11:23Yes. So it's personal. It's personal. It reminds me of the verse in Psalm 16, 6, where it says,
- 11:34The lions have fallen unto me in pleasant places. Yea, I have a goodly heritage.
- 11:39You love that verse. I do love that verse. And it really is talking about the boundary lines.
- 11:43My boundaries that God has set for me have fallen in pleasant places.
- 11:51They have fallen in the right place.
- 11:55Because they align with his plan for you, which is to give you a hope and expect it in.
- 12:00And it's a plan just for me. It's a good plan. And he has a plan just for you.
- 12:05And each one of our listeners has their own individual plan.
- 12:08And he is enough for each of us, right?
- 12:13When you think about the portion, he is our portion.
- 12:17He is sufficient for all of our needs.
- 12:21For each situation we find ourselves in, he is our portion.
- 12:27He and him alone is enough.
- 12:31This doesn't have anything really to do with the sanctified interpretation of this verse,
- 12:38but I do often think of the fact that his portion is perfect for us,
- 12:43but if we wanted more of him, we could get more of him.
- 12:48We don't usually go for that, but we sure go for that second piece of strawberry pie, right? Yeah.
- 12:54You know, I read something a couple of days ago, and as I was listening to you
- 13:01in this last program on Monday's podcast,
- 13:04and this section right here where it says, He is my portion,
- 13:08it reminded me of Daniel 3,
- 13:12verses 16 through 20, which is the three Hebrew children in the fiery furnace.
- 13:17You even talked about that passage in the podcast, but, you know,
- 13:23when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are brought before the king, and they basically say,
- 13:32you know, we're not going to talk to you about this, right?
- 13:34I mean, he's saying, he's asking them, what are you doing? You're not bowing down to me.
- 13:40You know, you're continuing to pray to our Lord. and they say.
- 13:53But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods,
- 13:58nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
- 14:01And I thought, they knew their Lord would take care of them.
- 14:06He is their perfect portion, right? They asked for perfect deliverance.
- 14:13And I think they also understood that they may not know how the deliverance
- 14:18was going to come, but he would be right no matter how it was. Exactly.
- 14:22Because even if he did not, even if he did not deliver them from the fire furnace,
- 14:28they weren't going to bow because the Lord was still their portion.
- 14:32Even if they didn't get deliverance from the fiery furnace, what they had at
- 14:38that exact moment, the portion of God they had at that exact moment was more than enough. Right.
- 14:45It was exactly what they needed. Right. It's exactly, you know,
- 14:48we so often want somebody else's portion.
- 14:52Well, yes. We act like we're dissatisfied with what we have.
- 14:55Because we want somebody else's portion. Because we don't realize that we've
- 14:58got Jesus and that's enough.
- 15:00We don't realize that the portion is specifically custom made.
- 15:04Yes. We don't we don't understand that the armor of God is custom made.
- 15:08We don't understand that his plan for us isn't just an individualized plan based
- 15:17on the creation that he gave us,
- 15:19the skill sets that he imparted to us and the plan he has for us to do.
- 15:23I think that that portion piece is huge and he's faithful,
- 15:30but we often we stick some cogs in the wheel and stop the progress because we
- 15:36want somebody else's portion and it doesn't fit us.
- 15:40You can't wear my, well, you can wear my shirt. I can't wear yours.
- 15:45But we each have,
- 15:47the portion that we need. It's not just that. We each have the individualized,
- 15:53custom-made, perfect portion.
- 15:55Created for us by a perfect God. Who loves us. Yes.
- 16:01Yes. He loves us enough to forgive us. And, you know, I know that your message
- 16:06on Monday was about faithfulness, but also about the faithfulness of God to forgive, right?
- 16:13And how faithful He is when we need forgiveness, and we sin,
- 16:18and we are not honestly, you know, faithful to Him.
- 16:24It's incredible. It really is. And you referenced Isaiah 118,
- 16:29it said, come now, let us reason together.
- 16:31And that's the verse that goes on and says, that your sins be as scarlet,
- 16:34they'll be white as snow.
- 16:35It speaks beautifully to the promise that we have for forgiveness of our sins and salvation.
- 16:41But it really struck me as you were speaking, oh my goodness,
- 16:46this Lord wants to talk to me.
- 16:50Let us reason together. He wants you to understand. That's what I love about
- 16:53that. and I don't think I really made that very clear in the podcast on Monday.
- 16:58He wants you to understand. He wants you to love him, and he wants you to understand why you should.
- 17:05And he's patient, and he continually and consistently and faithfully gives you reasons to.
- 17:12Amen. It's incredible. It really is. And he's my friend. Yes, he is.
- 17:17And when you think of the personal, it's the perfect portion just for us.
- 17:23He can give us the perfect portion because he knows us.
- 17:27And we can trust the perfect portion because we know him.
- 17:32And he definitely knows more of us than we know of ourselves.
- 17:35Absolutely. I don't care how self-aware you are.
- 17:37Oh, I'm not nearly as self-aware of myself as aware of God is of me.
- 17:43No one is. Thank goodness.
- 17:46I'm so thankful for how aware and understanding God is of me.
- 17:52He has infinite understanding. He has infinite understanding.
- 17:54We said that in some verse. Yep, absolutely.
- 17:57It was Psalm 147.5. What does Psalms 147.5 say? Great is our Lord and of great
- 18:02power. His understanding is infinite.
- 18:05I love that. There's enough understanding for all of us.
- 18:10There's enough understanding to go around. And there's understanding that cannot
- 18:15be quantified. It just keeps going.
- 18:20He knows me, yet he loves me. Amen. So our podcast on Monday was about the faithfulness of God.
- 18:27And these verses demonstrate what that faithfulness looks like in our lives.
- 18:34As you go throughout the remainder of this week, it would just be our encouragement
- 18:39that you would go back and you would look at the scripture references,
- 18:43specifically all of the scriptures that are referenced in Monday's podcast in episode 612.
- 18:49All those verses are linked in the show notes, and you can go back and click
- 18:53on them and read them at any time.
- 18:55And we would just encourage you to do so, because God is incredibly faithful.
- 19:01He calls us to be faithful to Him, but He is faithful to us.
- 19:06Thank you for listening today, friends. Remember that you are loved. Jesus loves you.
