- 0:00Speaker 1: We'll talk a little bit more about this in the
- 0:02four o'clock hour because we've got of a real pointed
- 0:05example and it's and it's more about how fans and
- 0:11media and certain different people get antsy this time of
- 0:15year when things are not going the way that you
- 0:18think they should be. And we did talk a little
- 0:20bit about it obviously in the first hour of the
- 0:22program when we had the audio from Jerry Jones and
- 0:25how he's kind of bristling a little bit and get
- 0:28a little sensitive, you know. So there's some things that
- 0:31are making him not be in the best of moods
- 0:35these days when it comes to interviews or whatever. Well,
- 0:40it would probably be this way, I would say, obviously.
- 0:45And this is not whatever flexing on Oklahoma or anything
- 0:50like that. We just we just read the reports and
- 0:52the stuff going on. Remember in this town, with this school.
- 0:59The weekly press conference with Long Corn's head coach Steve
- 1:02Sarkisian is on Mondays. It's part of our Longhorns Monday presentation.
- 1:07We begin our coverage from the UT campus at eleven
- 1:10o'clock in the morning on Monday. Sark goes live at
- 1:12eleven thirty with his weekly press conference. We do that
- 1:16that's our Longhorns Monday presentation. Then we recapped the news
- 1:18conference during these proceedings on this show the afternoon. A
- 1:23lot of college football programs do their press conferences on Monday,
- 1:28some like Oklahoma do it on Tuesday, So that meant
- 1:33today was the first time for Brent Venables to face
- 1:41the media since the postgame press conference on Saturday. Now,
- 1:45you were pretty busy after the game. They're the cop
- 1:49bol getting to the Texas media ambue. You weren't in
- 1:51the Oklahoma news conference. Were you were? Did you?
- 1:54Speaker 2: Did you get there in time?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. One goes before the other. That's why
- 1:57we were to get Sar called so quickly while Venables
- 1:59was on the Were you able to get a vibe
- 2:03for how it was going and the things that we're
- 2:09having to talk about.
- 2:09Speaker 2: He was spicy and he was asked some questions that
- 2:13we talked about yesterday. When Sark was asked about the
- 2:17Billy Bowman and the Jack title comments, and Sark gave
- 2:19an answer which we weren't surprised.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Not my problem we won, is what he said.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Venables just asked the question by Barry Trammel from
- 2:27the I don't know if he's with the Oklahoma and.
- 2:29Speaker 1: He's with the Tulsa World Now, Barry Trammel was And
- 2:32Barry was the one who asked the question last week.
- 2:35And I said, this is a classic hard boiled sports writer,
- 2:40sports columnist question. It's a kind of question that Kirk Bowles,
- 2:44formerly the Austin American Statesman now the Houston Chronicle, would ask.
- 2:48It's a question that Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning
- 2:50News might ask, and it's certainly a question that Barry
- 2:54Trammel would ask. He asked Brent Venables when text this
- 3:00is good, like, this is your job harder? And and
- 3:05was like, I don't you know, I don't pay attention
- 3:08what they're doing that has nothing to do with what
- 3:09we're trying to establish our own thing, blah blah blah.
- 3:11But he said, does it make your job harder when
- 3:14they're good? So so Barry asked that question. So what
- 3:18did Barry ask him on Saturday?
- 3:19Speaker 2: Well, he asked Venables if he was alarmed at the
- 3:24difference in talent between Texas and Oklahoma and what we've
- 3:29seen in two of the last three years. Inventables gave
- 3:32a very spicy answer. I don't remember the exact quote verbatim,
- 3:36and he was morely, I don't know, alarmed, I don't know.
- 3:39You could tell he was very annoyed with the question,
- 3:41and he was asked something similar about the result and
- 3:44kind of fired back two three four word response. But
- 3:49a lot of it was coming from the Oklahoma side,
- 3:52and you can kind of tell. You can always kind
- 3:54of tell how the fan base is thinking based off
- 3:58the reporters questions, because obviously they're riding to their fans,
- 4:02and what they write is shaped by what the fans
- 4:05perception of the program is. And the perception Oklahoma right
- 4:08now is not that great for Brent Vnnables and a
- 4:10thirty four to three loss does not help. That's now
- 4:13two out of three games against taxes where they have
- 4:15failed to score a touchdown. I mean, forty nine to
- 4:18IZ think was embarrassing in year one, but year three
- 4:20for Ventables, thirty four to three might be even worse
- 4:23because he's had two years to prepare for this season.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So things aren't great in Norman right now. Well, here's
- 4:29the reason why I bring all this up. There's two things.
- 4:32First of all, the media in Oklahoma is always fascinated
- 4:38and They're not the only ones in this town. It
- 4:41gets this way sometimes, and it certainly does in other towns,
- 4:43both at the NFL and collegiate level, but they're fascinated
- 4:47with the job security of coaches. I got to ask what.
- 4:51I did three or four interviews last week, as I
- 4:53always do that week with Oklahoma media, and on one
- 4:55of the shows, I actually was asked, if Sark loses
- 4:58this game to Oklahoma's E in trouble? Really okay? I
- 5:03was like, no, No, everybody's behind him. It's okay. I've
- 5:07been asked that question every single year that I've been
- 5:11on that I've done a show going all the way
- 5:14back to the first part of this decade, not this decade,
- 5:18the first part of the century, early two thousands. If
- 5:21Mac loses this, is he gonna lose his job? Is
- 5:22he in trouble? Blah blah blah, And asked that all
- 5:24the way up to me, and I didn't even really
- 5:26think that we get asked that this year, but I did,
- 5:29you know, if he loses this game, and are they
- 5:31you know?
- 5:32Speaker 2: So?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Anyway, at his news conference today, and this is the
- 5:36other part of this, Brent Vennables confirmed that he has
- 5:41discussed the possibility of red shirting Jackson Arnold since Michael
- 5:45Hawkins has assumed the role at quarterback. He did say
- 5:50that for now, Arnold will continue to be an option
- 5:55in the second half of the regular season. He said,
- 5:57it's been discussed between us. What was told to Jay
- 6:00is if we put you in, it's because we need
- 6:02you to help us go win. We're certainly sensitive to everything.
- 6:05We're not sitting here with our head in the sand
- 6:07or naive to what it is. But man, he's a
- 6:09great teammate. He wants to be the starting quarterback at
- 6:12the University of Oklahoma.
- 6:13Speaker 2: We were debating this in the press box in that
- 6:15second half when the outcome was not in doubt. Hawkins
- 6:20was struggling and Arnold's on the sideline helmet on warming up.
- 6:23Are they going to put him in? Are they going
- 6:25to try and keep his red shirt in tact? And
- 6:28it appears they're going to let him red shirt this season,
- 6:31which is kind of surprising because I don't think there's
- 6:32anything from Michael Hawkins junior that gives a lot of
- 6:35Oklahoma fans hope.
- 6:36Speaker 1: But well, and that rides only second only to the
- 6:40hottest speculation is that Jackson Arnold will be the starting
- 6:43quarterback for the Mississippi State Bulldogs next year, playing for
- 6:46his old offensive coordinator, Jeff Levy, who's now the head coach,
- 6:50although they seem to like Michael Van Buren, the freshman
- 6:54this year who's playing quarterback for them.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Played well against Georgia this past weekend.
- 6:57Speaker 1: And remember they had Blake Shapin coming back next year
- 7:00because he had gotten injured and couldn't do it. All right,
- 7:02We'll be back to wrap up Hour number two here
- 7:04on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
