- 0:00Welcome to World View Matters, discussing controversial issues, discerning current events,
- 0:10defending biblical Christianity.
- 0:13No topic, off limits.
- 0:16And now, here's your host, David Fierazzo.
- 0:19Hello, friends.
- 0:20Thank you so much for tuning in for sharing the podcast.
- 0:23God bless you, brothers and sisters in Christ.
- 0:25I've got a special treat for you today.
- 0:27We've got Dr. Urban Lootser on the program.
- 0:30And there's a phenomenal new book out called The Eclipse of God.
- 0:34You guys are going to love this.
- 0:35We're going to dive into it in a minute.
- 0:37But I just want to quote some of the information that was sent to me on the book.
- 0:41Now he encourages Christians to be faithful in the midst of the irrational and absurd.
- 0:49And that's what we're seeing worldwide, particularly in our culture.
- 0:53And we're going to have him respond to that.
- 0:55He encourages believers.
- 0:57And he says America is experiencing a near total eclipse.
- 1:01We see the increase in violence, treachery, the abuse of the law, depravity, and more.
- 1:07He says darkness is being protected and normalized while light is being vilified and criminalized.
- 1:15And the eclipse of God, the book, is not just a warning to the church, by the way,
- 1:21and to be faithful stewards.
- 1:23It's a call to recognize the danger we face when we tinker with transcendent morality
- 1:30given to us by our creator.
- 1:32And finally, Urban Lootser says when the rule of law is replaced by the quest for power,
- 1:39freedom ends.
- 1:41And then he asks, are we ready?
- 1:43Well, I want to bring him in now.
- 1:44Dr. Urban Lootser is pastor emeritus of the Moody Church where he served as the senior
- 1:49pastor for 36 years.
- 1:52He is featured speaker and and and podcasters authored some amazing books, including one
- 1:58of them.
- 1:59I talked to him about a few years ago.
- 2:00We will not be silenced.
- 2:02And a couple of years ago, he wrote no reason to hide and many others.
- 2:06But he has a radio program called running to win.
- 2:10It's a daily Bible teaching broadcast.
- 2:12And that's on over a thousand outlets in the US and across more than 50 countries in
- 2:16seven languages.
- 2:18Richard Lootser also is a prolific author.
- 2:21He's written 70 books more than 70 now.
- 2:24And the one we're going to talk about today is called the Eclipse of God.
- 2:28Urban Lootser, thank you so much for taking the time to be in world view matters.
- 2:32Good to see you.
- 2:33Thank you so much, David.
- 2:35And the book that you referenced, the Eclipse of God, just came out recently.
- 2:40So it certainly is my most recent book.
- 2:43And let's talk about the idea of an eclipse.
- 2:48Sure.
- 2:49When there is an eclipse of the sun, the moon comes between the sun and the earth.
- 2:54It doesn't affect the sun.
- 2:56It shines as brightly as ever.
- 2:59But I'm saying in the book that the moon of secularism has brought us into darkness.
- 3:05And we have to understand the darkness and your intro was right on when you said we
- 3:10are fighting in an irrational world.
- 3:14And the reason for that is because we have turned our back on God, the creator.
- 3:19And of course, because we've done that, we are rebelling against the created order.
- 3:26But David, if I might just take a moment to explain to people, what I do in the book
- 3:32is I show that the shadows of Europe have come to the United States.
- 3:36That's kind of the opening.
- 3:38Hitchie, who died in the year 1900, proclaimed the death of God.
- 3:44And he said, do we not hear the noise of the gravediggers who have buried God?
- 3:48And so I asked myself the question, who might he be referring to?
- 3:53Karl Marx, who attacked God as ruler, Darwin, who attacked God as creator, Freud, who attacked
- 4:00God as lawgiver.
- 4:02I want to pause just a moment and comment on Darwin and then tell you about how important
- 4:07this is, not only for the church in Europe, it was important, but also for us.
- 4:13But Darwin, in the book, I quote him as saying that the baboon is our grandfather.
- 4:19David, if the baboon is our grandfather, we have no argument against abortion, against
- 4:26infanticide, euthanasia.
- 4:29We do that with animals.
- 4:31And I point out how the animal rights movement wants to elevate animals to the level of humans,
- 4:37but they actually bring humans down to the level of animals.
- 4:41And then you have Freud with his pleasure, principle of sexuality, believe that there
- 4:46should be no restrictions, and this opens the door also to pedophilia.
- 4:51Now Nietzsche proclaimed the death of God, and then very quickly, he proclaimed that
- 4:57the cathedrals of Europe have become the tombs of God.
- 5:01Go throughout Europe.
- 5:03You find that many of the cathedrals are libraries and mosques and go to where Bunyan was in
- 5:10England, Bedford, that cathedral is a nightclub.
- 5:15His prediction came to pass.
- 5:17The question is what we learn from it, and I discuss those things in the book and then
- 5:21one other thing, and then I'm going to get to all of your questions.
- 5:25There was an article in the economist some time ago that says God is becoming as liberal
- 5:31as we are.
- 5:33As a matter of fact, the online version was nearer my God to me.
- 5:39So I have a chapter by that title, emphasizing the fact that we have manufactured in America
- 5:46and in the West generally our own ideas of God.
- 5:51We have domesticated him.
- 5:54We now have a God that we can control.
- 5:57And so I go into that.
- 5:58And then the article also says, nobody believes in the mighty almighty of the Old Testament.
- 6:04The God who smote the Egyptians, the God who smoked Sodom and Gomorrah.
- 6:08So I have a chapter on the Old Testament.
- 6:11The stoning of people, the killing of the Canaanites, the flood.
- 6:16And then one of the longest chapters is God more tolerant than he used to be.
- 6:21How do we manage the fact that the New Testament is entirely different?
- 6:26Is it safer to sin under grace than it was under law?
- 6:30And of course I show that God has not changed.
- 6:32And then after that the rest of the book is as you properly described showing that God
- 6:38is necessary for truth for law.
- 6:41And the last chapter which should raise some eyebrows is returning to the God of wrath
- 6:46and grace, not the God of unconditional love.
- 6:51So there you have the 30 mile high, 30 foot high summary of the book, the Eclipse of God.
- 7:00Oh phenomenal.
- 7:01I was going to ask you specifically about a few of those chapters, but I want to quote you
- 7:06from the book and I want to emphasize when you shared the importance of the sun still
- 7:10shining even though there's an eclipse.
- 7:13That's a very important point.
- 7:14You say the sun still shines behind the eclipse and not even a determined secular world
- 7:20can blot out the witness of God's servants who are dedicated to share the light.
- 7:28Dr. Luther, that's an important point because a lot of believers are well intentioned.
- 7:33They want to make an impact.
- 7:34They want to be salt and light, but they get discouraged and overwhelmed because of
- 7:38the darkness.
- 7:39Could you speak to them and just encourage them in the midst of what we're seeing today?
- 7:44I'd be glad to, as a matter of fact, as you well know, we're living in a country that
- 7:48is very polarized politically, racially and in other ways.
- 7:53So let me speak to the moment that we find ourselves in.
- 7:57And this is my encouragement and I point this out in the book.
- 8:01When Isaiah went into the temple, it says, in the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the
- 8:07Lord, high and lifted up and his train filled the temple.
- 8:12What God was saying to Isaiah is this, Uzziah is dead.
- 8:18He was a relatively good King.
- 8:19He rained for 52 years.
- 8:22So the throne of Israel is empty.
- 8:25But Isaiah, I want you to know that the throne in heaven is well occupied.
- 8:31Thank you very much.
- 8:33And when we read the news and we hear the accusations back and forth politically and
- 8:38in every other way, I want to urge believers to look behind the headlines and know that
- 8:46God still does rule.
- 8:48God still does rule.
- 8:50He is King.
- 8:51He is Lord.
- 8:52He sets up leaders.
- 8:54He takes others down.
- 8:56Sometimes he gives us leaders that are better than we deserve.
- 8:59Sometimes he gives us leaders that are worse than we deserve.
- 9:04And sometimes he gives us exactly what we deserve.
- 9:07But God is still God.
- 9:09He's not abandon his people.
- 9:11And the question I tried to deal within the book is, what does it look like to be
- 9:15faithful to God in the midst of our eclipse?
- 9:21The subtitle of the book, by the way, friends, and I didn't give the website, forgive me,
- 9:25moodymedia.org.
- 9:26You can go to moodymedia.org or the book is obviously available on Amazon and it just
- 9:32is days out.
- 9:34So brand new.
- 9:35I can literally say hot off the presses for this book.
- 9:37But the subtitle, our nation's disastrous search for a more inclusive deity and what
- 9:44we must do about it.
- 9:46So Dr. Luther, with that, I want to just talk about inclusivity and talk about what you
- 9:51mentioned, one of the chapters in on page 127, chapter six is called, is God more tolerant
- 9:58than he used to be?
- 10:00Because it seems that we, not we Bible-believing Christians, but our nation's secular society
- 10:06has redefined tolerance and inclusivity.
- 10:09Would you care to speak to that, please?
- 10:10I'd be glad to speak to it.
- 10:13First of all, you mentioned how the book can be purchased.
- 10:16And also, if people go to eclips of God, without the word the, just eclips of God, there's
- 10:23a special website and that goes to our media ministry.
- 10:27So I want to highlight that.
- 10:29But also, of course, as you mentioned, Amazon, Christianbook.com and other places.
- 10:37And I believe so deeply that this message is needed.
- 10:40All right.
- 10:41Let's pick that up.
- 10:43Is God more tolerant than he used to be?
- 10:46The Old Testament you have the killing of the Canaanites, which I deal with in the previous
- 10:50chapter, you have stoning.
- 10:53How do we manage the fact that in the New Testament, things are very different?
- 10:58Well, in the New Testament, we don't have a theocracy.
- 11:03And the church, instead of being a nation localized within certain borders, the church
- 11:10exists throughout the world.
- 11:12It is a transnational community.
- 11:14So we do not have the same responsibilities as they had in the Old Testament.
- 11:20And God administers things differently today.
- 11:24And what the church should be doing is disciplining people for the infractions that were considered
- 11:31important in the Old Testament.
- 11:33And one thing I want to say, there were civil laws in the Old Testament that have absolutely
- 11:38no application today.
- 11:40All of the ceremonial laws were fulfilled in Christ.
- 11:44But here's what I want everyone to hear with clarity.
- 11:50The Bible says in the Book of Hebrews, if people were found guilty under Moses and were
- 11:56worthy of being stoned with two or three witnesses of how much greater punishment do you
- 12:03think will be found worthy, those who have trampled underfoot the blood of Christ.
- 12:11What the New Testament teaches is this, that the greater the grace, the greater the responsibility,
- 12:18this is chilling.
- 12:20When you read the book of revelations and the judgment that is to come, when you read
- 12:25that book of revelation, what you discover is the judgments that are coming upon this
- 12:31earth are far worse than anything in the Old Testament.
- 12:38God has not become more tolerant.
- 12:42He's dealing with things differently today.
- 12:44There's a different way to administer what he is doing through the church, but he is the
- 12:50Lord and he changes not.
- 12:54And as I emphasize in the book what we have done is we have paired God down to reasonable
- 12:59proportions.
- 13:00We have domesticated him.
- 13:02We've created our own vision of God.
- 13:06You know, David, people today don't mind saying they believe in God just as long as they
- 13:12are God.
- 13:13That's right.
- 13:14They're perfectly comfortable with saying that.
- 13:17And that's why in the previous chapter where I discuss nearer my God to me, I talk about
- 13:23the idea of, oh, I'm spiritual, but I'm not religious.
- 13:29I don't believe in anything specific, but I'm spiritual.
- 13:35This utterly is nonsense.
- 13:36You know, there's a book.
- 13:38There's a verse in Isaiah that just comes to mind now.
- 13:41I quoted in the book in which Isaiah said that false religions are like somebody who's
- 13:47hungry.
- 13:48He goes to sleep, dreams he is eating, but wakes up hungry still is like somebody who is
- 13:55thirsty.
- 13:57He goes to bed dreaming that he is drinking and then he wakes up and he is thirsty still.
- 14:04All of this nonsense that we have today about spirituality becomes the idea that your
- 14:12consciousness is really God.
- 14:15And God becomes whatever you want him to be, you can ignore him, you can use him, but
- 14:21he is at your disposal and essentially at your control.
- 14:26And you don't have to deal with sin, you just need help.
- 14:30You don't need redemption.
- 14:33So that's the God of popular culture.
- 14:35And I'll tell you this, read the New Testament, read the book of Revelation, and it gives
- 14:40you chills.
- 14:42Our God is a consuming fire and terrifying.
- 14:47Amen.
- 14:48And we unfortunately, especially in America, we are creating God's inner own image because
- 14:54we want to pursue pleasure and happiness rather than holiness.
- 14:59And we've got to take a brief pause with Dr. Irwin Luther in the book is called the Eclipse
- 15:03of God.
- 15:04We will be right back on World View Matters.
- 15:06Today's show is brought to you by Harbinger's Daily, the world news biblically understood.

- 15:28and email worldviewmattersatfpeusa.org, the website worldviewmatters.tv.
- 15:37Before we go back into the Eclipse of God, I want to mention one of Dr. Luther's previous
- 15:42books.
- 15:43I have this is phenomenal.
- 15:45We will not be silenced.
- 15:46I had the pleasure of speaking with him a few years ago on this book.
- 15:50This is where we're at today, friends.
- 15:52We cannot afford as believers in Christ to be silent and to be quiet in this culture
- 15:58where people need to hear the truth and they need to hear the whole gospel.
- 16:01So I'm off my soapbox now back to our guest, Dr. Irwin Luther.
- 16:06We talked a little bit about how we are in a very interesting culture and time today
- 16:10where there's irrationality where evil is being called good, good is called evil.
- 16:15You can be whatever gender you want to be and it's just irrational.
- 16:20And you say in the book, this is a battle that reason, science and biology cannot win.
- 16:28Explain further, please.
- 16:29Well, the reason that we can't win the war that way is because at root it's rebellion
- 16:35against God.
- 16:36You know, Al Mola wrote the intro to my book and he said it was a direct hit because
- 16:41at the end of the day, all of our problems are theological.
- 16:45But you know, David, you raised something else that I want to get to and that is the
- 16:49chapter that I have on truth, truth or truthiness speaking the truth in an age of lies.
- 16:57What parents need to do is to understand this.
- 17:00You send your child to university or to college.
- 17:04Oftentimes they come back and they think differently than you do.
- 17:09Boy, they sure do.
- 17:11What has happened?
- 17:12It used to be before men could have babies.
- 17:17It used to be that people believe that truth was objective.
- 17:21It existed outside of the mind.
- 17:23It was something to be sought today because of the exaltation of man and the fact that
- 17:30we believe that we are gods because of that that has now moved inside of us.
- 17:37So truth exists within us.
- 17:40And when you read history, for example, what you're looking for is not truth per se.
- 17:48You're looking for higher art keys.
- 17:51You are reading these texts as Karl Marx said we should looking for opportunities to maintain
- 17:59power.
- 18:00So the words of the text no longer have ultimate authority because they have no stable
- 18:05meaning.
- 18:07It is within you.
- 18:08As a matter of fact, I quote a teacher's manual in which it says no student should ever
- 18:15be told that he is wrong because it might damage his self esteem.
- 18:20So it gives all of these options and says what you must do is if he says something wrong,
- 18:27say, why, I never thought of that before or that's an idea.
- 18:30Let's hang on to that.
- 18:32And then about 12 other possibilities because after all history has become therapy.
- 18:41So your child comes back from college and sees everything through his viewpoint.
- 18:47And that that becomes the truth he has his truth and you have your truth.
- 18:52And that's the way we are one other thing I have to throw out.
- 18:54And that is this that in the book, I quote a university that has speech codes.
- 19:01They say don't use the word field.
- 19:04Don't use the word America.
- 19:06Don't use the word illegal because after all these are a pejorative.
- 19:13Now everyone listening David has to take a deep breath.
- 19:17What is going on there?
- 19:19What's going on is this it is not intended to elevate the debate.
- 19:25It's intended to silence the debate.
- 19:28You have no idea what's appropriate.
- 19:30When you go into a restaurant and still ask for a menu.
- 19:36Or is that a concession to masculine toxicity?
- 19:41So people have no idea.
- 19:43And so most college students end up self censoring themselves.
- 19:48And if they hear something that they don't agree with, they have to retreat to a safe place
- 19:53to lick the wounds that they're unappreciated.
- 19:56They're unappreciated, what shall we say, oppression.
- 20:02So that's the reason that they think differently.
- 20:06Truth is not exclusive and I point out in the book obviously it is.
- 20:11When Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life, he was shutting out all other options.
- 20:16Two plus two is equal to four.
- 20:19And there's only one right answer to that.
- 20:23And not an almost an infinite number of wrong answers.
- 20:27So this idea that we have inclusive truth ends up being irrational and nonsense.
- 20:35That's why I emphasize in the book the need for us to seek God.
- 20:40This is a spiritual battle that can't just be won by rationality because we are irrational.
- 20:47And every chapter in my book has a paragraph it ends with a paragraph of dependence upon
- 20:53God and then an action step.
- 20:57So in the book that we're talking about the eclipse of God, my desire is to help people
- 21:01to see what's happening to a culture during this very serious eclipse of God.
- 21:09I was going to thank you for putting those action steps in there at the end of each chapter
- 21:14very helpful.
- 21:16Before we run out of time I've got to get back to something you talk about called the
- 21:20great evangelical compromise regarding creation.
- 21:25Obviously if we the church don't get Genesis right and creation right and God's word
- 21:31is not inerrant and inspired, we're in a lot of trouble then go ahead and share more.
- 21:38David I can't believe this but you would be surprised that the number of professors even
- 21:43in so-called evangelical schools that deny the existence of Adam and Eve as they are
- 21:50described in the Bible and I name one or two of those scholars and I very hesitant to
- 21:57name people because they are believers they love God.
- 22:01But the idea is that we came up through the animal world through evolution and then there
- 22:08were homo sapiens and God somehow created within them in his own image.
- 22:15But they want to be able to unite the evolutionary theory with humanity.
- 22:21But I point out in the book this is so heartbreaking.
- 22:26Once you give up Adam and Eve you give up the contrast that Paul makes in Romans chapter
- 22:30five between Adam and Christ all that begins to fall apart.
- 22:36The whole idea of us being an Adam and here's the most concerning thing.
- 22:41There is no fall into sin.
- 22:45Everything just evolved.
- 22:47There is no fall.
- 22:49So what does that do to sin?
- 22:51What does that do to redemption?
- 22:54And yet I urge you parents who have children in evangelical schools, even Christian schools
- 23:02check to see whether they have professors who deny the existence of Adam and Eve as
- 23:10they are in the Bible.
- 23:11Now they will say, well I believe in Adam and Eve but not the Adam and Eve of the Bible.
- 23:19And you have to check that out because we're living it at a time when I hear here's the
- 23:24point that I make.
- 23:25Isn't it interesting that people like that take archaeology and paleology literally the
- 23:33Bible literally.
- 23:35So where does that lead us?
- 23:37And so parents, please check that out.
- 23:39You might be surprised.
- 23:40I saw a list of 60 supposed evangelicals who now deny the existence of Adam and Eve
- 23:50as found in the scriptures.
- 23:52Wow.
- 23:53Wow.
- 23:54Sad.
- 23:55And we know over the decades our even our seminaries have changed and these are some of
- 23:59the young pastors coming out of those seminaries.
- 24:02And we can't say they have a true biblical worldview but we've got to move on.
- 24:05This may be the last question, Dr. Luther in your book page 265.
- 24:10You say until we see hell as it is, we cannot appreciate grace as it is.
- 24:17And that is in the chapter you mentioned returning to the God of wrath and grace, not unconditional
- 24:24love.
- 24:25And unfortunately we hear a lot of the one side on God is love of course but God is also
- 24:30truth and I'd love for you to speak to that before we let you go.
- 24:34So God loves the world, John 316 and you can tell people God loves you but think of all
- 24:40of the judgments against the wicked.
- 24:43It is not an unconditional love.
- 24:44Now for those who are saved, it is an unconditional love based on John 17.
- 24:50But this whole idea that God loves me unconditionally, which means that I'm sleeping with my
- 24:56girlfriend but it doesn't matter because he accepts what I do unconditionally.
- 25:02That one person said well accepting me unconditionally is his job.
- 25:07So in evangelicalism today you have an over emphasis on the love of God, not that you
- 25:12can overemphasize it except that it is preached and it is not balanced with the awesome judgment
- 25:20of God.
- 25:22And I have to say this from my heart, that is one of the most powerful chapters I have
- 25:26ever written to bring people to repentance.
- 25:29And grace is not sweet until sin is bitter.
- 25:35And until we see what sin is leading to and the eventual judgment of hell which people
- 25:43don't talk about, that's why I urge people to cleave to Christ and believe on him because
- 25:50he saves us from the wrath to come.
- 25:53When was the last time you heard a sermon on the wrath of God?
- 25:56It's time that we hear some of those sermons.
- 26:00It's been a while.
- 26:01It's sad.
- 26:02And I think maybe Dr. Luther, some people have good intentions and I mean church leaders
- 26:06thinking we're going to attract the world by softening it and kind of watering it down
- 26:11and softening the wrath of God.
- 26:13But you cannot do that.
- 26:15That's just part of who he is and part of what the word of God teaches.
- 26:18And they get away from the whole council of God, but I know I'm preaching to the choir
- 26:21on that one.
- 26:22So friends, you can go to moodymedia.org.
- 26:26You can go to Amazon and so many other places.
- 26:29This will be likely another bestseller.
- 26:31Dr. Litzer, I just thank you so much for your ministry of all these years.
- 26:35Your clear voice speaking to this generation at this time.
- 26:39I know it's another very needed and relevant book with an important message for people,
- 26:45believers and non-believers need to read this.
- 26:47So thank you so much.
- 26:48Anything else you'd like to share before we let you go, sir?
- 26:52Simply this, remember there are two doctrines that destroy the church.
- 26:57One is the essential goodness of humanity and the other is the endless tolerance of a
- 27:03non-judgmental God.
- 27:06Make sure that we have a right view of God so that we might have a right view of grace.
- 27:12Excellent point.
- 27:13Wow.
- 27:14That's something to think about.
- 27:15Thank you for leaving us with that.
- 27:16Dr. Irwin Litzer, God bless you, sir.
- 27:18We appreciate your time.
- 27:20Thank you so much, David.
- 27:21You're most welcome.
- 27:22All right, guys, and these books, I encourage you to get them and share them.
- 27:28These messages need to get out, friends.
- 27:30The church needs to be restrained and sometimes in some cases we need some repentance in the
- 27:35church.
- 27:37Let's come back together.
- 27:38Let's be strong and let's speak to this generation that is hungry for truth and the gospel.
- 27:43And thank you for watching and for sharing the podcast.
- 27:45God bless you and as always, keep speaking the truth about things that matter.
