- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everyone, Goodmorrow. I'm James Palmer. With me is Steve Weisch.
- 0:10Speaker 2: This is the NFL Report, where we're gonna dissect the
- 0:14Speaker 2: biggest storylines across the NFL. But maybe more importantly, Steve,
- 0:17Speaker 2: we are going to discuss the storylines and topics that
- 0:20Speaker 2: maybe are getting overlooked.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Today.
- 0:22Speaker 2: We're gonna have Bridget Condon, We're gonna have Omar Ruiz,
- 0:24Speaker 2: We're gonna have Alonzo Highsmith with us, a former personnel
- 0:28Speaker 2: executive around the NFL. Pull back the curtain a little bit,
- 0:31Speaker 2: if you will, on what happens within NFL buildings during cutdowns.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Now here's the best part, Steve. We are versatile. We're
- 0:37Speaker 2: like Dion Sanders. We are not only a podcast with
- 0:40Speaker 2: NFL Report, we are also streaming on the NFL channel,
- 0:45Speaker 2: on to Be, on Roku, on Peacock, what else, Pluto,
- 0:49Speaker 2: all of those spots wherever you stream your television, look
- 0:51Speaker 2: for the NFL channel Mondays and Thursdays at seven fifteen.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So this is also a podcast twice a week, Steve,
- 0:58Speaker 2: and this is number one for us. Well, let's I'll
- 1:01Speaker 2: stop promoting us. I'll stop that. Everybody's gonna watch. Anyways,
- 1:03Speaker 2: Let's get right into it, and Chris Ballard, the Colts
- 1:07Speaker 2: general manager, saying, pretty much, Steve, what all of us
- 1:09Speaker 2: have been saying to one another privately about the situation
- 1:13Speaker 2: with their star running back Jonathan Taylor.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Take a listen, I.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Mean the situation. I'm not going to sit here and
- 1:20Speaker 3: give you some rosy picture like, oh, this is just
- 1:23Speaker 3: everything's okay.
- 1:23Speaker 4: No, it sucks.
- 1:25Speaker 3: It sucks for the Colts, It sucks for Jonathan Taylor,
- 1:28Speaker 3: and it sucks for our fans. It just it does,
- 1:33Speaker 3: and it's it's where we're at, and we've got to
- 1:36Speaker 3: work through it, and we're gonna do everything we can
- 1:40Speaker 3: to work through it. Relationships are repairable, They're repairable, Yeah.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Jap, I don't know if this relationship is repaarable.
- 1:51Speaker 1: First of all, I love the honesty.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I like, like it sucks, but what if?
- 1:55Speaker 5: What like? What have you ever heard of management in
- 1:57Speaker 5: any sport?
- 1:58Speaker 6: I've covered the NBA, I have covered collegiate football, I've
- 2:01Speaker 6: covered the NFL three years. A manager giveaway any leverage
- 2:05Speaker 6: by getting to the emotional point saying this sucks. We
- 2:09Speaker 6: don't hear it, so now it sucks for our fans.
- 2:12Speaker 5: It sucks. For us. It probably sucks for.
- 2:14Speaker 6: Him because he's the guy trying to negotiate a way
- 2:17Speaker 6: to get his star player back on the field. You
- 2:20Speaker 6: have your owner and Jim ersay a couple of weeks ago,
- 2:23Speaker 6: after a very public meeting in the trailer at training camp,
- 2:28Speaker 6: come out and basically say, yeah, we're not paying him.
- 2:31Speaker 6: After Anthony Rich, I'm sorry, after Jonathan Taylor, seems like
- 2:34Speaker 6: he went in there thinking that maybe they could work
- 2:35Speaker 6: something out. So now you've got all this collateral damage
- 2:38Speaker 6: and this is this is not good. Now they placed
- 2:42Speaker 6: him on pup JP right, saying that the ankle hasn't
- 2:45Speaker 6: healed whatever, So they've got four games to work this out,
- 2:48Speaker 6: and they're still paying him.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Because he's on pup.
- 2:51Speaker 6: So maybe that's some type of ointment on this open wound.
- 2:55Speaker 6: But the fact that we are here this is one
- 2:58Speaker 6: of the most in all my years of doing this,
- 3:01Speaker 6: all these contract disputes, this one.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Feels so personal. I don't know if it can be repaired.
- 3:08Speaker 2: And what has happened Steve, each and every time this
- 3:11Speaker 2: is escalated in terms of emotion, It's almost been every
- 3:14Speaker 2: time Jim Mersey has made a comment one way or
- 3:18Speaker 2: the other, whether it be via Twitter sorry X, which
- 3:22Speaker 2: it's called now, or speaking to reporters and saying something publicly.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Because what we do have to remember, and I've been
- 3:27Speaker 2: in that building over the last couple of years. You've
- 3:29Speaker 2: been in that building over the last couple of years.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Jonathan Taylor has been a model citizen in that locker room,
- 3:34Speaker 2: a very well liked player in that locker room, and
- 3:36Speaker 2: has gone about his business during his rookie deal. You
- 3:39Speaker 2: would assume watching other players get paid, and that's what
- 3:43Speaker 2: you're thinking when you're a star player, thinking they're going
- 3:46Speaker 2: to take care of you as a homegrown talent. You've
- 3:48Speaker 2: seen Quentin Nelson get paid. You've seen name Heines got
- 3:51Speaker 2: a second contract out of the backfield with him as well,
- 3:54Speaker 2: and Darius Leonard, and you're just waiting your time, and
- 3:56Speaker 2: now you're maybe the best player on this team, and
- 4:00Speaker 2: now you're told you're not getting an offer, any sort
- 4:02Speaker 2: of offer. And I think you have to remember he
- 4:05Speaker 2: was on a zoom call with Josh Jacobs, he was
- 4:08Speaker 2: on a zoom call with Saquon Barkley to go over
- 4:11Speaker 2: the state of where all of them stand in terms
- 4:13Speaker 2: of their position. I think this is a loss of trust,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and you're right, how do you repair a relationship where
- 4:20Speaker 2: you feel like the trust is lost? Because the crux
- 4:23Speaker 2: of all this is one major topic. They believe he
- 4:27Speaker 2: is not healthy enough to play like he played in
- 4:29Speaker 2: twenty twenty one, so they want to see him go
- 4:30Speaker 2: out and do it. He wants to get paid before
- 4:33Speaker 2: he risks injury going out and doing it. Where do
- 4:36Speaker 2: you find a middle ground in that position?
- 4:40Speaker 6: Yeah, and this is where it gets dicey because you
- 4:41Speaker 6: talked to posing coaches right now, they're like, I am
- 4:44Speaker 6: glad the cults are going through this because Jonathan Taylor's
- 4:46Speaker 6: a beast. You know, he's a top top three running
- 4:48Speaker 6: back in the NFL and a lot of guys of
- 4:51Speaker 6: opposing coaches so they're loving seeing this chaos.
- 4:54Speaker 5: But you know, you talk about a lack of trust.
- 4:56Speaker 5: And now we've got the.
- 4:57Speaker 6: Medical issue as well, JPE. Because let's say the four
- 5:00Speaker 6: games go, when the he comes off of pop, medical
- 5:04Speaker 6: staff says he's clear, he's medically cleared, he says, I
- 5:06Speaker 6: have my doctor who says I'm not okay. Then you
- 5:09Speaker 6: also bring the medical group in his collateral damage. It
- 5:12Speaker 6: gets real ugly, but we're gonna move on from this
- 5:15Speaker 6: because we've got another medical situation and potential contract situation
- 5:21Speaker 6: brewing in Cincinnati.
- 5:22Speaker 5: And for that j p Let's also bringing our Bridget.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Condon, who spent a couple of days up at training
- 5:27Speaker 6: camp in Cincinnati with the Bengals.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Bridget, you're coming in. We are talking about quarterback Joe.
- 5:33Speaker 6: Burrow shows up on the practice field on Tuesday, comes
- 5:36Speaker 6: out and practices Wednesday. Head co Zach Taylor says, it
- 5:40Speaker 6: doesn't look like he's missed any practice at all with
- 5:43Speaker 6: that calf.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Injury that kept him out.
- 5:45Speaker 6: What is the latest you can tell us about his
- 5:47Speaker 6: situation medically and then contractually.
- 5:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't think anyone was surprised to see Joe
- 5:54Speaker 7: Burrow on the practice field. You know, his head coach
- 5:57Speaker 7: saying he hasn't missed a beat, his teammates saying that
- 6:00Speaker 7: he brought an extra spark out to practice. When I
- 6:03Speaker 7: was up there, it was the first day we kind
- 6:04Speaker 7: of saw him in street clothes, he had that bucket hat,
- 6:06Speaker 7: just kind of watching practice and at that point you
- 6:09Speaker 7: kind of knew, Okay, he's gonna be ready for week
- 6:11Speaker 7: one now. To be out there the week before you
- 6:13Speaker 7: really get into focusing on week one. It seems like
- 6:17Speaker 7: the natural progression of that injury. I know there's a
- 6:20Speaker 7: lot of talk about has he been you know, kind
- 6:22Speaker 7: of maybe lingering a little bit because of that contract situation.
- 6:26Speaker 7: But I think there's a lot that we have to
- 6:28Speaker 7: dissect here with Joe Burrow, and I want you guys
- 6:31Speaker 7: to chime in here. But the best thing and maybe
- 6:34Speaker 7: even I don't know, more trendy than him being back
- 6:37Speaker 7: on the practice field. Did you guys see his Instagram
- 6:40Speaker 7: story of him in the lebron James Cass jersey and
- 6:44Speaker 7: it said, Okay, I don't know, are you guys familiar
- 6:46Speaker 7: with snapchat? I feel like maybe not.
- 6:49Speaker 5: That's all you.
- 6:53Speaker 7: So it's definitely a snapchat like you're it's definitely but
- 6:58Speaker 7: in high school. Come on, guys, it's definitely a Snapchat
- 7:01Speaker 7: mirror picture because you can just tell with the like
- 7:05Speaker 7: the graphic that says we're back or he's back.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It's definitely like an old picture.
- 7:11Speaker 7: But he posted it on his Instagram story to let
- 7:13Speaker 7: everybody know he's back. This is a guy that he's
- 7:17Speaker 7: a lot of fun to be around. His teammates like him.
- 7:19Speaker 7: He has that swagger that we always talk about. I
- 7:22Speaker 7: think there is no question in anybody's mind in the
- 7:27Speaker 7: building that a deal is going to get done before
- 7:31Speaker 7: the season starts.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It's just when.
- 7:33Speaker 7: And I think, you know, we could come down today,
- 7:34Speaker 7: it could come down tomorrow. I think everybody's kind of
- 7:37Speaker 7: on the edge of their seat. We also have to remember,
- 7:39Speaker 7: the same agent that's doing his deal is the one
- 7:41Speaker 7: doing Nick Bosas, So a busy next two weeks for
- 7:45Speaker 7: you know, both of them.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I think we're seeing bridget Honestly, this seems just by
- 7:53Speaker 2: watching it go down from when in the spring Joe
- 7:55Speaker 2: Burrows talking about I think I've made it abundantly clear
- 7:57Speaker 2: what I think I'm worth and what i think I'm
- 8:01Speaker 2: worth getting. It's been pretty amicable. I do think both
- 8:04Speaker 2: sides are very tough in terms of negotiations. The Brangles
- 8:07Speaker 2: have never been pushed over Steve over the years by
- 8:09Speaker 2: any stretch. But I'm curious on how this contract is
- 8:12Speaker 2: going to be structured, because really, if you think about it,
- 8:16Speaker 2: it's Patrick Mahomes and the next best player we all
- 8:18Speaker 2: say is Joe Burrow. I think the gap is probably
- 8:21Speaker 2: closer than maybe some other people believe. How does he
- 8:24Speaker 2: structure this contract? How creative. Are they maybe having to
- 8:27Speaker 2: be steve during this contract negotiations if Joe Burrow, who
- 8:31Speaker 2: has made it clear he wants to keep this group
- 8:33Speaker 2: together the same way Mahomes has said he wants to
- 8:36Speaker 2: be able to structure his contract to where he can
- 8:38Speaker 2: keep a lot of talent around him. You have one
- 8:41Speaker 2: of your top receivers and t Higgins that has also
- 8:43Speaker 2: due a new deal. Jamar Chase is already on the
- 8:46Speaker 2: horizon in a sense, and that's just the guys he
- 8:48Speaker 2: throws the football to. There's a lot of other positions
- 8:51Speaker 2: and positions you have to pay. How do you think
- 8:54Speaker 2: Joe Burrow structures this contract because I do think he
- 8:57Speaker 2: looks at success similarly to Pat Mahomes. I think this
- 9:01Speaker 2: will be a record breaking deal, but I do think
- 9:03Speaker 2: there's some creativity that's going on behind closed doors.
- 9:05Speaker 6: Right And you nailed JP and he said, I think
- 9:08Speaker 6: he looks at success the same way. That's why he's
- 9:09Speaker 6: out there on that practice field right now. And you
- 9:12Speaker 6: know there was video of him. He's not wearing a
- 9:13Speaker 6: sleeve or anything on that calf. He's wearing like everything
- 9:16Speaker 6: is good to go. So he's a football player. He
- 9:18Speaker 6: wants to be out there competing with his teammates. But
- 9:21Speaker 6: the structure is important. And to your point about Mahomes,
- 9:25Speaker 6: he didn't take a ton of cash over the first
- 9:27Speaker 6: three years. You have a lot of people saying, what
- 9:29Speaker 6: is this guy doing to backload a deal like this
- 9:32Speaker 6: in case he gets hurt. There is a potential trust issue.
- 9:36Speaker 6: There's a potential renegotiation there for Mahomes. But let's look
- 9:39Speaker 6: at how the market is laid out this offseason. Lamar
- 9:42Speaker 6: Jackson five years two hundred and sixty million, Jalen Hurts
- 9:45Speaker 6: five years, two hundred and fifty five million, Justin Herbert
- 9:47Speaker 6: five years two hundred and sixty two million with a
- 9:50Speaker 6: no trade clause. Right, So these are the parameters to
- 9:53Speaker 6: get a deal done. So you're gonna see the yearly
- 9:55Speaker 6: average and everything be similar to those three. It is
- 9:58Speaker 6: going to be the structure to see if they can
- 9:59Speaker 6: keep the team together. But Bridge, I want to get
- 10:02Speaker 6: back to you. You know you heard me say that
- 10:04Speaker 6: Joey b didn't have the sleeve on. He's out there
- 10:07Speaker 6: wanting to play football. The risk of stepping out on
- 10:10Speaker 6: that field and reaggravating that thing. Do you think there's
- 10:13Speaker 6: a bond enough with that organization which has been tight
- 10:17Speaker 6: with money up probably too the last five years in
- 10:20Speaker 6: Joe Burrow to take care of him even if he
- 10:24Speaker 6: does get hurt before a contract is finalized.
- 10:28Speaker 7: Well, I think we have to remember I think today too,
- 10:31Speaker 7: he just participated in individual drills, right, I don't think
- 10:33Speaker 7: we're going to see him doing a lot of team drills.
- 10:36Speaker 7: And whether that's the natural progression of the injury or
- 10:39Speaker 7: he's thinking contract in his mind, no one's really going
- 10:41Speaker 7: to know. But I do think you're getting down to
- 10:43Speaker 7: that period like you mentioned, But in my eyes, there's
- 10:47Speaker 7: no way that this organization doesn't pay Joe Burrow. Yes,
- 10:50Speaker 7: there's been issues in the past, but this is a
- 10:52Speaker 7: guy who's coming in and he's going to be the
- 10:55Speaker 7: one to get you to it. He's already gotten you
- 10:57Speaker 7: to a Super Bowl, but hopefully help you win that
- 10:59Speaker 7: first super He's mentioned you know that window being his
- 11:03Speaker 7: entire career. This is the face of your franchise, and
- 11:05Speaker 7: I think he's proven. He's had injuries, right, this is
- 11:08Speaker 7: his fourth consecutive off season where he hasn't participated in
- 11:12Speaker 7: the entire chunk of it and still has found success.
- 11:16Speaker 7: So depending upon the injury I think regardless, this is
- 11:20Speaker 7: the guy that you want to pay. This is the
- 11:21Speaker 7: guy you want as the face of your franchise. Hopefully
- 11:25Speaker 7: figure it out so that you know, for Joe Burrow's sake,
- 11:27Speaker 7: he gets the money and then can worry a little
- 11:30Speaker 7: bit less if something unfortunate were to happen.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Bo great stuff, really really good points quick.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I'll say this, The Bengals are not going to put
- 11:37Speaker 2: him out there making less money.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Sure, sure you know you don't think they're gonna make.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Him available less money than arch Manning. Don't.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Don't you don't think we're gonna have a job in
- 11:45Speaker 5: the Taylor situation. Cincinnati. Hey, really good stuff. Good because
- 11:50Speaker 5: our bridget sit tight. We're gonna come back to you.
- 11:51Speaker 6: We're also gonna be joined a little bit later by
- 11:53Speaker 6: Omar Ruish and Alonzo Heismith. But today is also a
- 11:57Speaker 6: very sad day. James is one of the NFL great
- 12:00Speaker 6: Gil Brandt personnel scouting legend to the point where the
- 12:04Speaker 6: NFL would not be where it is today. I'm going
- 12:06Speaker 6: to say this personally and professionally without Gil Brandt. He
- 12:10Speaker 6: passed today at the age of ninety one. Now, the
- 12:13Speaker 6: long term Cowboys executive who was there for the inception
- 12:17Speaker 6: of the franchise up until nineteen eighty nine when he
- 12:19Speaker 6: was let go when Jerry Jones bought the team. He
- 12:23Speaker 6: was somebody who had an incredible eye for talent. He
- 12:27Speaker 6: brought computers into the game. He was the grandfather to
- 12:30Speaker 6: what now is the actual NFL Combine.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Gil went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in
- 12:36Speaker 5: twenty nineteen. He worked here at NFL dot Com. He
- 12:39Speaker 5: was here when I started in two thousand and eight.
- 12:42Speaker 5: He helped me tremendously.
- 12:44Speaker 6: My great respect for Gil Brandt comes because of his.
- 12:50Speaker 5: Professionalism, his attention.
- 12:52Speaker 6: To detail, to historically black colleges and university. He stacked
- 12:56Speaker 6: the rosters for the Cowboys, a lot of small school
- 12:59Speaker 6: players in HBUs. He was on the Black College Football
- 13:02Speaker 6: Hall of Fame selection committee with me.
- 13:04Speaker 5: I need somebody near and dear to all of us
- 13:08Speaker 5: rest in peace.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Skill.
- 13:13Speaker 5: You know he knows what he did on the field,
- 13:15Speaker 5: He knows how valuable a player he is, and he
- 13:18Speaker 5: knows he'll be he'll be compensated for it. So I
- 13:20Speaker 5: don't think he has.
- 13:21Speaker 4: A way in his mind.
- 13:23Speaker 1: We have to strike the right mix of urgency. I
- 13:26Speaker 1: don't like this.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I don't like not having one of our best players here.
- 13:29Speaker 2: We've got a really good track record that I'm proud
- 13:31Speaker 2: of as a group of having our players in frustration.
- 13:38Speaker 8: No, it's going pretty much exactly how I expected it
- 13:41Speaker 8: to go.
- 13:41Speaker 5: That's so now it's kind of just been exactly what
- 13:46Speaker 5: I thought.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Long.
- 13:49Speaker 5: Yeah, i'd a feeling it would.
- 13:50Speaker 9: You can imagine this team not having him on the
- 13:52Speaker 9: team saying that if this thing goes on in the previous.
- 13:56Speaker 8: Season, Yeah, I can imagine anything. Doesn't mean I like
- 13:59Speaker 8: that picture, of course. Now, you guys know how we
- 14:03Speaker 8: feel about Nick, and we all know how good of
- 14:05Speaker 8: a player he is, so hopefully we can come to
- 14:08Speaker 8: terms soon and get him here asa as possible.
- 14:10Speaker 2: This is the guy that addresses our team every Saturday
- 14:13Speaker 2: and just gives his wisdom.
- 14:15Speaker 1: We miss him and looking forward to the day he's
- 14:18Speaker 1: coming back.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I just want to sack the quarterback, dude.
- 14:25Speaker 1: All right, welcome back.
- 14:26Speaker 2: That was Eric Armstead, John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan, all members
- 14:29Speaker 2: of the forty nine ers talking about you know who,
- 14:32Speaker 2: Nick Bosa, who just wants to sack the quarterback dude.
- 14:34Speaker 2: I'm excited to hear Omar Rowiz drop a couple of
- 14:38Speaker 2: dudes in here. When's this dude showing up? And when's
- 14:41Speaker 2: this contract getting done with this dude?
- 14:43Speaker 9: Omar Well to borrow from Nick Bosa's sack dance celebration.
- 14:50Speaker 9: I don't know, Nick, And this contract negotiation dragging on
- 14:56Speaker 9: even longer than John Lynch expected. He acknowledged that yesterday
- 15:00Speaker 9: press conference. When I spoke with Lynch at the very
- 15:02Speaker 9: beginning of training camp, he indicated to me he knew
- 15:05Speaker 9: it was going to be a tough negotiation with Nick
- 15:08Speaker 9: Bosa and his representatives, but it has gone on longer
- 15:12Speaker 9: than he thought. Kyle Shanahan meanwhile saying, this is about
- 15:15Speaker 9: the window that he'd thought they'd reach a negotiation. But
- 15:19Speaker 9: I go back to twenty seventeen, Steve, you probably remember
- 15:21Speaker 9: this Aaron Donald showing up maybe the friday before Week one.
- 15:26Speaker 9: He didn't play in that opening game with the Sean
- 15:28Speaker 9: McVay era in Indianapolis, and they blew the Colts out,
- 15:32Speaker 9: and then he goes on to win the Defensive Player
- 15:34Speaker 9: of the Year his first. Now Nick Bosa, the reigning
- 15:37Speaker 9: Defensive Player of the Year, comes in. I still don't
- 15:41Speaker 9: get a sense from the forty nine ers that he's
- 15:44Speaker 9: not going to be there eventually, that this will eventually
- 15:47Speaker 9: get done. But obviously, in John Lynch's eyes, this has
- 15:51Speaker 9: gone on longer and he thought it would.
- 15:52Speaker 6: Take Yeah, oh, I will tell you this, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 6: judging by the tone, like we played a clip of
- 15:57Speaker 6: Kyle Shanahan a week ago and then yesterday, there seems
- 16:01Speaker 6: to be a little little bit of consternation in the tone.
- 16:05Speaker 5: But I'll also say this, and this is just years
- 16:07Speaker 5: of experience.
- 16:08Speaker 6: I'm dealing with a lot of these types of contract situations.
- 16:11Speaker 6: When you hear teams say like, hopefully we can get
- 16:14Speaker 6: this done in the next couple of days, that process
- 16:17Speaker 6: tends to be sped up to like, yeah, it's probably
- 16:19Speaker 6: gonna get done the next couple of hours now. And now,
- 16:21Speaker 6: maybe I'm just being this or that, but you know
- 16:25Speaker 6: I heard that, you know this year in training camp
- 16:27Speaker 6: with the Vikings with Daniel Hunter. Oh yeah, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 6: maybe I think we'll get it done in the next
- 16:30Speaker 6: couple of weeks. The next day it was done. So
- 16:33Speaker 6: when you start hearing things like that, there tends to
- 16:35Speaker 6: be an accelerated clock. But here's maybe the potential. I
- 16:38Speaker 6: won't say, hang up, but let's look at the market.
- 16:40Speaker 5: TJ.
- 16:41Speaker 6: Watt twenty eight mil per year, eighty fully guaranteed, Joey
- 16:45Speaker 6: Bosa twenty seven million year, seventy eight fully guaranteed, Miles
- 16:51Speaker 6: Garrett twenty five year, but just fifty million guaranteed. The
- 16:56Speaker 6: guaranteed money is going to probably be the issue here
- 16:59Speaker 6: when you look at eight he fully guaranteed. That's the
- 17:02Speaker 6: money he's gonna get whatever that that's.
- 17:05Speaker 5: Always the number.
- 17:06Speaker 6: And you and you look at the Niners, They're they're
- 17:08Speaker 6: putting their money on defense. But Eric Arms did Fred Warner.
- 17:11Speaker 6: They just signed jon Hardgrave a big contract, so you
- 17:18Speaker 6: know this is where they are going to put their money,
- 17:20Speaker 6: knowing that Nick Bosha is the dude who really is
- 17:25Speaker 6: the best out of all of them. But now it's
- 17:27Speaker 6: just a matter of how that's gonna come and what
- 17:28Speaker 6: that might do to guys on the other side of
- 17:31Speaker 6: the ball in the coming years. But there still isn't
- 17:33Speaker 6: that to me financially, the fact that you've got a
- 17:36Speaker 6: rookie quarterback on a seventh round contract, you still have
- 17:39Speaker 6: a lot more wiggle room than other teams do JP
- 17:42Speaker 6: And the fact also you're hearing the way that Lynch
- 17:45Speaker 6: and Kyle Shanahan talked about this.
- 17:47Speaker 5: They're not saying, oh, this sucks. They're keeping a.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Good line of communication open to the player and negotiations.
- 17:57Speaker 2: And that's the way they they have take care of
- 18:00Speaker 2: their homegrown guys.
- 18:01Speaker 1: They've done it.
- 18:02Speaker 2: They've taken care of guys like Deebo Samuel, They've taken
- 18:04Speaker 2: care of other guys in the past.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I think a couple of quick points on this before
- 18:08Speaker 1: we move on. Omar.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Sorry to cut you off, but I gotta jump in.
- 18:10Speaker 2: I gotta say this, listen, They're not trading him. Both
- 18:13Speaker 2: John Lynch and Kyle Shannon were asked, you know, would
- 18:16Speaker 2: you trade Joe?
- 18:16Speaker 1: Would you trade Nick Bosa? No, that's not happening.
- 18:18Speaker 2: He's the best defensive player in money people's minds in
- 18:21Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 18:22Speaker 1: You mentioned Steve TJ.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Watts deal at twenty eight million dollars a year, you
- 18:25Speaker 2: would think coming off of a defensive Player of the
- 18:28Speaker 2: Year award and eighteen and a half sacks that Nick
- 18:31Speaker 2: Bosa with two years also of inflation off of that contract,
- 18:35Speaker 2: this is probably a thirty million dollars a year situation
- 18:38Speaker 2: where this contract is going. Now, what we do need
- 18:41Speaker 2: to keep an eye on because I do think a
- 18:42Speaker 2: deal gets done before the start of the season. Is
- 18:44Speaker 2: he ready for Week one? John Lynch believes usually, universally
- 18:48Speaker 2: it takes about three weeks for a player to get
- 18:50Speaker 2: ready to play in an NFL game. But he also
- 18:52Speaker 2: acknowledged that Nick Bosa is not a normal human being
- 18:55Speaker 2: in terms of how he's built, how he works out.
- 18:57Speaker 2: That is going to be the thing we keep our
- 18:59Speaker 2: eye on once he reports, is how quickly he gets
- 19:01Speaker 2: up to speak, because the forty nine ers believe it'll
- 19:03Speaker 2: be much quicker than a lot of other players around
- 19:06Speaker 2: the league or a lot of other players they've dealt
- 19:07Speaker 2: with in the past. Let's talk to another guy that
- 19:09Speaker 2: is not in camp, and that is the Kansas City
- 19:12Speaker 2: Chiefs Chris Jones, who is doing a holdout. To really
- 19:17Speaker 2: describe all holdouts, his situation also is different than Nick
- 19:20Speaker 2: Boss because Nix is coming off of that rookie contract
- 19:23Speaker 2: and Chris Jones is coming off of his second contract Steve,
- 19:25Speaker 2: So that is a situation where he's getting fined regularly.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Omar about one point eight million dollars already missed. And
- 19:31Speaker 2: what I've been told is it's not like the Chiefs
- 19:34Speaker 2: are upset with Chris Jones. They're just kind of scratching
- 19:37Speaker 2: their head, going, I'm not sure what's going on here.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Why didn't you just have a hold in. Why didn't
- 19:42Speaker 2: you just show up and not participate. They're kind of
- 19:45Speaker 2: just confused by the situation more so than they're angry,
- 19:49Speaker 2: which is very interesting.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Yeah, look, I mean it is interesting. But let's piggyback
- 19:54Speaker 5: off of the previous conversation. Chris Jones the last two
- 19:57Speaker 5: years has primarily played on the edge.
- 19:58Speaker 6: Correct Poe's Nick Bosa comes in in thirty million a year.
- 20:03Speaker 5: Now the Chiefs are like, holy hell, we're not gonna
- 20:06Speaker 5: pay this. He's the best offensive line.
- 20:08Speaker 6: But you know, is the interior where Aaron Donald's making
- 20:11Speaker 6: thirty one million dollars this year?
- 20:14Speaker 5: You know?
- 20:14Speaker 6: Or is he the edge guy thirty million a year?
- 20:17Speaker 6: This could really to me, this Bosa deal might throw
- 20:20Speaker 6: another wrinkle.
- 20:21Speaker 5: It's Chris Jones holdout Omar Well.
- 20:24Speaker 9: I think I think you guys both in both both
- 20:27Speaker 9: these conversations kind of hit it on the head. Whereas
- 20:30Speaker 9: Nick Bosa needs to be on the forty nine ers
- 20:33Speaker 9: for them to be true Super Bowl contenders. And I
- 20:35Speaker 9: think it's the same thing with Chris Jones as good
- 20:37Speaker 9: as Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. Are Chris Jones the
- 20:40Speaker 9: centerpiece of that defense, making them a super Bowl caliber
- 20:44Speaker 9: championship defense. And I think his representatives know that, just
- 20:47Speaker 9: like you said, Steve seventh round quarterback, rookie quarterback going
- 20:51Speaker 9: into the second year with the forty nine ers, Nick
- 20:54Speaker 9: Bosa's agents know that as well, just like Chris Jones's
- 20:57Speaker 9: agents know that. You know, he is needed in the
- 21:01Speaker 9: middle of that Chiefs defense, and you know, if this
- 21:04Speaker 9: is what they have to deal with the start this season,
- 21:06Speaker 9: it's gonna be things like this. I think that might
- 21:09Speaker 9: you know, that could derail the Chiefs. I think I
- 21:11Speaker 9: think we're all bullish on Kansas City this year. I
- 21:14Speaker 9: mean I know personally, I feel as strongly about them
- 21:16Speaker 9: repeating this year as any team since I've been covering
- 21:20Speaker 9: the NFL. When you go back to looking how Mahomes
- 21:23Speaker 9: adjusted to the new look receiving cores and then you
- 21:25Speaker 9: had the six rookies playing significant snaps on defense last
- 21:28Speaker 9: year and they're only going to grow. But at the
- 21:31Speaker 9: center of it all is Chris Jones, and I think,
- 21:33Speaker 9: you know, it's a matter of time before he gets
- 21:35Speaker 9: in but yeah, little Sweaty in Santa Clair in Kansas
- 21:40Speaker 9: City right now.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Gotta like it.
- 21:41Speaker 6: Man to two two likely Super Bowl contenders, I gets
- 21:44Speaker 6: their best defensive lineman in there. Guys, we're gonna button
- 21:46Speaker 6: this up right now because our special guest.
- 21:49Speaker 5: Is waiting on hold.
- 21:51Speaker 6: Remember, guys, we are two days away from rosters being
- 21:54Speaker 6: cut to the fifty three practice squads being made, guys
- 21:57Speaker 6: getting stashed, teams only keeping one quarterback on the ad
- 22:00Speaker 6: active roster. Coming up next, Alonzo Heighsmith is going to
- 22:03Speaker 6: tell us how the rosters as made. Alright back at
- 22:14Speaker 6: the NFL reports the White Cheer James Palmer. Now we're
- 22:16Speaker 6: joined by our special guest, Alonzo high Smith, the number
- 22:20Speaker 6: three overall pick the Houston Oilers in nineteen eighty seven,
- 22:22Speaker 6: long time NFL personnel exec and now the general manager
- 22:28Speaker 6: of the University of Miami football team.
- 22:31Speaker 5: Soh thanks so much for joining us.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Man, Hey, thank you for being on and enjoy watching
- 22:36Speaker 4: you guys every day on television. So it's probably one
- 22:40Speaker 4: of the things I really enjoyed the most being in
- 22:42Speaker 4: college football is having an opportunity to sit back and
- 22:45Speaker 4: watch the whole NFL listening to your stories, reports on
- 22:48Speaker 4: what's going on around the league, and I'm not too
- 22:51Speaker 4: far removed from the league, so I understand a lot
- 22:54Speaker 4: of the things that are going on.
- 22:55Speaker 6: That's why we have you here though, That's why we
- 22:57Speaker 6: have you here for first off, general manager of a
- 23:00Speaker 6: collegiate program.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Like, what is that? That seems like a very interesting title.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Well, I think mine's is really a unique situation. Having
- 23:10Speaker 4: played at University of Miami, understanding the city of Miami,
- 23:14Speaker 4: understanding the culture. I wouldn't say there's a real GM
- 23:19Speaker 4: in college football because that's the head coach. The head coaches,
- 23:24Speaker 4: you know, he basically runs the program the way he
- 23:27Speaker 4: wants to run, and all you're trying to do is
- 23:30Speaker 4: is be an ear for him. One of the greatest
- 23:33Speaker 4: things I really enjoyed doing is talking to the players.
- 23:37Speaker 4: You know, I have such a different perspective of college
- 23:40Speaker 4: football being in it now, for athletes and understanding what
- 23:44Speaker 4: they go through to play college football. It's much different
- 23:49Speaker 4: than when I played college football. Social media, time consumption,
- 23:54Speaker 4: there's so many things that involved compared to when I played.
- 23:59Speaker 4: You know, I have a real appreciation for these kids
- 24:03Speaker 4: and understanding where they're trying to get to and I
- 24:07Speaker 4: try and use my knowledge of being where they want
- 24:10Speaker 4: to go to give them good advice. And you know,
- 24:13Speaker 4: I enjoy when they come in my room. And you know,
- 24:16Speaker 4: we've got some young running backs and they came in
- 24:18Speaker 4: my room and they were talking about football, and I said, hey,
- 24:20Speaker 4: let's put up some great backs on YouTube and watch
- 24:23Speaker 4: and just and to sit there and watch them. I
- 24:27Speaker 4: put up Nick Schubb, of.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Course, who drafted.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Brandon Brandon, Brandon Jacobs and some other backs. So just
- 24:39Speaker 4: getting them to understand the expectations and where their dreams
- 24:44Speaker 4: want to go. These these this is the process you're
- 24:47Speaker 4: going to have to follow. So that's one of the
- 24:49Speaker 4: things I really enjoy about being back at University of Miami.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Well, listen, I want to talk about these teams that
- 24:55Speaker 2: you used to be with Elizawa and the Packers, the Browns,
- 24:58Speaker 2: the Seahawks. What was the process during the week in
- 25:03Speaker 2: the years past that we just went through in the
- 25:05Speaker 2: NFL in terms of cutdown? What was the preparation Because
- 25:08Speaker 2: I'm curious. Everybody knows what's going on in usually in
- 25:11Speaker 2: your own building, but when you're looking at the thirty
- 25:14Speaker 2: one other teams, what is the process that would go
- 25:16Speaker 2: into that and making sure you were prepared to steal
- 25:19Speaker 2: somebody from somebody else's squad.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Well, I think it all boils down basically to the
- 25:26Speaker 4: foundation of your organization. At the Cleveland I'm sorry, at
- 25:30Speaker 4: the Green Bay Packers, in the Seattle Seahawks, it's about
- 25:34Speaker 4: building through the draft. It's about young players. And Ted
- 25:39Speaker 4: Thompson and Ron Wolf were really big on the back
- 25:43Speaker 4: end of roster. You're always trying to improve the back
- 25:46Speaker 4: end of the roster with young, more talented players, and
- 25:50Speaker 4: you know, and that's one of the things we really
- 25:53Speaker 4: concentrated on because we weren't a team that was going
- 25:55Speaker 4: to go out and sign the twenty million dollars corner
- 25:59Speaker 4: or that big defensive end. So it was about drafting
- 26:03Speaker 4: precisely for your team and understanding the league and what's
- 26:06Speaker 4: out there. So when these cutdown days come out, with
- 26:10Speaker 4: your scouts involved, all your player personnel people involved, you're
- 26:15Speaker 4: scouring through the NFL on cutdown day to find that
- 26:20Speaker 4: one diamond, to find some guys who can improve the
- 26:23Speaker 4: back end of your roster.
- 26:25Speaker 6: So, you know, when I look at you know some
- 26:27Speaker 6: things that happened in the NFL joint practices is one Zoe.
- 26:30Speaker 6: And you know, a lot of coaches love the joint
- 26:32Speaker 6: practice controlled environment. But when I go to joint practices,
- 26:35Speaker 6: I see personnel guys looking at every other team's individual
- 26:39Speaker 6: drills all that person like, how much of these joint
- 26:42Speaker 6: practices factor and to you guys getting a good read
- 26:44Speaker 6: on talent, like, hey, if this corner becomes available, really
- 26:47Speaker 6: want to go get him, or we really like this
- 26:49Speaker 6: guy here, or they may want to stash one of
- 26:51Speaker 6: our guys because they're looking at our guys just like
- 26:53Speaker 6: we're looking at theirs.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's a huge factor because when you're have
- 26:58Speaker 4: an opportunity to see the other team up in personal
- 27:01Speaker 4: you're able to dig back into your college reports on
- 27:04Speaker 4: players and you know what, maybe you don't get that
- 27:06Speaker 4: player now, Maybe you get him in a trade six
- 27:10Speaker 4: months later. Maybe you get him in a trade in
- 27:13Speaker 4: the off season where they release him in the off season.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Maybe you get that player in his second contract. You
- 27:20Speaker 4: had an opportunity to really watch them, your scouts really
- 27:23Speaker 4: liked them in college, but because of the draft, you
- 27:25Speaker 4: weren't able to get them. So you can use those
- 27:28Speaker 4: joint practices in many ways to benefit your team. You know,
- 27:32Speaker 4: there could be a kid that you think you're looking
- 27:34Speaker 4: at that you're looking at their depth chart and you
- 27:37Speaker 4: know there's five dbs that are going to make their
- 27:39Speaker 4: team based on what you're watching. There's this kid we
- 27:43Speaker 4: really liked in college, and we might have had a
- 27:46Speaker 4: fifth round grade on him, a sixth round grade on
- 27:48Speaker 4: and he doesn't get drafted. Well, he's a free agent
- 27:51Speaker 4: for that team. So you're thinking in your mind, oh, man,
- 27:55Speaker 4: I really like this kid and we liked them as
- 27:57Speaker 4: a group as an organization, we're getting ready for the draft.
- 28:01Speaker 4: We didn't have the fifth or sixth round pick. If
- 28:04Speaker 4: they released this kid, we're going to immediately jump on him.
- 28:07Speaker 4: And that's why you get scouts involved. You go back
- 28:11Speaker 4: to what you saw in college when you're looking at
- 28:14Speaker 4: young players. So there's an opportunity for you to make
- 28:17Speaker 4: your team better at proving the back end of the roster.
- 28:20Speaker 6: Joe Quickly's a guy like Tremont Williams like that because
- 28:22Speaker 6: I think he was a six round pick for Houston.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Got let go, you guys have him and turn him
- 28:25Speaker 5: too a Pro Bowl corner.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Well, the thing about Tremone was I loved him in college.
- 28:30Speaker 4: I had a good grade on him. I think we
- 28:33Speaker 4: liked him as an organization, but those things happened weren't.
- 28:36Speaker 4: We didn't draft him, and he went through the circuit
- 28:39Speaker 4: after the draft. After the draft, he didn't get signed
- 28:41Speaker 4: by anybody. He was hanging out and we had an
- 28:43Speaker 4: opportunity because of our grades from college to bring him
- 28:47Speaker 4: in and worked out. We put him on a practice squad,
- 28:49Speaker 4: and the rest is history. The same thing can be
- 28:51Speaker 4: said about Sam Shields. The same thing can be said
- 28:54Speaker 4: about Chris Banjo. These type of kids who who we liked.
- 28:58Speaker 4: They had the athletic trace that had he They had
- 29:00Speaker 4: all those sorts of things, and then there on the street,
- 29:03Speaker 4: you have an opportunity to sign these guys and they
- 29:05Speaker 4: become valuable members of your team.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Well, I'm always curious about this, and as opposed to
- 29:10Speaker 2: getting somebody from another team, how about the process? We
- 29:14Speaker 2: always talk about it, but I'm curious how it happens
- 29:16Speaker 2: hiding a guy on your team essentially, you know what
- 29:19Speaker 2: I mean, like where you don't want to see him
- 29:21Speaker 2: play in the preseason for the rest of the league
- 29:23Speaker 2: to see him, so you can put him on your
- 29:24Speaker 2: practice But give me exactly how that process happens. And
- 29:28Speaker 2: how an organization goes about maybe a guy hiding him
- 29:31Speaker 2: that they want to develop.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Well, first of all, it's really hard to hide somebody
- 29:36Speaker 4: because of the information out there, Like all thirty one
- 29:39Speaker 4: teams have the same information we have about that player.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Is probably more of a based on a perception on
- 29:45Speaker 4: how you see that player and how you see how
- 29:48Speaker 4: he fits on your team, and those sorts of things,
- 29:51Speaker 4: and how all the other teams see that player. Maybe
- 29:54Speaker 4: he gets hurt in the preseason and he only plays
- 29:57Speaker 4: one game. Well, as a team, looking at your team,
- 30:02Speaker 4: you go, well, they're gonna try and sneak this guy
- 30:05Speaker 4: on the practice squad, and it's really hard to pull
- 30:08Speaker 4: players from another team's practice squad once those practice squads
- 30:11Speaker 4: are set, So you may wait for him to get
- 30:15Speaker 4: released and boom, you jump on him, Michael Hawk, and
- 30:18Speaker 4: now he's your property. So you know, those are the
- 30:21Speaker 4: things that go into players. I can think of a
- 30:24Speaker 4: player every year I thought was gonna get cut at
- 30:28Speaker 4: at the Minnesota Vikings, Adam Thielen. I really liked him.
- 30:31Speaker 4: He was came from a small school and watching tape,
- 30:34Speaker 4: watching their scrimmages, I mean, watching their preseason games and
- 30:39Speaker 4: things like that, and I go, man, when they cut
- 30:40Speaker 4: this guy, we're gonna jump on him. Well lo and behold,
- 30:44Speaker 4: he never gets cut. He becomes who he is in
- 30:46Speaker 4: the league. And those things go on every day. You
- 30:50Speaker 4: have to remember in the personnel apartment, everyone's responsible for teams.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Everybody's writing reports about all the practice squad players. So
- 30:59Speaker 4: when the cutdown days it does come, you're prepared for.
- 31:02Speaker 4: You know all these players, your scouts know these players.
- 31:05Speaker 4: When I was in Green Bay, Reggie McKenzie would call
- 31:08Speaker 4: me a Ron Woolford, Ted Thompson would call me a
- 31:10Speaker 4: Byt a player. After cut down, they say you really
- 31:13Speaker 4: like this kid in college, And I'm like, yeah, I
- 31:15Speaker 4: really did like them. We should grab them, you know.
- 31:18Speaker 4: And and that's how that and that's how those relations start,
- 31:22Speaker 4: all right.
- 31:22Speaker 6: So we're gonna ask you to sit tight for just
- 31:23Speaker 6: a second, ago a quick break, and you're gonna come back.
- 31:26Speaker 6: We got a lot more of Alonzo Highsmith. Plus later
- 31:29Speaker 6: in the show, is Matthew Stafford and some of these
- 31:32Speaker 6: other quarterbacks are they too old to relate to some
- 31:35Speaker 6: of these.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Young wide receivers. What more on the NFL report, We come.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Back teach them a Lesson, Steve, Welcome back to the
- 31:48Speaker 2: NFL Report. We're with Alonzo Highsmith, the general manager of
- 31:53Speaker 2: the Miami Hurricanes, and we grilled you about all your
- 31:56Speaker 2: time as a personnel executive, Alonso, and and I'm curious
- 32:00Speaker 2: also when you're in the building every day, there's obviously
- 32:05Speaker 2: some hurt feelings between player and team when it comes
- 32:08Speaker 2: to contracts, when it comes to you know, not getting
- 32:11Speaker 2: the money they feel like they deserve. I know you're
- 32:13Speaker 2: following love the rest of us, this Jonathan Taylor situation.
- 32:17Speaker 2: How does one try to repair a relationship and move
- 32:21Speaker 2: forward when things become as public like they are in
- 32:25Speaker 2: Indianapolis right now.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Well, if it's all about money, I think it can
- 32:30Speaker 4: be repaired. Money has a way of curing a lot
- 32:34Speaker 4: of apples, and we all know that. I think the
- 32:39Speaker 4: problems become when it becomes personal, when there's attacks on
- 32:42Speaker 4: both sides to each other. That's when the relationship kind
- 32:46Speaker 4: of goes to sour and it's irreparable. So, you know,
- 32:51Speaker 4: I'm just hoping in his situation because he's a great talent.
- 32:54Speaker 4: It's unfortunate what people think about running backs these days,
- 32:57Speaker 4: the value of running backs. But I think this guy, especially,
- 33:01Speaker 4: he's a difference maker. The Colts are a better team
- 33:04Speaker 4: with him than without him. And I'm hoping if it
- 33:07Speaker 4: just comes to money, they finally say, you know what,
- 33:10Speaker 4: let's just pay the guy what he's worth, and I
- 33:13Speaker 4: think everyone will be happy at the end of the day.
- 33:15Speaker 6: So you're number three overall. Pick you were you were
- 33:17Speaker 6: a running back come out of college. Let's let's let's
- 33:19Speaker 6: hit on this. You talked early in the show about
- 33:21Speaker 6: young players coming to seek advice from me. You're you're
- 33:23Speaker 6: telling about running backs. Has anybody said, should I continue
- 33:27Speaker 6: playing this position because it's not no longer a big
- 33:29Speaker 6: money position in the NFL?
- 33:31Speaker 4: Well, you know what I thought about that, honestly, And
- 33:35Speaker 4: you know, in today's football, if I was a six '
- 33:38Speaker 4: to one, two and thirty five pounds kid that played
- 33:41Speaker 4: running back and linebacker, I'd probably stick to linebacker. I
- 33:50Speaker 4: longevity the perception of the position, you know, I think
- 33:57Speaker 4: you know, when people look at the running back position today,
- 34:01Speaker 4: they look at the teams that are winning Super Bowls,
- 34:03Speaker 4: they say, well, they didn't have a great running back,
- 34:05Speaker 4: and then you see guys get hurt. The running back
- 34:07Speaker 4: position doesn't last very long. So if I'm a young kid,
- 34:13Speaker 4: I may make that move. I think there's a perfect
- 34:15Speaker 4: example of that. DJ Williams won the number one recruited
- 34:19Speaker 4: kids in the nation at the University of Miami his
- 34:21Speaker 4: first year. They moved in the running back and then
- 34:23Speaker 4: he switched back to the linebacker and the rest is history.
- 34:26Speaker 4: You know, he's a first round draft pick Denver, Broncos
- 34:29Speaker 4: and all that kind of stuff. So, you know what,
- 34:31Speaker 4: that is something to think about, and I've often thought
- 34:34Speaker 4: about that.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Well, Eliza, everybody wants to play quarterback because we're talking
- 34:40Speaker 2: about getting paid. That's where That's where you get paid,
- 34:42Speaker 2: is playing quarterback in the NFL. But we're seeing just
- 34:46Speaker 2: now in San Francisco a huge swing and a miss. Essentially,
- 34:50Speaker 2: it seems right now. I know it's early and it's
- 34:51Speaker 2: a small sample size with Trey Lance, but what is
- 34:54Speaker 2: it that makes evaluating the quarterback position so difficult?
- 34:59Speaker 1: I've seen you at a.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Number of We've talked of what comes into evaluating quarterbacks
- 35:04Speaker 2: and why is it so hard?
- 35:06Speaker 4: You know what, never has one position determine the fate
- 35:11Speaker 4: of so many men, that quarterback position. I think quarterback
- 35:15Speaker 4: is the hardest position in the history of sports. When
- 35:19Speaker 4: you look at the quarterback position, your defense depends on you,
- 35:23Speaker 4: your offense depends on you, the organization depends on you,
- 35:27Speaker 4: the fans depending depend on you. You are the emperor
- 35:31Speaker 4: the quarterback position, and if you're good at it, you'll
- 35:34Speaker 4: be treated like the emperor. But if you're not good
- 35:37Speaker 4: at it, they'll kick you to the curve, throw you aside,
- 35:40Speaker 4: and it sets the organization back. Sometimes. That's how important
- 35:45Speaker 4: that position is, and that's why they get paid the
- 35:47Speaker 4: most money and they're the most viable, I mean, and
- 35:51Speaker 4: that's the thing that's interesting about the quarterback position. You
- 35:54Speaker 4: don't know where they're going to come from. They come
- 35:56Speaker 4: from everywhere. You look at Rock Perdy, you look at
- 36:00Speaker 4: Aaron Rodgers getting to University of California, You look at
- 36:04Speaker 4: Josh Allen, not recruited out of high school. This list
- 36:08Speaker 4: goes on and on of these guys, and then you
- 36:11Speaker 4: have the guys who were a five star guy in
- 36:13Speaker 4: high school and all that kind of stuff. And I
- 36:15Speaker 4: can tell you this, evaluating high school players now at
- 36:21Speaker 4: the high school level and seeing these seeing these next
- 36:24Speaker 4: generation of quarterbacks, it's even harder because really, when you
- 36:30Speaker 4: see a kid, when you see a kid throw the
- 36:32Speaker 4: ball fifty five times in a game, he's seventy percent
- 36:37Speaker 4: completion ray four touchdowns, but he didn't throw a ball
- 36:40Speaker 4: over twelve yards. You know, there's so many different factors,
- 36:44Speaker 4: and I think the number one factor about the quarterback
- 36:47Speaker 4: position is these guys have it when even as a
- 36:53Speaker 4: young guy, you knew that guy had it. Was he
- 36:56Speaker 4: was maybe a little cocky, maybe was a little brash,
- 37:01Speaker 4: he was confident himself. The media didn't bother him. He
- 37:08Speaker 4: had a talented arm or, he had a talented mind
- 37:11Speaker 4: and had a tremendous work ethic. I think one of
- 37:15Speaker 4: the things you have to find out about the quarterback
- 37:17Speaker 4: position is what is his mindset and what is his
- 37:21Speaker 4: work ethic? Like does he if he's not going to
- 37:24Speaker 4: have the natural talents of the Aaron Rodgers and a
- 37:28Speaker 4: lot of things, he's going to have to have so
- 37:30Speaker 4: many other things. And the guys who have the talent
- 37:33Speaker 4: are gonna have to have will have to have the
- 37:35Speaker 4: other part of the game at one hundred percent to succeed.
- 37:39Speaker 4: So I mean, you look at look at Jackson at
- 37:43Speaker 4: the Ravens. A unique kid. He's unique in his own way.
- 37:46Speaker 4: He's a winner. All he does is win football games.
- 37:48Speaker 4: I had the opportunity to watch Jalen hurtson high school.
- 37:52Speaker 4: He was a winner. He went to Oklahoma, he was
- 37:55Speaker 4: a winner, went to Alabama, he was a winner. And
- 37:59Speaker 4: there was so many thoughts about him, whether it's a
- 38:04Speaker 4: false narrative or positive narrative that sometimes you don't know
- 38:08Speaker 4: what to believe. So you have to believe the talent.
- 38:10Speaker 4: I thought when Jalen Hurts went to the combine, he
- 38:14Speaker 4: threw the balls wall as any quarterback that was there.
- 38:17Speaker 4: He was he was six foot two, six ' one,
- 38:20Speaker 4: ran a four to six and I thought he had
- 38:22Speaker 4: a heck of a combine throwing the football. Now, what
- 38:27Speaker 4: happens in the quarterback position sometimes is you don't want
- 38:30Speaker 4: to believe what you see. Well, he played at Iowas,
- 38:35Speaker 4: he played at Iowa State. You know he didn't play
- 38:38Speaker 4: with a good team. There's so many narratives with that position.
- 38:41Speaker 4: That's why it's so hard. That's why it's so hard
- 38:44Speaker 4: to choose that guy.
- 38:45Speaker 6: Sometimes a lot of that that is that is why
- 38:48Speaker 6: we have you on the show because that is absolutely
- 38:50Speaker 6: fantastic evaluation. You know, you really peel back some layers
- 38:54Speaker 6: and some audience. Hey, bro, thanks so much for joining
- 38:56Speaker 6: us here on the NFL Report. You on our initial
- 38:59Speaker 6: podcas so you know you're leading things off for us.
- 39:02Speaker 5: Man. Good luck to you and really appreciate you.
- 39:05Speaker 4: All right, guys, take care.
- 39:07Speaker 6: All right, and when we come back, we're gonna talk
- 39:10Speaker 6: the age discrepancy.
- 39:12Speaker 5: Can older quarterback get along with his younger teammates? You
- 39:15Speaker 5: got a lot coming ahead on the NFL.
- 39:25Speaker 6: We are back for the final block of the NFL Report.
- 39:28Speaker 6: James Palmer, what is going on in New England? I
- 39:33Speaker 6: know we've been asking that for a while, but when
- 39:36Speaker 6: you see cutdown date and Mac Jones is the only
- 39:39Speaker 6: active quarterback on the roster, what are we doing here?
- 39:44Speaker 2: It's unconventional, Steve, and I think we've seen unconventional from
- 39:47Speaker 2: Bill Belichick before. It was really just going out there
- 39:50Speaker 2: and exposing both these quarterbacks to waivers and then they
- 39:55Speaker 2: have ultimately come back to the practice squad in Bailey,
- 39:58Speaker 2: Zappy and U Cunningham. I'm looking at Cunningham going, I'm
- 40:03Speaker 2: looking at Cunningham going, Steve, like this is going to
- 40:05Speaker 2: be Jalen Hurts for the next several.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Days, right.
- 40:08Speaker 2: I believe they open up against the Philadelphia Eagles. This
- 40:11Speaker 2: is going to be Jalen Hurts in practice for the
- 40:14Speaker 2: next ten days roughly. I was surprised at how they
- 40:17Speaker 2: went about it, but Bill Belichick made sure everybody knew
- 40:22Speaker 2: and he said it very clearly. There's gonna be some
- 40:24Speaker 2: unontentional ways about how we go about this, but we're
- 40:26Speaker 2: gonna get back to, you know, our fifty three in
- 40:28Speaker 2: our practice cane on how we want it to be.
- 40:30Speaker 2: I know a lot of people have buzzed about Brian
- 40:32Speaker 2: Hoyer as a potential return.
- 40:34Speaker 1: To New England.
- 40:35Speaker 5: That is the first time that's.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Ever been saying number two job was Honestly, yeah, there was,
- 40:41Speaker 2: I'm serious, but I don't think I don't think there's.
- 40:43Speaker 2: The number two job with the Raiders was early up
- 40:45Speaker 2: for grabs by any means, but it made people's minds.
- 40:49Speaker 2: And my point of it was, it just made people's
- 40:51Speaker 2: minds go right, like, what's the thought here when they
- 40:54Speaker 2: were both waved in a sense.
- 40:55Speaker 6: Well, I'm telling you, if I'm an opponent, I'm claiming
- 40:57Speaker 6: both of those guys. So they go to a game
- 40:59Speaker 6: with only Mac Jones and we'll see how this great
- 41:02Speaker 6: strategy works out. Speaking of great strategies, and I need
- 41:07Speaker 6: some help with this. You got to being an omar
- 41:09Speaker 6: Ruiz and Bridge of Condon back onto the NFL report
- 41:12Speaker 6: as the elder statesman here, as someone who has sons
- 41:16Speaker 6: ages twenty seven through thirty, I have a hard time
- 41:20Speaker 6: relating them, relating to them a lot. I'm related to them,
- 41:24Speaker 6: but a hard time relating to them because you know,
- 41:26Speaker 6: it was a guy who at one point had to
- 41:28Speaker 6: get up and.
- 41:28Speaker 5: Turn the TV channel.
- 41:30Speaker 6: So Bridge and Condon as the real youth expert on
- 41:34Speaker 6: the show. You were out at the RAMS practice earlier
- 41:36Speaker 6: this week when there was a conversation Kelly Stafford, Matthew
- 41:40Speaker 6: Stafford's wife. I'm pretty sure she was joking when she said.
- 41:44Speaker 5: Matt so old. He can't he can't figure out these
- 41:47Speaker 5: young guys.
- 41:47Speaker 6: You know, he doesn't know how to play Yu gi
- 41:49Speaker 6: oh and all of these things that these guys are playing.
- 41:52Speaker 6: So let's chew on this little bit, Bridget, since you
- 41:54Speaker 6: were there, what's the conversation and actually, more importantly, what's
- 41:58Speaker 6: the dynamic?
- 42:00Speaker 7: Okay, I think this was blown way out of proportion.
- 42:03Speaker 7: Anybody who knew was Kelly Stafford, and I don't know
- 42:05Speaker 7: her personally, but I listened to her podcast, she jokes
- 42:08Speaker 7: a lot, and this one hundred percent was a joke.
- 42:11Speaker 7: Whether it's true or not, there is a little bit
- 42:13Speaker 7: of truth to it, But I don't think that causes
- 42:15Speaker 7: any concern. There's a difference right when you are even
- 42:19Speaker 7: between you and I were talking about snapchat earlier on
- 42:22Speaker 7: the podcast, and you enjoyed, were like, what Snapchat like,
- 42:25Speaker 7: I'm gonna get in trouble with my wife. You're not
- 42:27Speaker 7: going to get in trouble with your wife if you
- 42:28Speaker 7: use it in the right way. But seriously, it's a difference.
- 42:33Speaker 7: There is a difference in age, of course, and almost
- 42:37Speaker 7: more like culture too, right. I think the younger kids
- 42:39Speaker 7: coming up because they grew up with TikTok, they grew
- 42:42Speaker 7: up with Snapchat, they grew up with phones at the
- 42:45Speaker 7: every second of their life, they operate a little differently.
- 42:49Speaker 7: But it's nothing to be said about, oh my god,
- 42:51Speaker 7: they're not going to be able to get along on
- 42:53Speaker 7: a football field together. I think that's where the out
- 42:56Speaker 7: of proportion came into play.
- 42:58Speaker 4: Well.
- 42:58Speaker 9: I think the broader point and all of this is
- 43:00Speaker 9: that Matthew Stafford perhaps has to try a little harder
- 43:05Speaker 9: now to relate to the players because they are in
- 43:07Speaker 9: their phones. They're not playing ping pong, They're not sitting
- 43:10Speaker 9: around doing those bonding things like they normally would or
- 43:13Speaker 9: like they used to in the locker room in their downtime.
- 43:16Speaker 9: He has to actively go seek a guy, figure out,
- 43:19Speaker 9: you know, where he's from, strike up a conversation what
- 43:23Speaker 9: he did this weekend in order to get to know him.
- 43:25Speaker 9: So it just takes a little more planning for Stafford
- 43:29Speaker 9: is what I read through Kelly Stafford's comments. Matthew Stafford
- 43:32Speaker 9: that is in having to exude that leadership in that
- 43:37Speaker 9: locker room, not necessarily that he can't relate to the guys.
- 43:40Speaker 9: It just takes a little extra effort because a lot
- 43:42Speaker 9: of the young guys are so attached to their cell
- 43:44Speaker 9: phones and they're not just hanging out naturally like they
- 43:47Speaker 9: used to do. I remember Tom Brady, remember he was
- 43:50Speaker 9: like twenty years older for a long time, but he
- 43:52Speaker 9: always related to the guys because he would just always
- 43:55Speaker 9: know their names and strike up conversations and all that.
- 43:58Speaker 5: Ja pee, let me get it here, because I'm gonna act.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Like the kids.
- 44:00Speaker 5: Hold up, Hold up, hold up. Why is it.
- 44:03Speaker 6: Matthew Stafford who's got to reach back Matthew Stafford's the
- 44:05Speaker 6: ones with the with the with the skins on the wall.
- 44:08Speaker 6: Why wouldn't these young folks JP be the one like,
- 44:11Speaker 6: I want to get to where that guy's.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Going, so let me learn more about him.
- 44:15Speaker 6: Why is it on the old guy who's got to
- 44:17Speaker 6: go fishing in the snapchat pool or whatever it is,
- 44:20Speaker 6: the yu gi oh card Pool to get with his
- 44:23Speaker 6: teammates because we've seen this, right, Look Aaron Rodgers on
- 44:25Speaker 6: Hard Knocks, you keep talking about.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Uto.
- 44:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I got kids, you know all that stuff. But
- 44:35Speaker 5: what I'm saying, what I'm.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Saying is like derailed Steve.
- 44:40Speaker 5: Well, look Aaron Rodgers was seeing a Hard Knocks he's
- 44:42Speaker 5: buddy buddy with all these guys.
- 44:44Speaker 6: Well ask Christian Watkins and all those guys, those young
- 44:46Speaker 6: players last year in Green Bay if he was that
- 44:48Speaker 6: nice to them, right, So that you know, it's like
- 44:51Speaker 6: I said, it takes like, hey, I've got to make
- 44:54Speaker 6: an effort on both sides.
- 44:56Speaker 5: All right, James gets back on the rails.
- 44:58Speaker 2: I'll say, I'll say, Steve, if you remember, it's it's
- 45:01Speaker 2: pretty much Julian Edeman's claim to fame, right, he is
- 45:03Speaker 2: the one that went and said I'm going to attach
- 45:06Speaker 2: myself to Tom Brady. I'm going to follow him in
- 45:08Speaker 2: every spot that he goes, every corner of the earth
- 45:10Speaker 2: he wants to throw a football, I'm going to go
- 45:11Speaker 2: there and be with him. That is the young guy
- 45:14Speaker 2: approach to the veteran quarterback you're talking to. And look
- 45:16Speaker 2: what it did for Julian Edelman. Omar brought up Brady
- 45:19Speaker 2: by the way and and being down there in an
- 45:21Speaker 2: elderly woman's home used as an airbnb for thirty seven
- 45:24Speaker 2: straight days.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Hold up, I got a chance to be a fly
- 45:28Speaker 1: on the wall. Yeah, yeah, that's where we put in
- 45:33Speaker 1: an elderly listen. Go on YouTube.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Well, wasn't offered. Wasn't offered back then, guys, But you
- 45:41Speaker 2: can go on YouTube. You can watch my Tampa Diaries
- 45:43Speaker 2: as I broadcast live from that home during COVID. But
- 45:46Speaker 2: I got to watch Tom Brady being a fly on
- 45:49Speaker 2: the wall. So few of us were allowed at those
- 45:51Speaker 2: practices to be right there on the sideline and watch
- 45:55Speaker 2: Brady interact with an entirely new group of guys. And
- 45:58Speaker 2: everything I heard from every player I spoke to on
- 46:00Speaker 2: that Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster was like he has found
- 46:04Speaker 2: a way to connect to everybody inside this room. And
- 46:07Speaker 2: he always heard in New England that the first thing
- 46:09Speaker 2: that happened when you came into that locker room is
- 46:11Speaker 2: Brady was one of the first people that went up
- 46:12Speaker 2: to you and introduced himself. He like he has to,
- 46:15Speaker 2: but he would introduce himself, you know, I'm Tom Brady,
- 46:18Speaker 2: and reach out himself. That is I think, Omar, maybe
- 46:24Speaker 2: one of the greatest traits that Brady showed over the
- 46:26Speaker 2: years was his ability to relate to every single guy
- 46:30Speaker 2: in the locker room. And it was a big aspect
- 46:32Speaker 2: for his success in Tampa, even though it was also
- 46:34Speaker 2: a big aspect for success throughout those years.
- 46:37Speaker 1: In New England.
- 46:38Speaker 9: Yeah, not just creating that chemistry, but just to buy
- 46:40Speaker 9: in then that those young guys Tom Brady knows my name,
- 46:44Speaker 9: and just how that just set the foundation for the
- 46:48Speaker 9: entire season and obviously all that success they had. I mean,
- 46:51Speaker 9: not only was he a phenomenal talent quarterback, but just
- 46:54Speaker 9: the leadership, like you said, James, just tremendous on and
- 46:58Speaker 9: off the field.
- 47:00Speaker 7: Real quick though, if we have a second, I was
- 47:02Speaker 7: around the Packers this training cab, but I was talking
- 47:05Speaker 7: to people who are around that team, and they said,
- 47:07Speaker 7: it's such a different vibe with Jordan Love because like
- 47:10Speaker 7: he's their boy, whereas with Aaron Rodgers he was seen
- 47:13Speaker 7: more as like a godfather figure. Right, don't speak unless
- 47:16Speaker 7: spoken too. But now we see on hard knocks it's
- 47:18Speaker 7: can hardly different in New York. So I one hundred
- 47:20Speaker 7: percent think it's on the older guy to determine which
- 47:24Speaker 7: way they want it to go. Yes, the younger guy
- 47:26Speaker 7: should be like respecting and trying to make an effort,
- 47:29Speaker 7: but the older quarterback is the one kind of in charge.
- 47:33Speaker 7: Do you want me to be in your circle or not?
- 47:36Speaker 6: Bridget this is that that's such a great point because
- 47:38Speaker 6: this isn't going away. Quarterbacks are playing into their forties now, no, right,
- 47:43Speaker 6: running backs. Running backs are playing to their twenty nine
- 47:46Speaker 6: before they get let go. So you know, this is
- 47:49Speaker 6: something And this is where I'm glad, Like I'm here,
- 47:51Speaker 6: I'm fifty seven. You are not as old as me, right,
- 47:56Speaker 6: and so so this is.
- 47:58Speaker 7: Something where I'm eighteenth birthday coming up.
- 48:01Speaker 6: There you go so generational things like, let's is there
- 48:05Speaker 6: something where in life?
- 48:07Speaker 4: Right?
- 48:07Speaker 6: You just got married, right, you're going through all these
- 48:09Speaker 6: familial stages and generations of people and things as well.
- 48:13Speaker 5: What are some of the generational.
- 48:14Speaker 6: Things yet, like people like me or an older quarterback
- 48:18Speaker 6: like Aaron Rodgers, whatever that you think need to take
- 48:21Speaker 6: place to establish harmony so there is a successful workplace relationship.
- 48:28Speaker 7: I think you just have to could be putting in
- 48:31Speaker 7: the effort. Like I think back to when I was
- 48:33Speaker 7: in like the Triangle Raleigh and Durham, and I think
- 48:37Speaker 7: about coach Cutcliff and Matt Brown. Why the players loved
- 48:41Speaker 7: those guys who were such older coaches. It's because they
- 48:43Speaker 7: come in the locker room after and do a little
- 48:45Speaker 7: dance or something. Right, They're not the best at it,
- 48:47Speaker 7: but it's showing, Hey, I want to be a part
- 48:50Speaker 7: of your world.
- 48:51Speaker 5: Right.
- 48:51Speaker 7: So I think these older quarterbacks have to almost say
- 48:53Speaker 7: like Okay, I don't understand what these ulio cards or
- 48:56Speaker 7: whatever they are that's going on, but like let me
- 48:59Speaker 7: play a hand, or let me come in this TikTok
- 49:02Speaker 7: for like once a week or something. Let me be
- 49:04Speaker 7: a part of your world and show that I'm making
- 49:06Speaker 7: an effort. Almost.
- 49:08Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I think that's it, you know, just
- 49:11Speaker 9: the effort and the leadership and you know, as a
- 49:14Speaker 9: game has changed over the years, so too has relationships in.
- 49:18Speaker 1: The locker room.
- 49:19Speaker 9: And you know it's not going away because, like you said,
- 49:22Speaker 9: it seems like every quarterback now Steve says they want
- 49:24Speaker 9: to play till they're forty five and follow Tom Brady's lead.
- 49:27Speaker 1: There.
- 49:28Speaker 9: You know, we've heard Russell Wilson say it, we heard
- 49:29Speaker 9: Drew Brees say it. You didn't quite get to that age.
- 49:32Speaker 9: But yeah, it's going to be an issue or not
- 49:35Speaker 9: one for years to come.
- 49:38Speaker 5: Good stuff.
- 49:38Speaker 6: Can you imagine like Bill Belichick walking through like Andy Reid,
- 49:42Speaker 6: you know who's got that great connection?
- 49:44Speaker 5: How about them Patriots?
- 49:48Speaker 1: Can he did a lot.
- 49:50Speaker 7: He already admitted he loves Taylor Swift, so he's taking
- 49:52Speaker 7: steps in the right now.
- 49:53Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, that's a major dub.
- 49:56Speaker 6: That's a major dub, all right, Bridge of Conn and
- 49:58Speaker 6: Omar Wesh, thank you so much, James Palmer.
- 50:01Speaker 5: Bring us home.
- 50:04Speaker 1: I appreciate you guys.
- 50:05Speaker 2: And also, Taylor Swift had something done to her Steve
- 50:07Speaker 2: that so many Patriots players wishes that was said to them,
- 50:10Speaker 2: that she is tough, that she is able to handle
- 50:13Speaker 2: the elements. All these Patriots to play for Bill Betchery
- 50:15Speaker 2: want to be called tough at some point. Now, this
- 50:18Speaker 2: was the introductory episode of the NFL Report, which was
- 50:23Speaker 2: just a podcast version. But you can see these smiling
- 50:25Speaker 2: faces of Steve Which and myself on the NFL channel.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Whether it's on Pluto or tub or Roku or Peacock,
- 50:33Speaker 2: it is the NFL Channel Mondays and Thursdays at seven fifteen.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Steve see that.
- 50:39Speaker 6: Yeah, the NFL Fast channels. You remember the word fast.
- 50:43Speaker 6: That's where we are because we're not just old. We're
- 50:45Speaker 6: keeping up with the new trends in television and the
- 50:49Speaker 6: new trends in Phantom for JP, for Steve Weitch, We're
- 50:53Speaker 6: out of here, just
