SPEAKER_00: I do like a normal margarita, but the Tommy one is delicious.
• 0:47
SPEAKER_00: They have amazing bar food.

• 1:13
SPEAKER_00: Now there's about two weeks roughly left in July.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_00: So trust me, get on down there and get yourself one of these coupon sheets.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_00: Alrighty, on to today's guest.
• 1:22
SPEAKER_00: I had never actually met her, and her name is Beck Tracy, and a lot of people that as soon as I mention her name, everyone has always had the same reaction.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_00: She is an incredible artist.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_00: Wow, she is so genuine, an authentic person, and just a kind, kind woman.
• 1:38
SPEAKER_00: And that's the sort of woman that I'd really wanted to get onto the podcast.
• 1:42
SPEAKER_00: So to say that when she rocked up at my house to record the interview, I was, I'm not gonna lie, I was a little bit fangirling.
• 1:49
  SPEAKER_00: She is just incredible.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_00: And so in our conversation, we talk about what it takes to be a visual artist, her incredible collaboration with Mara Collective, her famous rock art paintings.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_00: Trust me, if you haven't seen them, head to her page after this episode and you'll see what I'm talking about.
• 2:05
SPEAKER_00: Enough of me waffling, here is our conversation.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the podcast Beck.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I would have, as usual, talked about how legendary you are in the introduction.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_00: But for my listeners today, Beck is a formerly trained visual artist who was born in Derby, but she's currently based in Broome and is a proud Gidja and Nyarinyan woman.
• 2:26
SPEAKER_00: Now she's become renowned for her recent artworks of rock landscape paintings, and she's also had a recent collaboration with her beautiful artwork designs on fabric, but we're going to talk more about that later.
• 2:36
SPEAKER_00: So, Beck, can you tell my listeners for today's episode a little bit about yourself?
• 2:40
  SPEAKER_00: Of course.
• 2:41
SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me on here.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_01: It's been so nice to connect with you on Instagram.
• 2:45
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 2:46
SPEAKER_00: We were discussing at the start of this.
• 2:48
SPEAKER_00: I have wanted to meet you for ages, and I've lived in Rome for 11 years.
• 2:52
SPEAKER_00: I don't even reckon I, to be honest, I've ever seen you from afar.
• 2:55
  SPEAKER_00: I know.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_00: I've seen you online, I've seen you on social media, I've certainly heard about you.
• 3:00
SPEAKER_00: Lots of people that I know, they're like, oh my god, Becca's a dream.
• 3:03
  SPEAKER_00: Oh.
• 3:03
SPEAKER_00: And then obviously you're very good friends with Ash, who is one of my great uh interview people on the podcast here.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_00: Finally, we get to meet and get to have this chat today.
• 3:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so thank you for having me on.
• 3:16
  SPEAKER_01: Tell everyone about yourself.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, I am, yeah, like you said, a visual artist.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_01: But I was born in Derby, grew up here in Broome.
• 3:25
SPEAKER_01: Currently doing part-time art and part-time disability support work.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_01: So I work for a company called Kimberly Care Group.
• 3:32
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 3:32
SPEAKER_01: Um, Monday, Tuesdays, and I have I've sort of been in the disability support worker roles for about six years.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_01: And I also, so then I do like my art on Wednesday and Thursdays of the week.
• 3:44
SPEAKER_01: They're my dedicated art days.
• 3:46
SPEAKER_01: But my goal is to hopefully become a full-time artist one day, which is what I'm working toward.
• 3:52
  SPEAKER_01: But that's exciting.
• 3:53
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 3:55
  SPEAKER_01: I know.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_01: I've tried to set myself some big goals for this year.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_01: And so part of it is like I've just being a disability support worker, have absolutely loved that.
• 4:03
SPEAKER_01: And before that, I was in youth worker role.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_01: So always like, you know, in the social worker and helping others.
• 4:09
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 4:10
  SPEAKER_01: Which I have loved.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_01: And it's been hard to also pull away from roles like that.
• 4:15
SPEAKER_01: As each year goes by, I have, you know, just different goals for my art.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_01: Toward the end of the year, it's something that I'm I'm aiming toward.
• 4:23
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_00: I love I love women with big goals, and that is a big goal.
• 4:27
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 4:27
SPEAKER_00: I have no doubt that you're going to get it done.
• 4:29
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, fingers crossed.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_00: Now, what makes you want to become an artist to start with?
• 4:33
SPEAKER_00: Like, has this been something that you've just been brilliant at forever?
• 4:37
  SPEAKER_00: Absolutely not.
• 4:38
  SPEAKER_00: Okay.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know you obviously had to have training, but tell me more about this training.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_01: Well, I think that I was raised like by two creative parents.
• 4:48
SPEAKER_01: I think that's probably what ignited that creativity within me.
• 4:52
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_01: My dad was an artist.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_01: Mum was also very creative.
• 4:56
SPEAKER_01: She just didn't do as much like paintings and things like that as dad.
• 5:00
SPEAKER_01: Her creativity was more in a different area.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_01: But it was always supported.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_01: I remember being in high school and my art teacher came, like approached my friends and I.
• 5:09
SPEAKER_01: We were in year 10.
• 5:10
SPEAKER_01: Oh no, we were in year nine going into year 10.
• 5:12
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_01: And having to choose our electives.
• 5:15
SPEAKER_01: And she was like, You guys should choose art.
• 5:17
SPEAKER_01: And we all thought, oh, what a great way to all be together.
• 5:19
SPEAKER_01: We should all just choose art and just so that we can hang out.
• 5:22
  SPEAKER_01: Hang out.
• 5:23
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 5:24
  SPEAKER_01: Basically.
• 5:25
SPEAKER_01: So that's exactly what we did.
• 5:26
SPEAKER_01: And then I ended up being like, oh, I should really love it.
• 5:29
SPEAKER_01: And sort of finding out that had a bit of a talent as well, which probably came from my dad because he was an incredible artist as well.
• 5:37
SPEAKER_01: And then I just honed that.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_01: And I think at the end of the day, like it just ended up getting me through school in the end because it was the only thing I really was passionate.
• 5:45
SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, I was just very passionate about it.
• 5:47
SPEAKER_01: And years 11 and 12, I remember we had to when we had to start thinking seriously about what we're going to do after school.
• 5:53
  SPEAKER_00: Oh yes.
• 5:54
SPEAKER_01: It was the only, like I just knew it was just art.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_01: I just didn't know what else I was passionate about.
• 5:59
SPEAKER_01: I didn't know what other areas I wanted to go in.
• 6:01
  SPEAKER_01: It was just art.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_01: So my art teacher ended up helping me apply for and look for colleges around Australia, and we found one in Sydney.
• 6:09
  SPEAKER_01: Hey, that's cool.
• 6:11
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 6:11
SPEAKER_01: And I chose Sydney because I had family there.
• 6:14
SPEAKER_01: And at that time, the year after my siblings were going for boarding school.
• 6:19
SPEAKER_01: So my parents decided to send my younger brother and sister at that time for boarding school.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_01: So I thought, why not go to Sydney as well?
• 6:26
  SPEAKER_01: Can be with them.
• 6:27
  SPEAKER_01: And um That's a big deal.
• 6:29
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_00: Did you what at what 17, 18?
• 6:31
SPEAKER_01: I was 17, so I graduated school and I moved over to Sydney 17 years old.
• 6:37
SPEAKER_01: And then the following year obviously turned 18.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, did my gap did a gap year in Sydney where I just was working.
• 6:43
SPEAKER_01: And then the following year after that went into complete like a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
• 6:49
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 6:49
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 6:50
SPEAKER_01: And then you did that?
• 6:51
SPEAKER_01: And then I did college, I went to like College of Fine Arts, which is through UNSW.
• 6:56
  SPEAKER_01: And that was a three-year degree.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_01: It was just something that I guess fell into my lap with like my art teacher coming and approaching us.
• 7:03
  SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
• 7:04
  SPEAKER_01: And then from there.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_01: Are you in contact with that person still?
• 7:06
SPEAKER_01: We still, yeah, every now and then, like on Facebook, I think we we have each other, we're connected.
• 7:12
SPEAKER_01: I'll have to reach out to her and just say.
• 7:14
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, definitely.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_00: I mean look, as a teacher myself, I think that's really special when like a former student would be like, now look, like kind of like now look at me.
• 7:22
  SPEAKER_00: Definitely.
• 7:22
SPEAKER_00: And especially for you, I'd be like, oh my god, I need to get a signed piece before it starts getting too expensive and too rare.
• 7:30
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_01: There was one stage where she did contact me when she was, she was at St.
• 7:34
  SPEAKER_01: Mary's for a really long time.
• 7:37
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 7:37
SPEAKER_01: And then when she was leaving, she contacted me, being like, Beck, you need you should apply, you should come and do the art teacher role.
• 7:44
  SPEAKER_01: Oh yes.
• 7:44
  SPEAKER_01: But I knew I didn't want to at that time I didn't want to be a teacher, uh-huh.
• 7:48
SPEAKER_01: Even though it would be amazing, but I was like, hmm, I don't know where I actually was.
• 7:52
  SPEAKER_01: I was like, I I also didn't have a teaching degree.
• 7:55
SPEAKER_00: So that probably Oh yeah.
• 7:57
  SPEAKER_00: That's true.
• 7:57
SPEAKER_00: I guess you could just do the dip head.
• 7:59
SPEAKER_00: But I mean you either know or you don't.
• 8:00
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 8:01
  SPEAKER_00: Wow.
• 8:02
SPEAKER_00: Going forward though, let's chat about this awesome collaboration with Julie from Mara Collective because the fashion that they do is absolutely divine.
• 8:11
SPEAKER_00: If anybody's listening to this, you have to take time out to have a look at that page.
• 8:15
SPEAKER_00: I mean, obviously check out Beck's page and you're gonna see it there on your social media.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_00: But the fashion that they do is incredible.
• 8:21
SPEAKER_00: And so one of your designs has ended up on this fabric that's then been at Melbourne Fashion Festival.
• 8:28
SPEAKER_00: That was this February, wasn't it?
• 8:30
  SPEAKER_00: It was.
• 8:30
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 8:31
SPEAKER_00: It's like Resort Glam collection, but the dresses are just stunning.
• 8:35
SPEAKER_00: I know they do skirts as well and the silk scarves, but how did this collaboration even come about?
• 8:40
SPEAKER_01: I have known Julie for about I think over 10 years, but just through Instagram.
• 8:47
SPEAKER_01: So we connected ages ago, where I think it was her very first collection when she was starting out.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_01: She got me and some others to model it here in Broom against all the red rocks.
• 9:00
SPEAKER_01: So we have known each other since then, but never met each other in person.
• 9:03
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 9:04
SPEAKER_01: So we both were following each other's journeys.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_01: I like followed her fashion and see how like saw how that evolved over the years, and she was following my art.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_01: And then I guess when I started to get more into the rock patterns, I remember that it was a year before we actually started the collaboration.
• 9:20
SPEAKER_01: She reached out to me and said, I'll we'll have to collaborate one day.
• 9:24
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 9:25
SPEAKER_01: And then fast forward, it's all it's all happened.
• 9:27
SPEAKER_01: And she just reached out to me and said, like, she's got her next collection coming up where she's releasing her what would you call it in fashion?
• 9:34
  SPEAKER_01: Um, that's a really good question.
• 9:37
SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't want to say a next design, but maybe would you call it exhibition?
• 9:42
  SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know.
• 9:43
SPEAKER_00: There is a word for it.
• 9:45
SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm going blank at the moment.
• 9:46
  SPEAKER_00: That's okay.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_00: Watch this space, we're gonna find out what it is.
• 9:49
SPEAKER_00: Somebody will be screaming, going, it's uh whatever it is.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_00: But yes, I know what you mean.
• 9:54
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 9:54
SPEAKER_00: So for that piece though, did you have is that just the one design that they've then taken and put onto the fabric itself?
• 10:01
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so she had a look at a couple of my artworks.
• 10:04
SPEAKER_01: She actually ended up choosing two.
• 10:06
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 10:07
SPEAKER_01: And the one that she went with that is currently in the her terrain collection is um my layers of Reddell artwork.
• 10:15
  SPEAKER_01: Oh yes.
• 10:16
  SPEAKER_01: It was just amazing.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_01: It was a dream to work, you know, collaborate on this with her.
• 10:20
SPEAKER_01: She just made it so she was just so transparent the entire process.
• 10:24
SPEAKER_01: She sent me every single update.
• 10:26
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 10:26
SPEAKER_01: So I really felt part of the process because she's based in Sydney.
• 10:31
SPEAKER_01: She just kept me up to date with the whole thing, and she's just so lovely, Julie.
• 10:35
SPEAKER_01: And then she ended up inviting me over to Melbourne Fashion Festival.
• 10:38
  SPEAKER_01: And I just said, I can't miss this.
• 10:40
  SPEAKER_01: I have to go.
• 10:41
  SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
• 10:42
SPEAKER_01: I remember I sat on it for a really long time.
• 10:44
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
• 10:45
SPEAKER_01: But then toward as it started to get closer, I'm like, what am I doing?
• 10:48
SPEAKER_01: I need to go and just be part of this and see it.
• 10:51
SPEAKER_01: And that was just an incredible experience.
• 10:53
SPEAKER_01: And then this was Samantha Harris, she wore one of the pieces.
• 10:56
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was in the Wom Women's Weekly.
• 10:59
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 10:59
SPEAKER_01: Uh, which was pretty cool.
• 11:01
  SPEAKER_01: Very cool.
• 11:02
SPEAKER_01: Because when I was in a in high school, I, you know, Samantha Harris and um as a model was like my little you just admire, especially as an indigenous model in that industry at that time.
• 11:12
  SPEAKER_01: Definitely.
• 11:12
SPEAKER_01: When we were growing up, it was amazing.
• 11:14
SPEAKER_01: So seeing her in one of my in the in Julie and I's dress was pretty amazing.
• 11:20
  SPEAKER_01: Man, you're famous.
• 11:22
  SPEAKER_00: No, okay.
• 11:24
SPEAKER_00: I want to know this.
• 11:25
SPEAKER_00: How long have you been selling your artwork or like doing commissions for people?
• 11:30
SPEAKER_00: Is this something that's relatively new?
• 11:32
SPEAKER_01: Yes, I would say more new the way like how it's it's just been such a progression.
• 11:38
SPEAKER_01: So I obviously went to art school in Sydney.
• 11:41
SPEAKER_01: After that, I took some really random parts.
• 11:44
SPEAKER_01: Like I think I started my master's in commerce at one stage.
• 11:47
  SPEAKER_01: I didn't get through that.
• 11:49
SPEAKER_01: And at that time, I remember just trying to figure out where do I want to go with my art.
• 11:53
SPEAKER_01: I also started my master's in art therapy.
• 11:56
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 11:57
SPEAKER_00: Uh so I stumbled across Astrid, who came to a recent Brent Chamber event, and we were talking about obviously the podcast, and I said, Oh, I've got I'm gonna have Beck coming on, and then she just whips out her phone and shows me this donger.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_00: And when you say donger, you're like, okay, what's it gonna look like?
• 12:15
  SPEAKER_00: And it is incredible.
• 12:17
SPEAKER_00: Oh, I think the artwork that's in there has transformed it.
• 12:20
SPEAKER_00: And so this is the point of me saying this is that see, this is such a small, we know Broom is a small community, but it's such a small world that somebody as random that you're talking to at an event can be like, oh, I know her, and she's also done art for me.
• 12:33
  SPEAKER_00: Definitely.
• 12:34
SPEAKER_01: Well yeah, oh Astrid, yes, that was very lucky to be axed for that.
• 12:38
SPEAKER_01: Okay, like anything, any job that I am axed to do, I just always feel so blessed.
• 12:43
SPEAKER_01: Same with Julie with the fashion collaboration.
• 12:46
SPEAKER_01: I remember just saying like thank you, without you know, these collaborations as well.
• 12:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's taken my art practice in I guess a wider range of what I what I like thought was capable of as an artist.
• 13:00
  SPEAKER_01: It's not just painting.
• 13:02
SPEAKER_01: You can really take it.
• 13:03
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
• 13:04
SPEAKER_01: And then have you got something with dental code?
• 13:06
  SPEAKER_01: I'm sure I saw something.
• 13:07
SPEAKER_01: Steph is going to be putting some of my prints on her on the walls in the new building, which is pretty incredible.
• 13:15
  SPEAKER_01: Have you seen it?
• 13:16
SPEAKER_01: I haven't been there yet, but I'm sure that I'll go and suss it out.
• 13:20
SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen it since it's the fully read, like it's been finished, but we I had a walkthrough with Steph, and it's pretty incredible.
• 13:27
SPEAKER_01: Don't feel like I'm in broom when I'm in there.
• 13:30
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, for sure.
• 13:30
SPEAKER_00: So your artwork is getting out there.
• 13:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think it's just been it's been each year a very slow progression.
• 13:38
  SPEAKER_01: It hasn't happened quickly.
• 13:40
SPEAKER_01: And I think each year I've had different goals that I've set for myself and different ideas of where I wanted to take my art.
• 13:46
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 13:46
SPEAKER_01: This year is probably the first year that I'm really clear about it.
• 13:50
SPEAKER_01: Where and I think it's because of all the opportunities that has has been happening slowly over the years and seeing like where I can take my art and being like, all right, that's it.
• 13:59
SPEAKER_01: Like I really want to do this full-time one day.
• 14:01
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, for sure.
• 14:02
SPEAKER_01: And being able to see the possibility of that happening.
• 14:04
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 14:05
  SPEAKER_00: I mean, I believe in you.
• 14:06
  unknown: Thank you.
• 14:07
  SPEAKER_00: Your artwork is incredible.
• 14:08
SPEAKER_00: I feel like when you're talking about it, it's it's amazing and it's original.
• 14:12
SPEAKER_00: I don't reckon I've seen anybody do landscape rock art that literally looks like the rocks that you see in in the landscape itself.
• 14:21
SPEAKER_00: You know, sometimes when you see stuff, it's either an interpretation or I get that art is always subjective, and that's the beauty of art.
• 14:28
SPEAKER_00: Some people might take one look at somebody else's artwork and go, I'm not really a fan.
• 14:32
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 14:32
SPEAKER_00: But I feel like something like this, you can put it up in any space and it's like it's going to remind you of that location.
• 14:39
SPEAKER_01: That's definitely the goal that I have when I'm doing my art.
• 14:42
SPEAKER_01: And I think when I started like being interested in doing rock, I remembered walking along Riddell.
• 14:47
SPEAKER_01: It's one of my favorite beaches.
• 14:48
SPEAKER_01: I've always, you know, we've gone there when I was little as a family.
• 14:52
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 14:52
  SPEAKER_01: So Ridell's a really special place.
• 14:54
SPEAKER_01: So I continue to go there, and I remember walking along as the sun was setting, and I just noticed the way that it was like sh the sun was shining, the light was shining on the rock, and it just looked absolutely amazing.
• 15:04
SPEAKER_01: And I think from there, I remember just being so blown away by not just like the patterns and textures, but just the way that it made you feel.
• 15:11
SPEAKER_01: And I think that's part of it of being able to capture that in my paintings as well.
• 15:17
SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think also part of my practice now and going down that avenue of like painting rock patterns, it's about stopping and noticing.
• 15:26
SPEAKER_01: So I do a lot of painting outdoors where I'll take my canvas and paint and choose a spot and I'll just try like I'll just paint there.
• 15:34
  SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
• 15:34
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 15:35
SPEAKER_00: That that was I guess that was gonna be my next question is when you're actually doing the artwork, are you listening to music?
• 15:39
SPEAKER_00: But if you're going out, are you just listening to nature?
• 15:42
SPEAKER_01: Yes, just nature, which is so nice.
• 15:44
SPEAKER_01: And really, it gives me the like opportunity to sort of let go of my style a little bit as well, and not so much, you know, have have a bit more freedom in what I'm doing and expressing myself and what I'm seeing.
• 15:57
SPEAKER_00: When I am doing any type of creative thing, it's usually I have to have music in the background.
• 16:03
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 16:03
SPEAKER_00: Only because my mind starts thinking of things I could be doing.
• 16:07
SPEAKER_00: Do you know what I mean?
• 16:08
SPEAKER_00: Like the to-do list is just non-stop, and then there's the 17 internet tab browsers.
• 16:13
SPEAKER_00: But if I'm doing something creative and I'm wanting to just zone out, it's I don't know, I shouldn't really be admitting this, but knitting is like one of my new things I've only just started.
• 16:25
SPEAKER_00: I know, and I joined this gang, it's called Cardi Gang, which I thought was cute as.
• 16:29
  SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
• 16:30
SPEAKER_00: I've bought the knit and uh, you know, I bought the yarn and and the wool to try and give it a shot, but I've only just started.
• 16:37
SPEAKER_00: And if I don't have music on in the background, I'm I'm literally just not even concentrating.
• 16:42
SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking of other things that I should be doing, and should I be doing this thing?
• 16:46
SPEAKER_00: And that's why I thought for you, I'm just interested to know.
• 16:49
SPEAKER_00: But it makes sense now that you're going to these spots, you you don't really want to ruin that serenity.
• 16:54
SPEAKER_01: And I'm the same when I'm at home, I always have to have either a a TV series on of something or music.
• 17:01
SPEAKER_01: And what music doesn't listen to?
• 17:03
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm very I haven't actually listened to music while I paint for a while.
• 17:08
SPEAKER_01: But when it is, it's very like acoustic, calm.
• 17:11
SPEAKER_01: Because if it's if it's anything else that same, like I don't know, it gets in my head and I feel very overstimulated.
• 17:17
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 17:17
SPEAKER_01: Because at the same time, but I I mainly am like TV series.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_01: I always have a show on on the background as I'm painting.
• 17:25
SPEAKER_01: Because I'll like on my painting days, I'll sit there for eight hours straight and just.
• 17:30
  SPEAKER_01: Holy care.
• 17:30
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 17:31
SPEAKER_01: Sometimes I even forget to eat and drink.
• 17:33
SPEAKER_01: Oh, like really force myself on the other hand.
• 17:35
SPEAKER_01: Okay, you're in the time.
• 17:36
SPEAKER_01: You're in the time when that's happening.
• 17:38
SPEAKER_01: I can just the one thing that I can just sit there for that amount of time straight and just and do something.
• 17:44
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 17:45
SPEAKER_01: Because other every other area I think of my life, my my siblings and things, uh, you know, family and partner will say that I'm quite impatient.
• 17:52
SPEAKER_00: But I can I can sit hours.
• 17:55
  SPEAKER_00: That's really interesting.
• 17:56
  SPEAKER_00: Thanks for sharing that.
• 17:57
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 17:57
SPEAKER_00: I'm sure there's going to be other creatives that'll be listening to that, going, yep, that's what I do, or something similar.
• 18:02
  SPEAKER_01: Definitely.
• 18:03
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 18:04
SPEAKER_01: And I think it's also because you have to put in the time to get what you want out of the your painting or whatever.
• 18:10
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, definitely.
• 18:11
SPEAKER_00: My latest thing, obviously, I'm obsessed with Ella Langley.
• 18:14
SPEAKER_00: I'm always obsessed with Taylor Swift.
• 18:16
SPEAKER_00: But Ella Langley, I'm Dandelion.
• 18:18
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 18:18
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, Dandelion.
• 18:20
SPEAKER_00: But I've got a bad habit of like, I can't just sit there and listen.
• 18:22
SPEAKER_00: I then have to like Google the lyrics and be like, is that what she said?
• 18:26
SPEAKER_00: Obviously, because of her accent.
• 18:27
  SPEAKER_00: Very southern.
• 18:29
SPEAKER_00: And then I'm like, okay, when is she coming to Australia next?
• 18:31
SPEAKER_00: And then I go on a rabbit hole.
• 18:32
SPEAKER_00: I'm like, am I going to currently be in Los Angeles in October?
• 18:36
SPEAKER_00: Because that's where I could get tickets.
• 18:38
SPEAKER_00: Dear God, this is how my brain works.
• 18:41
SPEAKER_00: And I just waste so much time.
• 18:43
  SPEAKER_00: I've forgotten what I was doing.
• 18:44
SPEAKER_00: I've just just gone down this rabbit hole.
• 18:46
  SPEAKER_00: I love that.
• 18:47
  SPEAKER_00: I know.
• 18:47
  SPEAKER_01: And then video clips.
• 18:48
SPEAKER_01: You have to also jump onto YouTube and have a look at the video clip of it.
• 18:52
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 18:52
SPEAKER_01: I love Ella Langley as well.
• 18:54
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, good.
• 18:55
SPEAKER_01: She's the one I always lit have on as well.
• 18:58
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 18:58
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 18:58
  SPEAKER_01: She's fabulous.
• 18:59
SPEAKER_01: Okay, wow, we have more things in common.
• 19:01
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 19:02
  SPEAKER_01: This is great.
• 19:02
SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say country before because I am I love country.
• 19:06
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
• 19:07
SPEAKER_01: But because growing up in Kimberley's with my parents, you know, we listen to country, so it's always country playing.
• 19:14
  SPEAKER_01: Definitely our house.
• 19:15
SPEAKER_00: Look, besides painting though, what else do you like?
• 19:18
  SPEAKER_00: What are your interests?
• 19:19
SPEAKER_00: What do you like to keep busy to?
• 19:20
  SPEAKER_00: I'm interested.
• 19:21
SPEAKER_01: Uh I love I think just you know, growing up here as well, fishing, camping, you know, the classic that probably so many people are here and love to do.
• 19:30
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, that's hilarious.
• 19:31
SPEAKER_01: I hate fishing and camping.
• 19:32
  SPEAKER_00: Do you really?
• 19:33
SPEAKER_00: Oh I was talking about this on last week's episode with Demi.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_00: My version of fishing and camping, or camping, I should say, it rhymes with the crown or the writs.
• 19:44
  SPEAKER_00: Like, that's me.
• 19:44
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 19:45
SPEAKER_00: I, in my former life with my first husband, he loved fishing and camping.
• 19:49
SPEAKER_00: And I obviously in Derby and Wyndham in particular.
• 19:52
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 19:52
  SPEAKER_00: It's like that's the hotspot.
• 19:54
SPEAKER_00: I don't want to go fishing and camping.
• 19:56
SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm just not interested in it.
• 19:58
  SPEAKER_00: I don't like the pack up, I don't like the setup.
• 20:00
SPEAKER_00: I always say it was grounds for divorce.
• 20:01
SPEAKER_00: That's not why we got divorced.
• 20:03
SPEAKER_00: But I used to say that all the time.
• 20:04
SPEAKER_00: Putting up the bloody tent or the camper trailer is so good.
• 20:08
  SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
• 20:08
SPEAKER_01: See, it's the opposite for me and my partner.
• 20:10
  SPEAKER_01: It's what connects us.
• 20:12
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's so interesting.
• 20:13
SPEAKER_01: So sometimes if we are having disagreements, he he's like, well, let's go fishing or let's get out on country, you know.
• 20:19
SPEAKER_01: He knows that's something we uh we just really enjoy together.
• 20:23
SPEAKER_01: And do you have like a favourite spot?
• 20:25
  SPEAKER_01: Not really.
• 20:26
SPEAKER_01: When we just from here in town, we go to Monari quite often because it's just easy, you know.
• 20:31
  SPEAKER_00: I've never been there.
• 20:32
  SPEAKER_00: Really?
• 20:33
SPEAKER_00: I have been in Broome for 11 years and never been to Minari.
• 20:36
SPEAKER_00: I've never been to James Price Point.
• 20:38
  SPEAKER_00: No, I know.
• 20:38
SPEAKER_00: I did a wedding at New Brung.
• 20:40
SPEAKER_00: So that was the first time.
• 20:41
  SPEAKER_01: That was beautiful elsewhere.
• 20:42
SPEAKER_00: And I haven't been to Mercedes Cove.
• 20:44
SPEAKER_00: I'd love to go there.
• 20:45
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 20:45
SPEAKER_00: But I mean, I've obviously been around one hour point in Signet Bay, and I did a wedding at Judding, which was really which was really cool.
• 20:52
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 20:53
  SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no.
• 20:54
SPEAKER_00: Oh, you'll have to go.
• 20:55
SPEAKER_00: It's not my OCD, I don't want to get my car dirty.
• 20:58
SPEAKER_00: I don't want to get dust on, I don't want to get the red dust.
• 21:01
SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, it's okay going down the track in Juddigen, but I don't really want to go off anywhere else.
• 21:06
  SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
• 21:07
  SPEAKER_00: It's terrible.
• 21:08
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if you don't like camping or fishing, I can understand.
• 21:10
SPEAKER_00: I should not admit to this, but yes, I'm not a massive fan of it.
• 21:14
  SPEAKER_00: I know.
• 21:15
SPEAKER_01: I love that you said that it can that it brings you together.
• 21:18
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it does.
• 21:19
SPEAKER_01: And we do a lot of it when we can.
• 21:21
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 21:21
SPEAKER_01: When life isn't getting in the way.
• 21:23
SPEAKER_01: We do a lot of fishing and camping.
• 21:25
SPEAKER_01: Like we just recently came back from the Gibb River Road.
• 21:28
  SPEAKER_01: Oh.
• 21:29
  SPEAKER_01: Was it busy?
• 21:30
  SPEAKER_01: We went nine nights.
• 21:31
SPEAKER_01: It was busy the roads, but we I have family up the Gibbs.
• 21:35
SPEAKER_01: Where my mum grew up is uh on a like a little station call Yulambu.
• 21:40
SPEAKER_01: So we spots where we have it, you know.
• 21:43
SPEAKER_01: Oh to our magic spots.
• 21:46
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 21:47
SPEAKER_00: If I have to go camping, I'm going to those private spots at El Cuestro.
• 21:50
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 21:51
SPEAKER_00: And it's funny because one of my well, my best friend, she lived in Catana for 15 years, and that would probably be in the last couple of years.
• 21:59
SPEAKER_00: I've got I went to the Once, but we were meant to go last year, and it was meant to be like this I don't want to say a rite of passage, but it was meant to be like a goodbye to the East Kimley because she'd been there for 15 years, and it was right around the time that my nana got sick, like real sick, and it sort of just never eventuated.
• 22:18
SPEAKER_00: But I reckon there's a part of me that's like we just still have to do it.
• 22:21
SPEAKER_00: Yes, we just have to go to one of those private spots and do it, and then I could still go to the bar, they'll quest it, get a whiskey, fancy camping scene.
• 22:30
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, glamp, yeah, exactly.
• 22:33
  SPEAKER_00: I know.
• 22:34
  SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
• 22:35
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so if you weren't an artist, and obviously if you weren't doing, you know, your disability supports role, is there something else that you would be doing?
• 22:43
SPEAKER_01: I've never thought about it because I've always just art has always just been there since year 10 when I picked it up as an elective.
• 22:50
SPEAKER_01: It it just every single year just been it's a part of who I am now.
• 22:54
SPEAKER_00: This is we're coming to the end now.
• 22:56
  SPEAKER_00: Okay.
• 22:56
SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna do the rapid fire questions.
• 22:58
  SPEAKER_00: Okay.
• 22:59
SPEAKER_00: The first one is if someone was thinking of like say they were passionate about wanting to start painting, but were either nervous or not even sure how to even get started, what's some advice that you would give them?
• 23:10
  SPEAKER_01: Just start.
• 23:11
SPEAKER_01: I honestly think, just I know that's very simple advice, but you have to start somewhere.
• 23:16
SPEAKER_01: And I think maybe find something that you're passionate about.
• 23:20
SPEAKER_01: I think we all have something that drives us.
• 23:23
SPEAKER_01: So choose a subject that you, you know, you're passionate about and try maybe start there.
• 23:29
SPEAKER_01: But the beauty about art is I I do feel like it's just a form of self-expression.
• 23:34
SPEAKER_01: You don't really have to be good at it.
• 23:36
SPEAKER_01: I feel like even when I started, I had no idea that I'd uh it would lead me to where I am today when I picked up it as an elective in year 10, and then I slowly found something that I enjoyed painting, and that's evolved over time.
• 23:51
SPEAKER_01: Like things that I painted then I don't anymore.
• 23:54
SPEAKER_01: And so it's just about starting somewhere and then going from there, I think.
• 23:58
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's good advice.
• 24:00
SPEAKER_00: No, that is good advice, and I mean that's really good to know in the sense that I guess in my head, and because you're just so good at the the rock paintings, I just picture that you've just instantly from when you very first started were doing rocks.
• 24:10
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but you weren't.
• 24:11
SPEAKER_01: I was doing other things.
• 24:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think like when I look back at it, it's so random.
• 24:16
SPEAKER_01: I there was a stage where I would just do portraits.
• 24:19
SPEAKER_01: I was really obsessed with people's faces, okay, like painting and drawing people's faces.
• 24:24
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 24:24
SPEAKER_01: And so I'd always get my family, like my siblings to just sit there, you know, and be like, let me draw you quickly.
• 24:30
SPEAKER_01: And they get really annoyed at me eventually.
• 24:33
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 24:33
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that was that was where so then it was portraits for a long time.
• 24:37
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 24:38
SPEAKER_01: And then when I moved to Sydney, it changed from that to painting landscapes because I was really homesick and I just wanted to sort of see, you know, the red earth again or whatever.
• 24:48
SPEAKER_01: So I just paint it.
• 24:49
  SPEAKER_00: Oh.
• 24:50
SPEAKER_01: So it was it all comes from within of what it is that drives you, you know what you're feeling, and you you translate that onto the canvas.
• 24:57
  SPEAKER_01: So everybody is different.
• 24:59
SPEAKER_00: All right, what's something that you wish for in the future?
• 25:01
  SPEAKER_00: I wish to be a full-time artist.
• 25:03
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
• 25:04
  SPEAKER_00: That's great.
• 25:04
  SPEAKER_00: That's a great goal.
• 25:05
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 25:06
  SPEAKER_00: So watch this space.
• 25:07
SPEAKER_00: People that are listening, they'll be like, you when you're super famous in like another year's time, even more than what you are now.
• 25:14
SPEAKER_00: They'll be like, oh my god, you had Beck on your podcast.
• 25:17
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 25:18
  SPEAKER_01: I can't wait for that.
• 25:19
SPEAKER_01: Well, you we talk it out, you know.
• 25:20
SPEAKER_01: It's like that manifestation thing.
• 25:22
  SPEAKER_01: Definitely.
• 25:23
SPEAKER_01: Uh now what's something that you're truly grateful for?
• 25:26
SPEAKER_01: I'm very grateful for just health in general.
• 25:29
SPEAKER_01: I think every day I do wake up and that's something that I'm reminded of.
• 25:33
SPEAKER_01: I think being a disability support worker, working with people who might not have some of the, you know, um use of their legs or whatever it is.
• 25:41
SPEAKER_01: Things, simple things like that, I'm just so grateful for.
• 25:44
SPEAKER_01: And I always, if I find myself getting caught up in like down being a down spiral of my own life, I'm like, snap out of it.
• 25:52
  SPEAKER_01: I have absolutely nothing.
• 25:54
SPEAKER_01: I look around and I see, you know, we have the simple things like a roof over our head, feared in our bellies.
• 25:59
SPEAKER_01: I know that's very simple, but it's it it generally is.
• 26:03
SPEAKER_00: So thank you for sharing that because I don't think people probably put that as high as what it should be.
• 26:08
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 26:09
  SPEAKER_00: Definitely.
• 26:10
SPEAKER_00: Okay, lastly, in all my episodes, I get people, my guest, to do a shout-out to a special woman, could be, you know, a hand for two, two, three, whatever you're feeling in the moment.
• 26:21
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 26:21
SPEAKER_00: But a shout-out to somebody who's either inspired you or you think they just simply deserve a shout-out.
• 26:26
SPEAKER_01: I think I'll do a little special shout-out for my she's a work colleague of mine, and I think you know her Rossi Beno um Dan, actually.
• 26:33
  SPEAKER_01: Her name's a lot of.
• 26:34
SPEAKER_01: Oh, Make Up by Rossi.
• 26:35
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 26:36
SPEAKER_00: I just always call her Make Up by Rossi, isn't that?
• 26:38
  SPEAKER_00: Makeup by Rossi.
• 26:39
SPEAKER_00: I call everyone their Instagram names.
• 26:41
SPEAKER_00: And for ages, I didn't know that that was her name.
• 26:45
SPEAKER_00: I just called her Make Up by Rossi.
• 26:47
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 26:47
  SPEAKER_00: Sorry, keep going.
• 26:48
  SPEAKER_00: We love her.
• 26:49
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 26:50
SPEAKER_01: Well, she we have also grown up together since primary school.
• 26:54
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 26:54
SPEAKER_01: She's a work colleague as well of mine.
• 26:56
SPEAKER_01: So she works for Kimberly Care Group also.
• 26:58
SPEAKER_01: She's does makeup by Rossi.
• 27:00
  SPEAKER_01: She's a mum of three.
• 27:02
  SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
• 27:02
  SPEAKER_01: She's just amazing.
• 27:03
SPEAKER_01: She is, she's got boys too.
• 27:05
  SPEAKER_01: Three boys.
• 27:06
SPEAKER_01: I juggle what I am, you know, with my art, but I am not a mum yet.
• 27:10
SPEAKER_01: And I sometimes will look at her, she's doing, you know, full-time work.
• 27:13
