- 1:09Speaker 2: Go insane at Insane Seafood Market, Highway 64 in Columbia.
- 1:16Speaker 1: All right, let's get right down to business, and I can tell you that offshore fishing was at a stand still.
- 1:20Speaker 1: It blew most of the weekend from different directions but not hearing anything going on offshore over the weekend.
- 1:27Speaker 1: There are some tuna in the area now yellow fins, black fins and still blue fins around, especially up off Oregon Inlet but the crowd out there fishing for them has been non-existent.
- 1:37Speaker 1: They're just out there frolicking and jumping all over the place saying where are the fishermen?
- 1:41Speaker 1: Well, that's not really what they're saying, but that's what's going on.
- 1:44Speaker 1: So not much to report.
- 1:45Speaker 1: The table is set for some good spring fishing as we get into the middle of March here Now.
- 1:52Speaker 1: In addition to that, though, which is not much to brag about or to write home about, in the surf there has been some fishing.
- 2:00Speaker 1: On Saturday, a pretty good puppy drum bite down on Hatteras Island, mostly exclusively puppy drum, but hey, everybody, I'll take that.
- 2:08Speaker 1: There are a few sharks out there still to be caught and you're going to run into those most any time of the year.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So you got that going on.
- 2:15Speaker 1: A few skates, some other trash fish, but you do have those puppy drum in the surf catches as well.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Alright, in shore fishing.
- 2:23Speaker 1: That's where the action is Nice bite on puppy drum, especially for charter boats fishing back at Hatteras they just did really well over the weekend For easy conditions.
- 2:32Speaker 1: They can seem to always find a lead to get in Short trips, half day trips, easy on the family and good fishing right now.
- 2:39Speaker 1: So maybe inquire at any of our major marinas about booking an inshore boat Usually two people's ideal or three Four's pushing in a little bit, but it's like a guided bonefish trip in the Florida Keys.
- 2:50Speaker 1: It's kind of how that works.
- 2:52Speaker 1: So down lower end of the sound seems to be better.
- 2:55Speaker 1: The speckle trout bite is on in good fashion on the northern end and the western side of the sound of the Pamico that is, and the fish seem to be getting bigger.
- 3:04Speaker 1: That's one thing I've noticed.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I'm seeing some three and four pounders now and a lot of that is out on your boat or with a friend on his boat.
- 3:12Speaker 1: However, you want to do that A little bit of fishing off the banks and on some of the ditches if you can get access to them, but mostly boat fishing, and I want to, like I do every year this time of year, and this has nothing to do with the tragedy that we suffered a week ago in Oregon Inlet with the loss of two very good friends of mine.
- 3:28Speaker 1: But if you're trout fishing in the sound think about this for a minute Now you will go and spend uh, $150 in the blink of an eye on a good trout rig, a speckle trout rig.
- 3:41Speaker 1: You might even have a custom rod built for that.
- 3:44Speaker 1: If you're really a connoisseur, you spend a couple hundred dollars on that as well, but you don't blink an eye.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's been in three or four hundred dollars on a single fishing rod.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Yet people get out there in the sound in the dead of winter and they have no survival gear on their boat.
- 3:58Speaker 1: No Mustang suit, no survival suit.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Many of them have not filed a float plan, not with the Coast Guard, but with anybody to let them know like a wife or somebody like that know where you're at and when you're going to be back.
- 4:10Speaker 1: That's who you file your float plan with.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Now my point is a good survival suit, maybe $250 less than the cost of a good speckle trout rod?
- 4:20Speaker 1: Really no reason you should be out in 45 degree water without a survival suit on your boat.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It could be the difference between life and death and again, I talk about this a lot in the spring because you get a couple warm days and people think we're good to go.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But it may be sunny, that water temperature is still very, very cold, so please keep that in mind.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Finally, we get left with the crappie fishing.
- 4:40Speaker 1: That's uh, I don't know.
- 4:42Speaker 1: That sounds like it's a very good crappie fishing.
- 4:45Speaker 1: If that's an oxymoron, I apologize, but the crappie fishing is pretty good, most of that done, and some bedding areas around, like Manamaskede, are on highway 64 going over towards Columbia from the beaches.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So if you're into that kind of thing and get a nice warm day, maybe you'll get some.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Uh, get a crappie, one of the best eating fish.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I've never tried them, but everyone tells me they're one of the best eating fish that you can catch in fresh or salt water.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So that's all your opportunity on the fishing front.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Uh, we'll keep you posted.
- 5:12Speaker 1: If anything changes.
- 5:13Speaker 1: We'll have another report up for you mid-week to tell you what's going on.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Good luck fishing.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Go with a line you're not going to catch them in the motel room.
