- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in everybody to the Talking Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: I'm doing a okay, my man.
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: Just happy to be here talking about some tech sports and talking about some playoff expansion.
- 1:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:03SPEAKER_05: We hopped on with Guns Up Nation's Andrew McCleary, had a great conversation with him.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: We'll show you all that later on in the episode.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: But we got to get to a few things to start off.
- 1:13SPEAKER_05: Uh, our track team, always great, women's track, fantastic.
- 1:18SPEAKER_05: Ruth Osorro, NCAA national champion in the triple jump, now for both the indoor and the outdoor championships.
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: Uh man, tech track.
- 1:30SPEAKER_05: We we can't say enough about it.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: And Ruth Osorro is elite.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: You know, when Coach Adams gets on Twitter to talk about you, you made it big because that man's on there once a month.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: So, Ruth, maybe.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: You made it, but seriously, congrats.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: You're really carrying the banner for us this track season.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: Um, because she's definitely the standard, and we we only want the best with this new power on the plane.
- 1:54SPEAKER_04: So congrats to Ruth.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: What an accomplishment for a young lady.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: She jumped 14.19 meters on a triple jump.
- 2:02SPEAKER_05: Uh oh.
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: I can't even fathom jumping that far.
- 2:07SPEAKER_05: What's that in freedom units?
- 2:10SPEAKER_05: I don't know, dude.
- 2:11SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: What is it?
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: Like three feet to a few.
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: I don't know, man.
- 2:16SPEAKER_05: I don't, I don't, I don't know meters.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: I'm American.
- 2:20SPEAKER_04: It just it sounds far.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: It's it's because I'm sure it is if it's a if it's national title worthy.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: So that's that's stellar.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:28SPEAKER_05: First female in Texas Tech history to win the triple jump national championship in any environment, and she won it in both the indoor and the outdoor.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: So congrats to her.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: Also, shouts out to Seasons Usual.
- 2:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's her name.
- 2:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, gets the bronze in the discus, first female discus medalist for Texas Tech in over a decade.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: So, shouts out to the two awesome track athletes.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: That's one of the best athlete names I've ever heard of.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: Seasons Usual.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: Seasons Usual.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: You know, it's Seasons Usual, baby.
- 3:01SPEAKER_05: Just track season.
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: Love it.
- 3:03SPEAKER_05: You know, we're out of here.
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: We can't make any more jokes.
- 3:05SPEAKER_05: We're not funny enough for this.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: But seriously, shouts out to them.
- 3:10SPEAKER_05: They're awesome.
- 3:11SPEAKER_05: Uh, they keep kicking butt.
- 3:12SPEAKER_05: So let's move on because Dave Campbell, Texas, what is it, monthly or weekly?
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: Dave Campbell's Texas football.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 3:22SPEAKER_05: Dave Campbell's Texas football gave Texas Tech some major, major preseason love in their what was it?
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: Just like uh preseason rankings, first team, second team rankings going into the year.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, five players named two their preseason teams.
- 3:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, uh, just a lot of love from Dave Campbell's.
- 3:44SPEAKER_05: Heck yeah, man.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: Che Hondi, Jay Raja, one of a fan of the pod, uh a friend of the pod, I would say, because Steve and I have taken pictures with him before.
- 3:51SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 3:52SPEAKER_05: He's probably and he's liked our stuff before.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: He has.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: Well, let's just say he's a fan of the podcast and also a friend of the podcast.
- 4:00SPEAKER_04: He doesn't follow either of us, but he's a friend.
- 4:03SPEAKER_04: No, I mean this this guy puts out seller work, so I I try I trust his opinion on what's coming up completely.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: And he gave us what is probably the most coveted spot on these kinds of lists, and that's the quarterback.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: Tyler Shuck got a quarterback nod as best quarterback in the entire state of Texas, top down from FBS FCS.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: So that's that's incredible.
- 4:25SPEAKER_05: And I know Kellen Mond and I know Sam Ellinger are both gone, which probably would have been named above because just for their returning things.
- 4:33SPEAKER_05: But to be to have Tyler Shuck come in here and be named immediately over the UT quarterback, the AM quarterback, this is of course only Texas teams that they're taking into account.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: But the Baylor quarterback supposedly getting a lot of love.
- 4:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, TCU may put out a good quarterback here, but for Tyler Shuck to be just yeah, Duggan, whatever, he was what he runs the ball pretty well, but that's about it.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's a runner.
- 4:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but so Tyler Shuck being named, I mean, preseason first team overall quarterback is is absolutely impressive.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: And we also had guys like Eric Azukama being named to this list, Dawson Deaton, Colin Schooler, and our boy, true friend of the pod, Austin McNamara, all-American punter, also named.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: So we get five guys named to this Texas preseason college football list.
- 5:21SPEAKER_05: I mean, a lot of hype going on, man.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: For sure, man.
- 5:25SPEAKER_04: And I I loved his reasoning behind all of them.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: And uh obviously the most controversial one, back to Tyler, real quick, is uh Shaehan's reasoning was that he was able to bring Oregon to a Pac-12 title game.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: And he was he Shaehan thinks he'll kind of restricted in his gameplay because he just thinks that's how Oregon plays, you know, that's just their offense.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: So he's really excited to see him be let loose a little bit in a Texas Tech more pass-friendly offense.
- 5:51SPEAKER_04: And the guys, the the guys in the office at Dave Campbell seem to have a lot of faith behind him.
- 5:55SPEAKER_04: Um, so I'm really excited.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: I'm really excited to be excited about the quarterback position at Texas Tech because it's just it's such a signature position for us.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: I know that sounds so generic to say for your favorite Texas Tech team.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: We're like, oh, we're you know, everything it's all about the quarterback, but I mean at Texas Tech, it's it's the absolute truth.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man.
- 6:13SPEAKER_05: And I think we can't discredit the fact that the Pac-12 had such a wacky year.
- 6:17SPEAKER_05: And I mean, everybody had a wacky year last year, but the Pac-12 was the last to decide to play.
- 6:23SPEAKER_05: So they only played what, seven games or whatever.
- 6:25SPEAKER_05: So it's tough, no spring ball, everything like that.
- 6:28SPEAKER_05: You can't really blame Tyler Shuck for not really, you know, coming in and being as elite as he could have been.
- 6:34SPEAKER_05: So I'm really excited for his talent that he's bringing.
- 6:36SPEAKER_05: Uh, get Sonny Cumby in here to teach him his quarterback ways because of course he was a fantastic QB when he was at Texas Tech.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: So, Tyler Shuck, man, the hype is real.
- 6:46SPEAKER_05: We're ready for football season.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: I know it's a couple months away, but dude, we're we're hyped already.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: I'm not no shock at all with Eric Izikama.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, the guy is a Texas Tech wide receiver through and through.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: I really hope he's healing up well because I want him so bad.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: You know, that should I would love to have him in the Houston game, but if we can have him back by the time the Big 12 rolls around, I feel like our offense is gonna be firing.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: Well, and by the way, Matt Wells gave a little bit of an update, not really much, basically saying for both Sirajic Thompson and Eric Ezukama that they're gonna be reevaluated, and then we'll know by August whether or not they're ready for the Houston game.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: But Eric Azukama is already catching footballs again, so that's really good for having that broken arm.
- 7:29SPEAKER_05: You know, like we said when it first happened, it was like a six to 12 week injury, and we had like four months to recover from it.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: So I imagine Ezukama's ready for that Houston game, but uh yeah, I mean, just excited for him.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: He's he's in my opinion, and I think a lot of people's opinion, the best returning wide receiver in the Big 12.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: That says a lot in the Big 12.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: So I I like hearing that, and I hope his arm is healing up as well as it can because we're gonna need him.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: Um, so just hitting all of our guys, give everybody some love here.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: Some Dawson Deaton here.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: I like seeing an offensive lineman on this on this list.
- 8:03SPEAKER_04: You know, it's not a sexy position, it's not something you talk about, but I like seeing some of an experienced guy get some statewide recognition because uh it's kind of a shaky position.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: Like looking forward in our future to the season right now, it's probably one of the bigger question marks.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: It's the biggest question mark, in my opinion.
- 8:21SPEAKER_05: I mean, uh we lose Jack Anderson, and really nobody else showed out in in an impressive way last year.
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: And yes, of course, COVID year, it was whacked up, no spring ball, everything like that.
- 8:32SPEAKER_05: We have a full spring ball in place.
- 8:34SPEAKER_05: We have a lot of returners on that offensive line, and Dawson Deaton's gonna be the main guy to look out for.
- 8:40SPEAKER_05: Um, and and man, it's such an important position.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: I know it's not, like you said, it's not a sexy position, but it's the position that you really need to perform, play in and play out.
- 8:50SPEAKER_05: So uh shouts out to him, man.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, hopefully the O-line gets it together.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, if we want all these offensive weapons we're talking about to play well, it starts at the O-line.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: So I really hope it shows out this year because we got something special if it does.
- 9:02SPEAKER_04: Um, all right, moving to the defense real quick.
- 9:05SPEAKER_04: Colin Schooler.
- 9:06SPEAKER_04: I don't think anyone is surprised about that one because I'm sure everything pops in our head right now of Schooler just smashing Baylor's QB right at the one lot yard line and saving the game.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: And I I cannot wait to see what this already stud brings in his final season.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: I was about to say the number one guy who probably put Colin Schooler on this list was Charlie Brewer because that dude got smacked last season.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: It was awesome to see.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: Colin Schooler is a fantastic player going into his fifth, I believe, fifth or sixth season of college football.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: So bringing the most experience possible, you could have using his COVID year to play another year.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: Just awesome news.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: Schooler smashed uh Brewer into the transfer portal.
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: That's how bad it was.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: He tried smashed him all the way over to Utah.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: So that he's he's definitely the uh the guy to be looking for on that live making packing core that's already pretty deep.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: So I'm really excited about that one.
- 10:03SPEAKER_04: And like you already said this, Austin smacked the Mara.
- 10:07SPEAKER_04: That one was probably an automatic.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: That had to have been one of the easiest positions, positions to just plug in for this article.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: Uh dude, he's gonna be on preseason all NCAA teams.
- 10:16SPEAKER_05: Like he's he's such a good punter, week in, week out.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: He provides the best.
- 10:20SPEAKER_05: It's stupid what this guy brings to Texas Tech.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: He's he's awesome, and hopefully we won't have to use him that much.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, Tyler Shuck, let's let's get it going, let's score some points and not have to punt so much like last season.
- 10:34SPEAKER_05: But having a guy in the back, a punter is such an underrated position to have in college football.
- 10:40SPEAKER_05: It puts the other teams at a disadvantage if you can get them inside the 10, inside the five.
- 10:45SPEAKER_05: So having that good of a punter coming back to your team, uh truly a guy who's going to be on an NFL roster one day.
- 10:51SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 10:52SPEAKER_04: It's it's he's kind of like an uncommon, weird discussion to have that you could say your punter is the best player on the team, and it's like not even a knock on the rest of the team.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: Like it's just it's a very bizarre situation because this kid is questionably the best in the country.
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: So that's awesome.
- 11:07SPEAKER_04: We love the guy, and uh, I hope we can have him for a couple more years.
- 11:10SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's only a junior, but uh I'm sure NFL teams will start uh squeaking in his ear soon.
- 11:15SPEAKER_05: We'll see how the season goes when it comes to that kind of stuff.
- 11:19SPEAKER_05: But I mean, really, all these guys deserve to be on this list.
- 11:22SPEAKER_05: I actually think we had a snub, and I think it's because he was hurt, but Rico Jeffers is coming back to this team, and he is an elite linebacker.
- 11:31SPEAKER_05: And yes, he got hurt, he was held out of spring ball, held out for a lot of summer, but he's gonna come back and he's a leader, and he is such a good player to come back to this team and only adds to this linebacking core, having the combo of Schooler and Rico Jeffers sprinkle in some Krishan Merriweather, get some Brandon Randall in there, dude.
- 11:50SPEAKER_05: Our linebacking core, I cannot say enough.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: When we do our preseason, like it's a given that the linebacking core is going to be the the core to watch.
- 11:58SPEAKER_04: Dude, I was just about to say, just reaching the hat with our linebackers.
- 12:01SPEAKER_04: You know, I I I obviously just given the nod to Colin Schooler because just the spectacular sports interplays he did, but uh this this linebacking core is no joke.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: So I'm really excited to see how that defense short shapes up.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: But before we move past this, we have guys on the second team too.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: So and the guy on the second team is another O-lineman, it is TJ Stormans.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 12:26SPEAKER_04: I forgot about TJ, man.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: That's such a good ad.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: It was, man, out of TCU.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: What a spectacular ad.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: The guy was all Big 12.
- 12:34SPEAKER_04: So I cannot wait to just see what we can do to patch together this O-line.
- 12:40SPEAKER_04: And I dude, I'm I'm getting a little excited about football here.
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: It's it's I feel like we're gonna be a little sneaky good.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: I really, really do.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: The excitement is brewing, and that could be very bad, or it could be very good.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: We'll just have to see.
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, obviously, we need our team to get healthy.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: So, Sir Roderick, Eric Ezekama.
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, hopefully everything everything goes well with treatment and everything.
- 13:03SPEAKER_05: Get y'all on the field, get ready for Houston.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: So we have all our team.
- 13:06SPEAKER_05: But man, there's no denying the talent on this team.
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: It's just Matt Wells needs to get it together.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: And having a different offensive coordinator in here, Keith Patterson returning, who did a great job last year.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, but Matt Wells has to prove it, and this is going to be the year to do it.
- 13:20SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 13:21SPEAKER_04: And you have you have what's probably the most esteemed Texas publication in the state, uh, giving us this much love.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: We're number two in total mentions on this list.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech is number two.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: Um, I mean, it's just it's it's nuts.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm that shocks me because of the way we've been performing.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: So I really hope that this is this talent juices us up and gives us a good uh season here because all we all the only team we're trailing is AM and they had a historic season.
- 13:49SPEAKER_04: So I I really, really hope this is this just adds up to sneaky good.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: So thank you so much, uh, Shaehan.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: Maybe we can get you on the podcast one day.
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: You are a friend and fan of the pod.
- 13:59SPEAKER_04: We know it.
- 14:00SPEAKER_05: Right on.
- 14:01SPEAKER_05: All right, let's move on.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: We have one more before we get to Andrew and talking college football playoff.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: We got another basketball commit and a really, really good one.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: Arguably the best transfer we've gotten yet.
- 14:14SPEAKER_05: Bryson Williams from UTEP has committed to Texas Tech to play for the Red Raiders for his final season of college basketball.
- 14:22SPEAKER_05: Dude, such a good pickup.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: I was so excited when this guy finally announced his commitment because he announced he was going into the transfer portal a long time ago.
- 14:32SPEAKER_05: And I know Texas Tech was in his sphere.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: It was always he went and visited.
- 14:36SPEAKER_05: He was hearing from Mark Adams pretty much since day one.
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: And dude, just such a good get to get another big guy, six foot nine, adds everything to this team.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: He woke up a couple days ago and said, you know what?
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: I really like West Texas.
- 14:52SPEAKER_04: I think I'll hang her around.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: But just seriously, you know, this this is really silencing a lot of doubt.
- 14:59SPEAKER_04: People worried about, like, oh, maybe Coach Adams can't recruit, you know, maybe he's too old to stay connected to these guys.
- 15:04SPEAKER_04: And here he just he keeps coming up with these sneaky wins.
- 15:07SPEAKER_04: Um, and man, it just this this basketball season is looking more, and you and I talked about this yesterday, it's looking more and more like a reload.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: And even though you said you never thought it was gonna be a rebuild, but I think fan, like you said yesterday, I think fans can really look forward to the season.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: I think we'll be competitive and and not just like a friendly, you know, like you know, the friendly way to say you'll be okay competitive.
- 15:29SPEAKER_04: I mean like competitive, competitive, talk with the top top half of the Big 12 competitive.
- 15:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I mean it this offseason isn't even over yet.
- 15:36SPEAKER_05: We have two, I think two available scholarships.
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: This is like the most asked question in Texas Tech basketball Twitter right now is how many scholarships do we have left open?
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: I think it's either three or two, depending on if we give one to Ethan Duncan.
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: But Bryson Williams is gonna be a day one starter, dude.
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: He is that good and he's got the experience.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, some people are saying he may uh he may take the center or the five position and send Marcus Santos Silva to the bench.
- 16:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, I really don't know.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: If I were guessing probably day one starting lineup, I do Malik Wilson, uh, one of Davion Warren or Siddhar Calhoun, Kevin McCullough, Santos Silva, and Bryson Williams.
- 16:20SPEAKER_05: I think I I mean uh this team really is stacked, and it's a good problem to have when you're starting to talk about uh guys potentially taking the sparting starting spot over another really good player.
- 16:31SPEAKER_04: So is this the first transfer you feel really confident in saying he's a day one starter?
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I was pretty confident in Davion Warren being a day one starter.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: Um, and then a lot of people are high on Sidar Calhoun as well from Florida State.
- 16:43SPEAKER_05: So we'll just have to see what Mark Adams goes as the offseason progresses.
- 16:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, I also think it's gonna be, I think Malik Wilson will get that point guard nod uh over Clarence Nedolney.
- 16:53SPEAKER_05: Again, yet to see Clarence has been with the team for a while now.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: Mark Adams loves him, he always puts his heart out there.
- 16:59SPEAKER_05: So uh, but Bryson Williams, because of his position, I think, is what puts him out as an automatic day one starter.
- 17:06SPEAKER_04: I'm really excited to have him.
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: I think any guy we recruit into a coach Adams team is the right kind of guy because I feel like that kind of staff want to mess around with an egotistical guy or anything like that.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: So I'm really excited to see what these players bring to the Texas Tech program because the foundation has been laid and all we can do is just build up on it.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: Um, so Steven.
- 17:25SPEAKER_04: Please, please look into your crystal ball and tell us what we're all waiting for.
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: What is TJ Shannon gonna do?
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: Dude, uh I I am as clueless as everybody when it comes to Terrence Shannon.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: Uh, we've said this multiple times.
- 17:41SPEAKER_05: Terrence Shannon needs to do what's best for him.
- 17:43SPEAKER_05: Uh, he needs if if he's gonna get that projection and a lot of teams are looking at him in the NBA, go get your money, man.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: If you're gonna be a first-round pick, go get him.
- 17:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, if you I I would I would say if you're gonna be like a mid-second round pick, and nobody really knows this, but if if you're gonna be like, I don't don't do what Jamias Ramsey did, in my opinion.
- 18:03SPEAKER_05: You know, go out there, get you need some locks that you're gonna be kind of in at least the 20 to to 35 range of the NBA draft.
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: But if Terrence Shannon does come back to this team, we're gonna be stupid good.
- 18:20SPEAKER_05: And we're not even talking about if we could potentially get even Kevin Samuel from TCU.
- 18:26SPEAKER_05: I know people have been, he's been looking at tech, we've been looking at him, he's another big guy that we're talking about.
- 18:31SPEAKER_05: But adding either of those guys would be such a massive get for us.
- 18:35SPEAKER_05: Uh, and and of course, Terrence Shannon being uh what would a what will be if he does decide to return his third season with Texas Tech under Mark Adams.
- 18:45SPEAKER_05: And he's he's gonna be elite, man.
- 18:46SPEAKER_05: He's gonna be dynamic.
- 18:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, I hope he comes back from a selfish standpoint, from a Texas Tech being you know, fan standpoint.
- 18:54SPEAKER_05: But I I obviously want the best for TJ.
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: Oh, me too, man.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: I think we I think we all do.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: It's just it makes you kind of get a little giddy whenever you see all the players at him.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: You know, they're always adding him on Twitter, like, oh, what's what's going on, TJ?
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: What you doing, buddy?
- 19:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: So obviously he'll go get the bag and go bring Texas Tech some NBA fame if you can.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: But uh man, I just I like to daydream about the ultimate bounce back there ever was.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: God, if Terrence Shannon comes back, that'll be a stupid good lineup because Kevin McCullough's gonna take that leap that we need him to.
- 19:26SPEAKER_05: We have Agbo coming back, who's I I mean, he's gonna be awesome.
- 19:31SPEAKER_05: Dude, this is so exciting.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: I'm so excited to be.
- 19:34SPEAKER_05: Uh we were so down in the dumps at one point in this offseason.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: And to be where we are now, it shows what Mark Adams is doing.
- 19:43SPEAKER_05: It shows the staff that he's brought in.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: It's just such a good feeling to be a Red Raider basketball fan, even after losing Chris Beard.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: And honestly, I've muted him on Twitter.
- 19:52SPEAKER_05: I don't even want to hear from him anymore.
- 19:54SPEAKER_05: I really, I really am getting to the point where I just don't care.
- 19:57SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't care because dude's a snake, he's completely changed his mindset, his mentality, everything.
- 20:03SPEAKER_05: I really don't care.
- 20:04SPEAKER_05: This is Coach Adams' team now, this is Texas Tech, this is not Chris Beard anymore.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: It's completely different.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: Like, I mean, the the players and the culture that the players made is there, but this is Coach Adams' team, man, and this is his program, and I think it's gonna be his program for the next five to ten years.
- 20:21SPEAKER_04: So I'm very excited to see about uh how he develops this year and goes forward.
- 20:25SPEAKER_04: So um, hopefully, this is just the beginning of something very, very special, even more special than we saw before.
- 20:31SPEAKER_04: So, man, I can I can't believe that even after football season, we'll still be excited about basketball season.
- 20:36SPEAKER_04: It's a great feeling.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it is.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: It's a great feeling.
- 20:39SPEAKER_05: Just a couple more tidbits on Bryson Williams before we get to our interview with Andrew McCleary.
- 20:44SPEAKER_05: Uh, and it wasn't really an interview, it's more of a discussion.
- 20:47SPEAKER_05: We're talking college football playoff.
- 20:49SPEAKER_05: But Bryson Williams played Kansas last year with UTEP, a uh put up 23 and 13 against the Kansas Jayhawks.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: So he has that experience with Big 12 teams, and he performed at the highest level.
- 21:02SPEAKER_05: And he chose us over Texas, which is such a big thing for Texas Tech.
- 21:09SPEAKER_05: This is really the first time that Chris Beard and Mark Adams went head to head on a recruit, and Mark Adams wins.
- 21:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, it it is it's so big.
- 21:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, our guy Ryan Mainville on Twitter put out uh a little tidbit.
- 21:23SPEAKER_05: He uh Bryson Williams has has been coached under this guy named Rodney Terry for the last four seasons, basically all of his college career.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: And Rodney Terry just went to Texas this offseason and he decided not to follow him for the first time in his college career.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: We broke a pattern to get him here.
- 21:40SPEAKER_05: So this is such a big pickup for Texas Tech.
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: Oh, I guess uh Coach Adams can recruit.
- 21:45SPEAKER_04: And I I mean I it's also a testament to the to the guys he brought in.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: I think this coaching staff is spectacular.
- 21:51SPEAKER_04: Their presence in the in the Lubba community on Twitter is awesome.
- 21:54SPEAKER_04: I I just feel like we're all still so connected to the program, maybe even more so than we were before.
- 21:59SPEAKER_04: And I mean, of course, if you had to ask a UT fan, I guess they didn't really want them, right?
- 22:03SPEAKER_04: So Yeah.
- 22:04SPEAKER_05: I guess they're waiting on the other guy, but that's just UT fans being UT fans, man.
- 22:10SPEAKER_05: So I don't know, man.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: Did you have anything else before we get to some college football playoff team?
- 22:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we would we would be doing the listeners and the program a disjustice if we didn't discuss um officially in the offseason.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: Yes, we are.
- 22:25SPEAKER_05: I forgot.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: I totally forgot.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: I had it out in my brain and you brought it back.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: So thanks a lot, man.
- 22:29SPEAKER_04: But I know it's just it's a defense mechanism.
- 22:32SPEAKER_05: Yes, it is.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: But Texas Tech Baseball loses in the super regional to Stanford.
- 22:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, just not our weekend, man.
- 22:38SPEAKER_05: We just uh could not find the hitting.
- 22:41SPEAKER_05: Our pitching kind of faltered uh well, really faltered a lot.
- 22:45SPEAKER_05: Uh and Stanford brought it, man.
- 22:47SPEAKER_05: Credit to them.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: They really they really played great.
- 22:49SPEAKER_05: They had two unbelievable pitchers come out there and have some unbelievable games.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: I mean, 13 strikeouts for the first guy, and I think 12 strikeouts for the next guy.
- 22:59SPEAKER_05: Um Stanford brought it, and we we really couldn't.
- 23:03SPEAKER_05: And we had some we had some things beaten up against us.
- 23:06SPEAKER_05: Cal Connolly was kind of out in that second game for a little bit.
- 23:09SPEAKER_05: He was kind of uh going in and out of like some stomach virus sort of thing.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: But uh proud of this team no matter what, man.
- 23:16SPEAKER_05: Tim Tadlock, this is one of his most impressive coaching performances of all season with all of our injuries and all the adversity this team went through to still make a super regional.
- 23:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's it's impressive and to host a super regional.
- 23:29SPEAKER_05: So uh proud of our guys no matter what, but uh just tough loss.
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: I I think this is an important time to remember that it was a fantastic season full of gritty young men that really pushed through, even with all the injury issues and all that.
- 23:43SPEAKER_04: Uh, we we are we don't want to sound like spoiled fans where we complain about being heartbroken over this.
- 23:49SPEAKER_04: Um that's a sign of becoming a powerhouse where this is a disappointing end.
- 23:54SPEAKER_04: But you just gotta remember you gotta smell the roses because hardly any teams are watching their their program on the television the other day, and hardly any could say that they were hosting the regional.
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: Being swept stinks.
- 24:04SPEAKER_04: Our batters did not come to didn't wake up both mornings, and pitching really kind of let us down.
- 24:10SPEAKER_04: But those Stanford batters were hot, and man, those those pitching hands on the on the cardinal were spectacular as well.
- 24:15SPEAKER_04: Um, but man, great season, like you said.
- 24:17SPEAKER_04: Tim Tadlock is a mastermind of of a skipper, and we just got to remember that this this program has got a lot to look forward to, and maybe next year we'll actually have a full healthy team.
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: Guys, we have an elite baseball program, and as long as Tim Tadlock is at the helm, I am excited and happy for the future.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: So uh shout out baseball team, you know, uh great season overall.
- 24:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, but we'll get them next year.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 24:45SPEAKER_04: Go any team that's playing UT in the in the CWS.
- 24:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 24:49SPEAKER_05: Beat anybody, beat UT, please.
- 24:52SPEAKER_04: And and even number one Arkansas is a go in the college world series.
- 24:55SPEAKER_04: So that's what happens.
- 24:56SPEAKER_04: This is baseball, it's a weird sport.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: College base, NCA March Mandez, you know?
- 25:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man.
- 25:01SPEAKER_05: Any team can lose on any given night.
- 25:03SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, just crazy stuff.
- 25:07SPEAKER_05: We'll get them next year, but we are in full offseason mode, so you'll be getting some wacky stuff from talking tech.
- 25:12SPEAKER_05: We're gonna try to come up with some quality content for y'all as the offseason progresses.
- 25:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, some offseason get you prepared for football season.
- 25:20SPEAKER_05: We'll probably come up with some wacky episodes here.
- 25:23SPEAKER_05: You know us, we're two idiots.
- 25:24SPEAKER_04: Send us your mailbag.
- 25:26SPEAKER_04: That'll that'll mix up for some uh fun episodes.
- 25:28SPEAKER_04: So give us your takes and ask for ours.
- 25:30SPEAKER_04: Let's let's go.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: Please, absolutely.
- 25:32SPEAKER_05: We'll try to get some interviews lined up for y'all.
- 25:34SPEAKER_05: So uh, but we do have a good interviewslash roundtable discussion with Andrew McCleary, talking some college football playoff expansion because that was the biggest news of this past week.
- 25:45SPEAKER_05: So we're gonna swing you on right over to that interview right now.
- 25:50SPEAKER_05: All right, we're here with Guns Up Nations, Andrew McCleary.
- 25:55SPEAKER_05: He is a contributor, staff writer, everything for the Guns Up blog.
- 25:59SPEAKER_05: What's up, Andrew?
- 26:00SPEAKER_05: How you doing, man?
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Doing good, guys.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: I'm super excited to be here tonight, talk to you guys.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: I know it's June, uh, typically a dead period for college football, but we have some some big things to discuss in the world of college football this evening.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: It's officially the offseason, unfortunately, with Texas Tech Baseball going out in the super regional, but that means football is right around the corner.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: So we're ready to talk some CFP expansion, man.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: And you just wrote a great article about it on Guns Up Nation.
- 26:27SPEAKER_05: Go check that out if you haven't yet.
- 26:29SPEAKER_05: Five takeaways from it.
- 26:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, man, I mean, what was what was right in that article?
- 26:33SPEAKER_05: What was kind of what'd you learn really from from all this stuff?
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: Well, so what people need to understand first off is that this this is good for the sport.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Everyone needs to start accepting that this expansion is good for the sport.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: For those who are unfamiliar with the breakdown of how the new 12-team playoff will look, it'll take the six highest ranked conference champions.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: So Big 12, Pac-12, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, doesn't matter.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: If you are ranked the highest conference champion, they take those top six teams and they get seeds one through six.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: And then the last remaining six seeds fill out the 12 teams, and it'll still be a playoff committee who does the seeding ultimately.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: But I got giddy at the idea of seeing playoff games on college campuses, something that we've never experienced at the FBS level, and that that gets me excited.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 27:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, that that's that's the best part about college football in general is the pageantry and the atmosphere, and you lose that in the sterile NFL environments.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: So that's a really cool addition to the playoffs.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: Um, and I really do think it's I agree with you fully.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: I think this is great for the sport.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: I a lot of people are saying this kills the regular season, but I completely disagree.
- 27:50SPEAKER_04: I think it makes the regular season more important in the end.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: So I'm really excited to see how this pans out.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think for the the proponent who might say it kills the regular season, ultimately what it what it does is it just shifts the emphasis on the regular season.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: So your one through four seeds, the the the Alabamas, your Clemsons, the Ohio states of the world who currently dominate the landscape are gonna get into mid-November of the season and pretty much have their spots kind of wrapped up, which is okay.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: So now we shift from kind of the iron bowl having maybe playoff significance for Alabama, it could for Auburn, but now you shift to middle of the road Big 12 games, you shift to middle of the road ACC games where nationally a lot of eyes typically wouldn't be turned.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: But now, if you're talking about, hey, if we get to 10 and two and just miss our conference championship game, we can we can sneak in the back door here and get a chance to go to the playoff, which is huge.
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: And now you've got people watching the the games all over the country now.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: Completely agree.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: I think what's really cool about that, I want to just harp on your point there.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: This isn't gonna affect the Alabamas, the Clemsons, the Oklahomas.
- 29:10SPEAKER_04: This gives the Iowa states, the Floridas, the I mean, I'm I'm not gonna, I don't want to use Florida, uh, the Indiana's, the uh Oregons.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: This gives those teams that are on the cusp of that right out of the outer four a real shine uh shining chance.
- 29:26SPEAKER_04: Because teams like Texas Tech, we have a hard time getting over the Giants of Oklahoma.
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: Same goes in the SEC with Alabama or Ohio State in the Big Ten.
- 29:34SPEAKER_04: It gives those teams that would never get past those teams, or very rarely, uh, a real fighting chance at the title because going completely undefeated is something that very, very few teams can do.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: And that really opens the door for the regular, the regular people like us.
- 29:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man, absolutely.
- 29:50SPEAKER_05: But I I think the real winner here is the G5 because virtually with the four-team playoff, they're getting no chance.
- 29:57SPEAKER_05: And we've seen that, we've seen great teams, UCF and even Cincinnati that got snubbed last year.
- 30:02SPEAKER_05: Uh, those kind of teams are gonna have their chance.
- 30:05SPEAKER_05: And with 12 teams, especially, they're gonna get at least one in you you'd think yearly.
- 30:11SPEAKER_05: Um, unfortunately, I think it also is good for the SEC because uh the SEC was out here, they really wanted 12 and not eight because they want to see their their conference get three to four teams in the college football playoff every season, and that's what's gonna happen with this 12 team set.
- 30:28SPEAKER_05: But um, but you're right about Iowa States and and you know uh Indiana's whatever, the the second group that's just below those blue blood programs in the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, all that kind of stuff.
- 30:40SPEAKER_05: So um I I I love the idea of expansion.
- 30:44SPEAKER_05: I always have, I always thought having five power conferences with four playoff spots was ridiculous.
- 30:50SPEAKER_05: But uh for me especially, I thought eight was the golden number here, and the NCAA proceeded to go to 12.
- 30:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, I don't necessarily agree with 12 over eight.
- 31:00SPEAKER_05: Andrew, what do you think about that?
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: So I it's funny you bring up the SEC.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: It's it should not surprise anybody that this like internal working group that the playoff committee put together had the SEC commissioner on it, as well as the Big 12, the Mountain West, and Notre Dame's AD as well.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: So they had kind of a couple different areas of representation, but the SEC absolutely is a big winner here because they they like to flex their muscles in terms of being the best league in the nation, and this gives them that opportunity.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: Now, in terms of eight teams over 12, that's what I thought only because the NCAA's history, not just in football, but in all sports, has shown they don't progress in a big step.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: There's not kind of this big jump they take, you know, one hurdle ahead of kind of the next jumping off point.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: Um so I was surprised to see 12.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: I I personally think 12 is good for the sport.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: College football in general has a big problem of it being very regionalized right now.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: Um there's there's no secret.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: You look at recruiting rankings, it's predominantly teams in the south heavy.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: And we still get plenty of Big 12 schools in there, but the SEC holds a lot of that footprint, a portion of the Big Ten, portion of the ACC, predominantly Clemson.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: Your your biggest talent year in and year out is going to those areas.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: 14 playoff, just like you mentioned, excludes a Power Five conference automatically right out the gate.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: So you're immediately isolating one-fifth of your biggest college football fan bases off the start.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: So while I think eight seemed kind of the ideal one, what this does now with the 12, just like you mentioned, it gives the group of five more opportunities here.
- 33:00SPEAKER_03: And while one through four probably are still going to be the ones fighting it out for a national championship, because the reality is the number 12th ranked team would have to beat number five, number one, and then probably number two, and then number three, you know, something like that.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: Just not realistic in football.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, it could, we don't know until we start playing.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: I I can understand the the reason for eight, because I used to think eight would be the preservation of the regular season that college football traditionalists really like.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: And I did all in that camp for a long time, but the more I've I've read about it, I think 12 is the way to go to really revitalize the sport nationally.
- 33:42SPEAKER_04: I like I like 12.
- 33:44SPEAKER_04: I think what's cool about 12 is it keeps participation across the country engaged the entire season.
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: If your team is in the top 25, you have a shot at being in the top 12 at the end of the season, really at any point.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: So it what's with what's so great about that, like let that uh that leeway is what's great for the G5 because just this past year two G T G5 teams could have gotten in.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: So it's it really opens the doors for a lot of possibilities and it gives you more interesting games.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: Um, I would rather, I would probably rather watch number 12 versus number five than number eight versus number one.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: I think that's gonna be a more fun game, especially if it's at a uh a home field stadium.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: I just think it'll have a more March Madness feeling, the bigger the pool, but not too big, because what's fun about the college football season is it's high stakes at all times.
- 34:33SPEAKER_04: Um, so but I think 12 is a pretty sweet spot now that I've thought about it.
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: I really like the idea of the top championships, uh the top champion seeding because I'm a huge conference championships matters guy, but I do love the idea of keeping everyone engaged every week, especially if you have a number if you have a number next to your uh team's name.
- 34:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I understand that.
- 34:53SPEAKER_05: And really any expansion was going to be good for me.
- 34:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I was happy with six, eight, ten, twelve, whatever.
- 35:00SPEAKER_05: The thing that 12 versus eight, 12 adds buys.
- 35:04SPEAKER_05: And for me, buys aren't good.
- 35:07SPEAKER_05: I think it could be a negative, actually, for those top dogs.
- 35:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, and playing in a sport like football where you get a week of rest no matter what, it's not it's it's different from playing a baseball game every day or every two days, playing a basketball game every two, three, four days.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: You know, these guys are already rested and honestly could get a little rusty if you're going two weeks between games.
- 35:27SPEAKER_05: So, what it what my logical thinking was with eight over 12 was that you avoid all those buys.
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: And really another thing for me with the eight versus 12 uh was the G five for me.
- 35:42SPEAKER_05: I love I love these programs that come out of nowhere, the smaller programs that don't get a lot of love.
- 35:47SPEAKER_05: I love it when they have a great season like a UCF or like a Cincinnati, all that kind of stuff.
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: But for me, the G5, there is a talent gap, and that needs to not just be brushed off to the side.
- 35:59SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm not like big old, you know, Alabama SEC type guy, but I do not think a G5 team belongs in the playoffs every single year.
- 36:09SPEAKER_05: I just don't.
- 36:09SPEAKER_05: And with 12, it's going to happen.
- 36:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, if you do get a team like a UCF, and I mean I went through it for since 2010.
- 36:19SPEAKER_05: Uh, we had, I think, eight total uh G5 teams finish in the top 12 from these past seasons in the AP poll.
- 36:27SPEAKER_05: That's that's very small, it's a very small number.
- 36:29SPEAKER_05: Um, and the talent gap, the teams they play every year, it's just not matched to the power five.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: No, I and I I totally get that because the the idea being is that the the group of five teams on any given Saturday, especially in a playoff, can elevate and beat a power five team, without a doubt.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: But the biggest knock on the the D5 leagues is that their week in, week out schedule that they're dealing with is not nearly as robust as a power five conference.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: So I I totally understand that aspect.
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: Um, and to your point, um, you know, college football is seeing a level of dominance at the very top that quite frankly, college football has never seen before.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna go through a couple stats here, a little hat tip.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: Uh gentleman's name is Matt Brown.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: He's a he's a writer for the athletic.
- 37:24SPEAKER_03: Just I want you guys to just kind of think about what these stats are.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: Two teams that have spent the most time ranked in the AP top five in a five-year period are Alabama from 2016 to 2020 at 96.3% of the polls, and simultaneously, Clemson from 2016 to 2020 at the exact same clip at 96.3.
- 37:51SPEAKER_03: So you're talking about two programs for the last five seasons who have an absolute stranglehold at the very top.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: What that creates, and it's shown in the NFL draft, is all of your talent goes to these schools and it's getting developed.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: And if you're a four-star, especially five-star recruit, typically your number one priority is how can you develop me to get into the NFL?
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: And more so, how can you develop me to be a first-round draft pick?
- 38:23SPEAKER_03: So these top programs are going to continue to get that talent.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: Now, an expanded playoff, for me, I think what happens is now instead of saying let's take let's take the offensive line position at Alabama, for example, they run five stars across the starting line, four stars, second string is probably a starting lineup in itself that will start at 10, you know, maybe everywhere except 10 to 12 programs in the country.
- 38:52SPEAKER_03: That's their backups.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: But now, if you start giving the opportunity to some of these players to reach it to play big time, meaningful games, now you're not gonna cut major numbers from these programs because the gravy's made itself.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: Nick Saban, he's Thanos, he's inevitable, he's produced first rounders, he's setting records every year.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: That's not gonna change.
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: But if you get one guy from Alabama to say, go to uh you know another SEC school, for example, maybe goes to Mississippi State instead, because the pirate down there in the plains of Starkville has them on the up and coming.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: Now the dominoes start to fall and the talent gap spreads out a little bit.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: How much that trickles down to the G five?
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: It's still going to be a case of the have and have nots, but there's gonna be more talent that does get spread out to those G five schools.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: So I think ultimately it rises the floor for everybody to include the group of five.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 39:52SPEAKER_04: I think uh I think the the sales pitch is given to a boatload more schools if this had when this happens, because uh right now, what five, maybe six schools get to tell you that we will be in the playoff.
- 40:04SPEAKER_04: Not a hope, and no, it's it's inevitable, like you were saying.
- 40:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, whenever you expand that, you get 12 teams that can make that pitch, uh at least in that year.
- 40:13SPEAKER_04: So it we can really bring a recruit and say, hey, you don't necessarily have to go be on the second string of Alabama to get those eyeballs to be on primetime TV at the end of the season.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: You can come to UCF, you can come to Central Florida and be our starter and maybe make something magic happen here in the postseason.
- 40:30SPEAKER_04: And I think that's what's gonna be so fun.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: I think the timeline, these these storylines are gonna get way more fun with more of these tickets being punched because it it opens up viewership of fans that were never there before.
- 40:44SPEAKER_04: And I I just think the possibilities grow immensely with this 12-team playoff, like you were saying, it increases the parity because players will start looking at other programs rather than just the mountaintops if they want to get more playing time.
- 40:55SPEAKER_04: So I I love that.
- 40:56SPEAKER_04: And uh, I'm sure Steven, you have thoughts on it as well.
- 40:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's no doubt that the more prominent, the more big time games that your team plays in, the more eyes that you have on your program.
- 41:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, and the more wins you get, the better recruiting you get.
- 41:11SPEAKER_05: That that is across all sports.
- 41:13SPEAKER_05: Um, I I I again with the 12 team and the eight team, I I I think you get that in both of those.
- 41:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, 12 team, uh, probably a few more, you know.
- 41:23SPEAKER_05: You get those USCs and maybe the and USC is probably a bad example, but those uh, you know, Indiana's and yeah, yeah, not these days.
- 41:31SPEAKER_05: So uh but you you would get that same thing with the eight and the 12, I think.
- 41:35SPEAKER_05: Uh with that eight team being, you know, probably cuts off from top 25 to top 15 schools or whatever, you know, you wanna you want to say, but um, yeah, there's no there's only truth to what you said with more schools being in the mix, the better, the more parity that college football is gonna bring, because right now it's really bad and it's gotten to a point to where it's the same four teams, honestly, every single year.
- 42:00SPEAKER_05: You're expecting Bama, you're expecting Clemson, Ohio State, maybe in OU, maybe in Oregon here or there.
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: But um yeah, I I think I think everything you said was was right on the money with that.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I, you know, uh just another example of how top heavy it's been in the past five seasons.
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: 22 teams have appeared, just appeared in the AP top five at any point, which is down from 33 total teams just a decade ago.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: So again, we are as top heavy as it gets in the sport.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: And I I mean, I do think if we're talking gaps currently, one through four is an echelon of its own.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: And in this situation, five through twelve, the the gaps between five through twelve are so much smaller.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: And even in in an eight-team scenario, the gap between say five through eight would be similar if you stretch it out to four teams.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: So I do understand that kind of component of it.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: I will say the the one thing that I'll be interested to see uh when they actually officially put this thing in place, the way it's set up currently is your top four teams do get that buy, and some might view it as a positive, you know, you Stephen, you'd view it as a negative, but they don't get a home playoff game.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: As of right now, the proposal says the quarterfinal games are at bowl game sites, and they're gonna be at bowl game sites throughout.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: If you're really trying to incentivize teams one through four to get to that fourth spot, you got to give them a buy and you've got to give them a home game.
- 43:35SPEAKER_03: And I think it only makes sense that the you know, the five through twelve games and then the quarterfinal games with one through eight are played on campus.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: That just seems to make the most sense.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: The bowl system as a whole is just it's a die, it's it's a dinosaur.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: It's it's not out, it's going to go extinct.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: Um, there's a lot of middlemen that don't need to exist for the conference commissioner.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: In these schools to put on these bowl games.
- 44:02SPEAKER_03: Um, your sub tier games that highlight a lot of the group of five, they're not going anywhere.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: They've never had a play in the playoff year.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: Those will survive.
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: But your your outback bowls, your VRBO bowls, your holiday bowls that have kind of middle tier.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:21SPEAKER_04: I'm trying to see Texas Tech in one of those soon again, okay?
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: Well, now I'd be thrilled to go to one of those right now.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: But those are going to die off.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: Um, I think eventually the money's gonna get so big, they're gonna write a check and just say, hey, you guys can go away now.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: Now, I am in favor if they want to save, say, for the semifinals, every year we got one at the sugar bowl, and every year we got one at say the Orange Bowl, and then we play the national championship at the Rose Bowl every year.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: I'm not the the guy to make that an original thought.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: I've been to the Rose Bowl, I've been to a national championship game there.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: It is the pinnacle of college football, for sure.
- 45:00SPEAKER_03: So I'd be all like, that's what the NCAA needs to do.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: When you think of college baseball, you think of Omaha, college football, let's think of Pasadena, California, and the Roses.
- 45:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and and really the only thing that is stopping the NCA from doing this is the money, because uh having the home college football playoff game, a five through 12 game being hosted at say a UCF, they wouldn't be making as much money as if it were in a bigger stadium, like you know, whatever bowl game you want to name.
- 45:34SPEAKER_05: So that's really the only thing stopping it.
- 45:36SPEAKER_05: Every fan wants a home game, a home playoff game.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: I don't, I don't know, I don't see an argument really against it.
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: And it's just the NCAA being, you know, back to the NCAA uh wanting their money.
- 45:48SPEAKER_05: And uh unfortunately, I think that's that's at least gonna you know stay for a little bit.
- 45:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's talk about the bolt, like what the what's gonna happen to the bulls, real quick.
- 45:57SPEAKER_04: So I love I love what Andrew's saying.
- 45:59SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, obviously bulls are becoming antiquated, especially at that level.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: Um, so here's the way I look at it would you rather see your team in an NY6 bowl or in a playoff?
- 46:12SPEAKER_04: And I think every fan will say playoff win or lose in either of those scenarios.
- 46:18SPEAKER_04: Um, because that's just so much that that's a better recruiting pitch, and that just feels so much better.
- 46:23SPEAKER_04: Because I couldn't go back three years ago and tell you who won the sugar bowl.
- 46:26SPEAKER_04: I really I I can't.
- 46:27SPEAKER_04: Like it's a pretty forgettable thing unless you're a fan, but everyone's gonna remember the playoffs a little better, and it's just for higher stakes.
- 46:34SPEAKER_04: It just it's a more fun postseason than just going to a bowl.
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: Now it not not not not diminishing in the accomplishments with those bowls, but I do think this is a good evolution.
- 46:46SPEAKER_04: And like like Andrew was saying, we can keep the uh the the you know the constellation bowls that we hope to see tech in soon.
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: But for the top of the game, I love the home and homes until you get to the very end, which makes sense to put it at a neutral site game.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I it's it's one of those things where I'm surprised.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: Uh and we'll see, maybe the athletic directors start running to the the table with the the playoff games on on campus.
- 47:12SPEAKER_03: Because if we're now pitching playoff games on campus for potentially two games, you know, if if you're a you know, say, you know, whatever it may be, now you've got buzz from your season ticket holders.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: And just like in professional sports, if you go to the playoffs, it's your season ticket holders who have first access to those to those games.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: So athletic directors have to realize hey, if we're getting these games on campus, now we're talking season ticket sales go up, if season ticket sales go up, now we increase the prices on season ticket sales.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: So that money is gonna keep flowing.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: But to your point about the New Year's Sixth Bowl, we just saw it last year, albeit a kind of a weird year.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: Oklahoma stomped Florida in the cotton bowl because Florida's top four players weren't gonna play in, and you know, it's an exhibition at that point, it's an end-of-the season exhibition.
- 48:09SPEAKER_03: And for teams, especially like in tech's case right now, getting to a bowl game is huge because that's another two weeks of practices.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's really a big that's that's a big factor in terms of development from a program standpoint.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: But for the games themselves, it's not a playoff game.
- 48:28SPEAKER_03: You know, the the the bowl games, they're gonna continue to lose interest outside of your diehards.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: I I mean, I've watched every bowl game on planet earth every year as long as I can remember.
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: I love being involved in the 42, you know, bowl pick'em every year because I'll watch them.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: I absolutely love it.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, it's I mean, it's as much of a holiday tradition to me as a Christmas tree is.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: But I know seeing what the players are doing and exercising their opt-out ability, it's only a matter of time before they're just not going to be able to field teams for these games.
- 49:00SPEAKER_04: They probably wouldn't opt out in the playoff, which is probably the point you're leading to.
- 49:03SPEAKER_04: Right, exactly.
- 49:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 49:05SPEAKER_05: If you're opting out of the playoff, why are you even there?
- 49:07SPEAKER_05: You know, right, right.
- 49:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I yeah, absolutely.
- 49:11SPEAKER_05: That's happened ever since they got rid of the BCS and went to the playoffs.
- 49:16SPEAKER_05: Is these bowls are losing more and more popularity, and that's and that is gonna happen with the 12-team playoff with these smaller bowls that already aren't getting a lot of recognition, then they're just gonna be like, No way, why would I play in the cheese it bowl?
- 49:30SPEAKER_05: What's the point?
- 49:31SPEAKER_05: So, um, but yeah, I you know, there's there's a lot of good stuff coming with this expansion.
- 49:36SPEAKER_05: I I'm really happy that the NCAA actually decided to do this.
- 49:39SPEAKER_05: It's a little ridiculous that they only went to four when they first started this thing, but that's the NCAA for you.
- 49:44SPEAKER_05: They always gotta mess it up the first time.
- 49:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, and it it's it's funny to to think about it, you know, the the people who are mad now, they'll be mad, they'll get over it, they'll end up watching.
- 49:56SPEAKER_03: Because I mean, it it's not college football without a large portion of the fan base being mad.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: You know, before the BCS rolled around, it was voters who decided the national champion.
- 50:07SPEAKER_03: We couldn't even get a matchup on the field.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: So we gave it to computers.
- 50:11SPEAKER_03: Everyone was mad because computers were deciding it.
- 50:13SPEAKER_03: So they said, hey, let's take the top two teams actually haven't played each other.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: Well, we got undefeated teams who can't play for a national title, and it's computers.
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: So let's let's give it to human beings again.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: Give it to human beings, man.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: They suck.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: They can't, right?
- 50:28SPEAKER_03: There's only four teams, it's the same four teams, they're just gonna give it to them every year, whatever.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: All right, well, let's make it 12 teams.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, now the regular season's gonna suck because you know everyone gets into playoff now.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: So, like those people are always gonna be mad, and that's okay because they'll still end up watching, they'll still be invested, their team will be on, and they'll still get those blood pressure spikes that any college football fan gets when they're watching a game of significance for their team.
- 50:55SPEAKER_04: The way, the way I see it for the people that are mad is this this is the people's playoff.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: You know, it's kind of like us fans of your middle-of-the-road team has been sitting outside eating our fast food on the curb while the Oklahomas have been in the dining hall eating Porter House steak.
- 51:12SPEAKER_04: You know, now it's like we're banging on the doors because now a team like Texas Tech can actually dream of going.
- 51:18SPEAKER_04: Because I'm gonna be honest, I'm gonna die hard red raider.
- 51:21SPEAKER_04: I'll I'll I'll until I die.
- 51:22SPEAKER_04: But I honest to God didn't think I'd ever see Texas Tech in a four-play four team playoff.
- 51:27SPEAKER_04: I just don't see a scenario where Texas Tech goes completely undefeated in a season.
- 51:32SPEAKER_04: I just couldn't imagine it.
- 51:33SPEAKER_04: I just feel like we unfortunately wouldn't have that sort of grit because there's only a small, small, small amount of teams that can actually do that.
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: And it's called Alabama and such.
- 51:42SPEAKER_04: So I think it's the people's playoff so that the the Texas Techs of the world, because there's other fans like us across the country for other teams, can actually hope for something in the postseason.
- 51:51SPEAKER_04: And I'll be heck, I'll be cheering for the underdogs the entire time.
- 51:54SPEAKER_04: I'll be cheering for the UCF, I'll be cheering for the Boise State, um, and and so on.
- 51:58SPEAKER_04: So I'm really excited about it.
- 52:00SPEAKER_05: Well, and that and that type of thinking makes sense, especially when you're looking at just like a four-team playoff and being like, there's no way we're gonna be a top four team now.
- 52:08SPEAKER_05: And I think the most important part of this whole expansion talk that the NCAA added was having the six automatic conference champions that are ranked the highest in.
- 52:18SPEAKER_05: I think it's the smartest thing that they could have done with this whole deal.
- 52:21SPEAKER_05: Um, because really you win your conference, you're in.
- 52:24SPEAKER_05: If you're in a power five conference, you know, and then even you know, you add in an American or a Mountain West or whoever that year is is getting an auto bid.
- 52:33SPEAKER_05: But that to me is the smartest thing that they did with this whole expansion.
- 52:38SPEAKER_03: And it, you know, what's really interesting, that not only does it help the smaller schools, but what it does is it protects the teams who have been excellent all year.
- 52:50SPEAKER_03: So if you go 12-0 and go to your conference title game and you run across a team from the other side of the division who say has already lost four games, and then a fluke happens in the conference championship game, quarterback gets hurt, whatever it may be.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: The team who's got four losses, who's your conference champion, still has to rank uh high enough to be one of those six spots.
- 53:15SPEAKER_03: So it doesn't guarantee them anything.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: So it's still, you know, so it insulates, it still rewards those who performed excellent during the season in that sense.
- 53:25SPEAKER_03: So I do I think that was one of the more clever kind of nuances of it.
- 53:30SPEAKER_03: But the other thing that I found interesting, so we talked a bit earlier about the the working group that was on, you know, that you know, came up with this proposal.
- 53:40SPEAKER_03: Notre Dame's athletic director, Jack Schwabrick, was on this on this committee.
- 53:46SPEAKER_03: Notre Dame cannot get a first-round bye because they are not in a conference.
- 53:51SPEAKER_03: Now, on the flip side, if Notre Dame never loses more than two games, they're basically guaranteed a spot in the playoff every year.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: So they basically sacrifice the ability to earn a bye week, but have a bit of an inside fast track pass into the playoff every year.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: And they have shown, especially in the last five years, they can go 10-2 every year.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, they can do it, and uh there's no one on their schedule who has risen up to consistently challenge them on a on a weekly basis.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: So I did find that kind of takeaway interesting.
- 54:28SPEAKER_03: I will also be interested to see rematches.
- 54:31SPEAKER_03: We're gonna get a lot more rematches.
- 54:33SPEAKER_03: I mentioned that in the article.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: I'll be interested to see how teams play out the end of the season if they're facing a potential rematch in the playoff.
- 54:42SPEAKER_04: I agree with y'all completely.
- 54:43SPEAKER_04: And uh, I think the six that the seeding the top six champions uh was the most brilliant part about this.
- 54:49SPEAKER_04: I think solidifying the top four have to be conference champions and have those buys, I think that's brilliant because I complain every year.
- 54:58SPEAKER_04: Stephen can attest to this.
- 55:00SPEAKER_04: I complain every year when teams that didn't win their conference championships are included in the playoff.
- 55:05SPEAKER_04: So I'm glad that it kind of spiritually supports that.
- 55:10SPEAKER_04: While, like you all were saying, um, the the teams that succeeded all year but slipped up at the end still have their fair shot at it.
- 55:17SPEAKER_04: So I I really feel like we have nothing but pros here.
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: I'm having a hard time finding cons.
- 55:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and and back to what you said, Andrew, about Notre Dame.
- 55:27SPEAKER_05: This just means don't be independent.
- 55:29SPEAKER_05: Being independent is the stupidest thing ever in my mind.
- 55:32SPEAKER_05: I mean, BYU join a conference, Notre Dame join a conference, do do join a conference, quick you wants to.
- 55:39SPEAKER_05: I'm tired, I'm tired of this independence.
- 55:41SPEAKER_05: I've it's just it doesn't make sense to me having Notre Dame in the playoffs when they don't, you know, they play whoever they want, they can schedule whoever they want.
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: It just it's it's unfair to be honest, and it just doesn't make sense.
- 55:54SPEAKER_03: There's no fun in it.
- 55:55SPEAKER_03: What are you doing?
- 55:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, so Notre Dame, not to be a Notre Dame apologist here, um, but I will say, especially now that they've entered into basically like a like a pseudo membership with the ACC where they're gonna play five ACC games a year, and then they also mix in, you know, typically it's Michigan, they're always playing USC.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, they'll mix in a service academy in there as well.
- 56:21SPEAKER_03: So they don't just it's not a cupcake heavy schedule by any means.
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: Um, so I I I will I will give them that pass.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: Um, but in terms of independence, it's one of those things where Notre Dame just loves the fact that they are an independent, that they are their own uh shiny entity, pun intended.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 56:44SPEAKER_03: Um, they would absolutely make more money by joining a conference, especially if they joined the Big Ten, which is really more what they're affiliated with geographically, but even if they went to the ACC, they're getting more money out of that TV deal than the one they have independently with NBC.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: So it's not even a money issue, it's it's the title, just which is the most Notre Dame thing that you can think of, that they care more about the title than the actual dollars.
- 57:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I I bring it up, I I bring up my frustration because there's just been talk from you know Twitter mostly, uh, just about UT thinking about you know, if the Big 12 were to you know dissolve, they want to go independent.
- 57:30SPEAKER_05: And it's just like, guys, this is the essence of college football is rivalries and fandom and playing the teams that you absolutely despise every year trying to win this game.
- 57:44SPEAKER_05: And and to me, the independent thing, you just don't get that part of it, you know.
- 57:49SPEAKER_05: You don't you don't develop these insane rivalries that make us so upset when Chris Beard chooses to leave and go to your biggest rival, you know, it just it it boils my blood, but that's what the fandom is about.
- 58:03SPEAKER_05: That's what college football is about, that's what college sports are about.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: So that's what gets me riled up with the independence.
- 58:09SPEAKER_05: I I don't like it.
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, I understand Notre Dame, you know, their own entity, whatever, but uh to me, it just doesn't, it just doesn't it's not what college football's about.
- 58:20SPEAKER_04: So, in conclusion, uh the Big 12 should add BYU.
- 58:23SPEAKER_04: Yes, in the bell or something.
- 58:25SPEAKER_03: The Big 12 needs BYU.
- 58:27SPEAKER_03: Well, I would not I wouldn't hate it by any means.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: I'd hate BYU joining the Big 12 for that matter.
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: Of course, now with a 12-team playoff, we're not gonna be able to go get UCF and USF for that matter, to actually make us a 12-team conference, but I'd be on board with with any of those.
- 58:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, or the Arizona schools.
- 58:44SPEAKER_05: Let's poach the pack, let's do something.
- 58:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I yeah.
- 58:49SPEAKER_03: I I I have said for the longest time, I was all in on the Big 12 and then the Pac-10 merging to make the first super conference where they were going to take the three Texas schools and the two Oklahoma schools, and it was gonna be a 16-team conference.
- 59:06SPEAKER_03: Um I was all in favor, and it is very clear there is a school down in Austin, Texas, who hit the no button on that because they wanted their own little channel to display repeats of a bowl game every hour of every day that nobody could get for a while.
- 59:26SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, it's unfortunate.
- 59:29SPEAKER_03: Um, it's it's amazing what ego can do, especially in an industry like this where there are just millions upon millions of dollars to be made.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: And really, just to your point, keeping those rivalries intact only grow the sport.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: Like, I think for me, from a business decision, it's only gonna make the product better.
- 59:54SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 59:55SPEAKER_04: I I I I would bet my entire bank account that Tex Tech makes a big buck anytime UT comes to town.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_04: Like that's that's where the money's made, and that's because that's where the tradition is, and that's what people love about the sport.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_04: And to watch to watch you know, money wash it away, unfortunately, is just a part of the beast, but it's just kind of where we're at.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_04: But I'm I'm totally with y'all.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_04: I I as long as you keep the tradition and the rivalries alive, I'm a pretty happy camper.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_04: I'm a fan.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_04: Uh obviously I'm talking to guys that are like-minded.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_04: I'm a fan that cares about the week to week with my team.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_04: Every Saturday is what matters, it's the only thing that matters every week.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_04: Um, but it's uh it's just kind of an unfortunate part of the beast.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_05: So kind of kind of to end it off here with expansion talk.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_05: When does Texas Tech make its first playoff?
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_05: Andrew, go ahead.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_03: First playoff?
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_05: Um uh well, I mean, is it probably does it have to go to like 60 teams before we get there or what?
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: No, I I think I think if it you know you you build it right, uh there's no reason why Texas Tech couldn't be in a playoff, you know, within a decade.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't think that's unrealistic.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_03: And that I mean that that applies to any peck power five school maybe outside of Kansas.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Like if you if you build it right and you give it an opportunity to develop, you have an athletic director in place who's willing to give a coach time to build the program and do it right.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_03: There's no reason tech can make a playoff appearance in the decade.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what do you think?
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_04: 2008 is when Texas Tech will make a playoff for the first time.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_04: I actually looked up today, we would have been in.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_04: Damn it.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: But so we it's funny, we would have.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_03: So I just went off of the just the the last week rankings.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech would have hosted Boise State in a playoff game.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_03: So it was a Kellen Moore-led um Boise State squad that was undefeated, would have hosted it at the Jones, you know, cram at the time we could cram about 57,000 in there is what we got in there for Texas that year.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, place would have been rocking, place would have been absolutely electric.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_03: Now, we win, we get number one Florida with Tim Tebow and company.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_03: Probably doesn't go our way, but guess what?
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_03: We got a banner that says we were in the playoffs in 2008, and that that's gonna carry more weight than anything.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, but uh well, I'm I'm with Andrew.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_04: Um, I've I was thinking about that as well, uh, because I was thinking about in like Big 12 terms with this new system.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_04: The Big 12 is probably is probably putting in two teams most most every other year, um, and sometimes three.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_04: That looking back in the decade, it actually happened would have happened.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_04: So my expectations for Texas Tech in general are making a run at the Big 12 title, at least contesting for it, about every five years.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_04: So I say it could happen in like six to ten years if if this actually builds up right, because it could be anyone in this conference outside of uh Kansas.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_04: That's how I view it.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't think you're wrong.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_05: Everything you're saying is right with the you know, within the decade, within the next five years, it all depends on how Matt Wells does, really with this season, because this is kind of his make or break year right now.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_05: And I'm actually on the positive note in terms of this upcoming football season.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: I think we have a lot of guys, a lot of returners, a lot of experience on this team.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I think we have the players to to finish in the top half of the Big 12.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, in terms of playoff, I think I think a decade is probably about right if we were, if if things go right, obviously.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, there's I mean, there's reason to be optimistic out here in in West Texas this year for this upcoming season.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, you you've got to trust in Sonny Cumbe, you've got to trust in presumably Tyler Shuck, who's gonna be who's gonna be the starting quarterback.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_03: We lead the Big 12 in the the super seniors category, kind of touching on your experience.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_03: So there's reason for optimism for the for Red Raider Nation this year.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_04: They sleep, and I like it that way.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, don't don't hype us up.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, we like it better when we're under the radar, please.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_05: But right on, man.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_05: Well, that was fun.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_05: College football expansions finally happening.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_05: That is only good news.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_05: No matter if you want eight or 12, it's happening.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_05: And 12 teams, it's it's looking like it.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_05: So, Andrew, man, uh, you were great.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_05: The article was great, but we do this on Talk and Tech Pod every week.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_05: We do a Talk and Tech song of the week.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_05: So, Andrew, we're gonna let you go ahead and give us your song of the week.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_03: So, you know, naturally, we got a couple things happening.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: We got college football, you know, expansion talk.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_03: That gets me hyped, that gets me thinking about tailgating the upcoming season.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_03: Um, but we're also entering into you know, we're about to roll into summer.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_03: So, my song of the week this week is Good Times Roll by Jimmy Allen.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_03: It's just a nice, upbeat, fun song that plays well in the summertime.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_03: It absolutely will play at a tailgate.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_03: You know, we're not looking for anything overly sophisticated here.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_03: Give me a good beat, some quality lyrics, just something that you can play with the windows down, and it just makes you feel good.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_05: Great one, man.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_05: Uh, yeah, dude.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_05: Summertime rolling around, only good vibes.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_05: Jams out, it's getting hot out here, but pool days, lake days, it's always a good time.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_05: So, Tristan, you go ahead.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_04: You're right.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_04: I close my eyes and I'm I'm in a tailgate in the chilly autumn of Loving Texas.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_04: So you're putting me in the right vibe there, man.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_04: Um, with me, I'm gonna keep it upbeat as well.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna do a Texas act pretty much as I always do.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_04: His name is Red Shehan.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_04: And by his name, he looks like he he's Red Shahan.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_04: And uh the song I'm going with, it's a country bluesy kind of.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: Song.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: It's upbeat.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_04: It's fun.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's called Waterbill.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_04: And because Texas Tech is gonna get some bills paid this season, boys.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_04: And it's with this, with this, um, with this playoff expansion, we can we can get the we can pay off the mortgage if we get there, man.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_04: So we're looking forward to it.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_04: That's water bill by Red Shehan.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_06: Too late, too long to party through the painting period.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_05: Very nice.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_05: Very nice.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_05: You're always busting out the uh the West Texas, the country.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_05: Only good stuff from you, man.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_05: Gotta give the local guys love.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm gonna finish it off with my song of the week.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_05: To y'all's point, it is summertime.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_05: Everything is coming together.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_05: It's good times out here.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_05: My song of the week is easy by Lionel Richie featuring Willie Nelson.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_05: This is, of course, the Commodore song originally.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_05: Lionel Richie did an album, I think in 2012, where he did a lot of his hits with uh featuring another famous artist.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_05: If you haven't, the Tuskegee album, it's fantastic.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_05: Uh, but this one is off that album with Willie Nelson.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_05: And it's it's easy.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_05: Everybody knows it's easy like Sunday morning.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_05: It's uh in a it's a great jam.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_05: You just listen to it, go outside, go by the pool, just chill out and listen to some easy.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_07: That's why I see I'm easy like Sunday morning.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_03: No, I I I need to add that to the summer playlist.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, man.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_05: Well, hey, if you want to just add another playlist, if you're looking for jams, we have our talk and tech songs of the week playlist on both Spotify and Apple Music.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_05: We usually post it on Twitter uh whenever we just post our songs of the week every week after we post uh a little marketing for the pod.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_05: So uh well, yeah, big plug, you know.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_05: That's me.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_05: I'm becoming a podcaster, man.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_05: I'm starting to start to know when to say things at the right time.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_05: But Andrew, man, uh we really appreciate you coming on.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_05: Uh some great insight into the new college football playoff expansion.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_05: If you haven't read his article on Guns Up Nation, he has some other great articles, came up uh with one today, actually, about a Texas Tech great Jim Reed.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_05: That was an awesome article to read, always fun to learn about.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_05: Since we're, I mean, we're 24 and 25, so we don't know about the old old, and I mean, you don't know about the old old guys.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_05: I'm not trying to call you 80 years old, my man.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_03: Don't let the bald head fool you now.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_03: I'm not that much older than you guys.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_03: I was not, I was not on campus when Jim Reed was on campus.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: Dragged on the gate, roasted.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_04: Come on, Steven.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_05: Oh man, you know, we got to roast our guests every once in a while.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_05: But uh no, it really was.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_05: It was a great article with some awesome insight about uh just a different time in basketball, man.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_05: I mean, a guy averaging a double-double in college basketball, that's hard to get these days.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_05: And being 6'4, dude, averaging 13 rebounds a game, that's unbelievable.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech's all-time leading rebounder, probably never gonna have that record fall.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_05: So uh you can follow Andrew on Twitter.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_05: He is at CFP uh number four underscore us, uh the playoff chairman himself.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_03: That's right, that's right.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_03: Just just like Tristan said, this is a playoff for the fans.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_03: I absolutely believe unequivocally I am the voice of the fans when it comes to playoff expansion.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_03: If Condoleezza Rice, if General Odierno can earn spots on the actual college football playoff committee, there is no reason myself, Andrew McCleary, cannot be the voice of the fans for playoff expansion talk.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_03: And who do who belongs in the 12 team playoff going forward?
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_05: He's got his finger on the pulse.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_05: All I'm saying is automatic bid for Texas deck every single year.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_05: That's all I want.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_03: With a buy I am only I am only one voice, so I might get overruled by the other 11 in the room whenever they they call me and give me my seat, but I can I can vouch for them the to the best of one man's ability.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_05: Well, hey, man, we appreciate it.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_05: Thanks for coming on the pod.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_03: Appreciate you guys.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_03: Anytime.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_03: It was a blast.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_04: Well, that was fun, man.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_04: That won't be the last time.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_05: So that was our interview with Andrew McCleary from Guns Up Nation.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_05: Uh, great guy to talk to.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_05: We had a really fun discussion on the entire college football playoff expansion.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_05: Um, man, uh just just a lot of fun stuff looking forward for college football.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_05: As uh really as a fan of anybody, not Alabama, Ohio State, or Clemson.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_04: Like I said, it's it's the people's playoff, man.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_04: It's it's it's a lot of fun for everybody now.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_04: That's what that's what's gonna be so great about this.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_04: And man, we have just a great group of uh of thinkers over at Guns Up Nation.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_04: So I can't wait to talk to even more folks from over there.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_05: But uh, we already gave you your songs of the week, so we're just gonna end it off right here.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_05: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_05: Tristan is at Tristymick.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_05: I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.

- 1:11:10SPEAKER_05: Send us your mailbag, send us any off-season questions you may have, anything, your songs of the week, whatever you want.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_05: That is talking tech pod at gmail.com.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_05: You can follow our talk and tech songs of the week playlist, like we mentioned with Andrew earlier.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_05: It's both on Spotify and Apple Music.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_05: We'll put a link on Twitter so y'all can listen to it for some summer jams.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_05: But man, we're gonna end it like always.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_05: Wreck'em tech.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_05: Wreck'em tech.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_02: Uh wow.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_02: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_02: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but also love West Texas.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_01: And I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_01: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan, thanks for coming out.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_02: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_02: Uh we fed off of it.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_02: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_02: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
