- 0:00Speaker 1: To exposit simply means to take out of. We come
- 0:03Speaker 1: to a passage of Scripture and we take out of
- 0:05Speaker 1: it what it is there and present it first of
- 0:08Speaker 1: all to ourselves and then to you.
- 0:10Speaker 2: So in the simplest.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And most basic terms, that's what it means to do exposition.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Systematic exposition is a bit differently. Expository preaching is merely
- 0:22Speaker 1: taking a passage of Scripture in its context and preaching
- 0:26Speaker 1: that passage of Scripture in its context, as opposed to
- 0:28Speaker 1: something topical where we would take multiple verses or portions
- 0:33Speaker 1: of scripture and put them together in order to make
- 0:35Speaker 1: a comment about a certain subject or topic, thus the
- 0:39Speaker 1: name topical preaching.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Now, we don't argue that it's never appropriate to do
- 0:46Speaker 2: topical preaching.
- 0:47Speaker 1: For example, if we were doing a doctrinal study, if
- 0:50Speaker 1: we were, instead of going through the life of Abraham
- 0:52Speaker 1: or going through the Sermon on the Mount, if instead
- 0:54Speaker 1: we were looking at the doctrine of Christ, And let's
- 0:56Speaker 1: say we were to preach a series of messages on
- 0:58Speaker 1: the doctrine of Christ. Then we would be topical because
- 1:01Speaker 1: we would take all of the key passages and key
- 1:03Speaker 1: verses that teach us about the doctrine of Christ and
- 1:07Speaker 1: build those together in our messages. And there may be
- 1:10Speaker 1: times when we do that and that is completely appropriate. However,
- 1:13Speaker 1: there's a difference between a topical series that is doctrinal
- 1:18Speaker 1: in nature and a topical series that is felt needs
- 1:22Speaker 1: and man-centered in nature, which is what we object to.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And so you may hear topical message on the doctrine
- 1:30Speaker 1: of Christ or the doctrine of the church, but you
- 1:32Speaker 1: won't hear topical messages on six ways to have a
- 1:36Speaker 1: happy life and five ways to reduce stress and so
- 1:40Speaker 1: on and so forth ad nauseum ad infinitum, okay?
- 1:45Speaker 2: So there's a difference.
- 1:46Speaker 1: What we practice here is systematic exposition. And what that
- 1:49Speaker 1: means is we do expository preaching, but we do it
- 1:52Speaker 1: systematically through portions of Scripture. For example, we went through
- 1:57Speaker 1: Genesis 1 through 11. That was a portion of Scripture
- 2:01Speaker 1: that we taught through systematically. Now, before we did Genesis
- 2:04Speaker 1: 1 through 11, we did the Gospel of Mark. Before
- 2:08Speaker 1: we did the Gospel of Mark, we did Ephesians, okay?
- 2:13Speaker 1: And so systematically, we were preaching through the Scriptures. What
- 2:15Speaker 1: you'll notice there is that there's a pattern. We started
- 2:18Speaker 1: with an epistle. Then we went to a gospel. Then
- 2:23Speaker 1: we went to the law.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Old Testament.
- 2:26Speaker 1: So we went New Testament, New Testament, then Old Testament,
- 2:28Speaker 1: went to law. Then we came back and we went
- 2:30Speaker 1: through John, or went through Mark and Epistle, came back
- 2:35Speaker 1: to the Old Testament. Then we went through 1 John
- 2:37Speaker 1: and Epistle, came back to the Old Testament. There's a
- 2:39Speaker 1: pattern there. There's an intentional pattern there. We believe that
- 2:43Speaker 1: God has called and commanded us to teach the whole
- 2:46Speaker 1: counsel of God. We have to preach the Old Testament.
- 2:50Speaker 1: We have to preach the New Testament. Not only that,
- 2:52Speaker 1: but in the New Testament, we can't just preach the
- 2:54Speaker 1: epistles Because that's just, that's cherry picking for preachers. That's
- 2:59Speaker 1: the easiest preaching there is in the whole Bible, especially
- 3:02Speaker 1: the Pauline epistles. Paul just, he's a preacher and the
- 3:06Speaker 1: stuff that he writes is just preachable. You can go
- 3:09Speaker 1: to a passage in Pauline scripture and it just falls
- 3:12Speaker 1: into three or four points.
- 3:14Speaker 2: They're just right there, you know, and you just walk
- 3:16Speaker 2: through that. It's cherry picking.
- 3:18Speaker 1: That's the easiest exposition you'll ever do is preaching Pauline epistles.
- 3:21Speaker 2: All right. And that's fine.
- 3:23Speaker 1: There's nothing wrong with that. But you can get real
- 3:25Speaker 1: lazy preaching through Pauline epistles all the time. The other
- 3:28Speaker 1: thing is, we need the Old Testament as much as
- 3:32Speaker 1: we need the New Testament because we know that Jesus
- 3:35Speaker 1: himself said that the entire Bible is about him. So
- 3:40Speaker 1: we have to preach Christ from all of Scripture. And
- 3:43Speaker 1: that's what we've been attempting to do, is preach Christ
- 3:46Speaker 1: from all of Scripture. So as we looked at the
- 3:48Speaker 1: life of Abraham, it wasn't just, here's five things Abraham did,
- 3:51Speaker 1: therefore you go and do them so that you can
- 3:54Speaker 1: be more like Abraham. It is, how do we see
- 3:56Speaker 1: Christ in the life of Abraham? So systematic exposition is
- 4:01Speaker 1: about a balanced diet. By the way, you may not
- 4:04Speaker 1: know this, but we use the same approach for our
- 4:06Speaker 1: scripture reading in the mornings. So we don't just read
- 4:11Speaker 1: New Testament and then Old Testament, but as we read through,
- 4:15Speaker 1: we're about to finish Revelation. And before we read through Revelation,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I believe we did John. So we did a gospel.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Now we did a Pauline epistle. I believe we've read through,
- 4:26Speaker 1: did I say Revelation?
- 4:29Speaker 2: I meant Romans. Romans.
- 4:31Speaker 1: We read through Romans. So we did a gospel. We
- 4:34Speaker 1: did an epistle. Before that, we had done Revelation, I believe.
- 4:39Speaker 1: You know, so now we're probably going to, I mean,
- 4:41Speaker 1: we've read through Acts as well. So we'll probably go
- 4:43Speaker 1: read through another gospel at this time or something. But
- 4:46Speaker 1: the whole idea is a balanced diet for us to
- 4:50Speaker 1: hear the Word of God. When it comes to the
- 4:52Speaker 1: Old Testament, we're in Jeremiah. We'll be in Jeremiah for
- 4:55Speaker 1: a while. Reading a chapter a week, it takes almost
- 4:58Speaker 1: a year to read through Jeremiah, okay? So it would
- 5:01Speaker 1: be a whole year reading through Jeremiah. Well, after we've
- 5:04Speaker 1: read through Jeremiah, we've read through one of the prophets,
- 5:06Speaker 1: we've also read through one of the books of the law,
- 5:09Speaker 1: we'll probably go to some wisdom literature, and we'll preach
- 5:11Speaker 1: through some wisdom literature, okay?
- 5:14Speaker 2: So maybe we'll go Proverbs or Psalms or something of
- 5:16Speaker 2: that nature. Song of Solomon. No, not with the little
- 5:19Speaker 2: ones in here. We may read Song of Solomon with, yeah, yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 2: never mind. All right, and so, again... a balanced diet
- 5:27Speaker 2: of the Word of God.
- 5:29Speaker 1: So you see that more readily as we read through
- 5:33Speaker 1: these books in our New Testament reading and Old Testament reading,
- 5:36Speaker 1: because we do that a lot faster than we preach
- 5:39Speaker 1: through these books. But so now we've been through the
- 5:42Speaker 1: life of Abraham, after having gone through 1 John, after
- 5:46Speaker 1: having gone through Genesis 1 through 11, after having gone
- 5:49Speaker 1: through Mark, after having gone through Ephesians, we're going to
- 5:52Speaker 1: come back and we're going to pick up with Isaac.
- 5:55Speaker 1: And we're going to go through Isaac's life after we've
- 5:58Speaker 1: done the Sermon on the Mount, which gets us back
- 6:01Speaker 1: into gospel again. And we'll go back and we'll do
- 6:05Speaker 1: Isaac's life and then we'll come back and we'll probably do,
- 6:07Speaker 1: I believe it's the book of Acts we talked about
- 6:11Speaker 1: or something we talked about. But again, we talk about
- 6:14Speaker 1: our preaching schedule years in advance because it takes years
- 6:19Speaker 1: for us.
- 6:19Speaker 2: To do all of these things and to do them well.
- 6:22Speaker 2: So that's why we're doing what we're doing.
- 6:26Speaker 1: That's why we're in this book and we're going to
- 6:29Speaker 1: go back to another book and we have Old Testament,
- 6:31Speaker 1: we have New Testament. The whole idea is to give
- 6:33Speaker 1: a balanced diet and to demonstrate the fact that Christ
- 6:37Speaker 1: is present in all of Scripture.
