- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Bomani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:19Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. We're going to talk a little college football
- 0:23Speaker 1: later in a fascinating assortment of other news. But I
- 0:28Speaker 1: will tell you, I never thought, it never dawned on me.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I never dreamed of it. I never imagined the scenario.
- 0:35Speaker 1: where I would come out of a Sunday of football
- 0:38Speaker 1: looking forward to talking to people about the unreal quarterback
- 0:43Speaker 1: duel that we witnessed between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Now look, need you guys to understand something, okay? I
- 0:56Speaker 1: ain't falling for this Sam Darnold thing.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I may ultimately end up being wrong and there's nothing
- 1:06Speaker 1: to fall for, right? But until I am positive there's
- 1:10Speaker 1: nothing to fall for, I'm not going to fall for it.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I would even go another step and tell you I'm
- 1:19Speaker 1: not particularly interested in falling for this Baker Mayfield thing either.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I think Baker Mayfield has squarely worked himself into starting
- 1:27Speaker 1: quarterback territory recently. Good to very good starting quarterback territory,
- 1:31Speaker 1: but I think we're getting a little bit excessive and
- 1:34Speaker 1: overstating what's going on with him playing in the NFC
- 1:37Speaker 1: South and all this other stuff, right?
- 1:39Speaker 2: It's there. Let me explain something to y'all.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I don't have a great answer for how good a
- 1:45Speaker 1: defense Tampa Bay and Seattle were playing in that game,
- 1:49Speaker 1: but that ball was not touching the ground.
- 1:54Speaker 3: That.
- 1:56Speaker 1: That game looked like what it must have been like
- 1:58Speaker 1: when the dream team would do the three man weave.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Like this ball is not touching the ground. They were
- 2:05Speaker 1: just going up and down the field. And I'm going
- 2:08Speaker 1: to be honest with you. Sam Darnold was playing well
- 2:12Speaker 1: enough in that game that I was watching the stuff
- 2:14Speaker 1: he was doing. And it was making me ask something
- 2:17Speaker 1: of myself that I never feel like I want to
- 2:20Speaker 1: have to ask of myself, which is, hey, man, are
- 2:22Speaker 1: you just out here being a hater right now?
- 2:27Speaker 2: You understand what I'm saying?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Like, are you just out here being a hater right now?
- 2:32Speaker 1: Because he looks so goddamn good carving up Tampa Bay. Now,
- 2:37Speaker 1: I also recognize that part of why Tampa Bay looked
- 2:41Speaker 1: like they was getting carved up out there and why
- 2:43Speaker 1: they looked so sorry while they was out there is
- 2:45Speaker 1: they were out there wearing loser suits. Like, Ryan, I
- 2:48Speaker 1: know you're too young to remember when Tampa Bay used
- 2:51Speaker 1: to wear the loser suits every week. But they look
- 2:53Speaker 1: like that game right there looked like it was Seattle wearing,
- 2:57Speaker 1: you know, because both of them came in the league
- 2:58Speaker 1: the same year.
- 2:59Speaker 2: They're both in their 50th season.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And so Seattle was wearing kind of their OG joints
- 3:03Speaker 1: and Tampa Bay was wearing their OG joints.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And that looked like a 4-12 team against an 8-7 team.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I mean, eight and 18, because it felt like the
- 3:10Speaker 1: Seahawks were eight and eight every year that they wore
- 3:12Speaker 1: those uniforms. And with Tampa Bay, who to this day
- 3:15Speaker 1: has the lowest winning percentage for a franchise in the
- 3:18Speaker 1: history of the NFL. They was out there in the
- 3:21Speaker 1: loser suits, like watching them get diced up, wearing them
- 3:23Speaker 1: loser suits.
- 3:24Speaker 2: That looks real familiar, brother. Real familiar.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Yeah, that those those every day is, like you said,
- 3:30Speaker 4: a little before my time. But they combined for 10
- 3:33Speaker 4: incompletions on the day. And both had quarterback ratings around 135.
- 3:38Speaker 4: So pretty solid work for the guys in the average
- 3:41Speaker 4: suit and the loser suit.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Let me tell you this about the Tampa Bay loser suits.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And I guess this has probably changed now with Mayfield.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But prior to Mayfield, Tampa Bay had never signed a
- 3:50Speaker 1: quarterback to a second contract. The whole history of the team.
- 3:58Speaker 1: They never signed a quarterback to a second contract.
- 3:59Speaker 4: That feels impossible.
- 4:00Speaker 1: The only one that they ever kind of wanted to
- 4:02Speaker 1: sign to a second contract was Doug Williams.
- 4:05Speaker 2: But fucking racism.
- 4:06Speaker 1: They were offering him less than they offered backup quarterbacks,
- 4:09Speaker 1: even though he had got them to the NFC Championship game.
- 4:12Speaker 2: But that's who they are.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield is kind of like, without question, the best
- 4:16Speaker 1: quarterback that Tampa Bay has ever had. I have not
- 4:19Speaker 1: seen a quarterback be consistently good for a number of years. Like,
- 4:23Speaker 1: Baker seems to be on his way.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Even old Brady. Yo, Brady.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Damn i forgot that happened didn't it yeah that.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Did happen but the thing about old brady is i
- 4:33Speaker 1: think like that second brady year to me was better
- 4:35Speaker 1: than the first one because the first one if you
- 4:36Speaker 1: remember in the playoffs he was not good.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Yeah i mean and they kind of put it together
- 4:41Speaker 4: that first half of the year they weren't good yeah
- 4:43Speaker 4: they they.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Did some overcoming they had to take stuff out of
- 4:45Speaker 1: the playbook because he couldn't throw outs no more like it.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Was he's fighting with bruce arians that's right and then
- 4:52Speaker 4: that second year he almost came back and he almost
- 4:53Speaker 4: won that mvp Yes. Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 1: But now they out here, they're killing it. And people
- 4:57Speaker 1: talk about this, you know, the thing about to me
- 5:00Speaker 1: about that team as it stands is they're barely beating
- 5:03Speaker 1: everybody they beat, but they're beating just about everybody they play.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And they almost got that win over the Eagles where
- 5:10Speaker 1: they would have been undefeated, but they, they play into
- 5:13Speaker 1: Falcons as tight as they play into Seahawks, basically as
- 5:16Speaker 1: tight as they play in the Eagles. Like it doesn't
- 5:19Speaker 1: tell me anything, but it, They look like they have
- 5:22Speaker 1: a good quarterback, and Seattle also looked like they had
- 5:26Speaker 1: a good quarterback, and I just don't know what to make.
- 5:29Speaker 1: These are two guys that were both on the Carolina
- 5:33Speaker 1: Panthers very recently, both of whom were drafted in 2018,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and both of whom, by the time we got to
- 5:41Speaker 1: the year, I guess it's 2022, were actual real live journeymen.
- 5:47Speaker 4: I think they've been on a combined nine teams.
- 5:50Speaker 1: But can you think, who has played their way out
- 5:52Speaker 1: of journeyman status? Like these guys are all former journeymen.
- 5:56Speaker 1: The thing that's most amazing about that 2018 draft, which
- 5:59Speaker 1: is like, it's not the 1983 draft for quarterbacks that
- 6:02Speaker 1: had all the Hall of Famers, except it is going
- 6:04Speaker 1: to have Josh Allen, who I think will probably make
- 6:06Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame. It will have Lamar Jackson, who
- 6:09Speaker 1: absolutely will make the Hall of Fame. Baker Mayfield has
- 6:13Speaker 1: had some good seasons in the NFL. Sam Darnold seems
- 6:16Speaker 1: to be piecing this thing back together, the Josh Rosen thing.
- 6:19Speaker 2: That's wild. That, you know, it's like it never happened.
- 6:23Speaker 1: But literally none of them turned out the way the
- 6:27Speaker 1: most people thought. Whether that had been good or bad,
- 6:31Speaker 1: nobody went right at like, oh, yeah, well, that's what
- 6:34Speaker 1: I saw was going to happen for those guys.
- 6:37Speaker 4: None of it.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's just been like a mixed hodgepodge of results for
- 6:41Speaker 2: all of those dudes, right?
- 6:44Speaker 1: It wasn't on display in Baltimore because Lamar Jackson was
- 6:46Speaker 1: hurt and they're finished.
- 6:48Speaker 2: They got therapy. asses kick. And yes, part of it
- 6:52Speaker 2: is that Cooper Rush was the quarterback.
- 6:54Speaker 1: This was the week of backup quarterbacks we'd seen previously
- 6:57Speaker 1: be good coming down to earth. Jake Browning went back
- 7:00Speaker 1: to being cheeks after that one stretch he had where
- 7:03Speaker 1: we saw him start and he was good a couple
- 7:04Speaker 1: years ago.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Nah, cheeks.
- 7:08Speaker 1: No other way to look at it. Just cheeks. Carson Wentz,
- 7:13Speaker 1: he didn't look like cheeks, did he? He stopped short
- 7:17Speaker 1: of Cheeks' level. I don't think that he got to
- 7:19Speaker 1: that place. But Cooper Rush, you would have thought that
- 7:23Speaker 1: he would have been better for the Ravens, but that's
- 7:25Speaker 1: not the reason the Ravens gave up 147 points on defense.
- 7:29Speaker 2: They are absolutely done. Done.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Harbaugh gave the vote of confidence for his defensive coordinator,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and that's nice of him, but the bottom line is,
- 7:39Speaker 1: The defensive coordinator is going to get fired first, and
- 7:41Speaker 1: then Harbaugh is going to get fired sometime around the
- 7:44Speaker 1: end of the year unless something drastic changes. This is
- 7:48Speaker 1: the team that we came into the year talking about
- 7:50Speaker 1: as maybe being the most talented in the league. Everything else, boom.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It's like they're not even there. It's like they're not
- 7:56Speaker 1: even there. I guess we would also say that the
- 7:59Speaker 1: next talented team most of us would have leaned into
- 8:02Speaker 1: would have been the Eagles, and they lost this game
- 8:08Speaker 1: to Denver.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Ryan, I don't know how much you watched of this game,
- 8:12Speaker 2: but this team is so weird.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I did not come out of that feeling like the
- 8:17Speaker 1: Broncos were a very good team. But the Broncos scored
- 8:19Speaker 1: 18 points in the fourth quarter to the Eagles scoring none.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And this same Eagles team that wouldn't throw.
- 8:25Speaker 2: The ball at all last week threw it 23 out
- 8:27Speaker 2: of 24 times in the second half?
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 1: 23 out of 24 times in the second half.
- 8:33Speaker 4: With a lead.
- 8:34Speaker 2: With the lead. With the lead.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And by the way, while they were throwing the ball
- 8:38Speaker 1: 23 out of 24 times in the second half, they
- 8:40Speaker 1: only scored seven points. They're up 17 to three going
- 8:45Speaker 1: into the fourth quarter. And all they did was throw
- 8:47Speaker 1: the ball. What are we doing here? Like that feels,
- 8:53Speaker 1: and you tell me if I'm, if I sound ridiculous,
- 8:55Speaker 1: because I don't want to pretend like what we do
- 8:58Speaker 1: in our world is truly that important. But that felt
- 9:01Speaker 1: like somebody doing something to prove a point to us.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a very bizarre thing with the Eagles because
- 9:07Speaker 4: both Saquon and Eagles offensive linemen have talked about how
- 9:10Speaker 4: hard that the last year was on them with all
- 9:13Speaker 4: the touches Saquon had, the attempt for the 2,000-yard season,
- 9:17Speaker 4: the wear and tear those offensive linemen had on their bodies.
- 9:22Speaker 4: But still, it's very bizarre. We've heard all these A.J.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Brown comments. And now they lose the game almost trying
- 9:32Speaker 4: to prove a point that they obviously didn't prove.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Do you see how many times they gave the ball
- 9:36Speaker 2: to running backs in this game?
- 9:38Speaker 4: I did not.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Nine.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Nine. Saquon Barkley had six carries. Six carries.
- 9:48Speaker 1: We got people who get in the chat on YouTube
- 9:51Speaker 1: or in the comments. And they see me as being
- 9:53Speaker 1: some sort of Philadelphia hater, which is weird. I don't
- 9:56Speaker 1: really have a a thought about Philadelphia in one direction
- 9:59Speaker 1: or the other I hate the Phillies but that doesn't
- 10:02Speaker 1: even come up on this show right you guys have
- 10:06Speaker 1: to like agree with what we're talking about right now
- 10:09Speaker 1: though there's no way in the world that you think
- 10:10Speaker 1: that what I'm talking about just hating on them there's
- 10:12Speaker 1: no way in the world that you came out there
- 10:14Speaker 1: look Say whatever you want about Jalen Hurts. He's not
- 10:17Speaker 1: the guy to drop back 38 times and for you
- 10:20Speaker 1: to run it nine with running backs. Like that, you
- 10:25Speaker 1: guys can't do that. Your team can't be that.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And again, It's not like Bo Nix was out here
- 10:31Speaker 2: setting the world on fire.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I did not think that he played well in that game.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I didn't think they did a particularly good job of
- 10:37Speaker 1: running the ball. I did not come out of this
- 10:39Speaker 1: with anything really, although I guess as the game went,
- 10:42Speaker 1: the Broncos defense got better.
- 10:44Speaker 2: But I didn't come out of this feeling like the.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Broncos did anything particularly well.
- 10:46Speaker 2: It just felt full on like the Eagles lost.
- 10:49Speaker 1: The game and they look like a team that has
- 10:52Speaker 1: some level of awareness within itself. that it is not
- 10:56Speaker 1: as good as its record indicates. Who have they beaten, okay?
- 11:00Speaker 1: The Cowboys that none of us think are good, even though, who, boy,
- 11:04Speaker 1: the Jets, do they stink. They beat the Brakes off
- 11:06Speaker 1: of them. The Chiefs that none of us are sure
- 11:09Speaker 1: are good. The Buccaneers who we just talk about keep
- 11:12Speaker 1: squeaking by everybody, but how good they are is debatable.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And I guess you'll give them the Rams, but we
- 11:17Speaker 1: just saw the Rams lose that game at home on
- 11:19Speaker 1: Thursday night, and nobody loses at home on Thursday night.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Like, what's there to feel good about with them right now?
- 11:28Speaker 2: I don't see it.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Do you think they're the constant shifting of the offensive coordinator?
- 11:34Speaker 4: I mean, this is the fourth one they've had in
- 11:36Speaker 4: four years. They had Shane Steichen, Brian Johnson, obviously, Kellen
- 11:39Speaker 4: Moore is now coaching sense. They have a new guy
- 11:41Speaker 4: in there now. This looks like a team without an
- 11:45Speaker 4: offensive identity and like a philosophy.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, you sound like Lionel Richie.
- 11:51Speaker 1: They're a team with no direction, no purpose.
- 11:55Speaker 4: That comparison does not come up before. I'm not going
- 11:59Speaker 4: to lie to you.
- 12:00Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Okay, so yes, they've switched out coordinators every year since 2020.
- 12:06Speaker 1: The Doug Peterson year and then every year after that,
- 12:10Speaker 1: they've switched out coordinators. Some continuity, one would think, would
- 12:13Speaker 1: certainly help. What I find interesting about it is I
- 12:17Speaker 1: always felt like Brian Johnson got scapegoated in 2023 as
- 12:21Speaker 1: being whatever the problems.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Happen to be.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And then he goes and has a significant role in
- 12:26Speaker 1: Washington where Jaden Daniels looks very good that next year.
- 12:34Speaker 1: The theory that people have thrown out that I find
- 12:36Speaker 1: to be interesting is that in 2023, they opened it
- 12:39Speaker 1: up more for Jalen Hurts. And he turned the ball
- 12:43Speaker 1: over a lot more. And we saw what happened is
- 12:46Speaker 1: it all came apart at the end of that year.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Last year, they played a much more conservative brand of
- 12:51Speaker 1: football and they won the Super Bowl. So the approach
- 12:55Speaker 1: seemed to be, well, we will continue to play this
- 12:57Speaker 1: conservative brand of football and then we will go there.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I would say not to let the smooth taste fool
- 13:02Speaker 1: you about the game that they played against Denver in
- 13:06Speaker 1: that they did throw the ball a lot, but I
- 13:10Speaker 1: didn't feel like they were taking that many chances. They
- 13:12Speaker 1: got a couple of big plays at one really big
- 13:14Speaker 1: was 50 something yards to Devante Smith and another one
- 13:17Speaker 1: to a wide open Saquon Barkley. But again, they're not
- 13:22Speaker 1: willing to take any chances. And the truth is, if
- 13:24Speaker 1: you're not willing to take any chances and you're going
- 13:27Speaker 1: to throw the ball that many times, that's crazy. You
- 13:30Speaker 1: might as well run the ball because at least you
- 13:32Speaker 1: can inflict some punishment on the people on the other side.
- 13:34Speaker 2: But I don't... Look, guys. I know it's me.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Talking, okay?
- 13:40Speaker 1: I understand how it'll appear and what you'll think about
- 13:43Speaker 1: the fact that it's me that's the one that's saying
- 13:44Speaker 1: this right now. But you know as well as I
- 13:46Speaker 1: know who the best team in the NFC is right now.
- 13:48Speaker 1: It looked very clearly, once again, to be America's team,
- 13:50Speaker 1: Detroit Lions. When's the last time you watched the Eagles
- 13:54Speaker 1: and thought they looked as good as what we've seen
- 13:55Speaker 1: the Lions be the last couple of weeks?
- 13:58Speaker 2: Show it to them. Have you seen it?
- 14:00Speaker 1: Because I ain't seen it, okay? I have not seen it.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Everybody need to get ready. Watch out for these boys. Um,
- 14:07Speaker 1: speaking of watching out, I got something for you guys
- 14:10Speaker 1: to watch out for. I'm gonna just throw this out here.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but I'm just throwing
- 14:15Speaker 1: it out here and give you guys something to consider.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I got up in the morning and watched the game from, uh, London.
- 14:23Speaker 1: It was the Browns and it was the Vikings. It
- 14:27Speaker 1: was Dylan Gabriel's first start. Um, a friend of the
- 14:30Speaker 1: program who I will not name, uh, Ryan told me that,
- 14:34Speaker 1: Cleveland fans have been calling Dylan Gabriel Hawaii 5'9.
- 14:40Speaker 4: That's hysterical.
- 14:41Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 14:44Speaker 4: That's just good quality work.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Bravo, right? Whoever came up with that one, I hope
- 14:49Speaker 2: you wrote it down. Like, you got to send that
- 14:52Speaker 2: to yourself in an envelope. You know what I'm saying?
- 14:54Speaker 4: I saw someone on the internet gave the nickname to
- 14:57Speaker 4: a different Cleveland Browns quarterback. there's prime time and then
- 15:00Speaker 4: there's mime time.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 15:02Speaker 1: I had not seen that. I had not seen that. Now, look,
- 15:06Speaker 1: maybe Dylan Gabriel could get better.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Dylan Gabriel looks like he's playing with his big brother's
- 15:12Speaker 1: friends out there. Like, he just doesn't seem like he
- 15:14Speaker 1: should be out there playing football. And what I'm saying
- 15:17Speaker 1: to watch out for is if this is the guy
- 15:21Speaker 1: that Shador Sanders can't even get into the conversation with,
- 15:24Speaker 1: and look, I understand that there's a possibility that part
- 15:28Speaker 1: of why he can't get into the conversation about playing
- 15:31Speaker 1: time and all of that is because of whatever preconceived
- 15:33Speaker 1: notions that the staff has and all of that.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Totally gets you, okay? I'm going to just say this, though.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Looking at the way that Dylan Gabriel looked in that game,
- 15:42Speaker 1: if Shador Sanders cannot get himself on the field, on
- 15:46Speaker 1: a team that Dylan Gabriel plays for, he needs to
- 15:50Speaker 1: leave the practice facility and go to the studio and
- 15:55Speaker 1: start rapping.
- 15:59Speaker 2: If he doesn't want to rap, you know what? Rapping's
- 16:03Speaker 2: a little too stereotypical. How about you just go do
- 16:06Speaker 2: a podcast?
- 16:07Speaker 5: Something.
- 16:08Speaker 1: But you're going to need to get on the mic.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Because this young man here is not going to play
- 16:12Speaker 1: no whole lot of NFL football. Like if they looking
- 16:14Speaker 1: at him and looking at you and they're like, it
- 16:16Speaker 1: would be preposterous for us to let you play.
- 16:18Speaker 2: But they let him play. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
- 16:22Speaker 1: You got a long way to go. Like all that,
- 16:23Speaker 1: all that talk he had about he's looking around the
- 16:25Speaker 1: rest of the league. He knows he's capable of it.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I don't know what you got to do to get there.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Because as of right now, they don't think you are
- 16:31Speaker 1: capable of being Dylan Gabriel. And I, if I were you,
- 16:34Speaker 1: I wouldn't be talking to nobody either. I wouldn't be
- 16:37Speaker 1: a mom. I'd be walking around there acting like a
- 16:39Speaker 1: couple of women I dated, just giving them the silent treatment.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Just not saying nothing to nobody. I'd be mad to
- 16:43Speaker 1: the motherfucker if he was telling me I can't do that.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And they are saying that loud and clear and they
- 16:48Speaker 1: might be right.
- 16:55Speaker 2: All right.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I decided to take in some college football this weekend. Um,
- 17:01Speaker 1: Just want to throw this out here about the college
- 17:03Speaker 1: football right now. I recall with the advent of the playoff,
- 17:10Speaker 1: a lot of discussion about whether the playoff would ruin
- 17:15Speaker 1: things for college football.
- 17:17Speaker 2: And I don't think it has done that.
- 17:20Speaker 1: You know, and I have a fairly doom and gloom
- 17:22Speaker 1: outlook about a lot of the changes that are happening.
- 17:25Speaker 1: We call it a modernize or whatever it is. But
- 17:27Speaker 1: I don't think that the playoff has done anything to
- 17:30Speaker 1: mess up college football necessarily. I still think, and maybe
- 17:35Speaker 1: it's just because we're still caught up in the old,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I don't know if I would call it the old
- 17:41Speaker 1: ways of doing things, but just what a college football
- 17:45Speaker 1: game means. Maybe we're in a time period that is
- 17:47Speaker 1: a lag and this will change. But I still find
- 17:51Speaker 1: myself very much viewing college football games.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Like one at a time.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I personally am not at a place where I think
- 17:59Speaker 1: about playoff consequences really ever when somebody loses a game,
- 18:04Speaker 1: especially not this early.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 18:06Speaker 1: It's like even Penn State, which lost that game to UCLA.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Does that eliminate them from the playoff? Yeah, I guess.
- 18:13Speaker 1: But you know what else it does? They lost to
- 18:16Speaker 1: a team that was 0-4. You know what it does?
- 18:19Speaker 1: It stinks for them. That part of it is sufficient
- 18:23Speaker 1: enough for me that I don't need to think about
- 18:24Speaker 1: this in terms of any long-term consequences. And so it
- 18:28Speaker 1: really got me to thinking about what goes on at
- 18:31Speaker 1: this time of year. And And I don't know if
- 18:37Speaker 1: this is a function of the playoff. I don't know
- 18:39Speaker 1: where this comes from, but I very often feel like
- 18:41Speaker 1: this time of year, what is often or should be
- 18:45Speaker 1: interesting about it is the teams who win. And when
- 18:48Speaker 1: I say the teams who win, you wind up with
- 18:51Speaker 1: teams in this, like at this current time, like for example, Indiana,
- 18:57Speaker 1: which apparently Ryan last year's Indiana is, I.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Mean, this year's Indiana is Indiana.
- 19:05Speaker 1: That seems to be the case, that what Indiana was
- 19:08Speaker 1: last year is also Indiana this year?
- 19:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, they're top ten ranked. They're still doing.
- 19:15Speaker 2: It somehow, some way.
- 19:16Speaker 1: When they put that hurt to Illinois, like, that's the thing.
- 19:19Speaker 1: It's not just that they're doing it. They're not just
- 19:21Speaker 1: scraping by people.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Like, we saw with Vanderbilt and Alabama, for example, over
- 19:25Speaker 2: the weekend. They're not big enough.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Correct.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Like they just they didn't.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Win the way they used to win. They just leaned
- 19:33Speaker 4: on people.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Like it was amazing that Vanderbilt played. I thought as
- 19:37Speaker 1: good a game as you could ask for Vanderbilt to play.
- 19:39Speaker 2: But I was out there. I'm like, yo, it's amazing
- 19:41Speaker 2: you're doing as well as you guys are because you
- 19:43Speaker 2: guys just aren't big enough.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 19:45Speaker 2: You're not.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Indiana looks like a Big Ten team right now. And
- 19:49Speaker 1: maybe it'll be different right there. get like they were
- 19:51Speaker 1: in the playoff last year where they played against Notre
- 19:52Speaker 1: Dame and they looked a little bit overwhelmed or whatever. But.
- 19:57Speaker 1: This time of year is often, like you go through
- 19:59Speaker 1: the top tens, Ohio State, Miami at number two, Oregon,
- 20:02Speaker 1: Ole Miss at number four, right? Like that is a
- 20:04Speaker 1: team that becomes more interesting because Ole Miss is never
- 20:07Speaker 1: at number four. Texas A & M at number five. Wow,
- 20:10Speaker 1: I wonder how they're going to wind up getting back
- 20:12Speaker 1: down to eight and four. Good gracious, it's going to
- 20:13Speaker 1: take hard work. I'll never put it past them. But
- 20:18Speaker 1: you look at teams that are surprisingly good and look
- 20:22Speaker 1: at where they are.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Like, oh wow, I can't believe that team won. They
- 20:25Speaker 2: continue to go.
- 20:26Speaker 1: This week, I was just fascinated by who lost and
- 20:30Speaker 1: not just like simply.
- 20:31Speaker 2: By who lost, but how it was.
- 20:34Speaker 1: That these teams managed to lose and what the kind
- 20:37Speaker 1: of consequences were of them losing. Like we could start
- 20:40Speaker 1: with that Penn State game. I can't believe they lost
- 20:43Speaker 1: that game.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Penn State losing that game. I feel like, and I could.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Be wrong about this, but for me, A number of reasons,
- 20:55Speaker 1: some of them absolutely being James Franklin's fault. I think
- 20:59Speaker 1: that he is a bit of an easy target. And
- 21:02Speaker 1: I guess he has racked up that terrible record in
- 21:05Speaker 1: those games against, you know, teams in the top 10,
- 21:08Speaker 1: top 20, whatever it.
- 21:09Speaker 6: Is, right?
- 21:09Speaker 4: But this is a game he never loses.
- 21:11Speaker 2: No, that's what I'm saying. These are the ones he wins.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Like, Mack Brown was a guy like that, where you
- 21:15Speaker 1: may not win the it could go either way games,
- 21:19Speaker 1: but he's going to win the games that he's supposed
- 21:22Speaker 1: to win.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Losing a game as a 24-point favorite in college football
- 21:25Speaker 4: is almost impossible.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I mean, UCLA got blown out at the Rose Bowl
- 21:31Speaker 1: by New Mexico.
- 21:33Speaker 4: I think I saw a set they hadn't led all year.
- 21:37Speaker 1: I mean, look, I understand that they change coaches and
- 21:40Speaker 1: you get a boost or whatever that is, but that's
- 21:42Speaker 1: a team that had a— And look, Penn State did
- 21:44Speaker 1: not look bad in that game that they lost to Oregon.
- 21:47Speaker 4: No.
- 21:47Speaker 2: They went to overtime. They just lost, right?
- 21:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:51Speaker 1: They lost that game. And look, college kids, man, a
- 21:54Speaker 1: game like that going to take something out of you.
- 21:57Speaker 1: But it never dawned on me that they couldn't come
- 21:58Speaker 1: back out here and beat UCLA.
- 22:00Speaker 4: They were down 27-7 at half.
- 22:03Speaker 2: How was that?
- 22:04Speaker 3: Like.
- 22:04Speaker 2: That's on the coach. And look, that's on the coach even.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Understanding that there's certain limitations to what it is that
- 22:11Speaker 1: the coach can do. But I don't know what anybody
- 22:14Speaker 1: would have had to do to win a game to
- 22:15Speaker 1: be more interesting than Penn State losing that game. Case
- 22:19Speaker 1: in point, Miami looked really good against Florida State. And
- 22:21Speaker 1: they look like, again, Cristobal taking the saving formula and
- 22:25Speaker 1: applying it at Miami.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 22:29Speaker 4: And also fixing Carson Beck. from all the struggles he
- 22:33Speaker 4: had last year. And, you know, when he comes in,
- 22:35Speaker 4: he almost looks like, you know.
- 22:36Speaker 2: He looks like the number one pick in the draft. Right.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Like, you look around at who the other quarterbacks are, and,
- 22:41Speaker 1: you know, I had not seen much of that Mateer
- 22:43Speaker 1: dude that transferred to Oklahoma. Carson Beck in that game
- 22:46Speaker 1: looked like a guy that, I know what it looks
- 22:48Speaker 1: like when you're going to take a guy number one
- 22:49Speaker 1: in the draft. Like, the first time I saw Anthony
- 22:51Speaker 1: Richardson play in college, I was like, I don't.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Know how good he is, but I know he's going
- 22:54Speaker 2: to make a lot of money.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Right. Like, you know what a first round pick looks like.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Carson Beck once again looks like a first round pick.
- 23:02Speaker 1: But that's not as interesting as Franklin taking that L
- 23:05Speaker 1: in that game or Belichick.
- 23:07Speaker 2: My God. They could have scored 80 points against Carolina
- 23:13Speaker 2: if they had wanted to.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Did it feel to you like Dabo just decided, we
- 23:18Speaker 1: go put the screws to him early just to show
- 23:20Speaker 1: him that we.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Can, but I'm Dabo's sweaty man of God. So, you know,
- 23:23Speaker 2: I'm going to show some love.
- 23:24Speaker 4: He looked like he was showing, he had to show
- 23:26Speaker 4: forgiveness to himself for running up the score. They are
- 23:30Speaker 4: so bad.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Like, what's happening at Carolina, they got so much attention early.
- 23:35Speaker 1: and they had planned for this game to get them
- 23:37Speaker 1: a lot of attention. But it still did get a
- 23:39Speaker 1: lot of attention, I think. Look, yes, it's a noon kick,
- 23:42Speaker 1: but if you're flipping channels at noon and it's Clemson
- 23:45Speaker 1: and Carolina and you know Belichick's there and you haven't
- 23:47Speaker 1: been watching, hey, let me drop in here and see
- 23:49Speaker 1: what's going on. Carolina did not have their starting quarterback,
- 23:52Speaker 1: but there's no excuse for them to be this bad.
- 23:55Speaker 1: And the only reason they're this bad is the reason
- 23:57Speaker 1: that I tried to tell y'all was going to be
- 23:59Speaker 1: the biggest issue with this team coming into the year,
- 24:01Speaker 1: which is.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Talent identification. What did Belichick get at the end in
- 24:09Speaker 1: the NFL was he could not properly identify talent, and
- 24:14Speaker 1: he made his general manager a guy who is a
- 24:17Speaker 1: bad general manager in the NFL.
- 24:19Speaker 2: They moved into this whole new world that they don't
- 24:21Speaker 2: know anything about. And Ryan and I were reading this
- 24:24Speaker 2: article earlier this week where an.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Anonymous group of five head coach, and for those who
- 24:30Speaker 1: don't know what we're talking about here, you got your
- 24:31Speaker 1: Power Four conferences, and then the group of five are
- 24:34Speaker 1: the other FBS conferences, but they're not Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, right?
- 24:40Speaker 1: And this dude was talking about how in recruiting, he
- 24:43Speaker 1: lost out on a couple of players to North Carolina.
- 24:47Speaker 1: And he was like, I'm telling you right now, any
- 24:49Speaker 1: school from that level who is competing with us for talent,
- 24:54Speaker 1: their teams are all going to be bad. These are
- 24:59Speaker 1: like group of five level players. And Ryan, I looked
- 25:02Speaker 1: at the depth chart. They're not even young. Like they
- 25:05Speaker 1: brought in a lot of these transfers this year and
- 25:07Speaker 1: it's a lot of juniors. It's a lot of seniors,
- 25:10Speaker 1: a lot of redshirt junior, a lot of red. Like
- 25:12Speaker 1: this is not a young team. This is not a
- 25:14Speaker 1: team that you look at and you're like, oh, they're
- 25:15Speaker 1: going to get better and they're going to improve. You
- 25:17Speaker 1: go look at that too deep. That's a lot of grownups.
- 25:20Speaker 4: And I mean, it's not that they're losing. It's that.
- 25:22Speaker 4: They're losing. They paid Bill Belichick $ 10 million. And they
- 25:25Speaker 4: can't keep the fans in the stands until the third quarter.
- 25:28Speaker 3: No.
- 25:28Speaker 2: And let me tell you something about North Carolina football fans.
- 25:31Speaker 2: They become North Carolina basketball fans quick, fast, in a hurry. Like,
- 25:36Speaker 2: it happens.
- 25:36Speaker 1: And look, the basketball team ain't been making a field
- 25:39Speaker 1: that good lately, but it ain't going to beat this shit.
- 25:42Speaker 4: And, like, people criticize, you know, Deion. But Deion actually
- 25:47Speaker 4: got players to come to Colorado, and he turned it around.
- 25:49Speaker 6: He did.
- 25:49Speaker 4: But they were winning. They're winning games. You look in
- 25:52Speaker 4: the ACC, see what Fran Brown's doing in Syracuse.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Yes.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I mean, he comes in there immediately. He gets Ohio
- 25:58Speaker 4: State's cast off, and they're throwing the ball around. I mean,
- 26:02Speaker 4: you tell me that Bill Belichick can't do what Indiana's doing? Right.
- 26:07Speaker 1: With a team, as Spencer pointed out, a bunch of
- 26:09Speaker 1: dudes from James Madison.
- 26:11Speaker 4: From the Sun Belt.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Hey, he brought his old luggage. He brought his old luggage.
- 26:16Speaker 2: It wasn't even Louie, but it's hold what you need, right? Now,
- 26:20Speaker 2: you mentioned Deion.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Deion is... We're not paying attention to that story anymore
- 26:25Speaker 1: over there. But to me, it's much more interesting now.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Now, there are.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Ways that it is like... I don't want to say interesting.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Deion was saying that he's got blood clots that are
- 26:35Speaker 1: affecting him. I don't... His health has been an issue
- 26:41Speaker 1: since he has become a coach, like all the way
- 26:44Speaker 1: back to Jackson State.
- 26:46Speaker 2: So there are....
- 26:48Speaker 1: It is fair to ask the question about how much
- 26:50Speaker 1: longer you expect him to continue to do this job
- 26:53Speaker 1: because of how physically.
- 26:54Speaker 2: I.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Almost said that word doesn't feel right, but his body
- 26:59Speaker 1: does not seem to be holding up well, and this
- 27:01Speaker 1: is a very stressful job for a man to do.
- 27:04Speaker 1: He is no longer coaching his son.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Physically and mentally demanding.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:09Speaker 2: It's a lot.
- 27:10Speaker 4: People, we always talk about the stress. college football coaches
- 27:16Speaker 4: go through during their schedule. They're insane workloads. And that's
- 27:19Speaker 4: not for people dealing with blood clots so bad. They're
- 27:21Speaker 4: wearing one shoe on the sideline. Right, right.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Like he's in a tough place. But let's say none
- 27:26Speaker 2: of that was the case, right?
- 27:28Speaker 1: Let's say that Deion Sanders was perfectly healthy. This team
- 27:32Speaker 1: is not good. This team is probably not going to
- 27:36Speaker 1: be one to make a bowl game.
- 27:40Speaker 2: One of the points that you're seeing being.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Made a lot about Belichick is Teams don't, you don't
- 27:45Speaker 1: get time to be bad anymore, right? Like there was
- 27:49Speaker 1: a time that Belichick could come in and say that
- 27:51Speaker 1: he was overhauling the program and they can maybe go
- 27:53Speaker 1: out here and be two and 10 and you give
- 27:55Speaker 1: yourself a chance to rebuild and put it together. And
- 27:57Speaker 1: that time wasn't really that long ago with NIL and
- 27:59Speaker 1: the ability to go get people and get some bread
- 28:01Speaker 1: and immediately restock that roster.
- 28:03Speaker 2: People ain't waiting that long for you to figure this out.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Now, to me, Colorado with Deion becomes interesting because, look,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I don't know how anybody else feels about this, but
- 28:13Speaker 1: I feel confident that if you give Deion Sanders a
- 28:15Speaker 1: budget that is adequate and competitive with his peers, they're.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Going to have a roster.
- 28:21Speaker 7: Right.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I don't know who all the people are that are
- 28:24Speaker 1: doing the talent identification there or who are running his
- 28:27Speaker 1: recruiting situation, but. Deion Sanders is a closer, and we
- 28:31Speaker 1: have seen him close on some big recruits. We know
- 28:33Speaker 1: he doesn't like doing the high school thing, but still,
- 28:36Speaker 1: he's a guy that we feel like could.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Go in there and get players if they are competitive, okay?
- 28:42Speaker 1: Colorado's not going to fire Deion Sanders. He's been so
- 28:47Speaker 1: good for them in so many ways. That will never happen.
- 28:51Speaker 1: My question is, Deion Sanders had a fifth round pick
- 28:55Speaker 1: at quarterback last year, receivers that are in the NFL,
- 28:59Speaker 1: and Travis Hunter, a generational college football player. How likely
- 29:05Speaker 1: is it that he's going to be able to put
- 29:06Speaker 1: it together like that again on one roster? And if
- 29:09Speaker 1: he doesn't put it together like that again on one roster,
- 29:12Speaker 1: what is Colorado football.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Going to be?
- 29:14Speaker 1: Is anybody going to be happy if they are a consistent,
- 29:17Speaker 1: call it six or seven win team?
- 29:19Speaker 2: Because I got news for you.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Colorado consistently winning six or seven games would be pretty good.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I know that's not something that anybody would ever be
- 29:27Speaker 1: satisfied with. And I know that they cannot continue to
- 29:30Speaker 1: be like everybody's favorite Friday night attraction, probably under those circumstances.
- 29:36Speaker 1: But at this point in time, Colorado is a six-win school.
- 29:42Speaker 1: But how does it go with those people after they
- 29:44Speaker 1: kind of got spoiled with how this started early? How
- 29:47Speaker 1: does it go if they're a four-win team? How much
- 29:50Speaker 1: and how well are people able to handle that? And
- 29:55Speaker 1: so I had just been thinking all weekend about this,
- 29:58Speaker 1: like how interesting it, how it becomes interesting in college football,
- 30:03Speaker 1: the losses make you ask more questions so often and
- 30:07Speaker 1: to speak to more things about what's going on. Like
- 30:10Speaker 1: you think about this, for example, what was more interesting
- 30:14Speaker 1: last year? Ryan Day winning a national championship or Ryan
- 30:19Speaker 1: Day losing to Michigan? Ryan, the more that I talk
- 30:22Speaker 1: about this, being a college football coach sounds awful. as
- 30:26Speaker 1: a job there's no win that you can get to
- 30:28Speaker 1: make me care about you as much as when you lose.
- 30:31Speaker 4: I mean especially when you lose and again losing an
- 30:35Speaker 4: empty stadium is even worse.
- 30:39Speaker 2: And look man.
- 30:42Speaker 1: These crazy road trips in the Big Ten are gonna
- 30:44Speaker 1: stink but your reward for that flight was that you
- 30:49Speaker 1: got to play UCLA I didn't think UCLA was gonna
- 30:52Speaker 1: win a game this year and guess what They might
- 30:55Speaker 1: not win another one, but they beat you.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Yikes.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Football is back and so is your shot at big wins.

- 33:29Speaker 4: All right, Bo, let's get to some stories from the weekend.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Sean Combs' ditty sentencing was Friday afternoon. He was sentenced
- 33:44Speaker 4: to 50 months in prison. for prostitution-related offenses. You know,
- 33:49Speaker 4: this got global attention for, you know, a variety of
- 33:52Speaker 4: salacious reasons. What was your reaction to this news?
- 33:55Speaker 1: He thought that he was going to walk out of
- 33:59Speaker 1: that courtroom on Friday and go back to B & D.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Amazing.
- 34:07Speaker 2: A-fucking-mazing.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Like, the most interesting thing to me about OJ after
- 34:13Speaker 1: the acquittal is by every account, OJ Simpson thought that
- 34:16Speaker 1: since he had won the game, that he was going
- 34:19Speaker 1: to go back to being OJ Simpson, only to be
- 34:22Speaker 1: quickly reminded, hey man, these white people think you kill
- 34:25Speaker 1: two people.
- 34:26Speaker 2: They don't really want you around no more, right?
- 34:30Speaker 1: Diddy was scheduling interviews. He really thought he was just
- 34:35Speaker 1: going to walk out of jail. And he totally misunderstood
- 34:38Speaker 1: that He was clearly overcharged, right? I think we'd all
- 34:43Speaker 1: have to agree there. The Dave Chappelle lie that Diddy
- 34:46Speaker 1: was in an enormous amount of trouble. This man was
- 34:48Speaker 1: on trial for Rico by himself. That perhaps was a
- 34:51Speaker 1: sign that maybe, just maybe, things had gotten a little
- 34:54Speaker 1: bit out of hand. I just can't believe anybody on power,
- 34:58Speaker 1: positive thinking ass would have thought under those circumstances that
- 35:01Speaker 1: they were.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Not going to do any time at all.
- 35:07Speaker 1: All them terrible letters that people was writing about you,
- 35:10Speaker 1: and you thought you weren't going to do any time. No, no, no,
- 35:15Speaker 1: big dog. He's going to do that time, and I
- 35:18Speaker 1: hope he understands. Me and Joel talked about this before.
- 35:21Speaker 1: There ain't going to be no you get introduced at
- 35:24Speaker 1: the Grammys and stand in ovation sort of situation. I
- 35:27Speaker 1: don't I don't know what room it is that he's
- 35:29Speaker 1: going to go into and get this like super reception.
- 35:32Speaker 2: And Ryan, you and I talked about this before we
- 35:34Speaker 2: started the show.
- 35:35Speaker 1: I don't, if he thinks he's about to get a
- 35:37Speaker 1: friendly interview with somebody, I don't know who he's going
- 35:39Speaker 1: to get it with. Like maybe I don't think, I
- 35:42Speaker 1: don't think he could get that on drink champs or
- 35:44Speaker 1: Joe button on none of them either. I don't know
- 35:46Speaker 1: where you think he bought to go. And everybody's been like, Hey,
- 35:47Speaker 1: come on in and have a seat. Great to see people.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Don't when people do things that are that publicly unseemly. Yes.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Which I think is, The minimum way that these– like
- 35:59Speaker 4: even at the most forgiving that what he's charged with
- 36:02Speaker 4: can be described as. Like people don't want to be seen–
- 36:05Speaker 4: people don't want to take pictures with you. People don't
- 36:07Speaker 4: want to be seen with you. People don't want you
- 36:09Speaker 4: at your– people don't go to these fancy events in
- 36:12Speaker 4: their tuxedos to take pictures with Mr. Freakoff.
- 36:17Speaker 1: No, he might have got away with it if this
- 36:19Speaker 1: had happened when he was younger, right?
- 36:20Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Like, I mean, it's like Chris, it's not like the
- 36:23Speaker 1: stuff with Chris Brown never happened.
- 36:25Speaker 7: Right.
- 36:25Speaker 1: But he has found a lane and he navigate, he goes,
- 36:29Speaker 1: he plays these big arenas, right?
- 36:30Speaker 2: Like all of these things. Like he has a huge
- 36:32Speaker 2: base there.
- 36:33Speaker 4: He's, he's not blacklisted or canceled in any way. Correct.
- 36:35Speaker 1: But when people find this out about you in your fifties,
- 36:37Speaker 1: they ain't a lot of room for you to be redeemed.
- 36:41Speaker 1: You know, like there's not like there's, there's no space
- 36:44Speaker 1: for people to be.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Like, okay, no, he'll, he'll that. Yes, that happened before. No, dog.
- 36:50Speaker 1: That's not going to be it. I'm going to go
- 36:54Speaker 1: home and I'm going to do interviews. The best thing
- 36:56Speaker 1: that ever happened to him is that he didn't have
- 36:58Speaker 1: to go do no interview with nobody. That would have
- 37:00Speaker 1: been a disaster.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Yeah. All right. And more legal news. Ex-Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez,
- 37:08Speaker 4: also current Fox Sports commentator, was pepper sprayed and stabbed
- 37:11Speaker 4: multiple times. during a late-night altercation with a truck driver
- 37:15Speaker 4: in downtown Indianapolis this weekend. He was charged with battery
- 37:19Speaker 4: with injury, public intoxication, unlawful entry of vehicle, all misdemeanors.
- 37:24Speaker 4: There's a hearing on Tuesday morning. Bo, your thoughts.
- 37:27Speaker 1: All right, so people need to understand the timing of it. Ryan,
- 37:30Speaker 1: stay here with me on this time just to make
- 37:32Speaker 1: sure I get this right. So the word got out on.
- 37:37Speaker 1: I guess it was Sunday or something. It was Saturday.
- 37:40Speaker 4: The incident happened Saturday morning. The word came out, started
- 37:44Speaker 4: to come out Saturday.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Saturday, okay.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Because he was supposed to call a game today.
- 37:48Speaker 5: Yes, yes.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Okay, there we go. That is the time.
- 37:50Speaker 1: So the word gets out on Saturday that Mark Sanchez
- 37:53Speaker 1: has been stabbed.
- 37:54Speaker 2: And you know what that means. First, you do the thoughts.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Then you do the prayers, right?
- 38:00Speaker 4: I mean, yes, Fox was putting out statements.
- 38:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Right. A few people... With a little with a little
- 38:07Speaker 2: with a little schism on their breath, jumped a little
- 38:09Speaker 2: bit too fast. Right.
- 38:11Speaker 4: And talking about a fatherless African-Americans.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like they blamed it on
- 38:17Speaker 2: black people for stabbing them.
- 38:18Speaker 1: But then we got word from the Indianapolis police that
- 38:22Speaker 1: Mark Sanchez had been stabbed and arrested. Which is a
- 38:28Speaker 1: really unfortunate combination of things to be. Get stabbed and
- 38:34Speaker 1: get arrested. And then they say they got video of
- 38:37Speaker 1: all this that happened. but it's a delivery driver.
- 38:40Speaker 2: And what he does is he's 69 years old and
- 38:44Speaker 2: he picks up used cooking oil from places. So he
- 38:47Speaker 2: had gone to pick up the used cooking oil from
- 38:50Speaker 2: the Marriott in Indianapolis. That sounds like a horrific job, but.
- 38:55Speaker 1: He was going to pick it up and something happened
- 38:57Speaker 1: and Mark Sanchez ran up on him for reasons that
- 39:00Speaker 1: we don't know.
- 39:01Speaker 2: And the man is 69 years old. We want to
- 39:05Speaker 2: say this again.
- 39:06Speaker 1: And the way that that man talked about Mark Sanchez
- 39:09Speaker 1: coming out of him, it sounded like the police report
- 39:12Speaker 1: from an officer involved shooting.
- 39:14Speaker 2: He was like, hey, man, I don't know what was
- 39:16Speaker 2: going on with him.
- 39:17Speaker 1: And the way that he was looking at me, but
- 39:19Speaker 1: I realized that it was a life or death situation
- 39:24Speaker 1: with Mark Sanchez.
- 39:29Speaker 2: So at some point.
- 39:30Speaker 1: He sprays Mark Sanchez in the eyes with pepper spray.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Put a pin in that thought. Spray Mark Sanchez in
- 39:39Speaker 1: the eyes with pepper spray. And then Mark Sanchez wiped
- 39:43Speaker 1: it off and kept charging that buddy until he gets
- 39:47Speaker 1: buddy on the ground.
- 39:48Speaker 2: He starts roughing him up.
- 39:49Speaker 1: And then my man said he had to stab Mark
- 39:52Speaker 1: Sanchez a couple of times while he was on the ground.
- 39:55Speaker 2: And then he had to stab him again after he
- 39:58Speaker 2: got him off him.
- 39:59Speaker 1: There are pictures that you can find of this 69-year-old man.
- 40:02Speaker 1: And all I can say is I find it highly
- 40:05Speaker 1: unlikely that Mark Sanchez will still be charged with misdemeanors
- 40:08Speaker 1: when this was over.
- 40:09Speaker 2: He fucked that old man up. He, he, he, he came.
- 40:16Speaker 1: I will say this about Mark Sanchez. And whatever his
- 40:19Speaker 1: future is, I don't have an answer. But I'm going
- 40:22Speaker 1: to tell you this. If you are ever caught doing
- 40:25Speaker 1: something or hemmed up doing something and people reasonably ask
- 40:29Speaker 1: the following question, you think he was smoking dust? If
- 40:35Speaker 1: what you've done has made people wonder if you were
- 40:37Speaker 1: smoking dust, you ain't coming back from that, brother.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Just so you understand that. You are not coming back
- 40:44Speaker 2: from that.
- 40:45Speaker 1: And I would also say that he got very lucky
- 40:48Speaker 1: in the sense, things I learned this weekend, because look,
- 40:50Speaker 1: I'm from Texas, okay?
- 40:52Speaker 2: And there's a whole range.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Of activities that in Texas people ain't really readily getting into.
- 40:57Speaker 1: And it's like these right here for a very simple reason,
- 41:00Speaker 1: which is we be shooting people. Now, I was positive
- 41:03Speaker 1: that Indiana was a place that would allow you to
- 41:05Speaker 1: do a concealed carry, but I went and searched it anyway.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Not only can you do concealed carry in Indiana, you
- 41:11Speaker 1: don't even have to get a permit. And Mark Sanchez
- 41:15Speaker 1: is lucky that he ran up on a dude who
- 41:17Speaker 1: in a life or death situation just goes to his
- 41:19Speaker 1: pepper spray and his knife as opposed to the dude
- 41:22Speaker 1: that goes to the tool. Because of the way this
- 41:24Speaker 1: circumstance is being described, you would have got smoked and
- 41:28Speaker 1: he would have got away with it.
- 41:29Speaker 2: But instead, he hit you with pepper spray. Speaking of
- 41:35Speaker 2: pepper spray, Ryan, I know.
- 41:38Speaker 1: You've been anxiously anticipating this since I told you a
- 41:40Speaker 1: little bit about what my thoughts were about this.
- 41:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I was curious where you were going, and I
- 41:46Speaker 4: can't wait to hear.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Okay, so pepper spray. is like the underhand free throws
- 41:56Speaker 2: of self-defense.
- 42:00Speaker 4: As in everyone should use it because it's the most effective?
- 42:04Speaker 2: So, so, so. Here's the thing about underhanded free throws.
- 42:07Speaker 1: And it also dawned on me that some of you
- 42:09Speaker 1: are maybe young enough that you don't really know what
- 42:11Speaker 1: the story is on underhand free throws. But there was
- 42:13Speaker 1: a guy back in the day named Rick Barry. Rick
- 42:16Speaker 1: Barry was a very, very good basketball player. Rick Barry
- 42:19Speaker 1: was one of the best white basketball players of all time.
- 42:22Speaker 1: And people hate Rick Barry's guts. It is amazing how
- 42:26Speaker 1: much people hate Rick Barry. It's just stunning, right? But anyway,
- 42:33Speaker 1: Rick Barry, when he retired from the NBA, was the
- 42:37Speaker 1: all-time leading leader in free throw percentage. And he shot
- 42:41Speaker 1: free throws underhand. That's also known as shooting free throws
- 42:46Speaker 1: granny style. You can look it up on the internet
- 42:48Speaker 1: if you have not seen it before, but you will
- 42:51Speaker 1: look at the way that those free throws are shot
- 42:54Speaker 1: and you will say to yourself, man, I ain't about
- 42:56Speaker 1: to do that shit, right? And so there have been
- 43:00Speaker 1: a few legendarily poor free throw shooters over the course
- 43:05Speaker 1: of NBA history who are also great players. Two that
- 43:08Speaker 1: immediately jump out are Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O'Neal. Wilt
- 43:13Speaker 1: Chamberlain tried everything when it came to shooting free throws,
- 43:16Speaker 1: including underhand free throws, which as I have read, he
- 43:19Speaker 1: was better at shooting free throws underhand than he was
- 43:21Speaker 1: any other way. Shaquille O'Neal, for all of his free
- 43:24Speaker 1: throw struggles, never went to shoot the free throws underhand.
- 43:28Speaker 1: And Rick Barry would always make the point that none
- 43:30Speaker 1: of these guys would shoot free throws underhand because they're
- 43:34Speaker 1: afraid that it will make them look bad even though
- 43:38Speaker 1: it is a truly effective method for shooting free throws.
- 43:42Speaker 1: And he always speaks with a measure of judgment of
- 43:45Speaker 1: the guys because they're just afraid that they're going to
- 43:49Speaker 1: look bad. And other people will do the same thing
- 43:51Speaker 1: and be like, it doesn't matter as long as you
- 43:53Speaker 1: make the shots.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Why are you so worried about looking bad?
- 43:56Speaker 1: But if you didn't think that looking bad mattered at all,
- 44:01Speaker 1: then you would tell a guy like Tim Duncan, who
- 44:03Speaker 1: at points was a mere 60% free throw shooter.
- 44:06Speaker 2: If you could go from.
- 44:07Speaker 1: 60 to 80 as a free throw shooter just by
- 44:10Speaker 1: shooting underhand free throws, you should do that, right? But
- 44:15Speaker 1: nobody tells the 60% free throw shooter that he should
- 44:18Speaker 1: do that. And you know why they never tell him that?
- 44:21Speaker 2: Because they know that shit looks ridiculous. You understand what
- 44:26Speaker 2: I'm saying?
- 44:26Speaker 1: Like deep down inside of you. You know why they
- 44:30Speaker 1: don't do that. You think that you should only shoot
- 44:34Speaker 1: underhand free throws, literally, if nothing else works. And it
- 44:38Speaker 1: is because you fundamentally understand that it looks ridiculous.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Okay?
- 44:45Speaker 1: So let's talk about pepper spray. Ryan, I've never known
- 44:50Speaker 1: a man to walk around carrying pepper spray. Like this
- 44:53Speaker 1: gentleman walks around carrying pepper spray.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Never known it.
- 44:57Speaker 1: But, We all acknowledge that pepper spray is an effective
- 45:03Speaker 1: deterrent in the face of violence.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Why?
- 45:06Speaker 1: Because we view women as defenseless under these circumstances, right?
- 45:10Speaker 1: I don't mean to insult or offend anybody, but that's
- 45:12Speaker 1: how we talk about women. And we worry when women
- 45:15Speaker 1: walk out in the dark and all of these things
- 45:17Speaker 1: for good reason, right? And what do we send them
- 45:19Speaker 1: out there with? We don't send them out there with guns.
- 45:22Speaker 1: We don't send them out there with knives. We send
- 45:24Speaker 1: them out there with pepper spray. You yourself feel like
- 45:29Speaker 1: you can at least fight. You don't think that she
- 45:31Speaker 1: can fight, but you feel like that pepper spray or
- 45:35Speaker 1: that mace will do the job. If it would do
- 45:38Speaker 1: the job for her, generally speaking, would it not do
- 45:43Speaker 1: the job for a man?
- 45:45Speaker 2: Maybe we could cut down on all these guns.
- 45:47Speaker 1: That cats have on the street because you could protect
- 45:49Speaker 1: yourself with this pepper.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Spray, which again, we have acknowledged, we believe is effective.
- 45:56Speaker 4: You know how effective pepper spray is? They send people
- 46:00Speaker 4: out on it on hikes to protect them from bears. Correct.
- 46:04Speaker 1: But can you imagine what you would say if you
- 46:06Speaker 1: found out that your homeboy was out here in these
- 46:09Speaker 1: streets hitting people with pepper spray? Stay away before I
- 46:13Speaker 1: hit you with some mace. We would be so mean
- 46:16Speaker 1: to that man. We would be so terrible to that man.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Pepper spray is the underhanded free throw.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Of self-defense.
- 46:29Speaker 4: We gotta say you landed the plane. The seatbelt sign
- 46:36Speaker 4: was on. I was concerned. But, you know, we took
- 46:41Speaker 4: some bumps, but you ended it.
- 46:42Speaker 2: It is an amazing thought.
- 46:45Speaker 7: Why don't we all just walk around with pepper spray?
- 46:48Speaker 7: We'd be all right if we all walked around with
- 46:50Speaker 7: pepper spray. But we're not going to do that because
- 46:53Speaker 7: we ain't about to be. We'd rather get robbed. We'd
- 46:56Speaker 7: rather get pistol whipped.
- 46:58Speaker 2: We'd rather get our asses kicked than to be like,
- 47:00Speaker 2: hit him in the face with that pepper.
- 47:03Speaker 4: And no one touched me yeah he he.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Fell back after that now all of that said the
- 47:08Speaker 2: counter argument in this case would be well.
- 47:10Speaker 4: This is a one-time pepper spray was not so effective it.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Did not take mark sanchez down which gets.
- 47:15Speaker 4: Us back you can stop a bear but you can't
- 47:18Speaker 4: stop mark sanchez right.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Which gets me back to the other thing.
- 47:22Speaker 1: It's not good when your behavior makes us ask the
- 47:26Speaker 1: question damn boy you've been smoking dust.
- 47:35Speaker 4: All right, we're going to shift gears here. ESPN and
- 47:39Speaker 4: The Athletic have reported the Big Ten is discussing a
- 47:41Speaker 4: $ 2 billion deal with private equity. This would include a
- 47:45Speaker 4: 10-year extension of the league's grant of rights. The private
- 47:48Speaker 4: capital deal and the grant of rights extension have been
- 47:50Speaker 4: discussed for months in multiple forms. There is support from
- 47:54Speaker 4: nearly the entire league, with a few of the biggest brands,
- 47:57Speaker 4: including Ohio State and Michigan, still in discussions. They want
- 48:00Speaker 4: to get unanimous support before a vote. Bo, what were
- 48:04Speaker 4: your thoughts when you heard this?
- 48:05Speaker 1: Remember that time private equity made something better?
- 48:13Speaker 2: What else is there to say, right?
- 48:16Speaker 1: Nobody remembers that time that private equity made... Private equity
- 48:20Speaker 1: helps private equity.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Those are the only people.
- 48:24Speaker 1: I can't believe these people are so thirsty for money
- 48:26Speaker 1: that they can't acknowledge that very basic point. This is
- 48:30Speaker 1: a mechanism for properties that are in distress. Does the
- 48:34Speaker 1: Big Ten look like it's in distress to you?
- 48:37Speaker 4: The Big Ten is getting money from Fox, CBS, NBC.
- 48:42Speaker 4: They have their own network.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 48:44Speaker 4: And they could go to these TV places and get
- 48:48Speaker 4: more money for their rights at any time. And, I mean,
- 48:52Speaker 4: they always have, you know, the break glass case for
- 48:55Speaker 4: Merge Guard of trying to go get Notre Dame.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Yes, and they've already killed off competition other than the
- 49:01Speaker 1: SEC in– So many ways, right? Like they've done this.
- 49:07Speaker 1: The problem to me with bringing something like private equity in,
- 49:11Speaker 1: and I probably said, if I haven't said this year before,
- 49:13Speaker 1: I'm sure I've said it in other places, but the
- 49:15Speaker 1: problem is that this is not a profit maximizing industry.
- 49:19Speaker 2: This is, people are in this for fun.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Yeah, there's money that needs to be made in order
- 49:25Speaker 1: to keep putting money back in, in order to keep
- 49:26Speaker 1: things competitive. But people blow money on this. People give
- 49:30Speaker 1: money away to make this happen. Private equity is in
- 49:33Speaker 1: it to get their money back. This crazy world doesn't
- 49:38Speaker 1: work Like that. The interest of all these things are incompatible.
- 49:43Speaker 1: And then we get back to what I said before.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Remember that time private equity made something better? Because I don't.
- 49:50Speaker 4: And finally, Dave Chappelle made some comments that made news
- 49:54Speaker 4: while headlining Saudi Arabia's comedy festival on Saturday. He made
- 49:59Speaker 4: some controversial remarks. Right now in America, they say if
- 50:02Speaker 4: you talk about Charlie Kirk, you get canceled. I don't
- 50:04Speaker 4: know if that's true, but I'm going to find out.
- 50:07Speaker 4: It's easier to talk here than it is in America. Bo,
- 50:10Speaker 4: your thoughts.
- 50:12Speaker 2: I cannot.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Believe.
- 50:17Speaker 1: I can't believe that these super rich people went to
- 50:19Speaker 1: Saudi Arabia.
- 50:20Speaker 2: Just to get this check.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Right. Like you have to understand the way that this
- 50:25Speaker 1: is going to undercoat whatever it is that you say
- 50:28Speaker 1: about yourself upon your return.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Like, am I crazy?
- 50:32Speaker 1: I can't be the only person that sees how you're
- 50:34Speaker 1: just setting, like Bill.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Burr, remember that routine? I don't know if it was
- 50:37Speaker 2: a routine, but Bill Burr.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Talked about Beyonce and basically how she's just all in
- 50:41Speaker 1: it for the capitalism and everything else.
- 50:42Speaker 2: And I'm like, brother, you just did this. You just like,
- 50:47Speaker 2: you can't, you can't.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Ryan, I feel like I'm not making sense because it
- 50:53Speaker 1: just feels so obvious that this is such a ridiculous thing.
- 50:56Speaker 4: I mean, I sort of get it for people like
- 50:59Speaker 4: Louis C.K., who are, you know, kind of sort of
- 51:02Speaker 4: ostracized from popular society. But Dave Chappelle is still selling
- 51:06Speaker 4: out arenas. He's still putting out, you know, Netflix specials. Yeah.
- 51:10Speaker 2: And how about this?
- 51:12Speaker 1: You could go over there and feel like you could
- 51:14Speaker 1: talk about Charlie Kirk and you couldn't talk about Charlie
- 51:17Speaker 1: Kirk in America.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 51:19Speaker 1: You know who you could talk about in America that
- 51:20Speaker 1: you can't talk about in Saudi Arabia?
- 51:22Speaker 2: The crown prince. That's who.
- 51:26Speaker 1: What none of them allowed to make no jokes about
- 51:29Speaker 1: the government. over there or to make jokes about the play.
- 51:33Speaker 1: That was not on the board. So I feel freer
- 51:36Speaker 1: to talk about this than I do in America. Saudi
- 51:39Speaker 1: people feel freer to talk about they shit in America
- 51:41Speaker 1: than they do over there.
- 51:42Speaker 2: What is your point? You see what I mean? Like,
- 51:46Speaker 2: it's not, you're not going to make me believe.
- 51:48Speaker 1: And I have been someone who has no problem being
- 51:50Speaker 1: critical of my own country because I think you earned
- 51:52Speaker 1: the right with citizenship to be able to do that.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Hey man, you're not going to tell me that they
- 51:57Speaker 1: free you over there than over here. You're not selling
- 52:01Speaker 1: me on this. You're not doing it. And so to go,
- 52:05Speaker 1: maybe I need to hear the tone of the routine, right?
- 52:07Speaker 1: Maybe I just don't understand what exactly it was. But
- 52:11Speaker 1: I was a bit revolted by some of the people
- 52:15Speaker 1: that just couldn't pass up that money.
- 52:16Speaker 4: All these people who go and talk on and on
- 52:19Speaker 4: about free speech and cancel culture go and praise the
- 52:23Speaker 4: crown prince of Saudi Arabia is just going to leave.
- 52:26Speaker 4: a poor taste. No.
- 52:28Speaker 1: And some of you, it's going to interfere with the
- 52:29Speaker 1: way your work lands. Cause I ain't really trying to
- 52:31Speaker 1: hear that shit from.
- 52:32Speaker 4: All right, Bo, the voicemail line is open. We got
- 52:40Speaker 4: a few good ones. Here's our first.
- 52:42Speaker 5: All right.
- 52:43Speaker 6: Hello. Thank you very much for the pod. First of all,
- 52:46Speaker 6: it gets me through my day sometimes, but Mr. Jones
- 52:50Speaker 6: and cast, I would just like to ask, when do
- 52:53Speaker 6: you know you've had enough of a city? when do
- 52:57Speaker 6: you know it's time for you to take your next venture, uh,
- 53:01Speaker 6: and your next jump in life?
- 53:04Speaker 3: I'm in Tampa, like Tampa.
- 53:08Speaker 5: Um, and when do you know you're ready to go
- 53:12Speaker 5: to New York? I guess that's a whole second question.
- 53:16Speaker 5: All right.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Peace and love.
- 53:18Speaker 5: And again, thank you for the pod.
- 53:21Speaker 2: Brother.
- 53:21Speaker 1: I gotta be honest with you. Um, The biggest way
- 53:24Speaker 1: that you know you're ready for New York is if
- 53:26Speaker 1: you have received a raise. That's the pick when you
- 53:33Speaker 1: talk about coming to New York. I'll tell you this
- 53:35Speaker 1: about New York, too. Ryan, you live here about as
- 53:39Speaker 1: long as I have. The thing about New York is
- 53:41Speaker 1: Don't come up here because you like it. You're not
- 53:43Speaker 1: going to stay if you like it. You're not going
- 53:45Speaker 1: to stay if you really like it. You got to
- 53:46Speaker 1: love it.
- 53:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you got to be committed.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a decision. It'll pay off in
- 53:52Speaker 2: a whole lot of different ways.
- 53:54Speaker 1: But I feel like I've generally left cities when something
- 53:59Speaker 1: work-wise took me to another place. I can't pretend my
- 54:03Speaker 1: decisions on when to do those things was really that
- 54:06Speaker 1: voluntary about me taking things by the way. I wanted
- 54:09Speaker 1: to be in New York when I came here, but
- 54:11Speaker 1: it was a lot of circumstances that brought it together.
- 54:14Speaker 2: But I do know what it's like when you feel
- 54:16Speaker 2: like you've outgrown a city, right?
- 54:19Speaker 1: Where it's just like, I can't, can you still do
- 54:22Speaker 1: the things that you want to do in that city?
- 54:25Speaker 1: Can you achieve the goals that you want to reach
- 54:27Speaker 1: while staying in that city, right? Like, does it challenge you?
- 54:31Speaker 1: Does it excite you? Does it, does it, make you
- 54:34Speaker 1: a better person. Like, what about being in that place
- 54:37Speaker 1: makes it good for you? You know, so especially if
- 54:40Speaker 1: you're a person with a family, then we're having a
- 54:41Speaker 1: different discussion, right? Because you're doing math on a lot
- 54:44Speaker 1: of other things. But if you're not, what are you
- 54:47Speaker 1: getting from being in that city? And if the thing
- 54:49Speaker 1: you're getting primarily out of it is just comfort, then
- 54:52Speaker 1: you need to ask yourself, is there someplace that could
- 54:54Speaker 1: challenge you a little bit more?
- 54:55Speaker 4: All right, Bo, here's our next one.
- 54:57Speaker 5: Hey, Bo. What's up, y'all?
- 55:00Speaker 3: This is Evan from Hawaii. Um, I just want to
- 55:04Speaker 3: say that I got to ask a question because I
- 55:08Speaker 3: currently work in a space where the person who is
- 55:11Speaker 3: like the leadership of my organization is someone that feels
- 55:16Speaker 3: extremely underqualified to be in their position and not like, oh,
- 55:21Speaker 3: they're just kind of maybe not, they didn't hit all
- 55:24Speaker 3: the wickets.
- 55:25Speaker 4: No, I mean like I've.
- 55:27Speaker 3: Been doing my thing for seven years, you know, active
- 55:31Speaker 3: duty and and I'm in a position where I know
- 55:34Speaker 3: I'm not the top dog, but I've seen a thing
- 55:37Speaker 3: or two. This person is somehow above everybody, and their
- 55:42Speaker 3: experience is basically the equivalent of that of my first
- 55:46Speaker 3: two years in the Navy, in the military, and yet
- 55:50Speaker 3: they're somehow able to make decisions on people cutting checks.
- 55:55Speaker 3: I'm not really sure how far I can go. I'm
- 55:59Speaker 3: not going to say names per se, but Let's just
- 56:02Speaker 3: say if this person has no haters, then I'm dead.
- 56:05Speaker 5: All right.
- 56:07Speaker 3: That being said, I got to ask from your perspective.
- 56:12Speaker 2: Is he asking me if he needs to quit his job?
- 56:15Speaker 4: How do you do with a terrible boss?
- 56:22Speaker 1: Can you apply for a job somewhere else? Did he
- 56:25Speaker 1: say he was in the Navy? Is there another Navy
- 56:27Speaker 1: that you could apply to?
- 56:29Speaker 4: I'm not sure how that works if they're secondary navies.
- 56:33Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 56:35Speaker 1: That is always a tough one, though, when you are
- 56:37Speaker 1: working for somebody that you don't respect, basically, whose judgment.
- 56:42Speaker 2: You're not able to trust.
- 56:44Speaker 1: And the only solution is to go find another place
- 56:46Speaker 1: to work. What you see is not going to change. Now,
- 56:50Speaker 1: unless you want to set up some elaborate plan to
- 56:52Speaker 1: get that person fired, which I do not recommend, you
- 56:55Speaker 1: just got to go work somewhere else.
- 56:57Speaker 4: All right, Bo, here's our last one.
- 56:59Speaker 5: Hey, Bo, this is Greg in Georgia. And we all know,
- 57:05Speaker 5: everyone who listens to your show, know that you are
- 57:08Speaker 5: a print scholar of sorts. And I wanted to ask you,
- 57:12Speaker 5: I don't know if you brought this up on your
- 57:13Speaker 5: show before, about the Purple Rain musical. I wonder if,
- 57:22Speaker 5: I feel like we're in the era that Prince's legacy
- 57:25Speaker 5: is being a little bastardized. So with the Purple Rain
- 57:30Speaker 5: musical coming to Broadway, I think this is going to
- 57:34Speaker 5: be a flop. But I want to know your take
- 57:38Speaker 5: on it, if you're even a Broadway person. But the
- 57:44Speaker 5: film being translated to the stage, I don't know if
- 57:48Speaker 5: it's going to work. Just want to know what you think.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Yeah, so the estate does a lot of things that
- 57:54Speaker 1: I don't necessarily like. I think Purple Rain going to
- 58:00Speaker 1: Broadway is a reasonable transition and basically in line with
- 58:06Speaker 1: the activities of a lot of acts in this fashion.
- 58:11Speaker 1: Like there's the Michael Jackson Broadway show, for example.
- 58:15Speaker 5: Like....
- 58:17Speaker 1: I don't think that the idea of moving this is
- 58:21Speaker 1: a bastardization of the legacy.
- 58:23Speaker 2: I don't think that.
- 58:25Speaker 1: The music will be interesting, and the bands they put
- 58:28Speaker 1: together to get all that done, all that's fine. My
- 58:30Speaker 1: question is this. When is the last time you guys
- 58:34Speaker 1: watched Purple Rain? And the reason I ask when is
- 58:37Speaker 1: the last time you watched Purple Rain is that that
- 58:40Speaker 1: is a somewhat indefensible script.
- 58:44Speaker 3: Um.
- 58:45Speaker 1: Many of you have probably read about my buddy Ezra
- 58:48Speaker 1: Edelman directed a documentary on Prince that was supposed to
- 58:52Speaker 1: run on Netflix. And a significant part of the movie,
- 58:58Speaker 1: I have not seen it myself, was about Prince being
- 59:01Speaker 1: violent toward women. Jill Jones is an example that immediately
- 59:05Speaker 1: jumps out. And the estate put the kibosh on it
- 59:09Speaker 1: coming out. And Ezra's thing was he felt like he
- 59:12Speaker 1: was humanizing his subject, but more or less it was
- 59:15Speaker 1: an exploration of the man in totality. I understand completely
- 59:20Speaker 1: why it is that the estate would not have wanted
- 59:23Speaker 1: that to come out. But the only thing I stopped
- 59:25Speaker 1: and thought about was, well, goddamn, y'all already made a
- 59:28Speaker 1: movie about this and it made him a superstar. Like,
- 59:31Speaker 1: we don't really talk about how crazy the idea of
- 59:33Speaker 1: A Higher Purple Rain is. It's this guy who writes
- 59:37Speaker 1: these songs that nobody likes.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Except in real life, they are smash hits.
- 59:41Speaker 1: But he's got all this music that nobody likes, except
- 59:45Speaker 1: he's got this bad habit because his dad used to
- 59:48Speaker 1: beat his mom that he then puts hands on his girl.
- 59:52Speaker 1: And then finally he has one last chance where he's
- 59:55Speaker 1: about to hit her again.
- 59:56Speaker 2: And then she's like, go ahead and hit me. I
- 59:57Speaker 2: dare you.
- 59:58Speaker 1: And then he decides not to hit her. And then
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: he goes and plays Purple Rain. And that shit is
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: so fire that we completely forget that he had been
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: beating his girl the whole movie and everything is okay.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: And everybody dances. Maybe that's an.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Unfortunate metaphor for how all of this stuff works, but
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: that was what.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: That movie was. It is amazing that it became the
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: movie that it.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Did in terms of pop culture and everything else, because
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: when you stop and think about it, what crazy ideas
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: they are putting forth, even though in many cases it is.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: How it works.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: But there's nothing heroic or heartwarming at all about that.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: I am not exactly sure how people want to see
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: that on Broadway. Like, You're basically taking the Tina Turner musical,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: except it's not, it's the same exact musical, except it's
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: not about her, it's about Ike. Who wants to see that?
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: But ladies and gentlemen, It'll be a really hard transition there.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us here
