- 0:00Many years ago, tough pigs.com be got a great tradition of
- 0:05arguing about the Muppets on the internet now.
- 0:09Tough pigs has assembled a team of Muppet experts from all over
- 0:14the world for a summit on the state of the Muppets.
- 0:18This is a great Hello and welcome to the fall
- 0:402022. Hello friends.
- 0:52Thank you. Hello.
- 0:53And welcome to the fall 2022, edition of the great Muppet
- 0:56fandom panel from tough pigs.com.
- 0:59This is a panel discussion show during which you'll hear
- 1:01highlights from the Henson headlines, discussed by a panel
- 1:04of the internet. Stop Muppet experts.
- 1:06It's sort of like we're doing a quarterly report on Jim,
- 1:08Henson's characters and Legacy, except we're not judging
- 1:11anything by how profitable it is.
- 1:12We can only judge quality. And even then, who are we to
- 1:15judge, we can't do that. This is nothing like a quarterly
- 1:17report. How dare you say that?
- 1:18It's just a big picture, overview of what's going on with
- 1:20the Muppets explained. Baited by a panel that changes
- 1:23from episode to episode. Each of our panelists has
- 1:26broader discussion question for us and I prepared one as well.
- 1:29These could be about anything related to Jim Henson to The
- 1:31Muppets, but our main topics will be the Muppets at d23
- 1:35Sesame Street, the musical and Craig Simmons, new book about
- 1:37salmon, friends, appropriately called salmon friends.
- 1:41Let's introduce the panelists from the tough pics.com team,
- 1:44he's the one and only genuine, nobody back guaranteed chain
- 1:47Keating. Just like that, guy said, I
- 1:51don't know his name, but he seems well, next, I just stole
- 1:54her title as the newest member of the tough.
- 1:56Big steam, good grief, the comedian's up, Beth cook.
- 1:59Hey, happy to be here and to pigs co-owner that most popular,
- 2:03and appealing platter of Ryan row.
- 2:06Yep. Hi Ryan.
- 2:08He was correct when he said that, that was my name and I'm
- 2:11JD Hansel. Thank you Beth.
- 2:16As I just mentioned, you're relatively new to tough pigs,
- 2:19but it feels like you've already become such a big part of what
- 2:23tough pigs does. Can you tell us what
- 2:25experiences, you've had since joining that stand out as
- 2:27highlights to you and are you able to talk about what's coming
- 2:31up in 2023 without giving too much away?
- 2:36Well, first, thank you so much. That's so flattering.
- 2:40Honestly, the coolest parts. So far was, when I got to hang
- 2:47out with Joe and Julia in person.
- 2:50Joe and his wife were taking a road trip.
- 2:52And when they swung through Portland, we went out to brunch
- 2:57together. And there was surprisingly
- 2:59little Muppet talk, but there was a lot of talk about TV in
- 3:04general and media analysis and it was fantastic.
- 3:11Yeah, absolutely connecting. NG with all of the other tough
- 3:15pigs spokes on a more professional level has been
- 3:20fantastic. That's so weird.
- 3:22Because tough fix people. Famously hate each other.
- 3:25Can't stand talking to each other.
- 3:26You never would dare speak to one another.
- 3:29There's not a word yet for old friends.
- 3:31Who can't stand each other Ryan on moving right along?
- 3:35You talk about Muppet movies, two minutes at a time, which two
- 3:38minutes of Muppets in a movie are the best two minutes.
- 3:40Who. I mean, I could actually, I
- 3:45could probably narrow it down to Something in the great Muppet.
- 3:48Caper if I really looked at that our list of two-minute Clips
- 3:51because that's my favorite Muppet movie.
- 3:53And there are scenes and that that I just considered to be
- 3:57like such such such a distillation of what the Muppets
- 4:02do. So something in the great
- 4:04Muppet. Caper Ryan, are you telling me
- 4:06that you're a caper boy? Yes, I believe you coined that
- 4:10phrase. Phrase when you ever guest on
- 4:12our podcast recently and yeah I did I'm a capable boy.
- 4:15I'm sticking with it and I'm forcing it upon people whether
- 4:18they like it or not. Hey Shane what's the most Muppet
- 4:22ational shot you've ever tweeted from the one Muppet ational shot
- 4:24account? Oh, that's a good question.
- 4:40Gonzo with his nose. Stuck in the elevator from the
- 4:42great Muppet. Caper baby.
- 4:44Oh, you're capable way too, right?
- 4:46I'm a keeper, man. Oh, oh, oh well, excuse us.
- 4:52Excuse us. It is now, time for the great
- 4:55Muppet. Question panelists, are you
- 4:58ready? Yes, baby.
- 5:00Wait, this episode's. Great Muppet question is what
- 5:04stories and secrets from Muppet history?
- 5:06Do you hope you'll learn more about in the next books by
- 5:08Craig? Hammond, you know, I would like
- 5:10to learn who this, Jim Henson guy is because he, I don't know
- 5:15if you've read this news book, salmon friends, a story of Jim
- 5:18Henson's first television show. Whoo.
- 5:21But this Jim Henson guy. He's on the cover, his name is
- 5:24all in like almost every page of this thing, right?
- 5:27But like I still don't get who this guy is.
- 5:30What did he do? What was his purpose?
- 5:32I don't have a good understanding of who he is, and
- 5:35I hope Craig can elaborate on that, in future installments.
- 5:39I think it's one of those stories that assumes you're
- 5:41going to know why the main character is so important
- 5:44without feeling that they actually have to delve into who
- 5:48they are as a person, or what they did with their lives.
- 5:51It's a very frustrating thing. Exactly.
- 5:53It's like Spider-Man 3 assumed, I saw Spider-Man 1 & 2.
- 5:57Yeah. And Jim Henson, just figures out
- 5:59how to do all these things on his own like, Jim Henson is such
- 6:02a Mary Sue and that book, I don't even know what to say to
- 6:05that. Ryan?
- 6:07What stories and secrets? A muppet history do you?
- 6:09Hope will learn more about in the next books by Craig shamon?
- 6:12Yeah you know there's a lot of information out there.
- 6:14The salmon Friends book, I think is like 600 Pages.
- 6:17It has so much information about the early phase of Jim Henson's
- 6:20career. You know we've heard another
- 6:22books and things about Jim Henson's life and had the
- 6:25careers and lives of his collaborators.
- 6:28But you know what we really haven't heard anything about is
- 6:31how Jim Henson and his collaborators decorated their
- 6:34bathrooms like what what color were gems show?
- 6:38Shower curtains did did Jerry juhl have little decorative
- 6:43soaps next to his sink? What color were done?
- 6:45Celine's hand towels. Did did Frank Oz ever have those
- 6:49little adhesive slip resistant flowers that you stick to the
- 6:54bottom of your bathtub? These are the things that we
- 6:57have always wanted to know but we still don't know.
- 6:59No one is telling the story that they're it hasn't been in a
- 7:02museum exhibition. It hasn't been in a documentary
- 7:05nothing. So really what I want is is like
- 7:08a nine Hundred page book all about the Muppet people and
- 7:12their bathrooms and it should probably come with a download
- 7:16code for like some kind of VR app where you can get a virtual
- 7:21tour of all of their bathrooms and then maybe also just an
- 7:26animal toothbrush because I had one when I was a kid and it was
- 7:29cool and I liked it, I want another one.
- 7:31I agree. Jim Henson's linoleum tiles
- 7:34should be hanging up in the Museum of the moving image.
- 7:37Yeah, yeah. We're style La linoleum Beth.
- 7:42So unlike every other woman in her 30s, apparently I'm really
- 7:48not a fan of True Crime. But here's what I need, I need a
- 7:53true-crime documentary about whoever Designed greenlit and
- 8:01created the specific style of human puppets used in the ghost
- 8:08of Fastener Hall and Jim Henson's Mother Goose stories.
- 8:13These unnerving creatures from Hell have Wreaked havoc on our
- 8:21psyches for decades now and I need to know who are these
- 8:26people that brought these monstrosities to life, and are
- 8:30they currently being held accountable for their crimes?
- 8:32Wow, I want to sing a documentary or like a
- 8:35dramatization. We're very dramatic music plays
- 8:38while you see one of the puppet Workshop people and slow motion
- 8:41sculpting one of these heads definitely both.
- 8:44So like the the documentary style with you know,
- 8:47interspersed little reenactments reenactment Yeah.
- 8:50Yeah, I like it. Well, then back can be only
- 8:53buffets in the building perfect. We'll get Steve Martin back on
- 8:57board, sure. But then tough pigs does
- 8:59actually have to do the True Crime podcast.
- 9:03No no no don't don't, don't worry about that.
- 9:05Part topics doesn't have to handle that.
- 9:07The Muppet mindset has that come?
- 9:08Oh, okay. All right, we're going.
- 9:11Okay, Mabel. I'm I've been assured that they
- 9:13will handle all of that aspect. Yeah, I actually only agreed to
- 9:17join tough pigs on the condition that we didn't have.
- 9:20Handle anything that had to do with ghosts.
- 9:22After Hall that was all on them, up in mindset, it's in your
- 9:25contract, absolutely Beth. Is it not in your contract?
- 9:30You got a contract, never mind, never mind you.
- 9:34There's everyone loves Twizzlers.
- 9:37I got a per diem. I think we did review like four
- 9:41episodes of after Holland. We were considering reviewing
- 9:45all of them and then we realize that nobody really wanted to
- 9:48watch them all and nobody wanted to read about them.
- 9:50Also, I'm sorry we doing exactly that.
- 9:53It's true. You and I did ours together
- 9:56Ryan. Yes yes exactly.
- 9:58We did not enjoy it. No Beth.
- 10:01How far are you into that show? I have gone through episode
- 10:08three so far once you get used to it is not as horrifying as I
- 10:15might have. Thought I think honestly, it's a
- 10:19wasted. Opportunity, because the concept
- 10:22is great. And I love that.
- 10:25It's an entire show just dedicated to music and what it
- 10:29is and how it works and how you make it, and who can make it.
- 10:32The funniest moment was when I was I always have the captions
- 10:36on and in my first watch of episode 1.
- 10:41I was like, okay, this is the opening song.
- 10:44These are the lyrics to that opening song.
- 10:46Episode two different lyrics, huh?
- 10:51It didn't have anything about like squelching in there.
- 10:54I don't know what you heard, she wasn't watching, stranger
- 10:57things. What you heard was exactly the
- 11:00same, but it was very clear that in episode 1, those lyrics were
- 11:05transcribed by a human being and an episode to those lyrics were
- 11:09transcribed by an AI. So did it get the lyrics totally
- 11:14wrong. Not totally wrong.
- 11:16But every once in a while you'd get a line that was just not a
- 11:21thing that anyone would ever say Yeah, that's always fun.
- 11:25Have you seen the inner tube pilot that eventually led to the
- 11:31Jim Henson? Our, who not yet.
- 11:34I'm also re-watch any demands an hour, okay?
- 11:36Because that's probably the peak of those really weird-looking,
- 11:41sculpted, Muppet heads, because those are very unsettling, those
- 11:45characters are not, I don't think it helps that the only
- 11:48copy of that that's out. There is so like, Poor quality.
- 11:52He has like a copy of a copy. That was leaked from somewhere.
- 11:55Yeah. So I mean best way to see those
- 11:59puppets. If the characters are blurred
- 12:01and pixelated out. Isn't that a mercy?
- 12:04I think that might be kind of. Yeah, maybe it would be worse if
- 12:07we could see them more clearly. No, I want.
- 12:10I want glitch in 1080P full glitches fine because he's just
- 12:13like a fuzzy green. Computer graphic.
- 12:16I want Crasher in 1080P. Yikes.
- 12:20Thanks for playing along. Our real great Muppet question
- 12:23is this should the Muppet company's focus more on,
- 12:26special, in-person events. Like, what they've been doing
- 12:29lately or dedicate their time to Productions?
- 12:31That are more accessible to folks who can't travel to these
- 12:34events. I'm not asking this question
- 12:36with any bias as someone who wasn't able to go to the things
- 12:41were discussing is that a slam at me because I appear to be the
- 12:44only one who went to end. Well, I didn't go to d23 but I'm
- 12:47the one who went to the other ones.
- 12:48It's not a slam, but it is a nudge.
- 12:52So, I am a person who until recently lived in New York City,
- 12:57where a lot of these in person events happen and then I moved
- 13:01away from New York city. So now, I am not.
- 13:04We're all of these in-person events happen and I like I
- 13:10really do miss it because I normally I was like I used to
- 13:16live in Queens. I was seven subway stops away
- 13:19from the Museum of the moving image.
- 13:21So I could get to these things so easily.
- 13:24And now I would have to book a flight on a plane and go to the
- 13:28airport and get on a plane etc etc.
- 13:32But also at the height of the pandemic, when we were all in
- 13:36lockdown, there were a lot of these online virtual events
- 13:41either things that were like live on zoom.
- 13:43And anybody could come in and watch or things that were
- 13:46recorded and streamed later. So I think it would be Good.
- 13:51If there was something kind of in between the two, I understand
- 13:55why they are not streaming an event live from the Museum of
- 13:59the moving image because they want people to come and buy
- 14:02tickets, but I also think it would be great if they would
- 14:05record that and then stream it later.
- 14:08I would even pay to watch that stream at a later date.
- 14:13It could be up temporarily, it could be a permanently whatever.
- 14:17But yeah, I think that would be A compromise.
- 14:22Yeah. Now what kind of events are you
- 14:26pissed? Are you specifically referring
- 14:27to for this topic? Oh, that's a good question.
- 14:33Got a peek behind the curtain. He has a list that we can see.
- 14:37So something like that, Museum of the moving image event about
- 14:41the new, Craig Shemin book. That is sort of somewhat of a
- 14:44different animal than say, Sesame Street.
- 14:46The musical or the d23 Christmas, carol thing that they
- 14:51did, True. It's the Muppets probably do
- 14:56need to keep appearing in these places where characters are
- 15:00expected to appear. I think that we would all be
- 15:05annoyed if the Muppets didn't have enough Presence at d23 and
- 15:08in some respects, they didn't, we'll get to that.
- 15:10Well, and we have been annoyed in past years when they haven't
- 15:13been at d23. And, of course you want some
- 15:16Muppet Presence at Comic-Con, and in theory, you want.
- 15:22Up. It's on a stage in some way.
- 15:24We'll talk about whether or not this is the way in which we
- 15:27wanted it but also when a new book is coming out, I think I
- 15:33agree with Ryan that that is the kind of thing where it's like
- 15:36it's very neat to see that in person and it's really cool that
- 15:40there are events like these that can bring a lot of Muppet fans
- 15:42together in person. But I also really want to have
- 15:46access to some online version of this thing.
- 15:49Yeah. And there are occasionally Lee
- 15:52like there's the traveling Jim Henson Museum exhibition, where
- 15:56sometimes they'll have events in the cities where that travels to
- 16:02but I guess they can always say they probably know for sure that
- 16:07people will always come and buy enough tickets to an event in
- 16:11New York City or Los Angeles. Maybe there's less of a
- 16:14guarantee that people are going to show up in large crowds in I
- 16:20don't know. A Colorado or wherever, right?
- 16:24So all your beads 2010. Her in case.
- 16:28Diane, I love Denver. Yeah, no temper is great.
- 16:31But it's, I have a feeling it's probably not on the radar of the
- 16:35Muppet people or the Sesame people are then some people for
- 16:38Live Events. So I don't know, but it would
- 16:41still be nice. If every once in a while they
- 16:43would do a screening or a panel or something in another major
- 16:48city somewhere other than New York or LA.
- 16:52It's so weird that they don't go to Denver since they did a whole
- 16:55album and two specials about Denver.
- 16:57Oh yeah, they could take a Rocky Mountain holiday.
- 17:02Are the Rocky Mountains in Denver, Colorado?
- 17:05They're a bunch of places. I think that every time there is
- 17:08one of these big Muppet events. I see a lot of folks, online
- 17:13who's responses? Ah, I'll never get to go there.
- 17:17They never come to me but you also want them to be Able to
- 17:22come to someone somewhere because they are puppets, and
- 17:26those are really neat thing to experience in person.
- 17:28Oh yeah, even watching an event streaming on the internet, is
- 17:34not the same as seeing a puppet, but I mean, especially a muppet
- 17:38live in the room in front of you.
- 17:41I since since I feel like my question has been thoroughly
- 17:44dismantled. I am going to start steering
- 17:46this discussion towards Muppet news now, but before I do know,
- 17:51thank you for That that's fine. Chaos is appropriate on a muppet
- 17:54podcast before I do that. I'd like to remind everyone at
- 17:57home that were not covering all the Muppet news on this show.
- 18:00This isn't a weekly updates show so if you're looking for that
- 18:02listen to another podcast. However, if you'd like to stay
- 18:05up-to-date on everything happening in the Muppet world,
- 18:07as it's happening, make sure you're following tough pics.com
- 18:10on Twitter, Facebook, and wherever social networks are
- 18:13sold. I can't believe that we're not
- 18:15talking about that big huge announcement that happened after
- 18:19we recorded this episode. But before it got posted How can
- 18:22we know the thing is? I'm sure that that will happen.
- 18:28Yes, and that's a very stressful thing.
- 18:31I cannot believe that Miss Piggy.
- 18:34Did that on The Masked Singer. Wow.
- 18:38Yeah. That thing slack-jawed.
- 18:41I was, yeah. Yeah, and I think I heard that,
- 18:45that Jenny McCarthy is gonna sue her for that.
- 18:47So, I wouldn't I would not blame her.
- 18:50Yeah, sorry, that was actually, Ali.
- 18:52What I was going to say about that topic is that kind of
- 18:57middling ground between the Muppets doing things that have
- 19:02like digital access for everyone and the Muppets doing in-person
- 19:06events, that only a few people can attend is this?
- 19:11I get that the Muppets have to remain relevant and, you know,
- 19:16appear on current shows whether you're expecting or not.
- 19:20It's great. If it's just like, oh my gosh,
- 19:21there's a muppet on the great, bitter spanking show or whatever
- 19:26it is. Oh my God, that would be
- 19:27amazing. Okay, I'm crossing my fingers
- 19:28for that anyway. I haven't seen a lot of is
- 19:34making really good choices in which shows those are based on
- 19:39who on the show is gonna. Interact with the Muppets.
- 19:42Because just because the show is popular, doesn't mean it works.
- 19:45Well, with Muppet interactions, like, you can tell when the host
- 19:52is, you know, smoother than engaging when they're talking to
- 19:56the regular audience and then all of a sudden they're talking
- 19:59to a muppet and it's awkward and weird and feels We know what
- 20:04scripted, but it feels scripted. Yeah, it's okay Beth.
- 20:09You can say, holy moly, you know what you're talking about.
- 20:12Thank you. I had forgot.
- 20:13You don't have to hide it. You're not gonna know.
- 20:16I think it's not. Sometimes it's the writing
- 20:18though, right? Because that all those holy moly
- 20:21B were scripted right, eye. If they were, they said that
- 20:25seems like they were. That's good.
- 20:27Well, yeah, dramatically changing topics on September
- 20:3124th, Jim Henson's birthday. The Long awaited book, salmon
- 20:35friends, the story of Jim Henson's first television show,
- 20:37by Craig Chemin was finally released.
- 20:41Now to be clear, it was not, it was not that this was the story
- 20:44of Jim Henson's first television show, by Craig Shemin.
- 20:47This is the, the book is never mind.
- 20:50If you've had time to start looking through it, what do you
- 20:53all think about this book? Have you learned anything that's
- 20:56changed? How you think about the history
- 20:58of Jim Henson and the Muppets? The meaning of Jim Henson in The
- 21:01Muppets or just anything interesting.
- 21:03I haven't My hands on the book yet, I read through Anthony's
- 21:07book review, which was great. And yeah, I love that.
- 21:12We get to hear more from Jim's wife, as usually referred to
- 21:19Jane and how much she really had to do with the show, which I
- 21:24didn't know, I knew that she was involved with it.
- 21:26I knew that she was his Co Puppeteer, but I didn't realize
- 21:29how much she was involved and how much she contributed and
- 21:33that's Great. Yeah, her role has been
- 21:36downplayed in a lot of the history.
- 21:40You know, the retellings of the Muppets wear that like that, the
- 21:46salmon friends era kind of gets glossed over is like Jim Henson
- 21:48had a TV show in Washington DC and it kind of you don't really
- 21:52hear a lot about Jane Hansen, so that is a really good thing
- 21:56about the book. Well, I just like to learning
- 21:58all of these sort of, like, the way that they put the show
- 22:02together and like, yeah, It's about it like that.
- 22:06I don't want to give too much away, but you know, the moment,
- 22:08you know, you hear all about the monitor system that Jim sort of
- 22:12developed during that show, but when they were doing the early
- 22:15Wilkins, coffee commercials, but they were shooting that on film,
- 22:20and the technology didn't exist yet for the film camera to go to
- 22:24an external monitor. So they had to put up a giant
- 22:27mirror under the camera so they could get like an approximation
- 22:31of what this child look like. And like, you never.
- 22:34Father, that until reading this book.
- 22:36It's amazing that there's we know so much about Jim Henson.
- 22:42We have learned so much about Jim Henson and then this book
- 22:45comes along that is about 600 pages and it's so much stuff
- 22:48that we've never heard before. And I think Al there's a lot of
- 22:53overlap between Muppet nerds and people who are just general
- 22:58nerds for how entertainment is made, and there's so much stuff
- 23:02about it. It says, I think I've maybe said
- 23:05this on social media or elsewhere, but it's as much a
- 23:09history of how people figured out how to make TV in the early
- 23:15days as it is a history of the first Muppet production.
- 23:19So like the stuff about their they're in a hotel Auditorium on
- 23:23a stage and just they have one camera and they're Wheeling it
- 23:27around to different spots on the stage for every show that they
- 23:30have like I love that stuff. That's not even specific to The
- 23:33Muppets. To see that stuff up.
- 23:36So question about that almost 600 pages, is it mostly that
- 23:41kind of cool information or is it mostly pretty glossy photos
- 23:46or is it a good balance of the two bear?
- 23:50Bear? Are they say 150 photos?
- 23:53They are very spread out, especially in the second half of
- 23:58the book, which is the episode guide because there are only so
- 24:01many photos that they can like pinpoint too.
- 24:06Specific episodes of that era play the photos.
- 24:09They do have are really, really good.
- 24:12Can the episode guide is another?
- 24:13That's the kind of thing. We never thought we would get
- 24:15like yeah. All this stuff that was pretty
- 24:18much lost until Craig started. Researching the book from what I
- 24:21understand and add to your point before you know Muppet nerds and
- 24:26TV. Nerds, this is also white for
- 24:28music nerds because it's just like a big list of all these
- 24:33songs. Yeah.
- 24:34And like novelty track. Acts from the 50s and 60s, like
- 24:38they did Alvin and the Chipmunks songs on salmon, friends, who
- 24:42would have thought, Shane? Did you see anything exciting at
- 24:46the big release event for this book at the Museum of the moving
- 24:49image on? Henson day?
- 24:51Yes, I was there as was Johannes and various other Matthews,
- 24:55Doberman, and other luminaries from the Muppet fan World
- 24:58disrespect to everyone, you forgot to mention, wow, it
- 25:04really looking on on Twitter. And stuff.
- 25:06Like, it seems like a lot of people wear their, I think it
- 25:09was every once a very exciting new thing that's coming out.
- 25:15And then I think also because there was like at least a year
- 25:18when the Museum of the moving image was essentially closed.
- 25:22That is seems like yeah, the first really big event that
- 25:25they've had their was like at least 100 people like yeah,
- 25:29somehow word got out about this one.
- 25:31Like because I people from from other states were coming to New
- 25:35York Like just like, like planning trips just to go to
- 25:38this event. I thought, Bob McGrath was
- 25:41there, he was there exciting? Yes, I was somehow, I was one of
- 25:46three people who was there with a Kermit, the gorf T-shirt
- 25:49somehow, which is highly improbable.
- 25:54Well, none of that. Kind of event though, we did get
- 25:57to see the world premiere quote-unquote of the long-lost.
- 26:02Salmon Friends episode, that's what I was going to ask about.
- 26:04That was touted. Hand and it was not something
- 26:08you would have expected because it was an animated episode 0.
- 26:11So there was no puppets in it at all.
- 26:14It was a spoken word like jadus track called Miss cone.
- 26:17And it's about this guy sort of describing his love for a woman
- 26:22Miss cone and it's all done. And with these cut out shapes,
- 26:26it's gonna be like, if you seen any other like, Jim Henson like
- 26:28stop motion animation. It's kind of like that lately.
- 26:32Really Sesame Street animations? The, yeah, with the, yeah, with
- 26:35Like the paint and everything. Right.
- 26:37And like, moving cut out shapes. It was like that and I thought
- 26:41it was adorable, and I'm so glad that they found it.
- 26:44Do you think they were people? When that episode aired who were
- 26:46like, what do they do? Like, what is Jim Henson's deal
- 26:50with? He should stick to puppets.
- 26:51Why is he doing this animation? I think that's in the like that
- 26:55the way that they found it was that it got brought up in a
- 26:58newspaper. Oh, that's fine.
- 27:00After it aired. Yeah, I think they had the film
- 27:03and they like new of it. But they didn't realize that it
- 27:07was a salmon, friends thing until Craig was researching the
- 27:09book and found that newspaper listing, huh?
- 27:12There was also a panel for the book.
- 27:15Yeah, very, very small panel, it was deputy director, I think is
- 27:19her title right now, Barbara Miller, who you might recognize
- 27:22from the prop culture, episode on The Muppet Movie.
- 27:26She was in, that was so great. Was she just talked after they
- 27:32did a compilation of like all the surviving salmon friends
- 27:35clips? In between they had like some
- 27:38Wilkins coffee ads and it was all in high definition, it
- 27:41looked wonderful. And after all that Barbara
- 27:44Miller talked with Craig, about the book, they presented Emily.
- 27:48Is it Emily angle? Yes, that's the okay.
- 27:52I pronounce it right. She made a custom Sam doll that
- 27:55they prominently put on stage and it looked adorable.
- 27:58Yeah. And basically, the first time
- 28:00that's that, that character has ever looked adorable because
- 28:03that that puppet is not. Not cute in the traditional
- 28:07Muppet way. Oh he's not.
- 28:09But would is not cute and I will put that on the record
- 28:13Pinocchio. You are not cute, you, okay
- 28:16good. But in comparison to latex
- 28:20characters in say ghosts of Hafner Hall, I think maybe they
- 28:25might as well be 100. Wow, hot would takes coming from
- 28:30Shane tonight, who would? When who would win a beauty
- 28:34contest between Sam? Sam.
- 28:36And Farkas Fastener Sam Sam. Okay?
- 28:40Then It's no contest. There was also a panel for the
- 28:45book at Comic-Con featuring Craig Chemin along with Henson
- 28:49archivist. Susie tofty, Puppeteer Ryan,
- 28:51Dillon puppet Builder, Raleigh crewson Muppet fan artist, Dave
- 28:54Halton, and some guy named Joe. Can you all tell me what
- 28:58happened at this panel? I think I read that Craig.
- 29:02Chemin, put Joe and a headlock. Hmm, I'd say that was the big
- 29:06highlight. Yeah.
- 29:08But he deserved it because of what he did to those puppets.
- 29:11It's true. That we are unable to talk about
- 29:16that panel at this time due to a scheduling conflict that
- 29:19scheduling conflict is that's in the future at the time of this
- 29:22recording. However, I should at least
- 29:28address that Comic-Con also has a Muppets Mayhem panel of Sesame
- 29:32Street. The musical panel, we're all
- 29:34very happy to see lots of good Muppet.
- 29:37Representation at Comic-Con, there are many things, so many
- 29:40years, when there's been nothing at all, uppity, at New York
- 29:44Comic Con. So the yeah, having more than
- 29:46one, is that? It's a miracle.
- 29:49It's great. It's that like, I feels like
- 29:51everybody's represented the, The Henson people, the Muppet
- 29:55people, the Sesame people. Yeah.
- 29:57All at the same event, the same same kind, it's wonderful.
- 30:01It's going to use my psychic powers to look into the future
- 30:05and see that the salmon friends event went really well.
- 30:09That was the, the panel of the entire convention.
- 30:12Everyone was talking about it, absolutely.
- 30:15One of the things we look for at these sorts of events is things,
- 30:18you can buy with Muppets on them, which are sometimes easier
- 30:22to find it cons than in other places sometimes, Maybe.
- 30:26I don't know, at least when there are Muppet fan artist
- 30:28there, two of you brought questions, related to Muppet
- 30:32merch for your discussion questions.
- 30:34And I'd like to shift to that topic.
- 30:36Right now, I'm going to have Shane go first and then before
- 30:43we get too far and answering Shane's question.
- 30:46That's question, is actually relevant to contextualizing
- 30:49chains, question in a way. So one right after another,
- 30:52starting with chain what discussion question have you
- 30:54brought for us? Well, you used so many big
- 30:57words, right? Then I I know and comprehended
- 31:01you I know I'm rambling. I'm sorry, I'll read it.
- 31:04Come the script. Exactly what is a shame?
- 31:09Okay, so well my question is what is a piece of Muppet
- 31:13merchandise that does not exist that you think should exist?
- 31:18And I don't, I'm excluding things like, oh, Musicians of
- 31:22Bremen should be on Blu-ray. Nothing, nothing like home
- 31:24video. What?
- 31:26What is a next? Another kind of piece of
- 31:28merchandise that doesn't exist that you think should exist.
- 31:31Well, I have an answer which is kind of cheating because we just
- 31:33talked about this and moving right along, but the first thing
- 31:36that comes to mind is inspired by Muppet Christmas Carol, there
- 31:40should be an officially licensed Statler.
- 31:44As Jacob Marley door knocker, that actually works as a door
- 31:49knocker. Apparently, somebody on Etsy is
- 31:52has made some that look really good.
- 31:53Like they look exactly like Statler as as Jacob Marley as a
- 31:57door knocker but they do not actually work as door knockers.
- 32:00So they should make a real one that you can put on your front
- 32:04door and hopefully nobody will seal it.
- 32:07Well or at least. Have you seen those, you know,
- 32:12the door knockers and Labyrinth? Yeah.
- 32:15Yeah they became earrings with the little o rings.
- 32:20Oh that's so at the very least you could do that with Jacob
- 32:23Marley. Yeah, well we'll have whale it.
- 32:26You or is it just a functional door down?
- 32:32Yeah. It how much more could it
- 32:33possibly cost to make a Jacob Marley door knocker, that goes
- 32:37loose. Oh yeah, they should do that.
- 32:40Good. Well he says screwed.
- 32:43So maybe you would have to record your own so that it says
- 32:45your voice in a creepy tone when someone brings for you could
- 32:48wear it to your ring, doorbell camera.
- 32:51So you can see who's approaching To ring your doorbell or knock
- 32:56on your door and then you can see their name perfectly or
- 33:00Peter Lynn's, has to record every single game on the planet
- 33:04Earth. Yeah, so that it can say do it.
- 33:10There was like there was a talking Elmo doll that said
- 33:12everybody's name, right? So there's a precedent.
- 33:15I think they need to merchandize what we don't see which is on
- 33:19the opposite side of the door. Is the Waldorf knocker.
- 33:23Yeah, poor Although if he didn't get to be a door knocker, and
- 33:26this is the kind of thing that merge can fix.
- 33:29Yeah, I was thinking that he could be the door handle because
- 33:33his face is a little rounder. Yes.
- 33:36And then you could just grab it when you're feeling angry.
- 33:38Have a mean? Haven't we all wanted to grab
- 33:41waldorf's face your time to time?
- 33:43I mean he does have a salad salad tongs Waldorf salad,
- 33:48tongs. Yeah, Statler, and Waldorf salad
- 33:51tongs where one side is Statler and one side as well.
- 33:54Perfect. Disney.
- 33:55Are you listening? All right, they're not
- 33:57listening. Since you mentioned the
- 34:00Labyrinth door knockers has everyone seen the T-shirt?
- 34:03Oh, I've seen there's a million t-shirts, be more specific.
- 34:06Everybody in my t-shirts, the t-shirts that are officially
- 34:11licensed merchandise that are the door knockers from
- 34:15Labyrinth. Placed on the t-shirts.
- 34:18It's a knockers t-shirt. It's I right?
- 34:22It's this is the thing that officially Licensed.
- 34:24It's a thing that really exists. I'm pretty darn sure.
- 34:27It's officially like so weird that they would use a labyrinth
- 34:30characters for a Young Frankenstein t-shirt.
- 34:32Right? Does it say anything or it's
- 34:36just images of the it's just images.
- 34:39You figure out the pun on your own.
- 34:41Yeah I know that with your intelligence.
- 34:43It's very surrender grow like what Yahoo and eventually.
- 34:52If you're smart enough eventually after Staring at the
- 34:54shirt long enough, you realize that it is, in fact, a joke.
- 34:57Well, and then you realize that you've been staring at a little
- 35:00too long stop staring at it. So.
- 35:04So speaking of shirts, my thing that should exist that there's
- 35:09not is Ernie and Bert sweaters. Yeah.
- 35:12Why are there? No officially licensed Bert and
- 35:15Ernie sweaters. Oh yeah seems so obvious like
- 35:20you can get sort of approximations on my Halloween
- 35:23costume. This but there's Is no, like
- 35:25like a sweater swap practical sweater, that looks like one
- 35:28that Ernie and Bert would wear. I mean, that is every gay,
- 35:33couples, Halloween costume goals right there, it would be make it
- 35:36so easy for them. Are you listening Sesame
- 35:39Workshop? Yeah, that feels like it could
- 35:42be within our grasp some day. It's the kind of thing like 20
- 35:46years ago, we would just sit around and go man.
- 35:48They should really make something like that, but it
- 35:50would never get made, you would have to, you would have to make
- 35:53your own at home. If And something like that.
- 35:55But I do think that companies I know I hate using words like IP
- 36:02and brand, but I think companies who own characters like this
- 36:06have more of an awareness now of how much people love the
- 36:11characters out and how much they love these little details and
- 36:14how much money they might be willing to pay to own things
- 36:19like Bert and Ernie's Waters. Yeah, Beth the discussion
- 36:25question. You brought is relevant to these
- 36:27things. Yeah.
- 36:29So I had I started with the similar question about, you know
- 36:32what do we want out of Muppet merchandise?
- 36:35And then of course, because I'm the fragonard.
- 36:38I was specifically thinking about the figurines that we've
- 36:46seen some images from boss, fight Studios coming out about.
- 36:51They're going to Of Gobo and red and I think flange doozer, one
- 37:00of these days may I jump in, please do.
- 37:05It's what I was reading said something about Red Gobo Uncle
- 37:12traveling, Matt and a doozer to pack my.
- 37:15But the merch that they've already released from this, so
- 37:19far, is just a flange, doozer, action figure.
- 37:24It doesn't just say character, it doesn't offend doozer, and if
- 37:27you look at it you go. Oh they used flanges the model.
- 37:30No it's specifically branded to this specific doozer which I I
- 37:37don't even know how to process that I'm very happy and Just for
- 37:41cotter pin. Yeah.
- 37:42I like think there are very there will probably be a lot of
- 37:45people though who who vaguely remember having fun memories of
- 37:51Fraggle Rock and they'll be like oh yeah flange doozer.
- 37:54That guy. Like they they want to just
- 37:57seemed like they remember Fraggle Rock him better than
- 38:00they actually do. I just feel like the way men
- 38:03would not know who flanged user is but they know Doozers like to
- 38:07work. Yeah.
- 38:08And flange is like hard. And we're sounding name so they
- 38:13would think oh how cute. His name is planche doozer.
- 38:18Something like that. Kind of, Yeah, the more specific
- 38:22question that I wanted to dive into with, I mean, Muppet
- 38:26merchandise in general, but specifically, Fraggle Rock.
- 38:30Is that a lot of the merchandising that gets made
- 38:34for, you know, fandoms is plastic figurines and t-shirts.
- 38:40Like those are two of the really big ones and plastic is not A
- 38:47sustainable product. And, you know, we hear a lot
- 38:50about fast fashion and I'm wondering if these kind of
- 38:53merchandise that we really want to spans is that antithetical to
- 39:00Not just fraggle rocks messages of environmentalism but you know
- 39:06all of the Henson stuff had that theme running through it.
- 39:11So, if they answer this question with that seeming, like a
- 39:14hypocrite racist, I don't know how to either.
- 39:21So maybe the answer is, they move away from physical products
- 39:25to digital products, like n ftes, which are great for the
- 39:28environment, right? No, I'm just crossing my fingers
- 39:37and hoping that the fact that we haven't heard anything else, Out
- 39:40the Labyrinth and Dark Crystal and ft since they were
- 39:44originally, announced means that they're not gonna happen.
- 39:48That's what I'm hoping. It's not better way home.
- 39:50Yeah, It's the I didn't think that most of the things, well,
- 39:55stuffed animals. Those are those environmentally
- 39:58friendly plus really not. It's almost always like nylon
- 40:03that's made out of plastic. Yeah.
- 40:06Wow. So we should just like all of
- 40:08our Muppet stuff should be made out of paper biodegradable.
- 40:14The mean it's not generally products, right?
- 40:20Exactly. So when you think about the, you
- 40:25know, the largest companies that are responsible for, you know,
- 40:29it's something like ten companies that are responsible
- 40:31for some huge percentage of CO2 emissions.
- 40:36I don't think. Merchandise manufacturers are
- 40:41one of those companies like I don't think it's One of the
- 40:44biggest contributors to the problem but that doesn't mean
- 40:48that it's necessarily a good thing.
- 40:53So I'm just wondering. Yeah.
- 40:54Is there potential for you know, more sustainable materials or
- 41:05You know, a fan made products, like I was searching on Etsy and
- 41:10you see a lot of merchandise from the 80s, but you don't see
- 41:16a lot of current like, fan-made art.
- 41:21I'll say this, my new favorite piece of Muppet merchandise is a
- 41:26magnet that I want on hubba-wha. That was made from paper and a
- 41:32magnet. And I think that's Half bad and
- 41:36I don't think Becca petunia is one of the biggest contributors
- 41:40to to climate change but I could be wrong.
- 41:44I don't know. She's got a lot of surprises up
- 41:47her sleeve mmm but yeah, no, those are fantastic because ours
- 41:51are unique. They're one-of-a-kind.
- 41:53Yeah, yeah they're like nft is about better.
- 41:57So there you go all you fans out there who want no more to you
- 42:00just got to come on Hubble one win.
- 42:02And when yeah we all have one, right?
- 42:04Yeah, all right. We really is this is this a
- 42:08winners only group. I think that that might be what
- 42:12a happy accident. All right, we're smart, no
- 42:15losers. Here I do.
- 42:18Like Shane's idea though of imaginary, mother merchandise,
- 42:21like that's Deck. There's all kinds of
- 42:22possibilities with that. Like, this is my imaginary
- 42:26action figure of Crasher, from inner tube.
- 42:30This is my imaginary full-body sweet.
- 42:35Outfit. Wow looks great thanks.
- 42:38I do think that a Marjorie the trash Heap merchandise that
- 42:44would be biodegradable, right? Who have to be if ya like an
- 42:47actual like compostable replica of Marjorie the trash heap, if
- 42:52we all get a Marjorie replica that's made of stuff from real
- 42:58trash heaps, like we're getting things out of landfills and Main
- 43:01into our own Marjorie, the trash heaps.
- 43:04And then that does that help me. I don't know if that helps
- 43:10sounds better. It sounds more to get things out
- 43:13of landfills. It sounds more feasible than
- 43:15shooting it all into space. True.
- 43:18Yes. And then adorable, it's, it can
- 43:22all be recycled into the stuff on your back if you need a junk
- 43:27lady costume. Perfect true.
- 43:30So and if you are at a loss for information, you can just Go to
- 43:35your own personal trash Heap, like a Magic 8 Ball and she'll
- 43:39give you the answers. There's also the possibility of
- 43:44turning that into your own miniature Grouchland.
- 43:49Wow, the possibilities for garbage are endless.
- 43:52Yeah, there's a lot of trash and muppet Productions.
- 43:54A lot of truth, but I was done talking about Elmo and
- 43:57Grouchland. But now that you mention it, I
- 43:59am absolutely convinced that the piles of trash that we see.
- 44:04In Elmo and Grouchland and in Labyrinth where the junk ladies
- 44:09lift, and in the episode of back to the rock, where we see boober
- 44:16go into the trash, those are all connected, right?
- 44:20This sounds like a tough pigs article in the anything it's
- 44:24been absolutely on my list of Articles through.
- 44:26Okay, great. And it can't be my Fraggle, Rock
- 44:29is already that everything is connected.
- 44:31So Bingo there's a you can bet everyone's trash Everyone is
- 44:35trash. Guess it's the it's the KD Lang
- 44:38garbage Universe. Oh yeah more trash.
- 44:41Wow gosh. Wow.
- 44:43Well done. Okay, don't get that one.
- 44:46Keep watching the Jim Henson our you will The Muppets have had a
- 44:49lot of say I was trying to come up with a joke like something
- 44:53about the Muppets making a lot of trash over the years.
- 45:00I think I do the new trash line can be introduced by Statler and
- 45:04Waldorf. Yeah.
- 45:06Oh wait, I just figured out. Yeah, the Muppets have made a
- 45:08lot of trash over the years like those appearances on holy moly,
- 45:11that he brought it back little late on that one.
- 45:16Wow, wow. We're going to take a short
- 45:18commercial break right now. Then we'll talk some more about
- 45:21Sesame Street and the Disney Muppets and more stick around.
- 45:26Hey parents, grab your kids, and come see the furriest Musical on
- 45:30Broadway. It awaits, aren't the various
- 45:33Musical on not quite Broadway, it's not quite Sesame Street.

- 45:44you some. Facsimile of all your favorite

- 45:54Not quite bird my Staples collection a freaky hybrid of

- 46:03faked on the golden globe-winning actor, James Mason
- 46:06Rosita but you know, if you like watching, talented, people
- 46:09working under tricky circumstances to bring you new
- 46:11and interesting ways to appreciate the Muppets.
- 46:13You don't have to go all the way to not quite Broadway.
- 46:16This is the tough Pig store. Auntie public for some not quite
- 46:19Muppet, merchandise, Muppet fans.
- 46:21Love are not quite The Monster. At the End of This Book.
- 46:23T-shirt that says, be the monster.
- 46:25You wish to see at the End of This Book.
- 46:27Yes, this is a real shirt that you can buy.
- 46:29It's not exactly the same as the real thing so we probably won't
- 46:33get sued. I must now clarify that nothing
- 46:36that's been said in this commercial or advertise on our
- 46:37stories in any way license, by endorsed by approved, by or
- 46:40affiliated with Sesame Workshop. You can probably already tell
- 46:43without me saying so, but I fear lawyers, so go buy our stuff
- 46:46today. And remember kids visiting our
- 46:47stores. The only way to keep the Grobe
- 46:50monster away and me. I'm cute too.
- 46:54No, you're not. Yeah, I don't think you are.
- 47:04Hey, Ryan. What question have you brought
- 47:06for us today? Well, I'm glad you asked.
- 47:10I've written about this on tough pigs.
- 47:13That on the website before probably more than once.
- 47:16I don't know if I've heard everyone's take from this group
- 47:22but pretty much Much. Every time, a new Muppet project
- 47:26as announced a special, or a TV series, or a movie or whatever.
- 47:31There are people online saying, why don't you just do the Muppet
- 47:35Show again? Come on, just do the Muppet Show
- 47:38but again, and for a long time, I was on record as just being
- 47:46like, no, it will not work. The the variety show in a
- 47:50Vaudeville theater, nobody would watch.
- 47:53At in the 2020s nobody wants to watch that.
- 47:57The networks have tried many times periodically to bring back
- 48:02the variety show. Like, does anybody remember the
- 48:05Maya and Marty show with Maya, Rudolph?
- 48:08Martin Short, I didn't see like, much of it, but I do remember
- 48:13that day. Yeah, two of them.
- 48:15Most beloved and talented comedy entertainers.
- 48:20They can, they can both sing and they're funny and And they had a
- 48:25variety series on NBC, I think and it was it lasted for a few
- 48:30episodes. And then it was very quickly,
- 48:32canceled and did not come back for another season because
- 48:34nobody watches variety shows. Was it any good?
- 48:37Can you still watch it anywhere? It was fine.
- 48:42Oh I don't know. I've never looked for it since
- 48:44it was on TV. But yeah so but people just
- 48:50always say like what they should do the Muppet Show.
- 48:52Again they should do the Muppet. Against.
- 48:54So I've softened somewhat in recent years like all right, I
- 48:59don't know, maybe they should just try it.
- 49:01If only to prove me right. Like, right when it gets cancel
- 49:04quickly, I can tell everyone, I told you so.
- 49:07But so yes. My question is just what do you
- 49:12all think of bringing back the Muppet Show?
- 49:14Like just the original format, the original setting, and do you
- 49:18think it would work? Okay, so my take is that That
- 49:24maybe not as a series because people are going to make unfair
- 49:28comparisons for the original. Yeah.
- 49:30But now here is a hot date. Perhaps you know what was the
- 49:34best part of? It's a very merry snow time,
- 49:37winter, Jamboree Muppet movie. Well, done to say it was the
- 49:43Christmas variety show. Yes.
- 49:45The part where they are doing their Christmas show, as I love
- 49:49the idea of the buckets, like being like the Radio City Music
- 49:53Hall, Of wherever they are and putting on like an annual
- 49:56Christmas Spectacular. And that makes me think you
- 50:00could easily do the Muppet Show, as a holiday, special format.
- 50:06As, especially could see it working, because that would be
- 50:09like a one-time thing that people, they could advertise it
- 50:13a lot. And people would be like, oh,
- 50:14here's this one. Cool thing that I want to watch
- 50:16on Disney plus that's yeah that that might work.
- 50:20Yeah, and like if the Muppets go to the movies was ostensibly a
- 50:23Muppet Show. Actual, what about movies and
- 50:26they can that work very well. They could easily translate that
- 50:29similar idea to a different concept but keep the Muppet Show
- 50:35base to it. You know, that similar Trend
- 50:39where you see, you know, take an existing movie, keep one actor,
- 50:44replace the rest with Muppets and you know us Die Hard fans.
- 50:49Start picking apart all the reasons why that's not going to
- 50:52work. Realistically speaking love.
- 50:53Those those tweets like every single time that gets tweeted
- 50:57there. It's just.
- 50:58Yep. And we get trapped in it
- 50:59inevitably. Yeah, I would love to see a
- 51:03special where The Muppets go meta and try to incorporate all
- 51:10of this. Here's what the Muppets should
- 51:11do from casual fans and we see it fall apart in hilarious ways
- 51:16because it doesn't work. Yeah.
- 51:19That would be funny. Oh my gosh.
- 51:21That is, that's the best idea I've heard for a muppet
- 51:25production yet. Like the Muppets do empty on
- 51:29hire me to write it. The Muppets do whatever Muppet
- 51:32fans, say, and it all goes wrong.
- 51:36Like scooter is sitting there watching what people are saying
- 51:39about the Muppets on Twitter and just, yep.
- 51:42And constantly telling Kermit like, okay, this is what we have
- 51:44to do. We have to do this and stuff.
- 51:45Oh my God, it'll be just like that one episode of the Jim
- 51:48Henson. Our yeah, pretty much.
- 51:50Whoa waiting. Oh, so there's a pattern
- 51:54emerging in this conversation in which things keep unexpectedly
- 52:01being Jim Henson our episodes. Hmm.
- 52:04I'm getting very scared. Are we in the chair to another
- 52:08episode of we just don't know. Did you make a Jim Henson our
- 52:14podcast without meaning to? We've all know.
- 52:19Oh, that's my worst nightmare. Wait, I forget there, are people
- 52:22on this call, who? Really, like the Jim Henson.
- 52:25Our, I forget that I can't just assume that everyone comes on it
- 52:28as much as I do. There are cursing, there are
- 52:30person on this call who really like Jim Henson out people.
- 52:34There are people. There are people on this island
- 52:38who really like the Jim Henson. Okay, well, I like it, too.
- 52:42I don't love it, but I like, wow.
- 52:44Okay, fine fine. You know what?
- 52:50Sort of like a Muppet Show when the Muppets perform at d23.
- 52:55I was thinking the same exact statement really.
- 52:59Wow. No.
- 53:00Okay, speaking of Muppets doing a Christmas show, though, we got
- 53:04to see Muppets. Performing a Christmas song and
- 53:08doing fun, Christmas things at a Muppet Christmas, Carol panel,
- 53:12at d23, I wasn't expecting that. I assume this was mostly just a
- 53:17way for them to make a big deal out of the cut of Muppet
- 53:23Christmas Carol that they're putting on Disney plus soon,
- 53:25which has when love is gone restored.
- 53:28I don't know if there's anything else in this cut that's going to
- 53:32be restored. Like if there's anything else
- 53:33new to it or if it's just That when love is gone is fired,
- 53:38okay. All right, I mean, I won once
- 53:41that has been done. I want people to start
- 53:43campaigning for the full Marley and Marley song to go back in
- 53:47the movie. Oh yeah.
- 53:49They should do that too. Because that footage has does
- 53:53exist and it has been used in TV broadcasts, and you can find a,
- 53:57not even talks about that. Yeah, but maybe it's real, maybe
- 54:01they could do a promo video. Where they shoot Bunsen and
- 54:07Beaker singing their song that was only on the soundtrack.
- 54:11That would have been fun. They could do it.
- 54:12They could, they could just rebuild like a version of
- 54:15Scrooge's office set or just like, do it on a green screen or
- 54:19something. He was that a our wall.
- 54:23Yeah. It's haunted mansion.
- 54:25Yeah, I guess that's what everything is going to be from
- 54:27now on, right? No more sets.
- 54:30So I've never seen these missing minutes but do they include the
- 54:34Waldorf? Door knocker.
- 54:38They do not unfortunately and do they include the knockers
- 54:42t-shirt, oddly enough? They do.
- 54:44Oh, all right thoughts of the d23 stuff.
- 54:48Oh yeah. Nina West was great.
- 54:50Yeah. Yeah people were obviously
- 54:53thrilled to see live Muppets in the room with them as we were
- 54:57discussing earlier that's always.
- 55:00That's always very exciting. And yeah I think it was a good
- 55:05way to bring attention. Sent to the 30th anniversary and
- 55:08the new, the new version and all that.
- 55:12Yeah. I mean if you're just going to
- 55:13if you're going to promote hey we're adding this new cut tooth
- 55:16of the movie to the streaming service.
- 55:19I mean they went all out like they had special guests that
- 55:24behind the scenes pictures and stuff they had new musical
- 55:27performances. Yeah.
- 55:29And they were all in their their, their costumes.
- 55:32They work. We had singing Foods, he.
- 55:36Yeah, he saw that coming the audience.
- 55:38Loved the singing foods from all the videos I've seen, and thank
- 55:41you Shan, for collecting as much stuff about this, as you did,
- 55:44all the videos and things. I tried my best.
- 55:47I really liked that they didn't just stick to the main puppets
- 55:52that people to the main characters, that people knew.
- 55:55But we're interested in bringing in food and Penguins and such.
- 56:00And I'm really glad that the audience responded.
- 56:02That so well because in that kind of live setting you can see
- 56:06what's coming. Like you don't have the
- 56:09advantage of what's outside, the frame being totally invisible on
- 56:13the main unless they're seated far enough back but people can
- 56:16see what's coming and yet when all these other puppets pop into
- 56:20frame, everyone gets really excited.
- 56:23And yeah, this further proves my point that the Muppets are not
- 56:28just about the main characters or even about characters, we
- 56:32know, But are about puppets doing Muppet, e things.
- 56:36And when puppets Doom uppity things and they're cute, people
- 56:39will react positively. Oh yeah.
- 56:41And it's the thing that I lose sight of some times where, like,
- 56:45people who aren't us, who aren't thinking about the Muppets every
- 56:48day, they might not even remember that.
- 56:51There's Muppet singing, food, and muppet Penguins.
- 56:54So when they are suddenly reminded of that, it's so like,
- 56:58oh yeah, wow, love it Penguins, that's hilarious.
- 57:01I mean I don't, A note that it is that hilarious.
- 57:04And yet I'm glad other people think so it, I mean to to the
- 57:08average person, I think it is very funny to see a muppet
- 57:11penguin where the Penguins were enclosed on this.
- 57:13I don't remember, I think they were just wearing scarves little
- 57:16scarf. Okay.
- 57:17Yeah. Muppet penguin, wearing a scarf
- 57:19singing and dancing. I mean that's to the average
- 57:22person that's comedy gold. If you don't live where penguins
- 57:25are penguins, are just objectively funny, right?
- 57:28And then, if you turn that into a muppet, Extra delay Muppet
- 57:32fans at the South Pole were not as amused by that everyone else.
- 57:36Jared Faircloth was very bored in Australia and southern Chile
- 57:42and Argentina. I think I think the format that
- 57:47they used for celebrating, you know, this big anniversary of a
- 57:54Muppet Christmas. Carol could easily be replicated
- 57:57when other big anniversaries come by of, Beloved Muppet stuff
- 58:03but I'll pick Treasure Island. Yes.
- 58:05Just a few years away that 30th anniversary from space.
- 58:10Everyone will be that excited about that anniversary but they
- 58:13can get Rob Schneider back. No they can't but I think it was
- 58:22a good balance of celebrating the old stuff and introducing
- 58:26the new stuff because that panel on Muppet Mayhem was good.
- 58:31Like, it made me feel optimistic about the show.
- 58:34Yeah, I'm so cautiously optimistic about Muppets Mayhem.
- 58:38I have faith in the system now that now that they are sort of
- 58:45having performers or involved not.
- 58:48Not necessarily like they are the ones writing, but they are
- 58:51getting more input creatively from the performers that they
- 58:58have like, they have more knowledge of these characters.
- 59:00So they'll be able All to say more, oh, this is something
- 59:04Floyd when we do. So they won't build a void sort
- 59:07of making a bad show about what. Yeah.
- 59:11Right. And you can really tell when
- 59:13something is written by people who have experience in
- 59:20screenwriting but not experience in writing for the Muppets.
- 59:24It's a different Monster for lack of a better term.
- 59:29Yeah, yeah. No.
- 59:30It's a very specific thing at this time.
- 59:34I'd like to remind everyone early-mid episode that you
- 59:39should rate review, subscribe, all that stuff, do all of the
- 59:43good podcast things and there will come a time, not maybe not
- 59:47right now, but at some point in your life listener, when you are
- 59:51standing in a line with nothing to do It might only be for a
- 59:55minute but you'll be standing in a line with nothing to do and
- 59:58you'll be thinking there was something I was supposed to do
- 1:00:01when I'm standing in a line with nothing to do something.
- 1:00:04I was supposed to remember that they said on a podcast and what
- 1:00:07it is is take that opportunity when you're not doing anything
- 1:00:09else to open up your podcasts app.
- 1:00:11And just make sure that you say something nice or throw a few
- 1:00:16stars at Muppet fan podcasts from tough pigs.com.
- 1:00:20That's all, that's all you need to do and now you're going to
- 1:00:23remember it. They go buy something from
- 1:00:25Brooklyn and I'm pretty sure I heard that on a podcast to know.
- 1:00:29No one's. No one's ever said anything
- 1:00:31about that on a podcast. I thought I heard something
- 1:00:33about buying an Easter egg for Christmas.
- 1:00:36Okay. We're referencing too many Elmo
- 1:00:39things. I haven't seen since I was a kid
- 1:00:41that I can't remember. Speaking of Elmo things that I
- 1:00:44like a, you problem? Yeah.
- 1:00:46That's not our fault. Yes.
- 1:00:48Speaking of Elmo things that I won't remember.
- 1:00:51Let's talk a little bit about Sesame Street.
- 1:00:53The musical I'm confused about what happened here.
- 1:00:58So there, I don't know how many listeners have heard the Test
- 1:01:01episode for this show, but I talked a lot with my friends,
- 1:01:06Jared and Becca and have a fan are distorted by, they might
- 1:01:10hear the pilot episode of this show.
- 1:01:12It's on the patreon. It's on the tough pigs patreon.
- 1:01:16So, if you become one of the tough pigs patrons, then you
- 1:01:19sometimes get exclusive content, like that episode.
- 1:01:21Which now is dated? Because we know more Now than we
- 1:01:24knew then but it was a lot of fun.
- 1:01:26And one of the things we speculated about is, how are
- 1:01:28they going to approach the Sesame Street musical?
- 1:01:31How's that even going to work? Is it going to be the real
- 1:01:33performers? Is it going to be puppets?
- 1:01:35Is it going to be costumes? And what we got?
- 1:01:39It seems was yes, puppets, that look, kind of like the official
- 1:01:44puppets, pretty close. But if you're picky about Muppet
- 1:01:47design, and if you're looking at close up pictures of them, they
- 1:01:52look a little bit different and And it is not the regular
- 1:01:55puppeteers. It is talented puppeteers, who
- 1:01:57are doing a good job, but they are lip-syncing to official
- 1:02:00audio as I understand it. Only one of the three of us was
- 1:02:03there. We're relying on you a lot for
- 1:02:05this stuff tonight. Shane, but Shane, what can you
- 1:02:08tell us about Sesame Street? The Musical on Broadway
- 1:02:24When are we gonna get the Jim Henson?
- 1:02:26Our, the musical. Oh, it's that spin-off that they
- 1:02:29did from, don't eat the pictures.
- 1:02:31Life has its own musical number. I would never agree that.
- 1:02:35So Stephanie 15 musical, it's about perception of your
- 1:02:38puppets. But now the musical they have
- 1:02:41songs some new like fruit. Now, there's three new songs and
- 1:02:44then a whole bunch of Standards. What else do you want to know?
- 1:02:47So, in the the puppeteers are hidden from view the whole time.
- 1:02:50Is that right? Yes.
- 1:02:51So the set is, there's a Big wall across the entire stage.
- 1:02:56And that's where the puppeteers are hidden behind.
- 1:02:59If you are going to go, see the show, the front row seats, are
- 1:03:02the cheapest ones. And that was where I sat in
- 1:03:04that, is a apparently obstructed view.
- 1:03:07No, no, because anything happening and going on in the
- 1:03:10middle of the stage, genuinely cannot see.
- 1:03:13So I heard Ernie singing rubber ducky in a bathtub but I
- 1:03:17couldn't see it. And you can always hear, Ernie
- 1:03:19singing, rubber ducky in a bathtub, you can bring up that
- 1:03:22audio whenever you want. Yes.
- 1:03:24But in the theater when Ernie does it they pour bubbles down
- 1:03:27from the ceiling. Does that happen?
- 1:03:29When you listen to rubber ducky every time because I blow the
- 1:03:33bubbles, I get out of the bubble soap and I blow the bubbles.
- 1:03:37Yeah. All you need.
- 1:03:38I applaud your gumption to make to the bit.
- 1:03:42Yeah, you're making it a 4D experience.
- 1:03:44This, this is how I make up for not getting to go to in-person
- 1:03:47Muppet events. This is what you do.
- 1:03:51So are the puppeteers lip-synching to just the songs?
- 1:03:55Are they literally the whole time they are lip-synching.
- 1:03:59The entire time there is one character, the stage manager
- 1:04:04sheep who was a new character for the show.
- 1:04:06He's just a standard Sesame, she loved it with a little headset
- 1:04:10on. They are speaking wife the whole
- 1:04:12time because they are the one that are primarily interacting
- 1:04:17with the one human. Person in the show.
- 1:04:21Okay. Oh yeah, there's a human person
- 1:04:23in the show. That was my other question.
- 1:04:25What it said that, you know, pulling an audience member up to
- 1:04:29be part of the show, is that a plant who's actually an actor or
- 1:04:34is that a genuine audience member?
- 1:04:36It is an actor. It is not it's not a plant in
- 1:04:39that they are sitting out in the audience.
- 1:04:41They are on stage the entire time but they like Wonder in on
- 1:04:45the set as if they are a lost audience member and then they
- 1:04:48get roped into this Show. So they're not even trying to
- 1:04:51pretend that this is a real audience member.
- 1:04:54It depends on how you look at that.
- 1:04:57Yeah, and on that sounds like they're they're not committing
- 1:04:59to the bit as much as JD blowing bubbles when he sings Rubber
- 1:05:02Ducky it sounds like a six-year-old.
- 1:05:07Now will in the future have a realization that he wasn't a
- 1:05:11real audience member. Well, that's true.
- 1:05:13We I do have to keep reminding myself that like oh yeah this
- 1:05:17isn't for grownups who have been to the theater before.
- 1:05:20This is for two-year-olds, and this is going to be their first
- 1:05:23theater experience and they will probably think, oh, well, this
- 1:05:25guy just wandered in off the street and they pulled him into
- 1:05:28the show. And when they announced the
- 1:05:31show, they said they were going to have all these special guests
- 1:05:33from the world of Broadway and stuff.
- 1:05:36And I think that was supposed to be what happens in the show,
- 1:05:40what that person would be some different kind of like oh hello.
- 1:05:45Where they had. They would have a different
- 1:05:47famous Broadway person, playing that character, every
- 1:05:50performance. I don't know if it would have
- 1:05:52been to every performer or rotating and yeah rotating said
- 1:05:55because there are a number of jokes quote-unquote jokes where
- 1:06:01they'll the person will perform something.
- 1:06:03And that one of the characters of, oh, wow, I don't know about
- 1:06:06your future and Broadway, but I think you're going to be a big
- 1:06:09star lin-manuel. Whoever you are like that kind
- 1:06:13of thing. But the person in this show is
- 1:06:16always the same actor as it is. Yes.
- 1:06:19And he is not, he is he has some stage credits but he is not not
- 1:06:24a star. Yeah, you would say that that
- 1:06:26joke just doesn't yeah exist in this country.
- 1:06:29Really landed. Well, as it could.
- 1:06:31Wow. Is this not similar to the Gene
- 1:06:36Kelly episode of The Muppet Show in which a celebrity?
- 1:06:39Thanks he's just an audience member for a show and then gets
- 1:06:42roped into its Looks like that in the show.
- 1:06:46The person in the show is much more enthusiastic about being in
- 1:06:50the show. Then Gene Kelly was, but it is
- 1:06:54the end of the world. That is Trevor Journey.
- 1:06:57Filled whole musical number about the Earth opening up and
- 1:07:01swallowing them all up. Hope yes.
- 1:07:03And when the show finishes its run to that's it, that existence
- 1:07:07is over. We'll all be gone.
- 1:07:09Yep. I've heard that the Obscured 90s
- 1:07:16character and I'm probably going to even get the name wrong, baby
- 1:07:20tooth and the fuzzy funk, you got it right?
- 1:07:23Is in the show or group of characters.
- 1:07:26Hey, you know, the to like a larger ones.
- 1:07:29Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:07:31They are in it and if it is they just come out and dance.
- 1:07:35It was so weird. I was gobsmacked to the entire
- 1:07:38time but I enjoyed it so much. So after the count does the
- 1:07:43number of They dance, the introduces, the Sesame Street
- 1:07:47dances and they built new versions of those puppets.
- 1:07:51Yeah, that's great. Yeah, the colors are wildly
- 1:07:54different. They look like kind of more like
- 1:07:57like pocket lint. Wow maybe they're made out of
- 1:08:01pocket limit. They could be with a budget of
- 1:08:04the show was and they're just the two of them and they just do
- 1:08:08a dance. And it's boom, Raku style.
- 1:08:11So the performers are in black and they're just they just do a
- 1:08:14little dance and I loved it. So, does this mean that the most
- 1:08:19environmentally friendly version of Muppet merchandise is Muppets
- 1:08:25made out of pocket lint because I feel like we've all got access
- 1:08:29to lint. This, this is what boober has
- 1:08:33been trying to tell us this whole time to make things and
- 1:08:36dryer. Lot of lint.
- 1:08:38Because Fraggle Rock is the Environmental show, so it all it
- 1:08:42all makes sense. Fraggles have pockets though.
- 1:08:45I don't have pants. Oh, you can have pockets
- 1:08:47insurance and of cardigan sweaters.
- 1:08:50Yeah, but how often how often do so do those get one thing?
- 1:08:53You'd have to ask boober. Boober doesn't even wear a shirt
- 1:08:57into just has to have you don't? There's no there.
- 1:09:00Absolutely is depends on the hat.
- 1:09:03Hmm. On that gross thought Shane.

- 1:10:00find you on the internet. Well believe it or not,
- 1:10:03strangely enough also on tough Pigs.com and the various
- 1:10:08Associated things on the periphery of that.
- 1:10:12My podcast that I co-host with Anthony strand is moving right
- 1:10:16along a Muppet movie podcast, where we were watching all the
- 1:10:19Muppet movies, 2 minutes at a time and talking about them a
- 1:10:21lot. We are well, by the time this
- 1:10:26comes out will probably be about halfway through Muppet
- 1:10:28Christmas. Carol So that's fun to listen to
- 1:10:32and I'm on Twitter at me, Ryan row.
- 1:10:35And on letterboxed at movies are neat.
- 1:10:38And I love it when people like my letterbox reviews, because
- 1:10:43then it makes me feel like I'm not just shouting into the void.
- 1:10:46You're just saying that because I'm the one who like them.
- 1:10:49Yes, you do, you do occasionally like my letterbox reviews and I
- 1:10:52always appreciate it. I was recently a guest on moving
- 1:10:55right along. Thank you very much for having
- 1:10:57me and on, thank you for having me.
- 1:10:59Hello, Danny horn because I can't I can't compete with that.
- 1:11:05That's just not fair. It's not a competition though.
- 1:11:09I know young in it. Yeah, that's funny.
- 1:11:11Follow everybody. It's true.
- 1:11:13I just there should have been a buffer.
- 1:11:15I just like do Danny horn, then do Jared, then do me.
- 1:11:20And then I saw a person of normal intelligence.
- 1:11:23Explain that what's your logic there?
- 1:11:26No, I'm just saying like that would be a palate cleanser
- 1:11:28because Jarrod would come On and just be like, I don't see Miss
- 1:11:31the curly twirly in this episode so I don't like it and then my
- 1:11:35episode comes in and I'd have all these tanks and thoughts and
- 1:11:39Analysis and then I'd feel really good about myself.
- 1:11:42Now, I'm just listening to that Danny horn episode going on.
- 1:11:45Ah, why, why do I even bother anyway?
- 1:11:50If you in time your episode is posted, it will have been an
- 1:11:53entire week since the Danny episode so maybe you should have
- 1:11:58upped your game. Yeah.
- 1:11:59No, it's really on me, Shane. I know I'm, well, aware if any
- 1:12:06of you listeners would like to come at me.
- 1:12:09I'm at JD 11, PC on Twitter and on letterbox.
- 1:12:12And now a moment of spontaneous Applause for our panel of Muppet
- 1:12:15experts. Thank you.
- 1:12:18If you enjoyed this program, we hope you'll consider supporting
- 1:12:20us on patreon. Thank you to those of you who
- 1:12:21do. So now, this tough pigs Muppet
- 1:12:24fan podcast was executive produced by the tough pigs
- 1:12:26Muppet fan, podcast executive producer Johannes, thanks Duke.

- 1:12:42Pigs.com. This is JD Hansel.
- 1:12:43Reminding you as I always do. You'll never get out of the
- 1:12:46cube, goodbye. And I keep saying what they
- 1:12:56should really do is bring back granny fanny nesselrode little
- 1:13:00kids are already watching Sesame Street, but what about the
- 1:13:03senior citizen demographic? They can bring back granny,
- 1:13:06fanny nesselrode on the show on Sesame Street and then then they
- 1:13:10could add a giant, robot granny finding nesselrode to that.
- 1:13:13Mecca Builder show like just think about all the all the toys
- 1:13:17they could sell two old, ladies old men me I told you it's For
- 1:13:24the granny fanny Nestle science. okay, so the thing about Elmo's
- 1:13:31adventures in Grouchland is that it's a truly underrated piece of
- 1:13:36anti-capitalism and I did not expect that going in, but the
- 1:13:42piece de resistance at the end is when Elmo realizes that he
- 1:13:45has something in common with the villain.
- 1:13:49Not like, oh we have something in common that we can Bond over
- 1:13:52but rather, oh my gosh, I have a villainous trait Within Myself,
- 1:13:57That Could could turn villainous.
- 1:13:58If I don't face this problem, honestly, he doesn't get enough
- 1:14:04credit for that. Say, have you ever noticed how
- 1:14:08we Drive on a parkway, but park in a parking lot.
- 1:14:13I mean, what is the deal with that?
- 1:14:16I've never understood it. Am I right?
- 1:14:19Am I left? I will be here all.
- 1:14:23We could somebody please help me.
- 1:14:25I want to go home so bad. And scene.
