- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Tuesday, it is the 12th of
- 0:16March, and we are past the halfway mark through Lent, and
- 0:22we are moving ever closer toward that fateful day on that hill
- 0:28and Calvary. I wonder how you're going.
- 0:31I hope that you're taking some time or being able to carve out
- 0:34some time in your busy schedule to just reflect on the enormity
- 0:39of this journey as we walk toward that hill with Jesus as
- 0:43we prepare ourselves for the enormity of what's about to
- 0:46happen. Some of you probably still
- 0:49giving up some things and good on you if that's you.
- 0:52And even if you haven't given up anything for Lent, it is still
- 0:55such an important time to to centre ourselves in this story.
- 1:00And what better way to do that than by reading through this
- 1:03gospel together each day? And today we have another day
- 1:06where we just we just cover so much ground each day, the way
- 1:10Mark does in his gospel. We have got parables and then we
- 1:14have got Jesus showing his power over the natural elements.
- 1:19It is an enormous reading, not by volume but by impact.
- 1:23Today, as we read this, let's just go back.
- 1:27Holy Spirit just evoke in us a sense of awe being in the
- 1:32presence of Jesus as we hear His words, as we walk with Him, as
- 1:37we witness what He does. May His presence make your
- 1:42presence in our life be so palpable that it would blow our
- 1:49little minds. How exciting.
- 1:53How friends, do you want to do it?
- 1:55Do you? Yeah, me too.
- 1:57Let us read together Mark Chapter 4.
- 2:10Once again, Jesus began teaching by the Lakeshore.
- 2:14A very large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a
- 2:18boat. Then he sat in the boat while
- 2:21all the people remained on the shore.
- 2:23He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables,
- 2:28such as this one. Listen, A farmer went out to
- 2:32plant some seed as he scattered it across his field.
- 2:36Some of the seed fell in a footpath and the birds came and
- 2:39ate it. Other seed fell on shallow soil
- 2:43with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly
- 2:46because the soil was shallow. But the plant soon wilted under
- 2:50the hot sun, and since it didn't have deep roots, it died.
- 2:55Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the
- 2:59tender plants, so they produced no grain.
- 3:02Still other seeds fell on fertile soil and they sprouted,
- 3:07grew and produced a crop that was 3060 and even 100 times as
- 3:12many as had been planted then, he said.
- 3:17Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.
- 3:23Later, when Jesus was alone with the 12 disciples and with the
- 3:27others who were gathered around, they asked him what the parables
- 3:30meant. He replied, You are permitted to
- 3:34understand the secret of the Kingdom of God, but I use
- 3:37parables for everything I say to outsiders, so that the
- 3:42Scriptures might be fulfilled. When they see what I do, they
- 3:46will learn nothing. When they hear what I say, they
- 3:49will not understand. Otherwise they will turn to me
- 3:53and be forgiven. Then Jesus said to them, if you
- 3:58can't understand the meaning of this parable, how will you
- 4:01understand all the other parables?
- 4:04The farmer plants seed by taking God's word to others.
- 4:08The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who
- 4:11hear the message, only to have Satan come at once and take it
- 4:15away. The seed on the rocky soil
- 4:18represents those who hear the message and immediately receive
- 4:21it with joy. But since they don't have deep
- 4:24roots, they don't last long. They fall away as soon as they
- 4:28have problems or are persecuted for believing God's word.
- 4:32The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who
- 4:36hear God's word. But all too quickly the message
- 4:39is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth,
- 4:43and the desire for other things. So no fruit is produced, and the
- 4:49seed that fell on good soil represents those here and accept
- 4:53God's word and produce a harvest of 3060 or even 100 times as
- 4:59much as had been planted. Then Jesus asked them, would
- 5:04anyone lighten lamp and then put it under a basket or under a
- 5:08bed? Of course not.
- 5:11A lamp is placed on a stand where its light will shine, for
- 5:15everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the
- 5:18open and every secret will be brought to light.
- 5:23Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.
- 5:28Then, he added. Pay close attention to what you
- 5:31hear. The closer you listen, the more
- 5:34understanding you will be given, and you will receive even more.
- 5:39To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding
- 5:42will be given. But for those who are not
- 5:45listening, even what little understanding they have will be
- 5:48taken away from them. Jesus also said the Kingdom of
- 5:54God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground
- 5:58night and day. While he is asleep or awake.
- 6:01The seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it
- 6:06happens. The earth produces the crop on
- 6:09its own. First a leaf blade pushes
- 6:12through, then the heads of wheat are formed and finally the grain
- 6:16ripens. And as soon as the grain is
- 6:19ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle for
- 6:23the harvest. Time has come, Jesus said.
- 6:27How can I describe the Kingdom of God?
- 6:30What story should I use to illustrate it?
- 6:33It is like a mustard seed planted in the ground.
- 6:36It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of
- 6:41all garden plants. It grows long branches and birds
- 6:45can make nests in its shade. Jesus used many similar stories
- 6:50in illustrations to teach the people as much as they could
- 6:54understand. In fact, in his public ministry
- 6:58he never taught without using parables.
- 7:01But afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained
- 7:05everything to them. As evening came, Jesus said to
- 7:10his disciples, let's cross to the other side of the lake.
- 7:15So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the
- 7:18crowds behind, although other boats followed.
- 7:22But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into
- 7:27the boat, and it began to fill with water.
- 7:31Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a
- 7:34cushion. The disciples woke him up,
- 7:36shouting, Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?
- 7:41When Jesus woke up here, rebuked the wind and said to the waves,
- 7:46silence, be still. Suddenly the wind stopped and
- 7:53there was a great calm. Then he asked them, Why were you
- 7:57afraid? Do you still have no faith?
- 8:02The disciples were absolutely terrified.
- 8:05Who is this man? They asked each other.
- 8:09Even the wind and waves obey him.
- 8:23Jesus, as we listen to your teaching, we hear so clearly
- 8:28that you tell us that your ways and the lessons that you want us
- 8:34to learn are so foreign to what this world will tell us that we
- 8:39just cannot wrap our heads around it.
- 8:42And it's only your gift of understanding that can help us
- 8:46see your truth. Holy Spirit, we pray that you
- 8:51would grow in us and understanding of you and your
- 8:56mission and your Kingdom priorities help that become the
- 9:02lens through which we see the world.
- 9:05Shape us so that we can be unified in purpose with your
- 9:11will. Yeah, we love you Lord, and we
- 9:14wanna see your Kingdom be your reality around us.
- 9:19Give us an understanding, and thank you that you don't only
- 9:26give us that gift of understanding, but you stand
- 9:30before us in your power and your Majesty that rules over
- 9:36everything. Even even the wind and the waves
- 9:39obey you. So we just submit ourselves to
- 9:43you, your wisdom, your might, and your rule.
- 9:49Let me pray all of this in your name.
- 9:51I'm in.
