Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the Minister of Police Mark Mitchell doing a bit
- 0:03Speaker 1: of a victory lap yesterday on crime stats. Here they
- 0:06Speaker 1: are ram raids. This is a January to December twenty
- 0:09Speaker 1: three verse twenty four. Ram raids down sixty one percent,
- 0:13Speaker 1: foot patrols up thirty percent. Who would have thought there'd
- 0:15Speaker 1: be a correlation. Total victimizations down three percent, serious assaults
- 0:21Speaker 1: down three percent, aggravated robbery down eleven percent. Theft and
- 0:26Speaker 1: related offenses though up twelve percent. Joining us now is
- 0:31Speaker 1: Ash Palmer. He's the vice Chairpisson for Daring Business Owners
- 0:34Speaker 1: Group Ash.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Good morning, Good morning Rain.
- 0:37Speaker 1: These numbers sound right to you, Yeah, they do.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Especially the ram raids. You know, it was a big
- 0:44Speaker 2: concern for a long, long period of time and the
- 0:47Speaker 2: wast quite shocking, especially the human cost of it when
- 0:49Speaker 2: you come to your workplace, which is quite sacred to
- 0:52Speaker 2: a lot of the retailers. They do spend long time
- 0:54Speaker 2: in their workplace and to come to work sort of
- 0:58Speaker 2: the you know, the night and alarm goes on and
- 1:00Speaker 2: seeing it all completely destroyed, it is absolutely all crushing.
- 1:04Speaker 2: So it's good to see at least that number is dropping.
- 1:07Speaker 2: And that was just too easy for too long. But
- 1:10Speaker 2: the police has clammed down and a lot of these
- 1:13Speaker 2: youths who in particular we're doing it, are getting picked
- 1:15Speaker 2: up a lot regularly.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Right, So that's what's made the difference. It's not the
- 1:20Speaker 1: foot patrols because the stuff happens at night, doesn't it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So it's it's their following up on these particular young
- 1:26Speaker 1: people and they're stopping them from doing it again, that's
- 1:29Speaker 1: what you're seeing.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, I mean the foot patrols would probably help
- 1:34Speaker 2: during the day quite a bit. Yeah, in terms of
- 1:36Speaker 2: that more opportunity crime, you know, they're shoplifting or that
- 1:39Speaker 2: sort of coming in, running, running with stuff. But the
- 1:42Speaker 2: ram raids in particular was prone. I used to talk
- 1:45Speaker 2: to you quite a bit in your previous role as
- 1:47Speaker 2: well about it. It was just we just needed a
- 1:49Speaker 2: little bit more tightening from the police. Other things. It
- 1:52Speaker 2: seems like the new goverment has done, especially for those
- 1:55Speaker 2: sort of fifteen to eighteen year olds. You know, hey,
- 1:57Speaker 2: this is not good and we are going to pick
- 1:59Speaker 2: you up. That seems to be happening.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Now, what about with the foot patrols during the day,
- 2:03Speaker 1: just the shop owners feeling do they feel safer knowing
- 2:06Speaker 1: there are cops around the corner.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. One of the things we are hoping for
- 2:12Speaker 2: a DN now is a lot of our reporting is
- 2:14Speaker 2: going into their one or five tool, but we're not
- 2:17Speaker 2: necessarily hearing back for police sometimes in a timely manner.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So that's kind of like the next next phase. I
- 2:24Speaker 2: guess we're hoping, you know, like, yes, it's good to
- 2:26Speaker 2: ever foot patrol that if a retailer is putting a
- 2:29Speaker 2: one or five board, we wanted to be followed up
- 2:31Speaker 2: in a timely manner and that's just not happening all
- 2:35Speaker 2: the time. So there's definitely a lot more to be desired.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but on the whole, on the whole, it's an
- 2:42Speaker 1: improvement for you, Ash, which is well, it's great news, actually,
- 2:45Speaker 1: isn't it, Because we've been for years now talking about this,
- 2:48Speaker 1: hoping for some kind of reprie Vash Param a vice
- 2:50Speaker 1: chairperson Daring Business Owners Group. There on the stats which
- 2:54Speaker 1: show in particular, ram raids down sixty one percent and
- 2:57Speaker 1: foot patrols up thirty percent. Who would have thought it
- 3:00Speaker 1: could be so simple? You just have police on the
- 3:02Speaker 1: street and criminals don't do as much crime. I mean, wow,
- 3:07Speaker 1: my mind is blown Ginny Anderson didn't want to come
- 3:10Speaker 1: on the show to talk about these numbers. By the way,
- 3:13Speaker 1: for more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live
- 3:16Speaker 1: to news Talks it'd be from five am weekdays, or
