Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, emilyah Baudi here you are listening to five
- 0:24Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. Okay, before I really get into
- 0:29Speaker 1: anything today, I need to take a moment to say
- 0:31Speaker 1: congratulations to one of my dearest, most special friends, my
- 0:36Speaker 1: college roommate. Her name is Ashley. She's getting married today.
- 0:41Speaker 1: She's also a Hurdler of note. I am so I'm
- 0:45Speaker 1: so grateful for you, and I'm so happy for you,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and literally I wish for a love like that beautiful
- 0:53Speaker 1: love that you have with Adam. I'm like crying talking
- 0:56Speaker 1: about this already. I also wish that we could all
- 1:00Speaker 1: be together tonight. She's having a small, beautiful, intimate ceremony
- 1:03Speaker 1: with just their close family this evening. Congrats, baby, I
- 1:08Speaker 1: love you, and you had to expect me to like
- 1:11Speaker 1: hype you up just a little bit. Okay, now that
- 1:14Speaker 1: that's done, I digress. I've been thinking a lot about
- 1:17Speaker 1: the why behind this segment lately. If you have started
- 1:23Speaker 1: listening to the show in the past year or so,
- 1:25Speaker 1: you may not remember Hurdle before five Minute Friday. But
- 1:29Speaker 1: basically I started these little let's call them monologues talks
- 1:35Speaker 1: whatnot a third installment of the show during the week.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I started them during the pandemic because I had I
- 1:42Speaker 1: had some time I wanted to bring some newness to
- 1:45Speaker 1: the feed I was sitting in my apartment alone for
- 1:48Speaker 1: days on end, and I was like, why not just
- 1:51Speaker 1: throw another episode into the mix? And it's it's interesting
- 1:54Speaker 1: to me because you know, I started it, and I
- 1:56Speaker 1: didn't have a plan for it, and I didn't know
- 1:59Speaker 1: how long I would do it for, if I would
- 2:00Speaker 1: keep on doing it or whatever. And the feedback that
- 2:05Speaker 1: I get time and time again from all of you
- 2:07Speaker 1: is that this is honestly one of your favorite parts
- 2:09Speaker 1: of the show, and it makes me happy. It's fulfilling
- 2:14Speaker 1: for me because that means that you like me, right,
- 2:18Speaker 1: because five Minute Friday it's just me every week, and
- 2:22Speaker 1: it's just me bringing you some of what's going on
- 2:25Speaker 1: in my life in a way that makes me feel
- 2:28Speaker 1: comfortable and hopefully is helpful for you. Anyway, I digress.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So the reason I am jamming about this is because
- 2:36Speaker 1: I've been asking myself what is my why when it
- 2:39Speaker 1: comes to a lot of the things that I am
- 2:41Speaker 1: doing lately. I found myself in a little bit of
- 2:44Speaker 1: a rut last week after my long run on my
- 2:48Speaker 1: long run. I ran a twenty miler, one of the
- 2:51Speaker 1: longest runs in this training cycle last Saturday, and the
- 2:54Speaker 1: run was I'll just say it, it was awful. I
- 2:58Speaker 1: was really in my head. There were a lot of
- 3:02Speaker 1: feelings that were coming up. I feel like in every
- 3:04Speaker 1: single marathon training cycle for me, what happens is I
- 3:07Speaker 1: have like one or two long runs that are just
- 3:10Speaker 1: absolutely like soul crushing, and that all these emotions come
- 3:14Speaker 1: up and you want to cry the entire time, and
- 3:16Speaker 1: it's probably just like super hot, or it's raining, and
- 3:20Speaker 1: there's so many things that are out of your control
- 3:22Speaker 1: and it is just it's no boy now. And so
- 3:25Speaker 1: that was me last Saturday, and it, as I said,
- 3:29Speaker 1: brought up a lot of emotions and thoughts and things
- 3:34Speaker 1: that I didn't really want to confront to be honest
- 3:38Speaker 1: with you. Fast forward to Tuesday morning. Met up with
- 3:43Speaker 1: a girlfriend to do some more running, and I grabbed
- 3:48Speaker 1: some coffee, and then I went to the East River
- 3:53Speaker 1: Track in New York and I did some strength work
- 3:57Speaker 1: with some of my friends from my run cloth ub
- 4:01Speaker 1: and then I came back to my apartment and I
- 4:02Speaker 1: showered and I was like playing music and getting ready
- 4:05Speaker 1: for my day. And like emptying the dishwasher. I had
- 4:09Speaker 1: a call with my mom, I think, and then I
- 4:12Speaker 1: sat down at my desk and I had this blaring
- 4:17Speaker 1: realization after coming down from like I mentioned a super
- 4:20Speaker 1: emotional weekend, that I wasn't anxious. I'm without words because
- 4:30Speaker 1: I can't tell you the last time that I have
- 4:35Speaker 1: wasn't feeling anxious, especially as COVID is taking these turns
- 4:40Speaker 1: and we don't know what's going on, and there's so
- 4:42Speaker 1: much unknown, and I'm like training for this marathon. I
- 4:44Speaker 1: don't know if this marathon is gonna happen. I'm walking
- 4:46Speaker 1: around wearing my mask. I'm single, and I'm thirty three,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and I am just like what am I doing with
- 4:53Speaker 1: my life? I constantly feel anxious, and something somewhere along
- 4:57Speaker 1: the way on Tuesday morning, I just decided not to
- 4:59Speaker 1: give any of my anxieties any of my effing attention,
- 5:03Speaker 1: And holy shit, was it invigorating. Like I really can't
- 5:08Speaker 1: tell you the last time that I didn't spend unnecessary effort,
- 5:12Speaker 1: like thinking about someone who hadn't treated me right, whether
- 5:15Speaker 1: that's like in business or in my relationships, or I
- 5:19Speaker 1: wasn't freaking out about the things that I can't control
- 5:22Speaker 1: about COVID or I wasn't thinking about a deadline or
- 5:25Speaker 1: something that I was like worried about making. And I
- 5:29Speaker 1: just went through an entire morning, like maybe four or
- 5:32Speaker 1: five hours, just living my damn life. And I like
- 5:38Speaker 1: giggle because I'm like, shoot, it shouldn't be that hard, right,
- 5:41Speaker 1: Like I started to ask myself, like how can I
- 5:44Speaker 1: do that more? I keep citing this stat when it
- 5:48Speaker 1: comes to COVID, and I don't want to spread misinformation,
- 5:51Speaker 1: but it came from the Daily, And on the Daily
- 5:53Speaker 1: they said that one percent of vaccinated people will get COVID. Again,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I don't know if this is relevant. Do not spew
- 6:02Speaker 1: this into the world. I'm just telling you that that
- 6:06Speaker 1: was what they said, which means that ninety nine percent
- 6:08Speaker 1: of vaccinated people and I am vaccinated, will not get COVID.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So I ask myself all the time, even though I
- 6:17Speaker 1: have this like bumping anxiety in the center of my
- 6:21Speaker 1: body about this thing, like why can I not live
- 6:24Speaker 1: my life like the ninety nine percent? And on Tuesday
- 6:29Speaker 1: I felt like I did, like I and I wasn't
- 6:32Speaker 1: doing anything crazy right, Like I wasn't in the middle
- 6:34Speaker 1: of a warehouse party, but just to like have that
- 6:39Speaker 1: time with myself and like be so I was so
- 6:42Speaker 1: happy that morning and so grateful to feel that way,
- 6:46Speaker 1: And this is it's certainly just it's an experience I
- 6:50Speaker 1: wanted to share with you, and it's something that I
- 6:52Speaker 1: feel so damn grateful for and something that I think
- 6:54Speaker 1: many of us have come out of the last sixteen
- 6:57Speaker 1: eighteen months with right this beautiful, small appreciation for the small,
- 7:04Speaker 1: beautiful moments and all of these moments. I'm here to
- 7:09Speaker 1: bring it full circle, have me coming back to my
- 7:14Speaker 1: Why am I doing the things that fill me up?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Am I giving the right things my attention? Why do
- 7:23Speaker 1: I want to give these things my attention? And how
- 7:27Speaker 1: can I just be happy being my best me? Who
- 7:32Speaker 1: long excel? My prompt for you this week kind of related,
- 7:37Speaker 1: kind of not just something to think about what makes
- 7:42Speaker 1: you happy? Again? What makes you happy? Really think about
- 7:48Speaker 1: that one? You know, And I've said this before on
- 7:51Speaker 1: the show, but I'm gonna kind of follow up this
- 7:52Speaker 1: prompt with just like a little moment here. If you
- 7:57Speaker 1: make this list and you are going through a time
- 8:02Speaker 1: a time where you don't have hours like I did
- 8:07Speaker 1: on Tuesday morning, this list is your opportunity, right, Because
- 8:14Speaker 1: sometimes I pull out lists I've made like this when
- 8:18Speaker 1: I'm struggling and I just pick something to do, I
- 8:22Speaker 1: honestly might not really want to do it. I might
- 8:24Speaker 1: not want to go sit and have a glass of
- 8:26Speaker 1: wine by myself at a bar and read a book.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I might not want to go for a run. I
- 8:31Speaker 1: might not have the feel like I have the emotional
- 8:33Speaker 1: bandwidth to like get together with a girlfriend and take
- 8:36Speaker 1: a nice walk through Soho. But I know that those
- 8:40Speaker 1: are activities that bring me joy and that I have
- 8:43Speaker 1: the opportunity to go find and make my own happiness.
- 8:48Speaker 1: So again, what makes you happy? And you know what,
- 8:53Speaker 1: while you're at making a list, tag me on Instagram?
- 8:56Speaker 1: It would really it means the world to me when
- 8:58Speaker 1: you guys interact with me on Instagram. And I do
- 9:01Speaker 1: want to, you know, apologize, because I do the best
- 9:03Speaker 1: I can to get back to the many dms that
- 9:06Speaker 1: I get on the regular as fast and expedited as
- 9:09Speaker 1: I can. But tag the show. Tag me. Let's like
- 9:13Speaker 1: hype this up. Let's just be proud of each other.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Let's be each other's biggest hype man. And now a
- 9:21Speaker 1: listener question.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, hope you're doing well. Reaching out because I'm
- 9:27Speaker 2: about to move to New York City. This is the
- 9:30Speaker 2: first time that I will be moving out of state
- 9:34Speaker 2: and away from my family, and it's a really big
- 9:38Speaker 2: move for me, obviously New York City. So I was
- 9:41Speaker 2: wondering if you could provide some tips to adjust to
- 9:46Speaker 2: the city life, meet new people, and just yeah, anything
- 9:50Speaker 2: that anything that's helped you over the years. Would love
- 9:53Speaker 2: to hear it. Thanks so much.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Wow, I can probably record an entire episode just on this.
- 10:01Speaker 1: First of all, congratulations. Moving to New York is a
- 10:04Speaker 1: major milestone. It was something I looked forward to doing
- 10:07Speaker 1: literally my entire existence, my entire life growing up just
- 10:11Speaker 1: over an hour and change outside of the city. I
- 10:14Speaker 1: saved for i'd say about a year and a half
- 10:18Speaker 1: after graduating college before I made the hop over to
- 10:21Speaker 1: New York into my first apartment, which was a flex
- 10:24Speaker 1: two bedroom which means that the apartment was technically a
- 10:27Speaker 1: one bedroom apartment where they put up a fake wall
- 10:30Speaker 1: to make it two bedrooms. I walked in and a
- 10:33Speaker 1: Los Arajisica Parker. I think I've said this on the
- 10:35Speaker 1: show before, but I was like, this is real estate Heaven. Granted.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Sarah Jusica Parker's real estate heaven in the Sex and
- 10:41Speaker 1: the City movie was like a like four bedroom penthouse
- 10:44Speaker 1: with a courtyard somehow on the top of it. But
- 10:47Speaker 1: my flex two bed was great. Best tips for New
- 10:51Speaker 1: New Yorkers. First of all, like, you didn't move to
- 10:54Speaker 1: New York to stay in your home, So when you
- 10:58Speaker 1: get here, make plan in whatever capacity you feel comfortable.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Of course at this point making plans, but get out
- 11:05Speaker 1: and you can make plans with just yourself. Of course,
- 11:08Speaker 1: you can make plans if you happen to know people
- 11:10Speaker 1: that may be living here, and you can also make
- 11:12Speaker 1: plans that help introduce you to other New Yorkers. There
- 11:15Speaker 1: are so many different avenues to meet new people in
- 11:19Speaker 1: this city, whether it is going out for a walk.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I mean, I live not far from Fort Green Park
- 11:24Speaker 1: in Brooklyn. There are off leash hours until nine am.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Sometimes I feel kind of creepy because I'm walking around
- 11:30Speaker 1: the park without a dog and there are so many
- 11:32Speaker 1: dog owners there. But that's like a great opportunity in
- 11:35Speaker 1: time of day for me to like friendly, say hello,
- 11:39Speaker 1: meet people in my neighborhood. Great opportunity. Of course, it's
- 11:42Speaker 1: inevitable that. I tell you there are tons of running
- 11:45Speaker 1: clubs out here in New York if you are an
- 11:48Speaker 1: avid runner and you want to do that, but also
- 11:50Speaker 1: just so many different opportunities to find community outside of that.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I know you're probably going to want to do a
- 11:55Speaker 1: lot of the touristy stuff, and I don't blame you,
- 11:57Speaker 1: So check that stuff off your list. But then make
- 12:00Speaker 1: a list And I did this when I moved here,
- 12:02Speaker 1: of fifty different things that you want to do, whether
- 12:06Speaker 1: that's try out different restaurants, go to different cafes, go
- 12:09Speaker 1: to different distilleries and breweries and parks and all of
- 12:12Speaker 1: the things. Make this list so that when the weekend
- 12:16Speaker 1: comes around and you're not exactly sure what you want
- 12:18Speaker 1: to do, you can look at this list, just like
- 12:20Speaker 1: your happiness list, and pick something that excites you that
- 12:24Speaker 1: you can check off and keep going and keep exploring. Yeah,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I'm going to give a top level highlights of suggestions
- 12:32Speaker 1: for your first few months in the city. You know,
- 12:34Speaker 1: I'm going to lean into our premi Vix is another
- 12:36Speaker 1: one of my favorite restaurants. If you're new to New York,
- 12:39Speaker 1: then you need to do like the stereotypical New York
- 12:41Speaker 1: hype things like go to catch or Beauty and Essex
- 12:45Speaker 1: of course, run the outer loop of Central Park, or
- 12:47Speaker 1: go walk around the reservoir at ninetieth Street. Make sure
- 12:50Speaker 1: that you go to the museums like the met in
- 12:53Speaker 1: the Museum of the City of New York, which I
- 12:55Speaker 1: still need to get to. Don't sleep on going to
- 12:57Speaker 1: the Top of the Edge, or the Top of the
- 12:59Speaker 1: Rock or the Empire State Building. One of my favorite
- 13:02Speaker 1: things I've ever done in New York is actually take
- 13:04Speaker 1: a bike tour of Lower Manhattan. I learned so much,
- 13:07Speaker 1: which was so interesting because I've lived here for what
- 13:09Speaker 1: feels like forever now, which is actually just over ten years,
- 13:13Speaker 1: and I walk by so much of this stuff all
- 13:15Speaker 1: the time, but have never really taken the time to
- 13:17Speaker 1: learn about it. So the bike tour was dope. There's
- 13:20Speaker 1: so much good coffee I can't even begin to get
- 13:23Speaker 1: into it. Same with cocktails. Some of my favorite cocktail
- 13:25Speaker 1: spots Rain's Lawroom, the Bar at the Nomad, have one
- 13:30Speaker 1: Crazy Night at PhD on top of the Dream Hotel,
- 13:33Speaker 1: I have had way too many to count. The Hoxton
- 13:36Speaker 1: and Williamsburg, The Williamsburg Hotel and the william Vale all
- 13:40Speaker 1: have really really beautiful rooftops, like literally again, I could
- 13:43Speaker 1: sit here going on for hours. So I hope that
- 13:45Speaker 1: some of these suggestions are helpful, and again soak it in.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Pay attention. Don't walk around staring at your phone. Walk
- 13:52Speaker 1: around and stare at the beauty that is this unbelievable
- 13:55Speaker 1: city that now you live in. Feel free. If anyone
- 13:59Speaker 1: has any other yor questions or any questions, leave me
- 14:03Speaker 1: a voice message. The link to do that is in
- 14:06Speaker 1: the show notes. I'm going to be doing a special
- 14:08Speaker 1: Hurdler's Questions episode when it comes to all questions running
- 14:12Speaker 1: With the upcoming marathon season, I'm getting a lot of
- 14:15Speaker 1: my dms and I just don't have the time to
- 14:17Speaker 1: answer them all one on one. Plus, I'd love to
- 14:19Speaker 1: use it as a resource a link to send to
- 14:21Speaker 1: people going forward. So if you have any running specific questions,
- 14:24Speaker 1: pretty pretty please take a moment and leave me a
- 14:26Speaker 1: voice message. Appreciate you as always. You know how to
- 14:30Speaker 1: find me over on social I'm over at Emily Body
- 14:32Speaker 1: and the show is at Hurdle Podcast Another Hurdle Conquered.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Have a good one y'all. Catch you guys next time.
