- 0:05SPEAKER_04: Welcome back to yet another exciting episode of the Steve and Jeff Show.
- 0:09SPEAKER_04: I'm Steve.
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: And I'm Jeff.
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: I know I'm back to my original tagline, Steve.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: But it just makes it like a warm blanket.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: It is Jeff, Steve.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: It is, Jeff.
- 0:18SPEAKER_04: It's good.
- 0:19SPEAKER_04: And people, people love it.
- 0:20SPEAKER_04: Our audience loves it.
- 0:21SPEAKER_04: The millions.
- 0:22SPEAKER_04: And I Jeff, the millions.
- 0:23SPEAKER_04: Come on, let's be honest.
- 0:24SPEAKER_04: The millions that listen to this love that.
- 0:26SPEAKER_04: It's our tone, it's our vibe.
- 0:28SPEAKER_04: It's our pitch.
- 0:30SPEAKER_04: It's our tenor.
- 0:31SPEAKER_04: It's our alto.
- 0:32SPEAKER_04: It's everything.
- 0:33SPEAKER_04: Jeff.
- 0:33SPEAKER_04: Jeff, that is how people know us.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: And Steve, I think I'm going to get it trademarked because you just don't hear that about any.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: I don't think I've ever heard anyone say, How's it going, Steve?
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: No, not even Ed McMahon.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: Remember Ed McMahon on the old Johnny Carson show?
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: He wouldn't say, How's it going, Johnny?
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: That's your here's Johnny.
- 0:53SPEAKER_04: It's my that's perfect.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: That is perfect, Jeff.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's that's it exactly.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: Oh, and Jeff, things are going great.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: I tell you, I I took another look at uh Google Apathetics, and yeah, not that I really care what they say, but our numbers are way up, Jeff.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: And that show we did last week, giving it all up for the sponsors.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: Jeff, I have had so many nice letters.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: Well, they were all from sponsors, but the sponsors all wrote us really nice letters saying, Thank you so much.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: It was beautiful.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: We're going to advertise, and we got a new one tonight that I can't wait to show you.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: So a friend of a friend of one of us sponsors we were nice to, you know, sent a new one over.
- 1:29SPEAKER_04: So Jeff, it's just going so well.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: My life has, you know, is has become fairly multidimensional.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: You know, I've got this incredibly successful podcast with you.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: Does multidimensional hurt?
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: You know, I I do a little writing for a blog.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: But my third job, the one that I I really, you know, pays the bills.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: The one that actually you get income from.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: That I get some income from.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: No.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Um, is I Uber.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: And uh I'm actually Lyft, but I I prefer to say Uber because I'm super funnier.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: Well, it's funnier, and I don't think Lyft really appreciates my effort.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: So I you know, I want to give a little bit of a shout out to Uber.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: You know, you gotta put your shoulder into it, you know, and and do it with your knees, uh, not your back.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, not your back.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: Oh gosh, try trust me on that one.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: Don't do that.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: So I you know, I've been doing some Ubering, you know, and I've been doing that for a little while now.
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: And and I have to be honest, Steve, you know, talk about carrying the load.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Historically, Steve, you have been the one that have brought has brought on all the guests.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: Um, I usually don't even know.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: I keep thinking it's my dad or somebody I can guess.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: But you have you have really carried the weight.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Clearly, you're you're bending over at the knees, you know, when you do that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: And I'm putting my shoulder into it, and it's it's it's my load, you know.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, as far as loads, Steve.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: Yours is the biggest.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: I have the biggest load.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: But it's but it's a it's a pleasure burden.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: It's a load of pleasure.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: Yes, and and I've appreciated it, and to be honest, the million was a million point eight five billion fans that we have that listen to us.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: That's the exact number.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: Yes, that is exactly that's the exact number.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: They come because of the quality of our guests, and that is attributed specifically to you.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: So we're coming.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: I think we are on our annu anniversary, our one-year anniversary.
- 3:30SPEAKER_04: We're right around there, Jeff.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: I don't remember the exact date.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: It was in somewhere.
- 3:33SPEAKER_04: It was last week, this week.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: It was in there somewhere.
- 3:37SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I used to have a boss who said it doesn't matter what the anniversary really is, you just say what it is.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: So I think we can probably say it's been a year.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: And and my resolution.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's right.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: My resolution to you and the show is that I'm gonna try to do a little bit more.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: And this is a demonstration of that.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: I have a guest for us.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: And this is I'm very nervous because I wish it was my dad's close.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: I almost had my dad, except I couldn't find him and haven't spoken to him.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: Well, Jeff, you know, Tippy's in July yet.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: I think you're gonna hear some good news from her.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: She's working on she's working hard on this, you know.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: She's absolutely but I don't get out a whole lot.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: But when I do get out, I'm Ubering and I meet a lot of interesting people along the way.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: And this guest that I'm I'm gonna introduce to you, to you, and to the audience is a fascinating person that I think that everybody will enjoy hearing more about.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: His name is Joe.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: He's from the south side of Chicago.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: And Joe, I want to welcome you to our show, to the Steve and Jeff show.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Jeff.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Thank you, thank you, thank you, Jeffrey.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: And uh thank you for the uh lift.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, no problem.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: Um thank you for the tip.
- 4:51SPEAKER_03: It is interesting, Steve.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: Old people give you the tip in cash.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, everybody else uses the the app.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: And uh Joe ended up giving me like this uh roll of quarters.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: And I appreciate it because you know, if I ever needed to pay a toll, which I don't anymore, then you know I would have the quarters.
- 5:11SPEAKER_04: And then the problem, when you get these Gen Xers, they try to do both and they give you the Cash App, and then you wind up getting shot.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: I mean, what the heck?
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: You know, I mean what's it's it's crazy.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: What's up with that?
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: But but I digress.
- 5:23SPEAKER_04: But Joe, welcome to the show.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: Welcome to eccentric Lady Land Studios.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: Good to have you here.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: Uh thank you, boys.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: Joe, in a in a in addition to being before we start, before we start, Jeff, I can I can I tap the glass?
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: It's just you know, it's it's it's a hook, it's a crutch.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: And all right, yeah, and you and you really and you really need to trademark that, Steve, because I I've never heard that either.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: No, nobody does that, right?
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: I'll pretend it's not there, but no, it's right there.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: See?
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know what you're thinking, Steve.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: You're thinking, okay, so this is the first time you brought a guest on, and he's famous because he you gave him a ride in a car.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: It's not true, Steve.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: There is a backstory of this.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: So you didn't give him a ride in the car.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: All right, okay.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Okay, well, I did give him a ride in the car.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: Oh, so it's true.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: Okay, yes, it is it is true, and he that would be enough to have him on as a guest.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: But in addition to that, Joe has a fascinating history.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: He's a guy, you know, kind of an older guy, right, Joe?
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: You're you're probably over 60, certainly.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, yes, between 60 and 110, almost equivalent.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Yes, he's older than us.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Although, Steve, you come from the past and the future.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: So I do.
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: I I'm truly ageless because, you know, it's hard to say.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: I'm actually hundreds of years old, so it's you know, I guess technically, I guess I'm older, but in this space, he's older than us, Jeff.
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: And Steve, one of the things that we talked about when we first started the show was everyday heroes.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: You know, people who people who shine and you, you know, they're not in the spotlight.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: And Joe, when you got in that car, I thought you were just the same, uh, one of those guys I was given a ride to.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: Had no idea how interesting your background was.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: Do you want to kind of start with sharing a little bit of what you told me in the car?
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Well, sure.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, um, a long time ago, I went I went to high school with this guy, uh, all the way back at uh Benson High in Omaha, Nebraska.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Omaha Benson.
- 7:28SPEAKER_04: Oh, Benson's a happening part of town these days.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, well, you should have seen it then.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Anyway, um this guy ends up playing in the major leagues, and uh baseball.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Baseball, correct.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh he was what they called a bonus baby, so he had to go like right to the major leagues right out of high school.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, anyway, a couple years go by, and uh I'm living in Cincinnati, Ohio, and he's playing for the New York Giants.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry, the San Francisco Giants by then.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, but I am old.
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: Oh, you are old, yes.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: See, I've gone back in time and I watched that famous catch.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: I'll tell you, it was pretty darn incredible.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: Are we talking about the guy that I think we're talking about?
- 8:21SPEAKER_04: Willie May.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: Oh, the famous catch, yeah.
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: Willie Mays.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: Willie Mays, but not the guy, not the bonus baby.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: No, that's how that's not Willie Mays, is it?
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: So anyway, it's in Cincinnati.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Uh it's early in 1959 season, and they're coming to town.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: And so I called my buddy up and uh got a hold of him at the hotel, and he was like, Oh, well, come on over.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: We'll we'll have a few with the team.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: And so here I am.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: I'm in the bar with uh Orlando Cepeda.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: Uh baseman.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: Yes, and Willie Mays and all those kinds of guys, they're all there.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: And the various alus, I bet, were there too.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think there was at least one aloo in the room, but it's it was always hard to keep track of the alus.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: I believe I believe it was Philippe that was there.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so we're throwing some, you know, we're throwing back drinks, just drinking and drinking, and I tell you what, it you just wouldn't necessarily know this, but uh the third baseman was a guy named Jim Davenport, and he had absolutely the dirtiest sense of humor.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: He was he was telling just filthy joke after filthy joke, and we are just hammered in the hotel bar with all these wonderful Major League Baseball players.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, I bet that's why they call third base the hot corner.
- 9:58SPEAKER_04: Because they have that dirty sense of humor, you know.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you can't get away with that at first base because there's an umpire standing right there all the time just killing the buzz, you know.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: Well, and the third third base ump is way back.
- 10:11SPEAKER_04: You can say whatever you want.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: He can't even, and most of them can't see either.
- 10:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, no, of course they can't.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: That's part of the job, is you're not supposed to be able to see.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: And so do you remember the joke, or was it one of these off-color kind of all I remember is the punchline, and it was the altar boy said, No, I think it's reflection off the shoes.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: I I don't remember the joke.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: I just remember the punchline.
- 10:43SPEAKER_04: That's uh you know, you know, Joe, that is such a good punchline.
- 10:47SPEAKER_04: I'm going to before our next show, I'm going to construct a joke where that is the punchline, and we'll see if it's it might be the same joke.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: So uh we're just hammered and the other sports writers there.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: It's the 50s, you know, everything's casual, and we're just I'm way too drunk to go home.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: So my buddy Jack says, Well, come on up, he's crash with us.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: So there are like three, four guys, and it's the 50s.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: If you're not Willie Mays has his own room, but he's the only one.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: The rest of the guys, you know, are two, three, four to a room.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: So we're there, and and the next day comes up, and it's a Saturday, and we go to the ballpark there in Cincinnati, and Jackie's so drunk he can't even get get up.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: He's still hammered.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not like you're hung over, it's like you're still drunk, hung over.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: And anyway, uh, we're like, Well, what the hell are we gonna do?
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: You we can't just go to the ballpark without him.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: And then it's like, well, they looked at me and we were about the same size.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: They said, Okay, today you're Jackie.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: What the hell?
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: Wow, what the hell am I supposed to do?
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: And they said, Well, don't worry, it's your day off.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I'm I've got my day off, uh-huh.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: And uh I'm coming up there, and I just sit in the dugout, I keep my hat down, you know, my giant's hat, I keep it down and sit at the end so that nobody can see me.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Because I tell you, you know, that old manager they had, you know, he was a real fuss budget.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, you know, yeah.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: And you know, I gotta say though, you know, uh Bill Rigney, uh, you know, from his perspective, if you got a guy that's nay on your goddamn team sitting in your dugout wearing a uniform with a number on it.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, what the hell?
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: Well, um he he was probably drinking with you too.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, you know, I'm sure.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, and I I gotta tell you, it was still the 50s.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: But I'm not so sure there wasn't blow in that room.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Let me just say that.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: I'm not positive one way or the other.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: Anyway, that existed way before the 80s.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: I'm sitting there, you know, like a stump or a shump or whatever.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Just keep schlump, yeah.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, schlump, just keep my head down.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Don't don't cause no problems.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: And uh I'm getting almost all the way through this game, you see.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: If fifth inning comes along, or the fifth, no, it's the bottom of the seventh.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: And Mr.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Rigney looks down and he goes, Brent, get in the game, go hit, go Wagner.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: I'm like, what in uh holy hell am I supposed to do at this point?
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: So I just grab a bat and I went up there, and you know, half the guys in the dugout are laughing, half of the guys are horrified.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Rigney is still he's probably too hung over to really notice.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: And why he had me pinch hitting for for Wagner, I don't know.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Anyway, I went up there, I struck out, came back to the bench.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: They said, Okay, you're out in left field now.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: I'm like, what in the hell?
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: I'm in the goddamn game, and I caught one one fly ball, that was it.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: They only hit one fly ball out to me, and and I managed it was just a little little pop.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: I caught it, and I went back in the dugout.
- 14:25SPEAKER_04: So you you actually caught a major league fly ball.
- 14:29SPEAKER_04: I did.
- 14:30SPEAKER_04: Hit by a Cincinnati red.
- 14:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: Joe, do you have a did you play baseball growing up, or was was this completely nude for you and you were just lucky, or how how how did you well he wasn't completely it wasn't completely nude, Jeff.
- 14:46SPEAKER_04: He probably had a Giants uniform on.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: Well, there you go.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, those old flannel uniforms back then.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: It was probably it was probably pretty hot.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: It it hid a lot.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, I bet it was a lot to hide.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Um I got up there, yeah.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: I I'd played a little ball, you know, in Little League, but you know, that doesn't prepare you for major league pitching.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: It's a little different, yeah.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Which is why I struck out.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: But in any event, uh I'm the only person that is known to have played in a major league baseball game without being credited to play in a major league baseball game because the original player was too drunk.
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: You're not even in the baseball encyclopedia.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: No.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: Wow, they probably have it listed that the drunk guy was in that game and struck, they credited him a strikeout, if that's a credit.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, more like a debit, but you know, like a debit, but yeah, it'll be a card.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: And I think you told me uh correct me if I'm wrong because uh when I was driving you, I thought you told me that because you struck out the player that you substituted for lost the batting title by one point because of you striking out in his name.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: Is that wow?
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: Is that what I remember?
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: That's what happened.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: That's what happened.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: He could have won the batting title.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Wow, he just he won a gold glove that year, but no batting title because of that.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: Well, he won a gold glove because of you.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: You're the one that made that catch.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: You made the catch, right?
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if I'd have dropped it, see that was like the good news, bad news.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: If I'd have dropped the fly ball, that would have given him the error, and he wouldn't uh it wouldn't have uh got the uh gold glove, but uh the you know the strikeout and what well it seems like you ought to get at least a finger on that golden glove, maybe maybe the thumb, maybe the webbing or something.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: I don't know, I don't know.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: Well, but uh the the other side of it was on the ride back because we had to get ourselves back to the hotel, but I was still you know wearing the uniform and all, and chicks like a guy in uniform.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: What can I tell you?
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: It doesn't matter women, so oh yeah I got you know some major league action at that night, too.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: Not just not just not just that was a good Saturday.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: What can I tell you?
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Speaking of hooking up with women, I also remember you telling me in the car that one of the women that you hooked up with, maybe the woman that you hooked up with, ended up being coming famous herself.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: And I thought that was a fascinating angle to the story.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: I uh you know, I don't like the kiss and tall, but you know, everybody else is dead, so I don't see the the harm anymore.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: It was weird, you know.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: You you go and you to the movies later in your life and you're looking up on the screen, and there's uh Barbara Eaton, you know, Barbara.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: She was passing through Cincinnati that night, and uh yeah.
- 17:48SPEAKER_04: And big baseball fan, I'm sure.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: She was that night.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Anyway, yeah, she was a sweet kid, sweet kid.
- 18:00SPEAKER_04: And uh so you were dreaming of Jeannie pretty early on there.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: And that was where it gets like even stranger because I was like I I was just telling her, it's like, oh, you know, you're an actor.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: I've always had this fascination, you know, because we're getting into the space race at that time.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: And I said, What if you had an astronaut living with a genie?
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: And um oh my wow.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that was uh completely uh my idea.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: Now, when you say sweet kid, just for clarification purposes, how old was Barbara at that time?
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: This is 1959, 1958?
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Uh 59, yeah.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: Um she's about 90 now, so yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: I didn't check the ID, but you know, it was well they let her in the bar, didn't they?
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: But I bet in 1959 that was no big deal to get let in a bar.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: They let you know nine-year-olds in and drink.
- 19:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, that was no big deal, right?
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Well, she was pushing 30, so I mean there you go.
- 19:12SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: Well, I feel bad.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: I feel better, Jeff.
- 19:15SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, me too.
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: I feel better.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: You know, because yeah, because with the show, you know, we got we got certain standards.
- 19:20SPEAKER_04: We got, you know, and and the studio could get in trouble, eccentric lady, and they could cancel our rental agreement, Jeff.
- 19:26SPEAKER_04: That'd be bad.
- 19:27SPEAKER_04: We'd have to do the show outside.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: That would be bad.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: You know, it's funny though, it's being a small world is I don't know if I ever told you, Steve, but I actually went to high school with Larry Hagman, who was in I Dream of Genie.
- 19:38SPEAKER_04: Yes, he was the big drinking the aforementioned astronaut, yes.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: The the aforementioned astronaut, and I didn't know him very well, and I didn't really care to because he wasn't famous when he was in high school.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: But uh, but you know, turns out he ended up being fairly famous and spent a lot of time with Barbara too.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: So I imagine you have that in common with both of them.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I'm trying to sneak back into the hotel, and I'm still wearing the uniform and you know, trying to get it all back in before anybody figures it out.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: And there's this there's this punk high school kid parking cars at the hotel, and he's just gloming, just gloming to get on to you know, any of the ball players.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: And he sees me walking up and he he says, Hey, mister, could you show me something here?
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: I've got this uh problem with my swing.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: And well, I don't know what I'm doing.
- 20:35SPEAKER_04: 1959 and they had swingers, Jeff.
- 20:38SPEAKER_04: I didn't know it was unbelievable.
- 20:40SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Pick your elbow up a little bit.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: And uh he just said, thanks.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: And I said, What's your name, kid?
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because I was gonna fake an autograph for him, and he says, Pete.
- 20:58SPEAKER_04: Oh wow, like a rose.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: Is that where we're we're going?
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: That's where we're going.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: And you know, that little tip on how to hold that elbow up, and now he's the all-time leader in baseball hits show.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: So that was that was me too.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: And you know, just like you were kept out of the baseball encyclopedia, he has been kept out of the hall of fame.
- 21:26SPEAKER_04: Yes, he barely asked me.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: And it happened on the same night.
- 21:30SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh, that is so exciting.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Did he bet you that he could get more hits with his elbow up?
- 21:35SPEAKER_04: Which side of that did you take?
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Realistically, I that is the one regret I have of that night was I bet him 10 bucks that it would work.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: And I think that, you know, set that in motion too.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Well, and I thought, Steve, that he was gonna tell me it was Hank Aaron hammering Hank Aaron, hammered Hank Aaron.
- 21:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: Because it sounds like everybody was working back there.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: All hammered, oh yeah.
- 22:01SPEAKER_04: They were all hammered.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: So but um it's good to know that it was uh Pete somebody, somebody like a flower, like a red flower.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: Someone named Pete who is not in the baseball hall of fame.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: There must be millions, right?
- 22:15SPEAKER_04: There are millions of pete that are not in the baseball hall of fame.
- 22:18SPEAKER_04: We're not necessarily talking about anyone in particular.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Now, Steve, this is kind of up your alley here, being from the future and and and you know, having to be careful about changing things.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: But this feels a little bit like back to the future thing because if Joe didn't exist, you would not have have had I dream of genie.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: Right, you wouldn't have the all-time hits leader.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Yes, you gave somebody the golden glove for fielding.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, Steve, you gotta give me credit.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: This is the first guest I've invited to the show.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: Pretty fucking impressive.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: And it's somebody that that really had an impact on history that really changed the course of baseball events, changed the course of baseball history, and even better than changing it, did it unconsciously.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: He was fairly unconscious when he did it, but he didn't set out that I'm gonna go change baseball history.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: No, he had no idea.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: He changed television history, didn't know he was gonna change.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: Do that, didn't say, Oh, I'm gonna go change television history.
- 23:17SPEAKER_04: No, no, he just went out and saw Barbara Eden.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: Wow, but nice looking at the pretty nice looking lady.
- 23:22SPEAKER_04: So, okay, but change television history.
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: Unbelievable.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: And Joe, later in life, after that experience, I mean, I don't know how you even go forward and live your life after that happened.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: Any any other encounters along the way that you know that you'd like to share with us?
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: Because you you almost seem like a lucky penny, like you're in the right place at the right time.
- 23:42SPEAKER_04: I and that it does seem keep happening to people like that.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: They always they stumble onto things like this.
- 23:48SPEAKER_04: Oh, and they stumble onto it, it it's just it's amazing.
- 23:51SPEAKER_04: So anything else?
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: I worked as a horse trainer at the horse track, and um there was a lot of mob action there, and I I got involved pretty heavily in that.
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: Did you meet my uncle Sal?
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: Wait, but I digress.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: No, no, he was in Chicago, you probably wouldn't have, but yeah, I I just was working at the horse track there, and uh Louisville's close, so I was there at Churchill Downs and uh Yeah, I just I started running a lot of numbers for the mob, started uh started doing that.
- 24:22SPEAKER_04: What what's what's their favorite number?
- 24:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, is is it like seven?
- 24:25SPEAKER_04: Is it like eleven?
- 24:26SPEAKER_04: Is it what what what number do they always talk about running numbers?
- 24:30SPEAKER_04: What what numbers do they like to run?
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: They like the seven and uh they like the 12 and uh they like uh the 13.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: Oh good.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: Lucky 13.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 24:43SPEAKER_04: Lucky 13.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: Well, good.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Well, that's that's when I had to whack a guy.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: Well, I don't care about your private life.
- 24:51SPEAKER_04: It really doesn't matter to me.
- 24:52SPEAKER_04: I don't care, you know.
- 24:53SPEAKER_04: Oh, oh, wait, wait.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: You're talking like mob whack.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Well, I don't know.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Are you talking mobwack?
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: Yes, I'm talking mobwack in this instance.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: So they have a very different private life, Jeff.
- 25:06SPEAKER_04: Ooh, hmm.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: And and what was the were the circumstances to uh whacking?
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: I was it was a guy, right?
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: I had no three of them.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: I I had to whack three.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: You whacked three yeah, it was at the same time or or different time.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: No, one one fell swoop.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: It was uh November of 63, and these guys had all just shot President Kennedy from the grassy knoll.
- 25:30SPEAKER_04: Ah, and that would have been pretty darn inconvenient if they started talking.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: Nobody ever talks about that, and uh you know, and we all know.
- 25:39SPEAKER_04: Until tonight, until tonight on this show, this show is bringing that news out.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: We have the guy who whacked the guys behind the grassy knoll.
- 25:50SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh, Jeff, I know.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: I this could still change his how did you whack them?
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Can you share us a little bit?
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Did you have a history of whacking?
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: Or or was it?
- 26:00SPEAKER_04: Well, Jeff, you're getting into his private life again.
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: There I mean, I mean, as a kid, come on, you know.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean like you know it was the 60s, things were still a little repressed.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: So yeah, you know, but um no, they they they chose me because I was quote unquote clean.
- 26:19SPEAKER_04: Which meant you know, I I could just shoot guys and bathed a lot and they like guys that they like guys that bathed.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: I was a clean guy.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: I went in played clean.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: Clean jacks.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: Well, and you play clean, you work more, so there you there you go.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: So that totally totally works.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: That's the way I do it, yeah, for sure.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: It was a very again.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: How did how did you kill uh each of them?
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: What was the method?
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: They thought they were getting in the car to go for a ride to to the airport, but I had uh a vintage Tommy gun that was given to me from Al Capone that was also used in the uh St.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: Valentine's Day massacre.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: That's why you know the ballistics are just all followed up on it.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: What can I say?
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: So wait, so you got a gun?
- 27:06SPEAKER_04: Al Capone gave you a gun?
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, Al Capone gave me the gun.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: So you met Al Capone.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Sweet guy, bad reputation, sweet guy.
- 27:16SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, yeah, he's unfairly maligned, I think.
- 27:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think so.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: He was actually Alan Capone, you know.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he was known by his friends, you know, but they they shortened it to make it sound like he was more of a bug.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I think it was Alan Capone, good guy.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: I hear.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: Joe, you know more than me.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: I I never met him.
- 27:34SPEAKER_04: He he was nice to his friends and he had good taste in food.
- 27:37SPEAKER_04: You know, I mean, I you know, smoked some decent cigars.
- 27:39SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh, you know, sounds like a sounds like a regular guy, you know.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: Business is business, especially in those days.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Business was business.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, but I was fascinated when you worked at the racetrack.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: Oh I mean, you're a pretty big guy, you know, but did you get a chance to ride some of the horses?
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: I know you trained them, but was there a story with that?
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: Because it seemed to me you told me you shared something about that.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: What they would do instead of putting a little tiny man jockey on a horse to train them, they would put my big dumpy fat butt up on the horse, and it's kind of like in baseball, you know, where you swing two bats, yeah, then you go up and you swing one bat and it's lighter, right?
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: And uh yeah, if that horse can carry you, they could certainly carry those jockeys.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: If a horse can get it all all the way around the track with me hauling, you know, lugging my butt around.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: So I got to ride, uh, let's see, it was a it was a little bit later, maybe uh what was that horse's name?
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: Secret, secret uh secretary.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: Was it secretary?
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: I think secretary.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: I think that was that.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: You know, my my uncle Sal set up his business, but based on his winnings from secretary, or maybe maybe he set up his business and hired a secretary.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: I I get confused, but it's something like it.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: But I digress.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: But but anyway, go ahead, go ahead, Joe.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: So that was, you know, who was the other one, or some like Tacoma Creek, uh oh Seattle, I don't know, something about Washington or whatever.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Did you ride them in any high profile races or did you just work them out?
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: I just worked them out and then they would put a little tiny man up on top.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Sometimes, and I'm I'm just I'm no I'm speaking out of turn here, but honestly, sometimes we would just set a monkey on the horse.
- 29:40SPEAKER_04: For the actual race, you'd have a monkey on the horse.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: He'd wear the little he'd wear the little costume, he'd look like a jockey.
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and did they have the little accordion with them too?
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, the monkey some of some of them.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: The hat, the little hat.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: The little hat.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: Sometimes the accordion, but you know, that would screw up the trifectors, so yeah, they did.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:04SPEAKER_04: Well, and it's hard, it's hard to really hear the subtlety of the accordion over the sound of the racetrack, you know, the hooves hitting.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: That brings us up to that.
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: Was probably sometime in the in the 60s, I guess, would you say late 60s, early 70s?
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, something something around there, something with a zero.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: So what what have you been doing with your with yourself since then?
- 30:26SPEAKER_03: Because you're talking about what, another 50 years or so, you know, since then, have you been keeping busy and you you look in great shape?
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Oh, thanks.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Well, uh, you know, I take care of myself now.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: I'm not as heavy as I was because I got up to right around 625 pounds.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: Wow, you know, that's why Seattle, what was that?
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: Secretary, Secretary Slew or whatever the hell's his name was I kind of followed up with Barbara Eden, ran into her at some cocktail party once and said, Hey, you know, stole my idea, and she was like, You know what it's like when you work with Larry Hagman?
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: And I said, No, I don't, but I do now.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: So right.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's showbiz, right?
- 31:14SPEAKER_04: You get the idea and they make all the money, right?
- 31:17SPEAKER_04: Totally.
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: And that Bill Daly, comic genius.
- 31:21SPEAKER_04: Yes, I was.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: I don't remember what was the name of his character in that show.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Do you remember?
- 31:26SPEAKER_04: Uh you know, I think it was Roger, wasn't it?
- 31:28SPEAKER_04: Roger.
- 31:28SPEAKER_04: I think you are right.
- 31:29SPEAKER_04: It was Roger.
- 31:30SPEAKER_04: I watched so much TV as a kid.
- 31:32SPEAKER_04: You know, my mom and I would sit down when I was little.
- 31:34SPEAKER_04: We'd my mom and I'd sit down in the evenings, we'd have a have a couple vodkas, and we we'd watch uh I dream a genie and various other shows, you know, the Bob Hope specials and all that's all that stuff, you know.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: I mean wasn't he a pilot as well?
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: No, that was Bob Newhart, right?
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: He was, I think, Billy.
- 31:50SPEAKER_04: He was a pilot on, but he was an astronaut, and so he was so he was always in the air.
- 31:54SPEAKER_04: He had always in the air the clouds all the time, you know.
- 31:57SPEAKER_04: Always, yeah.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: So I told Barbara I've got this idea for a show.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: It's about this bigot that lives with his daughter and this liberal people, and um, she said, Look, I can get you there, but that's why I I had to go by my stage name for a few years, and uh, what was the television shows on?
- 32:19SPEAKER_04: Well, what was your stage name?
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: Norman Lear.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: Norman Lear.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: Are we talking about all in the family?
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Because that sounds pretty mafia connected.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: Isn't that kind of the term that they used to use?
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: That is that your idea too.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: It was supposed to be a bigoted uh mafioso, but they said no, America's not ready for that.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let's wait for the Sopranos.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: We'll wait a few.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they toned it down.
- 32:51SPEAKER_04: They toned it down.
- 32:52SPEAKER_04: Wait, 30 more years, the Sopranos.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we'll be good.
- 32:55SPEAKER_04: We'll be good.
- 32:55SPEAKER_04: That'll be fine.
- 32:56SPEAKER_04: If if it was called All in the Family, maybe the mob funded the show, Norman.
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: Can I call you Norman or Joe?
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: Oh, you can call me either one.
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the mob was pretty heavily tied to it.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: That's how we got Sammy Davis Jr.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: to come on because he was all popped up.
- 33:12SPEAKER_04: Oh, he was, yeah, it was wow.
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: So that was so again, I'm looking at the timeline here.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: So now we're up to what?
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: Uh what Steve, would you say that's in the mid-70s?
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: That'd be yeah, the show was early.
- 33:23SPEAKER_04: The show was in like early to mid-70s.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, what a light, what a an enriching, wonderful life you've had, Joe.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: And what are you doing now?
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Well, when I'm not going to my doctor's office in the in the Uber car, um, that's when I'm I'm I'm writing my memoirs.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, you should.
- 33:44SPEAKER_04: You really should.
- 33:45SPEAKER_04: That'd be a fascinating book.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: And um I I am actually uh the stunt man in the iron man movies.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: That's why I spend so much time at the doctor's office.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: So yeah, wow.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: They don't they don't want to get that downy kid.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: What a preppy.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: They don't want to get that little preppy all hurt, so I'm in there, you know, rolling around and at your advanced age, you're a stunt man.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: Unbelievable.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: Once all the parts have been replaced, boys, it gets a lot easier to lay out.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I bet you you feel younger, I bet.
- 34:18SPEAKER_04: You know, it's like, hey, you got a brand new knee, you got a brand new elbow.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: Hey, yeah, it's like parts of me are 80, parts of me are 20, parts of me or five.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: Did you do any stunt work for I Dream of Genie?
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: You know, Barbara was kind of uh hush-hush about getting the idea from somebody else because you know Hagman was mobbed up too.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: So I had to really kind of I believe that.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he was he was a big mob guy.
- 34:42SPEAKER_04: You could see that in when he went into Dallas, you know, in the show Dallas.
- 34:46SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 34:47SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 34:47SPEAKER_04: That was kind of a thinly veiled, that was kind of like the Sopranos with horses.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Sort of autobiographical, but they changed it to Texas instead of New York.
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: Right, yeah.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, because you know, they didn't want to be too literal, but they kind of went there, you know.
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if anyone remembers, Joe, maybe you can back me up on this, but do you remember when Larry Hagman had that liver transplant surgery?
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: And they he jumped to the top of the list.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: And I know people were saying, who did he know?
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: How did that work?
- 35:21SPEAKER_04: You know, Joe, you may he probably pulled a few strings there, you know, like the the old godfather puppet.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I bet he did.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, he went to the top of the list and I found him his donor.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: So you know, was that the donor?
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: Was the donor still alive when you took the liver, or was it had he passed away?
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: He'd had an unfortunate automobile accident.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: Like 30 seconds before his uh liver um, you know, donation.
- 35:49SPEAKER_04: So you kind of you kind of found the donor, but you kind of created the donor too.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: That's the thing when you're in the mafia life, you make your own luck.
- 35:58SPEAKER_04: Wow, that's true.
- 36:00SPEAKER_04: That's just like rugged individualism.
- 36:02SPEAKER_04: That's just bootstrapping, and and that's what makes it great, Jeff.
- 36:06SPEAKER_04: You know, that sort of initiative, that's sort of like making your own luck.
- 36:10SPEAKER_04: Wow, you need a liver, go get one, you know.
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: That's that self-reliance.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then that that led me out there.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: You know, I was uh out in Los Angeles working with the youth, and they had this band and they weren't getting anywhere with it.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: And I said, Look, guys, stop singing the lyrics, just say the lyrics.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: Just say them, don't sing them, because you guys can't say boy.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you that uh uh ice boy.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: I can't remember, he was nice, yeah, nice ice or something like that.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, icy nicey or something, yeah.
- 36:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: He was it was he he did okay, you know.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: He did okay with it.
- 36:52SPEAKER_04: So you created rap.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: I don't like to take all the credit for it, but yes, I did.
- 36:58SPEAKER_04: Wow, Jeff, we've got everything from Major League Baseball to the Kennedy assassination to television success to rap.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: It's crazy, and when I say crazy, Steve, like I'm kind of uh thinking it's crazy, but believable.
- 37:16SPEAKER_04: It's incredible that one man could have done all this in one short lifetime.
- 37:22SPEAKER_04: Well, not that short, but one lifetime could have done all this.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: I was taking you to the doctor.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: You are you okay?
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Are you feeling good?
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: He said I'm a perfectly healthy, perfectly healthy for a 95-year-old dead man.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: He's a he's a hell of a card.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: Best looking dead man he's ever seen.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he said, you know, what the hell?
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: You live fast, you die pretty like me, you know.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: And you've just done some amazing things.
- 37:50SPEAKER_04: I mean, do you have I mean what what more could you do?
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, do you have other goals, other things you'd like to do with the remaining years you've got?
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: I I've been working on with these guys, they have this thing, you know, because I'm trying to pass my knowledge on to future generations now.
- 38:07SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, you should in that book.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: That book's gonna be great.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so they've got the shatopi or something like that.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know, this application that we built so that uh, you know, my knowledge can go into other people's work.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: That's oh that is wow, chat gibiti.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 38:28SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh, Jeff.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: Jeff, this guy's on the cutting edge of every trend, every trend for the last 70 years.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: Except one.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: I completely missed Bell Bottoms.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: Oh kick myself for that.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: Wow, you know, wow, it was a short trend, but if you were there in the early 70s, you could have cleaned up.
- 38:48unknown: Could have.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: If they do a movie on you, I'm thinking Tom Hanks, you know.
- 38:53SPEAKER_04: I think so, yes, because he could do the young version and the age version, and uh he could he could handle that uh process.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I'll ask him, you know, we play cards on Fridays, so I'll I'll ask him.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: Wow, plays cards with Tom Hanks.
- 39:09SPEAKER_04: Does he cheat?
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: Like a bitch.
- 39:13SPEAKER_04: You know, I somehow knew that.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: I knew it.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: I somehow knew that.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: Well, he ought to be careful because I know you got some connections.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: You know, if you catch him cheating, he he may not be available for the next movie, if you know what I mean.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, Barack is in the game too, so he gotta check your weapons.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: So he's oh wow.
- 39:33SPEAKER_04: So he's playing with Barack and and uh Tom.
- 39:38SPEAKER_04: Tom.
- 39:38SPEAKER_04: Here you go.
- 39:39SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 39:40SPEAKER_04: I knew it was an easy little name, but I just couldn't.
- 39:42SPEAKER_04: I wish I had your life.
- 39:43SPEAKER_04: And Jeff, when that when that book comes out, you really could have his life.
- 39:46SPEAKER_04: You could read all about the details.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: I hope you're really filling in a lot of the details.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: We're just doing like a a 50,000 foot view here tonight.
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: I hope you're really giving all the the real, the juicy details in the book.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: Joe, you still there?
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: Well oh god, I'm nodded off.
- 40:05SPEAKER_04: Oh for a second, it's a little warm here in the studio.
- 40:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 40:11SPEAKER_04: Oh sorry about that.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: You know, you get you get a man my age with so many uh you know, new parts in him and get him nice and warm, and uh there you go.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: It's like give me a cup of hot tea and I'm out for the night.
- 40:23SPEAKER_04: Steve, did we have a sponsor?
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: You know, we we did, Jeff, but I think given the fascinating guests we've got tonight and the fact that we gave up last week to to our sponsors, let's just let it ride.
- 40:35SPEAKER_04: We'll we'll carry that sponsor to the next show.
- 40:38SPEAKER_04: It'll be fun.
- 40:38SPEAKER_04: It'll be fine.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: I'll explain it to him, it'll be good.
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: Trust me, boys, there'll be money in your account.
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: Don't worry about it, don't worry about it.
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: There'll be some money in your account.
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Jeff's just got some connections.
- 40:48SPEAKER_04: He could probably get us some money, Jeff.
- 40:51unknown: Wow.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: Well, he gave me the those quarters after the Uber ride.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: Not a lot of people do that, you know, and there were there was a whole handful of them, and uh, I really appreciated that.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: I you know, nobody's given me quarters since my wife used to be.
- 41:06SPEAKER_04: She gave you quarters because she wanted you to go to the laundromat and laundry.
- 41:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's a roll of quarters.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: Always came home from work with a bunch of quarters, yeah.
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: You know, dollar bills rolled up.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I had a wife like that too, always came home from work with quarters.
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: I had a wife who came home with the dollar bills rolled up, and they were always like there was like stuff on them, and it's just uh yeah, but I used to be annoyed because my the quarters were always sticky.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: You know, you hate that.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: But Joe's were not, they were in great shape.
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: So they're honest quarters.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: They were real, yeah, they were good quarters.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: Thanks, Joe.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: I I know how to launder money.
- 41:42SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, to wash it.
- 41:44SPEAKER_04: His money is completely clean, yes.
- 41:46SPEAKER_04: Uh-huh.
- 41:47SPEAKER_04: Cleaned and pressed, one could even say.
- 41:49SPEAKER_04: They're pressed into that little role, you know.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: Well, this has been fascinating.
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: I'm so glad you came on and told your story.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: I I uh I remember calling Steve after I dropped you off and said, This guy's fascinating, you know.
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, Forrest Gump is boring compared to Joe from the South Side.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks.
- 42:09SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 42:09SPEAKER_04: Played the role, you know.
- 42:11SPEAKER_04: So he could play, he'd play the same role except better, except bigger, except more true.
- 42:16SPEAKER_04: This is like this is like a real life forest gump.
- 42:19SPEAKER_04: Wow, Jeff.
- 42:20SPEAKER_04: They are gonna kick us out of eccentric Lady Land Studios here in a minute.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: And you know, and boy, speaking of kick, I really want to kick that engineer, but I digress.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: But but Joe, well, we got somebody who can help us with that, Steve.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, oh, oh, I think they need your help, Joe.
- 42:36SPEAKER_04: Got a guy over there that might need some talking to, if you know what I mean.
- 42:39SPEAKER_04: We may call you soon there, Joe.
- 42:41SPEAKER_02: All right, you just don't wait for a wedding or anything, just ask, ask away anyway.
- 42:46SPEAKER_04: Cool, cool.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: Okay, well, Joe, thanks so much for coming on.
- 42:50SPEAKER_04: And Jeff, this was just fascinating.
- 42:52SPEAKER_04: You really hit the gold mine with your first guest.
- 42:55SPEAKER_04: That is exhausted.
- 42:57SPEAKER_04: Completely exhausted.
- 42:58SPEAKER_04: So you may have to take the reins from here.
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: Jeff, I I I gotta ask you, you think you you think any of that's true?
- 43:05SPEAKER_04: No, I don't think any of it's true.
- 43:07SPEAKER_04: Do you?
- 43:08SPEAKER_04: No, probably not, but gosh, what what a story.
- 43:12SPEAKER_04: It's unbelievable.
- 43:13SPEAKER_04: I mean, it really almost doesn't matter if it's true because it's such a great story.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: I don't care.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: I mean and Steve, come on, be honest.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: Most stories aren't true.
- 43:21SPEAKER_04: No, exactly, exactly.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: And look, we do we do a comedy podcast.
- 43:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, people aren't expecting you know the news, a documentary.
- 43:29SPEAKER_04: No, that's no, no, that's not this.
- 43:32SPEAKER_04: That's not what we do.
- 43:33SPEAKER_03: So yeah, and and you know, the last thing I want is for Tom Hanks to be calling us up bitching about being uh quoted or being told that he was gonna be in some movie, so yeah, so you know that just want to confirm that we you know right, we we don't think this is true, but it could be true, but I'm not saying it's not.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, all that stuff lines up.
- 43:55SPEAKER_04: Those were San Francisco Giants, those were Cincinnati Reds, those were TV shows.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Bill Daly is funny.
- 44:02SPEAKER_04: Bill Daly is funny, absolutely.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: So anyway, thanks again, Joe and Jeff.
- 44:07SPEAKER_04: I I will see you on our next show.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: Sounds great.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: Thanks, Joe.
