- 0:45Speaker 1: points toward a real crime, and now our story begins.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Suspense Radios outstanding Theater of Frills brings you an hour
- 1:13Speaker 2: a full sixty minutes of suspense Tonight, starring Eddie Bracken
- 1:19Speaker 2: and featuring William Conrad in Nightmare, based on the short
- 1:23Speaker 2: story by William Irish, directed by Anton Amrida and produced
- 1:27Speaker 2: by Robert Montgomery.
- 1:34Speaker 3: This is Robert Montgomery good Night.
- 1:38Speaker 4: You know, when you stop to think about it, one
- 1:40Speaker 4: of the nicest things we say to one another is
- 1:42Speaker 4: good night. A lot of thoughts are implied in those
- 1:46Speaker 4: two words, and all of them are good. Actually, what
- 1:48Speaker 4: we're saying is, have a good night. May it bring
- 1:51Speaker 4: you rest, May you sleep well, And if your sleep
- 1:54Speaker 4: is invaded by dreams, may they be pleasant dreams. All good,
- 1:59Speaker 4: well and thoughts bound up neatly into two brief words.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Good night and sleep itself is a condition that most
- 2:06Speaker 4: of us welcome, quite apart from the biological need it serves.
- 2:10Speaker 4: We're grateful for the momentary escape, for being removed from reality,
- 2:15Speaker 4: for the quiet, peaceful hours on the fringe of consciousness,
- 2:19Speaker 4: and so most of us, most of the time anticipate
- 2:22Speaker 4: the night and sleep. Families and good friends regularly surrender
- 2:26Speaker 4: each other to the gentle care of the.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Night and call it a good thing. But in the
- 2:31Speaker 3: blackest recesses.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Of night, there can be terror, And the very night
- 2:36Speaker 4: that offers you sleep may also offer the torment of
- 2:39Speaker 4: dark dreams, vivid, terrible, half real dreams that grip you,
- 2:44Speaker 4: plague you with horror through the night, and are reluctant
- 2:47Speaker 4: to release you to the morning. Fear panic, terror of
- 2:52Speaker 4: such stuff are nightmares made nightmares like the one we
- 2:56Speaker 4: bring you to night and now with Nightmare, one of the.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Best known and most imaginative short.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Stories of Cornell Woolrich, writing as William Irish and with
- 3:05Speaker 4: our star Eddie Bracken, We again hope to keep you
- 3:08Speaker 4: in suspens.
- 3:20Speaker 5: First, all I could see was this beautiful face, this
- 3:25Speaker 5: beautiful girl's face, like a white luminous mask, swimming detachedly
- 3:31Speaker 5: against unfolding darkness.
- 3:33Speaker 6: There was no danger yet, but I wanted to get
- 3:37Speaker 6: out of wherever this was. There was eight doors in
- 3:41Speaker 6: the room, with no free wall space between.
- 3:44Speaker 5: I tried one, another, a third. They were the wrong ones.
- 3:50Speaker 5: I couldn't get out.
- 3:56Speaker 6: The flickering white mask began to change its expression.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Slowly it became evil, vindictive. It spoke, It snarld.
- 4:06Speaker 7: There he is right behind you get.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Him then if he was just a black huddle, a dark,
- 4:17Speaker 6: lumpy mass. It slowly uncoiled until it loomed before me, upright.
- 4:23Speaker 6: It came toward me, toward me, toward me, with cataleptic slewness.
- 4:31Speaker 7: I wanted to.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Turn and run.
- 4:32Speaker 6: In the minute, the half minute, that's all I was
- 4:34Speaker 6: left now, But I couldn't move.
- 4:37Speaker 5: I couldn't left the foot.
- 4:40Speaker 6: I just waved back and forth, as if my shoes
- 4:43Speaker 6: were nailed to the floor. He came on, his outline,
- 4:51Speaker 6: still indistinct, like a lumpy clay image. I could see
- 4:55Speaker 6: the arms come up from the sides and couldn't avoid them.
- 4:58Speaker 6: They were like lobster claws. I could feel its breath
- 5:02Speaker 6: on my face. I could feel the pressure of his
- 5:06Speaker 6: hands on the side of my neck rather than in front,
- 5:09Speaker 6: as if trying to break it rather than strangle me.
- 5:12Speaker 5: And the thongs were digging into the.
- 5:15Speaker 6: Straining cord right under my ears, pressing into the tender
- 5:21Speaker 6: black flesh right beside the jabboks.
- 5:26Speaker 5: I pulled the merciless hands and cried one off.
- 5:29Speaker 6: At last, but it wrenched free in my restraint, trailing
- 5:33Speaker 6: a nail scratch across my wrist, and climbed itself back
- 5:38Speaker 6: where it had finn. I beat it his hot body
- 5:43Speaker 6: and then pulled it and grabbed at it with the
- 5:46Speaker 6: instinctive clutch of.
- 5:47Speaker 8: A drowning man.
- 5:49Speaker 6: A button came off in my hand and I hung
- 5:52Speaker 6: onto it. I don't know why I just hung onto it.
- 5:59Speaker 6: Is he dead? No?
- 6:00Speaker 7: Not?
- 6:01Speaker 6: You finished this?
- 6:01Speaker 9: Hurry hand me the drill.
- 6:05Speaker 6: I put out my hands, passed and to protect myself,
- 6:10Speaker 6: and something was put into one of them.
- 6:13Speaker 10: She put it into my hand.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Instead of his.
- 6:18Speaker 7: I fixed my hand on a tight lifted my arm, and.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Drove it into him from the.
- 6:24Speaker 7: Bottom his bed.
- 6:29Speaker 6: Body fell heavily and scrawled across me.
- 6:32Speaker 5: It took almost a minute for me to push it away.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Is it done?
- 6:37Speaker 7: Did it kill him?
- 6:39Speaker 6: When I stood up, she saw me, and she disappeared,
- 6:44Speaker 6: as though swallowed by a shrunk.
- 6:47Speaker 11: I hurried.
- 6:48Speaker 6: I heard a door closed and turned to see which
- 6:50Speaker 6: one she used to get out, that I might remember
- 6:53Speaker 6: and find my way out.
- 6:54Speaker 5: But I was too late. When I turned, she was gone,
- 6:58Speaker 5: and all the doors looked like again. I was alone
- 7:02Speaker 5: with a dead body.
- 7:04Speaker 6: The core of my fear lay sprawled on the floor.
- 7:08Speaker 5: I had to hide it, had to shut it away.
- 7:11Speaker 5: I tried the doors one by one till one of
- 7:14Speaker 5: them opened.
- 7:15Speaker 6: It was a closet, A shallow closet, but enough to
- 7:19Speaker 6: hold the body. I cracked it across the floor, and
- 7:26Speaker 6: I shut the door of the closet, pressing it tight
- 7:28Speaker 6: in to keep the terror.
- 7:29Speaker 5: That the body still held away from me. Below the knob,
- 7:33Speaker 5: I found.
- 7:33Speaker 6: A key, a strange key shaped like a three leaf clover.
- 7:39Speaker 5: I turned it, heard the lock click into place.
- 7:42Speaker 6: Then put the key into my pocket, but I couldn't
- 7:46Speaker 6: keep my eyes away from the knob.
- 7:47Speaker 5: It was turning slowly to the right and into the left,
- 7:52Speaker 5: and as it turned.
- 7:53Speaker 9: It made a.
- 7:54Speaker 6: Ringing noise, A ringing noise, A ringnob. The door, my phone,
- 8:09Speaker 6: the phone, Hello, eight o'clock, fans, Did I wake you?
- 8:13Speaker 6: Who is this?
- 8:14Speaker 12: It's little your sister.
- 8:16Speaker 6: I want you to come up for dinner and I, oh, well, look,
- 8:19Speaker 6: I'll phone you later when I'm awake.
- 8:21Speaker 13: Okay, oh sure, bye bye.
- 8:26Speaker 7: It was a dream.
- 8:28Speaker 6: It was all a dream. Near doors, dead bodies, beautiful women.
- 8:42Speaker 6: How Freudian can you get? Must have been that salami
- 8:45Speaker 6: had last night. Never reached salami before going to bed.
- 8:48Speaker 6: Eleventh commandment fourteen minutes af day. That means I still
- 8:55Speaker 6: have time to borrow. I stood staring stupidly at my wrist.
- 9:00Speaker 6: I was a deep scratch on my wrist. For a minute,
- 9:02Speaker 6: I was startled. Then I realized what must have happened.
- 9:05Speaker 6: I scratched myself in my sleep, and the details ended
- 9:08Speaker 6: into my dream. Yeah, that's what must have happened. I
- 9:11Speaker 6: dropped my watch and it was broken, but it didn't matter.
- 9:13Speaker 6: It was a cheap one. I continued dressing. I chose
- 9:17Speaker 6: a blue tie and threw up the collar and drew
- 9:19Speaker 6: the tie.
- 9:20Speaker 13: Lane through and folded it again.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Out of my mind was getting ready to get frightened,
- 9:26Speaker 6: but I held on to it steady, like I held
- 9:28Speaker 6: the collar. In the mirror. I could see them, the
- 9:31Speaker 6: bruises on my throat, brownish purple marks which hadn't been
- 9:35Speaker 6: there when I went to bed the night before. It
- 9:38Speaker 6: took me a moment to realize, to try to reason
- 9:41Speaker 6: it out, I must have done this to myself too,
- 9:44Speaker 6: crossing my arms over my chest and attempting to strangle
- 9:47Speaker 6: myself in my sleep. It didn't make much sense, but
- 9:50Speaker 6: it was the best I could do. I decided not
- 9:53Speaker 6: to think anything more about it and continued dressing. When
- 9:58Speaker 6: I had my jacket on, put my hand in my
- 10:01Speaker 6: change pocket and took what was in it to check
- 10:04Speaker 6: cop bear and lunch money. A button mixed in with
- 10:10Speaker 6: a change, A button that didn't belong to any suitor
- 10:14Speaker 6: coat I owned. I closed my hand over it, and
- 10:18Speaker 6: I it had the feel, the shape. There was no
- 10:23Speaker 6: doubt about it in my mind. It was the button
- 10:27Speaker 6: from the dream. I rushed to the closet, checked every
- 10:33Speaker 6: last thing I had. The button matched nothing. It wasn't
- 10:36Speaker 6: from anything of mine. It didn't belong anyway. I couldn't
- 10:40Speaker 6: kid myself anymore. People don't find buttons and dreams. I
- 10:47Speaker 6: decided I needed a cup of coffee. I was getting
- 10:49Speaker 6: the jittis. I slipped into my top coat and opened
- 10:54Speaker 6: the door. Then before I shut it, I checked to
- 10:57Speaker 6: make sure I had my key. The key I took
- 11:02Speaker 6: out of my pocket wasn't my key. It was shaped
- 11:06Speaker 6: like a three leafed clover.
- 11:11Speaker 7: My knees of a week.
- 11:13Speaker 6: My stomach was quivering, but I couldn't go back into
- 11:17Speaker 6: the room. I had to see people here, cars in
- 11:21Speaker 6: the streets, but it didn't help. All was real, nothing
- 11:28Speaker 6: was wrong. It was me, something in me. I ducked
- 11:31Speaker 6: into a drug store, but I couldn't eat. Instead, I
- 11:34Speaker 6: went to the phone booth and called my.
- 11:36Speaker 13: Sister Lil.
- 11:42Speaker 6: Hello, Hello, Hello, Lil Vince. Yes, is Cliff at home?
- 11:48Speaker 12: No, we went down to headquarters an hour ago.
- 11:50Speaker 6: He expecting him back.
- 11:51Speaker 12: I am if he doesn't run off of the blonde.
- 11:53Speaker 6: Then he won't be back until tonight.
- 11:55Speaker 12: Well you're a detective too, how'd you figure out?
- 11:58Speaker 11: Sorry?
- 11:58Speaker 6: I bothered Jula, I just wanted to talk to Cliff.
- 12:01Speaker 12: What about dinner? You will be able to Cliff there?
- 12:04Speaker 6: Dinner? No, thanks, I don't think so. Goodbye. I called
- 12:13Speaker 6: the store and told them I was sick. Then I
- 12:16Speaker 6: walked all day in the sunshine. Wherever the sun was brightest,
- 12:19Speaker 6: I saw it and stayed in that place. And when
- 12:22Speaker 6: it moved, I moved with it. I couldn't get it
- 12:26Speaker 6: bright enough or strong enough, yet it didn't seem to
- 12:29Speaker 6: warm me. At about six o'clock, I found myself in
- 12:32Speaker 6: front of Cliff's house. The lights around inside, and I
- 12:34Speaker 6: could see Cliff. No, it was lil moving around setting
- 12:39Speaker 6: the table, preparing dinner. That meant Cliff wasn't home yet.
- 12:42Speaker 6: I waited outside.
- 12:46Speaker 7: Oh that's a mootic. Are you afraid to ring the bell?
- 12:49Speaker 6: Oh? Cliff didn't hear you coming?
- 12:51Speaker 7: Well? Are we going in? Are we going to stay
- 12:52Speaker 7: out here?
- 12:53Speaker 6: I'm hungry, Cliff, I got to talk to you. Something
- 12:56Speaker 6: crazy happened to me.
- 12:57Speaker 7: Can I wait an hour? I've had a long, hard day.
- 13:01Speaker 10: Yeah, honey, Well, I thought I heard you talking to
- 13:03Speaker 10: someone with you now, Vince? Oh, I said you weren't
- 13:07Speaker 10: coming Vince? Well, oh, never mind, the chickens will do
- 13:10Speaker 10: for three? Come on in.
- 13:16Speaker 6: Oh that's lil, and there's nothing you can do about it.
- 13:19Speaker 6: I hadn't eaten all day, and I hardly touched the
- 13:21Speaker 6: food she served. I couldn't wait to get Cliff alone
- 13:24Speaker 6: and tell them what happened.
- 13:26Speaker 13: Detective should be able to help me.
- 13:29Speaker 10: I just finished up the dishes and then i'll be back.
- 13:34Speaker 6: Get your hat, Cliff, I've got to talk to you alone.
- 13:38Speaker 14: Sure, kid, Well, Vince and I are going to stretch
- 13:42Speaker 14: our legs.
- 13:43Speaker 7: Be back in a couple of.
- 13:43Speaker 15: Minutes, now, Cliff, only beer, okay, okay.
- 14:00Speaker 6: And then there was the button, the same shape and
- 14:03Speaker 6: size and everything. It was in my trouser pocket with
- 14:06Speaker 6: my change. It's on the dresser back in my own room.
- 14:09Speaker 6: Now if you want to come over, you can see
- 14:10Speaker 6: it for yourself.
- 14:12Speaker 11: And last of all, the key turned up on me,
- 14:14Speaker 11: next to my own keys, in the pocket where I
- 14:17Speaker 11: always keep it here.
- 14:20Speaker 7: This is the key.
- 14:21Speaker 6: Yes, that's the way it looked when I saw it
- 14:23Speaker 6: when I was asleep. The same shape, the same color,
- 14:26Speaker 6: the same design. It even weighed the same.
- 14:28Speaker 14: Hey, you're all in pieces, aren't you. I don't take
- 14:33Speaker 14: it that way, kid, don't let to get you, Cliff.
- 14:37Speaker 6: You've got to help me. I'm walking on a high
- 14:40Speaker 6: wire and.
- 14:41Speaker 14: There's no net. Where'd you get this key from, Vince?
- 14:44Speaker 14: I mean, where did you first get it from? Before
- 14:45Speaker 14: you dreamed about it?
- 14:46Speaker 6: But you don't understand. That's what I've been trying to
- 14:49Speaker 6: tell you. I didn't have it before I dreamed about it.
- 14:51Speaker 6: I never saw it before. Then then I wake up
- 14:54Speaker 6: and it turns real.
- 14:56Speaker 14: And that goes for the button too, the button two. Hell,
- 15:00Speaker 14: you not only have no nut, you don't even have
- 15:03Speaker 14: a wire. What really got you going? Are you afraid
- 15:06Speaker 14: the dream really happened?
- 15:08Speaker 7: Is that it?
- 15:08Speaker 6: Don't you understand? There's a door somewhere in this city
- 15:11Speaker 6: right at this very minute that this key belongs to.
- 15:14Speaker 6: There's a man propped up dead behind it. I don't
- 15:18Speaker 6: know where, I don't know where, know who he is.
- 15:24Speaker 13: How why it happened?
- 15:27Speaker 6: Only that I I must have been there. I must
- 15:30Speaker 6: have done it.
- 15:31Speaker 11: Though, Oh why would it come to my mind like
- 15:33Speaker 11: that in my sleep?
- 15:34Speaker 7: Why you're in a bad way? Can say? How a
- 15:39Speaker 7: little drinker a little and no little?
- 15:41Speaker 6: A waiter only coffee?
- 15:44Speaker 14: Oh yes, sir, a waiter is two coffee too, coffees.
- 15:49Speaker 7: Yes.
- 15:50Speaker 6: When the coffee came, Cliff started questioning me.
- 15:54Speaker 7: And the man, the fellow, whoever he was.
- 15:56Speaker 6: No, I couldn't seem to see his face through the
- 15:59Speaker 6: whole thing. I only saw it at the very end,
- 16:01Speaker 6: after it was already too late, And then when the
- 16:03Speaker 6: door started to open again after I locked them in,
- 16:07Speaker 6: and it seemed as though I was gonna find out
- 16:09Speaker 6: something horrible about him.
- 16:11Speaker 13: I guess, but I woke up before there was time.
- 16:16Speaker 14: And last of all, the place you say, nothing but
- 16:19Speaker 14: doors all around you.
- 16:21Speaker 7: Have you been in a place like that lately?
- 16:23Speaker 14: I've ever seen one in a magazine illustration and the
- 16:26Speaker 14: story you've read in a movie. No, no, Well, let's
- 16:30Speaker 14: get away from the dream for a minute. Let's leave
- 16:32Speaker 14: it alone. Starting to get me too. Now, what did
- 16:36Speaker 14: you do last night before this whole thing came up?
- 16:38Speaker 6: Nothing? Just what I do every night. I left the
- 16:40Speaker 6: store at the usual time, had my meal at the
- 16:42Speaker 6: usual Oh.
- 16:43Speaker 7: Yeah, sure, it wasn't something you ate.
- 16:44Speaker 6: No food is responsible for that key. He can't create
- 16:48Speaker 6: a thing like that from a dream, and I didn't
- 16:51Speaker 6: have it when I went to bed last night. Cliff
- 16:59Speaker 6: didn't lose his right away. He's a good detective and
- 17:03Speaker 6: a good guy.
- 17:04Speaker 14: Listen, Vince, there's no halfway business about these things. It's
- 17:08Speaker 14: either one thing or the other. Either you dream a
- 17:10Speaker 14: thing or you don't dream it.
- 17:11Speaker 7: It really happens.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Now.
- 17:12Speaker 7: You're twenty six years old. You're not a kid.
- 17:15Speaker 14: Now, don't worry. You'd know it and you'd remember it
- 17:17Speaker 14: plenty plain afterwards. If you ever came to grips with
- 17:19Speaker 14: a guy and he had your butther throat like in
- 17:21Speaker 14: this dream, and you ram something in his back. I
- 17:24Speaker 14: don't take any stock in this stuff about people walking
- 17:26Speaker 14: in this sleet and doing things without knowing it. They
- 17:29Speaker 14: can walk a little ways from the bed maybe, but
- 17:31Speaker 14: the minute anybody touches him or does anything to stop him,
- 17:33Speaker 14: they wake right up. They can't be manhandled, and go
- 17:36Speaker 14: right on sleeping through it.
- 17:38Speaker 6: I never walked in my sleeve. You can ask Lil
- 17:40Speaker 6: if you think.
- 17:41Speaker 14: Now they have any recollection at all, no matter how
- 17:44Speaker 14: faint of being out of your room last night, of
- 17:46Speaker 14: grappling with a guy or ramming something into him.
- 17:48Speaker 6: No, all I have is a perfectly clear recollection of
- 17:52Speaker 6: going to bed dreaming that I did all these things,
- 17:56Speaker 6: and then waking up again.
- 17:59Speaker 14: Okay, And that's all there is to it. And it
- 18:01Speaker 14: didn't happen you either, dream of me, you do them.
- 18:04Speaker 7: There's no two ways about it.
- 18:06Speaker 6: Don't say anything a little about it, will you, Cliff.
- 18:09Speaker 14: I should say not. I wanted to take you for
- 18:12Speaker 14: bugs here. You'll get over it.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Nce first, I'll get to the bottom of it, and
- 18:17Speaker 6: then I'll get over it.
- 18:19Speaker 13: Cliff, are you going to help me?
- 18:22Speaker 7: What do you want me to do?
- 18:24Speaker 6: Well, you're a detective. You got the key and the
- 18:26Speaker 6: buttons are in my room. You must have often had
- 18:29Speaker 6: less to work with. Find out where they came from.
- 18:32Speaker 6: Find out what they're doing on me.
- 18:33Speaker 14: Now listen, cut that stuff out of you here. I
- 18:35Speaker 14: don't want to hear any more about the key. I
- 18:36Speaker 14: got it and I'm keeping it, and you're not going
- 18:37Speaker 14: to see it again. And if you hop on this
- 18:39Speaker 14: spooky stuff anymore, I'll help you. All right right into
- 18:42Speaker 14: the nearest sanitarium.
- 18:50Speaker 6: I was on my own, just like before I had
- 18:52Speaker 6: been there, me and my shadows. Next day I phoned
- 18:56Speaker 6: the store and told them I still wasn't feeling when
- 18:59Speaker 6: then well, I stopped in at a newspaper advertising bureau
- 19:03Speaker 6: and composed an ad classified. Yes, real estate.
- 19:06Speaker 16: This is the entire copy. Uh huh, check it with
- 19:08Speaker 16: me see if it's correct. Please wanted. I am interested
- 19:11Speaker 16: in inspecting with a view toward leasing or buying a
- 19:14Speaker 16: house with an octagonal mirror paneled room or alcove, period, location, size,
- 19:19Speaker 16: and all other details of secondary importance, provided it has
- 19:23Speaker 16: this one essential feature desired for reasons of a sentimental nature.
- 19:27Speaker 16: Period communicate boxel world express giving exact details.
- 19:31Speaker 17: Period.
- 19:32Speaker 16: Is that everything you want to say?
- 19:33Speaker 6: Sir? Yes, I believe. So.
- 19:35Speaker 17: How long you wanted to run?
- 19:36Speaker 6: A week? Should hear something in that time?
- 19:37Speaker 13: Shouldn't?
- 19:38Speaker 1: I should?
- 19:39Speaker 16: Lady wants advertised for an alligator that answered to the
- 19:41Speaker 16: name Alulu, and she got it in four days.
- 19:49Speaker 6: I guess alligators answering to the name of Lulu. I'm
- 19:52Speaker 6: more plentiful in houses with octagonal mirrored paneled rooms. I
- 19:57Speaker 6: got some answers, but none of them are right. None
- 20:00Speaker 6: of the houses fit the scene of the dream. Next day, Sunday,
- 20:03Speaker 6: I was in my room, hid, hello, Cliff, what are
- 20:12Speaker 6: you dressed for?
- 20:12Speaker 5: Well?
- 20:13Speaker 14: Matter of fact, lil and I are going to take
- 20:15Speaker 14: her right out in the country for the day. And
- 20:16Speaker 14: she packed a lunch for three cold beer, hammetless.
- 20:19Speaker 6: And I'm all right. I don't need fresh air joints
- 20:21Speaker 6: to get rid of the devils. If that's the strategy,
- 20:24Speaker 6: you find, no kid.
- 20:25Speaker 14: You see, I got this new secondhand Chevy in exchange
- 20:28Speaker 14: to my old secondhand Chevy, and I thought that maybe
- 20:30Speaker 14: you'd like.
- 20:36Speaker 6: In the end, I decided to go with them on
- 20:38Speaker 6: their picnic. Cliff was right. There was no point sitting
- 20:40Speaker 6: around brooding and waiting for something to happen. I might
- 20:44Speaker 6: as well forget it for a few hours if I could.
- 20:51Speaker 6: After our picnic lunch, I was almost beginning to relax.
- 20:55Speaker 10: Have another sandwich, Cliff, Oh why later?
- 21:01Speaker 7: You have just tucked me into it. They just toss
- 21:04Speaker 7: it over.
- 21:04Speaker 17: How about you, Vince?
- 21:05Speaker 6: If I had another sandwich, leyl, I'd never be able
- 21:08Speaker 6: to move another muscle. Where are we anyhow?
- 21:12Speaker 17: I don't know Hash the pilot he.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Got us here, so help me.
- 21:15Speaker 7: I was flying blind.
- 21:17Speaker 6: Well, here's a weather report. Just came in friends, rain
- 21:20Speaker 6: and soon.
- 21:22Speaker 17: How soon do you think, Vince?
- 21:24Speaker 7: Right?
- 21:24Speaker 6: Now, come on, get the stuff into the car.
- 21:28Speaker 7: Then you take the blanket.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I got the bath.
- 21:30Speaker 17: Hurry up, we'll float back in town quick.
- 21:44Speaker 10: Dear, I hate to be a past but the lightning
- 21:47Speaker 10: frightens me. If you can't find your way back to
- 21:50Speaker 10: the main road, can't you turn in somewhere and stop
- 21:52Speaker 10: a while.
- 21:53Speaker 7: I'm sorry, little, it's hard to see through the rain.
- 21:55Speaker 17: Well, if you spot a house or a barn, please turn.
- 21:57Speaker 17: And I'm scared, of course.
- 22:01Speaker 14: Hey, if only I had some idea where we are.
- 22:03Speaker 14: I can't see ten feet ahead and this stuff.
- 22:06Speaker 6: There's a cutoff a little ways ahead around the next turn.
- 22:09Speaker 6: If you take it, it'll lead us to a house
- 22:11Speaker 6: with a big wide porch. We can get in under there.
- 22:14Speaker 7: How did you know that?
- 22:15Speaker 17: Were you ever up around here these talks before?
- 22:18Speaker 7: No?
- 22:18Speaker 17: Well then how'd you?
- 22:20Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 22:20Speaker 14: Well, let's concentrate on driving instead of conversation.
- 22:24Speaker 7: Have you seen any road signs?
- 22:26Speaker 17: No, Cliff, not a thing.
- 22:27Speaker 10: Eh.
- 22:27Speaker 14: Are you getting us more tangled up than we already were?
- 22:30Speaker 7: Then?
- 22:31Speaker 6: No, don't stop. Keep going. He'll come to it. Two
- 22:34Speaker 6: big stone landings. Turn the car left between them. I
- 22:39Speaker 6: don't know how I knew that myself.
- 22:42Speaker 18: Oh, there they are there they are. Well, turncliff, like
- 22:45Speaker 18: he told you. Oh look, look through the trees, there's
- 22:51Speaker 18: a house back there. Oh, Vince was right. Oh, well,
- 22:54Speaker 18: I'd be glad to get out of this storm. I'll
- 22:56Speaker 18: stop as close to the entrance as possible there.
- 22:58Speaker 19: All right, Holley, Well it's dry here, but I wish
- 23:13Speaker 19: you could get in and away from that lightning.
- 23:15Speaker 17: I'll try the doorbell.
- 23:16Speaker 14: Cliff okay, Oh, no, one seems to answer.
- 23:26Speaker 6: There's a key under the window box with the geranium.
- 23:29Speaker 10: Oh he's kidding, but look anyway, Cliff, okay, No, isn't.
- 23:34Speaker 18: It the swier.
- 23:36Speaker 17: Wow, I'd better put on his lights so we can
- 23:46Speaker 17: see where we're going.
- 23:47Speaker 6: Not that switch. That's the one to the porch. The
- 23:50Speaker 6: one that controls the hole is on the other side.
- 23:54Speaker 7: He's right, what is this a rip?
- 23:57Speaker 17: How do you know so much about this place? Anyway?
- 23:59Speaker 7: Then just a lucky guess on his punt?
- 24:02Speaker 20: Good after no, Cliff, anybody hope, don't do that.
- 24:06Speaker 17: He's come.
- 24:07Speaker 9: He's shaking.
- 24:08Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 6: I was shaking, you see, and I was closed. I
- 24:13Speaker 6: was dripping with perspiration. I didn't what made me say
- 24:17Speaker 6: those things about the road and the key and the
- 24:18Speaker 6: light switches, but they came out as though I had
- 24:20Speaker 6: been here before.
- 24:22Speaker 7: I was scared.
- 24:24Speaker 17: Wait for the summer. I guess, but it's funny they'd
- 24:26Speaker 17: leave it on lock like that electricity still unconnected. Oh here,
- 24:31Speaker 17: being a detective comes in Handicliff. We shouldn't get in
- 24:34Speaker 17: trouble walking in like this. As long as we're here.
- 24:38Speaker 10: I don't think anybody would mind if he made some coffee.
- 24:41Speaker 17: I'd love some, how about you, Cliff?
- 24:43Speaker 7: Sure, go ahead.
- 24:45Speaker 6: I couldn't look at Cliff, though I felt his eyes
- 24:48Speaker 6: burning a hole in the back of my neck. Little
- 24:51Speaker 6: went into the kitchen and I began to wander around nervously.
- 24:56Speaker 6: I found a bedroom and then a two entrance bath.
- 25:00Speaker 6: I went out by the second entrance, and I was
- 25:02Speaker 6: in another bedroom. Through the doorway across the room, I
- 25:05Speaker 6: could see myself. My face was whiter than my shirt,
- 25:11Speaker 6: and my body was quivering. I shifted, came closer, dying
- 25:17Speaker 6: a little wavering as I advanced two of me three four, five,
- 25:23Speaker 6: six seven. I was across the threshold now, and the
- 25:28Speaker 6: door brought around from its position flat against the outside wall,
- 25:31Speaker 6: pulled in after me, flashed the eighth image of myself
- 25:36Speaker 6: on its mirror back surface, called myself.
- 25:41Speaker 13: And Cliff, No, what's the matter of it, Cliff?
- 25:45Speaker 6: This is the place this is the place.
- 25:47Speaker 14: Yeah, now, wipe off your forehead.
- 25:49Speaker 7: You're ringing wet.
- 25:50Speaker 6: Have you got it?
- 25:52Speaker 13: I got it?
- 25:53Speaker 6: Try this one first.
- 25:56Speaker 7: That's a fake. The stairs a minute, don't come up, honey.
- 26:02Speaker 14: Vensu's taken his pants off to dry him around the sandwiches.
- 26:11Speaker 7: Look, it's a safe cut open.
- 26:14Speaker 6: That's what he was crouched before that night when he
- 26:16Speaker 6: seemed to be just like a puddle on the floor.
- 26:19Speaker 6: He must have had a blow torch down there on
- 26:21Speaker 6: the floor in front of him. That's what made the
- 26:22Speaker 6: bluish light and made her face stand out in the reflection.
- 26:26Speaker 9: I look too much.
- 26:30Speaker 6: And that door that you haven't.
- 26:32Speaker 11: Opened yet, it's the one I propped him up. And no,
- 26:36Speaker 11: don't not right away.
- 26:37Speaker 7: Just give me a minute longer, Just give me empty
- 26:45Speaker 7: with the blood on the back wall and the floor.
- 26:49Speaker 14: Dry cake, blood clears, all right, kidd, Let's hear about
- 26:57Speaker 14: another dream.
- 27:12Speaker 2: In Tonight's full Hour of Suspense. Eddie Bracken appears as
- 27:16Speaker 2: Vince in Nightmare by William Irish, Tonight's study in Suspense.
- 27:32Speaker 2: In just a moment, we will return with Act two
- 27:34Speaker 2: of Suspense.
- 27:35Speaker 21: This is CBS the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 27:48Speaker 2: And now back to our Hollywood soundstage and to our producer,
- 27:52Speaker 2: mister Robert Montgomery for Act two of Nightmare, starring Eddie
- 27:57Speaker 2: Bracken in a narrative, well calculate, lady, to keep you
- 28:00Speaker 2: in suspenn.
- 28:05Speaker 3: It had all.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Belonged to Vince until now, a wild dream heightened by
- 28:09Speaker 4: young imagination.
- 28:11Speaker 3: It was his alone, awful as.
- 28:13Speaker 4: It was, it all belonged to him, but he had
- 28:16Speaker 4: shared his nightmare with Cliff, and Cliff, as a detective,
- 28:19Speaker 4: he'd never once believed Vince. He told him he was
- 28:22Speaker 4: cock eye, that it couldn't be true. But there they are,
- 28:26Speaker 4: the two of them, in a deserted house with which
- 28:29Speaker 4: Vince seems quite familiar, although he swears he's never been there,
- 28:33Speaker 4: and they face each other in a room paneled with
- 28:36Speaker 4: eight mirrors, just like the room in Vince's nightmare.
- 28:50Speaker 6: I don't know what Cliff would have done up there
- 28:52Speaker 6: in the mirrored alcohol, but I blessed my sister when
- 28:55Speaker 6: she called us down for coffee. Cliff and I went
- 28:58Speaker 6: through the motions of eating with Lil and then waited
- 29:01Speaker 6: tensely until she dozed off in the living room. Tie
- 29:04Speaker 6: it out of the excitement of the storm. Then Cliff
- 29:08Speaker 6: pushed me back into the kitchen and shut the door.
- 29:11Speaker 6: He gave me a look that belonged in the police
- 29:13Speaker 6: station basement and lit a cigarette. He didn't offer me one.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Policemen don't with their suspects. He bounced the match down,
- 29:22Speaker 6: and he shoved his hands deep in his pockets.
- 29:24Speaker 7: Now make it short and make it quick and leave
- 29:26Speaker 7: throw it out of it.
- 29:27Speaker 6: You think I lied? Don't you?
- 29:28Speaker 14: You knew which cutoff to take it would get us
- 29:30Speaker 14: here from a dream, didn't you. You knew about the
- 29:33Speaker 14: stone lattings at the entrance from a dream, didn't you?
- 29:35Speaker 7: You knew whether the key to the front door was
- 29:37Speaker 7: catched from a dream.
- 29:38Speaker 14: You knew which was the front porch switch and which
- 29:40Speaker 14: was the hall from a dream. You know what I'd
- 29:43Speaker 14: do to you if you want Lil's brother, I'd push
- 29:45Speaker 14: your lion.
- 29:46Speaker 7: Face right through the back of your hand. Cliff.
- 29:48Speaker 14: You came to me for help, didn't you, But you
- 29:50Speaker 14: didn't have guts enough to come clean. I can respect
- 29:53Speaker 14: the guy no matter what he's done, if you'll loan
- 29:55Speaker 14: up to it, make a clean breast of it. I
- 29:57Speaker 14: can even understand and make allowances for a guy that'll
- 29:59Speaker 14: deny it.
- 30:00Speaker 7: They lie about it. That's only human nature.
- 30:02Speaker 14: But the guy that'll come to somebody trading on the
- 30:04Speaker 14: fact that he's married to his sister and he knows
- 30:05Speaker 14: he'll give him an ear, making a fool out of
- 30:07Speaker 14: him like you did me, I've got no use for him.
- 30:11Speaker 14: He's low and lousy and no good.
- 30:13Speaker 7: Look. I found this key in my pocket when I
- 30:15Speaker 7: got up this morning. How did it get there? Look?
- 30:18Speaker 7: I found this button. Some dream, wasn't it? All right?
- 30:23Speaker 14: All the dream's over and baby's awake now, and we're
- 30:26Speaker 14: gonna start in from scratch right here in this place,
- 30:28Speaker 14: you and me, and I'm gonna get the facts out
- 30:30Speaker 14: of you. Whether they go any further than me or not,
- 30:31Speaker 14: that's my business, But at least I'm gonna get him.
- 30:33Speaker 6: Don't hit me, Cliff, please?
- 30:35Speaker 7: Now? What were you doing at that place?
- 30:37Speaker 22: Huh?
- 30:38Speaker 7: What brought you here?
- 30:39Speaker 6: I was never here before. I never saw it until
- 30:41Speaker 6: I came here today with you in leve.
- 30:44Speaker 7: Who was the guy you did it too? What was
- 30:45Speaker 7: his name? I don't know, I tell you, I don't know.
- 30:49Speaker 7: Are you gonna answer me? Events you're gonna answer me?
- 30:51Speaker 6: I can't ask you me things I answered me when
- 30:54Speaker 6: I asked you a question.
- 30:56Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 30:57Speaker 14: I don't know.
- 30:59Speaker 7: You're not gonna get away with kid. I'd handled close
- 31:01Speaker 7: mouf guys before.
- 31:07Speaker 9: Don't use this gun much, but I know what to
- 31:09Speaker 9: do with it.
- 31:11Speaker 7: Who are you?
- 31:12Speaker 9: What you two doing in here?
- 31:15Speaker 7: We came in out of the rain. That suit you right?
- 31:19Speaker 9: Might not identify yourselves? Hurry up about it?
- 31:25Speaker 7: Looking say the wallet?
- 31:27Speaker 9: Where are you going for a drink of water?
- 31:30Speaker 3: Left?
- 31:30Speaker 23: Tap, right, one's hot water, Thanks twift, Dodge homicide squad.
- 31:37Speaker 23: Glad to know your dodge.
- 31:39Speaker 7: How about a little identifying yourself.
- 31:41Speaker 23: Well, I'm a deputy attached Sheriff's office, detailed to keep
- 31:45Speaker 23: eye on this place.
- 31:47Speaker 9: Seem a badge.
- 31:48Speaker 23: I was to home, having a little supper, and hey, why.
- 31:52Speaker 9: Don't you get in? Thought? I had it all locked up,
- 31:55Speaker 9: safe and sound.
- 31:56Speaker 7: The key was better than the flower box on the porch.
- 31:59Speaker 23: T was must be a spare then funny we never
- 32:02Speaker 23: knew there was a second one or solves.
- 32:04Speaker 7: Why should this house be your particular concern?
- 32:07Speaker 9: Was a murder uncovered in it? Last week?
- 32:09Speaker 7: There was? But I'd like to hear about it. All
- 32:13Speaker 7: about it?
- 32:16Speaker 6: We all sat down. I saw the deputy was enjoying
- 32:19Speaker 6: this talking shop with a big city detective. Cliff listened
- 32:23Speaker 6: while he kept an eye on me.
- 32:24Speaker 23: Well, this house belonged to a wealthy couple named a Fleming.
- 32:28Speaker 23: Husband was away on business in South America when it happened.
- 32:31Speaker 23: In fact, we ain't been able to reach him to
- 32:32Speaker 23: notify him yet. Wife was a pretty little thing, was
- 32:36Speaker 23: yet real purty flirty too, used to fool around with
- 32:40Speaker 23: the friend of her husband's named heirs, Dan Airs. Well,
- 32:43Speaker 23: that morning the milkman saw a bundle of rags by
- 32:46Speaker 23: the side of the road not far from here. Twas
- 32:48Speaker 23: little miss Fleming, all covered with dew and leaves and twigs.
- 32:52Speaker 9: Dead Dan.
- 32:54Speaker 23: She must have dragged herself along the ground for hours,
- 32:57Speaker 23: too weak to yell for help. Milkman took it the
- 32:59Speaker 23: hig hospital. Both legs broken, skull fracture, internal injuries.
- 33:04Speaker 9: Oh no, hey, kind of gets this young fella, don't it.
- 33:08Speaker 9: Stuff's new to him.
- 33:09Speaker 7: Guess what was it? Who did it to the woman.
- 33:11Speaker 23: Dan Air's car? We found it with blood and hairs
- 33:14Speaker 23: on the tires and fenders banding under some trees. The
- 33:18Speaker 23: same time, Waggoner, that's my chief. He found the safe
- 33:22Speaker 23: in this house busted and looted. It's in an eight
- 33:25Speaker 23: sided mirrored room that got on the floor above.
- 33:28Speaker 9: I'll take you up and show you afterwards.
- 33:29Speaker 7: Oh, cut it off.
- 33:31Speaker 9: That's why don't he go outside?
- 33:34Speaker 7: If this gets him, I want him in here with us.
- 33:36Speaker 7: He should get used to this.
- 33:37Speaker 23: Woun suit yourself well. Finding that safe, give us a case.
- 33:42Speaker 23: Airs new Fleming kept lots of dough in that safe.
- 33:45Speaker 23: Knew we went away on business trips. This last time
- 33:48Speaker 23: Airs come up here, went to work on the safe
- 33:50Speaker 23: and got caught by missus Fleming. She takes one look
- 33:52Speaker 23: and starts running for town.
- 33:53Speaker 7: To get help. Why didn't she use the telephone?
- 33:55Speaker 23: Because this warn't no simple robbery. She must have seen
- 33:58Speaker 23: by the look on his face said he'd kill her,
- 34:00Speaker 23: So she run for her life. He comes down, gets
- 34:03Speaker 23: into his car, catches up with her, and runs her down,
- 34:05Speaker 23: drives right over. He thinks she's dead and takes off.
- 34:09Speaker 7: Say he drove the car.
- 34:11Speaker 6: I don't know how to drive. I don't know how
- 34:14Speaker 6: to drive. Cliff knew it till his expression changed and
- 34:19Speaker 6: he pushed his pack of cigarettes over to me.
- 34:23Speaker 7: Have a smoke, kid, it'll do you good.
- 34:24Speaker 23: Thanks, Well, we sent out a general alarm for airs,
- 34:28Speaker 23: but at fire that afternoon, Missus Fleming regained consciousness for
- 34:32Speaker 23: a short time.
- 34:33Speaker 9: Waggon her. My chief was there and he heard her say,
- 34:36Speaker 9: is Dan all right? He didn't kill Dan, did he? Well?
- 34:40Speaker 23: That was enough to send us hot footing right back
- 34:42Speaker 23: to the house and we found Heir's dead body. No,
- 34:45Speaker 23: he'd been stabbed in the back with some kind of
- 34:48Speaker 23: a drill, dead since the night before. Missus Fleming died
- 34:51Speaker 23: about eight that evening. There went our case.
- 34:54Speaker 7: Did you get anything on the real killer?
- 34:56Speaker 9: Well, practically everything but the guy herself.
- 34:59Speaker 23: She was right in the al cove when it happened,
- 35:01Speaker 23: saw the killer by the torchlight, and lasted long enough
- 35:04Speaker 23: to give us a complete description. All of dope is
- 35:06Speaker 23: over at my chief's office.
- 35:08Speaker 14: Let's go over there, give it the once of it.
- 35:10Speaker 14: Come on, Vince, you too. I'll leave a note for
- 35:12Speaker 14: a little Come on, Vice. I know this is out
- 35:15Speaker 14: of your line, but you better come anyhow, Had you
- 35:34Speaker 14: come over, mister Dodge, you too, mister Hatty. I'm interested
- 35:37Speaker 14: in hearing the description of the killer.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Well, it's pretty complete. I ain't got it from Missus Fleming.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Here's a transcription my whole interview with her at the
- 35:45Speaker 2: hospital at a stenographer. Take it down to the bedside.
- 35:48Speaker 6: He was one of those efficient young sheriffs, and they
- 35:51Speaker 6: droned on and on. My clothes became drenched with perspiration,
- 35:55Speaker 6: and my stomach was quivering again.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Here's what you want. Dodge Killer was about twenty five
- 36:03Speaker 2: and skinny cheek bone stood out cash shadows in the
- 36:06Speaker 2: torch line is waving on his face.
- 36:09Speaker 7: Looking at me.
- 36:11Speaker 6: I covered my cheeks with my hands and stared down
- 36:13Speaker 6: at the floor. My face was burning under my fingers.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Had light brown hair. She even remembered that it was
- 36:20Speaker 2: parted low on the left side. Take a woman to
- 36:23Speaker 2: notice thing like that, even at such a moment. And
- 36:27Speaker 2: an unusually long forelock that kept falling in front of
- 36:30Speaker 2: his face.
- 36:31Speaker 6: My hand went up a little higher and brushed mine back.
- 36:33Speaker 6: It only fell down again, like.
- 36:35Speaker 13: It always did.
- 36:36Speaker 2: His eyes were fixed and glassy, as though he was
- 36:39Speaker 2: mentally unbalanced. He had on a knitted sweater, was darned
- 36:43Speaker 2: up in the neckline, and a different colored yarn.
- 36:45Speaker 6: Little maid and I burned it with a cigarette. She
- 36:49Speaker 6: fixed it up the best way she could, and Cliff
- 36:51Speaker 6: knew about it.
- 36:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Look, it's hours to get but that's it.
- 36:56Speaker 7: You got pictures of missus Fleming and Air's death.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Photographs.
- 37:00Speaker 7: Yeah, let's have a look.
- 37:03Speaker 6: I got weaker and dizzy as they handed the pictures around.
- 37:07Speaker 6: I didn't look at them, but I saw a cliff
- 37:10Speaker 6: distract the other men's attention long enough to slip them
- 37:12Speaker 6: on top of the filecase. The next thing I knew,
- 37:15Speaker 6: we were getting ready to put the lights out and
- 37:17Speaker 6: leave coming.
- 37:18Speaker 7: Vince.
- 37:19Speaker 9: Hey, yeah, how you folks back to the house. It's
- 37:25Speaker 9: on my way home.
- 37:26Speaker 7: Oh, Sheriff, thank you very much.
- 37:28Speaker 14: Oh say Evince, We'll run back a minute and see
- 37:31Speaker 14: if I left my cigarettes in mister Wagner's office.
- 37:33Speaker 7: Huh sure, Jariff, I want you and the deputy and
- 37:36Speaker 7: look me up.
- 37:41Speaker 6: His voice dwindled behind me, and I was in the
- 37:45Speaker 6: darkened office again alone. I knew what I had been
- 37:48Speaker 6: sent back for. He wanted me to see those pictures.
- 37:51Speaker 6: I switched on the lights. They run the filecase. I
- 37:55Speaker 6: took them in my hands and I stared at.
- 37:59Speaker 22: Them well out like a lad.
- 38:11Speaker 9: Now, what didn't you spoil the pictures?
- 38:14Speaker 14: He's not well. He's under treatment by a doctor right now.
- 38:16Speaker 14: He gets these Disney spills now and then that's all
- 38:18Speaker 14: it is. Hell, yeah, I can't drink this water.
- 38:22Speaker 7: Yes, sure, don't say anything.
- 38:24Speaker 14: You'll be all right. I'm sorry for all the trouble
- 38:27Speaker 14: we've cast.
- 38:27Speaker 9: Perfectly, all right, come back anytime.
- 38:36Speaker 6: That was the place I never wanted to go back
- 38:38Speaker 6: to Cliff, and I didn't say much. As the deputy
- 38:41Speaker 6: droves to the house. We picked up Little and started
- 38:44Speaker 6: back to town.
- 38:46Speaker 17: I think you've got a nerve.
- 38:48Speaker 6: We couldn't talk them either, because Little was blazing. Saw
- 38:52Speaker 6: at Cliff leaving her alone, placed into him, and I
- 38:56Speaker 6: think for once he was grateful kept him from thinking
- 38:59Speaker 6: too steadily about me. She only quit when we were
- 39:03Speaker 6: near my place and she saw me holding my head.
- 39:06Speaker 17: What's the matter? Vance, don't you feel well?
- 39:08Speaker 7: The outing was a little bit too strenuous for it.
- 39:11Speaker 17: I wondered, the way you drive?
- 39:12Speaker 7: Yeah, well I got us here, didn't I great.
- 39:15Speaker 17: I don't see what I can do about having you
- 39:17Speaker 17: decorated for it.
- 39:19Speaker 7: I'll go up with Vince a minute.
- 39:21Speaker 6: No, it's all right, I'm feeling I'm coming up with
- 39:23Speaker 6: the events. He closed the door to my room behind us,
- 39:32Speaker 6: and then turned to me. He spoke low, and very ungrammatically.
- 39:36Speaker 13: No fireworks.
- 39:38Speaker 14: Lil's wading downstairs. I'm going to take her home first
- 39:40Speaker 14: before I do anything.
- 39:43Speaker 7: I love Lil.
- 39:45Speaker 14: It's bad enough what this is going to do it
- 39:47Speaker 14: When she finds out, I'll goat to see she gets
- 39:49Speaker 14: at least one good night's sleep before she does.
- 39:52Speaker 7: Cliff, Claif run out, that's the best thing it can do.
- 39:56Speaker 14: Meet you finish on the hoof somewhere else where your
- 39:58Speaker 14: sister and I don't have to see it happen. And
- 40:00Speaker 14: if you're still here when I come back, I'm going
- 40:02Speaker 14: to arrest you for the murder of Dan Ays and
- 40:04Speaker 14: Dorothy Fleming. I don't have to ask you if you
- 40:07Speaker 14: kill those two people. You fainted dead on the floor
- 40:10Speaker 14: when you saw other pictures. I'll take my advice and
- 40:13Speaker 14: don't be here when I get back. I'll turn in
- 40:18Speaker 14: my information at my own precinct hous and they can
- 40:20Speaker 14: pass it under Wagner.
- 40:22Speaker 7: Then I'll hand over my own badge in the morning.
- 40:26Speaker 6: Cliff, I'm frightened.
- 40:30Speaker 7: Killers always are. Afterwards, don't forget you got a half hour.
- 40:45Speaker 6: I didn't move for about half the time he'd given me.
- 40:48Speaker 6: Then my hand went to my cheeks at had in
- 40:51Speaker 6: the Sheriff's office, and my face felt briskly. Without thinking,
- 40:56Speaker 6: I went into the bathroom and turned on the warm
- 40:59Speaker 6: water tap. I took my cream and blade holder from
- 41:04Speaker 6: the cabinet, not a sheer reflexive habit, and I realized
- 41:09Speaker 6: I didn't need the cream and the holder, and I
- 41:11Speaker 6: put them back.
- 41:14Speaker 13: I took the racer in my hand.
- 41:28Speaker 6: I was seeing black spots in front of my eyes
- 41:30Speaker 6: when he tried to get in the door. I tried
- 41:34Speaker 6: to keep very quiet, so I think I'd land and
- 41:37Speaker 6: go away.
- 41:40Speaker 13: Why didn't he go away? I could barely stand up.
- 41:44Speaker 7: Open the door that rushed the lot away.
- 41:47Speaker 6: I held my breath for a second, and then I
- 41:52Speaker 6: had no strength left.
- 42:01Speaker 13: Vince, you could have saved yourself trip back.
- 42:17Speaker 6: They didn't keep me at the hospital, just took stitches
- 42:20Speaker 6: in my wrist and told me to go home and
- 42:22Speaker 6: take it easy for a while. I hadn't been able
- 42:25Speaker 6: to do even that right. It was four in the
- 42:29Speaker 6: morning when we got back to my room. The cliff
- 42:32Speaker 6: stood over me while I undressed and got into bed.
- 42:35Speaker 7: I remember, just take it easy.
- 42:38Speaker 13: What about the arrest postponed?
- 42:41Speaker 7: Canceled?
- 42:43Speaker 14: I gave you your chance to run out, and he
- 42:45Speaker 14: didn't take it. As a matter of fact, I sent
- 42:46Speaker 14: a little home alone. I've been downstairs watching the street
- 42:49Speaker 14: door the whole time. When a guy is willing to
- 42:53Speaker 14: let the life run out of his veins, there must
- 42:55Speaker 14: be something to his story.
- 42:57Speaker 7: They don't die to back up lies.
- 43:00Speaker 14: I think you've been telling the truth to the best
- 43:02Speaker 14: of your knowledge.
- 43:05Speaker 13: Locked, I don't even want to talk about it anymore.
- 43:10Speaker 14: Well, I think I better stick with you tonight.
- 43:13Speaker 6: Anyway, it's all right, I won't cry it again.
- 43:24Speaker 7: M there's blood on the floor. You sure have picked
- 43:31Speaker 7: a messy way.
- 43:33Speaker 13: I did think of gas that hotel doesn't have.
- 43:37Speaker 14: If more houses had no gas, there'd be fewer.
- 43:42Speaker 6: Sure, all the modern conveniences, But electricity is undependable too.
- 43:47Speaker 13: Lights go out.
- 43:48Speaker 6: Happened to a fella in the next room one night.
- 43:51Speaker 7: Had he had to use a candle.
- 43:54Speaker 6: It was the same night that I had the dream.
- 43:59Speaker 7: How did you know it had to use the candle?
- 44:00Speaker 7: Were you in there at the time.
- 44:02Speaker 24: No.
- 44:02Speaker 6: He wrapped and stuck his head in my door for
- 44:05Speaker 6: a minute. Wanted to know if the power had failed
- 44:08Speaker 6: all over. You know how people are in little hotels
- 44:10Speaker 6: like this.
- 44:11Speaker 7: Why do you have to do that? Couldn't he tell
- 44:12Speaker 7: me the whole.
- 44:13Speaker 6: All lights go out at eleven thirty cause it was
- 44:16Speaker 6: after that.
- 44:17Speaker 7: Oh, that's still no reason why I should bust any on.
- 44:19Speaker 6: You.
- 44:20Speaker 7: Look, I'd like to hear the rest of this.
- 44:21Speaker 6: The rest I told you all the wrist to that's
- 44:24Speaker 6: what you think.
- 44:25Speaker 14: Just watch what I can get out of it.
- 44:32Speaker 6: He wouldn't let me go to sleep. I had to
- 44:34Speaker 6: tell him about the man next door who moved in
- 44:36Speaker 6: a week or so before the night of the dream.
- 44:39Speaker 6: That particular night, I had been reading in bed, and
- 44:42Speaker 6: as I put down the lights and about ready to
- 44:44Speaker 6: doze off, he knocked.
- 44:47Speaker 7: Come in.
- 44:50Speaker 6: He was holding the candle right in front of his
- 44:52Speaker 6: face between his eyes, and in the darkness I had
- 44:55Speaker 6: to stare at the candle light and his eyes behind it.
- 44:58Speaker 6: He explained about the lights, and.
- 45:00Speaker 8: Please excuse me for intruding. You must be tired, very tired.
- 45:08Speaker 8: You look so sleepy. No, you want to sleep. I
- 45:16Speaker 8: shouldn't have come. You can sleep now, sleep well. Ries
- 45:26Speaker 8: is so heavy, you look so tired.
- 45:35Speaker 6: And that's all there was to it. He left and
- 45:38Speaker 6: I went to sleep.
- 45:39Speaker 7: Did you hear him shut the door?
- 45:40Speaker 6: Well, I suppose.
- 45:41Speaker 14: I don't mean suppose, I mean did you actually hear
- 45:43Speaker 14: the door shut?
- 45:44Speaker 7: Think about it, Kain, this is important.
- 45:46Speaker 3: I don't remember.
- 45:47Speaker 14: Well another thing, then, did you ever have any conversation
- 45:49Speaker 14: with him other than hello and goodbye?
- 45:52Speaker 6: Well, you offered me some cough crap several times, and
- 45:54Speaker 6: I told him I didn't like him. But once going
- 45:56Speaker 6: down in the elevator, he absolutely insisted that I take.
- 45:59Speaker 13: One, so I did.
- 46:01Speaker 14: Testing willpower. Well, never mind, I don't want to frighten
- 46:05Speaker 14: you right now. Look, you get some sleep, kidd here
- 46:07Speaker 14: a week after what you try to do tonight?
- 46:08Speaker 6: Where are you going?
- 46:09Speaker 13: I thought you were staying here.
- 46:10Speaker 14: I'm going back to the Fleming House and do Wagoner's
- 46:12Speaker 14: headquarters too while I'm at it.
- 46:14Speaker 11: Now you're going all the way back up there at
- 46:18Speaker 11: this hour of the morning.
- 46:19Speaker 7: And events don't give up yet.
- 46:22Speaker 14: We will find a way out without shortcuts like you
- 46:25Speaker 14: tried tonight.
- 46:36Speaker 6: I didn't wake until noon, but I didn't dare I
- 46:39Speaker 6: leave the room for a cup of coffee. I didn't
- 46:42Speaker 6: want to miss Cliff. When I got back about two,
- 46:45Speaker 6: there was a knock on the door and I almost
- 46:46Speaker 6: fell over, and my roost to open it, Cliff, I, oh, excuse.
- 46:52Speaker 10: Me, sure, mister, say, are you Vincent HARDI? Yes, Well
- 46:56Speaker 10: I think I got what you want?
- 46:59Speaker 13: What I want?
- 47:00Speaker 17: Yeah, my uncle Henry built it. He was crazy. It's
- 47:03Speaker 17: got a room with eight sides.
- 47:06Speaker 6: I'm terribly sorry, but I'm not in the market for
- 47:08Speaker 6: that house any longer.
- 47:09Speaker 17: You Wane. No, Oh, you're like Uncle Henry too.
- 47:13Speaker 24: Huh.
- 47:14Speaker 17: He would have liked you.
- 47:16Speaker 10: Well, goodbye.
- 47:26Speaker 6: Cliff finally showed up around three. He looked terrible. He
- 47:30Speaker 6: hadn't slept all night. He showed me a picture he'd brought.
- 47:34Speaker 7: You know this guy, Evince.
- 47:35Speaker 6: This guy, well, the glasses are missing and the mustache
- 47:41Speaker 6: and the hair is in rumple. But Cliff, uh, yeah,
- 47:45Speaker 6: this is the guy from next door.
- 47:48Speaker 13: Where'd you get this picture from?
- 47:49Speaker 7: Wagner? It's missus Flemings husband.
- 47:52Speaker 13: They're both the same fellow.
- 47:53Speaker 14: Right, But there's no out in it for you. I
- 47:57Speaker 14: got that straight, kit. I checked the fingerprins. Wagner got there, yours,
- 48:01Speaker 14: you and nobody. But you went into the Fleming house,
- 48:03Speaker 14: killed Airs and hid his body in the closet. No,
- 48:05Speaker 14: but you didn't kill Dorothy Fleming because you can't drive
- 48:09Speaker 14: somebody else did that near's car? Somebody who brought you
- 48:11Speaker 14: up there and was waiting for you at a safe distance.
- 48:13Speaker 6: But why didn't I know I was doing?
- 48:15Speaker 7: Well, that'll come later.
- 48:16Speaker 14: What we have to do now is prove that the
- 48:18Speaker 14: circumstance of the drink could have happened, get it done
- 48:20Speaker 14: on record officially. That isn't perfect, but it's the best
- 48:24Speaker 14: we can do. Well, what do you I think it's
- 48:28Speaker 14: better if you don't know too much. Uh. A telegram
- 48:32Speaker 14: addressed to missus Fleming was received from her husband while
- 48:35Speaker 14: I was up there. He's arriving back from South America today.
- 48:40Speaker 7: Where are we going?
- 48:43Speaker 14: Where is the place you'd at least rather go? Of
- 48:45Speaker 14: all places right now, that that room, that house. I'm sorry, kid,
- 48:51Speaker 14: but that's the place you're going to have to go
- 48:53Speaker 14: back to and stay in alone tonight. If you ever
- 48:56Speaker 14: want to get out from under the shutters again, shall
- 49:00Speaker 14: we make the try?
- 49:03Speaker 6: Okay, I'm ready. I'd been sitting on the floor outside
- 49:16Speaker 6: the mirrored alcove to rest when I heard him come in.
- 49:22Speaker 6: He didn't come right up. I suppose he stopped to
- 49:25Speaker 6: put his things away. Then I heard him tap the
- 49:28Speaker 6: keys of the piano downstairs. Then I heard his footsteps coming,
- 49:39Speaker 6: and I pushed myself backwards along the floor into the alcove.
- 49:45Speaker 6: My heart was pounding so hot I had to keep
- 49:48Speaker 6: my mouth open. He was in the bedroom, opening suitcases,
- 49:54Speaker 6: looking for things. I pushed myself into the closet where
- 49:58Speaker 6: the body had been, and in a moment, he walked
- 50:02Speaker 6: into the alcove and put on the lights. I could
- 50:06Speaker 6: see him through the keyhole as he walked past the door.
- 50:09Speaker 6: Then he stood still, turning to go.
- 50:14Speaker 13: This was the time now.
- 50:17Speaker 6: I held the gun tight and pushed the door open soundlessly.
- 50:22Speaker 6: He heard me as I stepped into the room and
- 50:24Speaker 6: whirled around. I wanted to yell at the top of
- 50:28Speaker 6: my lungs at him. I kept my lips together. Cliff
- 50:33Speaker 6: had drilled me carefully on how I should act, what
- 50:35Speaker 6: I should say. He'd particularly warned me to make fleming talk.
- 50:40Speaker 13: First, How did you get here?
- 50:46Speaker 6: You showed me the way, didn't you?
- 50:48Speaker 9: You remembered coming here?
- 50:52Speaker 6: Didn't think I would, did you?
- 50:54Speaker 7: You couldn't have?
- 50:57Speaker 6: And how did I come back again? You explain it?
- 51:01Speaker 8: How long have you been in here like like this?
- 51:05Speaker 6: Since I have to doc I got in before you
- 51:07Speaker 6: came home.
- 51:08Speaker 8: What'd you bring with you?
- 51:09Speaker 6: Nobody? Just this, a forty four automatic. That's all the
- 51:12Speaker 6: company I wanted with you?
- 51:15Speaker 7: Exactly? How much do you remember?
- 51:17Speaker 6: Much more than you think you remember?
- 51:19Speaker 7: The drive up?
- 51:21Speaker 8: You couldn't have. I told you to remember it, only
- 51:24Speaker 8: the dream. You had to look?
- 51:27Speaker 7: What look?
- 51:29Speaker 6: I was holding a thumbtack pressed into the palm of
- 51:32Speaker 6: each hand the whole way.
- 51:34Speaker 8: And why did you do everything that you were direct
- 51:37Speaker 8: you to do so passively?
- 51:39Speaker 6: I thought there might be something in it formulated if
- 51:41Speaker 6: anyone went to all that trouble purposely faked.
- 51:45Speaker 8: I can't believe it. You didn't even draw back, show
- 51:48Speaker 8: a sign. I'll let you out of the car, put
- 51:50Speaker 8: the knife in your hand, sent you on towards the house,
- 51:53Speaker 8: told you how to get in. What to do you mean?
- 51:56Speaker 8: You went ahead unconsciously?
- 51:58Speaker 7: Sure?
- 51:58Speaker 6: I figured you'd pay me you off afterwards?
- 52:01Speaker 8: Oh well, what went wrong?
- 52:05Speaker 7: Inside? Well?
- 52:06Speaker 6: I accidentally dropped the knife you gave me. Airs jumped
- 52:10Speaker 6: me in the alcove in the darkness. Your wife put
- 52:13Speaker 6: a drill into my hand instead of his, and I
- 52:16Speaker 6: killed him in self.
- 52:17Speaker 13: Defense, and you ran out.
- 52:20Speaker 8: I had to go after unstopp her myself. I got
- 52:24Speaker 8: it with Air's car. If you never even saw.
- 52:27Speaker 6: Me, that's what I wanted to know.
- 52:30Speaker 7: Are you crazy? You must have known?
- 52:32Speaker 6: No, I tricked you. You had me hypnotized that night, all right,
- 52:35Speaker 6: but you've just convicted yourself out of your own mouth
- 52:38Speaker 6: to me. I don't want to be paid off. You
- 52:41Speaker 6: picked someone with a weak willpower maybe, but strong scruples.
- 52:46Speaker 6: I was an honest man. You made me commit murder.
- 52:48Speaker 6: I can't clear myself in the eyes of the law ever,
- 52:51Speaker 6: but you're gonna pay for doing that to me now
- 52:54Speaker 6: this way.
- 52:54Speaker 8: Wait, don't do that. That won't help you winning.
- 52:59Speaker 6: You shouldn't have le me alone. That was your mistake.
- 53:02Speaker 6: Here you go, fleming.
- 53:03Speaker 8: Wait, wait one minute more, just a minute a look,
- 53:10Speaker 8: look at me, Look at my eyes.
- 53:16Speaker 6: Clipp had warned me to be careful, but I wasn't
- 53:18Speaker 6: careful enough. I couldn't seem to help myself. I just
- 53:22Speaker 6: glanced at him. Our eyes met, and suddenly mine couldn't
- 53:26Speaker 6: get away anymore, as though they were hit by glue.
- 53:29Speaker 6: A sort of taper turned me into wax. But I
- 53:33Speaker 6: made an effort to do one more thing. It came
- 53:35Speaker 6: out as a single sentence. I mean, I'm I'm.
- 53:47Speaker 8: Going to shoot you though, Hi, you don't want to
- 53:53Speaker 8: shoot anybody. You're tired. A gun's too heavy for you.
- 53:59Speaker 8: Why do you want to hold that heavything? That's right,
- 54:07Speaker 8: you're tire, tire?
- 54:24Speaker 2: Why this will stand up in any card. There's enough
- 54:27Speaker 2: evidence on this wire recorded a send Fleming to the
- 54:29Speaker 2: electric chair.
- 54:29Speaker 7: Listen, listen, it's all that mumbling. I can't quite my god?
- 54:33Speaker 7: What this? Hey, we'd better get up there.
- 54:36Speaker 2: Come on, hey, Fling must be trying to do Holy smokes,
- 54:38Speaker 2: he's getting away.
- 54:39Speaker 7: Come on.
- 54:52Speaker 8: There's a pencil and paper in the glove compartment. Take
- 54:57Speaker 8: them out.
- 54:59Speaker 7: Word now, write what I tell you.
- 55:03Speaker 24: Start.
- 55:05Speaker 8: I'm wanted with a murder of those two people at
- 55:14Speaker 8: the Fleming house. They're bound to get me sooner or later,
- 55:21Speaker 8: and I have no chance. I see no other way.
- 55:29Speaker 7: But this.
- 55:32Speaker 24: Nah signed your name Vincent Hardy.
- 55:49Speaker 8: Now get out of the car quickly and take the
