- 0:21her chicken coop, along with all her chickens.
- 0:27Hey everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:29coop. So today we are talking about
- 0:32the story that we're telling ourselves right now at the end
- 0:35of the year. And this is this is something
- 0:38that you have to take a peek at. You have to look at it.
- 0:41You have to know because if you're telling yourself you
- 0:43didn't finish the year strong or you're not finishing where you
- 0:46want to be and you're going into the end of the year in a state
- 0:50of despair, you have to stop and tell yourself, OK, is this
- 0:53really true? Which I doubt it's true.
- 0:55I'm quite sure you, just like everybody else that I coach that
- 0:59has this conversation with themselves, I have to constantly
- 1:02come back and say, well, this is really true.
- 1:04I mean, I, I know it's not true because I've seen all the things
- 1:08you've done, but they just haven't remembered them and they
- 1:10keep beating up on themselves for the stuff that they did not
- 1:14complete. And this is where it gets so
- 1:17tricky because it's easy to sit there and talk about what you
- 1:20did not complete. It's easy to complain about
- 1:23things in life. It's easy to complain about
- 1:25what's wrong. It's much harder, my friends, to
- 1:30collect yourself and to say, OK, let me look at what actually is
- 1:35great. Let me look at what is actually
- 1:37the good stuff that I did. It takes a lot more effort to
- 1:40sit there, especially if you didn't keep track of it all year
- 1:43long, which is one of the reasons why I constantly track
- 1:47things like this for myself, because it's way easier for me
- 1:49to make it all about what I didn't get done than what I did
- 1:52get done. And I can keep track and beat
- 1:55myself up of the stuff right in my head.
- 1:58I know where I failed all along the way.
- 2:01Much harder for me to remember all the little things that I
- 2:03accomplished. I was sitting here not long ago,
- 2:07probably maybe two weeks ago. So not that far out.
- 2:10That's the funny part. Not that far out from when I
- 2:13published the the last book, The Emotional Dilemma of Leadership,
- 2:16and spent the summer doing it right.
- 2:19Spent a good chunk of my time writing this book.
- 2:22So when I was listing out things that still needed to get done
- 2:26and I was kind of like saying to myself, I have so much left to
- 2:30do that I really wanted to get done.
- 2:33I started to feel the panic. The creep started to come in and
- 2:37tell me all the things that I slipped on.
- 2:40And I was like, hey, hang on a second, I published a book.
- 2:44Now I need to cut myself some slack here.
- 2:46I published a book. What am I thinking?
- 2:48Why am I choosing to beat up on myself like that?
- 2:51And as soon as I grabbed that piece of information forward, I
- 2:54was like, oh, OK, I get what's happening.
- 2:57I need to stop myself. But it's always one of those
- 3:00challenges where you have to stop and pause and say yourself,
- 3:03OK, I got to check in with this. Because if I don't check in with
- 3:07it, I promise you it will be one of those hard things to get
- 3:11past. It will just keep gnawing at you
- 3:13and it will keep bugging you and it will keep telling you all the
- 3:17little things that you need to remind yourself of.
- 3:21I'm air quoting that remind. Pick it yourself.
- 3:23Since we're in the chicken coop, we'll say it's just going to be
- 3:25a bunch of pecking. Peck, Peck, Peck, Peck, Peck it
- 3:27yourself so that you know what you failed at.
- 3:31And it's it's, it's useless. It's useless energy.
- 3:34Again, it's that whole metaphor of being in a rocking chair and
- 3:37rocking like crazy and getting absolutely nowhere.
- 3:40You just sit there and you use all your energy to rock back and
- 3:42forth, but you get nowhere. So how do we stop this?
- 3:46The very first thing that we have to do is to sit down and
- 3:49make a grand list of the small accomplishments, the medium
- 3:52accomplishments, the large accomplishments, just in
- 3:54general, all the accomplishments and really look at them and take
- 3:58in the fact that we're proud of those.
- 4:00Each one of them. As you're writing it, stop and
- 4:02say, OK, I'm really proud of that.
- 4:04Like I can sit there and I can say I'm really proud of that
- 4:06book. I know it's helped a lot of
- 4:08people already because I keep getting messages about it.
- 4:11I know it worked. So it, it, it I can be proud out
- 4:15of it. Now, I could sit there and
- 4:17nitpick and say, OK, I do not have enough reviews on this book
- 4:21yet. But it takes forever to get
- 4:23people to go on Amazon and give you a review.
- 4:25And it takes asking and saying, hey, if you don't mind, would
- 4:28you go over and give it a review?
- 4:29Because most people are so busy, they don't do it.
- 4:32That's just, it's just part of the dynamic of being an author
- 4:36and looking for those reviews. And quite honestly, I don't pay
- 4:39for them. I wait till I have real ones.
- 4:42What a concept. I don't pay for them.
- 4:45So it it's just a a matter of the process.
- 4:49I can't beat myself up for it. What I can say is OK, that's
- 4:53something that we want to do. We're going to put it on the
- 4:55list and we're going to make sure we reach out to everybody
- 4:58that we know purchased and we can say let's get this underway.
- 5:01Please help us out with this, but we don't have to beat up
- 5:04ourselves over it. So you see where I'm going with
- 5:08this. I can still celebrate the book.
- 5:10I can make part of what I need to do with it on the list for
- 5:13next year, but I am not going to make myself feel bad about it.
- 5:17So dig in and figure out what you can really celebrate.
- 5:23You want to finish this year celebrating.
- 5:25You don't want to finish this year being in this place where I
- 5:29missed my goals. I had other things come up
- 5:31because that's life. We all have life things that
- 5:34come up. We all have problems that come
- 5:36up and we just have to deal with it.
- 5:37We just have to recognize it and deal with it and say, yeah, it's
- 5:40OK, It's OK. Whatever I was able to
- 5:41accomplish, that's the best part of it.
- 5:44And if it and if I just accomplished staying alive, then
- 5:47that's good. So I hope you guys have a
- 5:50blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 5:53Bye.
